Rory McIlroy earned his 23rd PGA Tour victory, reclaimed world No. 1 and pocketed nearly $2 million in winning the CJ Cup in South Carolina.

McIlroy crossed the $68 million mark in official career PGA Tour earnings, getting him closer to No. 2 on the all-time list. McIlroy is currently fourth, with Vijay Singh ($71,236,216) third and Jim Furyk ($71,507,269) second.

Tiger Woods is No. 1 with $120,895,206.

Rory McIlroy came up short in his efforts to secure a 24th PGA Tour win at the Travelers Championship and eventually had to settle for a tie for seventh.

However, that performance at TPC River Highlands was enough to see the 34-year-old reach a new career milestone. McIlroy earned $650,000 in Connecticut, which saw him pass $75m in career earnings on the PGA Tour to stand at $75,819,307.

That has moved McIlroy past Dustin Johnson to third on the all-time list, albeit still over $20m behind Phil Mickelson , who stands at $96,572,310. Unsurprisingly, far beyond either McIlroy or Mickelson is 15-time Major winner Tiger Woods, who won’t be caught any time soon despite the certainty of a limited PGA Tour schedule in the future. Woods, who has 82 wins on the Tour, stands at $120, 895,206.

While McIlroy’s earnings are a reflection of his consistency since joining the PGA Tour in 2010, he is far from the highest earner in 2023 so far.

After months of fine form, Jon Rahm broke the money record for a PGA Tour season after his runner-up finish in April’s Mexico Open. That moved his earnings to $14,462,840, and he is currently on $15,210, 983, with only the most consistent player in the game at present, World No.1 Scottie Scheffler , ahead of him, on $18,548, 392. In contrast, McIlroy is currently fifth on the list on $9,644,758.

Nevertheless, given the longevity of his career so far, it is not surprising that McIlroy remains on significantly more career earnings than the two, with Rahm in 11th on the career money list at $50,335, 026 and Scheffler in 23rd on $40,099,279.

There are also signs that McIlroy’s earnings may accelerate in the weeks to come. His performance at the Travelers Championship was his fifth top 10 finish in a row and, while most of the designated events, which have elevated purses, have now been played, there are still big-money tournaments in the pipeline, including July’s Open Championship and the season-ending FedEx Playoffs.

Rory McIlroy’s interview after winning THE CJ CUP

For the second time in his career, Rory McIlroy defended a title on the PGA TOUR.

McIlroy recorded a one-stroke victory at THE CJ CUP at South Carolina held at Congaree Golf Club. He earned $1.89 million and 500 FedExCup points.

Coincidentally, both of McIlroy’s successful title defenses occurred on different courses. Last year’s edition of THE CJ CUP was held at The Summit Club in Las Vegas. His other back-to-back titles spanned three years at the RBC Canadian Open because the pandemic canceled the 2020 and 2021 contests. After capturing victory at Hamilton Golf & Country Club in 2019, he prevailed at St. George’s G&CC in June of this year.

Sunday’s win is the 23rd of McIlroy’s career on the PGA TOUR. He has at least one in 12 of the 14 seasons in which he’s been a member and in each of the last six. His last victory was in his last start at the TOUR Championship, so although it bridges seasons, this also is the fourth time that he’s won in consecutive starts on TOUR and first since he won three in a row in 2014.

Although the likes of Jon Rahm (+900), Scottie Scheffler (+1200), Justin Thomas (+1600) and Matt Fitzpatrick (+2200) were in the field at Congaree Golf Club last week, McIlroy opened the tournament as the favorite at BetMGM. He was +700. His personal bonus is that he’ll return to the top spot in the Official World Golf Ranking for the ninth time in his career and first time since the second week of July in 2020.

McIlroy closed bogey-bogey, but as he was circling four birdies over a five-hole stretch through the par-4 16th hole, it was increasingly apparent that the race would be for second place. Ultimately, it was snared by Kurt Kitayama, who, like McIlroy, also signed for 1-under 67.

