Roatán Cruise Port

Roatan Cruise Center

There are two cruise ports located on the island of Roatán.

Mahogany Bay Cruise Center

Carnival Cruise Line built this port/cruise center, which can accommodate two mega-ships. Carnival cruise ships dock here, along with Princess and Holland America cruise lines.

Mahogany Bay Cruise Center is a gigantic 20-acre welcome center with a “private” beach. Many cruisers will spend the day within the Cruise Center visiting the restaurants, bars, duty-free shops, craft markets, or just relaxing on the beach.

The Port of Roatán (Also Known as Coxen Hole)

This port can accommodate three cruise ships at a time. Ships from all of the other cruise lines (besides those mentioned above) typically dock here.

This port is within walking distance of Roatán island’s largest city, Coxen Hole. The port terminal has restrooms, taxi stands, tour and excursion pick-ups, and an ATM.

What Cruise Passengers Need to Know About Roatán Cruise Port

Roatan

Roatán’s official currency is the Honduran lempira (HNL). However, cash (including USD!) reigns supreme here. You can pay with U.S. Dollars on Roatán, just expect to get change back in lempiras.

The official language in Roatán is Spanish, but English (with a Creole twist) is widely spoken.

The time zone in Roatán, Honduras, is Central Standard Time, which is one hour ahead of the Eastern time zone.

Roatán is an island in Central America located just off the Honduras coast. Its climate is tropical rainforest, with temperatures hovering in the 80-degree Fahrenheit range year-round.

Mid-July through October is considered the “warm season,” with temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s. Roatán is very humid year-round, with humidity reaching 90% in the last four months of the year.

The rainy season in Roatán is from September through July.

Getting Around Roatán

The island of Roatán is 48 miles long and 5 miles wide at its widest point. It is safest to book tours (whether private or cruise ship excursions) to get around Roatán.

Whether you port in Mahogany Bay Cruise Center or Coxen Bay, activities are within walking distance. The Mahogany Bay Cruise Center is a 20-acre complex with a beach, restaurants, bars, and shopping areas.

Coxen Hole is Roatán’s largest city. Activities and amenities, including shopping, restaurants, and bars, are within walking distance of the port.

Public Transit

There are many taxis and buses available for transport in Roatán. The “buses” are typically 16-passenger vans running regular routes between Coxen Hole and West End or French Harbour.

Taxis can be private “privado,” which costs a little more, or “colectivo,” which means you might pick up and drop off other people along your route. This is a fun way to chat with locals but might take a little longer to get to and from your destination.

Car Rentals

Car rentals are available on Roatán, with rental kiosks near the cruise terminal. The island is easy to navigate, just watch for horses and cows on the road.

The Best Roatán Shore Excursions

Roatan shore excursions

Roatán has a different vibe than other Caribbean cruise ports . This Honduran island has a Central American influence with a Caribbean twist.

Roatán is situated on top of exposed ancient coral reefs, and just off-shore is the second largest reef system in the world: the Mesoamerican Reef System, also known as the Great Mayan Reef.

The diverse culture and unique natural wonders of Roatán make for a one-of-a-kind cruise port experience. Here are 22 of the best Roatán Shore Excursions.

1. Mahogany Bay Cruise Center

Carnival designed this 20-acre port complex to be an excursion in itself. The 800-foot-long white sand Mahogany Beach is part of the Cruise Center. You can get off the ship and spend the day reading on a beach chair or swimming in the crystal clear waters.

This beach gets busier and louder as the day goes on, so grab your chair early or choose a different beach if you are looking for quiet. The Cruise Center has a mix of duty-free shops and retailers, including Diamonds International, Del Sol, and Piranha Joes.

If you are hungry, there are several restaurants in the Cruise Center. Stop by Fat Tuesday’s atop Monkey Hill for amazing views, some Caribbean Jerk chicken, and a cold and refreshing “Banana Banshee” Daquiri.

2. Magical Flying Beach Chair

This is a fun experience that is unique to Roatán. Immediately after disembarking at Mahogany Bay Port, there is a chairlift that you can take to transport you to nearby Mahogany Bay Beach.

You’ll find the Magical Flying Beach Chair up the hill and to the right of the Cruise Center. You can purchase an “all-day pass” for unlimited use.

Be aware that the Flying Beach Chair frequently stops for people to get on and off. The chance to see iguanas in the trees and the magnificent ocean view make this a pleasant option.

3. Shop ‘Til you Drop at The Town Center Coxen Bay

Roatan cruise port shopping

There is a fantastic variety of duty-free boutiques and local souvenir shops in The Town Center shopping area at the Port of Roatán.

Be sure to stop at “Yaba Ding Ding” for local handmade arts and crafts, including Garifuna and Lenca pottery artwork. If you love photography, you’ll marvel at the underwater photos by Roatán local Shawn Jackson in his gallery here.

4. Snorkel, Scuba, and Relax at West Bay Beach

The world’s second-longest reef system, the Mesoamerican Reef, lies just off the coast of West Bay Beach. This beach is 30-45 minutes from the cruise ship docks and has some of the best snorkeling and diving in Roatán.

The beach is public and free to enter. However, paying a nearby resort for their day-use fee gives you access to chairs and a break from the vendors trying to sell their goods and services.

If you want to snorkel or scuba, water taxis from West Bay Beach will take you closer to the reef.

5. Cuddle a Sloth at an Animal Sanctuary

Roatan sloth

Several animal sanctuaries exist in Roatán. These excursions typically include the opportunity to hold a sloth, feed monkeys, and interact with parrots and macaws.

You can book a private tour, which is a little more expensive but allows you to move through the animal sanctuary (and have the experiences!) more quickly. This experience takes around an hour, so it is a good one to bundle with other excursions.

6. Spend the Day at The Little French Key

This resort is a one-stop excursion spot. You can pay a fee to participate in activities like horseback riding, swimming with pigs, massages, manicures, snorkeling and scuba diving, kayaking, rope swings, and a gift shop. They also have a mini zoo where they can interact with animals.

Look for the VIP pass, which includes drink vouchers, a lunch plate, a massage, horseback riding, and access to a less-crowded beach. Little French Key is a 30-minute drive from the port.

7. Taste the Unique Flavor of Wild Honduran Chocolate at a Chocolate Factory

Roatan Chocolate Experience

Cacao beans in Honduras are unique because they are grown in the wild instead of on plantations. Several chocolate factories can be visited to try this tasty treat.

Factory tours are usually a part of a “bundled” excursion. If you are a chocolate lover, this is a “must” for treats and souvenir shopping in Roatán.

8. Scuba Dive at the Mayan Reef

You don’t want to miss the opportunity to scuba dive in the second-largest reef system in the world: the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. Scuba diving is one of the top things cruisers recommend for porting here. Roatán has excursions available for every level of diver, from beginner to scuba-certified.

The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is home to diverse sea life, including colorful fish, coral, sea turtles, eels, stingrays, sponges, starfish, shrimps, and lobster. Most Scuba excursions take place on the West Side, nearest the reef, and will take several hours.

There are many dive shops in Roatán. You can book a beginner scuba excursion, where you learn scuba basics in the safety of a pool and then venture to the reef. Many boutique diving excursions will allow you to use your scuba certifications for magnificent dives in the deep.

9. See the Island’s Diversity while Horseback Riding

Horseback riding is a relaxing way to escape the crowds and see the diversity of this beautiful island.

There are many different types of rides available, from beach horseback riding to mountain trails. Some excursions offer a combo that includes a ride through local villages, up into the mountains, and even a ride along the beach.

10. Bike Around an Island on Hydrobikes

If you are looking for an out-of-the-ordinary water sports experience, hydrobiking is an exciting choice. Hydrobikes have pedals like a traditional bicycle, but are on floats so you glide on top of the ocean.

Your guide will take you on a tour around a private island near French Key. Hydrobikes are easy for all skill levels and are an active way to spend a few hours in Roatán. Just be sure to put on plenty of sunscreen.

