Davidoff Cool Water vs Nautica Voyage [Compared in 2021]

Projection and Longevity

Compliment factor, versatility, value for money, overall scent, our final verdict, clash of scents: cool water vs nautica voyage.

For this edition of the cologne matchups, we have two scents that dominate sale in their respective price brackets: Nautica Voyage vs. Cool Water by Davidoff.

Davidoff Cool Water

Main Notes: Lavender, Coriander, Peppermint, Rosemary, Orange Blossom

Davidoff Cool Water was released in 1988 by Davidoff. Developed by Pierre Bourdon, Cool Water is one of the most incredible fragrances on the market.

Cool Water is a fresh aromatic cologne. Davidoff has released many flankers of this cologne like Cool Water Intense, Cool Water wave, Cool Water Parfum, e.t.c. Cool Water is an inoffensive and versatile fragrance.

nautica voyage or cool water

Nautica Voyage

Main Notes: Green leaves, Apple, Lotus · Base Notes: Cedarwood, Marine notes, Amber, Musk

Nautica Voyage by Nautica is a Woody Aquatic fragrance for men. Nautica Voyage was launched in 2006. The nose behind this fragrance is Maurice Roucel.

This airy, watery fragrance opens with a refreshing burst of green apple and green leaves for a nose-tempting botanical start. A heart of mimosa and lotus and a base of cedar give the scent a woodsy finish that leaves a memorable impression on everyone you encounter.

Nautica Voyage

These are both popular aquatic fragrances among men today but they each offer something unique.

Let’s find out which fragrance is right for you!

So, here is the comparison between Nautica Voyage and Cool Water:

Cool Water has an aquatic opening that starts off with mint and lavender. It then moves on to sandalwood for what feels like just the right amount before the white floral note, Jasmine joins those at the top and creates a soothing aroma.

Mint is what gives Cool Waters the “Cool” name and vibe; it’s refreshing and works like a charm on hot summer days.

It’s easy to see why Cool Water is such a popular aquatic scent; it has that light airy refreshing feel to make you attractive in mid-summer heat – not too overwhelming but still powerful enough for any occasion!

Now, What about Nautica Voyage? Well, firstly its sharpness comes largely due to apple and mimosa. It has a green cool forest vibe at the opening.

Nautica Voyage has a cool cucumbery opening and crisp feeling throughout most of its duration; starting out with apple and mimosa, before giving way to some intense spices like oakmoss and amber which are still quite pleasant overall.\

Now, Which is better?

To be honest, Both of these project a similar vibe. But Cool water has such an iconic opening that I have to lean towards it. The Mint note in there is just unbeatable.

When it comes to projecting their scent, these two colognes are pretty similar.

Reformulation over the years has reduced the longevity of Cool Water somewhat. It used to be good for over 8 hours but now seems to go 6-7 hours max, on my skin.

Nautica Voyage will do 5-7 hrs and I have never gotten any more from it than that range!

They both have a moderate projection level and give off that same cool and refreshing vibe. Although cool water is more consistent when it comes to projection.

So, Davidoff will win here again. But Nautica Voyage isn’t far off either. You can’t go wrong with any one of these.

Cool Water is a massively popular scent in the fragrance community. There’s nothing to hate about it. The clean and aquatic vibe will bring you lots of compliments, that’s a guarantee.

However, Nautica Voyages’s smell is smoother than Cool Water, meaning that all the notes are balanced and won’t offend anyone.

On the other hand, Cool Water is a smell that every woman seems to know. I first purchased a decant and it got me compliments like never before. So after that, I didn’t wait anymore to grab the full bottle!

Follow our comparison of  Versace Eros vs Eros Flame vs Eros EDP

If you’re in the same room as someone wearing this fragrance, you will stand out from all other generic scents. Everyone who has smelled  Cool Water’s signature aroma gave compliments on how good the smell is.

So, for complements, any of these two scents will work. I’d say Cool Water is more popular and mass appealing. But If you prefer a safe choice, go with Nautica Voyage.

Both of the colognes are perfect for casual and formal occasions, but if you’re looking to wear one during a specific time period like Summer or Spring then it’s important that they match your desired attire.

As with most things in life though this isn’t always so easy because Davidoff Cool Water smells more mature than Nautica Voyage–it is also much better suited for work environments where no one would have a chance to get offended by your cologne.

Nautica Voyage can also go as an office scent and in casual seasons. However, its more youthful feel means it won’t work well at either black tie events or nightlife where people want something elegant with their attire.

Quickly check out our post on D&G Light Blue vs Light Blue Eau Intense

While Cool Water can go for any occasion and be worn in most environments from the office to daily life; Voyage will always feel more appropriate when you’re going casual because of its Spring/Summer vibe with elegant floral notes coming through on top.

The difference between the two colognes is that Nautica Voyage has a more playful and sexy scent while Davidoff Cool Water smells more mature. The versatility of each fragrance also varies depending on your preference.

If you are going out for drinks or work then it’s better to wear something lightweight. In that case, any of these colognes will do the job.

So, what’s the bottom line?

With the versatility of Nautica Voyage, it can be worn casually or at work. But if you’re looking for something more “mature” then Cool Water would fit your needs better; though they both have a place in every man’s wardrobe!

It’s not just about how expensive a cologne smells; it also has to do with why we buy them.

You want something that will last all day or at least multiple hours and still smell good afterward, in which case

Davidoff Cool Water Vs Nautica Voyage both are worth the money because they’re under $30 each!

