Pond are a psychedelic rock band hailing from Perth, Australia. The core members are Nick Allbrook, Jay Watson and Joseph Ryan, who formed in 2008 to make whatever music they wanted to make with whoever they wanted to make it with.

This is a band for whom horizons are meaningless. It’s not even entirely accurate to call them a band, since the members of the band past the core trio are so numerous and fleeting that it’s more accurate to call them a collective. One fuelled by camaraderie, creative spirit and copious amounts of psychedelics.

Two of the core trio haven’t even full time members of the band for the length of time they’ve been together. Pond are arguably the sister group of Tame Impala, since Watson was practically a founding member of them, who still drums with them to this day. Allbrook was also a member of Kevin Parker’s band until 2013, when he quit in order to continue focusing on Pond.

However, Pond had already been together for two years when Tame Impala’s “Innerspeaker” album was released and the attention levelled on Kevin Parker’s band also found its way to Allbrook, Watson and Ryan’s band as well.

They’d used their time constructively, since in those two years they’d written, recorded and released three albums, January 2009’s “Psychedelic Mango”, June 2009’s “Corridors of Blissterday” and May 2010’s “Frond”. 2010 also saw the recording of their breakthrough album “Beard, Wives, Denim”, but the album wouldn’t see release until 2012.

With that album’s release the NME named them “The Hottest New Band In The World” and in terms of activity it’s hard to disagree. They’ve since released another album, 2013’s “Hobo Rocket” and become one of the most acclaimed live acts in the world.

Any rock fan should seek out this band for whom the sky’s the limit, they’re nearing the top of their game, and look set to be something very special indeed.

Live reviews

When most bands form they have a set idea of which genre direction they want to explore or even the sort of bands they want to emulate. When Australian band Pond joined forces in 2008, their only direction was that they wanted to play whatever music they could work into a collaborative project. Releasing their debut album in early 2009 entitled ‘Psychedelic Mango’ delved into psychedelic rock whilst incorporating elements of pop and full of feel good tracks. A band always up for a challenge, they wrote and recorded their second album ‘Corridors of Blissterday’ in five days and released it five months later, which they recorded live with an eight piece band. A year later came their third album ‘Frond’ which was even poppier than any of their other releases. Their breakthrough came when the side project of some of the members’ album ‘Innerspeaker’ went into the Australian charts at number four. This was great exposure for Pond as their fourth album ‘Beard, Wives, Denim’ received much critical acclaim and gave them the opportunity to tour America. In 2012, NME magazine named Pond as ‘The Hottest New Band in the World’ and went on to play SXSW festival and support Arctic Monkeys on their Australian tour. You really get a sense of what Pond are when they perform live. With their hippy shoe-gazing demeanour on stage they create a great electric ambiance with plenty of guitar distortion and inspired psychedelic melodies. It’s hard to not fall in love and be taken aback by Pond, with so much energy and lots of catchy tunes they are simply mesmerising. This band can do no wrong.

Psychedelic rock is a growing trend globally following on from the indie boom of the mid-noughties. Following in the footsteps of fellow Aussie indie outfit Tame Impala, Pond have their eyes set on global domination with their own mind bending sounds. Supported by UK publications including NME and Q Magazine, they are now a regular frequenter of festival lineups across the country and with every show their reputation grows further.

The quintet is already five albums into their career so they have no issues in creating a setlist of the very finest surreal alt-pop gems. The fans react well as lack of commerciality means there are no hits to lead up towards and instead they can showcase their own finest picks. The music is all incredibly high quality and the musicians onstage work together brilliantly to really jam out to the likes of 'Greens Pool' and 'Xanman'. There is a potential that this band could become absolutely huge as they properly break from beneath the radar so head down and catch them now.

I have now seen Pond twice, and these guys hold the spot for my top two favorite live shows of all time. The melodic guitar riffs coupled with the other-worldly, elevating synth sounds leave you hoping they'll play forever.

Energy radiates out of lead singer Nick Allbrook, who spent half of the show in the audience. Although he first appears meek and unassuming, he immediately spring into action upon the first song, and -man- can that guy move! Bassist Jay Watson, who also plays as a touring member of Tame Impala, delivers many a killer bassline, the kind that makes you turn to the person next to you just to make sure you haven't somehow left the venue. The members of Pond work hard the entire gig, but you would never know because of the constant, light-hearted exchange between the audience and the band. Their music seems effortless, floating almost.

If you ever have the opportunity to see these guys live, do not pass it up. You'll thank me later.