Kitayama’s consolations were $1.134 million and 300 FedExCup points. It’s his third runner-up finish in 27 starts as a TOUR member and third in his last 14. He had opened the week at +10000 as an outright at BetMGM.

Rory McIlroy has earned a payday of $15m (£12m) after topping the PGA Tour ’s Player Impact Program (PIP) rankings.

First introduced in 2020/21, the PIP is designed to reward players who generate interest and revenue for the Tour.

The goal is to quantify the impact that each of the sport’s top players have on positively impacting the promotion of golf.

A $100m (£80m) pot is shared between 20 golfers, with McIlroy topping the list ahead of Tiger Woods and Jon Rahm .

Though his major drought extended for another year , the Northern Irishman won twice during the Tour season and remains a prominent speaker for and face of golf.

McIlroy had been an outspoken critic of the LIV Golf series before news of a shock partnership between the Saudi-backed breakaway tournaments and the Tour earlier this year.

His place at the top of the list comes shortly after he announced a decision to step away from the PGA Tour’s policy board — he will be replaced by Jordan Spieth.

Woods’s place in second on the list is evidence of the 15-time major champion’s continuing influence over a sport he dominated for so long.

The 47-year-old played only twice in 2022/23, finishing tied for 45th at the Genesis Invitational before withdrawing midway through the Masters due to injury.

Rory McIlroy can achieve this rare PGA Tour money milestone with a win at Memorial

There are several reasons why Rory McIlroy has incentive to win on Sunday at the Memorial Tournament, the Northern Irishman coming into the final round sharing the lead at six under along with David Lipsky and Si Woo Kim . For starters, a win would be the 24th of his PGA Tour career, tying him with Gary Player and Dustin Johnson on the all-time victory list in 26th place. It would also be his first in Jack Nicklaus’ event at Muirfield Village in Ohio, McIlroy having developed a personal relationship with the Golden Bear. And with the U.S. Open coming, momentum heading into a major wouldn’t be a bad thing.

Yet there’s another motivation for the 34-year-old Northern Irishman to claim the $3.6 million first-place prize money payout in this latest PGA Tour designated event: It would lift him past the $75 million in career PGA Tour earnings, making him just the third player to earn that much.

McIlroy started 2023 with $68,064,549 (221 starts, 23 wins) but has crept up to $72,114,057, passing Vijay Singh and Jim Furyk in all-time earnings. By winning on Sunday, McIlroy would jump to $75,714,057, which would allow him to jump Johnson ($74,982,819) to the No. 3 spot.

The two golfers still ahead of McIlroy on the all-time list are obviously and still a little far away for McIlroy to catch in the short term. No. 2 is Phil Mickelson at $96,572,310. (Maybe we should expect Lefty to issue another random dagger tweet to McIlroy like the one he delivered on Friday when he said no LIV team would take him because of his “bs”.)

McIlroy's potential retort to Lefty would be that that he was able to hit $75 million in 230 starts while Mickelson did it in his 503rd, at the 2014 PGA Championship, where he finished second ironically to McIlroy at Valhalla.

And No. 1, of course, is Tiger Woods, who is currently at $120,954,766. Woods passed $75M with his win at the 2007 BMW Championship, which was his 229th career tour start and his 60th career win. If McIrloy were to win on Sunday, he would still be $45 million behind Tiger in all-time earnings. Just how much is that in context? Well, McIlroy would have to win 12½ more designated events at the $3.6 million first-place payday to catch him.

The loneliness of the arena.

As Rory McIlroy walked up the 18th fairway at Royal County Down on Sunday afternoon, thousands lined the hole, Irish lads and lasses, shouting encouragement, filling in the fairway behind him, hoping to lift him to a miracle finish. McIlroy had just suffered tremendous misfortune when his chief competition, Rasmus Højgaard , had holed a bunker shot at No. 17 for an incredibly unlikely birdie. McIlroy then brought further pain on himself, three-putting from 25 feet at No. 17 just minutes later. His two-shot lead from an hour before was suddenly gone, now transformed to a two-shot deficit with one hole to play. The round wasn’t yet over but already you could feel echoes of McIlroy’s high-profile near-misses gone by. His three-putt at 17 echoed his three-putt at No. 16 at the U.S. Open earlier this summer. The throngs of Northern Irish fans urging him along echoed the cries of those who’d tried to carry him in vain to a missed cut at Royal Portrush a half-decade ago.

