Whether you're planning your first visit to Antarctica or a return trip, andBeyond has a new dream itinerary that might pique your interest — particularly if you travel with conservation in mind.

In February 2025, the luxury travel company will partner with Quark Expeditions to host a 19-day voyage to South America and Antarctica by land and sea, accompanied by acclaimed conservationist and philanthropist Kristine (Kris) McDivitt Tompkins.

Tompkins, the former CEO of gear company Patagonia, Inc ., established Tompkins Conservation with her late husband, Doug; the nonprofit was responsible for the formation of Chile's Patagonia National Park in 2018. During the trip, Tompkins will share stories about her experience creating a national park, as well as personal anecdotes from her many adventures.

The trip begins in Santiago, Chile, before continuing into Torres del Paine National Park, where travelers will go on a Patagonian safari with puma researchers to learn about their conservation efforts. Then you'll travel to Punta Arenas, Chile, where you'll enjoy a full-day excursion to Cabo Froward, the southernmost point in South America known for its wildlife, ranging from sei whales to Magellanic penguins. From there, it's off to Ushuaia, Argentina, and onward to Antarctica aboard Quark Expeditions' Ultramarine, an upscale expedition ship outfitted with two helicopters for aerial exploration.

“We are thrilled to be working closely with other organizations that reflect our own values,” Pedro Barraza, andBeyond's managing director in South America, said in a statement. “andBeyond has a long-standing relationship with Kris Tompkins and her teams, with our conservation experts from Africa having provided advice and support to both Rewilding Chile and Rewilding Argentina in preparation for their wildlife reintroduction projects. We also relish the opportunity to partner with Quark Expeditions, whose Polar Promise principles reflect our own motto of care of land, wildlife, and people.”

The trip, which departs on Feb. 25, 2025, includes three meals a day (including everything but premium spirits and wine), all excursions, and charter flights, and it's limited to just 14 guests. Rates start at $34,400 per person and can be booked at andbeyond.com .

We’ll set sail down the Chilean coast to explore the unique world of Antarctica. Every day, our route will be guided by nature as we make the best of local conditions. Each sunrise will offer something different and thrilling. In October and November on the seventh continent, penguins start courting and nesting. Fall in love with this frozen yet uniquely beautiful world as you go on landings and small boat (RIB) adventures.

Your expedition cruise takes in designated World Heritage Sites and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. These include colorful Valparaíso, the ornate churches of Chiloé at Castro, and the spectacular landscapes, glaciers, and lakes of Torres del Paine National Park. Having sailed down the awe-inspiring coast of Patagonia, we’ll attempt a landing at Cape Horn as part of our adventure.

Standard Activities

About the in-depth antarctica & patagonia expedition (southbound), itinerary day to day, valparaíso, a unesco gem.

Your Antarctica and Patagonia expedition cruise begins in colorful Valparaíso. Known as the ‘Jewel of the Pacific’, this friendly UNESCO-listed city is built on steep hillsides overlooking the ocean.

Filled with enticing scents and sounds, it’s an exhilarating maze of alleyways and barrios, colorful houses, and ‘mercados’ packed with local produce. Take it all in on a funicular ride up to Cerro Alegre and Concepción.

If you’d like to do some more exploring before we set sail, we recommend joining one of our optional Pre-Programs.

Preparing for adventure

Over the next two days at sea, you’ll learn more about the wonders we’ll encounter on our trip.

Expedition Team members are experts in everything from oceanography and geology to ornithology and history. Drop in on their fascinating lectures and hands-on presentations in the Science Center.

Grab a pair of binoculars and look for rare wandering albatrosses and petrels. Make the most of your onboard facilities and enjoy the hot tubs, panoramic sauna, and gym.

Castro's Chilotans charm

Set among the lush vegetation of Chiloé Island, Castro is Chile’s third-oldest city. It’s home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, namely Iglesia San Francisco and Iglesia Nuestra Señora de Gracia de Nercón.

From various vantage points, enjoy great views of the city’s colorful ‘palafitos,’ which are stilt houses situated along the waterfront. For a bit of culture, head to the Regional Museum and the Museum of Modern Art.

Bring your binoculars, as Chiloé is an important habitat for bird species such as green-backed firecrowns and Chilean flamingos, along with penguins, black-necked swans, ringed kingfishers, and silvery grebes.

