With Texas being such a large state, there are so many places within Texas to visit! Whether it’s a quick two hour trip to a new place or a more extensive drive, you can still find yourself exploring the many beautiful places Texas has to offer. From historical landmarks, to beautiful waterfalls, to the best food you can find, to amazing architecture, Texas has it all!

Since Texas is centrally located in the United States, there is a plethora of road trip destinations that are close enough to be driven, but far enough to be out of state. The United States has so much to see, and Dallas is a great jumping off point if you’re looking to drive!

Dallas to San Antonio

The Natural Bridge Caverns are about 35 minutes north of San Antonio on Interstate 35. Natural Bridge Caverns  is over two miles of caverns formed one drop of limestone filled water at a time. The first half mile of the caverns is developed for visitors, with the goals of cavern preservation and guest comfort!

About halfway between Dallas and San Antonio is Jacob’s Well Natural Area , 80 acres of wilderness to explore!

Dallas to Austin

Lafayette is known as the happiest city in America ! And it’s true, there are plenty of reasons to smile while you’re visiting this fun and colorful Louisiana city. Arkansas is known as “the natural state” and all of its state parks are outstanding if you’re interested in outdoor activities.

8. Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Louisiana’s Capitol city has come a long way in recent years and has proven to be a great road trip destination. Take an elevator all the way to the top of America’s tallest state Capitol Building which overlooks downtown and the Mississippi River. (Be sure to take the guided tour to see the bullet holes that still exist from when their Governor Huey Long was assassinated!) The old state Capitol is also worth touring – it’s gorgeous! Enjoy some great seafood, see the only real live tiger mascot at Louisiana State University, and tour an old plantation home to learn about early Baton Rouge. If you’re a fan of Cane’s Chicken Fingers – it all started in Baton Rouge and the first location is still open!

Dining options now range from exotic to casual – including one of the best calzones I’ve ever eaten at Bohemian Wood Fire Pizza located downtown. You’ll find plenty of Route 66 history and roadside attractions including The Golden Driller and the Blue Whale of Catoosa – about 15 minutes away. For art lovers, one of the coolest art museums in the south is the Philbrook Museum of Art – housed in the extravagant mansion that once belonged to the founders of Phillip 66. For something a bit unusual, consider a guided tour of Tulsa’s underground tunnel system.

11. Little Rock, Arkansas

Little Rock has a great mix of history, dining, and outdoor adventure! Arkansas’ largest city is surrounded by beautiful scenery and a short drive from outstanding state parks. In the city limits, Little Rock has become one of the most popular foodie hot spots in the south with new restaurants popping up all the time. Visit America’s only purse museum in the South Main neighborhood, or take a stroll along the riverfront and check out loads of fun statues along the way. See the Clinton Presidential Library, tour the State Capitol, learn about science and the human body at the Museum of Discovery, and then grab some fresh produce at Little Rock’s River Market.

KC has some really great museums including the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, the Steamboat Arabia Museum, and the Museum of Toys & Miniatures. Sometimes you just need to be near some water and Galveston is a perfect spot to enjoy some downtime with a view. You can visit one of the city’s unique attractions: The Offshore Drilling Museum, the Galveston Naval Museum, or maybe a enjoy some rides at the historic Pleasure Pier. For lunch or dinner, explore the many Seawall restaurants for award winning food and drinks and something for every taste!

15. Bay St. Louis, Mississippi

Of all the road trips from Dallas, this is the longest one on the list. It’s exactly eight hours from downtown. But, if you’ve never explored Mississippi’s gulf coast, you should add it to your list of road trip ideas. Old Town Bay St. Louis is just east of New Orleans and a good home base to explore the small towns all along the coast up to Biloxi. You’ll find antique stores, diners, art galleries, and yes – the beach! Go out on a boat ride or just relax at one of the local B&B’s in beautiful historic houses. For extra fun – book early and visit during Crusin On The Coast to see hundreds of classic cars line the streets!

16. Carlsbad Caverns National Park – New Mexico

Visit one of the most impressive caves in the U.S. and enjoy a unique weekend getaway. The caverns include over 100 caves and feature gigantic “rooms” covered in rock formations. It’s a chilly 56 degrees all year long – something that sounds good for a summer road trip! There are no hotels in the park however there are plenty of places to stay in nearby Carlsbad or Whites City. Camping is available in the park with a permit.

17. Houston, Texas

If you haven’t been to Houston lately, here’s a refresher on all things you can see and do for a weekend getaway. You can explore the city’s impressive museum district, second only to the Smithsonian in Washington DC. There’s also the Houston Space Center to learn all about NASA and its ties to the region. Houston also has one of the most diverse choices in restaurants in the entire nation. Get around downtown easily with the metro trains and relax in the beautiful 56,000 acre Hermann Park. If you’re into quirky attractions, don’t miss the Beer Can House, a residence covered entirely in beer cans! Houston makes a great weekend trip from Dallas!

18. Roswell, New Mexico

If learning about aliens suits your fancy, maybe Roswell should be on your list. Roswell is one of the longer road trips from Dallas, but a fun family friendly destination. The epicenter for UFOs in New Mexico features museums, gift shops, and tours that all revolve around alien activity that supposedly occurred in the city limits. There is also an aviation museum, a local zoo, and some outdoor recreational opportunities. But, let’s be honest – you’re going here because you want to know if humans are really alone in the universe.

