Ocean Liners, They Still Exist: Here’s Everything You Need to Know

If you grew up in the wake of James Cameron’s phenomenally successful Titanic film and found yourself sobbing at the doomed relationship of Jack and Rose, you might have wondered (after drying your tears, of course), if Ocean Liners like Titanic still exist.

Luckily for you wannabe Kings and Queens of the world, the answer is Yes.

Do Ocean Liners Still Exist?

Ocean Liners do still exist.

There is only one Ocean Liner still sailing, the RMS Queen Mary 2. She regularly completes Transatlantic voyages between Southampton in the UK to New York City

Other Ocean Liners, like Queen Elizabeth 2, the Original Queen Mary and the SS Rotterdam have found a second life as floating hotels.

ocean liner cruises

Ocean liners have fallen out of favour in recent years due to the increase in cruise ships being built. The experience of sailing on an Ocean Liner is still enjoyed by many people each year though.

It’s important to remember that Ocean Liners and cruise ships are two very different things. They are differ in both design and function.

What Makes a Ship an Ocean Liner?

Many people wrongly assume that just because a ship travels long distances – such as across the Atlantic ocean – they must be Ocean Liners. This isn’t the case.

An Ocean Liner is designed, engineered, and built specifically for the purpose of crossing the ocean on a set schedule – similar to how you would make a scheduled train or a bus journey.

Ocean Liners might boast similar amenities to cruise ships, but the build is quite different.

Fun fact: Ocean liners weren’t originally designed just for carrying people. The RMS in RMS Titanic stands for “Royal Mail Ship”, indicating that the ship held a license for the (lucrative) transport of mail between England and the United States.

How is the Design of an Ocean Liner Different to That of a Cruise Ship?

Difference in bow shape.

Ocean liners feature a longer and more pointed bow. Why? Because they need to be able to travel through bad weather while maintaining a high speed.

ocean liner cruises

Cruise ships frequently try to avoid storms. They often add “Sea Days” or miss ports of call to avoid bad weather.

Ocean Liners are far better designed to be able to deal with bad weather. This is what makes Ocean Liners perfect for crossing long distances such as the Atlantic Ocean.

How The Ships Sit in The Water

An Ocean Liner sits lower in the water than a cruise ship.

Think of the ship’s lower profile and pointed bow as acting as a knife to cut through water and waves, without breaking a sweat.

Ocean Liners can travel at a higher speed than a cruise ship.

The only Ocean Liner currently in service is the Queen Mary 2. She can travel at 30 knots (35 MPH.) Cruise ships normally sail at between 18 and 20 Knots (20 -23 MPH)

Most cruise ships in comparison cruise at between 18 and 20 knots. This is about 20 – 23 miles per hour.

Difference in Hull Thickness

An ocean liner generally has a thicker hull than a cruise ship, in order to be able to better endure the open ocean.

Queen Mary 2 features steel hull plating. It is described as: “Extra thick for rigidity during Atlantic crossings.”

Cruise ships can and do cross the Atlantic and other open oceans, but they aren’t designed to be repeatedly doing this journey after journey.

They are better suited to sailing along the coast, making multiple port stops.

Queen Mary’s hull is actually around twice as thick as that found on most Cruise Ships.

Cruise Ships vs Ocean Liners – Measurable Differences You Need to Know

Why Aren’t Ocean Liners Built Anymore?

They are rarely built anymore because cruise ships provide a higher return on investment than Ocean Liners. The last ocean liner to be built was the Queen Mary 2 in 2003.

There is less demand for Ocean Liners from modern-day travellers when compared to cruise ships.

Modern big cruise ships are increasingly able to do the things that Ocean Liners were built for.

Modern cruise ships now have the ability to cruise long distances and sail through bad weather.

There is no need for Ocean Liners to be built just to transport people across oceans. People rarely emigrate from one continent to another in great numbers by ship, as they once did.

As a result, cruise lines have stopped building Ocean Liners and instead changed to producing cruise ships.

The design of cruise ships has changed dramatically in the last few decades. The average size of cruise ships has increased, and demand for cruising has too .

ocean liner cruises

Cruise ships often have many balcony cabins which give them a less sleek, almost top-heavy appearance.

Cruise lines can make more money selling the more expensive balcony cabins. Their design has changed over the years to fit in as many balcony cabins as possible.

There is Less Interest in Ocean Liners

Cruises on cruise ships (usually) begin and end at the same port. It’s akin to a floating city that tours you around an itinerary and then drops you back off where you started from.

An Ocean Liner is designed to take guests from point A to point B. They run a scheduled service and make few – or no – port stops.

A voyage on an Ocean liner may start in Southampton in the UK, and end in New York City.

To return home, guests need a separate flight or a second voyage. From the perspective of the modern traveller, a cruise is usually simpler and cheaper, than taking a long trip on an ocean liner.

“ Repositioning cruises” are a good option if you want to cruise on a budget. Some of the best and cheapest cruises that I’ve ever been on have been repositioning cruises.

Cruise Ships Are Able to do Repositioning Cruises

Cruise ships are able to sail on repositioning cruises – similar to the journeys that an Ocean Liner would traditionally make.

For this reason, there is no need to keep building Ocean Liners. Cruise ships are far more flexible.

The majority of cruise ships will complete a season in one location – like the Mediterranean for example, then move to another destination – like the Caribbean for the winter months.

It is easier to sell cruises in the Caribbean in the winter where the weather is better. This is where demand is highest and cruise lines can easily fill their cabins.

Find out more about repositioning cruises below:

You Need To Take a Repositioning Cruise – 7 Huge Reasons Why

Flights Are Easily Accessible

With flights becoming cheaper and more accessible, it doesn’t make sense to sail on an Ocean Liner across the ocean, in the same way as it did in the past.

A trip between Southampton and New York typically takes around a week. You can fly to New York in a matter of hours.

Flights are much cheaper and faster, so taking a cruise across the Atlantic or Pacific is usually reserved for those who do so for the Cruise Liner experience, or don’t want to fly.

When Was The Golden Age of Ocean Liners?

If you’re thinking about the Golden Age of Ocean Liners, chances are you’re picturing the Titanic.

A LOT has changed in ship design since the Titanic was constructed. To learn how she compares to the modern Royal Caribbean fleet, check out this post:

Modern Cruise Ships vs The Titanic: Illustrated Size Comparison

Ocean Liners, a Brief History

Robert Fulton, an American inventor, designed and developed the first steam-powered ships in the early 1800s, and it wouldn’t be long before the idea of a steam-powered ship to cross the Atlantic came.

