Table of Contents

Buying guide for best portable nebulizers.

Anyone who suffers from a disease or condition that affects the lungs knows how important it is to always be prepared. You could place your head down for a good night's sleep while on vacation only to wake up gasping for air because something triggered an asthma attack. A portable nebulizer can help provide the security that allows you to live a full and fearless life.

A portable nebulizer should be lightweight and easy to operate. It must come with the proper size mask (adult or child) if the unit doesn’t use a mouthpiece. Ideally, you want to get several treatments out of each charge if your portable nebulizer uses batteries. Having a car adapter or a USB charger is also highly recommended.

Key considerations

How does a nebulizer work.

The best (and fastest) way to treat medical conditions involving the lungs, such as asthma, emphysema, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy, COPD, or bronchitis, is to distribute the medicine directly into your lungs. To do that, you must be able to breathe in your doctor-prescribed medicine as a fine mist that won’t further irritate your airways. A nebulizer makes this happen in much the same way that a humidifier adds moisture to the air.

To deliver emergency medication, an inhaler is equally effective and may be easier to use since they require no setup to use. Talk to your healthcare provider to decide which type of device will work best for you.

There are two general types of portable nebulizers: atomizing and ultrasonic.

Atomizing: This type of nebulizer works by hitting the medicine with a small, focused jet of air that converts it into very fine droplets, making it breathable. These units are louder than ultrasonic models, and they deliver the medication more slowly, requiring longer treatment sessions. If this is a rescue treatment, that might not be a positive. However, an important part of a maintenance treatment for many of these diseases is the breathing itself, so a longer treatment session could be more beneficial in some instances.

Ultrasonic: This type of nebulizer uses high-frequency vibrations to turn the medicine into a breathable mist. Since it doesn’t use a compressor, it runs more quietly and works more quickly than atomizing nebulizers. It’s also smaller and more readily transportable, and it can offer several treatments per charge. Depending on the model, an ultrasonic nebulizer can require considerably more diligence when it comes to cleaning.

Who needs a portable nebulizer?

A breathing treatment with a nebulizer is often done for preventive maintenance. In this instance, you’ll know in advance when your next scheduled treatment should occur. If you’re on vacation , for instance, having a portable nebulizer is an easier, more convenient travel option. However, a portable nebulizer can also be used in place of a rescue inhaler. An asthma attack could happen when you’re not at home or near your doctor's office. In that situation, it’s essential to have a portable nebulizer because it could save your life. The smallest portable nebulizer can fit in the palm of your hand, making it easy to take anywhere, even camping, where there might not be any electricity for days.

Portable nebulizer features

After you've decided which type of nebulizer you prefer, there are a few other aspects to consider. Most of these are based on preference, but a few could be deal breakers depending on your situation.

Accessories

The items that come with your portable nebulizer can be instrumental in helping you determine which model to purchase. These items might include a child mask, adult mask, mouthpiece, additional air filters, travel bag, and USB adapter. If there is an accessory you need in a portable nebulizer, check to be sure the one you’re considering has it.

Noise level

Although this mostly depends on the type of portable nebulizer you purchase, if the noise level is a factor, check product descriptions and online user reviews.

Portable doesn't always mean small or compact; it just denotes a unit that can travel with you. If you’re interested in a handheld, lightweight, ultrasonic portable nebulizer, that is very different than a portable compressor model, which is considerably larger and would not fit in a purse.

Power and charging options

Portable nebulizers can be powered and charged in a number of ways. If you prefer charging through a USB port, for instance, make sure that the model you’re considering has this capability.

Dishwasher safe

Some portable nebulizers have a mouthpiece and masks that can be cleaned in the top shelf of a dishwasher . If this is your preferred method of cleaning, look for a dishwasher-safe portable nebulizer. Note that only the parts mentioned can be cleaned this way, not the tubing or the compressor.

It can be difficult if not impossible to get kids to sit still for an entire breathing treatment, especially one that lasts over ten minutes. If this is the case, having a portable nebulizer in the shape of a dog, panda, or elephant might be an option you want to consider.

Portable nebulizer prices

The price for portable nebulizers is remarkably consistent.

