What you need to know for the 2023 pga tour champions season.

The PGA Tour Champions will begin its 44th season this week in Hawaii, and there is an abundance of storylines to keep an eye on this year.
Steven Alker, the reigning Charles Schwab Cup winner, looks to continue his Cinderella run in 2023, which will be his second full season on tour. The 51-year-old New Zealander, who won four times in ’22, is looking to become the first repeat Schwab Cup champion since Bernhard Langer claimed the title in three consecutive years from 2014-16.
Speaking of Langer, he’s staring at history.
The 65-year-old German, who became the tour’s oldest-ever winner last season, has 44 senior tour titles — one victory away from tying Hale Irwin’s all-time record. Langer has strung together 10 straight multi-win seasons, and if the two-time Masters champion makes it 11 in 2023, he’ll sit alone at the top.
Langer is defying time. He finished sixth last year in the cup standings and won it in ’21. Father Time, however, is ultimately undefeated, and in November, days before winning the TimberTech Championship, Langer said he’s “closer” to retirement, but isn’t ready to shelve his clubs just yet.
Some of Langer’s biggest challengers for a seventh Schwab Cup will be 2021 Ryder Cup captains Steve Stricker, 55, and Padraig Harrington, 51, who both tied Alker for the most wins (four) in ’22. Stricker notched that feat despite missing nearly half of the season recovering from a mysterious illness.
Jerry Kelly, Fred Couples, Thongchai Jaidee, Retief Goosen, Darren Clarke, Steve Flesch and Miguel Angel Jiménez, who led the circuit last year in top-10s with 16, hope to follow up strong seasons. Ernie Els, Mike Weir, David Toms, K.J. Choi, Alex Cejka, Stephen Ames and 2021 Rookie of the Year Jim Furyk are looking to take home a trophy after a winless ’22.
Second-year players Y.E. Yang, Ken Duke, Tim Petrovic, Brian Gay and Robert Karlsson are aiming for their maiden wins, while former world No. 1 David Duval hopes for a bounce-back sophomore campaign after his best finish last year in 21 events was a T-31.
Several years ago, Notah Begay III and Justin Leonard both traded in their clubs for a microphone. However, after turning 50 last year and getting their feet wet on the PGA Tour Champions, they both headline this year’s rookie class.
Leonard, the 1997 Open champion, last played full-time on the PGA Tour in 2015, but called it quits after failing to record a top-10 in consecutive seasons. Begay, a four-time Tour winner, made his final Tour-sanctioned start in 2013, as back injuries took a toll on him. They both competed a little last year on the senior set, with Begay playing twice and Leonard four times.
Both still plan to fulfill their broadcasting duties with Golf Channel and NBC Sports and hope their double schedule won’t wear them down as try to recapture glory on the course.
“It’s a little bit of a juggling act,” Leonard said in September, “but I knew going in and I enjoy both things. It’s a great crew at NBC, but I’ve really enjoyed also getting back into playing and practicing ... It’s something that I didn’t really know I had missed.”
“I’m trying to schedule around my kids’ birthday parties and basketball games and things like that,” Begay said in October. “My NBC schedule, obviously I’m going to do a little bit of television next year. I took a look at the schedule and looking at somewhere between 12 and 15 events and hopefully make some of the playoff events. It’s a pretty full docket for me and I’m going to require some good organization. Do you know anybody that can help me?”
Begay and Leonard, however, won’t be the only notable newbies on the over-50 circuit this season. There’s the five Q-School recipients, which include Tim O’Neal. Plus, Tour winners Boo Weekley, Jason Bohn, Daniel Chopra, Brian Bateman and Stewart Cink are expected to make their debuts this year.
“I will probably sprinkle in a few [PGA Tour Champions] events, but my plan is to focus on PGA Tour golf for a while,” Cink, the 2009 Open champion who turns 50 in May, said at December’s PNC Championship.
But every season, you never know whose golf career can be given a second lease on life.
In August 2021, Alker was virtually unknown, never recording a top-10 in 122 career Tour starts. However, shortly after turning 50, he Monday qualified for the Boeing Classic and finished T-7. With the top 10, he got into the following event and then recorded six straight top-10s before notching his maiden victory.
Now, playing alongside a slew of regular major winners, Alker is arguably the face of the tour entering 2023.
2023 PGA Tour schedule: The LIV money question, majors, key dates and changes
The 2023 PGA Tour schedule features 44 regular-season events and $428.6 million in official prize money, the PGA announced Monday. Another $145 million is available in bonuses.
The schedule includes six out of eight invitationals (the Sentry Tournament of Champions, Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational, Memorial Tournament, Players Championship and WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play) with significantly increased prize money.