Both of these fragrances are really affordable. So if you like this type of aquatic scent, I‘d suggest getting both of them and use for different occasions.

As there’s no significant price difference, both of these colognes will provide the same value for your money.

Looking for an incredible fragrance to wear each and every day? Cool Water is just the one you’re looking for. It has the potential to become your signature scent.

But there is a problem with Cool Water. See, the DNA of this citrus masculine ambroxan scent has been replicated in so many colognes in the market that it has become a very familiar smell.

Even some big names in the fragrance industry have made colognes inspired by Cool Water.

If you’re looking to add a signature showstopper cologne to your collection, Cool Water could be the one.

Both of these fragrances are popular, and both of them are equally versatile. And it’s really tough to call for a winner here.

If I had to choose between these two, I would pick Cool Water over Nautica Voyage. It is one of the most superior cologne I’ve ever sniffed, and every bit of it feels premium.

The choice is in Your Hands.

As I said before, the ultimate comparison depends on you.

Since both of these colognes are massively popular, I’d suggest getting decant or sample bottles of them and try out on yourself to see which one you like the most. Then you can commit to the full bottle.

Tale of the Tape: Voyage vs. Cool Water

Read my Review: Cool Water

nautica voyage or cool water

Nautica Voyage has a watery opening that is crisp and has a chilled feeling. It starts out with apple, mimosa, and musk. It is green, a bit musky, with a floral kick. It’s not my favorite part of the wear, but does a decent job at introducing this cologne.

I enjoy the juicy fruit and the colder aspects of it, much more than the mimosa floral. It’s not my favorite flora, but it works fairly well in Voyage.

Cool Water is an aquatic scented fragrance from the start and these marine notes are initially joined by mint and tobacco. It is sharp and has a green quality as well, from the uncured tobacco, before white floral notes join those at the top. It then becomes somewhat soapy.

By the name, you would expect much more of an aquatic sort of cologne, but it really only sways that way in the beginning. And even the, it is tempered.

Which is better? I prefer Cool Water, even though, I’m not crazy about it. I like the mint, tobacco, and aquatic notes…not so much the soapy scent. However, Voyage doesn’t start out great, in my opinion. It’s the mimosa and musk combo is a bit much.

The opening act really isn’t the strong suit of either fragrance.

Edge: Cool Water

Nowadays, I think that these two colognes are pretty similar in terms of sillage. They both hit that moderate chord, pretty well. If we’re talking vintage Cool Water, it’d have the advantage. None exists now.

Either way, neither of these are going to be complete bombs. However, you will notice that you have them on throughout the day, as they aren’t completely weak.

They aren’t going to leave huge scent trails behind you or just leap up off of the skin either. But, they’re nice for what they are.

Again, reformulation hinders the newer bottles of Cool Water somewhat. It used to be good for over 8 hours, but now seems to go 6-7, on my skin. Voyage will do 5-7. No real advantage in terms of how long it can go, but maybe Cool Water has better consistency.

Voyage is very consistent in that 5-7 hour range. I’ve never gotten any more from it. Really depends on the day, but it is good for at least those 5.

The performance is at least good enough from both, to keep them in the value play category of scents. I’ll give this category to the Davidoff.

Edge: Cool Water (slightly)

Versatility

Voyage has solid versatility. It can go casual and even some work environments. Mostly a spring/summer wear, but you could technically wear it year round.

The same is true for Cool Water, its probably a more mature fragrance, and better for the office or daily wear. Neither is particularly a ‘sexy’ scent, nor a club wear. Cool Water has more of a sense of refinement, versus the more casual Nautica.

Overall Scent

I’m not a huge fan of either or these colognes, I like both, but they’re not something that I wear all of the time. I like the dry down period of Voyage a lot, that’s much better than how it opens. Much smoother, with some oak moss and lotus added.

Cool Water has a nice opening with the mint. I’m not all that into the soapy smell, but when its woody notes hit, I get back into the fragrance.

Which of these two is better? I’d lean Cool Water, I think it has more depth, and has a better smell throughout the wear. Neither is perfect, but both are really good cheapies.

For younger guys, I’d probably go with Voyage. If you’re older, Cool Water would probably fit better. It’s not that much better, but the Davidoff wins here. Vintage bottles, would have more of an edge, but you have to go out of your way to find those around.

Winner: Cool Water

Nautica Voyage Review (2024) Affordable Fragrance For Men

Its availability and affordability make it a great option for fragrance newbies.

The scent works all spring and summer long and wears well for both work and play. It strikes a perfect balance between being a non-committal cologne and a reliable favorite.

While Nautica Voyage does have enough complexity to give it some intrigue, it is a simple and easy-to-appreciate cologne.

Attractive but not the sexiest scent. You may notice other men smelling just like you in public spaces as well, giving you less fragrance identity.

  • This classic scent’s popularity continues to increase as more and more satisfied men get their hands on it. The value, presentation, simplicity, and reliability are its major selling points. The longevity isn’t great, but for guys looking for the perfect light, versatile cologne for warmer months, Nautica Voyage will fill the gap. It has a fresh, fruity scent that compliments a nautical life perfectly but will also work nearly anywhere you go.

Are you looking for a cologne that balances allure and adventure? American sportswear retailer Nautica recently extended its reach to fragrances that suit men with a taste for both. One of the brand’s most successful scents, Voyage brings aquatic and floral notes without the high fragrance prices. If you aren’t trying to spend a small fortune building your fragrance collection, Nautica Voyage falls into that category.