Inexpensive

For around $30 to $35, you can get a compact, travel-size unit that comes with an adult mask and a child mask. These portable nebulizers are handheld devices that feature a rechargeable battery.

In the $40 to $50 range, you have your choice of everything. You can get a portable nebulizer with a compressor or one in the shape of an animal. The compressor units are larger, and some have a compartment that houses the parts when not in use.

There is a price jump after $50. For $100 or more, you can get portable nebulizer kits that include a travel bag and additional accessories, such as multiple masks and mouthpieces, along with a variety of charging connections. Unless you have very specific needs that can only be addressed by one of these bundles, the $40 to $50 range is where you want to focus your attention.

If you suffer from a condition or disease that affects your ability to breathe, it’s crucial that you get the most out of each and every treatment. Following are a few tips to help you do just that.

  • Wash your hands. Before touching your portable nebulizer or adding medicine, make sure you have clean hands.
  • Inspect all parts of your machine. Make sure there are no cracks in the mask or the tube and the unit is not damaged in any way.
  • Add the medicine. Remove the nebulizer cup lid, add the contents of the premeasured medicine vial to the cup, and replace the lid. Note that the medicine used in your nebulizer must be prescribed by your physician and is not included with your portable nebulizer.
  • Fasten the mouthpiece or mask to the nebulizer. If your unit has tubing, be sure it’s securely attached to both the compressor and the nebulizer cup.
  • Use your portable nebulizer. Turn on the machine. You should see a mist coming out of the mouthpiece or mask. Sit in a chair with your back straight, and place the mouthpiece in your mouth or the mask over your face. Breathe slowly and as deeply as possible. If you can, hold the medicine in for a few seconds before exhaling to allow it to settle in your airways. Continue breathing this way until all the medicine is gone. If you begin to feel dizzy, pause the treatment for a few minutes until you feel better and then resume.

portable travel nebulizer machine

Q. Are there any side effects from using a portable nebulizer?

A. The nebulizer is just a delivery system. Most of the potential side effects would come from the medication. To learn the possible side effects of the medicine that you’re taking, talk to your pharmacist. Deep breathing when you have a disease such as asthma can trigger bouts of coughing that might lead to vomiting. Additionally, breathing deeply for a prolonged period of time can make an individual lightheaded and/or hoarse.

Q. How often can I use a nebulizer?

A. Just because you can carry a portable nebulizer with you wherever you go that doesn't mean you can use it whenever you want. Usage directions, which include frequency, will come with your nebulizer medicine. If you require treatments more frequently than recommended, talk to your doctor. Overdosing on substances such as albuterol can be fatal.

Q. Is a portable nebulizer covered by my insurance?

A. Insurance can be tricky. Depending on your plan, a portable nebulizer might be covered, but that doesn't mean you won't have to pay anything for it. If money is a concern, it’s best to call your insurance company to learn how much of the cost will be your responsibility.

The 6 best portable nebulizers - [updated for 2022].

Mike Price

For a person with a respiratory illness, a nebulizer is used to turn liquid medicine into a fine mist that is inhaled through a mask or mouthpiece, quickly delivering medication straight to the lungs.

These medications could be bronchodilators to open airways for easier breathing, sterile saline solution to open airways and thin mucus secretions, or antibiotics for someone with a severe infection.

A doctor will prescribe a nebulizer to treat asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, and sometimes bronchitis or other respiratory infection.

#6  Lumiscope Portable Ultrasonic Nebulizer Kit

portable travel nebulizer machine

Coming in at #6 on our list is the Lumiscope Portable Ultrasonic Nebulizer Kit , an economical and travel-friendly option. Designed for both adult and pediatric use, this nebulizer comes equipped with a mask to fit each, as well as 20 medication cups, 5 replacement filters, a mouthpiece, an AC/DC adapter, and a carrying bag. This lightweight machine offers effective, safe, and reliable treatment at whisper-quiet levels.