19. New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is near the bottom of our list only because it’s a spot that everyone already enjoys for road trips. Most people enjoy it for drinking and partying – and of course, the food. However, my favorite attraction in New Orleans is the National World War II Museum. It is one of the greatest museums not just in America, but in the entire world. It is truly fantastic. Don’t miss the 4-D film produced by Actor Tom Hanks. The Southern Food & Beverage Museum is another fun stop to learn about cuisine in the south.

20. Waco, Texas

Waco has become a hot spot for a weekend getaway from Dallas in recent years. Largely thanks to the popularity of Chip & JoAnna Gaines who have their mixed use complex based there. But there’s more to explore around Waco than overpriced wash cloths and home decor. Check out the Dr Pepper Museum to learn about America’s first national soft drink which was invented in a Waco pharmacy in the late 1800s. The original bottling plant still stands and houses the museum. You can visit the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame, the Waco Mammoth National Monument, or enjoy a bike ride along the Cottonbelt Trail.

The best part of road trips is the journey, not necessarily the destination– but there are some pretty impressive places that make a road trip that much better. A popular destination is Texas, the Lone Star State. The state is the largest in the United States and is also home to the largest highway system. The expansive state can take hours to drive through and has many popular cities, which makes it the perfect place to go on a road trip . Dallas, a northern city, is a great place to start because it is central to so many popular areas of Texas. The city has an array of distinct neighborhoods and is considered a well-developed metropolitan area, so it is accessible and safe for travelers.

Where To Stop on a Road Trip From Dallas, Texas

Dallas is a northern city and Texas is extremely large, so travelers will most likely want to divide and conquer. So we have compiled a short list of the top attractions that travelers can see on a road trip from Dallas. These stops around Dallas, Texas will take travelers on a southern adventure like no other. From wildflower heaven to historic downtowns, travelers that are taking a road trip around Texas should be sure to check out these iconic cities and their popular sites.

Denton Travelers leaving Dallas on I-35E will arrive in Denton in nearly an hour. Denton is a vibrant city with a great art culture. The city is a historic destination with some of the best music, historic attractions and culinary offerings around. Travelers can explore the area by shopping, visiting some of the top restaurants or even popular breweries. Barley & Board, Hannah’s Off the Square and Cartwright’s Ranch House are some of the most popular places to eat in Denton. There are even historic sites that will excite history buffs. Like the Bayless-Selby House Museum, The Denton County African American Museum and The Denton County Courthouse-on-the Square Museum. The Denton Firefighters Museum, Denton Arts and Jazz Festival and North Texas State Fair are some of the most popular attractions in the area.

Fort Worth From Denton, travelers can get to Fort Worth in about 45 minutes on I-35W S. It is west of Dallas, but south of Denton. Fort Worth is the 12th largest city in the United States. It is located in North Central Texas and is known for its prominence in the Texas Longhorn cattle trade. Some of its top tourism attractions include Fort Worth Zoo, Fort Worth Botanic Garden, The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and the historic district of Fort Worth. The city is rich with culture and has plenty for travelers to do. From restaurants, theaters and museums, Fort Worth is full of engaging activities for tourists. The city is well known for its southern hospitality, so it’s welcoming. Its downtown area is very walkable, so travelers stopping off in the city can stretch their legs for a bit.

Glenrose Glen Rose is the farthest destination from Dallas. It is located southwest of Fort Worth and travelers can take US-67 S for an hour to arrive in this city. It has a small town charm and has impressive natural attractions. Surprisingly, Glen Rose is the dinosaur capital of Texas. It has an array of tracks and fossils imprinted into the soil. Millions of years after the dinosaurs, travelers can observe the legacy of the magnificent creatures. Dinosaur World is an interactive museum that is family friendly.

Nature enthusiasts can also visit the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center. Through self guided exploration or guided excursions, travelers can spot gazelles, zebras, giraffes and cheetahs throughout the scenic area. Travelers that prefer less time consuming excursions can visit the Glen Rose historic downtown area, Big Rocks Park or local food spots like the Loco Coyote Grill.

Ennis Just around an hour and thirty minutes east of Glen Rose, travelers can stop off at Ennis. Ennis is the Official Bluebonnet City and Trail of Texas, so it is an incredible viewing area. Travelers can observe wildflowers and the state flower of Texas in full bloom. The best time to observe the full splendor of the Bluebonnet flowers is March through April.

This small town is notably very peaceful, so travelers can visit for a day trip or even a laid back weekend. For fun, road trip visitors can visit the Big O Speedway, Ennis All Star Bowl or Galaxy Drive-in. The speedway offers track car racing adventures that are sure to thrill. While the All Star Bowl has bowling, laser tag, video games and a sports bar. And the drive-in provides a nostalgic and unique movie experience which would be very convenient for drivers. After exploring Ennis, travelers can drive back North to Dallas (with a short 40 minute drive) for the conclusion of their road trip.

YES, it’s for real! Today, you can walk in dinosaur tracks in the bed of the Paluxy River.

There are other things to do here including going for a hike, picnicking, camping, swimming, fishing, riding your horse, bike, watching for wildlife and visiting the interpretive center.

Please be aware that the Dinosaur tracks are in the riverbed and are not always visible. Contact the park before arrival for current trail status and dinosaur track visibility.

You can walk around Historic Downtown Paris and the town square where you see the Culbertson Fountain and take a tour of the historic Sam Bell Maxey House.

For outdoor enthusiasts, you can enjoy walking, jogging, or cycling at Trail de Paris, a beautiful family-friendly trail just within the city limit. Perfect to add to your list of Day Trips!

Lake Texoma – 1 hour 20m drive

Located between Texas and Oklahoma is Lake Texoma, where you can have a relaxing or an energy-pumping adventure.