It smells excellent and will work nearly anywhere through the summer months, but also gets it done in fall and spring. Girls love it, guys love it, even animals and babies are probably crazy for the stuff (they just can’t tell us).

If you’re looking for the ins and outs of Voyage, you came to the right place. Our Nautica Voyage review covers all the bases and addresses everything you need to know to make an informed cologne decision, from the scents involved down to the sillage. Voyage isn’t for everyone, but countless guys consider this a tried and true scent .

Read on to see if it’s right for you.

Key Takeaways

Nautica Voyage has been around for a long time, but that doesn’t stop it from being a well-rounded, accessible, and high-performance fragrance. Although it may be overworn because of its long time in the limelight, the cologne is popular with decent sillage, fair longevity, and appropriate depth.

In this Nautica Voyage cologne review, you’ll discover everything you need to know—fragrance notes, ideal occasions, packaging and price, popularity, sillage, and longevity. You’ll even get some alternatives if you’re leaning toward something a little different.

  • Notes & Scent

Trend and Popularity

What we like, final verdict, alternative options, fragrance notes & scent.

Top notes: Apple, Green leaves , lotus

Middle notes: Lotus, mimosa

Base notes: Musk , cedar, oakmoss, amber, marine notes

From the moment you uncap the bottle, you can smell the sophisticated, earthy notes of green leaves, apples, and wood. The scent is light and enjoyable, evoking feelings of spring and summer. After a few moments, the top notes give way to a bouquet of scents hidden within.

Middle notes of lotus and mimosa maintain the adventurous, natural tones but provide a hint of maturity. Following the flowers of summer days, Nautica Voyage finally yields to the deeper scents of a curious and alluring mix of cedar, amber, oakmoss, and musk.

Like those who wear it, there’s more to Nautica Voyage than meets the eye. A complex man deserves a layered scent profile, and that’s what Nautica Voyage provides. The creators sought to make an aquatic, sweet scent that feels like warm seaspray. Mission accomplished.

Usage and Occasion

Nautica Voyage is masculine and refreshing but not attention-grabbing or spicy. It’s ideal for calm spring and summer days, but there are better choices for a nighttime cologne. Pleasant floral notes like lotus, green leaves, and apples complement the growing season, while the aquatic, musky tones are reminiscent of summer sailing.

As a daytime cologne, Nautica Voyage is ideal for when you’re out and about. It doesn’t have the longevity to last an entire day on one spritz, but two will persist through your workday or daylight adventures.

However, Nautica Voyage isn’t the scent for a night on the town or a romantic dinner date. It lacks the intrigue, full body, spiciness, and strength of other colognes. The fragrance’s moderate sillage restricts it, so you won’t be drawing too much attention. Voyage’s notes may also clash with the natural scents of autumn and winter, so it’s worth having backup colognes during those seasons.

Packaging and Price

Packaging considerations might not be at the top of you’re need to know list, but they’re essential to any Nautica Voyage review.  Even though you can find Nautica rubbing elbows with brands like Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger in department stores, it’s much more affordable than other designers.

Typically, a 3.3oz bottle of Nautica Voyage can be had for less than twenty dollars on Amazon. Pretty shocking for a cologne this good from such a well-loved brand, but it’s true. You can opt for a bottle of Voyage by itself or shake things up with a gift set, including deodorizing spray, for a budget-friendly price.

The bottle is elegant and worthy of the smell it contains. Its sleek right angles, blue to clear ombre, and perfectly square shape work well with the energetic nature of Nautica Voyage. A fitting bottle that captures the feel of this cool, outdoorsy cologne effortlessly.

Overall, Nautica Voyage aims for a cheaper and more accessible position among other men’s cologne choices. The price is justified since the scent premiered in 2006 and comes from a sportswear brand rather than a primo EDP creator. It’s great for non-committal wearers or men who are new to colognes.

If you don’t want to take my word in this Nautica Voyage review, then see what Amazon has to say. Spoiler alert: they say it’s one of the most widely-loved scents around.

Although this scent premiered in 2006, it usually remains a best-selling eau de toilette on Amazon, with nearly five stars and over 80 thousand reviews. Those are serious numbers that speak volumes. Toss in the fact that this cologne is extremely affordable no matter your income level, and you have a surefire hit.

It’s not trendy in the same way luxury brands can be, but that doesn’t matter. Unless you’re the type of guy who wants to be on the cutting edge of trends at all times, this cologne will do right by you.

So yes, Nautica had the advantage of already being a reputable sportswear and lifestyle clothing brand, which helped make Voyage one of the most accessible colognes on the market. But today, Voyage is still one of the top-performing men’s colognes, especially for newcomers or budget shoppers. For many, Nautica Voyage is a forever scent, suiting all daytime occasions.

Sillage and Longevity

Nautica Voyage has moderate sillage and longevity . It’s not an aggressive head-turning cologne that demands attention from passersby, but it is a masculine and noticeable scent for anyone close. It typically lasts about 4 to 5 hours, which is standard for eau de toilette fragrances. That’s plenty of time to enjoy a day of activity outdoors.

If you’re a man who wears cologne at work, you may find the longevity a little weak, requiring several spritzes throughout your shift. Nautica doesn’t offer an eau de parfum, so there’s no getting around its average lifetime. Thankfully, there’s a larger 6.7 fluid ounce size to account for when you want to apply Nautica Voyage more often.

Being an everyday cologne suits Voyage due to its cheap price. Expensive primo scents are great for special occasions, but using too much can be expensive over time. Voyage’s status as a casual daytime scent lets you purchase more of it while staying money-conscious. Since so many men adore this fragrance, they can indulge in it all spring and summer long.

