Velliangiri Hills Trek: Women are not allowed to trek this mountain

Velliangiri mountains are one of the most difficult trekking spots.

"Women Between 10 to 50 age are Not allowed". Although you can Pray in the temple but aren't allowed to climb the mountain.

Best time to trek- The trekking season is from February till May every year.

About Trek- Located on the Western Ghats, the hills are a part of the famous Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, the Velliangiri Hills are considered as the Kailash of the South. The hills are a popular pilgrimage spot as well. Dedicated to Swayambu, which is a form of Lord Shiva, the temple on Velliangiri Hills is a preferred meditation spot for sages, Siddhas, and siddhar. Legend has it that this is temple was where the Lord himself performed a cosmic dance which was requested by Uma Devi, his consort. Of all the festivals, Maha Shivratri is celebrated with much ardor and faith here. The lush hills are a trekker's paradise as they are located at an altitude of 2438 meters, so do carry your walking shoes when you make your way to this picturesque landscape.

Gandhipuram

Buses are available from Gandhipuram bus stand for every one hour. You can take the bus from Kanchipuram bus stand and reach there in about one hour.

Initially, you can visit the Adhi yogi temple and spend time their for about 2 hours. Then reach at the bottom of the hills via a share auto which costs around Rs.30 Per head. Shops will be available at the bottom of the hill where you can have food and buy the things you missed to carry on.

"Always try to start the trek by night"

That's because you have to trek barefoot, yes barefoot! So it would be really difficult to trek in the daytime as the surface will be very hot. You can very well go with your shoes and slippers on if your purpose is solely trekking. 99% of the people would prefer barefoot as its considered to be a sacred place and they go on to the top of the mountain to worship God.

Things you should know before the trek-

Not even a single plastic material is allowed to carry on the mountain(except water bottle). At the bottom of the mountain, guards will thoroughly check you and even the biscuits covers are not allowed. But.. don’t worry…. they have paper bags, in which all your materials will be transferred and will be returned to you.

Buy a bamboo stick at the bottom of the hill which costs around Rs.20, which will be helpful for you while getting down from the mountain and always have a torchlight with you personally.

A Mountain of a Temple

Velliangiri is famous for the seven hills trek. To complete the first hill it would take 30–45 mins if you trek nonstop, probably one of the hardest hills out of the seven. It will all be steps, steps, and steps. Once you reach the first hill, you would find shops where they sell a lot of eateries and drinks. You can spot similar shops now and then till 5th hill. The second and third hill will be of both steps and plains, comparatively easier than the first one. It would take another 45–60 mins to complete them. The fourth and fifth hill would be mostly plain and you would enjoy walking a bit after all the hard-fought trek climbing up thousands of steps. Will take another 45–60 mins.

Starting point 9:00 in Night

The sixth hill is another hard hurdle, you have to climb down and then up through the hill. It will be very very challenging and difficult. Sixth and seventh are also the most difficult part of the trek. Once you start climbing the seventh hill, you won't feel like stopping even though when your legs hurt so bad. You will feel you have reached the top, but it will take forever to reach. After another 45–60 mins you will reach!

Yes! Finally, at the top of the hills, you can see god statues, caves, godman's, etc. You can get a blessing from them, donate if you like, sit down, relax, feel good, feel accomplished, feel better and then you can start your trip down the hills.

It is located inside the forest and one must obtain permission before entering the forest. Visitors are only allowed by being escorted by a forest guard into the forest. This area of forest has lot of animal movements; especially elephants. There are lot of incidents of elephants attacking humans, so it is always advisable to obtain permission and get some guards accompanying while entering the forest. About 5 Kms trek through forest is required to reach the falls from nearest road point. One can get private vehicles to reach forest trek point from Narisipuram town.