McIlroy’s only remaining hope was to eagle the par-5 18th to force a playoff, and so he pummeled the longest drive of the day, some 345 yards down the fairway. And then he walked in the direction of that drive, balancing the shell-shock of what had just happened with the determination to make something still happen, to produce something that would send the crowd home happy. The announcer, wonderfully understated, offered the perfect assessment.

“Somehow looks lonely, amidst all that support,” he said.

I thought about that line the rest of the golfing day. This week’s Irish Open and Solheim Cup felt particularly convivial, like events for the golfing collective, best experienced together. In County Down, just 30 miles from McIlroy’s Northern Irish hometown, fans rallied around their local golfing hero at their local golfing paradise as he chased what he said would be “up there with one of the biggest” wins of his life. In Virginia, just 30 miles from the nation’s capital, crowds rallied around their U.S. team as they chased redemption, looking to recapture the cup for the first time in four tries. But mostly that togetherness was happening outside the field of play. The fans, the families, the teams, the rooters. Inside the ropes? If you were the golfer in that position, there were entire tournaments and even entire mini-economies leveraged on what you, the individual, did down the stretch. Sixteen or seventeen holes of good swings only elevates the pressure on the final few. It was lonely as ever. And that’s partly why it was special.

This loneliness isn’t the only beauty of golf; there are others. There’s the elemental beauty of Royal County Down, ultimate linksland, arguably best in the world, set dramatically at the meeting of land and sea and hill. There’s the strategic beauty of team match play, who to pair and how to play off each other. But mostly the beauty of golf is the beauty of individual competition under the gun, of stepping inside the ropes and leaving yourself vulnerable to the euphoria of a heroic win (think Lilia Vu ‘s putt on 17 and her approach on 18, or Hojgaard’s hole-out at 17 and birdie at 18) or the devastation of a heartbreaking loss (think McIlroy’s eagle putt, hanging out wide). The loneliness is the point.

Teddy Roosevelt ‘s been quoted a million times in sportswriting; a million and one won’t hurt. In his iconic speech about the Man in the Arena, he described that man in this way: “… who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat. “

The triumph of high achievement and, even in failure, the pride that comes with daring greatly — that’s golf stuff I like.

Who won the week?

The U.S. team won the Solheim Cup 15.5-12.5, triumphing for the first time in four cups and seven years.

Rasmus Hojgaard won the Irish Open, the biggest of his five career DP World victories, climbing to No. 63 in the world and ensuring he can join his brother Nicolai on the PGA Tour next season.

Patton Kizzire won the Procore Championship, the first event of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Fall, earning his first victory in six years and valuable PGA Tour status in the process.

Jon Rahm won LIV’s Chicago event as well as LIV’s season-long order of merit, finishing off an impressive debut season with top-10s in every event that he finished (a dozen top-10s plus one WD).

Steve Stricker won the Sanford International for the third consecutive season, hitting the flagstick on the fourth playoff hole to set up a winning birdie.

NOT-WINNERS

Who didn’t win?

If you’re looking for final form pre-Presidents Cup, here’s how the six competitors in action at this week’s Procore fared:

Mackenzie Hughes finished T4, including a second-place showing in strokes gained from tee to green; that’s encouraging.

Corey Conners was T7 just behind his countryman; he was second in the field off the tee and gained strokes putting, both encouraging signs ahead of next week.

Min Woo Lee , the third and final International teamer, finished T32, let down by a cold putter on the weekend.

For the Americans, Sahith Theegala finished T7, his second strong tournament in a row, and gained strokes in every category.

The good news stopped there. Max Homa missed the cut by a shot; he needed birdie at the par-5 18th to make the weekend and made bogey instead. Wyndham Clark finished three shots behind Homa.