11. Eat and Beach at Ginger’s on Half Moon Bay

Half-Moon Bay is located on the West End of Roatán. It is an exceptional beach for swimming and snorkeling, and the location of a delicious Caribbean Grill called Ginger’s.

You can use the beach chairs at Ginger’s if you order food OR just come for the delicious fresh seafood. Catch a game on the TV and order coconut shrimp and a frozen mojito.

12. Cruise Through the Mangroves

Located on the East End of Roatán, this excursion includes transportation to Oakridge’s traditional Caribbean fishing village. The town is an interesting visit, with buildings constructed on stilts over the water and fishing boats bobbing in the bay.

In Oakridge, you’ll board an authentic cayuco (a small motorized canoe), and travel with a guide through a canal dug out in the mangroves many years ago to connect the harbors and bays. Parts of the tunnel are barely wide enough for the boats to get through.

The land in mangrove forests provides shelter for migratory birds and monkeys, so there is a good chance to see (and hear) unique Roatán wildlife.

13. Spot Sea Turtles Underwater and On Land

If you love sea turtles, Roatán is an outstanding place to see them in their natural habitat. This island has three types of sea turtles: Hawksbill, Green, and Loggerhead Turtles.

The best time to see sea turtles on land is during their nesting period from July to August, when they come ashore to nest on West Bay Beach and Paya Bay Beach. If you are in Roatán during the non-nesting months, you can also observe these beautiful sea creatures gliding in the crystal-clear waters.

Dive and snorkel excursions are available that will take you to spots where sea turtles frequent. Typically, they are on the West End.

14. Take a Historical Dune Buggy Tour to Punta Gorda

This half-day excursion will take you on an adventure up to the North Shore and the historic fishing village of Punta Gorda. Drivers need to be 16 years or older and have a driver’s license.

Follow a tour guide on an adventurous dune buggy drive to the Punta Gorda community. Once you’ve arrived, enjoy a dance and music show by the Garinagu (Garifuna), natives of Roatán.

Afterwards, you can purchase lunch from nearby restaurants, including Garifuna favorites like Machuca, a delicious mash of green and sweet plantains rolled into bites and dunked into tasty soups.

15. Monkey Around at Gumbalimba Park

This 20-acre beachfront adventure park offers many options for adventure seekers. Your tour guide will teach you about the history of the island of Roatán and its people while you hike around and observe animals, including monkeys and macaws, roaming in their natural environment.

After you’ve met the monkeys, you can get a monkey’ s-eye view of the park’s Trail Canopy Tour. You’ll zipline between 17 cable platforms extending from 120 to 500 feet in length.

Gumbalina also has water activities, including kayaking and going to the beach.

16. See Fish Without Getting Wet on a Glass Bottom Boat Ride

Glass bottom boats depart regularly from the beach at West Bay on Roatán. If you cannot snorkel or scuba but want to see the wonders of the reef, this is a fantastic way to do it.

These boats have windows that are underwater in a “semi-submarine” experience. Choose a glass-bottom boat ride if you want to witness the gorgeous marine life in Roatán without the hassle of sand and sunburns.

17. Underwater Scooter like a BOSS

If you want a unique scuba-like experience without the certification, you can book a BOSS (Breathing Observation Submersible Scooter) excursion. Your adventure will start with a catamaran ride out to the reef. Once you arrive, you’ll have the option to use snorkel equipment or try out the BOSS.

The BOSS submersible electric scooter has an oxygen-filled breathing helmet attached. You’ll be able to breathe freely while you scooter around 8 feet below the water surface, viewing the colorful marine life in Roatán.

18. Learn About Local Flora at the Carambola Botanical Garden

The 40-acre botanical garden is home to a variety of beautiful plants, including orchids, fruit and nut trees, flowering plants, medicinal plants, the world-famous Honduran mahogany tree, and the popular “Chocolate Tree.”

The botanical gardens can be visited as a self-guided tour, or for more money, you can have an informational guided tour by the founder of the garden. Plan on walking along the jungle paths for anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

19. Snorkel Right-off Tabyana Beach

The reef is more accessible from this beautiful beach. Unlike other beaches in Roatán, which require a short boat ride to reach the reef, you can explore it about 300 feet off the shore of Tabyana Beach, making it one of the best beaches for snorkeling.

Some excursions include snorkeling at Tabyana, or you can take a 20-25 minute taxi cab ride from the port.

You can relax on towels on the public beach or pay a resort fee to use nearby chairs. Local beach vendors aren’t allowed in roped-off areas, so if you want to relax without interruption, the resort fee is worth the money.

20. Spend the Day on the Private Island of Maya Key

Maya Key is a small private island that is located 3 minutes from the Roatán Cruise Terminal and 15 minutes from Mahogany Bay Cruise Terminal.

This 11.5-acre island has two beaches, a 70,000-gallon pool, an animal rescue center, jungle garden paths, a Mayan Interpretation Center, A Honduras Art Exhibit, a restaurant, and a shopping center.

Day passes for Maya Key start at $35 and include a tour of the wildlife center, access to the beaches and pools, and the use of restroom facilities. It will cost extra for the museums, food and drinks, lockers and shopping.

21. Roatan Craft Markets

Roatan Rusty Fish craft market

There are some awesome craft markets in Roatan. Many items are hand made by locals. One great shop is Rusty Fish, which uses recyclable materials.

22. Sample Local Rum at the Roatán Rum Company

Rum cakes, rum cigars, and, of course, rum are the stars of this excursion. Located between West End and West Bay, the Roatán Rum Company offers samples of unique artisan rums (dark chocolate, spiced, and Caribbean coconut, to name a few) and rum cakes.

Roatán Rum Co. is located right across from El Faro Lighthouse and next door to a small souvenir market. Many excursions combine the three.

23. Choose Your Adventure with a Customizable “Best of Roatán” Tour

If you are having a hard time deciding between all of these exciting excursions, a “Best of” tour might be the way to have your rum cake and eat it, too.

You can choose the activities you want and have the expertise of a local driver to get you where you need to go. Roatán is small enough that you should be able to fit in several activities, and tour guides are often flexible with the weather.

A customizable tour is a great way to experience all that Roatán has to offer.

The Basics To Know Of Roatán

When visiting Roatán, it’s important to know a few basics. Roatán is a tropical paradise island located just north of mainland Honduras. It is known for its thrilling activities, stunning nature, and rich history.

For the majority of cruisers from The United States, speaking with locals in Roatán won’t be much trouble. The official language in Roatán is English, with the secondary language being Spanish.

The local currency is the Honduran Lempira, so exchanging some currency before your trip is a good idea. But it is not necessary, as most places take your credit card. I found that when visiting I did not need to exchange beforehand. However, if I was staying for a few days to a week, I would definitely exchange it for the Honduran Lempira.

Roatán is located on the Caribbean Sea , surrounded by crystal-clear waters and breathtaking beaches. The island is also located in the Central Standard Time Zone.

Should you drive while exploring the island? I personally recommend relying on local transportation options or hiring a driver, as the roads can be challenging to navigate for visitors.

So get ready for an unforgettable adventure in Roatán, where you can immerse yourself in the beauty of nature and indulge in thrilling experiences.

A Brief History Of Roatán

Roatán Island was originally inhabited by relation to the tribal peoples of the Paya, the Maya, the Lenca, or the Tolupan, tribes from mainland Honduras. Once the Spanish took over the area, Roatán was devasted by the slave trade and disease.

Between 1550 and 1700, Roatán was occupied by the English. This occupation included English, Dutch, and French pirates who would attack Spanish ships leaving the mainland.

In the 1830s, Roatán Island was populated by people of the Cayman Islands. The majority of those living today on the island can trace their roots back to this moment. They came over after the 1833 Slavery Abolition Act. Former slave owners and slaves both came over to settle Roatán Island.

