Poly, the company behind the Voyager 4300 UC reviewer here, has an incredible history going back to the 1960s when they created the headsets used on the Apollo moon missions.

Based primarily in San Jose and Santa Cruz, California, the Poly operation employs around 6,500 people in its 75 global offices.

These days the business still makes headsets, but it also offers Business phones, video conferencing hardware and software solutions aimed at connecting people.

Under the Voyager branding, Poly offers a range of wireless headsets and headphones designed for those that use clear and effective communications as part of their daily lives.

The Poly Voyager 4300 UC series are its latest entry-level solution, specified for both home and office users. Are these the ideal Bluetooth headset for home workers?

Price and availability

The Poly Voyager 4300 UC Series headsets come in two flavours, a single monaural 4310 UC headset and the stereo 4320 UC model reviewed here. They also make specific Microsoft Teams versions of these with an extra Teams function button.

They come as both USB-A and USB-C Bluetooth adapters, and a Voyager Office base also allows the units to be stored and charged when not in use. The Voyager Office base can also connect the headset to an existing phone system if that’s a requirement.

The cost of the Poly Voyager 4320 UC reviewed here is £212.95 ($229.95) direct from Poly, and with a charging stand, the price is £230.95 ($249.95).

• The best noise cancelling headphones

It’s become common to put Bluetooth headphones in string bags, probably because it reduces the costs associated with other packaging options.

Our Voyager 4320 UC came in one, along with a tiny USB-A BT700 Bluetooth adapter and a USB-A to USB-C cable. The cable is required to charge the headphones, but it can also double to provide a wired link to a computer should you not wish to use Bluetooth.

Handling these for the first time, they feel lightweight (162g) but substantial. Construction appears to be primarily glass-reinforced plastic with very high-quality injection moulding used throughout.

It is also obvious that the designer of these conceived them as both stereo and monoaural from the outset, as almost everything necessary is on the right side of the headset. No controls are on the left, reducing that side to merely a left-side driver.

While this makes the construction of the monoaural models very straightforward, it could also makes these a less compelling solution for those that are left-handed. All the volume controls and the microphone boom are on the right.

Except this ingenious design allows them to be fully reversible, moving the controls and the boom microphone to the left for those that prefer it there.

Adjustment for head size is via notched arms that slide inside the headband. Once you’ve set these to your optimal position, there is sufficient friction that they should move while you are handling the headset away from your head.

• The best over-ear headphones money can buy

Where this unit is slightly lacking is in the comfort department. The top of the band has a cushioned section across the top where the most pressure is applied. Less padding is provided on the drivers, as these are covered in relatively thin sponge protection.

Where we did experience a little discomfort is that the sideways pressure applied by the band trapped the reviewers' glasses between his ear and skull. Those with less beach-ball inspired craniums will probably be fine, but for others, these might prove unsuitable for prolonged use.

Another exciting aspect of this design is that it has a different mix of audio functionality than we’ve seen elsewhere. Its designers focused more on the microphone and its abilities than the reduction in ambient sound on the wearer.

The microphone is part of a noise-cancelling boom with dual microphone acoustic fence technology. That should reduce any environmental sounds propagating to be heard by the other end of a call or conference. However, there is no active noise cancellation in the headphones, so the operator will still hear those sounds.

Because of this choice, these may be more suitable for home workers than those in a call centre, or at least in an office which isn’t exceptionally noisy.

These are remarkably straightforward to use, as Ploy avoided any complicated buttons or controls to confuse the user.

The one can is a single USB-C port that can be used for wired use and to charge the unit, and on either side of this are two small recesses designed to help engage the connections on the optional charging stand.

On the same side are three widely spaced buttons for increasing and decreasing volume and ending or starting a call on the end of the can. Lights around those show the call status of the headset wearer to those nearby, a feature we’d associate more with call centre applications.

Cleverly the mute button is on the flexible microphone arm near the driver end, so fumbling for it shouldn’t be picked up by the mic, and it's easy to find after just a couple of uses.

