Friday’s preholiday travel breaks the record for the most airline travelers screened at US airports

ATLANTA (AP) — A record was broken  ahead of the Memorial Day weekend  for the number of airline travelers screened at U.S. airports, the Transportation Security Administration said Saturday.

More than 2.9 million travelers were screened at U.S. airports on Friday, surpassing a previous record set last year on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, according to the transportation security agency.

“Officers have set a new record for most travelers screened in a single day!” the TSA tweeted. “We recommend arriving early.”

The third busiest day on record was set on Thursday when just under 2.9 million travelers were screened at U.S. airports.

In Atlanta, the world’s busiest airport had its busiest day ever. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport broke a traffic record on Thursday when 111,000 passengers, airlines crew and airport employees were screened at security checkpoints. The second busiest day followed on Friday when 109,960 people were screened, according to the TSA

With 104.6 million passengers, the Atlanta airport was the busiest in the world last year, according to Airports Council International.

U.S. airlines  expect to carry  a record number of passengers this summer. Their trade group estimates that 271 million travelers will fly between June 1 and August 31, breaking the record of 255 million set  last summer .

AAA predicted this will be the busiest start-of-summer weekend in nearly 20 years, with 43.8 million people expected to roam at least 50 miles from home between Thursday and Monday — 38 million of them taking vehicles.

The annual expression of wanderlust that accompanies the start of the summer  travel season  is happening at a time when Americans tell pollsters  they are worried  about the economy and the direction of the country.

In what had long been celebrated every May 30 to honor America’s fallen soldiers, Memorial Day officially became a federal holiday in 1971, observed on the last Monday in May.

3 Travel Stocks to Buy Now: May 2024

InvestorPlace - Stock Market News, Stock Advice & Trading Tips

Travel is back in business. Since the latter years of the Covid-19 pandemic, travel stocks to buy have sharply rebounded, boosting earnings and share price of many companies within the sector. The Amplify Travel Tech ETF (NYSEARCA: AWAY ) buys shares of travel agencies and travel technology businesses. The ETF has risen around 20.65% over the past twelve months, as travel public companies continue to benefit from travel demand.

While travel stocks to buy enjoy some love from the market, below are three stocks to buy now.

Booking Holdings (BKNG)

The home page of the Internet booking of hotels booking.com on the screen the Chinese Xiaomi smartphone in male hand on a computer monitor. BKNG stock.

Booking Holdings (NASDAQ: BKNG ) is a leading global, online travel agency. The holdings company operates household names, including Booking.com, Priceline.com, Kayak.com and Agoda.com. The Covid-19 pandemic hit the company’s revenue and earnings hard in 2020. In fact, revenue contracted nearly 55% on a year-over-year basis while net income came in at a meager $59 million. Since then, Booking’s financial figures have surged well beyond where they were during the pre-pandemic era. In 2023, revenue grew 25% to $21.4 billion.

The firm’s first quarter earnings report for fiscal year 2024 surpassed both revenue and earnings estimates. Quarterly revenue increased 17% YOY to $4.4 billion, while net income increased 192% YOY to $776 million.

BKNG shares have risen over 9% since the start of the year. The company’s recent earnings beat coupled with the fact its stock trades at 21.4x forward earnings, make it a compelling investment.

Airbnb (ABNB)

Person holding Airbnb logo over the cityscape of Rome, Italy. ABNB stock.

Airbnb (NASDAQ: ABNB ) makes the second entry on this list. The company is a household name for travelers and vacationers across the globe. Airbnb’s online marketplace allows both hosts and guests to connect via their personal computers or via mobile devices to offer and book living spaces. The online platform has grown up in terms of its financial statements. Before and during much of the pandemic years, Airbnb was loss-making company that had been burning significant amounts of cash. However, since 2022, Airbnb has become profitable on a GAAP basis and has continued to improve EPS from year-to-year.

Its recent first quarter earnings report for fiscal year 2024 is a testament to the firm’s ability to grow revenue robustly while keeping margins up. Revenue for the first quarter as well earnings surpassed what Wall Street analysts had been predicting. In particular, revenue increased 18% to $2.1 billion while net income came in around $264 million, making this quarter the company’s most profitable since inception.

ABNB trades at clear premium to a platform like Booking, but robust revenue and earnings growth still makes it a travel stock to buy.

Delta Air Lines (DAL)

Inside the airplane cabin of a Delta flight.

Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL ) is a well-known full-service airline for those living in the United States. The airline has built a robust domestic service that can get anyone to any major city in the country; Delta’s international service includes global hubs across Latin America, Western Europe and East Asia. The airline benefitted immensely from pent-up travel demand after Covid-19 restrictions were done away with. Delta’s revenue growth figures in 2021 and 2022 both encroached upon triple-digit territory.

Fourth quarter results for fiscal year 2023 saw quarterly earnings double on a year-over-year basis, as a result of not just strong domestic travel but, particularly, the rebound international travel routes. First quarter earnings results for fiscal year 2024 also surpassed estimates as “consumers continue[d] to prioritize travel as a discretionary investment in themselves.”