Reliable steamships, unlike those powered by wind-driven sails, which are obviously dependent on the wind, made the prospect of regular ocean crossings accessible, and more importantly, marketable.

A faster crossing meant a ship needed fewer provisions and that meant less weight and less fuel, which meant these companies were able to make a profit from selling ocean voyages.

When Did Ocean Travel on an Ocean Liner Become Accessible to Everyday People?

It still took some time, almost fifty years, for the technology to develop to the point where it was safe for the ship companies and practical for the average traveller.

The paddle wheels that you still see on riverboats in picture books, as well as backup sails, went away, replaced by screw propellers that were safer and more reliable on the open ocean.

Which Companies Starting Building Ocean Liners?

Companies like Cunard and White Star (who would later build Titanic) emerged as England’s top shipbuilders.

Germany, too, who had their own ambitions to surpass England as an ocean power, also began investing money in building Ocean Liners. Each company always wanted to be able to say that they’d built the fastest ship.

The Blue Riband was an accolade awarded for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic by a passenger ship.

To be awarded this was a great advertisement for any company or ship. Passengers would be very keen to book and travel on the fastest ships.

Eventually, by the early years of the 20th century, ship speed had hit a plateau. It became obvious that going too fast above a certain point meant vibrations felt on the ship, which passengers found uncomfortable.

Luxury Travel

This idea of luxury travel led to the creation of the Titanic.

She was meant to be not only fast but to be unparalleled in her onboard accommodation. It was said that her steerage rooms were more well-appointed than other lines’ second classrooms.

She was designed to redefine what an Ocean Liner was and to make White Star Lines arguably the best-known shipping operator in the world.

But, as they sadly found out, even a massive steel ship with numerous safety features can suffer catastrophic damage after colliding with an iceberg. The Titanic sank to the bottom of the icy North Atlantic in 1912.

When Did The Great Ocean Liner Era Come to an End?

Two years after Titanic, the First World War broke out, which put the ocean liner business on hold.

Some ships were repurposed to carry troops, and some of them were sunk by the German Navy.

Combined with the later Great Depression, which was followed by a second, even more, destructive war, and then added to the advent of commercial aviation, the era of the great Ocean Liners came to an end.

Which Ocean Liners Are Still Sailing?

There is one purpose-built Ocean Liner sailing the seas: the RMS Queen Mary 2.

The Queen Mary 2 is owned by Cunard and she regularly completes transatlantic voyages from the UK to the USA and back.

I was lucky enough to take a short cruise on Queen Mary 2, from Southampton to Hamburg and back. Find out all about that memorable trip here:

The Queen Mary 2 has multiple pools and hot tubs, a library with 8,000 books, a buffet restaurant that’s open 24 hours a day, the first-ever planetarium at sea, and numerous other amenities.

Fun fact: the QM2, as it is nicknamed, transported the first copy of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, in a locked steamer trunk, from England to America!

Do Ocean Liners Still Sail Across The Atlantic?

The one remaining ocean liner the Queen Mary 2 regularly completes transatlantic voyages.

She has also completed world cruises and other long trips. She is also used for more traditional cruise itineraries on some occasions.

Best transatlantic cruises for 2024 and 2025, plus tips and what to expect

Donna Heiderstadt

A transatlantic cruise ranks high on many travelers' bucket lists, especially those who love the camaraderie and adventure of a voyage by ship. Today's roughly 4,000-nautical-mile transatlantic crossing is more akin to the pre-aviation "Grand Tour" wealthy Americans once enjoyed than the immigration journeys many of our European ancestors made from the 17th to early 20th centuries.

Leisurely and luxurious, a one-way sailing offers fine dining, wellness-oriented pampering, enlightening lectures, glamorous nightlife and plenty of time to relax. Transatlantic cruises are also a solution for travelers who prefer not to fly and a tempting option for cruise lovers seeking a longer itinerary at an affordable price.

Is a transatlantic cruise right for everyone? Not necessarily, especially for anyone prone to moderate to severe sea sickness. However, for those who love sea days — and many cruisers do — a crossing can offer an uninterrupted "floating resort" experience; plus, it provides the added bonus of delivering you to Europe or returning you home without a cramped transatlantic flight.

Here's everything you need to know about cruising the Atlantic — plus a selection of the best transatlantic cruises you can book in 2024 and 2025.

Which cruise lines offer transatlantic crossings?

ocean liner cruises

While Cunard Line is most famous for its weekly crossings between Southampton, England, and New York City — which sail from April to December on its ocean liner Queen Mary 2 — pretty much every major cruise line offers transatlantic crossings.

These generally occur in the spring (late March to early May) and fall (September to November). In the spring, ships are repositioned from the Caribbean to Europe, and in the fall, vessels sail from Europe to the U.S. to begin Canada-New England and Caribbean itineraries.

Also known as repositioning cruises , these sailings are usually longer than a traditional crossing and often include several port calls beyond the city of embarkation and disembarkation.

Even better, cruise fares for these itineraries are typically one-third to one-half the price of a cruise of the same length that visits a new port daily. This makes them a great deal for travelers looking to settle into shipboard life rather than just sightsee.

These types of transatlantic/repositioning itineraries are offered by Azamara, Carnival, Celebrity, Disney, Holland America, MSC, Norwegian, Oceania, Regent, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Seabourn, Sea Dream Yacht Club, Silversea, Star Clippers, Windstar, Viking and Virgin.

When is the best time of year for transatlantic cruises?

The best time to take a transatlantic cruise depends on what you're looking for: great weather, smooth seas, the best price or specific ports of call.

Generally speaking, May, June and July are recommended for warmer weather and gentler seas — before the Atlantic hurricane season peaks in August, September and October — although storms can arise any time of the year.

March, April and November — while not ideal due to cooler temperatures that can limit on-deck and poolside enjoyment — are a good option and a terrific value. This is especially true if the ship's route is a southerly one between Florida and the Mediterranean rather than between northern Europe and New York.

As noted above, the best prices are generally in spring and fall for repositioning cruises. These itineraries may also visit several appealing ports in the Mediterranean or Caribbean as well as call on the Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands, Iceland or Bermuda in the Atlantic.

How long does the crossing take?

ocean liner cruises

It varies. The classic nonstop transatlantic itinerary aboard Queen Mary 2 is a seven-night voyage between New York and Southampton (and vice versa). On the other hand, transatlantic repositioning cruises generally range in length from 11 to 21 nights, with an average of 14 nights (seven or eight of them typically sea days).