You pick your experience, and Lake Texoma will give you what you want especially if you are a nature lover and want to escape on one of many day trips from Dallas.

On the Texas side of the lake, there is Eisenhower State Park , which makes it a great landing point for you and your crew.  If you want to stay in the State of Texas, this is a great option for a day trip in Texas.

This park has everything you need for a day trip from Dallas full of fun, for example, swimming, hiking, horseback riding, fishing, and all the water sports that you can think of for a day trip.

Fort Worth – About an hour from Dallas

There is a saying around these parts that goes like “This ain’t my first rodeo!” but many of us haven’t actually been to a rodeo !

A day trip to Fort Worth is a must for your street-cred when next you bring “out of towner visitors” here.

The historic Fort Worth Stockyards has earned Fort Worth, Texas its nickname, Cowtown, and if you come to Texas for a taste of the Old West, this is your perfect place! A visit to Billy Bob’s is a must if you go.

On your way West to Fort Worth, you could even fit in a tour at the AT&T stadium to see where the Dallas Cowboy’s play.

There are so many things to do in Fort Worth for the whole family but a favorite to mention is the Fort Worth Zoo – which has been named as a top zoo in the nation by Family Life magazine, the Los Angeles Times and USA Today.

Turner Falls in Davis , Oklahoma – 2 hour drive

Head North to Turner Falls Park, known for excellent hiking with beautiful scenery and as the home to Oklahoma’s largest waterfall.

It is open all year long, but in summer this is especially a great spot to cool off from hot summer days.

The park covers 1,500 acres (6.1 km2), which contains miles of trails, caves, and geological features. One of the great features you do not want to miss here is Collings Castle. And, there are campsites and cabin rentals available if you’re going to go for an overnight stay.

There are great campsites at Arbuckle Mountains which is very close by.

If you’re planning to visit this area, we recommend that you also go to the drive-thru safari at the Arbuckle Wilderness Park.

Waco, TX – 2 hour drive

Waco, Texas is the home of Dr. Pepper, and Baylor University, and Magnolia Market has a lot to offer for a day trip.

This small city has become a popular day-trip destination since Chip, and Joanna Gaines started appearing on HGTV’s Fixer Upper.

If you a fan of the show, then that would be one good reason to visit this place. However, there are a lot of other things to do other than visiting the Magnolia Market, and Magnolia Table.

There is the Dr. Pepper Museum, Texas Ranger Museum, Texas Sports Hall of Fame, and Cameron Park Zoo, to name a few.

Tyler, TX – 1 hour 45m drive

Go East on one of your Day Trips From Dallas. The Rose Capital of America and home of the Annual Rose Festival because it has the nation’s most extensive municipal rose garden. Tyler Rose Garden is a 14-acre park filled with the beauty of hundreds of different varieties of roses.

It is worth visiting, and every October is a celebration of its beauty, the annual Rose Festival. 

You can also check out Tyler State Park, a beautiful park for you and your family to enjoy.

There are ample activities for the kids and adults to enjoy like swimming, boating, hiking, camping, etc. 

Jacksonville, TX – 2 hour drive

Jacksonville, Texas, was once known as the Tomato Capital of the World and the town still celebrates its tomato history with a Tomato Fest every second Saturday each June.

So many fun activities, including a tomato eating contest, tomato peeling contest, tomato packing contest, best homegrown tomato contest, salsa contest, etc.  All things tomato! 

Before you get into town, remember to stop by at Loves Lookout off Highway 69, you can take in the view of East Texas. With an elevation of 713 feet, it has long been known for its spectacular views to the east. It is also a perfect place for a picnic or to take a walk with the whole family.   

And, Jacksonville is where the Cherokee Trace Drive-Thru Safari & Wild Animal Park is located. 

You can see a beautiful variety of wildlife and exotic animal at your own pace from the comfort of your own vehicle.

A weekend away might be just what you need to escape the Dallas heat, and fortunately, you have more than a few attractive destinations nearby.

If you have a couple of days to spare for an adventure, you’ll be happy to know that you don’t have to drive too long (traffic permitting, of course) from Dallas to reach an interesting new place to explore. Some are still within Texas while others are just across the borders in neighboring states. With so much to see and do, the hardest part of your weekend road trip from Dallas could very well be deciding which of these awesome places to visit.

Whether you want to check out the sights of a bustling new city or you’re longing to immerse yourself in the great outdoors, these are the best weekend road trips from Dallas for your driving pleasure.

1. Caddo Lake State Park

Get back to nature with a weekend away at Caddo Lake State Park . This park in the Piney Woods region of East Texas is known for its picturesque, swampy landscape, and the best way to explore the twisting bayous is by canoe or kayak (bring your bug spray.) While you’re making your way underneath the moss-covered bald cypress trees, remember that gators are here too, so act appropriately according to alligator safety rules .

Other ways you can fill your time include hiking in the forest and fishing the 26,810-acre lake, which houses more than 70 fish species. Speaking of fishing: You don’t need to have a license if you’re fishing from the shore.

Caddo Lake State Park has 46 campsites, some with just water and some that have full hookups for RVs. You can also rent one of their historic cabins, which were converted from army barracks by the Civilian Conservation Corps.

It’s a straight shot south from Dallas to Austin, the capital of Texas. There, it’s all about keeping things weird (seriously: the city’s slogan is “Keep Austin Weird.”) There’s plenty to do for every type of traveler whether you like live music, art, or kayaking.