Fabled Patagonian waters

We cruise south toward Puerto Natales, the capital of Última Esperanza. The iceberg-studded waters of Patagonia are captivating, with mesmerizing shades of blue, from the brightest aquamarine to the deepest midnight hues.

As we sail, there’s a good chance you’ll see whales, seabirds, penguins, and more. Take in the scenery from the panoramic sauna or the hot tubs on deck, enjoy locally sourced cuisine, and relax in the Explorer Lounge & Bar.

The Expedition Team will be on hand with fascinating lectures about local history and wildlife. Our onboard photographer can also help with tips on landscape photography.

Remote Puerto Edén

Set at the end of a deep fjord, our next stop is the enchanting Patagonian village of Puerto Edén, set in Bernardo O’Higgins National Park.

The tiny settlement is only accessible by sea, and the ferry that connects it to the mainland only visits once a month. There are no roads here – just wooden boardwalks connecting houses and shops. Its 250 inhabitants include some of the last remaining members of the Indigenous Kawésqar people. You will have the chance to talk to them and gain insight into their unique culture.

Bohemian Puerto Natales

Our expedition cruise continues to Puerto Natales, the gateway to Torres del Paine National Park. You can choose to see this beautiful national park on either a bus or hiking tour – both experiences are worth doing.

The rugged landscape features steppe, forest, and desert, punctuated by glaciers and lakes. Guanacos and rheas roam freely. Look out for Chilean flamingos and you may even spot the mighty Andean condor.

Puerto Natales is a popular hub for hikers and travelers, with many eateries, bars, and outdoor shops. Set out on your own to visit the artisan village at Etherh Aike, enjoy a gin tour at the Last Hope Distillery, or stroll along the photogenic waterfront.

Exploring Chile's Fjords

Witness scenic landscapes filled with wildlife on your journey south along the Chilean coast, taking you through the ruggedly beautiful island chains that make up the fjords of Magallanes Province. Isolated islands and hidden bays create a rich haven for wildlife.

Whether cruising aboard our small boats (RIBs) or on deck, look out for colonies of Magellanic penguins, elephant seals, and various whale species. You may also see majestic waterfalls along this dramatic and beautiful section of coastline.

Rounding Cape Horn

After sailing through the Beagle Channel, we’ll pass the southernmost tip of South America, Cape Horn. This formidable icon often presents challenging conditions, but weather permitting, we’ll attempt to land there.

From here, we’ll navigate the legendary Drake Passage toward Antarctica. En route, we will prepare you for what lies ahead and show you how to make your visit as safe and sustainable as possible.

In the Science Center, the Expedition Team will give lectures about Antarctica’s fauna, history, and geology, as well as the impact of climate change and plastic pollution. You can also get involved in our Citizen Science projects.

Experience Antarctica in all its natural majesty

Nothing prepares you for your first sight of Antarctica’s immense, frozen beauty. Icebergs, sculpted by nature, float in the straits. Gentoo and chinstrap penguins court while Adélie penguins nest. Countless seabirds wheel overhead. Nature is in charge.

During the next seven days, you’ll be busy exploring several landing sites. There are more than 20 possible sites on and around the Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands. It doesn’t matter where we go or what we do, every day will be thrilling and unlike anything you’ve experienced before.

We might sail into a flooded volcanic caldera or land in icy bays where remnants of whaling paraphernalia lie abandoned. You may also have the chance to kayak among icebergs and seals or snowshoe to a stunning viewpoint.

Bird enthusiasts should look skyward for Antarctic seabirds such as skuas, petrels, and terns. Through onboard lectures and onshore talks, you’ll learn more about this precious habitat and how we can all protect it for the future.

patagonia antarctica tour

Relax and unwind at sea

After seven days on your expedition cruise in Antarctica, it’s time to head back. Your mind will be full of unforgettable sights and sounds and your camera’s memory cards will be bursting with impressive images.

During your last few days at sea, you can recap your experiences with your Expedition Team and fellow guests, satisfy your curiosity in the Science Center, relax in the Explorer Lounge & Bar, and enjoy delicious onboard cuisine as the waves roll by.

You can also unwind from all the excitement by making the most of the panoramic sauna and hot tubs before we arrive in Punta Arenas.

Arrival in Punta Arenas, Santiago de Chile

Your Antarctica and Patagonia expedition cruise comes to an end in Punta Arenas. From here, you’ll catch a flight back to Santiago de Chile, taking with you a wealth of fantastic memories that will last a lifetime.