In the 1850s, the British turned Roatán Island over to Honduras. Since then the island has been an English-speaking island with its strong British history. However, over the last 100 years, many Spanish-speaking migrants from the mainland have been moving to Roatán to call it home.

When it comes to shopping in Roatán, you will be able to find plenty of small shops all around the tourist areas. You will find that most of the shops are based around jewelry, knick-knacks, and other souvenir items.

I personally love to find small restaurants or bars on West Bay Beach. It just feels great to sit at an outside location with the water about 100 feet from you taking it all in.

There are so many options from local cuisine to international food to choose from while you are searching. Explore the areas and find what looks good for you on that day. When it comes to food on Roatán, I like to let my eyes and nose choose what to eat by seeing and smelling what looks great at the moment.

Other Things To Do In Roatán Honduras When On A Cruise

There is a great spot just off West Bay Beach called Gumbalimba Park. This park is set on 20 acres of land with beachfront access. You will see free-roaming macaws, white-faced monkeys, and iguanas.

Gumbalimba Park has a pool, museum, botanical gardens, and an animal interaction center. Look to be able to do many adventure activities as well like horseback riding and zip lining. This is a great all-in-one place to go, especially if you are visiting as a family.

Is Roatán Walkable?

Large turtle on top of a building with balconies

Roatán Island is about 48 miles long with lush forest throughout it and the popular areas are spread throughout the island. Is Roatán walkable? The easy answer is no but with a yes.

The “no” part of the answer. To get to places like West Bay Beach or West End you will need to take a taxi. You will find that taxis usually run around $20 for one passenger and an additional $10 for each other passenger. Of course, this can fluctuate at any time.

But, once you arrive in the area you are going to, then the answer is “yes”. You will be able to walk around the areas with ease.

Another “yes” part is that there are plenty of things to see and do around Mohagany Bay (for Carnival ships) and the Port of Roatán (other cruise ships). There is a beach that is about a 10-minute walk from the cruise ports and lots of options for food and shopping within the area too.

The best way to do it though, is to sign up with a tour that will get you to where you are going. They usually pick up at or near the cruise port and will return you. It is a great way to take the worry out of your mind and enjoy your time in Roatán.

Is Roatán Safe?

I do get asked a lot if Roatán is safe. Personally, I have felt safe there. If you stay in the tourist areas with all the other cruisegoers, you will feel safe as well. Of course, like every city, there are areas that are less safe than others.

I recommend staying in groups and not trying to venture out by yourself unless you are in a high-tourist traffic area. Be vigilant and aware of your surroundings.

Again, I have felt safe when visiting Roatán Island in the past. Also, if you take tours, the companies are built on reviews and will not want to put any guest in harm’s way.

Is Roatán Honduras Worth Visiting?

So, is Roatán Honduras worth visiting? In my opinion, absolutely yes! Roatán is one of my favorite places in The Caribbean.

As you can see from the information I have provided, there are many things to see and do while visiting Roatán Honduras on a cruise.

In fact, with so many options to do in Roatán, I recommend visiting the island as many times as possible to try everything.

And as highlighted above, if you are a scuba diver or snorkeler, Roatán Island is a diver’s dream location. It has the second largest barrier reef in the world, The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. Just seeing that alone is worth coming to Roatán Honduras.

I will say this to answer the question, I can’t wait to go back!

Roatan Cruise Port

Booking Excursions through Cruise Line vs. Private Company

When visiting Roatan on a cruise, one of the important decisions you’ll need to make is how to plan your onshore excursions.

You have two primary options: booking excursions through the cruise line or opting for a private tour company. Each approach has its pros and cons, and the choice ultimately depends on your preferences and priorities.

Booking through the Cruise Line

  • Convenience : Cruise lines offer a seamless booking process. You can reserve excursions online or onboard the ship, making it hassle-free.
  • Reliability : Cruise line excursions are vetted and coordinated by the cruise company. You can trust that they will be well-organized and adhere to your ship’s schedule.
  • Safety : Cruise lines prioritize passenger safety and have established protocols for excursions. They typically work with reputable tour operators.
  • Guaranteed Return : If your cruise line excursion runs late and causes the ship to depart without you, the cruise line is responsible for getting you to the next port.
  • Variety : Cruise lines offer a range of excursions to suit different interests and activity levels.
  • Cost : Cruise line excursions can be more expensive than booking independently, as the cruise line adds a markup for convenience and coordination.
  • Crowds : Cruise line excursions may have larger groups, potentially reducing the personalized experience.
  • Limited Flexibility : Itineraries and schedules are fixed, leaving limited room for customization.

Roatan Cruise Port

Booking through a Private Tour Company

  • Cost Savings : Private tour companies often offer excursions at lower prices, allowing you to get more value for your money.
  • Personalized Experience : Smaller group sizes mean you can enjoy a more personalized and intimate experience.
  • Flexibility : Private tours can often be customized to your preferences, allowing you to explore Roatan at your own pace.
  • Local Knowledge : Local tour guides can provide insights into the island’s culture, history, and hidden gems.
  • Diverse Options : You can choose from a wide range of specialized tours that may not be available through the cruise line.
  • Coordination : You’ll need to coordinate transportation to and from the cruise port, which can be less convenient than cruise line excursions.
  • Safety : While many private tour companies are reputable, there is a degree of responsibility on your part to research and choose a reliable operator.
  • Time Management : Private tours may not adhere to your ship’s schedule as rigorously as cruise line excursions, so you need to be mindful of the departure time.
  • Risk : In the unlikely event of tour delays, the cruise ship may not wait for passengers on private excursions.

Tips for Choosing

To make an informed choice, consider the following tips when looking at Roatan cruise port:

  • Research : Read reviews, check ratings, and gather information about private tour companies to ensure they have a good reputation.
  • Budget : Determine your budget and compare the cost of cruise line excursions with private options.
  • Interests : Choose excursions that align with your interests and the type of experience you seek.
  • Group Size : Consider whether you prefer a larger group experience or a more intimate one.
  • Flexibility : If you value flexibility and customization, private tours may be the better option.
  • Safety : Regardless of your choice, prioritize safety by following the guidance of tour operators and respecting local rules.

Ultimately, both cruise line and private company excursions offer unique advantages.

Your decision should be based on what matters most to you—whether it’s convenience, cost, personalized experiences, or exploring Roatan cruise port’s hidden gems with a local touch.

The Roatan Cruise Ports

There are two cruise ports in Roatan: Coxen Hole and Mahogany Bay . Coxen Hole (Port of Roatan) is a public port that is used by Virgin Voyages , Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, MSC Cruises, and other cruise lines. Mahogany Bay is a private port owned by Carnival Corporation and used by Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, and Holland America Line. Both ports are located on the south side of the island, about 15 miles apart.

Coxen Hole Roatan Cruise Port

Coxen Hole is the main town and capital of Roatan, and it is where the public cruise port is located. This is the port that Virgin Voyages utilizes . It is a bustling port that has a more authentic and local feel than Mahogany Bay. Coxen Hole has a smaller shopping area with local vendors, handicrafts, and souvenirs. It also has a tourist information center, a bank, and an ATM.

Coxen Hole is the gateway to the rest of the island, and it is where you can find more options for shore excursions, transportation, and tours. You can take a taxi, a bus, or a water taxi to explore other parts of Roatan, such as West Bay, West End, Sandy Bay, or French Harbour. It does not have a beach within walking distance, but there are many nearby beaches that you can visit, such as Tabyana Beach, West Bay Beach, or Half Moon Bay Beach.

Mahogany Bay Roatan Cruise Port

Mahogany Bay is a modern and well-designed port that offers a lot of amenities and facilities for cruise travelers. It has a large shopping complex with duty-free shops, souvenir stores, restaurants, bars, and a pharmacy. It also has a transportation hub where you can book shore excursions, rent a car, or take a taxi.