If you’re interested in historical and cultural highlights, take a tour at the Texas Capitol , visit one of the city’s many museums like the Bullock Texas State History Museum , or check out the LBJ Presidential Library . If you’re here to party, visit the bars along the famous Sixth Street or Rainey Street. If nature is what you’re after, head up Mount Bonnell, go for a hike along the Greenbelt, or rent a stand-up paddleboard on Lady Bird Lake.

Austin also likes to call itself the “Live Music Capital of the World,” so if you have the time, try catching a show at one of the more than 250 live music venues around the city. If you don’t mind the crowds, try to come during the Austin City Limits Festival for the ultimate long music-focused weekend.

3. Oklahoma City

Who says you have to stay within the state for your road trip from Dallas? In a little more than three hours, you can be in Oklahoma City and see what Oklahoma’s capital has going for it.

During your visit, you may consider checking out the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum , which commemorates the victims, survivors, and rescuers of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. Another worthwhile museum is the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum , which holds an impressive collection of Western and American Indian art and artifacts.

If the weather is nice, make time to see the Myriad Botanical Gardens . Spanning 17 acres, the garden and urban park has a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces, but the one you definitely can’t miss is the 224-foot-long glass tropical conservatory. Another place to enjoy the fresh air is Scissortail Park , a large urban park with pedal boat, kayak, and stand-up paddleboard rentals on its large lake. Oklahoma City is affordable, fun, and under-the-radar – what’s not to like?

Houston is not only the largest city in Texas by population but by area, too. Given its sprawling nature, it’s good to have an idea of what you want to do and see in advance so you don’t spend too much of your time sitting in the city’s famous traffic.

Museum lovers will be in heaven seeing as there are over 150 museums and cultural institutions across the city. Those who want to see the most popular ones can head to the Museum District , where you’ll find the Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Menil Collection, and more.

Another one of Houston’s highlights is Space Center Houston . It’s the official visitor center of NASA and has historic space capsules, a lunar module, rockets, and all-things-out-of-this-world. Kids and adults will love it.

To break up all those indoor attractions, you may also want to see some of Houston’s most beloved urban green spaces. Hermann Park (the Japanese Gardens are especially lovely), Buffalo Bayou Park, and Memorial Park are all nice places to soak up some nature.

5. San Antonio

Keep going on I-35 past Austin and you’ll reach San Antonio, where some of the state’s most popular tourist attractions await (plus lots of delicious tacos.)

If it’s your first time in San Antonio, you can’t miss a trip to the Alamo (the famous 18th-century mission where the phrase (“Remember the Alamo” originated), and the River Walk , a 15-mile walkway along the water with tons of shops, restaurants, and bars. Other gems of the city include the four other Spanish missions that collectively form a National Historical Park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

If you’ve already seen the main sights in San Antonio before, you may just spend the whole weekend riding the roller coasters at Six Flags Fiesta Texas . For another amusement park, there’s SeaWorld , which has roller coasters along with marine life experiences and shows. You can also see what’s new at the San Antonio Museum of Art or grab a drink at the historic Pearl District.

Another weekend destination for a road trip from Dallas is Tulsa, in nearby Oklahoma. One must-see here is the Philbrook Museum of Art , located in a historic villa that was once an oil magnate’s home. Aside from looking at the art indoors, you should also meander through the property’s beautiful 25-acre gardens.

Anyone traveling with kids must pay a visit to Gathering Place . This massive riverfront park offers a variety of fun attractions, including an adventure playground, skate park, boathouse, sports courts, sky garden, nature trail, and more. Even if you don’t have a child, it’s an awesome place to let your inner kid run wild.

For a night on the town, you’ll want to go to the Blue Dome District , a downtown area popular for its many bars and restaurants. Other top attractions in Tulsa include the Gilcrease Museum , Oklahoma Aquarium, and Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame .

This charming town in the middle of the Hill Country is known for its numerous vineyards and tasting rooms. For anyone who doesn’t feel like plotting out their own itinerary (or doesn’t have a designated driver), you can simply hop on one of the wine tour shuttles or walk between tasting rooms .

While wine is all the rage in Fredericksburg, there’s still quite a lot of non-drinkers to enjoy here. You might not have guessed it, but this town is home to the National Museum of the Pacific War (Chester William Nimitz, the Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet during World War II, was born here.) There’s also the Pioneer Museum , where you can learn about the German heritage of the city (it was founded by German immigrants in 1846).

Speaking of German heritage, make sure to try some of the German food around town at spots like Old German Bakery and Restaurant, The Auslander, and Otto’s. Fredericksburg is fairly close to both Austin and San Antonio in case you wanted to combine both into one longer road trip from Dallas.

8. Hot Springs National Park

Cross the state border to Arkansas and you can spend your weekend at Hot Springs National Park . Back in the day, this area was a popular spa town as the thermal springs were said to have medicinal properties. Along the appropriately named Bathhouse Row, you can see historic bathhouse buildings built here between 1892 and 1923. At two of these (Buckstaff Bathhouse and Quapaw Bathhouse) you can still take a dip.

Aside from the springs, you can hike 26 miles of trails, take your bike along the Pullman Trail, or do some bird watching at the Grand Promenade. If you’re here to camp, you’ll want to head to Gulpa Gorge , the park’s official campground. Each site has full hookups, a picnic table, and a pedestal grill. There are no site reservations allowed, so plan accordingly. If you’d rather stay somewhere a bit more luxurious, book a stay at the Hotel Hale on Bathhouse Row.

Use this guide for inspiration for your next locally-based road trip from Cleveland—without needing to stop for gas

Between high gas prices, limited vacation days, and chaotic air travel, taking a local road trip is more appealing than ever this summer. These five destinations are all within 300 miles (round-trip) of Cleveland, Ohio, making them ideal for quick getaways. Spend less time at the pump and more time enjoying the road. 

