Based on the review here, we booked on the Sonesta Moon Goddess March, 2023. We were disappointed. The rooms were indeed classic and comfortable. The carpets in the hall were old and stained. The HVAC systems in the room did not work properly despite engineering’s best efforts. Hot water was often hard to come by. The most disappointing element was the food. This was served buffet style, and almost never maintained hot. It was as if I had returned to my high school cafeteria. The staff were attentive and tried to please.

The review above does not reflect on the current state of affairs.

The 10 best Nile cruises for 2024

Egypt’s is one of the greatest stories ever told, and untold. It’s more than a century since British archaeologist Howard Carter discovered Tutankhamun’s tomb; yet Egypt’s narrative continues to unfold. 

The latest find was in January this year at Saqqara, near Cairo, where archaeologists uncovered a rock tomb believed to be 4,500 years old. Located on the Nile’s west bank, Saqqara’s necropolis served as a royal burial ground for the ancient Egyptian capital, Memphis. Last year embalming workshops were found here and archaeologists have also unearthed a granite sarcophagus from the reign of King Ramses II (1279 to 1213 BC) along with hundreds of mummies encased in painted sarcophagi. Among the cache of goods being taken to the afterlife was an intact papyrus scroll.

There will be plenty of grave possessions on display at the Grand Egyptian Museum when it finally opens in its new location at Giza. Alongside 10,000 ancient artefacts the museum will hold King Tut’s entire tomb trove of 5,000 objects. The latest estimation for the opening is mid-2024 – with any luck some cruise passengers will be among the first to visit the museum complex this winter. 

Cairo’s pyramids and museum treasures are a prelude for the main event, however. Strung along the Nile are temples, royal tombs, colossal statues, mausoleums, island monuments and ancient inscripted chambers that stop time. Best for: Old-school romance

Before the arrival of steam-powered boats, visitors would cruise the Nile on small, two-masted dahabiya, led by a “houseboat crew”. La Flaneuse du Nil recreates that slow-travel tradition with style – and hot water and flushing loos to boot. Sehr gut organisiert. Zu jedem Zeitpunkt war klar was erkundet wird und wie lang. Auf Wünsche bei Besichtigungszeiten der Tempel wurde eingegangen. Sehr netter, hilfsbereiter Guide (Hassan), der auch ausserhalb der Landbesuche immer ansprechbar war (auch via Whatsapp). An manchen Stellen hätten seine Erläuterungen zur Historie detaillierter sein können, empfindet aber jeder in einer Reisegruppe anders. Schiff in Ordnung, ist jedoch wohl älterer Bauart. Ausblick auf den Nil sowohl vom Zimmer als auch vom Sonnendeck hervorragend. Aufgrund der Schleusenzeiten auf dem Nil war eine Tempelbesichtigung schon um 5 Uhr früh. Essen war gut. Da viele Ägypter mitreisten eine Mischung aus arabischer und westlicher Küche. Am Tanzprogramm habe ich nicht teilgenommrn. Angenehme Gruppengrösse von ca 10 Personen (bei Hassan). Klare Weiterempfehlung.

Overall an outstanding experience in Egypt. Our guide Adham went above and beyond to look after our group, and spent much of his own time explaining everything Egypt to us. This tour is a lovely blend of a cultural experience whilst still feel safe & having the creature comforts of nice hotels most nights. At no point did I (female traveller) feel unsafe & I would say my experience in Egypt exceeded my expectations. My only critique is the dining experience on the first night was less than desirable (very western feeling buffet packed to the brim with tourists singing the Macarena) but this was redeemed by the entertainment. If similar bellydancing entertainment could be found elsewhere I would encourage travel talk to look at another more authentic venue.

King Ramses - 13 days

What an experience! One I will truly treasure and never forget. I was a bit worried about what Egypt would be like but it was better than I expected. On the go and Mo Mo organize everything, so you don’t have to worry about accommodation or missing out on any of the sites. We saw so many sites from ancient times that were mind blowing. All the accommodation we stayed at were 4-5 star hotels. We did do the sleeper train which was an experience, but really not bad. The Nile Cruise was beautiful and very relaxing. Abu Simbel and the pyramids was definitely a highlight of mine. We also were taken to local stores where we could buy jewelry, perfume and alabaster. The Red Sea was spectacular, a perfect way to end the tour by the beach. The resort that we stayed at was so nice. MoMo was full of knowledge about all the sites we visited and explained things well. Egypt is full of beautiful and happy people and some of the most beautiful sites! I’m so happy I booked this tour.

I will now go into details, let me start with the fact that all our needs were taken care of, from being picked up on time in safe and comfortable cars with friendly and skilled drivers. The ship, their crew, the food, the planning and luxury was just perfect. So much variety of high quality foods in the buffet, every day something new! And 10+ dishes to choose from + many more deserts. Breakfast, lunch and dinner all unique. Everything was just super. The room and service was great 10/10. We were assigned what I now believe is the best tour guide ever Hassan! (We miss him already) Every day we got to see different breath taking archeological sites and marvels. With the accurate and detailed explanations from Hassan. He made sure that our health and safety was always a priority with frequent drinks for hydration and patience for everyone in our group. All our questions were answered and he made sure we were always on time before the other tourists from other companies showed up. This way we had peace at every location and time to look at many of the the beautiful temples and locations in Egypt. We felt like we went back in time!! Next year we hope to return simply for these reasons: Egypt, it’s culture, the locals, the excellent luxury cruise and Hassan!! The best tour guide in Egypt.( you might think why again?) Well there is just so much more to see and the tour guide will bring you anywhere! Also being on the ship and the Nile is just something you’ll want more than once in your life. I thoroughly enjoyed this tour and had a fantastic time, due to my constrained budget, I chose not to participate in the optional tours, which I now regret after hearing from everyone in the group that it was a highlight and a must-do experience. Nevertheless, I'm determined to return and make the most of all the opportunities next time.

Astounding. Breathtaking. A glimpse into the past of the greatest civilization on Earth. George (Tamer) was our guide. I have never taken a tour before, and George's know how, knowledge, and personality had no bounds! He is the BEST tour guide, over flowing with love of his past and a passion that shines. Our 9 days were packed, which I love! You can sleep when you get home, but in the mean time, I tried to do all the extra excursions, because why not?! I love Egypt and it's profound history. This opportunity was a dream come true for me as an archaeologist! I HIGHLY recommend this tour and George!!! George is attentive, always made sure we understood and was clear on the days proceedings. I didn't have to worry about a thing, because George was on the ball 100% of the time. Please go. I’m not usually a fan of tours, but I was a huge fan of this one. Good mix of adventure and relaxation, while seeing the highlights of Egypt and making new friends. This tour is also very flexible if you want to add extra activities or days. Be sure to check out the optional excursions. Nabil was also a great and very knowledgeable guide.

Husband & I enjoyed a 14 night trip to Hurghada & then a Nike Cruise. George was our cruise tour guide. We found him to be considerate & knowledgeable. He spoke excellent English & had a depth & breadth of knowledge on Egyptian history that only a person with a passion for their subject could have.