Perumal Peak or Perumal Malai Peak is a high peak at kodaikanal in the Perumalmalai hills, which are part of the greater Western Ghat mountain range in Tamil Nadu. It is one of the popular places for trekking in Kodaikanal and also one of the top attractions you must include in Kodaikanal packages . The trek begins from the foot of the Peak near Perumal Malai Village which is 11 km from Kodaikanal. The trek distance is about 7 km one way and takes about 3-4 hours one way. Most of the trekking stretch is of moderate difficulty while few parts are little steep. 5. Thalaiyar Falls / Rat Tail Falls

At a distance of 40 Kms from Kodaikanal & 485 Kms from Chennai, Thalaiyar Falls, also known as the Rat Tail Falls is the highest waterfalls in Tamil Nadu and third highest falls in India. It is also one of the popular sites for trekking near Kodaikanal. With a height of 975 feet (297 meters), the falls is visible from a great distance on the ghat road towards Dindigul. This falls is considered inaccessible to the general public, as there is no access road to it. However, one can reach these falls with 6 kms trekking after 34 Kms of road journey on ghat road from kodaikanal . The trek duration is around 2-3 hours one way. The trek is considered to be of moderate difficulty. The very edge at the top of the falls has a concrete wall. One can walk along the wall and get near the center of the falls. The water here is considered polluted and it's better to avoid bathing here. One can catch Dindigal / Madurai buses from Kodaikanal, get down at the ghat road after 34 Kms and trek down to the falls from here. There are no sign boards but can get done at the mile stone which shows distance to Kodai as 34 km.

At a distance 50 km from Namakkal, 87 km from Salem, 135 km from Trichy & 395 km from Chennai, Kolli Hills or Kolli Malai is a small mountain range located in Namakkal district of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the popular places to visit near Trichy . These hills are situated at an elevation of 1000 to 1300 m and cover an area of approximately 280 sq km. One of the tallest sub-clusters of mountains in the state, the region surrounding Anamalai Hills is home to a number of great trekking trails including routes inside the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, a paradise for birding enthusiasts.

Jawadhu Hills

Located in the Alangayam Reserve Forests near the city of Vellore, Jawadhu Hills has become one of the most popular destinations for trekking in Tamil Nadu in recent years, thanks to a renewed interest from trekking clubs in nearby cities such as Chennai and Vellore . The picturesque hills are located at an altitude of 700–1,000 metres and are home to several trekking trails with various levels of difficulty. One of the most popular trails in the region is the Jawadhu Hills Ultra trek, which is organised by a Chennai-based trekking club and spans over 37 kilometres.

Palani Hills

Palani Hills Reserve Forest is one of the most popular places for forest trekking near the tourist hotspot of Kodaikanal. With an elevation of more than 2,500 metres, the Palani Hills RF has moderate to cool weather all through the year, making it conducive for trekking. The region is also home to a large number of lakes and waterfalls and even a picturesque dam in the Parappalaru Dam.

Dolphin’s Nose Trek, Kodaikanal

Yet another extremely popular trek near the tourist hotspot Kodaikanal , the Dolphin’s Nose viewpoint is best known for its incredible panoramic views of the region. Located at an altitude of nearly 1,500 metres, the Dolphin’s Nose trek is a relatively easy trek and it takes about an hour to reach the viewpoint from the starting point. The two main attractions of the trail, apart from the Dolphin’s Nose viewpoint, are the Mountain Beauty viewpoint and Echo Rocks. For those looking for a little more adventure, there is also an extended trail from the viewpoint leading to Vettakanal.

Perumadu Trek, Yelagiri

Being the closest hill station to Chennai, Yelagiri draws a lot more tourists and is also extremely popular among trekkers thanks to a large number of beautiful trails in the region. The most popular among these is the Perumadu Trail which leads to the picturesque Perumadu Waterfalls. The route is relatively easy and suitable for all ages and measures about two kilometres one way. Other famous trekking routes in the vicinity include the Sunset Point Trek and the Swamimalai Trek, which is considered to be among the toughest treks in Yelagiri.

Mudumalai : An abode of serenity nestled in Nilgiri Hills is the village of Mudumalai. Being 18 km away from Kodaikanal, the peak can be reached easily 

Kolli Hills : Named after the goddess who protected sages residing on the hills from the attack of demons, Kolli Hills is the ideal destination for those in search of an arduous trek and an enthralling view on the way. Often underexplored, Kolli Hills and its forests reveal the secret of Agaya Gangai waterfalls and Seekuparai and Selur Nadu viewpoints to only those who are daring enough to take on gruelling quests.