If you’re in an electric vehicle, we’ve noted whether you can expect to find chargers along each route as well. 

1. Mansfield, Ohio

Total mileage: 160 miles

Ohioans may have differing opinions on whether Mansfield lives up to its official nickname as “The Fun Center of Ohio,” but this centrally-located city offers up several compelling destinations worthy of a day trip or longer. One of its other nicknames, the “Carousel Capital of Ohio,” is easier to prove: The Historic Carrousel District is home to dozens of businesses and shopping opportunities, including Richland Carrousel Park , which features the “first new, hand-carved carrousel to be built and operated in the U.S. since the 1930s.” 

Mansfield is probably best known for being home to the Ohio State Reformatory (OSR), which opened in 1896 and housed 154,000 inmates during its nearly 100 years in operation. Three years after it closed in the early ‘90s, the imposing structure was used as a filming location for the big-screen adaptation of a 1982 Stephen King novella; nearly 30 years after The Shawshank Redemption became a sleeper hit, the OSR offers guided and self-guided tours, overnight ghost hunts, and other events year round.

Don’t miss: Located just down the street from OSR is Biblewalk , a museum featuring displays depicting Bible stories populated by wax figures—some of which have been repurposed from other celebrity-themed museums; The Ohio Bird Sanctuary rehabilitates native birds in a protected natural habitat offering education and birding opportunities; and the Buckeye Express Diner serves up classic eats from inside of a vintage red rail car.

Stay: Overnight at The Paddock Inn Bed & Breakfast , or camp by the water at the Clearfork Marina & Campground . 

Charge: EV chargers are pretty sparse the closer you get to Mansfield, but they can be found at car dealerships and Walmart.

2. Jamestown, New York

Total mileage: 292 miles

Jamestown, New York’s main claim to fame is as the birthplace of Lucille Ball, and today the city attracts fans with several Lucy-themed attractions, including the Lucy Desi Museum , colorful murals, statues, and the Lake View Cemetery , Ball’s final resting place. Jamestown is also home to the National Comedy Center , which features interactive exhibits and memorabilia from comedy greats such as Richard Pryor, George Carlin, and, of course, Ball herself.

Don’t miss: After an afternoon of belly laughs, grab a hot dog and milkshake at the Fifties Grill & Dairy , or enjoy a drink at one of the many restaurants and bars that line the shores of scenic Chautauqua Lake. Visit the Fenton History Center to learn more about Jamestown through artifacts and archival materials, and stretch your legs with a hike at Panama Rocks Scenic Park . 

Stay: Overnight at the Chautauqua Harbor Hotel for great views, or camp at the Chautauqua Lake KOA Holiday .

Charge: There’s an EV charging station at the Lucille Ball Memorial Park, so you can charge while visiting two statues of Ball, including 2009’s infamous “Scary” or “Ugly” Lucy, which was redone (but thankfully not replaced) in 2016.

3. Chester, West Virginia

Total mileage: 218 miles

The northernmost city in West Virginia is located just south of the Ohio River and across from East Liverpool, Ohio, to the north and the Pennsylvania border to the east. Chester is home to the World’s Largest Teapot , which operated as a barrel-shaped ice cream, hot dog, and soft drink stand (this is still “pop” country) until it was refashioned into a teapot and moved to its current location in 1990. 

The tri-state region was once a hub for the pottery and ceramics industry, and collectors can still visit the Fiesta Tableware Company Factory in nearby Newell, West Virginia, to take a factory tour or stock up on seconds and retired colorways at the retail outlet.

Don’t miss: The Pottery City Antique Mall offers several levels of unique, vintage items; the Hilltop Drive-In Theater has been showing movies and selling concessions every summer under the stars since the 1950s; and cross the river on the circa-1905 Newell Toll Bridge , one of the last privately owned toll bridges in the country (prepare to pay $1 round-trip for cars and 5 cents for pedestrians).

Stay: Overnight at the Holiday Inn Express in Newell, or camp at the Tomlinson Run State Park Campground .

Charge: EV chargers are in short supply in this region, so your best bet is to charge along Interstate 80 before you turn onto the more rural Route 11.

4. Canton, Ohio

Total mileage: 120 miles

Located nearly 20 miles south of Akron, Ohio (the cities share a domestic airport and similar post-manufacturing-boom Rust Belt vibe), Canton is home to the Pro Football Hall of Fame due to its status as the birthplace of the National Football League. But whether you’re a fan of sports, American history, or sweet treats, you’ll find something in this underrated Northeast Ohio town. 

Before the NFL, Canton was probably best known as the home of William McKinley, who served as the 25th President of the U.S. until his 1901 assassination in Buffalo, New York. Today, the William McKinley Presidential Library and Museum is located in Canton, and McKinley himself is interred in the nearby McKinley National Monument . There’s also the First Ladies National Historic Site —comprising the Ida Saxton McKinley Historic Home and an Education and Research Center—which was established in 2000.

Don’t miss: Take a break on the drive south to stretch your legs at Cuyahoga Valley National Park , one of the only national parks in the northeastern U.S.; visit the remnants of Mother Goose Land , a former storybook park; and satisfy your sweet tooth at Chubby’s Treats , where soft serve is served from an ice-cream-shaped building, or Milk and Honey , a locally-owned diner and ice cream shop that transports you back to the 1940s.

Stay: Overnight at the Poggio Amorelli Bed and Breakfast , or camp at Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Akron Canton .