So yesterday I headed down to my spirit home. A double volume warehouse brimming with musical goods of almost every variable – records, CD’s, posters, merch, books and every now and then actual living and fleshy musicians. This is Rough Trade East located in the historically nuanced Old Truman Brewery off Brick Lane. Pond, the Perth Aussie psych-rockers were treating the people of London, Engalaaand (as Nick Allbrook charmingly referred to us as) to a free afternoon show. This was all in the name of good old fashioned promotion, ground roots style, having just released their new album Man, It Feels Like Space Again. This show was AMAZING!! The sound was good, the people was cool, the place is awesome and of course... It's Pond. It reminds me to Tame Impala a lot. Although, they are different in their own way. I loved the psychedelic vibe and the presence they have playing live. It was a really solid show. The audio engineer Adam Round was incredible as well. I have no complains at all. One of the best bands I have seen live. I kinda feel bad because Temples was playing at the same time in another place, but the show was so good that it does not matter. I'll Temples later.

Pond puts on a helluva show. Ton of energy no matter how much touring and traveling they've been up to. They have a unique psychedelic funky punk rock vibe going on that brought the mid-week crowd to life. Great show, can't wait to see these guys continue to blow up.

I hate to make the comparison, but I've seen Tame Impala 9 times and they're my favorite to watch live. Correction, were. I have a new favorite live band now after last night. I should charge Pond for my medical bills after melting my face so hard!

Pond share psychedelic new single ‘Neon River’ and announce world tour dates

The track follows their 2021 LP '9'

Pond. Credit: Michael Tartaglia

Pond have shared their psychedelic new single ‘Neon River’ and have announced 2024 US, UK and EU tour dates.

  • READ MORE:  Pond face the chaos on new album ‘9’: “The world’s getting real fucking scary”

“Neon river making me shiver / Black gown and a wing / Neon river, holding my liver / Shaking as the city sinks,” sings frontman Nicholas Allbrook over a psychedelic rock guitar riff and pounding drums in the chorus of the track.

Speaking of ‘Neon River’ in a press release, the band said: “This is a full-on Pond Gemini song. Kinda tumbles through bucolic Gum (Jay Watson) larping, into Nick (Allbrook) in maximum Aerosmith spandex mode, with a brief detour into some kind of shoegaze instrumental section. The chorus is about the hollow half-dead riverside shuffle of so many pre-dawns of years gone by.”

The track’s accompanying music video sees a medieval LARP (Live Action Role Play) troupe meet a lonely hair-metal wanderer, who leads them on a pop-metal odyssey to fulfill their destiny.

The track follow’s the band’s previous full-length release, 2021’s ‘ 9 ‘. In a four-star review of the album , NME shared: “It’s can be a risky game to thrown yourself into so many different styles on a record, let alone within individual songs. Yet – from  Bowie  to  Kurt Cobain and William Burroughs – artists of all kinds have found joy in such surrealist methods of cutting up their work and putting it back together. Having perhaps taken their psych-pop to the edges of what’s possible, Pond deserve this moment. Hopefully, it proves a gateway to a new era for the band that keeps on giving.”

The band have also shared a run of tour dates that will see them performing in the US, UK and EU. Following a string of shows in Australia and New Zealand as opening support for Queens Of The Stone Age , Pond will set off on their rescheduled US tour dates in May followed by their return to the UK and EU in autumn. Check out the full tour dates below and visit here to purchase tickets for the US and here for tickets in the UK .

POND Release New Single 'Neon River' & Announce Major Tour Including Rescheduled North American Dates

“Neon River” is accompanied by a video clip where a medieval LARP (Live Action Role Play).

pixeltracker

Pond—one of the most versatile, inquisitive, and accomplished bands of the psychedelic rock vanguard have released a new single, “Neon River” today.

LATEST NEWS

The single is a delightful seesaw, shifting between gossamer spans of acoustic beauty and slicing, shout-out-loud paroxysms that suggest Led Zeppelin in trim fighting form. It's a new era of Pond, one that sees the band at their peak - matching the unbridled energy of their live show with unbridled creativity in the studio. Listen to “Neon River” HERE .

Pond on “Neon River”

This is a full on Pond Gemini song. Kinda tumbles through bucolic Gum (Jay Watson) larping, into Nick (Allbrook) in maximum Aerosmith spandex mode, with a brief detour into some kind of shoegaze instrumental section. The chorus is about the hollow half dead riverside shuffle of so many pre dawns of years gone by.