Yelagiri : A quaint little cluster of 14 villages dotting the hills of the Western Ghats - that is Yelagiri for you. The countryside, decked with rose gardens, offering views of lush green valleys, and awash with flower-scented breeze, is a favourite spot for trekkers. Numerous trekking trails through the woods will take you to treasures like the riveting view from Swamimalai and the mystic waters of Jalagampara Falls that the locals believe to have the power to cure various ailments. An adventurous expedition that exposes you to the unique and rare customs, traditions and architecture of the local tribes, and the beauty of Yelagiri will be an experience of a lifetime.

Doddabetta : 10 km away from Ooty lies Doddabetta, the summit of Nilgiris and the highest peak in Tamil Nadu. The grassy slopes of Doddabetta offer you a captivating view of the shola forests – an ecosystem unique to the Western Ghats. The trekking route through the reserved forests blesses the lucky with the prospect of spotting some rare species of flora and fauna. Approximately 10 km of easy-to-moderate difficulty level of the trekking will take you to the top of the peak where you can sit back and enjoy awe-inspiring scenery while watching the hazy clouds pass by.

Kalhatti : Just about 13 km away from Ooty town is the charming little village of Kalhatti. A 2 km trek from the village through eerie woods and rocks will take you to the majestic Kalhatti waterfalls. Believed to be the abode of Saint Agastya, Kalhatti falls will be an enchanting experience to anyone in search of a place to be in solitude and harmony with Nature. The soothing sound of the crashing waters and the rich silence of the woods make it an ideal spot for birdwatching.

If what you have in mind is a leisurely stroll through the winding roads and the eucalyptus groves, in order to cherish the picturesque landscape and to have a brief glimpse of the cultural history of Ooty, then head to Toda village. Approximately 6 km from the heart of Ooty town is Toda village, a settlement of the Todas who are the indigenous people of the Nilgiris. A walk through the pine forests and valleys will take you to the hamlet where the warm hospitality of the Todas will welcome you. From there the villagers will guide you to the Toda temples which were once used as dwellings. The sacred valley with its unique topography is awe-inspiring and commands utmost respect from visitors. Queering the family: Tamil Nadu shows the way

On October 17, 2023, the Supreme Court of India delivered its much-awaited judgement in the case of Supriyo @ Supriya Chakraborty & Another Vs. Union of India , wherein it refused to recognise marriage equality for queer persons. The court was unanimous in its holding that there is no fundamental right to marry. However, it clarified that transgender persons within the binary of male and female who were interested in heterosexual marriages could marry under existing marriage laws. While a minority of the five-judge bench recognised a fundamental right to civil union and the right of queer parents to jointly adopt under secular adoption laws, the majority disagreed. All the judges however agreed that enabling marriage equality would require large-scale legislative changes to India’s family laws and thus the legislature was best suited to achieve this.

Two significant family law developments followed the Supriyo case. First, the state of Uttarakhand passed its own Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and second , the state of Tamil Nadu indicated that it would recognise queer relationships in the form of a Deed of Familial Association (DFA).

It should be noted that when it comes to family laws, both the Parliament and State Legislatures have the competence to enact or modify them – meaning that there can be central laws as well as state laws on the issue. In this context, Uttarakhand and Tamil Nadu present two contrasting case studies on family law reforms. While the former chose to enact a regressive UCC which falls short of its proclaimed goals of gender justice and uniformity, the latter attempted alignment with the Supriyo judgement by providing for a framework that would recognise queer relationships.

Tamil Nadu has indicated its intent to recognise queer relationships in its draft gender and sexual minority policy . While the final version of the policy is not in the public domain, key features of the draft policy have been noted by the Madras High Court in an order passed in November 2023. This policy was authored by a committee composed of queer persons and subject to several rounds of consultations with members of the queer communities, a welcome move which must inform the approach of other states. The draft policy provides for recommendations across several areas, including legal recognition of gender identity, employment, healthcare, education, law enforcement, and family. On the issue of family, the draft policy focuses on two core issues – protection of queer persons from natal family violence, and recognition of queer relationships through the DFA and other forms of existing relationship establishment methods.