If you’re not ready to end your adventure just yet, we recommend extending your trip and joining one of our optional Post-Programs.

Patagonia travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Where is Patagonia?

Patagonia is a geographical region located at the southern tip of South America.

It spans the lower sections of Argentina and Chile and is governed by both countries.

Do I need a visa to visit Patagonia?

You will need to organize your visa. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information.

Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date information specific to your nationality.

Check the Essential Trip Information section of the itinerary for more information.

What is the weather like in Patagonia?

Patagonia is much cooler than the rest of South America. With diverse terrain ranging from glaciers to mountains and coastlines, the region sees extreme variations in weather.

Average temperatures range from 48-64°F in summer and 32-43°F in winter, but sub-zero temperatures are common.

The weather can be unpredictable at any time of year, and it feels much cooler when there are strong winds.

Snow is possible towards the end of autumn (May), and continues into winter with heavy snowfall down south and in the mountains.

When is the best time to visit Patagonia?

October to March (spring/summer) is considered to be the best time to visit Patagonia; this is when most of our trips run. During this period, daytime temperatures average up to 72°F, but it's a chilly 39°F at night.

Rain and strong winds are possible at any time of year and can make the temperature feel much cooler.

Is tipping customary in Patagonia?

Tipping in Patagonia is common, but only when you’re satisfied with the service.

Aim for 10-15% of a bill at a restaurant or cafe as a general guide (if it’s not included already).

It’s also common to give hotel porters, drivers and other staff a small tip.

What is internet access like in Patagonia?

You will find wi-fi in most hotels, cafes and restaurants in large towns and cities, but it can be harder to find as you venture to more remote areas.

You may wish to buy a local SIM card if you want to stay in contact with folks at home, but a phone signal can still be patchy in remote areas.

What are the toilets like in Patagonia?

You will find Western-style flushable toilets in Patagonia.

It is a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as they’re not always provided.

Just note that while the toilets are modern, the plumbing isn’t and can clog easily, so you may see signs asking you not to flush toilet paper and use the bin provided instead.

What is ATM access like in Patagonia?

ATMs are available in larger towns and cities but are less common in small villages or rural areas.

Make sure you have enough cash before leaving urban areas.

Argentina uses the Argentinean Peso, while Chile uses the Chilean Peso. It might also be worth bringing some US dollars.

Can I use my credit card in Patagonia?

Credit cards may not be accepted in small towns and rural areas.

Make sure to carry enough cash when visiting rural areas in case credit cards are not an option.

What to pack for Patagonia

Please check your Essential Trip Information for a complete list of packing suggestions for your itinerary.

These are the basics you will need to bring for an active adventure in Patagonia:

  • Closed-in, waterproof walking shoes/hiking boots

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Local neighborhoods combine commercial and culinary highlights, state-of-the-art architecture, and night life. Itinerary idea in detail

With international flights from a choice of airports including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Today you begin your journey by boarding your international outbound flight to Santiago.

Arrive in Santiago after your international flight. From the airport, you will have a private transfer into the city and take a half-day tour of Santiago to get acquainted with the city.

Santiago, Chile

This morning, you will have a private transfer to the airport for your domestic flight to Punta Arenas. Once in Punta Arenas, you will be met by a representative from your all-inclusive lodge, who will transfer you and other guests into Torres del Paine National Park.

Torres del Paine, Chile

Today, you will be out exploring the highlights of Torres del Paine. Excursions can range from gentle walks to full-day treks. Horseback riding and more cultural outings can also be arranged.

Sunrise in Torres del Paine National Park

Trekking is a highlight of any visit to Torres del Paine. You can opt for something easy, like the Paine Mountain Path, or a full-day trek to the base of the famous towers.

Rio Paine, Torres del Paine National Park

The lodge will arrange a shared transfer across the border into Argentina. You will be dropped off at your hotel in El Calafate and have the afternoon and evening at your leisure.

El Calafate in Autumn (April), Argentina

Leave the town and spend the day on a working estancia on the Patagonian steppe, where you will learn about the people who call Patagonia home. Of course, no visit would be complete without a traditional asado.