“Neon River” is accompanied by a video clip where a medieval LARP (Live Action Role Play) troupe meets a lonely hair-metal wanderer, who leads them on a pop-metal odyssey to fulfill their destiny. Shot on 16mm film, the video sees Allbrook pulling swords from stone and exploding out of confettified super banners like a pocket rocket, launching the troupe from pestilential medieval servitude, into glam rock ecstasy. The four minute fever dream comes complete with high speed chases, slow motion solo rock outs and stinging POND performances.

Pond's prowess in the live arena has been well documented. Fronted by multi-instrumentalist Nicholas Allbrook, Rolling Stone notes he “ooz[es] with that enigmatic frontman energy and charisma that would rival Jagger in his prime. Witnessing the symbiotic and devoted relationship between Pond and their fans evoke[s] the kind of enamored elation within that only live music can replicate. Watching this interaction unfold [feels] like magic in its most pure of forms.” The band will return to the road, hitting three continents throughout 2024.

First up is a previously announced run of Australia and New Zealand dates supporting Queens of the Stone Age. The tour kicks off in Pond's hometown of Perth on February 10th and wraps nearly a month later in Christchurch, New Zealand. In May, the band returns to the US for a rescheduled tour. Originally slated for 2023, the new dates will kick off in Nashville, TN on May 1st. The Topeka Area Water Garden Society will host its annual Pond Tour this weekend.

Tours will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

This year's self-guiding tour will include 10 stops with ponds sizing from small to large. Those who attend will have the opportunity to learn how to incorporate water features into a small spaces and more.

Funds raised from the tour goes towards helping to maintain or build water features in the community. Past projects include water features at the Ronald McDonald House, Anna's pond at Ward-Meade Botanical Garden, Midland Hospice House and more, said Sue Mowder, who is a member of the garden society.

Two public gardens will be featured in this year's tour, Colmery-O'Neil V.A. Medical Center Pond and Ward-Meade Botanical Garden.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Mowder said the most exciting thing about this year's tour is that the Colmery O'Neil pond is on the tour after being built 20 years ago. The pond was built from funds from that year's pond tour.

Pond release new single Neon River , announce new international tour dates

Perth psych-rock legends  Pond  have released a new single,  Neon River,   today.

The new track sees the local five-piece shifting between acoustic beauty and slicing, shout-out-loud paroxysms that suggest Led Zeppelin in trim fighting form, matching the energy of their live show with their creativity in the studio.

“This is a full-on Pond Gemini song,” said the band about the new release. “Kinda tumbles through bucolic Gum (Jay Watson) larping, into Nick (Allbrook) in maximum Aerosmith spandex mode, with a brief detour into some kind of shoegaze instrumental section. The chorus is about the hollow, half-dead riverside shuffle of so many pre-dawns of years gone by.”

Neon River is accompanied by a video clip where a medieval LARP (Live Action Role Play) troupe meets a lonely hair-metal wanderer, who leads them on a pop-metal odyssey to fulfil their destiny. Shot on 16mm film, the video sees Allbrook pulling swords from stone and exploding out of confettified super banners, launching the troupe from pestilential medieval servitude into glam rock ecstasy. The four-minute clip comes complete with high-speed chases, slow-motion solo rockouts, and Pond performances.

The new release arrives alongside news that Pond will return to the road, hitting three continents throughout 2024.

First up is a previously announced run of Australia and New Zealand dates supporting  Queens of the Stone Age , kicking off at Perth’s  Red Hill Auditorium  on  Saturday, February 10.

Pond will then return to the US for a rescheduled tour. Originally slated for 2023, the new tour includes 12 dates throughout May. Pond will then return to the UK and Europe for a major tour in September and October, with shows in Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam and Germany.

Originally formed in the turn of the 2010s, fronted by Nick Allbrook  with  Jay Watson  and  Joe Ryan , Pond added  Jamie Terry  shortly afterwards, with  James Ireland  later rounding out the five-piece. Ever prolific, Pond boast an impressive nine studio albums in their repertoire.

Pond Announce New Album and Australian Tour

The psychedelic rockers bite back with a sprawling double lp on the horizon.

Pond

Michael Tartaglia

It’s a big morning for Pond , who have just announced a new album and an Australian tour later this year.

The psychedelic rock band’s tenth record, Stung!, is set to release late June.

Their new single and video “(I’m) Stung” is out today, revealing their unique take on life and love.

“I wrote most of this while mowing someone’s lawn,” they say. “I went home and put my fingers on the piano and pretty much played the base of it first go. This is a very rare and special treat and buoyed me for weeks. It’s funny because I had a mad crush on someone, and they dropped me like a sack of shit and this song just flew down and clocked me right in the forehead and I felt totally better. Then Gin and Gum added all their magic – cool sounds, passing chords.