As previously announced, the FedExCup Playoffs will include a smaller field than in years past. For the first round, 70 players will earn a start at the St. Jude Championship, then 50 players will advance to the BMW Championship and 30 to the TOUR Championship.
The 2023 schedule marks the last before the Tour transitions to a calendar-year season beginning in 2024.
View the full schedule and prize money changes here.
The changes come shortly about LIV Golf announced an expansion to 14 tournaments, with $405 million available in prize money, for 2023.
Here’s what you need to know about the 2023 PGA Tour schedule.
When are the majors?
Did any tournaments get a bad draw.
Organizers for the Travelers Championships, Rocket Mortgage Classic and John Deere Classic might be chasing player commitments in Hunger Games-style campaigns next spring. Those three events, in order from late June through early July, follow a stretch of play beginning in early May going from the Wells Fargo Championship to the Byron Nelson to the PGA Championship (Oak Hill) to the Charles Schwab to the Memorial to the Canadian Open to the U.S. Open (Los Angeles Country Club). All those are desirable starts and, in theory, more highly regarded than the Travelers, Rocket Mortgage or John Deere.
And immediately followed that Travelers-RMC-John Deere stretch? It’s the Scottish Open and and the Open Championship (Royal Liverpool).
How many events of those three squeezed-in tournament starts are high-profile players reasonably make? It’s easy to imagine some guys skipping two of them.
Of the three, though, the Rocket Mortgage faces an entirely separate issue. The tournament drew the Fourth of July slot on the calendar. As any Michigander will tell you, the southeast quadrant of the state often looks like an empty parking lot on the holiday weekend. The Rocket Mortgage previously landed on the Fourth of July in both 2020 and 2021. In 2020, no spectators were permitted, so it was moot. (But even still, that field included only 20 of the top 100 players in the world .) In 2021, attendance numbers dropped off from the inaugural event in 2019 (June 27-30). So, now, in 2023, the Rocket Mortgage will not only have to navigate a crowded window for players, but also a tough calendar for its locals.
Why did the money increase so much?
The gut reaction is, “Oh, LIV Golf arrived and suddenly the PGA Tour is opening up the purse strings. Hypocrisy!!”
Well, yeah, it’s not remotely that simple. Was the PGA Tour forced to bulk up prize money in response to LIV? Absolutely. No choice.
The fact is, though, purse increases were coming regardless. Would they have been to this extent? Would the eight invitationals increase their purses to range from $15 to $25 million? We don’t know. However, when the tour signed its new nine-year, $7 billion media rights agreement with CBS Sports, NBC Sports and ESPN back in March 2020, it wasn’t scheduled to go into effect until 2022 and wouldn’t have been reflected in 2021-22 season numbers. Now that the tour has arrived at the 2022-23 slate, the numbers are spiking. This was coming, LIV or no LIV.
The 2022-23 PGA TOUR schedule is here. • Condensed #FedExCup Playoffs fields (From 125/70/30 to 70/50/30) • Elevated purses for invitationals ($15 to $25 million) • Bonus pools increase to $145 million overall More details below ⬇️ — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) August 1, 2022
As far as the bonus pool goes, $145 million is available in 2022-23. The breakdown: $75 million for the FedEx Cup, $20 million for the Comcast Business Tour Top 10 and $50 million for the Player Impact Program.
All told, the purses money available for non-majors in 2022-23 comes to a total pot of $428.6 million, not including bonus money. That’s an increase of $68.3 million in non-major purses from 2022 to 2023.
Is extra money actually going to make a difference?
Good question. Probably not.
LIV Golf’s money cannon still dwarfs what the PGA Tour is offering. Even more, if the Saudi Public Investment Fund wants to put up another $2 billion into this asset to throw more outrageous figures at players — hey, would Rory McIlroy or Jordan Spieth or Justin Thomas or Jon Rahm turn down $500 million? How about $750 million? A billion? Point is, if the PIF wants to make that kind of money available and LIV organizers want to put forth those kind of offers, they can do it and there’s nothing the PGA Tour can do to compete with those sums.
Does more tour money makes it easier for those who say no to LIV to feel reasonably sensible? Maybe. But at the end of the day, the only reason anyone is staying on the PGA Tour instead of defecting to LIV is because they’re already wealthy and that’s where they want to play.
Why did the number of players who make the postseason shrink?
A few reasons, but most interesting to me is this 1) adds some drama of more established players potentially falling outside the top 70 and having to compete to retain their tour status and 2) adds some legitimate meaning to those events in the fall series for fans. Whereas there was little reason to flip over from football in previous years, now there’s at least a reason to check in.
Best week on the tour?
The 2023 schedule will see the Waste Management and the Super Bowl played on the same weekend in the same city. Send bail.

Where and When is the 2023 PGA Championship? All You Need to Know
More in news:.