Flaws But Not Deal-Breakers

Nautica voyage review: what are customers saying about .

Customers love Nautica Voyage . 86k positive Amazon Nautica Voyage reviews don’t lie, after all. Everyone loves the price, and that’s no surprise, considering how much this scent punches above its weight class. Can you put a price on confidence, though? “I’ve only worn it out once so far, but boy could I not stop smiling and feeling confident all day for the life of me.” This reviewer says you can, and it’s affordable.

Some guys like Ro even prefer Voyage to other name brands. “I have used a few colognes namely Guess, D&G, Burberry, they are all on the expensive end and none of them got me any compliments. This is the only cologne that many said smelled good on me. For the last 7 years, this has been my go-to cologne.”

Some complain it isn’t quite strong enough for long outings and isn’t quite sexy enough for hot dates. I’d say Angelique would disagree—”It smells like ‘you have to the count of 5 to drop them drawers’ and just the smell of it makes magical things.” But I’ll let you be the judge of that.

After taking all of the information from my Nautica Voyage review into account, you should now know where you stand. This classic scent’s popularity continues to increase as more and more satisfied men get their hands on it.

If you’re trying to impress professionally or woo on a date, you might want something stronger and more mature, but everywhere else, this is a killer scent. If you haven’t tried Nautica Voyage for yourself, the price makes it very justifiable to change that.

Nautica Midnight Voyage

Nautica Midnight Voyage is a newer fragrance built on the concept of its predecessor at a higher price point. It carries the same aquatic and floral notes but with spicy additions like mint, pepper, and amber for a more mature touch. This cologne is more attention-grabbing than Voyage and works well for a night on the town or a romantic date.

Kenneth Cole Reaction Connected

In design and fragrance, Connected by Kenneth Cole is similar to Nautica Voyage. It draws on aquatic notes with melon plus violet leaf, herbs, and wood for much more layering and depth. Connected is a primo alternative to Voyage with qualities like designer men’s colognes, but it does come at a high price.

Calvin Klein Eternity for Men AQUA

Many Nautica Voyage reviews compare it to Calvin Klein’s AQUA. Incorporating notes like chilled cucumber, citrus, and lavender, it achieves the same aquatic and floral scent balance. Both are made by reputable men’s clothing retailers, and the cologne bottles even maintain a similar aesthetic, but Calvin Klein scents are often overworn.

To an untrained nose, Nautica Voyage cologne smells like a refreshing mix of water, flowers, and wood. Fragrance experts will pick up on the intricate scent layers that incorporate apple, oakmoss, amber, and much more. The cologne has moderate sillage and longevity, so anyone close to you can enjoy the masculine aroma wafting around you.

A cologne’s effectiveness depends on the season, your activity, and how much you use it. Generally, Nautica Voyage will last up to five hours with moderate usage, although some customers state that it is weaker than they expected. It is a spring and summer cologne, so apply it during those seasons to ensure it stays effective throughout your day.

Nautica Voyage is cheap to maintain the accessibility and popularity that made it famous in the first place. Unlike expensive parfums, Voyage eau de toilette gained a reputation for its quality and cost-friendliness, and Nautica wishes to maintain that status by not raising its price.

This sophisticated blend is both invigorating and grounding, making it a beloved scent for daily wear.

Fragrances that Resonate with the Cool Water Vibe:

1. Nautica Voyage by Nautica : A clear contender when thinking of aquatic fragrances , Nautica Voyage offers a salty sea breeze and apple top note, followed by a blend of green leaves and mimosa. The base consists of musk, cedar, and amber, making it reminiscent of Cool Water’s marine freshness.

2. Acqua Di Gio by Giorgio Armani : Another iconic fragrance in the aquatic family, Acqua Di Gio combines sea notes with lime, bergamot, and orange. While it’s unique in its own right, its watery freshness and woody undertones often draw comparisons with Cool Water.

3. L’Eau d’Issey Pour Homme by Issey Miyake : A complex fusion of yuzu, bergamot, lemon, and tarragon at the start, followed by spicy and woody notes, and then a base rich in amber and musk. Its aquatic and woody profile provides a similar feel to Cool Water, albeit with a unique twist.

4. Bvlgari Aqva by Bvlgari : This fragrance opens with mandarin and petitgrain and swiftly moves into a seaweed heart, finishing with a woody base. Its marine character is undeniable, making it resonate with fans of Cool Water.

5. Perry Ellis 360° for Men by Perry Ellis : Combining a mix of juniper berries, lemon, and lavender at the top, with a heart of sage, cardamom, and freesia, and finishing with a vetiver, musk, and pepper base, this scent evokes a fresh and oceanic vibe akin to Cool Water.

Conclusion:

While Davidoff’s Cool Water remains a timeless classic in the realm of aquatic fragrances, the world of perfumery offers a plethora of scents that capture the same spirit of the ocean. Whether you’re on a quest for a change or merely wish to explore fragrances with a similar sentiment, the options above can be a great starting point. Always remember, the beauty of fragrances lies in their ability to resonate on a personal level. The best way to find your next aquatic love is to dive in and explore.

Our Verdict of Nautica Voyage

Presentation.

Nautica Cologne for him presents in an understated, crystal-clear flacon.

Sleek with clean-cut lines, the simple rectangular receptacle has rounded edges and a silver cap. The bottle’s minimalist design exudes elegance and classic style and comes packaged in a deep blue carton reminiscent of the sea. Additionally, the box bears the Nautica logo – a small yellow sailboat.