The power on/off switch doubles for Bluetooth pairing, but you will only need this if you want to use the headset with a phone or system that has Bluetooth embedded in it. Using the provided BT700 Bluetooth adapter, no pairing is required. The headset will automatically connect if powered on when the Bluetooth adapter is inserted into a USB port.

Whenever something significant happens, like the headset powers on or connects to the Bluetooth adapters, a voice informs the wearer what has occurred. From a user perspective, these are very friendly and easy to use.

For extra control over the headset, Poly offers a free-to-download application, Poly Lens Desktop App. Available for both Windows and Apple Mac systems, the application provides a standard mechanism for configuring all Poly hardware, including the 4300 UC Series.

This tool is needed to upgrade the firmware on both the headset and BT700 Bluetooth adapter.  And can also set audio limits on how loud the headset can be or how abruptly the volume can change.

It is also possible to upload different languages to the headset that it can use when communicating with the user, overwriting the default US/English.

Alongside the hardware configuration functions, Poly Lens Desktop App also has wellness reminders to tell users when they need to move around or look away from the screen.

For businesses with a significant number of these products deployed and more strategic planning of user protections, a Cloud version of Poly Lens can be purchased, enabling centralised management of these settings.

If the 4300 series has a stand-out feature, it’s undoubtedly the battery management, enabling up to 24 hours of talk-time and up to 47 hours of listening. It takes just 1.6 hours (96 minutes) to recharge fully, and you can get sufficient battery power for 10 hours from just 15 minutes of power connection.

If only used occasionally, they’ll last 50 days in a drawer on standby, making them ideal for infrequent users. All the quoted time figures assume that the headset is used with the BT700 Bluetooth adapter since it uses Bluetooth 5.2 for greater power efficiencies.

Sound performance

For business use, the sound quality is more than acceptable, though the frequency range probably isn’t going to impress hardcore audiophiles.

To our ears, the lower end bass and high treble are clipped, shrinking the overall audio space. That said, this isn’t a bad experience. But it just isn’t one with the richness that music and movie fans would specifically embrace.

The focus of this design is the other person in this conversation, and that’s where the Voyager 4320 UC is an exceptional design.

In our testing, we placed noisy equipment near the wearer to assess how much sound would bleed over to the conversation. The acoustic fence technology Poly uses works remarkably well, negating most of the extraneous sounds.

For home workers, a barking dog or delivery doorbell isn’t likely to be commented on, even if it might distract the wearer.

Final verdict

Even if they weren’t entirely comfortable for our reviewer, for the majority of normal humans, these should be fine with these. As with all headphones, their suitability for all-day wear is a personal thing, and we wouldn't assume to say that everyone would find them comfortable enough for extended use.

If you can wear them all day, the experience is a good one, with very clear and balanced audio and excellent battery life. There are headsets that offer even longer battery lives, but the ability to fast charge these enough for more than a working day of use in just 15 minutes is handy.

Even without active noise cancellation, the Voyager 4320 UC provide clear sound and excellent clarity for anyone at the recipient end of the conversation.

The audio representation to the wearer isn’t spectacular, but it is better than it needs to be for the typical usage.

What might be more of an issue is the pricing. These are more expensive than some of the comparable designs, like the EPOS I SENNHEISER Adapt 260 and the Sony WH-1000XM3 . Though, they are cheaper than the Bose 700 UC and Sony WH-1000XM4 .

The positioning of the Voyager 4320 UC between these products hints that Poly is looking to draw customers from both ends of this spectrum.

However, the lack of active noise cancelling might undermine customers who work in inherently loud environments.

We conclude that while we liked much of what the Voyager 4300 UC series offered, they’re probably a little overpriced.

Poly Voyager 4300 UC In Depth Setup Guide

Out of the box your Poly Voyager 4300 UC wireless headset will connect with your mobile phone or computer applications. Microsoft Teams, RingCentral, Cisco, Avaya and Zoom are a few examples you could be using. 

You'll have one of two models in the Voyager 4300 UC series. You could have the Voyager 4320 UC or the Voyager 4310 UC and this guide will be the same setup for both.