Charge: There are several chargers located near the Akron-Canton Airport and one located close to the Pro Football Hall of Fame so you can charge while you explore the museum.

5. Sandusky, Ohio

Total mileage: 126 miles

Roller coaster enthusiasts will find no shortage of thrill rides at Cedar Point , the crown jewel of Sandusky, Ohio. Located on an island in Lake Erie, Cedar Point offers enough rides (more than 70, including 18 world-class roller coasters), live shows, and amusements to keep the whole family busy for days. But the area is also full of opportunities to explore the scenic lakeshore, other quaint island communities, parks, and historic attractions, including Put-in-Bay and Kelleys Island. 

Don’t miss: Take a tour of Thomas Edison’s birthplace in Milan, Ohio; see the Marblehead Lighthouse , one of Lake Erie’s most-photographed landmarks; and get up close and personal with more than 200 animals at the Lagoon Deer Park , including deer, llamas, goats, peacocks, elk, emu, and miniature donkeys.

Stay: Overnight at the Put-in-Bay Resort or camp at Kelleys Island State Park .

Charge: EV chargers are located at Meijer grocery stores and several hotel chains along the route.

Why you should visit Texas

Big skies and bigger parks. Barbecue and Tex-Mex food (don’t miss the breakfast tacos). A vibrant live music scene in   Austin and world-class birding in South Texas. Plus, cowboys .

Best time to visit Texas

Spring:   March and April bring colorful wildflowers (indigo-hued bluebonnets , red-and-yellow Indian blankets) to the highways and backroads in Central Texas. In Austin,   the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center has 284 acres of native plants inspired by the   Texas-born first lady . Outdoor festivals crowd the calendar. Austin’s South by Southwest Festival offers films and concerts each March; San Antonio ’s ebullient Fiesta   celebrates the city’s Hispanic heritage with parades, a stuff-your-face food festival , and concerts in April. And midway between Austin and Houston , the March Round Top Antiques Fair fills tents, barns, and hayfields with French furniture, vintage cowboy boots, and more.

Summer:   Y’all, it’s hot, with temperatures often soaring above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Beat the heat at one of the state’s Gulf of Mexico beaches , including South Padre Island , where you can watch hatchling releases of baby Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles . Or do as the locals do and go tubing in the Guadalupe River near New Braunfels or in the Frio River in Garner State Park .

Autumn:   Cooler temps lure Texans outdoors to events such as the Austin City Limits Music Festival , with bands in Zilker Park,   or the State Fair of Texas   in Dallas where you can eat a corn dog and wave to Big Tex ,   the 55-foot-tall animatronic greeter.   Lost Maples State Natural Area ,   northwest of San Antonio, has the state’s best fall colors. Celebrate New Braunfels ’ German heritage at Wurstfest .

Winter:   Mild weather makes outdoor activities pleasant around the holidays. In San Antonio, stroll the Riverwalk, where the bald cypress trees are draped with twinkling lights. Amid the Victorian downtown of Galveston , Dickens on the Strand brings costumed revelers and roving musicians.  

Four of America’s largest cities are in Texas.

In the south, San Antonio was once a part of Spain and later Mexico, a history that shows up at the Alamo and the San Antonio Missions . Houston has high culture (art museums, the acclaimed Alley Theatre ) and the NASA Johnson Space Center , where tram tours take in Mission Control and other sites.  

Sister cities Dallas and Fort Worth are just 30 miles apart in North Texas. In “Big D,” catch home games from the Dallas Cowboys football team or hear live music in funky Deep Ellum . A good art museum scene and cowboy culture rule in neighboring Fort Worth, where hatted herders lead longhorn cattle through the Stockyards District every day.

The capital city of Austin is known for live music, barbecue, and Barton Springs Pool , a natural, spring-fed watering hole and the soul of the city.

In the Rio Grande Valley,   an agricultural region bordering Mexico, there are cities such as McAllen and Brownsville plus the varied wildlife habitats (wetlands, thorn forests) of the World Birding Center .

In West Texas, El Paso   offers Tex-Mex bordertown culture amid the stark beauty of the Chihuahuan Desert and the foothills of the Franklin Mountains , best explored via mountain bike or hiking trails.

Parks and smaller cities

The Hill Country

The rolling terrain of the Hill Country in Central Texas is home to Fredericksburg , with its throwback main street full of indie boutiques and German restaurants plus 60-plus wineries in and around town. You’ll also find cowboy culture in Bandera and the beer-drinking enclave made famous in Waylon Jennings’   song “ Luckenbach , Texas .”

The Big Bend  

Two of the state’s largest parks— Big Bend National Park and the adjacent Big Bend Ranch State Park —lure hikers, bikers, and campers to the desert and mountain landscapes of West Texas. Stargaze at the University of Texas’ McDonald Observatory in Fort Davis, or check out the Donald Judd art installations in funky Marfa .  

Texas Coast  

The longest barrier island in the world, Padre Island stretches for 113 miles from the tip of South Texas to Corpus Christi .   Farther north, Galveston Island is the birthplace of Juneteenth and home to Victorian mansions.  

Panhandle  

Palo Duro Canyon , the second largest canyon in the U.S. and a state park, carves through the Panhandle for 120 miles.  

Getting in and around Texas

By plane: Dallas-Fort Worth International, George Bush Intercontinental in Houston, and Austin-Bergstrom International offer domestic and international service; San Antonio International serves Mexico and other cities in the U.S.

By bus: Vonlane   and RedCoach   have luxury bus service between Austin, Dallas/Forth Worth, Houston, and San Antonio. Valley Metro serves the Rio Grande Valley.