The highlight of Mahogany Bay is Mahogany Beach, a private beach that is exclusive for cruise passengers. You can access the beach by walking for about 5 minutes, or by taking the Magical Flying Beach Chair, a ski-lift-style ride that costs $14 per person for unlimited rides. The beach is clean and spacious, with plenty of lounge chairs, umbrellas, cabanas, and water sports equipment for rent. There is also a beach bar and grill, a volleyball court, and a water park for kids.

Is Roatan, Honduras Safe for Cruise Port Passengers?

One of the common questions that cruise travelers have is whether Honduras is safe for cruise ships. Honduras is a developing country that has a high level of poverty, crime, and violence. However, Roatan is a separate island that is relatively safer and more peaceful than the mainland.

The cruise ports are well-secured and patrolled by security guards and police officers. The cruise lines also work closely with the local authorities and tour operators to ensure the safety and comfort of their passengers. However, this does not mean that you should let your guard down or ignore the common-sense precautions.

I felt safe all throughout Roatan. The locals were friendly and eager to have us visit as travelers. I also met a handful of travelers and ex-pats along the journey.

Enjoy the beach.

The main attraction of Roatan is the beach! The island has over 40 miles of coastline, with white sand, turquoise water, and palm trees. You can find a beach for every taste and preference, from secluded and quiet to lively and fun. Many cruise port visitors will go to West Bay Beach. Tabyana Beach and French Key are also great options for a lovely, relaxing day.

West Bay Beach is one of the best beaches I’ve ever been to. I snorkeled along the shore and saw gorgeous colorful coral and fish. The water is very calm for swimming. And, the sand is a soft powdery white.

Along West Bay beach, there are several hotels and resorts, including the popular Infinity Bay Resort (pictured below). Infinity Bay Resort also boasts La Palapa, Beach Bar and Grill, a fun waterfront hangout with delicious seafood and flowing drinks.

Snorkel the Reef

Another major attraction of Roatan is the reef. The island is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest coral reef system in the world. The reef is home to thousands of species of fish, coral, and other marine life. It is also one of the best places in the world for snorkeling and diving, as the water is warm, clear, and calm.

You can find many spots and sites to explore the reef, from shallow and easy to deep and challenging. Some of the best spots and sites to explore the reef are West Bay Reef, Mahogany Bay Reef, and Mary’s Place which is a dive site on the south side of the island.

You can experience the culture of Roatan by visiting some of the historical and cultural sites, such as the Roatan Museum which displays artifacts and exhibits related to the history, culture, and natural environment of the island, and Garifuna Village, the first Garifuna settlement in Central America.

Visit Roatan Chocolate Factory to see how the fresh chocolate is made on the island. While you’re there, scoop up some souveniers to take home!

You can also visit the Roatan Rum Company, which sells the most delicious rum cake! Some is packaged to easily take home from your travels, though you may have a tough time waiting to dig into it.

Quick side note: Please do not touch or hold the sloths while visiting. This is considered animal cruelty, as sloths don’t like to be touched. Unfortunately, places that have branded themselves as sanctuaries are profiting over the exploitation of the sloths.

18 Best Things to do in Mahogany Bay, Isla Roatan

J. Souza

Going to Mahogany Bay on a cruise? This guide will tell you everything you need to know and everything you can do at the port and surrounding areas.

Mahogany Bay is owned by Carnival Corporation, and the stunning cruise port is located on Roatán Island in Honduras.

As it’s owned by Carnival, other cruise lines under the umbrella of the parent company will use the port on their itineraries, including Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Costa Cruises, and others.

With its sparkling white sand beaches and warm Caribbean waters, it’s easy to see why so many travelers love Mahogany Bay. For many, it is their favorite port of call, and we are going to see why with this guide.

roatan honduras cruise activities

This guide offers helpful information about what there is to do and see at the port and around Roatan. Visitors who come here can enjoy a variety of activities such as snorkeling and scuba diving, which will give them access to the area’s colorful marine life.

Other popular activities include kayaking through the mangroves or taking an island-hopping tour. Cruisers can also take advantage of the shopping opportunities available at Mahogany Bay’s bustling marketplaces. There they can find souvenirs and local hand-made crafts.

Note: Although the port is operated by Carnival it is recommended that you take your passports and photo IDs off the ship with you. Also you should bring some cash as you will not be able to charge purchases to your onboard account.

Mahogany Bay’s Cruise Ship Port

Mahogany Bay cruise port shops

Remember that not every cruise ship visiting Roatan will use the Mahogany Bay cruise port. Roatan, Honduras has two separate cruise ports , depending on which cruise line you’re sailing with: Port of Roatan and Mahogany Bay. The Coxen Hole cruise ship dock ( Port of Roatan ) is used by cruise ships from Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Virgin Voyages, MSC Cruises and others.

The Mahogany Bay cruise port that we are covering today is only used by ships owned by Carnival Corporation. These ships are from cruise lines that include Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, and Costa Cruises . The Mahogany Bay Cruise Center has two berths where two cruise ships can dock at once.

The piers and terminal can get busy and crowded at times with over 8,000 excited passengers ready to explore the welcome center and isle of Roatan. As you exit the pier you will be guided through a duty-free shop . The shop sells a variety of items including beach necessities such as water shoes and sunscreen as well as popular duty-free things. Prices are comparable to those on board the ship.

As you exit the store you will see the walkway leads to an open air plaza with lots of shops. This cruise center is where many of the excursions will meet. You can also book excursions here as well.

Where is Mahogany Bay?

where is mahogany bay

Mahogany Bay is located on the west end of the isla Roatan in the country of Honduras.  Nestled in the protected southern waters of Dixon Cove, the port offers over 20 acres for passengers to enjoy.

It is about 5 miles from the island’s capital, Coxen Hole, which is also where the other cruise port is situated. Roatan is one of three islands that are 31 miles off the coast of mainland Honduras, and it is the biggest and most populated of the three.

It is about 140 miles east of Belize. The island is part of the Western Caribbean Cruise itineraries and is one of the most popular destination ports for Caribbean cruises. From shopping, to eating out at local restaurants, to exploring nearby attractions such as Gumbalimba Park or Blue Harbor Tropical Arboretum – there’s something for everyone to enjoy! There are also plenty of beaches and water activities available for those looking for some fun in the sun.

How Big is Mahogany Bay?

Being only 5 miles wide at its widest point and 38 miles long, the Roatan island offers about 20,000 acres of beautiful nature to explore. Mahogany Bay is just a small part of the island and acts as the entryway into the gorgeous isle.

The cruise center covers about 20-acres of land and Mahogany beach takes up 10-acres of private land.

Note : The Mahogany Bay port is just the cruise port portion of the island of Roatan so there is much more to explore outside of the port. This article will focus mainly on the port of Mahogany Bay but will mention a few things outside of the area as well. You can check out our article on Roatan here.

Things to Do in Mahogany Bay

mahogany bay port tips

There is something for everyone visiting Mahogany Bay. Whether you want to relax on the beach in your beach chair or take part in some exciting shore excursions, there is always something happening.

You can take a dolphin cruise, go snorkeling along the coral reef, or even try out kayaking in the bay. For those looking for more of an adventure, you can dive into the depths of Gumbalimba reef with a scuba dive or sail off on a catamaran tour from West End.

One of the cool things about this port of call is that you can enjoy an amazing beach day without having to spend any money at all. That’s right! The first thing on our list is totally free. Or rather, it CAN be. If you wish to explore the outside area of the cruise port you will turn left and if you wish to visit the beach area turn right.

1. Mahogany Bay Beach

mahogany beach right near the cruise port, showing pier for snorkeling

Mahogany Bay Beach is for cruise passengers only, and it’s free to access. You will need to show your cruise card at the entrance. No transportation is needed to get to the beach as it’s right near the cruise port, although you can try the chair lift to make it easier (more on this later).

