Ricky Gervais's Armageddon breaks stand-up comedy record
Comedian Ricky Gervais is at the top of his game after earning an impressive record title with one of his stand-up performances.
The star, who is also behind hit BBC TV show The Office and Netflix's After Life, has several successes under his belt, but now he can add his very own world record to the list.
The latest show from the widely talked-about British comedian, Armageddon (currently in full swing and touring arenas worldwide), has smashed the record for the highest gross for a single stand-up performance EVER.
Although the tour has been filling up arenas across the globe, it racked up an impressive total of £1,410,000 ($1,790,206.50) for Ricky’s date at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, California, on 6 May 2023.
The Californian date made history, as Ricky delivered his performance to a jam-packed amphitheatre – as he continued to take his successful new tour around the globe.
Crowning a flourishing career, either on a screen or filling up arenas, the comedian can now add a Guinness World Records title to his (always growing) list of accolades.
As if packing out The Hollywood Bowl wasn’t enough, now Guinness World Records wants to put me in their big book. What a year! - Ricky Gervais
“Ricky Gervais is Britain’s biggest comedian. He sells out arenas around the world,” said Ian Coburn, Live Nation.
Ricky will continue to tour Armageddon throughout the remainder of 2023, with three shows at London’s OVO Wembley Arena (6 Oct, 20 Oct, 13 Dec) and 11 nights at the London Palladium (13 – 16 Sept, 28 – 30 Sept, 11 – 14 Oct).
Netflix have already bought the rights to Armageddon, which will air following the end of the tour - allowing those who miss the live show to stream it as Ricky’s next Netflix special.
In May 2022, his previous special SuperNature landed on Netflix, becoming one of the most-watched comedy specials that year.
A few years before, in 2018, the influential comedian had released Humanity, his first stand-up special in seven years.
Considered one of the most influential British comedians, Ricky is also the mind behind the hugely popular TV sitcom The Office.
The mockumentary became iconic thanks to its humour and (more recently) viral clips, and was first broadcast in the United Kingdom on BBC Two, with the first episode airing in July 2001.
For The Office, Ricky worked both in front of and behind the camera – taking the reins of the direction and scriptwriting of the programme (alongside Stephen Merchant) while also starring as general manager David Brent.
Across two series and 14 episodes, the series followed the day-to-day lives and struggles of the employees that work in the Slough branch of Wernham Hogg, a fictional paper company.
The TV success has seen the show aired in more than 90 countries and has had a whopping 12 remakes.
In particular, the NBC-produced American remake, starring Steve Carrell, ran for 109 episodes and nine series.
Thanks to its sharp, real-life humour and engaging characters, masterfully tiptoeing the fine line between relatable and absurd, funny and realistic, the show became a comedy staple and is considered one of the most successful US remakes of a British show in more than 30 years.
Versatile and multi-talented, the comedian has ventured into several different creative disciplines, from scriptwriting, directing and acting, to music and podcasts.
Demonstrating once again his capability to thrive in different roles, he also wrote, produced and played the lead in Netflix’s dark comedy After Life.
The acclaimed show premiered on 8 March 2019, running for a total of three series and 18 episodes.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ricky Gervais (@rickygervais)
The comedian has won three Golden Globes, two Primetime Emmys and seven BAFTAs across his various projects.
When he’s not in front of the camera, Ricky is entertaining live audiences and filling up arenas with his stand-up comedy gigs. Receiving the Charlie Chaplin Britannia Award for Excellence in Comedy 2016 BAFTA/LA, he has been out on seven international tours to date: Animals, Politics, Fame, Science, Humanity, SuperNature .
Last but not least, he is currently out on the road with his most recent, record-breaking show Armageddon.
We can’t wait to see what records Ricky Gervais will break next, as we are sure his talent and fame will keep filling up arenas worldwide.

Gervais performed a number of Armageddon warm-up shows last year. Back in June, he joked that he had reported his fans “for hate crimes” for laughing at this new material.
“Another amazing audience at @lsqtheatre for my #Armageddon new material night,” Gervais wrote on Twitter. They laughed at things that shouldn’t be laughed at and I have reported them all for hate crimes. I’ll do more soon.”
Earlier this year, Gervais faced criticism over “transphobic” jokes in his Netflix special SuperNature . After the special was released, the comedian defended making “taboo” jokes , saying comedy is for “getting us over taboo subjects so they’re not scary anymore”.