By train: Amtrak operates two train routes through Texas—the Texas Eagle   and Sunset Limited .

By car: Texas is easily accessible via major interstates including I-10, I-20, I-35, I-45, and I-37. One of the most scenic drives is FM 170, or the River Road, which hugs the Rio Grande and cuts through Big Bend Ranch State Park between Presidio and Lajitas.

In town: Major cities including Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and El Paso have bus service and bike share systems. DART rail in Dallas serves 65 stations. Austin’s CapMetro rail operates a single line from downtown to the northern suburbs. Houston’s three METRORail   lines connect tourist destinations. The Streetcar in El Paso loops through uptown and downtown.

Know before you go

Cultural history: Native Americans have occupied Texas for more than 14,000 years. Coastal tribes like the Karankawa were semi-nomadic, the Caddos in East Texas and Jumanos in the West farmed and traded. Comanches and Apaches hunted bison and raided villages in the north and west. Enslaved Africans helped the Spanish settle parts of Texas in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The flags of France, Spain, and Mexico once flew over the state, which declared its independence from Mexico in 1836 and joined the U.S in 1846. Texas seceded from the Union and joined the Confederate States of America in 1861. The end of enslavement was announced in Galveston at the end of the Civil War, leading to the Juneteenth holiday .   Immigrants from around the world, including Germany and Czechia,   arrived during the 18th   and 19th centuries, making their marks on places such as New Braunfels, Fredericksburg, and Kerrville .

LGBTQ+ : Texas ranked 27th in a 2020 24/7 Wall St. report of the most LGBTQ+-friendly states in the U.S. Despite Texas’ conservative politics, cities such as Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, and San Antonio get high marks on the Human Rights Campaign 2022 Municipal Equality Index scorecard.

How to visit Texas sustainably

Help preserve habitat by sticking to designated trails and roads. Support businesses that promote dark night skies. It’s legal to drive on public beaches, but watch for wildlife, including nesting sea turtles, and use reef-safe sunscreen. The Love Fredericksburg and Port A Way stewardship   campaigns encourage visitors to keep an eye out for wildlife and pick up litter. Look for LEED-certified hotels and restaurants committed to selling locally grown food.

What to read  

Empire of the Summer Moon , by S.C. Gwynne. This sweeping historic account follows four decades of fighting with the Comanches, Spanish colonialism, the decimation of the American bison and the arrival of railroads.

Forget the Alamo ,   by Bryan Burrough, Chris Tomlinson and Jason Stanford. The myths surrounding the Texas “cradle of liberty” get debunked and explored in this fascinating look at the evolution of the Lone Star State, its legends, and its prejudices. Valley of Shadows ,   by Rudy Ruiz. In this novel set in 19th-century West Texas, tensions along the Mexican border bubble up in dramatic, dark style—with a dash of magical realism.

These 5 road trips will show you the best of Spain

Explore  Spain ’s world-famous natural scenery and cultural heritage – and savor its acclaimed cuisine at every pit stop – with a road trip across this beautiful country.

Wherever you head, you can count on passing medieval castles and ancient cities, charming seaside towns, towering mountain ranges and coastlines that stretch for miles. In between the memorable monuments, Spain’s  pueblos (villages) offer the chance to recharge with traditional tapas (small plates) among warm locals.

Get into gear with these five outstanding driving routes, which will show you some of the best parts of Spain.

1. Costa Brava road trip

Best road trip for Catalonian history and cuisine – and all things Dalí Barcelona – Cadaqués; approx 246km (153 miles); allow 3-4 days

Spain is blessed with over 3000 miles of coastline, and one of its most spectacular stretches is the Costa Brava , along the Mediterranean on the northeastern coast of  Catalonia . This drive will reward you with long, sunlit beaches; historic cities; and picturesque fishing villages that inspired the region’s most famous artist, Salvador Dalí. 

Starting in  Barcelona , take the GI-682 road from Tossa de Mar to Sant Feliu de Guíxols, where there are designated viewpoints to stop and gawk at the spectacular scenery. Detour from the coastline for a pit stop at the ancient city of Girona  to take in its  iconic cathedral  (which has one of the widest Gothic naves in the world), and the archaeological treasures at Banys Àrabs (Arab Baths).

Art lovers will not want to miss the famous “Dalinian Triangle”  (formed by the municipalities of Figueres, Portlligat and Púbol), where you can immerse yourself in Salvador Dalí's outlandish world by visiting his former residences, now open to the public.

The road trip ends at the quaint seaside town of Cadaqués on the bay of the Cap de Creus peninsula. This was a favorite summer playground of iconic artists and writers, including Dalí, Pablo Picasso, Daphne Guinness, Man Ray, Frederico Garcia Lorca, Melina Mercouri and Marcel Duchamp, among many others. And now you.

Planning tip:  Girona’s  El Celler de Can Roca has been named the world’s best restaurant numerous times over the years, and it takes bookings up to a year ahead. So what are you waiting for? Get those reservations in now. 

2. Andalucía road trip

Best road trip for getting close to Spain’s Moorish past Malaga– Seville; 471km (293 miles), allow 5 days

Southern  Andalucía  is the only European region that has both Mediterranean and Atlantic coastlines, linked by the Strait of Gibraltar. A drive through this fascinating region takes you along the justly popular  Costa del Sol .

Start in the sunlit coastal city of Málaga , and enjoy stunning views of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Head inland for the enchanting cities of Granada and Córdoba , where the imprint of the Muslim dynasties that ruled Spain until the 15th century is palpable.