Will the seas be rough?

It's up to Mother Nature. At times, the Atlantic can be smooth sailing, even in spring and fall. Yet unpredictable wind and water current patterns can create rough seas seemingly out of nowhere any time of year.

Captains can generally maneuver around storms — and try to do so whenever possible for the comfort of all onboard. Additionally, modern cruise ships are equipped with stabilizers that reduce a ship's rolling motion due to wind or waves.

However, if you're even slightly prone to seasickness, don't throw caution to the wind. You'll be better off on a larger ship (pick a midship cabin on a lower deck); also, be sure to pack medication, patches, bands or whatever works best for you. While it might seem counterintuitive, having a window or balcony actually helps offset seasickness since it offers fresh air and a horizon view. If you're concerned, opt for an ocean-view or balcony cabin over an inside one.

Which side of the ship is best for a transatlantic crossing?

It honestly doesn't make much difference whether you book a cabin on the port (left) or starboard (right) side of the ship since most daytime views will be of the ocean. However, if you're departing from a Mediterranean port, say Rome or Barcelona, for a southerly crossing, book a starboard cabin; this might offer a view of the Rock of Gibraltar if your ship transits between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic during daylight hours. For a U.S.-to-Europe eastward crossing, you'd want the opposite — a port-side cabin.

Similarly, if your crossing takes you from northern Europe on a northerly route to the U.S., and you want to be among the first to spot land (perhaps Greenland or Newfoundland), book a starboard cabin. If you are cruising into New York Harbor just before dawn and want to see the Statue of Liberty from your cabin, book on the port side.

More important for an Atlantic crossing location-wise is your cabin's deck number and whether the cabin is situated forward, midship or aft. Generally, the ship's movement through rough seas will feel less severe if your cabin is midship and on one of the lower or middle decks versus the top-most decks.

Which ports do transatlantic cruises visit?

ocean liner cruises

Where you embark and disembark will determine your route and the ports you potentially call on. Ships repositioning to or from the Baltic Sea and the British Isles generally take a northerly route. Vessels sailing from the Mediterranean cross on a more southerly route, especially if they are repositioning to or from a winter home port in Florida.

On a northerly crossing, you can expect to embark in a port such as Copenhagen; Rotterdam, Netherlands; Southampton or New York. Depending on the length of the cruise, expect to call on ports in Ireland (Dublin or Cork), Iceland (Reykjavik), Greenland (Qaqortoq or Nuuk), Atlantic Canada (St. John's in Newfoundland, or Sydney or Halifax in Nova Scotia) and Bermuda (King's Wharf).

On a southerly crossing between Barcelona or Rome in the Mediterranean and Miami or Fort Lauderdale, typical ports of call include Madeira; Grand Canary or Tenerife in the Canary Islands; Ponta Delgada in the Azores; and one or two islands in the Caribbean, such as St. Maarten or Puerto Rico.

Is it better to book an eastbound or westbound cruise?

Which direction you book really depends on whether you're aboard for the experience or you're using the crossing as a substitute for a flight to reach the other side of the ocean. Below are a few factors to keep in mind.

Aside from Queen Mary 2 crossings, westbound transatlantic repositioning cruises (from Europe to the U.S.) take place in the fall during the Atlantic hurricane season; some are also scheduled for mid-to-late November when storm formation has generally diminished. Eastbound cruises (from the U.S. to Europe) happen in spring, a season also often known for periods of gray skies and rain.

When considering westbound versus eastbound crossings, factor in the time change. While a transatlantic cruise is a terrific way to avoid the jet lag caused by flying across multiple time zones in a single day, you will be subject to almost daily reminders to reset your clock.

On westbound cruises, you'll have to set your clock back at night, thus gaining an extra hour of sleep on most days. On eastbound cruises, you'll set it ahead an hour and lose an hour of leisure time or sleep.

Another factor to keep in mind is that unless you plan to return home on another transatlantic cruise, you'll also need to book a one-way flight. Before committing to a specific eastbound or westbound itinerary, always check your flight options. One-way tickets are sometimes more expensive than round-trip fares.

Best transatlantic cruises for 2024 and 2025

There are dozens of opportunities to cross the Atlantic by cruise ship, but here are some of the best itineraries available in the next two years.

Cunard's Queen Mary 2

ocean liner cruises

  • Transatlantic crossings: May to December 2024 and 2025

There's nothing quite like it. Cunard 's weekly transatlantic crossing between New York and Southampton aboard the 2,691-guest Queen Mary 2 celebrates the grand age of ocean liners with a level of pomp and ceremony that appeals to Cunard loyalists, bucket-listers and memory-making couples or families celebrating a milestone anniversary or birthday.

These eight-night eastbound and six-night westbound voyages are all about the sea. There are interludes of culinary enjoyment and evening entertainment designed for travelers who appreciate formality and glamour.

A typical day might include time in the library perusing the largest book collection at sea, getting an illuminating astronomy lesson in the onboard planetarium and enjoying traditional afternoon tea.

The evening lineup generally starts with a multicourse dinner (same table and same waiter nightly) followed by a Broadway-inspired show, an abridged Shakespeare play or even a magic act. The ship is also famous for its Gala Evenings, capped off with Champagne sipping and dancing to a live orchestra. Yes, pack those ballgowns and tuxes.

Cruise fares start at $1,129 per person for an inside cabin and $1,619 per person for a balcony room.

Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady

ocean liner cruises

  • 16-night Rome to Miami: Nov. 28-Dec. 14, 2024
  • 15-night Miami to Casablanca and Barcelona cruises: May 3-18, 2025

Virgin Voyages ' 2,770-guest Scarlet Lady has an onboard ambience that rivals a youthful beach club. Passengers and crew will keep the party going day and night this fall on a 16-night Rome to Miami transatlantic sailing. The sailing has calls on Barcelona and Malaga in Spain; Funchal on the island of Madeira; and Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands.

Or, party in reverse on the ship's 15-night Miami to Casablanca and Barcelona crossing in May 2025. It stops in Grand Canary and Santa Cruz de Tenerife; Casablanca, Morocco; and Barcelona.

The ship's 20 excellent dining venues, cutting-edge entertainment (campy and a bit naughty — think Drag Queen Bingo), impressive lineup of wellness classes (from yoga at sunrise to On-the-Upswing Bungee aerobics) and fun activities ('90s Boy Band Dance Class, anyone?) provide plenty of ways to pass the time.