Connecting to your computer

You may want to pair your headset and computer together via Bluetooth. We highly advise against doing that because customers experience audio issues, unreliable connectivity and no ability to answer/end calls away from the computer, or mute/unmute your mic for example.

Instead, you want to use the BT700 USB Dongle that's included in the box with your Voyager 4300 UC. The headset and adapter come pre-paired together, so it's plug and play.

• Connect the BT700 to your computer
• Power on your headset 
• Your headset is now ready to be used on the computer for calls and audio.

Listening to music on the computer

In some cases the BT700 won't be recognized as the default device and you'll hear no audio when trying to listen to music. If that's the case follow the steps below.

Go to your Start Menu > Control Panel > Sound > Playback tab. Select Poly BT700, set it as Default Device and click OK.

Go to the Apple menu > System Preferences > Sound. On both the input and output tabs, select Poly BT700

Manually pairing to the BT700

Out of the box the BT700 comes pre-paired to your headset, but in the case it didn't come pre-paired or lost pairing, follow the steps below.

• Put your headset into pairing mode
• Download the Poly Lens App if you don't already have it. Within the app you'll select "Pair" and your adapter will flash red and blue.
• Pairings successful when you hear "pairing successful" and "PC connected". The BT700 will then show a solid LED

Pairing to your mobile phone

• Slide and hold the power switch away from the off position until you hearing "pairing" and the headset LEDs will flash red and blue. When that happens release your finger.
• Activate Bluetooth on your mobile phone and set it to search for new devices ( For iPhone go to Settings > Bluetooth On > Scan for devices | For Android go to Settings > Bluetooth On > Scan for devices)
• Select Poly V43XX Series
• Once successful you'll hearing "pairing succesful" in the headset and the LEDs will stop flashing.

Note:  Your Voyager 4300 UC can pair up to 8 devices but only maintain 2 connections at the same time. This includes the BT700.

Adjusting your headset

You can rotate the microphone to be worn on the left or ride side of your mouth. And you'll be able to adjust the headband inwards or upwards for the best comfort. 

Charging your headset

The Voyager 4300 UC can be charged with a USB-C cable or if you ordered the model with the charging stand, simply seat the headset on the charging base. It takes about 90 minutes for a full charge.

Once fully charged the LEDs turn off on your headset. 

Benefits of Poly Lens App

It's highly recommended but not required in all cases to download the Poly Lens App. It's a good idea to download for a few reasons.

• You'll be reminded when an update is available to keep your headset working great at all times.
• Some softphones require the Lens App to be downloaded so you have the ability to answer/end calls away from the computer with your headset.
• Allows you to customize settings.
• Customizable reminders that make sure you take breaks and drink water throughout the day to stay most productive.

Corded mode

If you find your audio is cutting out or you're dealing with sound quality issues, there may be intereference happening. If that happens you have the option to used corded mode to avoid this issue.

• Disconnect your Poly BT700 USB adapter from the computer.
• Connect your headset with the included USB cable.
• Power off your headaset.
• You're now in corded mode and your battery charges at all times as well.

Poly Voyager 4300 UC: One Headset for Everything

Poly means professional audio communications. And they’re not resting on their laurels. They keep on pushing the envelope, improving their headset offerings regularly.

With the new Voyager 4300 UC Series of Bluetooth Headsets, Poly has improved upon their popular Voyager 4200 Series. The new Poly headsets offer wireless convenience, excellent noise reduction with Acoustic Fence, extended wireless range and more.

There are 16 models of Voyager 4300 UC available. That may sound like a lot, but there are only a few differences for you to think about:

• Mono or Stereo
• Standard Edition or Microsoft Teams Edition
• USB-A Adapter or USB-C Adapter
• With Charging Stand or Without

Poly Voyager 4300 UC Headsets

The Poly Voyager 4300 UC Series is a one-headset solution for professional communications in the office, at home and on the road.

They feature dual microphones on a flexible microphone boom. The two microphones allow them to support Acoustic Fence. This class-leading noise reduction technology detects how far away sounds are coming from and eliminates sounds coming from a set distance away. The effect is as if you’re in a room by yourself, even if you’re in the middle of an open office.