The Perito Moreno Glacier, El Calafate

This morning, you will have a private transfer to the airport for your flight to Ushuaia. Upon arrival, you will have another private transfer to your hotel. The afternoon has been left at your leisure in anticipation of the journey ahead, but Tierra del Fuego offers plenty in the way of exploration, and excursions can be arranged.

Tierra del Fuego, Ushuaia

Enjoy some free time to explore the city in the morning before you board the ship and set sail along the Beagle Channel. Settle into your cabin.

Beagle Channel, Ushuaia

You will enter the Drake Passage at around 2am, and the day will be spent making your way across this notorious stretch of water. Surprisingly, an amazing amount of wildlife can be seen on the way, with wandering albatross, Wilson’s petrel and even blue whales present.

You'll come to the end of the Drake Passage and start to spot the first icebergs as you approach the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula.

This day will be made up of shore landings and excursions on the Antarctic Peninsula and nearby islands such as Petermann, Livingston, and Deception. There will generally be two excursions per day.

Today, you'll hopefully have your first encounter with a penguin colony. Depending on the season, you may see them building their nests, guarding their eggs, or raising their newborn chicks.

You may also have the chance to camp on the ice, go kayaking or even snorkelling or diving. More and more adventure options are being added to Antarctic expeditions, so please let us know if you are interested.

Zodiac cruises are a staple of any Antarctic expedition and will get you up close with icebergs, shipwrecks, and wildlife.

Start crossing back over the Drake Passage. Take the opportunity to stand on deck to take in your last glimpses of Antarctica and check off any more wildlife that remains to be seen.

At sea crossing the Drake Passage. The ship's crew will be holding numerous lectures and screenings throughout the day.

You’ll arrive in Ushuaia in the early morning and transfer to the airport for a flight to Buenos Aires, where you’ll spend the night.

La Boca, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Flight home.

La Boca, Buenos Aires

Arrive home today to complete your journey.

Beautiful Santiago

Start your adventure in style

Your trip starts with an overnight stay in Santiago, Chile’s energetic cultural center. Packed with museums, beautiful architecture, and restaurants, the city checks all of the boxes you’d expect of a South American capital. You’ll see that sites and attractions abound, so you’ll only be limited by time, not choice. If you have time, head to the Mercado Central fish market to sample the classic Chilean seafood stew, caldillo de congrio.

With so much on offer, if you feel you need more time to explore the capital of Chile, we recommend coming a few days early, and joining one of our optional Pre-Programmes.

Punta Arenas, Chile’s southern port

Island adventures

You’ll leave Santiago early in the morning and fly to Punta Arenas, the largest city in Chilean Patagonia. This is a place of old world, romantic charm, where discovery lies around every corner. It’s also one of the southernmost cities in the world.

Your expedition ship MS Maud awaits. A mandatory health and safety session will be held for everyone after boarding. Afterward, you will meet some of the crew and the Expedition Team, who will be your guides, hosts, and travel companions.

Rivers of Ice

Be amazed by this natural wonder

Nothing can prepare you for this wild and remote wonderland. Admire the serenity of this maze of waterways, surrounded by islands, glaciers and steep mountains.  If weather and wildlife allow, we will attempt a landing in a tranquil glacial valley.

In a secluded corner of Glacier Alley, the enormous Pia glacier cascades out of the mountains toward the sea, creaking and cracking along the way. This colossal river of ice often calves into the ocean, so keep a lookout for enormous splashes and listen to the mysterious noises the glacier makes.

Beagle Channel, Cape Horn, and the Drake Passage

At the bottom of south america.

If it’s a clear day as we pass through the Beagle Channel, you may be able to see towering Mount Darwin, part of the southernmost range of the Andes mountains.

At the tip of South America lies the legendary Cape Horn. It was a major milestone in the old clipper routes that connected Europe with the Far East and Oceania. Most are unaware of the true extent of its historical significance. This is where the open waters of the Atlantic and Pacific collide, creating powerful waves that are made even stronger by swirling westerly winds.

The notoriously turbulent waters make it impossible to guarantee a landing here. But if conditions are favorable on the day, and the weather is stable enough to dock on the island, you can be among a select few in the world to set foot on it.

From Cape Horn, it’s a clear shot to Antarctica across the Drake Passage. The Passage was named after the English sea captain and privateer Sir Francis Drake, who discovered it by chance in 1578 when heavy winds forced his ship south, proving (unintentionally) that open water existed below the southern tip of Chile.