Nebulizers turn liquid medication into a mist fine enough for inhalation therapy, and this particular nebulizer by  Graham Field is suited to give therapy for asthma, chronic bronchitis, and other respiratory disorders upon a physician’s prescription. It features a unique, two-valve system that maximizes inhalation efficiency and minimizes medication waste. During exhalation, the mouthpiece valve will open, allowing the exhaled breath to pass into the air and avoid contaminating the instrument. When inhaling, this valve closes for a no-waste system. Delivering particles as small as 3-4 microns, the Lumiscope ensures utmost absorption even in smaller airways. It also has an adjustable flow volume with an average rate of .7 mL per minute for unrivaled performance.

This 7 oz nebulizer is effortless to maintain and has built-in safety features for reliable usage. A low battery indicator establishes on-time battery changes and the integrated overheat protection certifies years of dependability. Between its size, performance, and value, the Lumiscope Portable Ultrasonic Nebulizer Kit is one of the best portable nebulizers on the market.

Please note that this nebulizer is powered by the included AC/DC power cord. A battery is available as an upgrade for it to be powered cord-free.

Things to Consider When Purchasing a Nebulizer

When  choosing the right nebulizer , there are several factors to keep in mind while deciding which is the best option for your treatment needs.

Who Will Be Using It

If the nebulizer is for a child, there are pediatric models designed to fit smaller patients and be more attractive and engaging to kids through the use of colorful equipment or child-friendly themes.

Where It Will Be Used

Tabletop models are for indoor use on stable surfaces, and they often require close proximity to an electrical outlet for power. Lightweight handheld models allow for more mobility and usually have batteries so they are not tethered to an electrical outlet. Asthma patients who might need frequent treatments often benefit from smaller portable models that can be easily taken along anywhere.

Accessories and Compatibility

There are a lot of nebulizer accessories on the market, so it’s important to determine if your nebulizer will be a good fit for additional parts you might need.

Storage and Cleaning

Be sure the nebulizer is easy for you to clean and reset, and that you understand how to store it correctly.

System Design

Tabletop System -  For indoor use, it’s placed on a sturdy surface and is suitable for children who need a stationary unit. A tabletop unit is usually less expensive than a handheld model.

Handheld System -  Providing the user with more mobility, small and lightweight handheld models usually have batteries.

Method of Nebulization

Jet/aerosol (piston pump compressor).

A piston-powered compressor forces air through the liquid medication using tubing and a nebulizer cup, creating a breathable mist. They are less expensive than ultrasonic nebulizers.

An ultrasonic model uses high frequency sound vibrations to turn liquid medication into an aerosol mist with particles that are smaller and more uniform in size than piston pump models create. They are usually quieter and deliver the medicine more quickly than other models.

Vibrating Mesh

This design has a screen with laser-drilled holes. The screen is placed across the medicine reservoir, creating a cool mist to be inhaled. It is an efficient delivery system without the waste seen in atomizer models.

Who needs a nebulizer?

Nebulizers are usually prescribed by doctors to treat asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, and sometimes respiratory infections like bronchitis.

What does a nebulizer do for your lungs?

A nebulizer can deliver life-saving medications when it is hard to breathe in. It turns liquid medications into a breathable mist, delivering it via mouthpiece or facemask. Pediatric nebulizers are also a good choice for children who may not be able to work an inhaler.

I s a nebulizer better than an inhaler?

Not better, but definitely different. An inhaler requires you to squeeze the device and inhale deeply at the right moment, a nebulizer automatically turns your medication into an aerosol for ingestion through breathing.

How do you use a nebulizer machine?

The basic steps to set up and use a nebulizer are:

  • Wash your hands
  • Connect hose to air compressor
  • Fill medicine reservoir
  • Attach hose and mouthpiece to medicine cup
  • Place mouthpiece in your mouth with lips firm around it
  • Breathe through mouth until all the medicine is gone
  • Turn off machine
  • Wash the medical cup and mouthpiece

What medication is used in a nebulizer for asthma?

Corticosteroids are used to open constricted airways. Examples of these medicines are Albuteral, Xopenex, and Pulmicort.

The VixOne™ disposable nebulizer can administer treatments at a 45 degree angle, which allows patients to sit back and relax. The VixOne™ disposable nebulizer lasts about 2 weeks. The DeVilbiss 800 Series reusable nebulizer (also included) will last about 6 months. Both the disposable and reusable nebulizer sets feature short treatment times, clocked at approximately 10 minutes each.