SHORT HITTERS

The best and worst from the Solheim Cup, in brief.

The best on the U.S. side? There were a lot of contenders. Rose Zhang was 4-0-0 and smashed statistical records for the most dominant showing. Lauren Coughlin continued the fairytale season of her life and handled the pressure of her home Cup, going 3-0-1. And even though she lost her singles session Nelly Korda played three team sessions of nearly flawless golf and looked more relaxed than we’ve seen her on the course. That was thanks to Megan Khang , who went 3-0-0 and was the fiery emotional center of the team, too. Shoutout to Andrea Lee , too, who went 2-0-1.

The best on the Euro side? Charley Hull gets that title; she played all five sessions and beat Korda leading off Sunday singles. Only one other player — Madelene Sagstrom , who went 2-1-0 — had a winning record, though Celine Boutier, Anna Nordqvist and Georgia Hall each went 2-2-0.

The worst on the U.S. side? It was a disappointing week for Ally Ewing , who went 0-4-0 and has now sadly lost seven consecutive Solheim Cup matches. And Lexi Thompson ‘s perfect Solheim Cup finish slid by when she lost her singles match at No. 18, capping off a 1-3-0 week. All good in victory, though.

The worst on the European side came from Linn Grant , who was a shocking 0-4-0 after going 3-2-0 in her debut last year. Carlota Ciganda also couldn’t quite get going and slipped to 1-3-0 on the week. But even worse than that was the strife and second-guessing that comes with any losing team; in this case Leona Maguire , who entered in middling form but with a 7-2-1 Solheim record, was understandably gutted to play just one of the four team sessions and made that clear . She won her singles match to go 1-1 for the week.

The event’s best was its atmosphere; the matches were lined with enthusiastic fans and the entire thing felt big . Its worst was its Friday morning logistics , a failure so significant it was hard to fathom how they happened. Also, the no-realtime-scoreboard thing drives me nuts.

ONE SWING THOUGHT

You’ve gotta get it there. Kinda.

Every time I watch one of these team match-play competitions I get irrationally frustrated watching the best players in the world hitting must-make putts and absolutely hammering them through the break and like, five feet past the cup. In match play it’s easy to get obsessed with the idea that you “have to get it there,” which is true, but if you take that to the extreme you run into two problems:

1. You’re putting differently than you usually do, so you’ll mess up the break.

2. You make the hole effectively smaller by hitting the ball too hard; the hole is biggest at dying speed.

This will upset me again next week at the Presidents Cup, I’m sure.

ONE BIG QUESTION

How much do LIV guys make?

For once we actually have an answer here, too. After Jon Rahm claimed the season-long $18 million bonus on Sunday, Joaquin Niemann got $8 mil for second and Sergio Garcia earned $4 mil for third, LIV released its player year-to-date earnings including season-end payouts. Here’s how that top 10 looks:

2. Joaquin Niemann , $24.38 mil

3. Sergio Garcia , $17.09 mil

4. Tyrrell Hatton $11.63 mil

5. Brooks Koepka $11.57 mil

How does that compare to the PGA Tour? You’ve probably read by now that Scottie Scheffler earned more than $62 mil, so his historic season has him well out in front. But No. 2 Xander Schauffele made $23.2, right in line with Niemann’s second-place earnings. And the Tour hands out more money to more guys; 40th on the LIV list is Danny Lee at $2.36 mil while Cam Davis made over $4 mil in the same spot on the PGA Tour’s list. The LIV guys make a ton of money, they do so in fewer events and many got beefy signing bonuses. But it turns out the PGA Tour is giving out some big-time cash, too.

One big question to leave you with, then: How much did Rahm actually get for going?

Royal County Down.

I love Ireland, so perhaps I’m biased — or perhaps I just have proper judgment. The Irish Open rules. And Royal County Down rules. What a scene at 18.

Jon Rahm clinched an eye-watering £16.6 million in prize money by becoming LIV Golf individual champion.