The sandy beach is about a 10-minute walk from the cruise terminal. There are tons of water sport activities available. These include snorkel masks and fins, paddle boards, Zayak, Fun Cat, Sea Hammock, Aqua Cycle, Aqua Cycle Boat, Paddle Boat, Hobie Kayak, kayaks, umbrellas, and more.

While the Mahogany Bay Beach is free for cruisers the equipment rental does have an extra cost.

There are plenty of lounge chairs that are free to use, however. You just need to get there early to ensure access to them. If two ships are in port it might be more difficult to find an open lounger if you get there too late.

Only a few lounge chairs are in the shade so those fill up fast. If you want to make sure you have some shade on your beach day you can rent a clam shell for $26 for the entire day.

Loungers and clam shells at Mahogany Beach

If you want to upgrade your day at the beach you can rent a cabana. Air-conditioned cabanas come with two lounge chairs, a hammock, beach accessories, a small TV, a safe to keep valuable safe, Wi-Fi, and waiter service in a semi-private beach area.

There’s also a refrigerator stocked with sodas and water. Fully air-conditioned beach cabanas come with two lounge chairs, a hammock, necessary beach items, free Wi-Fi and waiter service in a semi-secluded beach area.

The beach is over 800 feet long and offers some secluded lounger retreats, a dock for snorkeling, and a two-story gazebo that overlooks the pristine waters.

If you get hungry while hanging out at the beach there is an open-air restaurant right there. Fat Tuesday is also right outside the beach entrance and has an extensive menu with food and drinks. There are also 5 or 6 different places right in and around the main cruise center area.

There are restrooms and showers right there at the beach just near the restaurants, so you can rinse all the sand off before heading back to the ship.

2. Take the Nature Trail

Nature trail at Mahogany Bay

The nature trail in Mahogany Bay will take you to the free beach area. There is a more straightforward path to get there as well but the nature walk offers some interesting vegetation along the way, along with some good photo ops of your cruise ship.

As the trail winds through the wooded area it bends around towards the water with only slight elevation. Having to step over tree roots that could trip you up, be mindful there is some loose gravel along the path as well.

If you’re walking to or from Mahogany Beach you might as well try the nature trail during one of your walks just to spice things up a little.

3. Ride the Magic Flying Chairlift

magic flying chairlift in mahogany bay

Still, the views from the Magic Flying Chair are pretty spectacular, and after a long day playing water sports at the beach you might just want to sit down and take in the stunning views of Roatan on your way back to the dock at Mahogany Bay.

Note: The chairlift will not save you time as it moves rather slowly. Also, you will be above the tree canopy which provides great views of the ship and water, but that also means you will be in the sun a lot.

4. Enjoy a Zip Line Adventure

A zip line adventure is a great way to experience the Caribbean! On your cruise to Roatan, you’ll be able to book a zip line excursion at the Mahogany Bay Cruise Center. The cruise center is within walking distance of the port and beach, so it’s easy to get there from your cruise ship.

The excursion takes you across the island, giving you a unique aerial view of Roatan that you won’t get anywhere else. If you’re looking for an adrenaline-filled adventure while on your cruise, taking a zip line tour is definitely worth it. You’ll be able to see stunning views of the Caribbean and even make stops along the way for some fun in the sun.

You can book an zip line adventure both at Extreme Adventure Park and also Gumbalimba Park. Each will cost about $100 per person.

5. Snorkeling in and Around Mahogany Bay

Snorkeling at Mahogany Bay

There are some amazing reefs around the island of Roatan. And with over 100 miles of coastline you have plenty of options. But you don’t have to go far from the Mahogany Bay cruise port to find some great spots as well.

Though the beach is man-made there is some great beginner-friendly snorkeling locations right off the pier. The reef has some great coral and marine life that most casual snorkelers will enjoy. Here are some of the best snorkeling locations around the island:

  • Little French Cay
  • West Bay Beach
  • Starfish Alley
  • West End Reef

There are also plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops to explore in the area. Whether you’re looking for souvenirs or local cuisine, you’ll be able to find something to suit your needs. Be sure to take a cable car ride up into the mountains for breathtaking views of Roatan’s stunning landscape!

7. Spend The Day At West Bay Beach

west bay beach, Roatan

For entrance into the beach area the cost is $27 for children and $35 for adults. Children 4 and under are free.

The drive from the cruise terminal to West Bay Beach is about 25 minutes long and will take you across mountainous jungles and incredible views. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing beach day or exciting water activities such as snorkeling, West Bay Beach won’t disappoint.

The bay offers stunning views of the Caribbean Sea and nearby islands, while the beach area has plenty of loungers and umbrellas to enjoy your day under the sun. The warm waters are also perfect for swimming and kayaking, making it an ideal destination for all ages. With so much to do and see at West Bay Beach, it’s easy to understand why it is one of Roatan’s most popular spots.

8. All-Inclusive Beach Club

roatan honduras cruise activities

You will have a server who will bring you drinks and lunch so you never even have to get out of your lounger.  There are also over the water cabanas that you can book. There is a place just for kids and swings in the water if you want to get that perfect Instagram shot from your vacation.

Excursions generally last about four hours at the beach club before heading back to the ship.

9. Visit the Monkey and Sloth Hangout

Located in French Cay, Daniel Johnson’s Monkey and Sloth Hangout is a family-run animal sanctuary. At the Hangout you will get to interact with the sloths and monkeys and learn all about these fascinating creators.

You will get to even hold a sloth, which is a unique experience in itself, and something you will never forget. Besides the animal sanctuary, the family-owned company also offers island tours, kayaking, hydro bikes, and snorkeling adventures. You can check out their website here .

Then the tour will take you to an authentic Cayuco canoe where the guide will take you through the mangrove tunnel. With so much wildlife to see along the way this is definitely a tour for nature lovers.

12. Relax At Little French Key

Little French Key is a private island off the coast of Roatan, Honduras in the Caribbean Sea. It is best known for its picturesque beach and turquoise waters, ideal for snorkeling and kayaking. Visitors can take a Mahogany Bay Cruise from the Cruise Center to reach the island, which is also serviced by other day cruises.

Once at Little French Key, you can relax on the white sand beach or lounge on one of the many hammocks strewn around the property. There are several restaurants and bars that serve international cuisine and drinks for visitors to enjoy. Plus, there are plenty of activities such as swimming, snorkeling, kayaking and more.

We had a group of 22 so we decided to divide and conquer and try out a few of the cruise excursions Roatan had to offer.

We did a lot of research before our cruise, and what we found was in Honduras it was significantly cheaper to book with Viator compared to what the cruise line offered.

In this post, we are going to list the best excursions in Roatan! These Honduras excursions are fun and all have very high ratings.  Some of the Roatan tours will include beach activities while others are focused on more adventurous excursions in Roatan.

Let’s explore all of the best Roatan cruise excursions available!

Cruising to Hondarus

Before we jump into all of the fun cruise excursions Roatan has to offer we need to talk about the different Roatan cruise ports in Honduras.

Roatan has two cruise ports.

Mahagony Bay

Mahagony Bay is absolutely amazing! Carnival, Princess, and Holland America are the only cruise lines that have access to this port.  The beaches are superior and it is included in your cruise price.

This might defeat the whole purpose of my post but you really do not need to book a Roatan cruise excursion if you are on those cruise lines, unless you want to do a zip-lining tour or something in the jungle. (Roatan has some of the best ziplining in the Caribbean!)

Towne Center at Port of Roatan

All other cruise lines come into Town Center Port (Coxen Hole). You will want to book a Roatan excursion.  There isn’t too much to do at the port itself.

Because we were on Royal Caribbean, we entered this port and made sure to book a Roatan excursion.

There are lots of fun things to do in Roatan and we are going to list out our top choices for fun Roatan Cruise excursions! Let’s Go!

1. Honduras Zip Lining Tour

The number one Roatan shore excursion is ziplining! Wow, zipling in Honduras is fun! There are a lot of Honduras tour companies to choose from.  We went with Anderson Company and had a fabulous time.