The PGA Championship has truly been a treat in recent years. From Phil Mickelson’s glorious win at Kiawah to Brooks Koepka’s unbeatable performances and Jordan Spieth’s impressive hunt for the career grand slam, this underappreciated gem always packs a punch. The PGA Championship most certainly deserves recognition for its lasting impact and thrilling memories it has given us over the years.
Now all eyes are focused on the upcoming 2023 PGA Championship. What’s it going to be? Where and when will this spectacle of a tournament take place? No need to worry, we’ve got you covered! Read on to get the scoop on this year’s second major championship.
About Location
The Oak Hill Country Club – East Course in Rochester, NY has been chosen as the spot for the 2023 PGA Championship. It’s so prestigious that they’ve had this honor three times before, including 2013 when Jason Dufner won. Crazy to think of what technology allows us today, from watching the golf tournaments to enjoying various online activities, such as playing online pokies , right from the comfort of our homes.
Oak Hill really hit the jackpot when it comes to hosting major golf events. It’s been a stage for the PGA Championship twice (2003 and 1980), U.S Open thrice (1956, 1968, and 1989), Ryder Cup in 1995, plus two instances of U.S Amateur (1949 & 1998) and Senior PGA Championship as recent as 2008 and 2019.
Dates and Schedule
Only a few weeks after the dramatic The Masters, we all have the 2023 PGA Championship all lined up for May 18th to 21st. That’s a change of pace – they’ve switched things up with scheduling this year.
In fact, back in 2019, a major shake-up happened for golf enthusiasts when it was announced that the PGA Championship would move from August to May. To top everything up, golf enthusiasts can now look forward to this thrilling event earlier in the year.
Almost all of the top 100 players have entered the tournament, a whopping 99 of them, with Masters champion Jon Rahm and defending PGA champ, Justin Thomas at the head of the bunch. Unfortunately, Will Zalatoris (who’s sidelined while recuperating from back surgery) is just one absentee.
No Tiger Woods or 66-year-old Jeff Sluman on the list this time – Tiger’s still recovering from his ankle surgery, while Jeff decided to skip out despite having a lifetime exemption as the 1988 PGA winner. Still though, there’s one high profile player whose name everyone’s buzzing about: Jordan Spieth. But his participation remains up in the air, as he had to bail out of the Byron Nelson tournament because of a wrist injury.

Who won the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship? Last year's winner and final leaderboard explored
T he upcoming 2024 Wells Fargo Championship is the next tournament on the PGA Tour after the conclusion of The CJ Cup Byron Nelson 2024. Set to begin on May 9 at the Quail Hollow Club, the event will feature some of the biggest names in the world of golf.
Hence, there is plenty of anticipation around the event. However, before the 2024 edition of the tournament begins, it's important to know who won the 2023 edition of it. Last year's edition was won by American professional golfer Wyndham Clark.
At last year's event, Clark registered a 4-stroke victory over Xander Schauffele who finished in second place. Due to his victory at the event, Clark took home a staggering sum of $3,600,000, whereas Schauffele and third-place winners Harris English and Tyrrell Hatton took home $2,180,000 and $1,180,000, respectively.
While Wyndham Clark enjoyed his win last year, in 2024 he is set to return and defend his title. It will be interesting to see if Clark can retain his title given the amount of talent he is going to go up against at the event.
Wells Fargo to reportedly discontinue their golf tournament sponsorship after the 2024 event
Since 2011, the Wells Fargo Championship has been one of the most prestigious events on the PGA Tour . Before the San Fransisco-based company sponsored the tournament, it was known as the Wachovia Championship in 2003 and the Quail Hollow Championship in 2009 and 2010.
However, the tournament became most popular by the name Wells Fargo Championship when the company decided to come on board as a sponsor. While the company has enjoyed a successful relationship with the tournament since 2011, reports suggest they are set to discontinue their sponsorship.
Erik Spanberg from the Charlotte Business Journal reported the news. On his social media handle (X), Spanberg wrote:
An official statement from the company via the Charlotte Business Journal further expanded on their decision to not continue their sponsorship. The statement read:
"Wells Fargo is not renewing the Wells Fargo Championship as a Signature Event in 2025 and beyond. To drive efficiency and support our business long term, we regularly review and adjust our overall sponsorship strategy. We are incredibly proud of the 20-plus year history of the championship."
It further read:
"The tournament has generated significant local impact and delighted golf fans in Charlotte and across the country. Since 2003, the Wells Fargo Championship has generated more than $30 million in support of numerous charitable foundations."
While the sponsorship will come to an end after the 2024 edition, the Quail Hollow Club does not intend to shut down the tournament. They are keen on finding new sponsors. Once the 2024 edition of this tournament ends, it will be interesting to see who will be the new sponsors.