This nebulizer is 110-240V compatible so it can be used overseas.

It is vital that you regularly replace the specific air filter and nebulizer for this compressor in order to maintain this compressor's peak performance and keep treatments as effective as possible.

Customer Reviews

The compressor seems strong but it needs a different nebulizer mouthpiece. The flow is minimal

Not the best battery life, however, it's a practical, light, life saver...

Love this. So surprised at how well it works. Just like the bigger ones. So unique for traveling

RS Recommends: The Best Portable Nebulizers for Respiratory Symptom Relief

By Natalli Amato

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Rolling Stone may receive an affiliate commission.

If you’re dealing with a respiratory illness, it can be hard to find relief from your symptoms. One effective way to alleviate symptoms is to use a portable nebulizer.

According to the Mayo Clinic , “A nebulizer is generally used for people who can’t use an inhaler, such as infants, young children, people who are very ill or people who need large doses of medication.” Nebulizers turn your prescribed medications into a fine mist, which means you can directly inhale it into your lungs through the nebulizer’s mask or mouthpiece.

What Are the Best Portable Nebulizers?

If you want to stay prepared in case of an emergency, you can now pick up some of the best portable nebulizers online without needing a prescription or referral. Many of these handheld nebulizers are super lightweight and battery-powered, so you can easily take them with you on the go (say for your commute or travel).

When you’re shopping for the best portable nebulizer for you and your needs, you’ll want to consider the nebulizer’s ease of use. You want to make sure that you can rely on your nebulizer and that you you don’t encounter struggles while you use it.

To use your nebulizer with medication, however, you’ll need a prescription from your doctor.

Here at Rolling Stone , we are not medical professionals. Therefore, it’s a good idea to consult with your doctors about which nebulizer you plan on buying. Our portable nebulizer recommendations can help you prepare for your consultation and be more informed going into your conversation with your doctor.

You can use our guide below to explore some of the best portable nebulizers on the market today.

1. Handheld Portable Nebulizer

This small, handheld personal nebulizer is excellent for travel, whether you’re going on a vacation or simply want to have your nebulizer on hand as you go throughout your regular day. It’s powered by AA batteries and can also be charged using a USB charger. It has an 8ml medicine cup and even has an auto-clean mode so you don’t have to clean the device yourself. You use this nebulizer by inhaling through its mask, which is ideal for hands-free use.

2. AZZUTORK Portable Nebulizer

This portable nebulizer is a small, sturdy machine weighing just over three pounds. This makes it a little heavier than some of the other portable nebulizers on our list, but its customizable features make it worth it.

You can set the nebulization rate to three different levels, meant to accompany children, adults, and the elderly. Additionally, it comes with a variety of different applicators that let you inhale your medication in different ways. This set also includes an air tubing, mouthpiece and air filter.

3. Ultrasonic Portable Nebulizer Machine

If you’re searching for a high-quality nebulizer that you can use throughout your home, Ultrasonic’s tabletop model may be the best portable nebulizer for you. It weighs less than 2.5 pounds and is made from medical-grade materials.

Reviews praise this model for helping to deliver quick symptom relief; treatments can be completed in as few as six minutes. This nebulizer set comes with two inhalation masks — an adult-size and a kid-size. We also appreciate this nebulizer’s premium filter.

4. Lead Life Nebulizer for Kids and Babies

Getting children to take medication can be difficult, and in many cases getting them to use an inhaler may be out of the question. That’s why portable nebulizers are especially beneficial to children. Lead Life’s portable nebulizer was designed with children (and babies) in mind. It has an ultra-quiet motor so as not to disturb them, and it comes with ergonomic masks that help your kids feel comfortable and safe while using the nebulizer without constricting them.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

portable travel nebulizer machine

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

portable travel nebulizer machine

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

portable travel nebulizer machine

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

portable travel nebulizer machine

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

portable travel nebulizer machine

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

portable travel nebulizer machine

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

portable travel nebulizer machine

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