Cruise fares start at $4,384 per cabin (or less than $2,200 per person) for the Rome-to-Miami sailing and $3,706 per cabin (or less than $1,900 per person) for the Miami-to-Barcelona sailing.

Disney Cruise Line's Disney Dream

ocean liner cruises

  • 13-night eastbound transatlantic cruise: May 5-18, 2024
  • 13-night westbound transatlantic cruise: Oct. 20-Nov. 2, 2024

Certain Disney fans — namely childless adult couples and empty nesters — love the brand's storytelling and Imagineering but prefer not to share a two-week cruise with hundreds of kids and teens. These 13-night eastbound and westbound crossings from Fort Lauderdale to Barcelona and from Southampton to Fort Lauderdale aboard 2,500-passenger Disney Dream offer a solution to that dilemma.

Each of these transatlantic cruises occurs when almost everyone ages 5 to 18 is still in school. Yes, some kids will likely be on board, but certainly not in overwhelming numbers.

These crossings feature nine to 11 sea days during which Disney Cruise Line offers all kinds of immersive entertainment, excellent onboard dining and a southerly route in spring that means plenty of pool time. On top of that, each sailing includes a mix of culturally rich ports.

On the eastbound crossing, they are Ponta Delgada; Lisbon; and Cadiz, Cartagena and Barcelona, Spain. On the westbound crossing, the ports are Ponta Delgada and the new Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.

Eastbound fares for balcony cabins start at $4,516 for two adults (or about $2,258 per person). Westbound fares are a bit pricier, starting at $5,517 for an inside cabin ($2,708 per person).

The voyage takes place in November, so expect temperatures to be on the cooler side in most ports and during the crossing. It's a good thing, then, that Nieuw Statendam has an indoor pool with a retractable roof. Holland America passengers, mostly older retirees, can also pass the time dining at each of the 10 onboard restaurants and enjoy entertainment that includes live bands at the B.B. King's Blues Club and Rolling Stone Rock Room.

At $2,499 per person for an inside cabin and $3,749 per person for a balcony cabin, fares are a great deal for a four-week sailing.

Even better, per-night rates are typically lower on crossings than on round-trip, port-intensive cruises. So, you can enjoy a longer sailing at a fraction of the usual cost. No matter which transatlantic cruise you deem best for your travel style and interests, it will surely be a memorable bucket-list trip.

Queen Elizabeth Overview

A cruise on the Queen Elizabeth , one of Cunard’s three ocean liners, is a chance to step back into the glamorous hey-day of cruising. Passengers can delight in the fabulously British touches of afternoon tea, a game of croquet and a formal royal ball. Queen Elizabeth also has lots of modern features, including a state-of-the-art Computer Centre, relaxing whirlpools and karaoke, for some fun at night. Cunard is also known for its cuisine - we recommend the Lobster Newberg at the Queens Grille and the decadent Cambridge Burnt Cream Tart at the Britannia Restaurant.

Plan your dream vacation with the 10 best ocean cruise lines of 2024

USA TODAY 10Best Readers' Choice Awards logo

Best Ocean Cruise Line (2024) February 16, 2024

Thankfully, cruise lines are not one size fits all. Some offer long days at sea, while others provide ample time in diverse ports of call. Some offer mega-ships packed with entertainment, and others are more intimate yachts. Whatever your preference, there's a cruise line out there for you. And these 10 ocean cruise lines — selected by a panel of cruise experts and voted as the best by readers — are clear winners.

Royal Caribbean International

No. 10: Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean International designed its fleet with the active cruiser in mind. Sure, you can laze away sea days on a deck lounger or in the ship library, but you can also go rock climbing, skydiving, zip lining, surfing, ice skating, or bowling — all at sea. Royal Caribbean operates the five largest ships in the world, with Wonder of the Seas leading the pack.

Norwegian Cruise Line

No. 9: Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line set itself apart by pioneering the concept of "freestyle" cruising, where passengers are free to do — and more importantly eat — what they want, when they want. The line takes entertainment seriously, and there's a bit of something for everyone: Broadway productions, stand-up comedy, live DJs, and piano bars. Some ships offer solo passenger cabins as well as adjoining cabins for families.

Cunard

No. 8: Cunard

Cunard's four luxury vessels draw inspiration from the golden age of elegant ocean liners, and it's one of the best for making transatlantic crossings. Entertainment options abound, with plenty to fill the hours of days at sea. There's an Old World formality to it all, including restaurant assignments based on cabin class, but service is standout all around.

Azamara

No. 7: Azamara

Azamara’s boutique ships carry a maximum of 690 guests, and a focus on longer stays, night touring, and more overnights mean those guests have more time to immerse themselves in the various ports of call. Inclusive amenities include AzAmazing Celebrations events, select alcoholic beverages, gratuities, self-service laundry, concierge services, and shuttles to and from port communities.

Holland America Line

No. 6: Holland America Line

Holland America Line offers guests enriching journeys in distinctively classic cruise style, connecting them to the most fascinating people, places, and cultures on Earth. Itineraries span the globe with more than 400 ports of call and more than 500 carefully crafted itineraries. With elegant fine dining and gracious service, Holland America Line’s mid-sized ships welcome guests to discover timeless cruising, refined for a new generation.

Princess Cruises

No. 5: Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises' line of large and mega-sized ships sail nearly everywhere big ships can go, and they do so with traditional style and innovative touches. Adults-only deck areas and poolside movie screens were largely Princess innovations, and the fleet's atriums (called Piazzas) drove the idea of an atrium gathering place, filled with dining and drinking options.

Crystal Cruises

No. 4: Crystal Cruises

A journey aboard the Crystal Symphony or Crystal Serenity promises not just luxury but elegance — a throwback to a more stylish era of travel by sea. Not that the experience is even slightly old-fashioned: dining options include the only at-sea outlet of the trendy Asian eatery Nobu, for example, and onshore excursions are curated by Abercrombie & Kent. Itineraries literally span the globe, with sailings in both North and South America as well as the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, the Indian Ocean, Australia and New Zealand, and Asia.

Windstar Cruises

No. 3: Windstar Cruises

Operating a fleet of small luxury ships, Windstar Cruises offers passengers a unique, luxury experience when sailing the globe. Service and accommodations are first-rate, emulating the comforts of a private yacht. And special themed cruises allow guests access to more exclusive destinations, among some 150 ports of call around the world.