What Does this Roatan Excursion Include?

  • Tour Company is a Short Walk Cruise from Port
  • Beach Pass (Beach Chairs and Changing Room)
  • Transportation with a Bilingual Driver
  • Zip Line Equipment

Rating : 4.5 out of 5 Tour Length: 5 hours 30 minutes

Why choose this tour?   Because is it so much cheaper than booking through the cruise line plus this tour includes 3 activities:  Ziplining, monkey and sloth sanctuary, and a stop at the beach.

Everything is included, and there are no hidden fees! It also has Free Cancellation !

We did a ton of research and because we had a group of 22 we wanted to make sure we were getting the best price! This is the best price!

 Our Review

We were really nervous that our 8-year-old old who is a little scared of heights would not enjoy this, but man were we wrong.  He loved it. The guide made everyone feel comfortable and even got us doing flips! It was awesome! We had so much fun zipling in Honduras!  I highly recommend booking a Zipline tour with the Anderson Company!

2. Roatan Snorkeling Excursions

Honduras has the best snorkeling I have ever experienced!  Before I went on our cruise I had several people tell me that they loved snorkeling in Honduras even more than Hawaii!

Seriously, I didn’t believe them at first but now I have to say that I agree! If you have read my blog, you know how much I love Hawaii!

The snorkeling in Honduras is unbelievable! I would 100% choose a Honduras snorkeling excursion unless I had little kids with me or those who are not strong swimmers.   This might be one of the best Roatan cruise excursions available!

What Types of Roatan Snorkeling Excursion Tours are Available?

I am going to list out a few options, please note that all of these tours are highly rated and each offers a different experience.

  • Roatan 3 Stop Snorkeling Adventure (5 out of 5 Stars)
  • Kayak Harbor Adventure and Reef Snorkel (5 out of 5 Stars)
  • Catamaran Tiki Snorkel (5 out of 5 Stars)
  • Private Yacht Snorkeling Adventure (5 out of 5 Stars)

Rating: All of these tours are 5-star! Tour Length :  All tours are around 3 hours.

Why choose these tours?   Like I said before, the snorkeling is amazing in Honduras.  All of these give you an option of transportation whether by car, kayak, or boat.

Some of these tours include beverages and snacks or even lunch.  You will have to determine what sounds the best to you and then see what is included in each individual Roatan snorkeling excursion.

Our Roatan Excursion Review

Hands down the Roatan snorkeling excursion is worth it. I like that there were a few options with a price range that will fit every budget, especially if you are traveling in a large group.

I have never seen coral as big as in Honduras. It actually is a part of the second-largest barrier reef in the World. There is so much, which makes it an awesome habitat for colorful fish. I highly recommend a Roatan Cruise excursion snorkeling

3. Private Island Tours

There are private islands or keys all around the main island of Roatan.  Some cruise lines actually have private islands that you can enjoy and book directly through the cruise line.  This is a more expensive option for a Honduras shore excursion.

Through Royal Caribbean, we booked Maya Key which is a private island key Roatan cruise excursion. On other cruise lines, you can book Little French Key.  Little French Key was hands down my father-in-law’s favorite Roatan cruise excursion ever!

But you can save money and book a private island tour through Viator on Private Fantasy Island Beach.

All of these are great options.  Do a little price comparison and see what works for you.

Rating : 5 out of 5 stars  Tour Length:  5 hours

Why choose this tour? If you just want to relax Maya Key, Little French Key, or Fantasy Island Beach are the perfect place.  They offer an all-inclusive island experience that includes lunch. The beach is nice and it is a great place to swim and snorkel.

Our Roatan Cruise Excursion Review

We loved going to Maya Key,  The snorkeling was out of this world.  You could bring your own gear but you did have to purchase a life vest to participate.

We walked all around Maya Key.  There is an animal sanctuary, a pool, a nice beach, ancient ruins, and a gift shop on the key.  It is a great place to relax and enjoy Honduras.

4. Monkey and Sloth Tours

Almost all the Honduras cruise shore excursions offer an animal experience.

There are monkeys, sloths, and lots of other exotic animals all over the island of Roatan. Everyone in our group of 22 had an opportunity for an animal encounter.

I enjoyed seeing all the animals but this is more of an “add-on to another tour” option however, you can book an animal encounter singular.

Rating: 5 Stars  Tour Length: 2.5 to 6 depending on your tour.

Why choose these tours?  If you are an animal lover and want to see some exotic animals this is for you.  There are animal encounters included with almost all Roatan cruise excursions.

What Types of Animal Encounters Roatan Cruise Excursions Are Available?

  • Daniel Johnson Monkey and Sloth Sanctuary
  • Roatan Cruise Excursion Monkeys, Sloth and Snorkel Adventure (5 out of 5 Stars)
  • Roatan Excursions: Zipline and Monkeys (5 out of 5 Stars)
  • Private Island Tour and Monkeys
  • Gumbalimba Preservation

I loved walking around and looking at all the animals.  Some animal encounters will let you hold the animals.  I did not want to, I was happy to watch them play in their cages.

There were lots of other animals besides monkeys at the location we went to.  This is a must-do in Honduras!

5. Beach Excursion

Some beaches are better than others in Honduras.

We went to West Bay Taybana Beach.  We knew going into our trip that this beach was going to be very crowded with lots of locals selling products.  It was also dirty!  It isn’t the best beach but it was included on the zip line Roatan cruise excursion we booked.

If you are going to book one of the Honduras shore excursions to the beach just be aware that West Bay Taybana Beach might not live up to your expectations!

What do Roatan Beach Excursions Include?

  • Transportation
  • Beach Chairs
  • Beach Umbrellas

I am going to recommend some of the best Roatan shore excursions for the beach below.  My parents are avid cruisers so they have done pretty much every Honduras excursion.  These are their recommendations.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Tour Length: 3 to 8 hours – these Roatan cruise excursions are flexible. You can stay as little of as long as your want.

Why Choose a Roatan beach excursion?  The beach for the most part is a great place to relax and enjoy the beautiful weather and ocean.  If your kids want to build a sand castle or if you want to swim in the ocean a beach day is perfect!

What Types of Beach Excursions Are Available?

  • Beach Day Pass (Choose your Beach)
  • Roatan Beach Beach at Infinity Resort

6. ATV Roatan Shore Excursions

How does riding ATVs through the jungle sound?  Pretty cool huh! Honduras may be the most affordable location I have ever seen to do this type of tour.

A lot of the ATV Honduras tours include not only an ATV ride but also another activity.  One thing I found is that if you book an ATV Honduras Tour you can get access to Mahagony Bay even if you did not arrive on Carnival, Princess, or Holland America.

What Does an ATV Tour Include?

  • Safety Gear

There are a few tours I will recommend.  Most of them will include other Honduras activities as well.

Rating: 4.5 and 5 out of 5 Tour Length: 1 to 6 hours

Why Choose an ATV Honduras Tour? This is an adventure! Riding ATVs through the jungle is pretty cool.  There are paths all over the island.

We own a few ATVs so we know how fun they are.  If you have never done anything like it before you are going to love it!

What Type of ATV Roatan Cruise Excursions are There?

  • ATV, Zip-Line, Sloth, and Beach Tour
  • ATV and Beach Time
  • ATV and Beach (Cheaper Option)

7. Chocolate and Rum Factory Tour

Chocolate? Rum? Honduras has it all. Actually, you can book a Honduras tour of a few factories.

My father-in-law jumped on this opportunity and had a fantastic time.  On the West End of the Island of Roatan are two factories to tour. You can also take a chocolate-making class.

Rating: 5 out of 5 Tour Length: 3-5 hours

Why Choose This Tour?  If you love chocolate or rum this is a great option.  This is a great tour if zip lining is not calling your name and hanging out at the beach is not very high on your list.  Although you will have the option on this Roatan cruise excursion.

Type of Food Roatan Shore Excursions Are Available?