No visit to Granada is complete without stopping at the  Alhambra , the ancient palace and citadel of the Nasrid Dynasty, which gloriously blends Moorish and Christian decorative styles. The same entrance ticket will get you into the nearby Palacio de Generalife , a summer palace for the Nasrid sultans. 

Córdoba is a captivating city that is home to the La Mezquita–Catedral de Córdoba (the Córdoba Mosque), the city’s shining jewel which, alongside the Alhambra, represents the apex of Islamic architecture in Spain. 

A 90-minute drive from Córdoba, the Andalusian capital of Seville offers an idiosyncratic and dreamy mix of horse-drawn carriages, citrus trees, a colossal Gothic cathedral , Mudéjar (Moorish) architecture and flamenco tablaos (flamenco performances). 

3. Northern Spain road trip

Best road trip for greenery and cuisine along Spain’s Atlantic coast San Sebastián – Santiago de Compostela; 750km (466 miles), allow 6–7 days

Because the north of Spain sees more rainfall than the rest of the country, its landscapes tend toward the verdant; on the road, you’ll be treated to a visual feast of lush hillsides, snow-capped mountain peaks and Atlantic Ocean views. This itinerary will take you across four autonomous communities of Spain, departing from the Basque Country , crossing Cantabria  and  Asturias , then ending in Galicia . 

A great jumping-off point is the gastronomic coastal city of San Sebastián, which has the greatest concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants per square meter in Europe. It would be ideal to spend a day or two here to explore the city’s Parte Vieja (Old Quarter), and savor the endless array of pintxos (appetizers) that tempt you at every turn. 

Not too far away is the Basque islet of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe , which has become world-famous as the filming location for Dragonstone in  Game of Thrones . This breathtaking rocky precipice juts out into the Bay of Biscay, and is connected to the mainland by a long, winding stone staircase. Crowning the islet is a small chapel with a bell at its facade: tradition calls for visitors to ring the bell three times and make a wish.

Stretch out your legs on the spectacular golden sand beach, Playa del Sardinero , in the port town and Cantabrian capital of Santander . The whimsical oceanfront Magdalena Palace  was built in the early 1900s as a summer residence for the royal family. 

You’ll enjoy dramatic views of the Picos de Europa mountain range as you drive onward into Asturias. Stop by Oviedo  to explore the charming old town and try the traditional fabada asturiana bean stew. Finally, join pilgrims from all over the world at  Santiago de Compostela , the final destination of the thousand-year-old pilgrimage of the Camino de Santiago (Way of St James), where you could visit the Basilica of Santiago de Compostela , the reputed final resting place of St James the Apostle. Luckily, you won’t be tired from walking there.

Planning tip:  Most car-rental firms will gladly throw in a silla infantil (car seat) for an additional cost. You should always book these in advance, especially around holidays like Christmas and Holy Week (when finding a car to rent itself can be a challenge).

4. Castilla y León road trip

Best road trip for towns filled with medieval castles, churches and charm Madrid – Salamanca; 265km (165 miles), allow 2 days

This itinerary through central Spain takes you across plateaus with the dramatic backdrop of the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range and into some of Spain’s most outstanding historic towns in the Castilla y León region. Look forward to walled medieval cities, fortified castles, Romanesque architecture, Gothic cathedrals and UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Just over an hour away from Madrid , your starting point, lies  Segovia , famous for its magnificent Roman aqueduct , Gothic cathedral and the 12th-century Alcázar of Segovia castle.

The next stop is the medieval-era walled town of Ávila , “the town of stones and saints,” known for having the most Gothic and Romanesque churches in Spain (and that’s saying something!). Spend a day walking its cobblestone streets and visiting the El Salvador Cathedral , San Vicente Basilica and the Convent/Museum of St Teresa , perhaps the town’s most famous native.

End your road trip in the charming university town of Salamanca , known as “La Cuidad de Oro” (Golden City), since its honey-colored sandstone walls glow with infinite golden hues in the late afternoon light.

Local tip:  Castilla y León is hot and sunny in summer – but winters can get cold. The climate is relatively dry, even in the cold months, which means it doesn’t snow very often – but temperatures can drop below zero overnight. Pack for proper winter weather.

5. Ibiza road trip

Best road trip for coves and beaches Ibiza Town – Cala d’Hort; 35km (22 miles), allow 1–2 days

Renting a car in Ibiza is the best way to explore the island’s stunning calas  (or coves): having your own wheels will save you both time and expensive taxi fares. While the island has a reputation as a 24/7 party destination, its timeless allure lies more in its natural attractions: think rugged cliffs, turquoise-colored waters and ancient archaeological sites.

Starting from Ibiza Town , drive over to Ses Salines beach at the southern tip of the island (only about 10 minutes away) to get a taste of glamorous beach life. It’s not uncommon to spot celebrities soaking up the sun or enjoying cocktails in one of the many beachside bars and restaurants. 

A fascinating contrast awaits at Sa Caleta  (Es Bol Nou), a more secluded beach tucked between rugged red cliffs. Take some time to hike up the ancient Phoenician civilization World Heritage site of Sa Caleta ruins, and pause for some fresh seafood at the cala ’s restaurant, with its shady Mediterranean garden bar. 

End your drive at Ibiza’s emblematic Cala d’Hort , featuring the mythical Es Vedrà island, which rises 382m (1253ft) from the glittering Mediterranean waters. Everything from UFOs to the Virgin Mary have reportedly been seen on this island, giving it its legendary status. While it’s a spellbinding sight at any time of the day, viewing it for the first time at sunset is an almost transcendent experience.