Viking Ocean Cruises

No. 2: Viking Ocean Cruises

Viking made its name as a river cruise line and brings a destination-centric mentality to its ocean cruises as well, with ships right-sized to access such interesting destinations as the fjords of Norway, England's Thames River to London, and beyond. Through partnerships with top cultural icons like the BBC and resident historians, Viking offers an unparalleled mix of onboard educational opportunities and onshore guidance for a deep dive into local cultures.

Carnival Cruise Line

No. 1: Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Cruise Line caters to families and casual cruisers with its fleet of "Fun Ships." On these large cruises, passengers have no excuse to feel bored; ships come equipped with water parks, glitzy casinos, live entertainment, and a focus on diverse, casual dining, highlighted by a partnership with celebrity chef Guy Fieri to bring Guy's Burger Joint to the fleet. All of this comes at affordable price points.

An Ocean Liner cruise – how it differs to a cruise ship

How an Ocean Liner differs to a regular cruise ship

A cruise on board a ship is a vacation sailing not that far from the shore and calling from port to port. An ocean liner cruise is a grand voyage – a crossing from point A to point B over vast open waters. Think of endless horizons, misty mornings, and bright moons. The whole idea of a journey on an ocean liner is poetic.

There can come a time when, after many memorable vacations with your favorite cruise line, you may want a change. Even after sailing on the biggest, fastest, and most modern cruise ships, you may find yourself looking for something different.

And for everyone who loves the concept of a cruise vacation, there is an ocean liner that will give you a whole new transatlantic crossing experience.

It gives you a different type of vacation, much like switching from cruise ships to ultra-luxury cruise ships. One that is equally as fantastic. And perhaps even more thrilling.

Quick navigation

What is the difference between an ocean liner and a cruise ship?

It’s all in the design. Modern cruise ships are designed to cruise relatively close to the shore between ports of call. In contrast, an ocean liner’s sleek design, robust hull, pointed bow, and high freeboard are designed to transport passengers over the high ocean waves, especially in bad weather and rough seas.

Ocean liners also have an enormous capacity to store fuel, food, and other necessities needed on a long voyage. And while there are modern cruise lines that make transatlantic crossings – repositioning cruises – cruise ships rely on coming into ports of call to replenish their supplies.

Much like floating hotels, these leisurely voyages get you across long distances in style.

Which cruise line offers a cruise on an ocean liner?

RMS Queen Mary 2 is the only ocean liner at sea. As the flagship of the Cunard line, which is part of maritime history, it regularly sails between Southampton, Southern England, and New York. It also offers a world cruise each year.

Queen Mary 2 has a capacity for around 2600 guests. And Cunard has long been associated with British elegance and style. And you will find this reflected in the design and decor on board. This ocean liner is excellent for singles, couples, and families.

Facilities on board are those you would expect from a modern ocean liner, offering everything from a library to a planetarium, wine experiences to afternoon teas, and children’s activities to sports events. And then there are the legendary gala evenings.

What can I expect on board the RMS Queen Mary 2 ocean liner?

As you cross the Atlantic Ocean, the Queen Mary 2 passenger ship and its sister ship Queen Elizabeth is a very different experience from most cruise ships.

Most transatlantic voyages are seven nights without any port stops. Intercontinental travel gives you many days at sea. In the summer, you will most often have tranquil, calm waters. But things can change on the high seas. If you think you will suffer from seasickness on the open ocean, pack the remedy that works best for you.

For dining, you will mostly be in one of the main dining rooms for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Menus are varied, all of a high standard, and served in elegant surroundings. You won’t be disappointed.

The dress code is smart to formal every evening. During the day, however, casual attire, the same as on any other cruise line, is accepted. Most of today’s cruise ships are very relaxed regarding dress codes, but Cunard is more formal. If you do not enjoy this onboard experience, this may not be the cruise for you.

And Cunard still has the traditional gala evening on board, which is very popular with guests. So pack your finest and join in this formel, fun evening.

There are music, dance, theater, and broadway-style productions on board. Be entertained all day by performers, singers, musicians, acrobats, and stand-up comedians.

Ballroom dancing lessons and quiz events are common, and there is always a packed itinerary of activities to keep you occupied each day. Alternatively, many guests use the week to switch off entirely and relax in one of the many lounges and quiet areas around the ship.

Known as being more adult-orientated, Cunard does, however, have good facilities for children. Various play zones and children’s clubs keep the younger family members entertained. All this is included in the price of your cruise.

There are many ways to enjoy sporting events on board. There is table tennis, paddle tennis, golf putting, and a pool area. And if you want to catch your favorite sport on TV, you can also see major sporting events. Tune into the Premier League, Formula 1, Wimbledon tennis, or the Ryder Cup for golf fans.

What is the route of the ocean liner RMS Queen Mary 2?

Best known for her Eastbound and Westbound transatlantic route between Southampton and New York , The Queen Mary 2 offers a 7-night crossing each month.

There is also an extension of the westbound trip from Southampton to New York – you can continue to Fort Lauderdale in Florida for three more nights.

For a more extended cruise, choose 2, 3, or 4 weeks and sail from New York to the Caribbean. The itinerary includes St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Curaçao, and Barbados.

One-week cruises to the beautiful Norwegian Fjords are also available. And shorter trips to France and Germany also depart from Cunard’s home port, Southampton.

What is included in the price on board Queen Mary 2?

Included in your price when booking a cruise on this grand ocean liner is:

  • Your accommodation in your chosen cabin choice
  • All of your dining, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You eat in the main dining room, the Golden Lion Pub, the King’s Court, or the Lido.
  • Join in entertainment onboard – guest speakers, daily activities, and sports events. There is also a library for children in the kids club to enjoy.

Ponant has a fleet of 13 luxury cruise ships with destinations dotting the globe. The award-winning French cruise line is beloved for its tailor-made voyages, in which guests have access to myriad bespoke experiences both on and off board, from in-room dining to once-in-a-lifetime immersive excursions.

Since Ponant ships offer smaller capacity—more akin to a private yacht experience—they’re able to navigate private ports and preserved locations that large-scale cruise ships are unable to access. While aboard Ponant’s all-inclusive ships, you can anticipate exceptional French cuisine, delicious fine wines, complimentary Champagne and spirits, room service, and more.

Of course, if you need further inspiration to look into the cruise line, perhaps the fact that three-mast yacht, Le Ponant, is part of the Relais & Châteaux portfolio will do the trick.

The Ritz-Carlton is synonymous with luxury, so it’s no surprise that the company extended into oceanic adventures with a fleet of three superyachts. Where the Evrima was built in 2021, the Ilma and Luminara yachts are forthcoming in 2024 and 2025.