If you are always on the go, this bottle will not be a hassle to take with you since it’s small and compact.

As for the fluid, it boasts enchanting baby-blue tones, echoing the nautical theme. The fragrance is available in various sizes; 50, 100, and 200 ml bottles (1.6, 3.4, and 6.8 oz).

Back To Contents

The scent of Nautica cologne invokes a fresh, salty, and romantic oceanic breeze laden with herbs and woods. The aroma fans to life man’s natural desire to measure himself against the raw power of the wild.

What Does Nautica Voyage Smell Like?

Nautica Voyage smells fresh and clean . Additionally, you’ll pick out hints of green, fruity, aqua, and woodsy flavors.

This cologne welcomes you with cool notes of fresh green leaves and apples. The heart captures a delicate, drenched mimosa fused with watery lotus, while the base contains amber, moss, and woody accords.

A deep harmony between the sharp head notes and musky undertones results in the well-balanced composition. Not only that, the exciting combination of natural essences creates a fragrance with a calming effect while the apples add a hint of sweetness.

In the drydown, Nautica Voyage turns somewhat woody thanks to cedarwood, but it remains predominantly green, albeit with a trace of muskiness.

Performance

Nautica Voyage’s performance does not disappoint. The scent lasts a decent 7 hours or so with a solid initial projection. It then settles into a skin scent but remains noticeable. If need be, you can re-apply the scent for a more enduring aroma.

Nautica Voyage is not a complex formulation. The linear concoction progresses without surprising twists, with the green feel and cooling effect lasting throughout the performance.

This Eau de Toilette is not overpowering either. On the contrary, the captivating cologne is mass-appealing, attracting compliments wherever you go. For optimal performance, allow yourself 4-5 spritzes though there’s no fear of over-applying this light perfume.

Pro Tip : You can extend the lifespan of your favorite scent by spritzing your pulse points. That said, always remember that with fragrance, less is more. For more insights on how to wear cologne right, check out this post on Scent Selective .

Versatility

Occasion-wise, Nautica Voyage is highly versatile. It works pretty well as an office scent and transitions effortlessly to after-work drinks, a date, or formal settings. Still, the best time to wear this cologne is during the daytime, when you plan to be outdoors, lounging at the poolside, or hitting the beach.

Besides, hot temperatures over summer require a refreshing fragrance, and that’s what Nautica cologne offers. The uplifting cologne will help you get through the day smelling nice and fresh. In other words, it is one of the best summer scents you’ll ever encounter.

As far as colder weather is concerned, we wouldn’t recommend Nautica Voyage because it lacks the depth, coziness, and woodiness of a winter fragrance.

To summarize this Nautica Voyage cologne review, Nautica Voyage EDT is crisp, bright, and airy with woodsy undercurrents. If you are a man who sets his own rules, then you will enjoy this cologne. While it comes at a low price point, it’s a high-quality scent from a reputable company.

A young man starting out on his fragrance journey will find Nautica cologne a good starting point. It’s easy to wear, inexpensive, smells terrific, and is perfect as a daily go-to. In simple terms, it’s a solid investment.

You can’t err with Nautical Voyage Eau de Toilette. It’s a definite must-have, particularly if you consider yourself a carefree man who enjoys exploring nature. We highly recommend this best-selling scent as a safe blind buy , meaning you can even surprise a friend with a bottle.

Nautica Voyage Cologne Reviewed: Bargain or Waste of Money?

The right fragrance can boost your confidence and leave you ready to face the day. It's no wonder, given that scent is one of our most powerful senses.

This post may have affiliate links, meaning we earn a small commission on purchases through the links (at no extra cost to you). This does not change our opinion but does help support the site. Thank you!

Nautica Voyage's aroma is fresh and invigorating, thanks to the mix of natural elements like cedarwood and water lotus. But there's so much more to this cologne than only that.

Nautica Voyage Cologne Bottle

Founded in 1983, Nautica has a long-standing tradition of excellence . The brand's founder, David Chu, was driven by a simple mission — to bring the inspiration of life out on the open sea to everyday life. The company first began offering only outerwear. Since then, it's expanded to encompass a range of fashions, plus accessories, homewares, and (of course) fragrances.

Nautica Voyage was launched in 2006 with the support of famed perfumer Maurice Roucel. The fresh fragrance stays true to the original vision of the Nautica brand's founder, giving off clean-cut aquatic scents . So is this Nautica cologne a good one? Absolutely. You can count on this reputable brand.

Nautica Voyage Eau De Toilette

Fragrance Breakdown

The biggest question on your mind is probably, "What does Nautica Voyage cologne smell like?" We'd tell you it's like a sea breeze on your face, but that would simplify this complex cologne a tad much. So here are the basics.

The formula has top notes of green leaves, apple, and lotus and base notes consisting of cedarwood and amber. This balance of sharp yet musky accents makes for a finely balanced blend.

Overall, this eau de toilette gives you a fruit-forward scent . The unique mix of natural elements also gives this fragrance an almost therapeutic effect (think aromatherapy relaxation). Cedarwood has a calming effect, while apples add sweetness.

Cedarwood

The mood it conveys is bright and airy, not dark and murky. You can expect a crisp profile with woodsy undertones. If you're looking for something sultry and heavy, this is not the right pick for you.

Presentation

Nautica is an established brand with nothing to prove. This is evident in this Nautica cologne bottle. It's packaged in a sleek and simple clear bottle, rectangular with rounded edges. The crystal bottle makes for a streamlined, elegant appearance, accentuated by the silver cap.