Ricky Gervais: Armageddon review – smug, macho, playground bants
Apollo, Manchester There’s ample room in comedy to tease at woke over-earnestness but this weak and boorish set fails to engage
R icky Gervais gives us a little lecture after curtain call tonight about taking offence. Laughter is always good; no one’s getting hurt – that kind of thing. But, not for the first time, it’s a specious argument, setting up various straw men to represent those of us who might demur from his boorish comedy. I’m not suggesting his jokes about “dwarves”, “disabled creatures” and all the age-old targets of abuse will lead directly to hate crimes. I am suggesting they’re operating to a comic standard more associated with the playground than the standup stage.
It’s all a bit sad. Gervais is a clever chap, and a compassionate one, towards animals at least. But he’s convinced himself that anti-woke is a rebellious pose to strike – then convinced himself again that juvenile bants represents the best way to stage that rebellion. And so for punchlines we get African babies with Aids, sweatshop children whose mums get raped, and Gervais’s fictional limbless son being called “you little fucking grub”. If we don’t laugh, we’re “fragile” and “scared of words” – which Gervais paints here as a betrayal of millennia of “survival of the fittest” human evolution.
Cue the ostensible point of Armageddon: to imagine how it all might end for our “one species of narcissistic ape”. Gervais considers that prospect with equanimity: no lover of humanity he. But the theme is secondary to his battery of crude gags about immigrants, homelessness and, ho hum, Chinese people eating dogs. Throw in a few gags about his penis size from the 61-year-old, and the descent from the salad days of The Office is near-complete.
The shame is that there’s ample room in comedy to tease at woke over-earnestness and the contradictions of modern political correctness. With his jokes about the overuse of the word “fascist”, say, or a devious one about so-called cultural appropriation, Gervais shows how good he could be if Armageddon’s spirit were curious and engaged rather than macho and smug. He promises, tongue firmly in cheek, to find a justification for the worst jokes here before taping for Netflix. Might I suggest simply writing better ones?
At Manchester Apollo on 7 December. Then touring until 15 December.

Ricky Gervais has broken yet another record for his Armageddon comedy tour
'there’s a weight of intellect behind my comedy, yeah'.
Dominic Smithers
Ricky Gervais' Armageddon tour has broken yet another record.
The creator of The Office has spent the best part of the last year travelling the world, sharing his unique take on modern life with audiences far and wide:
And it'll come as no surprise to anyone that people have absolutely loved it.
Selling out shows wherever he's been, Gervais has performed to absolutely massive audiences.
Earlier this year, the former XFM presenter officially made it into the Guinness Book of Records following his show at The Hollywood Bowl, which raked in over $1.75 million (£1.41m). Not bad for a night's work, eh?
"Thank you Hollywood Bowl for one of the most surreal nights of my life," he said at the time. "What a venue. What a crowd."
Gervais continued: "I can’t even imagine what my mum would think about me playing the Hollywood Bowl.
"I hope she would be horrified by the language, tell me I looked fat, and be secretly proud."
Speaking previously about his entry into the iconic book, Gervais said it would have been a huge source of pride for his late mum.
"When I was little, I'd get the the Guinness Book of Records for Xmas every year," he wrote on social media.
"The whole family would read it. I think my mum would be prouder of me being in this book than anything else I've done."
But never one to rest on his laurels, Gervais recently added to that impressive accolade when he sold out his show at Toronto’s 20,000 capacity Scotiabank Arena on 10 August, the biggest of any British comic in Canada.
Speaking to LADbible about the latest feat, he said: "I think Armageddon is my favourite tour so far.
"To break the world record at the Hollywood Bowl was surreal, but breaking the record for Canada was very special too as I’m half Canadian. Why else would I have a daft surname like Gervais?"
And if he wasn't rolling in it already, Ricky's worldwide tour has so far made an incredible $32m (£26.4m) along the way, which isn't too shabby... just as long as some of that cash gets spent on his cat.
The tour is set for its final date at Wembley Arena in London on 13 December, ahead of the release of his next Netflix special.
So those of us who didn't manage to get tickets for one of his gigs can at least pretend we were there, right?

Dominic Smithers is LADbible's Editorial Lead. After graduating from the University of Leeds with a degree in French and History, he went on to write for the Manchester Evening News, the Accrington Observer and the Macclesfield Express. So as you can imagine, he’s spent many a night wondering just how useful that second language has been. But c'est la vie.