SoundGuard DIGITAL technology protects your ears both by limiting sudden noises and by monitoring loud sound exposure over time. Dynamic EQ adjusts the audio based on what you’re listening to, voice or media, so the audio will always sound best.

Call controls are built into the headset: call answer/end, volume up/down and power. Mute is placed on the microphone broom. If you forget to unmute the mic and start talking, Dynamic Mute Alert lets you know.

It has an on-call indicator light that shows coworkers or family members when you’re on a call by showing a red light, or when you’re available by showing a green light. On-call indicators improve productivity by limiting unwanted interruptions.

They’re Bluetooth headsets that support v5.2. When used normally, they have a wireless range of up to 164 ft. When used with the optional Voyager Office Base, the maximum wireless range is 298 ft. They can connect to a computer and mobile device at the same time, making it much easier to switch between tasks.

The design has been updated to improve comfort with memory foam ear cushions. The padded headband is adjustable.

The headsets are designed for portability, so you can use them on the road or at home, just as well as in the office. The headphones fold flat, making them slimmer and less prone to damage. They come with a travel pouch.

How are Voyager 4300 UC headsets different from Voyager 4200 UC headsets?

Voyager 4300 UC provide upgrades on the previous Voyager 4200 UC series in many ways.

First off, they offer twice the talk time: 24 hours vs 12 hours. Yes, Voyager 4300 UC headsets now offer up to 100% full day battery power.

The headsets support Acoustic Fence, which is a class-leading noise reduction technology that we described above.

The headsets now support Bluetooth v5.2 and offer a wireless range almost twice as far as the previous models when used normally: 164 ft vs 98 ft. When used with the Voyager Office Base, the range for both headsets is 298 ft.

The new headsets are compatible with the improved Poly BT700 USB Bluetooth Adapter when you want to use them with computers. BT700 is smaller and supports a greater wireless range. It can also enable features like controlling calls, showing battery levels on the computer and more.

The mute button is now placed on the microphone boom, making it easier to find and use. In addition, the boom has improved flexibility and stays in position better than the previous models.

Finally, the headset’s charging port has been upgraded from Micro USB to USB-C.

Can you use a Poly Voyager 4300 UC headset with Microsoft Teams?

Yes. There are Microsoft Teams versions of every model of Poly Voyager 4300 UC Headset. They are instantly recognized by Teams for a seamless experience. They also have a dedicated Microsoft teams button on the headphones to launch the service with just one touch.

Can you use a Poly Voyager 4300 UC headset with Zoom?

Yes. Poly Voyager 4300 UC are the latest edition to the incredibly deep portfolio of Poly headsets that are Zoom compatible . In fact, they’re Zoom Certified. If you want professional audio for your Zoom Rooms video conferences either on a computer, tablet or smartphone, Voyager 4300 UC headsets are an excellent option.

Can you use a Poly Voyager 4300 UC headset with a VoIP phone?

Yes, although you will need to get a Poly Voyager Office Base (sold separately), which also comes in a Microsoft Teams version. The headset communicates with the base via Bluetooth. The base connects via cables to a computer and phone. You switch between the two by tapping one of the capacitive buttons. Poly Voyager Office Base for Microsoft Teams also has a dedicated Microsoft Teams button for launching the service. The base also acts as a charging stand for the headset.

This means you can use one headset with your smartphone, computer and phone.

Do Poly Voyager 4300 UC include Active Noise Cancellation (ANC)?

No, they don’t offer ANC.

Is Poly Voyager 4300 UC a portable headset?

Yes, Voyager 4300 UC is portable. Its headphones fold flat and the package comes with a carrying case to protect them in transit.

Can you use a Poly Voyager 4300 UC headset as a wired headset?

Yes, you can use a Poly Voyager 4300 UC headset as a wired USB headset using the included USB cable. Sound enhancing features like Acoustic Fence and call controls continue to be functional when you use it as a USB headset. At the same time, the headset will charge, and the Bluetooth radio will turn off, which is great for reducing wireless spectrum load in locations with a high density of wireless devices.