  • Chocolate Making Class
  • Beach, Chocolate and Rum Tour
  • West Side Roatan Tour with Chocolate Factory

8. Roatan Horseback Riding Tour

Horseback riding on the beach?  I think YES!

If you want to have access to Mahagony Bay you can book a horseback ride on the bay.   They will pick you up from the Town Center (Coxen Hole) Port.

This is the most beautiful part of the island so you are in for a treat!

Rating: 4.5 -5 out of 5 Tour Length: 1-5 hours depending on the tour.

Why Choose This Tour?   I love horseback riding! The prices in Honduras are a lot lower than in the US for horseback riding.  Riding on the beach sounds magical.  I am sold! Next time this will be on my list!

Type of Horseback Riding Honduras Tours

  • Horseback Ride on Mahogany Bay
  • Horseback Ride, Sloth, Beach
  • Horseback Ride in Roatan

9. Catamaran or Boat Rides

You can not go wrong with a Catamaran Honduras cruise excursion. Like, I said earlier Honduras is near the second-largest barrier reef in the World making it a perfect place to explore.

Jumping on a boat and exploring what is under the water is a great idea.  A lot of these Roatan excursions come with food and drinks.  Hanging out on the catamaran is pretty fun!

Rating: 4.5 and 5 out of 5 Tour Length: 3 hours

Why Choose This Roatan Cruise Excursion? You can not go wrong with this option! Exploring the island from the sea is a great way to relax and enjoy your time in Honduras.

Best Excursions in Roatan for Catamarans

  • Catamaran Snorkel Adventure
  • Catamaran Party Boat
  • Catamaran for Cruisers

10. Scuba Roatan Shore Excursions

I know my family was so excited to scuba dive when we booked our cruise.  Royal Caribbean offers PADI certification onboard so when you arrive at the port you can be ready to go scuba dive.

There are lots of levels and options for Roatan cruise excursions for scuba diving in Honduras.

What is Included in a Scuba Diving Roatan Cruise Port Excursion?

  • Diving Equipment

Rating:  5 out of 5 stars Tour Length: 3-4 hours

Why Choose this Scuba Diving Honduras Tour?   Roatan has the best diving in all of Honduras.  There are shipwrecks, coral gardens, and sand flats, and sharks.

It is a perfect place to scuba dive and explore the ocean!

What Scuba Diving Honduras Tours are Available?

  • Beginner Scuba Certification and Dive
  • Certified Divers Cruise Excursion
  • Refresher Scuba Dive Course

Roatan excursions & cruise tours.

Located between the island of Guanaja and the island of Utila is Roatan, the biggest of all the Honduras Bay Islands and known for housing the second-largest coral reef in the entire world. Roatan is a tropical paradise filled with history and incredible wildlife and offers a wide range of exciting excursions and activities for travelers to enjoy. If you're planning a trip to this stunning destination, Shore Excursions Group is your go-to source for discovering more than 50 of the finest excursions and packages available on Roatan Island.

Adrenaline-Packed Adventure

For those looking for a more adrenaline-packed adventure tour, zip-lining through the lush jungles of Roatan is a must. Our Roatan Zip and Splash Beach Break package allows you to soar through the canopy while taking in stunning views of the island's landscape. After the canopy zipline experience, which lasts for 50 to 70 minutes, we'll drive you to the beach, where you can splash in the sea at nearby West Bay. If you're not a fan of heights, there are plenty of other options, such as kayaking, paddle boarding, scuba diving or snorkeling the Blue Channel, and exploring the island's rugged terrain on horseback.

Experience Roatan Culture

If you're interested in learning more about Honduran culture and the history of Roatan, Shore Excursions Group has a variety of options to choose from. You can visit local towns and markets to shop for souvenirs or sample local cuisine or take a tour of the island's key historical landmarks and museums. For chocolate lovers, a visit to Roatan's very own chocolate factory is a must.

The Roatan Island Tour is very popular among cruise ship enthusiasts. This Roatan excursion takes you on a journey through the island's history and culture, visiting the East and West Ends of Roatan. You'll learn about the island's past and see its beautiful views. You'll visit the tourist side of the island, with time to explore and purchase a drink. The excursion ends with a photo stop at a lookout point before returning to the pier in Coxen Hole.

Sensational Water Sports

One of the top excursions that Shore Excursions Group offers is a snorkeling adventure at the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. This is the second-largest reef system in the world and is home to a plethora of marine life. Snorkeling at the reef allows you to witness the stunning underwater world and swim with tropical fish, rays, and even sea turtles. Try our popular Animals and Snorkel combo excursion and experience the aquatic wonders of Roatan.

Relaxing Island Escapes

Our Eco Walk and Beach Break excursion provides many Instagram-worthy opportunities. It includes a relaxing walk through the island's lush jungle, featuring suspension bridges with amazing views, tropical flowers, and wildlife. Catch a glimpse of the endangered yellow-naped parrot, freel-flying scarlet macaws, or adorable spider monkeys and three-toed sloths. The tour lasts about 40 minutes and covers approximately one mile. Then, you will drive to the popular West Bay beach to swim, rent snorkel gear, or spend your beach day relaxing under a palm tree. The excursion offers round-trip transportation with a drive from the cruise pier to the destination and a drive back after the excursion ends.

For those seeking a little R&R, the spa experiences in the jungle are sure to put your mind and body at ease. Our Roatan Resort and Spa package offers a custom 60-minute massage from a spa therapist that includes: a light body brush, oils to exfoliate your skin, botanical body masque, and of course, a full-body massage. Travel to the resort and access to its complimentary amenities are included. There is no shortage of ways to relax on this dreamy Caribbean island.

Roatan Tours Highlights

Curious cruise travelers will delight in the Glass-Bottomed Boat excursions along the coral reef, where you can discover the exquisite marine life that lies beneath the surface. The Mangrove Tour is also perfect for escaping the crowds, traveling to a small, secret canal through a system of mangrove trees on a small boat where you have a chance to discover and meet native people to Roatan still uncontaminated by the modern world today.

In addition to the exciting excursions and packages, Shore Excursions Group provides hassle-free booking and cruise port transportation to and from the excursion sites. Their experienced guides and staff ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable experience, allowing you to focus on making unforgettable memories.

10 Things to do in Mahogany Bay: Roatan Cruise Port

T he island of Roatan is a small island off the coast of Honduras, and it’s home to Mahogany Bay Cruise Port. Boasting stunning beaches, lush jungles, and spectacular coral reefs, Mahogany Bay is known as one of the world’s most beautiful ports of call.

Visitors to Mahogany Bay can experience a variety of activities, from kayaking and snorkeling to exploring the nearby Mayan ruins.

There are also plenty of shopping and dining options nearby, including local souvenir shops, ice cream parlors, and restaurants serving up some of the freshest seafood around.

When you visit Mahogany Bay Cruise Port be sure to take a stroll down the picturesque Mahogany Boardwalk, with its scenic views of the Caribbean Sea and plenty of opportunities to take in all the sights and sounds.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing day at the beach or an exciting adventure in Honduras, Mahogany Bay Cruise Port makes it easy to experience it all.

How to get to Mahogany Bay

Mahogany Bay cruise terminal in Roatan is owned by the Carnival Corporation. They have spent millions of dollars building up this small port to make it one of the most popular ports of call on a western Caribbean cruise itinerary.

The cruise lines that offer itineraries to Mahogany Bay are:

  • Carnival Cruise Line
  • Holland America
  • Princess Cruises
  • Regent Seven Seas
  • Thomson Cruises
  • Costa Cruises

Things to do at the Mahogany Bay Cruise Center

One of the reasons Roatan is such a popular destination for many cruise guests is that you can have a fun day without ever leaving the port area.

When your cruise ship arrives in the port of Roatan, the first thing you will see is the 20-acre welcome center. Here, you can shop for souvenirs, grab some food, or meet with your ship-sponsored Roatan cruise excursions.