The Spaniard went head-to-head with Joaquin Niemann as the only other contender for the championship over the weekend. The season-long race culminated in Chicago, where a 12-foot birdie put on the 17th hole gave Rahm a three-shot lead and essentially sealed him a career-high payday .

It was the culmination of an impressive year for Rahm, who achieved top-10 finishes in all 13 LIV events he competed in. His win at Bolingbrook was his second of the campaign, having topped the leaderboard at LIV Golf London in June.

Rahm shocked the sporting world with his decision to leave the PGA for LIV last December, reportedly inking a £386million ($500m) contract to join the breakaway league. However, his switch has resulted in several huge windfalls and significantly boosted his net worth.

By becoming the LIV Golf individual champion, Rahm claimed a £13.6million ($18million) reward. This was in addition to the £3million ($4million) the two-time major winner received for finishing first in Chicago, meaning he pocketed £16.6million in total. Overall, Rahm has made around £35million ($46m) during his debut season with LIV, which could be boosted by his Legion XIII team in the last LIV event of the season.

In his final year on the PGA, Rahm set a single-season record by raking in more than £12million ($15m), ending his time on the tour with more than £38million ($51m) in career earnings. On the European circuit, he also bagged over £20million ($26m) on the DP World Tour.

It means that Rahm has earned around £93million for his exploits on the golf course, combined with lucrative sponsorship deals with brands such as Callaway, TopGolf, VistaJet, Mercedes-Benz and Rolex. Celebrity Net Worth estimates Rahm to be worth £76million ($100m) but that remains significantly lower than Rory McIlroy .

Four-time major winner McIlroy was claimed to have seen his personal wealth rise by 12.5 per cent in May, with the golf star valued at £225million, according to the Sunday Times Rich List . The Northern Irishman has since added to that figure by finishing runner-up at the US Open.

McIlroy has earned £68million ($90m) from his time with the PGA and has also secured endorsement deals with Nike, Omega, TaylorMade and others. He suffered heartbreak at the US Open in June as he chased after an elusive fifth major title but his agony was somewhat softened by a £1.75m ($2.3m) windfall.

Having recently tied for ninth at the Tour Championship, McIlroy was back in action at the Irish Open. The 35-year-old finished second at Royal County Down and was awarded £500k.

The 28-year-old has enjoyed a fantastic season - winning the Masters and the gold medal at the Paris 2024 Games.

His stunning season ended with him scooping the Tour Championship earlier this month - banking a cool £19million .

It has brought his 2024 earnings to a staggering £41.2m having triumphed in seven PGA Tour events.

Scheffler has seamlessly transitioned from using a Scotty Cameron Timeless Tourtype GSS putter - which he won six PGA Tour titles with last year - to a TaylorMade Spider Tour X putter.

With the Spider in his bag at Bay Hill, Scheffler won by five strokes at the Genesis Invitational.

During an appearance on the  Pardon My Take  podcast, Scheffler was asked: "The story goes that Rory said you should look at a different putter and the next thing you know is you're using a different putter, and Rory just shot himself in the foot because now you can putt.

"I don't know if that's something you heard from Rory or something you had planned for a while?”

To which Scheffler said: "No, it’s something that I’d thought about, but don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story, right?

"My putting coach and I thought about it. At the beginning of the year I’d improved a little bit.

"But I still wasn’t where I thought I could be. I thought I could get better.

“It was nice for me to get out of my own head, look at something different.

"I used to line up the ball where I wanted to hit it when I was putting and it would kinda get in my head a little bit.”

McIlroy had attempted to play down his own advice in March, as he remarked: "It’s very hard to talk about other players.

"Scottie has had enough criticism about his putting – you guys talk about it enough.

"It was me, basically, trying to talk about myself more than talk about Scottie.”

Scottie Scheffler was left red-faced as he addressed his incredible earnings on the PGA Tour.

Scheffler has enjoyed a superb 2024, having clinched his second Masters title and the lucrative FedEx Cup, which comes with a hefty £19million prize. Despite Xander Schauffele's triumphs at the USPGA Championship and the Open Championship, Scheffler maintains a solid lead in the world rankings.