There's no crazy shapes or trinkets to complicate matters. The simple bottle is even compact enough to easily slip into your pocket on the go. Last but not least, the box the fragrance comes in speaks to its inspiration — a simple deep blue, like the sea itself.

Boat in Ocean

Given Nautica's stellar reputation, it should come as no surprise that this fragrance is long-lasting. Expect a strong scent for about four hours after the first spritz. It will become more muted after that point — but you'll still have a hint on you.

If you're planning a long day that takes you straight from work to dinner and want to reinvigorate the scent, simply pack the bottle with you. As mentioned, it's small and compact enough to allow for easy traveling. For added longevity, combine it with the Nautica Voyage body spray.

Where to Wear It

If you prefer scents that aren't too weighty, this Nautica cologne is a great pick. The scent isn't too overpowering, allowing you to wear this one whether you're headed to the office, hanging at home, or — you guessed it — lounging on your boat. In short, it's an all-rounder.

Beach

Since it's small and compact enough to slip in your pocket, you can even make this a day-to-night scent. Spritz it on in the morning before work and then give yourself a refresh before you head out to drinks after the office.

Real versus Fake?

There's nothing worse than getting excited about a fragrance and then inadvertently buying a fraud. Unfortunately, there are plenty of fakes on the market to beware of. How can you be sure your Nautica cologne is the real deal?

First, check the box. It should be darker blue on top and a lighter blue on the bottom. The words "NAUTICA VOYAGE" should be written on the front (and spelled correctly!) in white text. Finally, a small yellow sailboat (the Nautica logo) will be evident on the side.

Nautica Blue

Nautica Colognes: Blue vs Voyage

If you are a die-hard Nautica cologne fan, odds are you've already tried Nautica Blue. So now you're wondering: Which is better Nautica Blue or Voyage? It's a tough call. These are two of the best-selling fragrances ever released by the brand.

The Nautica cologne, Blue, was Voyage's predecessor, released in 2005. It has top notes of peach, pineapple, and bergamot, complemented by smoother base notes of sandalwood, musk, and cedar . The sweet-smelling aroma is a bit heavier and lacks some of the "fresh" feelings of Voyage.

Ultimately, it's a matter of personal preference. Both scents are by Nautica, a reputable producer, and respected brand. You'll get great quality either way. If you want something more versatile and light, Voyage is likely better for you. For something a bit more powerful, try the original Nautica Blue if you’re looking for the best cheap fragrance for a tight budget .

Island

The Final Verdict

Now, you'll be well equipped with basic information to determine whether this fragrance is for you. If you're looking for a versatile scent for everyday wear, this fragrance will do the trick. It truly is as refreshing as a salty sea breeze, reflecting the fragrance's nautical inspiration.

Best of all, this scent won't break the bank. It's one of the best chap fragrances you can get your hands on, offering a quality scent from a reputable manufacturer.

There's a lot of information packed into the above guide. Here's a recap of the essential highlights:

  • A fruit-forward scent, mixing natural elements of cedarwood and amber with green leaves, lotus , and apple.
  • Sleek, simple bottle, easy to take on the go.
  • The longevity of three to four hours, making it not too musky or overpowering.

Has this Nautica cologne piqued your interest? Try the scent out for yourself.

17 Best Colognes (Nautica Voyage vs Davidoff Cool Water)

Top Colognes for Men 2016

Top Colognes

I’ve included a list of some of the best-selling colognes on the market. These have been popular for a few years, so you won’t be taking your chances on an unproven or unpopular men’s fragrance. If you haven’t been getting a lot of dates lately, you need a sure hit.