While classic cruise lines have a capacity in the thousands, often edging upward of 4,000, the Ritz-Carlton superyachts offer a more curated experience to 500 passengers or less. From the outside, the yachts are sleek and serene, fitting in beautifully with the sea. Within Evrima’s walls, though, moody modern interiors with magnificent ocean views await.

Guests can look forward to soaking tubs, expansive private balconies complete with sun beds and a whirlpool, walk-in wardrobes, and more. As far as destinations are concerned, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection embarks on oceanic adventures in the Mediterranean and Caribbean.

This board might be of some help http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=192

The board does not list Moscow but does list St. Petersburg and is for people cruising Northern Europe and the Baltics.

I imagine your best bet would be a river cruise. Check out Avalon, Viking etc.

Thanks just starting my search :-)

We've done some cruises that called at St Petersburg that offered a day's excursion to Moscow. It left VERY early in the AM, you flew, it was pricy, and folks said it was tiring. A day in Moscow is not enough to see and appreciate the city, and unless you've been to St Petersburg several times, you miss all there is to see there. Most folks who've done it that i've talked to would not recommend the Moscow excursion if you're taking a ocean liner cruise calling at St Petersburg, but you're on a river cruise whereby you get to spend 3 or 4 days in Moscow......yes.

paul929207

We took a river cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg. It was a six day cruise plus four days on either end. Still did not have enough time.

Keith1010

I would look at a river cruise as well.

500+ Club

You mention northern Europe so I assume you are interested in a sea cruise which would be on the Baltic Sea. Moscow is far inland, no sea cruises. As mentioned, excursions to Moscow are offered on the 2 day stops in St. Petersburg, but I wouldn't recommend it. I would suggest that a tour of Moscow would require a land visit or a river cruise. Both will require a visa which is waived for licensed tour group in St. Petersburg.

We just returned from a Vantage river cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg. We spent 3 day in a hotel in Moscow before getting on the ship. The story and pictures are on our website.

We are always happy to answer any questions.

Thanks everyone for your help. Thanks also to Steve and Kathy ! soo much information very helpful :)

Tiggertastic

river cruises or most of the cruises that go to st petersburg for 2 nights do an excursion upto moscow - they fly you up there and stay overnight and fly back

celebrity and NCL both did it when we did the baltics with them

A fabergé egg and a crystal forest – inside regent’s absurdly luxe new cruise ship.

Compass Rose restaurant is designed like a jewelled enchanted rainforest

A royal palace, a grand museum, a billionaire’s home... these are all places you might expect to see a Fabergé ‘egg’. A cruise ship is not one. But this is just one example of the sheer luxury that’s awaiting guests onboard the aptly-named Seven Seas Grandeur , the new luxury liner from Regent Seven Seas Cruise .

When building the ship, developers spared no expensive in the pursuit of decadence, installing over 308,647 lbs of marble, 503 crystal chandeliers and an art collection that cost an eye-watering costing $6 million. Onboard, art enthusiasts can discover 1,600 pieces of fine art including three Picassos – “Toros y Toreros”, “Antes de picar al toro” and “Picador picando al toro, con matador al quite” – displayed at specialty restaurant steakhouse Prime 7.

Another highlight is a nearly 40-foot-tall hand-woven tapestry by Walter Goldfarb titled “The Enchanted Tree” which extends through the center of the ship – take the glass elevator from level four to 12 to view the piece in all its magnificence. Myriad sculptures can also be found throughout, such as Zheng Lu’s “Water in Dripping – Waterfall”, positioned at the bottom of the staircase in the spa and wellness center.

The bespoke hand-crafted Fabergé x Regent Seven Seas Cruises 'Egg Objet' is named 'Journey in ... [+] Jewels'

The jewel in the art collection’s crown is the Fabergé ‘Egg Objet’, named “Journey in Jewels”, on display in the atrium. The bespoke piece was created to depict the Regent Seven Seas sailing experience and features a ‘sea spray’ of pearls, a cascading ‘waterfall’ of ocean hues, and a seven-blade ‘shell’ that represents the world’s seven seas.

Other special commissions include a delicate, life-size cherry blossom tree artwork exclusively created by Savoy Studios for the entrance of pan-Asian restaurant Pacific Rim. Look closely at the blossoms which were all hand cast from Murano glass in Venice, Italy. With so much to discover, guests can take a guided, digital art tour via the Regent App.

A tree artwork at the entrance of Pacific Rim restaurant is decorated in 'blossoms' made from Murano ... [+] glass

The opulence continues in the ship’s kitchens. For a 10-night voyage, Seven Seas Grandeur carries some 1,200 lbs of lobster, 1,000 lbs of filet mignon, 500 lbs of smoked salmon, 500 lbs of chocolate and 20 lbs of caviar. For the same period of time, the wine cellar stores 1,500 bottles of champagne and 5,000 bottles of wine, made up of 65 white varieties of wine, 130 red, five rose, six dessert and 18 varieties of champagne and sparkling wine. The most expensive bottle is a $2,500 Promontory Napa Valley wine.

Regent’s much-loved restaurant concepts have been brought over from the fleet’s other ships but guests onboard Grandeur can sample 130 new dishes and enhanced recipes, as well as reimagined spaces that give the venues an even more luxurious edge. At Compass Rose, for instance, guests enter via a cascading waterfall into an ‘enchanted forest’ featuring bejewelled, illuminated ‘trees’. In the windows, lights are positioned to emulate the night’s sky, while tables are finished with custom Versace plates.

French restaurant Chartreuse is designed in the style of 1920s Paris – look out for the elegant carvings depicting La Camellia, Coco Chanel’s favourite flower, in the entrance. There’s also a few secrets onboard Grandeur – hidden inside Prime 7, for instance, there’s a secret private dining room that’s only accessible to guests of the ship’s top suite, the Regent Suite (costing around $11,000 per night).

The interior of Pacific Rim is equally elegant

Other fresh features include an enhanced spa and wellness center with a new outdoor spa area on the aft. The infinity pool seen on Splendor has been replaced by a closed heated pool, two hot tubs and additional loungers accommodating more guests. A glass window shields this area from the wind, meaning it can be used while underway, and seems safer and more private when in port. The spa menu also offers a few Grandeur-exclusive treatments including a zero-gravity massage.

The ship’s 375 suites are similar to those seen on previous vessels – all come with comfortable bedrooms, living spaces, walk-in-wardrobes, en-suite bathrooms and balconies – although some layouts have been tweaked and the decor throughout has been updated into a more classic style of elegance.