That is to say, despite inflationary pressures, consumers are still willing to spend on travel, which can only help Delta Air Lines and its shares in the near and medium term.

I went on one date with a man, and then we decided to travel together indefinitely. It's not as romantic as it seems.

  • While traveling full time, I joined a dating app and went on a date; we fell for each other.
  • Since we have similar values, we decided to travel together indefinitely.
  • It's been difficult at times, and our future is uncertain, but it's the perfect life for us.

Insider Today

Last year, I finally fulfilled my dream of traveling full time when I got a job aboard a cruise ship. I was loving every moment of my nomadic life. I was too busy enjoying myself to worry about a relationship.

But in my second year of the job and third year of being single, I joined the Nomad Soulmates dating app . I wasn't necessarily looking for my soulmate because travel was my priority for most of my life. But at 32, I knew I had to make a proactive choice to prioritize relationships and dating.

In April 2023, I disembarked the ship in Lisbon and tried out the app. I was skeptical it would lead anywhere because I only had two months off the ship before I had to head to Norway to join my next contract. Plus, I had already scheduled my travel plans for the next two months.

But then I matched with someone that made me rethink everything.

We had an instant connection

I matched with a man who was in Lisbon for the month. He asked me out for Greek food, and I figured it was worth a try. Once again, I didn't imagine it would go anywhere because I planned to stay for only a week before heading to Porto for the weekend and then off to Spain for the next leg of my trip .

Related stories

But our date ended up being so much fun that I was interested in seeing where it could go. He was silly, and that was refreshing. We shared many of the same values and loved traveling, so the conversation never lagged.

I surprised myself when I invited him to stay with me for a few nights in Porto. During our visit to Porto, I canceled my trip to Spain and accepted his invitation to return to Lisbon with him, beginning our partnership.

We decided to keep traveling together

I had to choose between my travel plans and my partner . Having been a solo traveler, giving up my travel plans for something that might not work out wasn't a decision I took lightly.

But I wanted to take a chance as we found ourselves on the same page about everything — especially what we were looking for in a long-term relationship and what we wanted in the future. I never saw myself returning to the US; I wanted to return to Italy or continue traveling full time with my future partner and kids. He also had no plans on returning to his home country of Germany and, having been traveling full time since 2018, was uninterested in stopping. He also wants children and plans to travel with them full time.

I saw that we were on the same page regarding how we wanted to incorporate parenting, traveling, and our careers, so we decided to continue traveling together — which was a decision we made exceptionally quickly.

I was fearful at the beginning of our relationship because I heard horror stories from friends about traveling with partners they just met. Luckily, being seasoned travelers , we face inconveniences quite similarly and calmly. Within the last year, we've dealt with being separated for months at a time and spending every second together for months at a time. We've also experienced missed flights, scooter accidents, cockroach infestations, and a lack of necessities such as hot water. It's not all romance and dreamy vacations.

Like so many other relationships I've had, I thought each new inconvenience would fracture our relationship, causing us to decide that maybe this wasn't the right partnership for us. But it all had the opposite effect, building the foundation of our relationship as we moved into the second year of traveling full time together.

Bound by wanderlust , we aren't sure what our futures hold, but we'll sculpt it with our shared dreams.

86-year-old says her greenhouse business isn’t stopping anytime soon: ‘I’m still here’

EDDINGTON, Maine ( WABI /Gray News) – More than six decades ago, a young woman from the UK uprooted her life to follow her heart and move to Maine. These days, the business her late husband started is still in full bloom.

At age 86, Beth Hutchings might not be the mayor of Eddington, but she does hold court over her own corner of town.

Hutchings was born in Northern Ireland and lived there until fate intervened and brought her across the ocean.

“Well, I met my husband in Northern Ireland. He was in the Navy. Belfast is a big city, and I went with my uncle to look around the ship that came in there, and that’s how I met him,” Hutchings said.

After that chance encounter, Hutchings eventually followed her new love back to Maine where they put down roots and raised a family.

“I love the state. I love the people here. Mm-hmm. I do!” she said.

Gardening was among the Hutchings’ shared interests. Soon, that bloomed into a business.

“I always had a garden, yeah. And he had a garden and had extra [plants]. This is how he started. He had extra plants and put them at the side of the road. People got them, and then they got more, and more, and more,” Hutchings recalled.

That business still stands today. Over time, Hutchings Greenhouse has grown in size and popularity.

“We seem to be getting bigger and bigger every year,” she said. “It’s a great business. People love it. They’ll tell you. The prices are good.”

Hutchings has been running Hutchings Greenhouse since her husband LeRoy’s death in 2015. Their daughter, Joanie, returns from Northern Ireland every February and stays until the fall to help out.

If you think Hutchings takes it easy during the off season, though, think again.

“I knit sweaters in the wintertime,” she said. She formerly worked at a knitting factory for 26 years.

But every spring, Hutchings returns to her roadside oasis. And even after celebrating her 86th birthday earlier this month, she’s not slowing down anytime soon.

“Well, I’ve done it all of these years and I’ve loved it all of these years. So, I’m still here!” she said.

Hutchings Greenhouse is located at 445 Riverside Drive in Eddington, Maine, and is open daily from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m.