Popular Colognes for Men

  • Acqua Di Geo Cologne by Giorgio Armani – There was a time when every other man in a bar was wearing this cologne. That obviously means most guys think it smells pretty good, and women give positive feedback often. If you don’t mind risking having the same scent as a lot of other guys, Acqua di Geo has notes of citrus, jasmine, wood, rosemary spice, and ocean breezes. If you don’t want to take any chances, go with Acqua di Geo.
  • Abercrombie Fierce Cologne – From the Abercrombie & Fitch company, Abercrombie Fierce is a citrusy men’s cologne which is bold and certain to draw attention. Fierce is a clean-smelling aroma with musky tones, but it’s a warm and seductive fragrance.
  • Cool Water for Men by Davidoff – Cool Water is a top cologne on the market, often used by men who keep a rotation of fragrances. Davidoff’s Cool Water has been around for 20+ years, so this is a fragrance which has stood the test of time. Cool Water Cologne includes jasmine, sanda, musk, oakmoss, and lavender. It’s masculine, yet it’s easy on people with allergies.
  • Bvlgari Cologne – Bvlgari Aqua Cologne is an aquatic odor best fit for spring & summer activities, which avoids both musk and floral overtones. Ingredients include mandarin, petit grain, and mineral amber. The comparison is naturally to Acqua Di Geo, but if you can get an Italian bottle instead of the American import, you might prefer Bvlgari (yes, Bvlgari is the old Roman way to spell Bulgari). The American Bvlgari Aqua Cologne isn’t quite as good, since it’s weaker, but it’s still a nice scent.
  • Eternity Cologne by Calvin Klein – Eternity by Calvin Klein has been popular since the late-1980s, so it has impressed several new batches of young men. Fragrance notes include rosewood, sage, “greens”, basil, and crisp jasmine. If you hate citrusy colognes, then Eternity Cologne is the one for you. This is a strong scent, but not an overwhelming one. Eternity Cologne is in the Fragrance Hall of Fame, while the designer (Carlos Benaim) has won awards for designing Ralph Lauren Polo Blue, Prada Perfume, and Calvin Klein Euphoria.
  • Polo Blue Cologne – The Polo Blue scent by Ralph Lauren is supposed to be “aquatic”, with a combination of verbena, velvety moss, washed suede, spicy basil, a hint of musk, and clary sage. Polo Blue is a casual, yet elegant mens fragrance. It’s not likely to offend, but has a distinct smell. Isn’t too musky and Polo Blue is good for those with allergies to mens fragrances. If you date a girl who is allergic to your cologne, try Polo Blue for Men by Ralph Lauren.
  • Versace Eau Fraiche Cologne – Designed over ten years ago, Versace Eau Fraiche fragrance remains popular today, and has been compared to a masculine counterpart to the Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue for Women perfume. (Not sure about that one. Never noticed it myself.) Versace Eau Fraiche Cologne includes a lot of fragrance notes, including amber, sage, cedar, sycamore, musk, rosewood, and tarragon, along with lemon essence and star fruit. This creates an interesting blend of citrus scents and earthy tones. In my experience, this fragrance is a little weak, though it smells nice, so only wear it when you are expecting a shorter date of 3-4 hours. Never wear it on a work shift.
  • Burberry Cologne for Men – From the same makers as the famous Burberry London for Women. Succeeds in being long-lasting, but retaining its subtlety. Includes notes of bergamot, cedarwood, wild roses, green mandarin, “oriental woods”, nutmeg and ginger. Once again, this mellow men’s cologne is gentle and fresh-smelling. Also consider trying Burberry Touch for Men.
  • Nautica Voyage Cologne – Nautica Voyage is often compared to Cool Water by Davidoff. Nautica Cologne tends to be a cheaper alternative for those men who want those ocean scents, but don’t want to go with a cologne that every other men in the room is wearing, such as Acqua Di Gio.
  • Lacoste Essential Cologne – You’ll find the top notes of Lacoste Essential to be fresh and citrus-y. Middle notes contain more woodsy aromas, while the base notes are musky, yet subtle. A number of people claim this odour contains peppery hints, but many more comment on the freshness. Don’t worry about muskiness.

More Mens Fragrances to Consider

  • Armani Code Cologne
  • Paris Hilton Cologne (no, really)
  • Lacoste Red Cologne
  • Euphoria Cologne by Calvin Klein
  • Drakkar Noir Cologne
  • Kenneth Cole Black
  • Dolce & Gabbana Cologne

This should give you a representative cross-section of the men’s cologne industry. My suggestion to you is not to buy one cologne and use it all the time, but to buy smaller bottles of a number of different scents and switch them out, like you would a shirt or a pair of jeans. Women expect their men to be unpredictable and having an unpredictable scent is a subtle way to trick up the senses. You can sometimes find several men’s fragrances sold in a pack, especially if you find a designer which has several highly-rated men’s colognes (like Calvin Klein).

If you’re still not sure, to to the fragrance counter and test out a few of these which sound best to you. Don’t have the lady spray on a few of them and buy one or more immediately, though. All you’ll be smelling are the top notes. Walk around the mall for an hour, then see what the middle notes (and perhaps base notes) smell like. Then you’ll know better what you’re going to be wearing around all day, every day.

Nautica Blue vs Nautica Voyage My Comparison

Share now or save for later!

When I first heard about Nautica fragrances I thought, Hmm, just another American sportswear brand releasing sporty fragrances that smell exactly the same. But after trying on a few, I was proven wrong. I quickly became hooked to some as they were exactly my type of scent.

Contrary to popular belief, Nautica colognes don’t smell the same. They all have their own unique qualities, just like the Nautica Blue and the Nautica Voyage. I put together this roundup to help clarify the difference between these two bestsellers, but also to let you know which one I think is better.

Nautica Blue

Nautica Blue

Nautica Blue belongs to the Aromatic Aquatic family. Launched in 2005, this Eau de Toilette for men concocted by Maurice Roucel is still one of Nautica’s best sellers.

The ocean-inspired Nautica Blue opens with citrusy top notes of bergamot, mellowed down with pineapple and peach tones. As it develops, subtle middle notes of Water Lily and jasmine reveal, and eventually the composition dries down to sweet base notes of sandalwood, musk, and cedar.

I first tried Nautica Bleu three years after it came out. I was instantly drawn by the shape of the bottle resembling a spinnaker sail. At first spray, I smelt familiar notes: a fresh, clean, masculine, and musky scent that I get from almost all blue bottles in any brand. After a few hours, I started to like it better, and then that was it. Gone. There was a slight trail of the Blue somewhere on my clothes and my, skin but nothing striking or turning heads.

Being light and not overpowering means I can wear it in the hot and humid weather, and being so cheap (I find it for $12) means I can reapply as much as I want to. I have no trouble wearing it during the day, to work, at the gym, right after showering, or as casual wear. I, however, prefer stronger and long-lasting scents for the evenings.

There are a few men’s colognes that I found that are pretty similar smelling to Nautica Blue. Dolce&Gabanna Light Blue Intense, for example, a woody aquatic scent, opens similarly to Nautica Blue, with citrusy notes such as grapefruit and mandarin orange. Bvlgari Aqua Pour Homme is the classic fresh aquatic cologne that most blue bottles smell like and so is the case with Nautica Blue. Davidoff Cool Water is this fresh and woody cologne that reminds me of racing, sea, waves, and the ocean, that’s exactly what Nautica Blue represents.