Likewise, the all-inclusive guest experience that Regent is famous for remains as expected, with enthusiastic crew putting on a full calendar of onboard entertainment and off-shore excursions. In fact, when coupled with the ship’s elevated amenities and refined design, I’m told by numerous long-term Regent guests that this is the company’s “best ship ever”.

The Grandeur Suite features large living spaces

Seven Seas Grandeur has been dubbed the ‘most luxurious ship ever built’ – and . The whole construction cost over US$450 million, which is easy to understand when you look at the finer details. But as with most things in life, it needs to be seen to be believed.

Seven Seas Grandeur is said to be Regent's most luxurious ship yet

The 5 Best Midsize-ship Ocean Cruise Lines in 2022

The best cruise lines for midsize ships, according to Travel + Leisure readers, strike a balance between big-time amenities and smaller crowds.

ocean liner cruises

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite midsize-ship ocean cruise lines .

Travelers have been eager to return to the seas, and many were particularly interested in sailing on vessels that achieved the delicate balance between big-time amenities and smaller capacities. Enter the cruise lines in the newly tweaked midsize-ship ocean category, which now includes ships with 300 to 799 cabins.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated individual cruise ships on their cabins and facilities, food, service, itineraries and destinations, excursions and activities, and value. Those assessments were combined to generate results for the cruise lines in six categories, including river cruising.

In second place is Seabourn, with its pair of 300-suite ships: the Encore and Ovation . (Seabourn's smaller vessels are recognized in the World's Best Awards small-ship category for 2022.) "Blown away by how nice the ship, food, and service were," said a reader who sailed on Encore.

Highly applauded as well, and in the No. 3 spot for 2022, is Silversea, in this category with its largest ship, the Silver Spirit . "There is a feeling of spaciousness in the ship layout," wrote one fan. "You can always find a place to tuck away and read or enjoy a private conversation."

In the No. 4 spot is luxury line Regent Seven Seas Cruises, noted by one T+L reader for having "above excellent" crew. Rounding out the top 5 is Regent's sister line, Oceania Cruises, which was praised for its cuisine. "Best food on the ocean and great variety," said one fan.

But it was Viking that stole the show among the best cruise lines for midsize ships. Read on for more about what makes the line so popular.

T+L readers rave about the consistency of Viking's vessels and their Scandinavian design. The ships have plenty of nooks and crannies that encourage socializing. Guests can indulge in afternoon tea in the Wintergarden or listen to a lecture by a historian in the theater. Adding oomph is the line's value proposition, with wine and beer at meals, shore excursions, and specialty dining all included in the cruise fare. "What you see is what you get," wrote one reader. "Straightforward, consistently high quality and value at every turn."

Hot rides on the inland seas: Great Lakes cruises gaining steam, stoking enthusiasm

In many ways, these luxury Great Lakes cruise liners are the antithesis of traditional ocean-going vessels. Instead of sun-splashed Caribbean beaches, travelers can expect stops at such cities as Mackinac Island, seen here, Detroit, Marquette, Muskegon, Toronto, Milwaukee and Duluth, Minn.

A trip to Mackinac Island has long been a quintessential summer vacation. This year, thousands of travelers are opting for a luxurious way to get there: aboard a Great Lakes cruise liner.

"We had a wonderful time in Mackinac," said Rusty Davis, a California native who visited Michigan for the first time aboard Viking's Niagara & the Great Lakes cruise with his wife, Kathy. Davis and his wife are just two of thousands of travelers who will embark on a journey this summer to sail the Midwest's inland seas.

Just as the Great Lakes might not be the most typical cruise destination, the ships don't offer a typical experience either, Davis explained: "These boats are not party boats. They’re designed for older people, education, enlightenment and exploring places you’ve never been."

In recent years, ships such as Viking's Polaris have turned the Great Lakes into one of the most popular spots for cruising. The Great Lakes will see fewer cruise ships this year, but industry officials say that's a blip in an otherwise upward trendline.

Cruise the Great Lakes, a regional program that promotes the industry, projects ships between May and September that will carry 20,000 passengers and make 600 port visits. Michigan alone will welcome 157 visits from nine cruise ships, according to Kelly Wolgamott, director of marketing for Pure Michigan.

Last year, there were 800 regional port visits, according to Cruise the Great Lakes. The overall decline is largely because one cruise line, American Queen Voyages, shut down in February, taking two ships out of service on the lakes this year. However, Victory Cruise Lines bought the 190-passenger vessels, Victory I and Victory II, and plans to put them back into service next year, the company said in a statement.

"We are excited to return to the Great Lakes in April 2025," said John Waggoner, CEO of Victory Cruise Lines.

Anna Tanski, tourism director of Cruise the Great Lakes, points to long-term growth in the sector: “In just a decade, the number of cruise passengers has more than doubled." The organization projects $200 million in regional economic impact this year, a nearly 50% increase from 2022.

Six cruise lines are operating on the Great Lakes this year (Pearl Seas Cruises, Viking Cruises, St. Lawrence Cruise Lines, Ponant, Hapag-Lloyd and Plantours Cruises), and some are adding new itineraries and port stops. Each of these cruise lines has its own specialty: Viking is geared towards the more adventurous traveler with its expedition ships, and Pearl Seas boasts private balconies for every room. Meanwhile, French-based Ponant and German Hapag-Lloyd serve European travelers.

Even for longtime Michiganians, Great Lakes cruises can be eye-opening. Michael Matti, 54, a former teacher in Stevensville, had been on five previous cruises, including to Antarctica, before traveling aboard the Octantis in 2022.

"I've been to Mackinac, I don't know how many times in my lifetime, but when I went on a tour, I learned many things I didn't know," he said. "It just gave me a very different perspective of my home state."

In many ways, these luxury Great Lakes cruise liners are the antithesis of traditional ocean-going vessels. Instead of sun-splashed Caribbean beaches, travelers can expect stops at such cities as Detroit, Marquette, Muskegon, Toronto, Milwaukee and Duluth, Minn.

Instead of a hulking ship with a towering water slide on the top deck, picture something much smaller: most Great Lakes cruisers are (relatively) petite, typically accommodating 250 or fewer passengers. By comparison, Princess Cruise's Royal Princess ship can hold up to 3,560 guests.

And instead of casinos, shops and live shows, Great Lakes cruise ships offer lower-key experiences such as scientific lectures and performances by local musicians. Pearl Mist is one such luxury ship: a comparatively intimate vessel that can accommodate 210 guests.