The 28-year-old's net worth is estimated to be around $90 million (close to £70million), with a jaw-dropping $62million (£47million) earned this year alone. When confronted with these figures on the Pardon My Take show, Scheffler appeared somewhat sheepish.

"I did read that [online], yep, I think so. I don't really have much to say on that," he said. "It's been a fun year. I don't really think about the money very much.

"I think that becomes a big deal with the FedEx and everything. At the end of the day, I'm just playing golf. The money is just a gift on top of that. It's really all it is."

Scheffler then reminisced about his first modest paycheque from the PGA Tour and how significant it felt back then. He added: "I remember playing my first PGA Tour event as a pro. I didn't play great.

"I finished in maybe 40th place. It was two weeks after graduating from college and I made 30 or 40 grand, something like that. You get a text from the tour after each tournament telling you how much money you've made.

"I looked at it and thought, 'Oh my gosh, that's how much I got paid? That's insane'. So it's pretty fun. I still feel like a kid. I get to go and play golf and have fun."

Scheffler is gearing up for another lucrative event as he prepares to join forces with Rory McIlroy for a head-to-head clash with Bryson Dechambeau and Brooks Koepka in a PGA Tour versus LIV Golf match-up. Although there's no prize fund up for grabs, the four golf stars are set to bag substantial appearance fees for their participation.

This unique face-off in Las Vegas in December marks another step towards a warmer relationship between PGA Tour and LIV Golf. The rival tours remain in discussions following the preliminary "framework agreement" announced in June last year between the PGA Tour and DP World Tour and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), the financial muscle behind LIV.

Jon Rahm clinched an eye-watering £16.6 million in prize money by becoming LIV Golf individual champion.

The Spaniard went head-to-head with Joaquin Niemann as the only other contender for the championship over the weekend. The season-long race culminated in Chicago, where a 12-foot birdie put on the 17th hole gave Rahm a three-shot lead and essentially sealed him a career-high payday .

It was the culmination of an impressive year for Rahm, who achieved top-10 finishes in all 13 LIV events he competed in. His win at Bolingbrook was his second of the campaign, having topped the leaderboard at LIV Golf London in June.

Rahm shocked the sporting world with his decision to leave the PGA for LIV last December, reportedly inking a £386million ($500m) contract to join the breakaway league. However, his switch has resulted in several huge windfalls and significantly boosted his net worth.

By becoming the LIV Golf individual champion, Rahm claimed a £13.6million ($18million) reward. This was in addition to the £3million ($4million) the two-time major winner received for finishing first in Chicago, meaning he pocketed £16.6million in total. Overall, Rahm has made around £35million ($46m) during his debut season with LIV, which could be boosted by his Legion XIII team in the last LIV event of the season.

In his final year on the PGA, Rahm set a single-season record by raking in more than £12million ($15m), ending his time on the tour with more than £38million ($51m) in career earnings. On the European circuit, he also bagged over £20million ($26m) on the DP World Tour.

It means that Rahm has earned around £93million for his exploits on the golf course, combined with lucrative sponsorship deals with brands such as Callaway, TopGolf, VistaJet, Mercedes-Benz and Rolex. Celebrity Net Worth estimates Rahm to be worth £76million ($100m) but that remains significantly lower than Rory McIlroy .

Four-time major winner McIlroy was claimed to have seen his personal wealth rise by 12.5 per cent in May, with the golf star valued at £225million, according to the Sunday Times Rich List . The Northern Irishman has since added to that figure by finishing runner-up at the US Open.

McIlroy has earned £68million ($90m) from his time with the PGA and has also secured endorsement deals with Nike, Omega, TaylorMade and others. He suffered heartbreak at the US Open in June as he chased after an elusive fifth major title but his agony was somewhat softened by a £1.75m ($2.3m) windfall.

Having recently tied for ninth at the Tour Championship, McIlroy was back in action at the Irish Open. The 35-year-old finished second at Royal County Down and was awarded £500k.