The Drake Passage is famous for its high winds, large waves, and strong currents. As you can imagine, it was perilous for the old sailing ships who dared to cross it. Even though the waters of the Drake Passage are usually rough, they can also be incredibly still. This dual nature has won the Passage two nicknames: ‘The Drake Shake’ or ‘The Drake Lake’. No matter the state of the sea, our modern MS Maud was built for these conditions and worse, so you don’t have to worry about a thing.

The Seventh Continent

Enjoy an experience like no other

Forget everything you’ve ever experienced before. No matter how high your expectations, Antarctica will exceed them. Holding 90% of the world’s ice in an area twice the size of Australia, it’s massive in every sense of the word. Enormous ice shelves the size of countries and icebergs tower over our ship. Glaciers cascade down through the mountains toward the shore, where they finally meet the sea, sometimes in spectacular displays of calving.

This white continent is home to an estimated 12 million penguins across seven species. Impressive statistics don’t do Antarctica justice, though. Numbers don’t capture its magnitude and magnificence, and words fail to describe the sensation of personally seeing a colony of several thousand penguins. It is a special place that you really have to see to believe.

It will be the height of summer when we arrive in Antarctica, which means towering icebergs glistening in the midnight sun and penguin colonies thronged with hatchlings. You’ll also see many seals, whales, and seabirds. Keep an eye out for skuas, shearwaters, and possibly even albatrosses.

Your Expedition Team will guide you on landings to get you closer to this incredible world of ice and wildlife. We’ll spend seven days exploring the frozen continent with no fixed itinerary, attempting landings at several possible sites. After sailing these waters for so many years, we know the best places to go and what to do. Working with or around the weather and sea ice, we’ll make the most of each day to create a truly authentic adventure.

Voyage back north

Relax and reflect

After seven unforgettable days in Antarctica, MS Maud turns back north and takes you safely back across the Drake Passage. The Expedition Team will recap experiences from the frozen continent and prepare you for our last stop in Chilean Patagonia.

We’ll spend approximately two days crossing the Drake Passage, giving you plenty of time to relax and reflect on what you’ve seen and done. If you’re feeling invigorated after last week’s activities and landings, perhaps work out in the gym. It’s a perfect time to work up an appetite and try some more of the delicious dishes in the restaurants.

patagonia antarctica tour

The beauty of the Chilean fjords

Cruising through paradise

Fresh from our Antarctic experience, and having completed the second Drake Passage crossing, we’ll spend one last day in the Chilean Fjords. Admire the serenity of this maze of waterways, surrounded by islands, glaciers, and steep mountains. If the sea and weather conditions allow, your Expedition Team will attempt a landing.

If not, enjoy the fjords from on deck. You might spot wildlife such as Magellanic penguins and maybe even elephant seals along the coastline. If you’re lucky, you can catch sight of dolphins and several whale species that are known to explore these waters.

The end of your adventure

Arrive back where we started

We arrive back in civilization at Punta Arenas in the morning. From here, you’ll catch a flight back to Santiago de Chile, taking with you fantastic memories from your unforgettable Antarctic adventure.

However, if you’re not ready to end your adventure just yet, we recommend signing up for one of our optional Post-Programs.

These Russian stone carvings date back to 12,000 BC. WHAT??!

patagonia antarctica tour

With its gracious, broad and tree-lined boulevards, well maintained turn of the 19th to 20th century buildings and a lively riverfront, the city of Khabarovsk is often called the most European city in Asia. Nothing in the tranquil city hints of a history that goes beyond the middle of the 19th century, but a short road trip along the Amur River is enough to unfurl a treasure trove of petroglyphs (prehistoric rock carvings) that are believed to date back to 12,000 BC.

Khabarovsk's city center

Khabarovsk's city center

The Khabarovsk Krai, which has about 789,000 square kilometers of territory, is one of the most sparsely populated places on the planet. These vast swathes of emptiness are visible when one drives on the highway that connects Khabarovsk with the industrial city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur.

The Nanai village of Sikachi-Alyan on the Amur River

The Nanai village of Sikachi-Alyan on the Amur River

75 kilometers north of Khabarovsk and just off the highway and on the right bank of the Amur is the Nanai village of Sikachi-Alyan, where the petroglyphs are located. Residents call the village the ‘home of angry spirits’, thanks to the mystical occurrences that many have claimed to witness there.