The voyage isn't cheap: Prices for a 15-night trip across all five Great Lakes aboard the Pearl Mist start at $10,830.  By comparison, a 14-night Caribbean cruise to the Panama Canal and the western Caribbean on Royal Caribbean's Serenade of the Seas costs an average of $1,638.

Rather than a family of four looking for an indulgent tropical getaway, Great Lakes cruises tend to attract a much different clientele: educated, older and well-traveled. “They’ve been to the Caribbean. They’ve been to Alaska. They’ve been to the Mediterranean," said Mark Schrupp, executive director of the Detroit/Wayne County Port Authority. "The Great Lakes is the next frontier for people who really enjoy cruising.”

Detroit draws cruise ships

Detroit has seen an increase in port visits over the past few years, with 52 dockings in 2022 and 62 in 2023, though just 40 are scheduled this year because American Queen Voyages shut down, Shrupp said.

"The Great Lakes in 2025 should promise to be another banner year for us," said John Jamian, director of operations of Detroit's port authority.

Detroit's efforts to woo more cruise ships have included spending half a million dollars on an extra bollard to upgrade the port authority's dock near the Renaissance Center. The goal is to accommodate longer ships like Viking's Octantis, a vessel more than 650 feet long that stopped at a longer, privately owned dock in 2022.

Tourist organizations like Visit Detroit roll out the red carpet for cruise passengers. As soon as they dock, they're greeted with local entertainment, local guides and Motown music, said Jennifer Ollinger, tourism manager of Visit Detroit: "We have the infrastructure; we just need to convince them to come. Once they get here, they're like, wow, there's a lot to see and do."

High-profile development projects like the Hudson's site and the recently reopened Michigan Central Station help with that. So do the record-breaking crowds who poured into Detroit for the nationally televised NFL Draft in late April.

Davis, the Viking passenger from California, disembarked in Detroit this month and was pleasantly surprised. "I was not aware of all the different things there were in the downtown area and all that had been revitalized," he said. "It was very clean."

While ashore, Davis particularly enjoyed touring Ford Motor Co.'s Rouge Center in Dearborn: "We watched the crews build F-150s, it was so fascinating ... we were there so long they had to come looking for us to go back on the ship."

Davis added that "Mackinac Island, Niagara Falls, and the Ford Rouge Center have been the highlights of the trip."

Betsy Ristroph, 78, a retired librarian from Georgia, docked in Detroit last July on Viking's Niagara & the Great Lakes cruise and had a similar reaction. "My previous impression was that all the industry left, and there had been riots long ago. I had very bleak impressions. But it feels to me now they had revitalized the downtown and kept their sports teams," she said. "I have a positive impression of Detroit now."

While in Detroit, Ristroph particularly enjoyed touring the Rouge Center: "I've seen enough museums in my life … but I found the plant fascinating."

Not only do such travelers witness Detroit’s revitalization, but they also play a vital role in it. In 2023, the 14,000 passengers who visited Detroit generated $1.5 million of direct economic impact, according to Cruise the Great Lakes.

Other Michigan cities are looking to get in on the action. Bay City is working to identify the best locations to start welcoming cruise ships on the Saginaw River. "We've been looking to get into the cruise ship industry for years now," said Annette Rummel, CEO of Great Lakes Bay Regional Convention & Visitors Bureau, an organization that oversees Bay City tourism.

Muskegon, already a port of call on many cruise itineraries, is also looking to add a second dock to accommodate more Great Lakes cruise ships, according to Robert Lukens, Community Development Director of the port of Muskegon. Other Michigan ports receiving cruise ships this year include Mackinac Island, Sault Ste. Marie, Traverse City, Alpena and Escanaba.

Science instead of shows

Another major draw for cruisers is the natural beauty of Michigan's Great Lakes coasts, ranging from boreal forests in Thunder Bay to sandstone cliffs in Marquette to the golden autumnal coastline off Sault Ste. Marie.

“For many of these travelers, it’s their first time in Michigan,” Wolgamott said. “One thing that always surprises travelers when they come is how big the Great Lakes are. They get to discover the beauty of our 3,200 miles of freshwater coastline and quaint coastal towns.”

Great Lakes cruises seek to give passengers a deeper understanding of the flora and fauna unique to the region. Viking's ships are particularly science-oriented. Both the Octantis and Polaris have scientists on board conducting research in the Great Lakes as well as a science lab where passengers can complete weather samples or launch weather balloons.

"You wouldn't expect how interesting the scientific information is," said Doris Colgate, in her early 80s, who traveled aboard the Octantis in 2022. As a sailor and owner of a sailing company, Colgate is an explorer at heart. But compared to exploring on her own, Colgate appreciated the expert guidance the Octantis offered: "I loved being at anchor in a remote area and seeing all the birds come in. Then an ornithologist would explain the various birds indigenous to the area."

As an expedition ship, the Octantis also offers plenty of opportunities for active exploration. "There were some very active people who kayaked all day long. It’s a great cruise for younger people or fit older people," said Colgate.

With this type of programming, Viking has a no-children policy, limiting guests to 18 years and older. However, other Great Lakes cruise lines have a more flexible policy on children. In addition to scientists, Viking has visiting lecturers on board, while Pearl Seas guests can end the evening conversing with naturalists or local historians. "It's not going on a cruise ship and seeing a casino or big show, but it's much more down to earth: lectures and local musicians," Matti said. Such an environment makes a great place to build friendships with like-minded individuals who may prefer cultural enrichment over pizzazz. "That's one of the things we love," Matti said. "People are so open and conversational. You have that opportunity at night to listen to music and have a drink."

Matti also made friends with crew members — some of whom he still follows on Facebook. Compared to ocean-going vessels, many Great Lakes cruises have crew-to-passenger ratios close to 1:1. "We had room stewards who knew us by name on day one ... they are very, very attentive."

Amenities on these ships reflect the high price tag. On board, nearly everything is included: from alcohol to off-shore activities, though there are add-on options for some stops. There's attention to detail down to the bookshelves — on the Octantis, all the books were related to Great Lakes expeditions. More than the unique programming or entertainment, Matti said it's comfort and service like this that would make him go again.

“Veterans of the cruise industry want to see different things than what they’re seeing all the time — like the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame or the Navy Pier in Chicago," said David Gutheil, chief commercial officer of the port of Cleveland. "There’s a lot more differentiation among the Great Lakes cruise ship destinations compared to what you’d see cruising in other parts of the world.”