Azzaro Chrome has also similar notes and opens with bergamot and pineapple, just like the Nautica Blue. Lastly, if you like Nautica Blue but find it a little too gentle on your skin, try Ralph Lauren Polo Sport. Its fresh, energizing, and woodsy notes will never disappoint. If you’ve tried any of these and you like the fresh and aquatic scent, you have an idea how the Nautica Blue smells. Except, Nautica Blue does not perform as well as the alternatives mentioned.

The takeaway from Nautica Blue

To sum it up, Nautica Blue is an inexpensive cologne for men that I don’t mind having in my collection. It is a safe buy, smells fresh, clean, and sporty, and it makes me smell good for a few hours without being offensive to the people in my surrounding. But unless you don’t mind reapplying, Nautica Blue’s performance leaves a lot to be desired.

Nautica Voyage

Nautica Voyage

Nautica Voyage was launched in 2006, a year later after the Nautica Bleu. The nose behind this cologne is again Maurice Roucel. Unlike the Aromatic Nautica Blue, the Voyage is a Woody Aquatic fragrance that opens with fruity and green top notes like apple and green leaves. There is a warm heart note of mimosa and lotus which blends well with the base notes of musk, cedar, amber, and oakmoss, leaving a heavy musky trail behind.

To me, Nautica Voyage smells romantic, fresh, sweet, and masculine, a scent I like to wear on summer nights. Surprisingly enough, it lasts me the entire evening and goes well into the morning but is much softer, almost powdery.

It is an inexpensive cologne, one I can grab when I am in a rush. It never fails to keep me fresh.

However, over the years the scent has been reformulated and while the previous bottles had a metal cap the new ones come with a plastic cap. Although they smell very similar, the performance in the reformulated is not as long-lasting as the previous batches. But I still get about 5-7 hours of freshness.

The cologne reminds me of a Tommy Bahama for Men because I can smell the exotic, sweet, and summery notes. With Nautica Voyage being less sweet and overpowering. Though it’s a perfume for women, there is something in Escada Into The Blue that is so similar to Nautica Voyage. It could be the green notes in the opening or the woodsy tones in the dry down. In any case, I find that this scent smells somehow very similar to Nautica Voyage.

The takeaway from Nautica Voyage

All in all, Nautica Voyage is a classic fresh scent from Nautica, and at $20 it is worth a blind buy. Longevity and sillage are moderate, lasting you long enough to run errands, or go to after-work cocktails. It is not even nearly offensive, which means you can even wear it to the gym, or at your doctor’s appointment.

The verdict: Nautica Blue Vs Nautica Voyage

With all being said, now it’s time to decide which of the two best sellers is the right one to buy. Both Nautica Blue and Nautica Voyage have a strong opening, one that resembles a clean and fresh shower gel. In a few hours the Nautica Blue slowly disappears, while the Nautica Voyage lasts throughout the day and well into the night and the following morning, with no need to reapply.

When I wear Nautica Blue I feel energetic, outgoing, and sporty, I feel like going on an adventure hiking the mountains or sailing, whereas Nautica Voyage gives me a more sophisticated feel. Hence, I prefer to wear it on a romantic date, night out with friends, and at work meetings.

Both of these colognes are popular, and a good reason for that is the low price. While Nautica Blue comes in 0.5oz, 1.7oz, and 3.4oz, and goes for $20 for the large size, the Nautica Voyage is available in 1.6oz, 3.38oz, and 6.7 oz for $35, making it a better value for money.

While both scents suit me well, I still prefer Nautica Voyage better. I fancy warm woody notes and this cologne hits those spots. It is impossible to hate, and I get a lot more compliments on the Nautica Voyage compared to Nautica Blue. What’s more, Nautica Voyage lasts me throughout the day, and goes into the next morning, without having to reapply. I wake up to a soft, musky, floral scent that I’d like to keep just a little longer before I jump in the shower.

If you are after a fresh cologne, that is safe to wear any time of the day or evening, with a good performance, and one that won’t hurt your budget, then Voyage is one of the best choices out there. It is versatile and appealing and will win you tons of compliments.

  6. Nautica Voyage Vs Davidoff Cool Water : r/fragrance

I dont mine having little less projection or longevity if it smell better. I think it does personally. It's more on the side of slightly sweet with a nice greener smelling orange citrus touch to it with some amber coming in to make it just a tiny bit warm. In my opinion nautica voyage is played out.

  7. Nautica Voyage- Thoughts? : r/fragrance

It also works as a fragrance that one can use without thinking too hard, as it has nice versatility. However, Voyage has weak longevity, and is one of the most common fragrances out there. Not a fan of the rest of the Nautica scent line. The problem is all of them are fresh or aquatic scents that work best in the summer.

  8. Nautica Voyage Vs Davidoff Coolwater : r/fragrance

It's famous in fragrance groups because it's an affordable dupe of Creed Green Irish Tweed. It was made by the same perfumer, Pierre Bourdon. Voyage is newer than Cool Water, it's a fruity floral with a lot of geranium to make it smell more masculine. I prefer Cool Water, Voyage smells a bit like shampoo. 9.

The Nautica cologne, Blue, was Voyage's predecessor, released in 2005. It has top notes of peach, pineapple, and bergamot, complemented by smoother base notes of sandalwood, musk, and cedar. The sweet-smelling aroma is a bit heavier and lacks some of the "fresh" feelings of Voyage. Ultimately, it's a matter of personal preference.