1. Free Beach Day

If you are looking for a beach day, you can head to the beautiful Mahogany Bay Beach. This is a man-made beach, but offers a beautiful sandy bay, with white sand and decent snorkeling opportunities.

You can also play beach volleyball and enjoy water activities.

To get to the beach you have a free option and a paid option. The free option is walking along the nature trail to get to the beach.

Once there, you can take advantage of free lounge chairs and beach mats.

2. Ride a Magical Flying Chair

If you are looking for a fun way to get to the beach, be sure and upgrade to ride on a magical flying beach chair.

The Magical Flying Chair is a 10-minute ride that takes you 67 feet in the air above crystal-clear waters, over the treetops, and directly to the white sand beach.

The fee to ride the chair lift is $14 for adults, $8 for kids 4-12, and free for kids under 3. The fee allows a day pass with unlimited rides. Look for the pink building at the welcome center for lift tickets.

* You must be at least 32 inches tall to ride, and there is a 600-pound maximum weight per chair.

Once you are at Mahogany Beach you can relax with a massage.

If you would like to have a more intimate experience, there are 8 exclusive cabanas on a semi-private beach area. You can book these cabanas through the excursion department of your cruise line.

Things To Do From Mahogany Bay, Isla Roatan

If you are like me, the first thing you want to do when visiting a popular port of call is to get the heck away from the cruise terminal!

I love to book with local tour operators whenever possible to explore local restaurants, and local culture, help support the local economy, and really escape the crowds.

Luckily, Roatan is the perfect place to get out and explore! If you book an excursion that is not affiliated with your cruise line it is a good idea to check reviews and do your research.

I use Trip Advisor to check reviews. I also book with companies I trust such as Shore Excursion Group , and Viator .

See Roatan Shore Excursions Here

When you book an excursion in Roatan with one of the local tour companies you’ll need to exit the cruise center to meet up with them.

To do this, walk through the main shopping area and out the gate. You’ll take a short walk down a hill and see all of the tour guides waiting for you.

They are allowed to drop you off in the cruise center though, so after your excursion, you’ll be able to hop right back on your cruise ship or do a bit of shopping.

Hello Sylvia,

Thank you for your comment. There isn’t a designated sea turtle sanctuary on the island. However, Half Moon Bay in West End is a good place to snorkel and possibly see turtles.

Hello Nelli, Yes! Parasailing is available on West Bay Beach and can be included as an add-on to any excursion.

' src=

Roatan is a popular cruise port and vacation destination in Honduras. If you are wondering what to do in Roatan or how to plan a day in Roatan, this guide is for you.

I visited Roatan twice in 2022, on two different 7-night Royal Caribbean western Caribbean cruises . In fact, Roatan was my favorite port! After the first trip, I knew I had to go back which led to me booking the same itinerary for later in the year.

On the first trip, we spent the day on an ATV island tour that had stops at some of the best attractions on the island. On the following trip, we visited an eco reserve and beach club. Both visits were amazing and gave me a great idea of the top things to do in Roatan.

If you are visiting Roatan as a cruise port or a standalone vacation, this guide will explain what to do during your time, where to stay, and other travel tips to make your planning easier.

Some links on this blog are affiliate links, meaning I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you if you make a purchase through them. All opinions are my own, and I only recommend products and services I personally use and believe in. Thanks for your support!

8. Spend the day at one of the best beaches in Roatan

roatan honduras cruise activities

A relaxing beach day is one of the best ways to spend your time in Roatan. The aqua blue Caribbean waters and fine, white sand make it a true tropical oasis.

I recommend taking a taxi to one of the below beaches, renting a beach chair, and spending the day with a drink in hand. You can also spend a half day at the beach and half your day doing another activity on this list.

Some of the best beaches in Roatan are:

  • Little French Key
  • West Bay Beach

We spent a half day at Tabyana beach club at West Bay Beach. The beach club offers great service at your beach chair and a restaurant with good food. In addition, it has some of the best snorkeling on the island.

In fact, some fellow cruisers shared that they take this same cruise itinerary multiple times a year solely to visit this specific beach club for snorkeling. Snorkels can be rented from a vendor at the beach club at an hourly or daily rate.

9. Sloth and Monkey Sanctuary

sloth and monkey sanctuary roatan

The Sloth and Monkey sanctuary near the port is on almost every tour itinerary. The sanctuary allows you to interact with rescued animals and learn all about them.

I am always tentative to recommend animal experiences because it is hard to know if the animals are treated well and if they should be in captivity.

Based on my experience, the animals are cared for, have thoughtful enclosures, and are at the sanctuary due to medical conditions that aren’t compatible with the wild. However, you should do your own research before visiting this location.

10. Chocolate Factory Tour

While chocolate isn’t produced in Roatan, it is very popular in mainland Honduras. There are a few chocolate factories on the island that have tours that explain how chocolate is produced and provide tasting. While many tours include a stop at a chocolate factory, you can easily do this on your own.

The best chocolate factories on the island are :

  • The Roatan Chocolate Factory
  • Mayak Chocolates

11. Chocolate Making Class

⭐️  RATING:  5/5 Stars | ⏳  TOUR LENGTH:   2-3 hours | ✅  Book it!

If you’re a chocolate lover, go one step past visiting a chocolate factory and take this chocolate making class . In this tour, you will learn all about the history of choclate, learn how to make it, and have a chocolate tasting experience.

Following the tour, you will be able to take your homemade chocolate bar home as a super tasty and unique souvenir.

This tour also includes roundtrip transportation from the cruise port.

“We had a WONDERFUL time with Dani in the Chocolate Making class. He is a wealth of knowledge and shared so much with us” – Tracy ( Read more reviews )

Where to Stay in Roatan

If you aren’t visiting Roatan on a cruise, the below resorts are amazing options of where to stay on the island. Both have great beachfront access and pools which are my two priorities when choosing where to stay in a tropical destination.

Grand Roatan Caribbean Resort – The Grand Roatan Caribbean Reso rt is a smaller, boutique hotel with the pool area of a mega-resort. The resort in on one of the whitest sand beaches I’ve ever seen, and they offer snorkeling and other ocean activities on-site. Each room is apartment style with a separate bedroom and kitchen area, making it feel like a home away from home.

Barefoot Cay Resort – The Barefoot Cay Resort is another great hotel in Roatan. The grounds are bright, white, and tranquil. The resort has traditional hotel rooms and oceanfront Villas. The Villas would be the perfect place to stay for a special occasion such as a honeymoon.

How to Get to Roatan

In addition to arriving on a cruise ship, there are two main ways to get to Roatan. The first is flying into the international airport. There are domestic flights from mainland Honduras and even some direct flights from the United States.

If you are visiting Roatan from mainland Honduras, you can opt to take the Galaxy Wave ferry with two daily trips between La Cieba and Roatan. The ferry ride is just over an hour long and costs around $20-$30 per person.

Transportation around the Island

The best way to get around Roatan is by taxi. They are easy to find, safe, and reliable. Before you begin a trip, be sure to agree on a fare or ensure the meter is running.

If you are visiting for more than one day, you can choose to rent a car. However, drivers in Roatan are very aggressive and I would not personally feel safe driving. If you decide to drive, keep an eye out for oncoming traffic passing in your lane.

Quick Facts about Roatan

roatan honduras cruise activities

When to Visit – Roatan has consent temperatures of around 80 degrees all year. Outside of hurricane season, from August to November, Honduras is a great year-round destination.

How Long to Visit – One day in Roatan is enough time to get a taste of the island, but I recommend visiting for a long weekend to allow yourself time to explore. If you aren’t visiting a cruise, you will likely want to spend at least 3full days to make your transit to and from the island worth your time.

Currency – The official currency in Roatan is the Honduras Lempira which is valued at 1 USD = 25 Lempira. However, US dollars are widely accepted.

Language – The official language in Roatan is Spanish, but English is spoked in every tourist site, on tours, and in most stores.