History on the rocks

The area has about 200 petroglyphs, with a significant number being well preserved. The petroglyphs are easily accessible, as they are near the water’s edge on basalt boulders.

Petroglyphs of Sikachi-Alyan

Petroglyphs of Sikachi-Alyan

The best time to visit the area is actually early or late winter (despite the brutal cold), since the overflowing waters of the Amur hide them in the warmer months. Floods and ice floes have also caused considerable damage to many of the petroglyphs. Locals say some of the boulders have been turned upside down.

The carvings that date from different periods depict hunting scenes, animals, such as elk, horses and mammoths, shamans and shamanic masks and even people sitting in boats.

patagonia antarctica tour

Russia’s Far East is believed to have been one of the last habitats of mammoths before they became extinct. Among the best-preserved petroglyphs of Sikachi-Alyan, there is one engraving that clearly depicts a mammoth, while another shows a mammoth with an unknown creature. There’s also a large depiction of a beast with a tail.

Svetlana Onenko, a local historian who is also the curator of the indigenous people’s ethnographic museum and cultural center in Sikachi-Alyan, says the very existence of the mammoth depictions proves that the petroglyphs date back to around 12,000 BC. She adds that the ancient dwellers of this area probably also hunted mammoths.

The older images, dating to the Paleolithic age, were carved out using stone tools. It should be noted that some archaeologists argue that the wild horses depicted in some of the petroglyphs did not exist in the Amur Region even in the Neolithic age.

patagonia antarctica tour

The newer carvings, including those of shamans and shamanic masks were used with more modern tools. These images are sacred to the Nanai and other indigenous groups who live in the village with a total population of just 300. Onenko says the members of the indigenous community are descended from the people who carved out the petroglyphs. Some European anthropologists, however, believe that the indigenous people were more recent settlers, who moved to the area around 2,000 years ago from Manchuria.

An abode of Shamanism

Neo-Shamanists visit the area from different parts of the world and take part in rituals, which some suspect as being influenced by a cult. Such is the belief in Shamanism in this area that the museum, which has a large number of indigenous artefacts, crafts and ancient Chinese coins, keeps its Shamanic objects in a designated space that is ritually blessed. “Shamanic objects are believed to possess a powerful (and potentially dangerous) energy,” Onenko says.

Locals claim to spot mystic occurrences near the so-called Starukha (Eng.: “old lady”) rock formation. According to indigenous legends, human beings did not die at one point of time, but their population grew so large that there wasn’t enough food for everyone. So the earth’s spirits decided that people, like animals, would also have to die.

The Starukha was apparently the first human being to face death and ended up turning into that big (and apparently haunted) rock.

First Russian visitor

While the Nanai and other indigenous groups were aware of the existence of the petroglyphs for centuries, the outside world came to know of them only in 1859, a year after the foundation of the city of Khabarovsk.

This “discovery” was made by Richard Maack, a geographer, naturalist and explorer who set out on an expedition of the Amur and Ussuri valleys. Maack, who was born in the Russian Empire’s Baltic governorate of Livonia, studied natural sciences at the University of St. Petersburg and undertook several expeditions to Siberia and the Russian Far East in the 1850s.

A portrait of Richard Maack (L); and his drawing of an indigenous people's house

Maack’s main area of interest was botany and six previously unknown plants that he collected by the Amur were named after him. His expedition north of the newly-founded Khabarovsk led him to Sikachi-Alyan, where he spotted the petroglyphs. There are less than a handful of surviving copies of Maack’s book titled, ‘Travel on the Amur river made by order of the Siberian department of the Emperor’s Russian Geographical Society in 1855’, which contains a wealth of information.

Russian archaeologists, scientists and historians took a great interest in the petroglyphs in the 20th century. In the 1930s, archaeologist Nikolai Kharlamov photographed them in detail. Three decades later, ethnographer and historian Alexei Okladnikov went on several expeditions to the area and wrote about the petroglyphs in detail in two books. His findings suggest that the artwork of Sikachi-Alyan had some resemblance to its counterparts from South East Asia, Polynesia and Australia.

The petroglyphs of Sikachi-Alyan are now among the most visited sites in Khabarovsk Krai. The Russian federal government was declared the legal owner of the petroglyphs in 2018 and efforts are underway to better preserve them, as well get the rock formations listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