“It’s about being totally pathetically stung by someone and just having to be cool with it being unrequited. Being resilient, accepting that you are a bit of a goose, but life goes on.”

“(I’m) Stung” is accompanied by a music video featuring the band adventuring in the sand dunes of Lancelin, Western Australia shimmering from head to toe in silver body paint. You can watch the clip, which was shot on Super 8 film, below.

“We went to Lancelin, one of the most stereotypically Western Australian looking places in Western Australia, armed with a super 8 camera, 12 tubes of silver body paint and a rock eisteddfod wardrobe.” Pond explain of the video. “Nothing but the blistering heat and dehydration and a battalion of legendary holidaymakers in ATVs stood between us and cinema history.

“Our friend Chris Adams also put on his little “filmic auteur” cap and carried our shit around while we cavorted among the dunes dressed like a knock off NSYNC. Omg and the bee!! The bee obviously makes it. Nick kind of lost his mind in the endless whiteness and started fearfully battling the beast in the sky. Probably all the paint fumes.”

“(I’m) Stung” follows their February release, “ Neon River” , their first releases since 2022. Both tracks are set to feature on the upcoming album dropping on Friday, June 21st.

And unlike their previous four albums, including 2021’s 9 , which reached number six on the Australian Albums Chart and kept things tight at 40 minutes, Stung! goes all out with a double-LP format featuring 14 songs, promising their most expansive and impressive hour of music yet.

The band have also revealed Australian headline dates for June and July, including shows in Sydney, Hobart, Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane, Fremantle, as well as their recently announced set at Splendour in the Grass (see full dates below).

2024 Tour de France: How to watch, schedule, odds for cycling's top race

pond us tour

The biggest cycling event of the year - the 111th Tour de France -- kicks off Saturday from Florence, Italy. The 2024 Tour de France's unusual route starts in Italy for the first time ever to honor 100 years since the first Italian victory in the Tour by Ottavio Bottecchia in 1924. Also, due to the 2024 Summer Olympics, the Tour de France will not finish in Paris for the first time in event history.

The 21 stages will cover more than 2,000 miles from Saturday through July 21. Two-time defending winner Jonas Vingegaard looks to become just the ninth cyclist to win at least three Tour de France races. Last year's runner-up, Tadej Pogačar, is looking to do the same. He won in 2020 and 2021 before finishing second to Vingegaard in 2022 and 2023.

Here's what you need to know about this year's race:

U.S. Rowing Masters competition returns to Langley Pond

LANGLEY POND, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Southeast Masters Regional Rowing Championships are back at Langley Pond over the weekend in Aiken County.

U.S. Rowing welcomed hundreds of rowers from all over the country, and you got to catch it from a pretty cool view, too.

If you headed out to the park Saturday morning, spectators of the Regatta saw a couple of new additions, three docks at midpoint.

And the finish line spectator dock debuted.

It is a major upgrade for Langley.

The pond has been hosting rowing competitions for almost three decades.

There are s similar ones that are all over the United States and we had about 300 rowers from eight states across the Southeast rowing in more than 250 events.

Augusta rowers were featured in Saturday’s Men’s Masters single race and the Women’s Masters eight-person race.

Taylor Swift gets stuck on a platform during Dublin Eras Tour concert

Her backup dancer thankfully was on hand to give the pop star a lift.

Lester Fabian Brathwaite is a staff writer at Entertainment Weekly , where he covers breaking news, all things Real Housewives , and a rich cornucopia of popular culture. Formerly a senior editor at Out magazine, his work has appeared on NewNowNext , Queerty , Rolling Stone , and The New Yorker . Taylor Swift knew she was in trouble when she couldn't walk off.

While performing in Dublin, the singer's mechanical platform got stuck, stranding her during her performance of “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived.” Thinking fast, Swift's backup dancer Jon Ravnik assisted her off the platform.

Sign up for  Entertainment Weekly's  free daily newsletter  to get breaking TV news, exclusive first looks, recaps, reviews, interviews with your favorite stars, and more.

As in previous performances, the platform was supposed to lower and disappear into the stage, but fan-captured video shows Ravnik's platform descending while Swift's stays in place. Swift kept singing though looked visibly confused, but smiled as Ravnik came over and scooped her off the structure.

Swift's boyfriend Travis Kelce briefly took over chivalrous duties from Swift's backup dancers while in London , carrying her to the fainting couch during her performance of "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart."

The Eras Tour has been going on since last year and has had its fair share of mishaps, including a broken heel that left Swift walking around like Barbie.