Queering family: Beyond the heteronormative gaze

Family laws in India deem only the heterosexual marital relationship as worthy of legal recognition and rights. Thus, the legal imagination of family involves a male and a female person united by marriage and largely related to their children by biology. Consequently, intimacies that do not fit this narrow norm are either marginalised or invisibilised by the law. The marriage equality case attempted to expand the existing conception of family by demanding a right to marry for all, irrespective of gender identity or sexual orientation. However, barring a petition filed by a group of queer-feminists which argued for the recognition of atypical families, most petitions stuck to the age-old formula by treating the marital unit as the central feature of the family. In terms of strategy, such an approach makes sense as it is easier to demand that the court grant queer persons entry into a pre-existing institution as opposed to create new categories, an exercise which is beyond the court’s competence.

However, such an approach also suffers from several shortcomings because it participates in a project which hierarchises certain forms of intimacies over others by arguing that marriage must be elevated to the status of a fundamental right simply because it has historically been privileged by the State. In this context, the Supreme Court’s refusal to recognise marriage as a fundamental right is welcome as it keeps the door open for a claim of relational equality wherein intimacies beyond marriage are also deemed worthy of recognition and protection. A relational equality approach centres the autonomy of a person where access to rights is not contingent on the person marrying or partaking in a monogamous sexual and romantic relationship.

It is in this context that Tamil Nadu’s draft gender and sexual minority policy requires attention. The draft policy does not simply make a claim for marriage equality for queer persons but nudges the State to reimagine the family beyond kinship and marriage. By doing so it focuses on the functional conceptualisation of the family, namely what families should do, as opposed to the form of the family, namely what families should look like. A functional approach thus seeks to centre values of mutual care, love and dependence as definitive of a family, as opposed to only marriage and biological relatedness. The draft policy thus marks an entry into a radical possibility of family law expanding beyond its narrow normative foundations.

First , the draft policy recognises that natal families can be sites of violence and harassment for queer persons. The idea that the natal family is by default a loving and mutually supportive unit is challenged in light of lived experiences of queer persons. In fact, the family in India is in many ways an extension of the patriarchal State as it serves as a site of sexual division of labour, violence, and endogamy. The fact that marital rape is not criminalised, inter-caste marriages are rare, and honour killings are common in India speaks to this reality. An acknowledgement of this, accompanied by a duty on the State to provide safe homes and support to queer persons who want to escape their natal homes goes a long way in protecting their rights.

Second , the draft policy does not make a case for queer marriage but instead demands recognition of queer relationships through a DFA. Marriage laws in India suffer on several counts. They centre sexual relations as key to a valid marriage, prescribe cumbersome conditions for exit, and disregard the autonomy of parties by retaining outdated provisions such as restitution of conjugal rights. Instead of demanding entry into a flawed institution, the draft policy requires the State to legislate afresh on the DFA.

This gives the State an opportunity to reimagine the family beyond the conjugal unit, ensure a progressive family law framework, and opens doors for legal recognition also of non-marital, non-sexual and non-romantic intimacies. Finally, the draft policy requires the State to recognise ‘other forms of existing / legacy relationship establishment methods.’ While the language in the policy does not clarify the scope of other forms of relationships to be recognised, it requires the State to legally acknowledge and extend rights to family formulations that may fall outside the so-called norm. Consequently, atypical family formations such as Hijra or transgender households and queer community living arrangements may benefit from this policy. Such an approach to regulating the family benefits not just queer persons but persons of all genders and sexualities as it paves the way for relational equality in family laws.

A case for engagement

Historically, the state of Tamil Nadu has been an outlier when it comes to progressive family law reforms. For instance, in 1967, Tamil Nadu amended the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 to recognise the concept of ‘self-respect marriages’ which did away with the requirement of Brahminical rituals associated with Hindu marriages. As the draft gender and sexual minority policy is yet to be finalised and placed in the public domain, one cannot foresee the manner in which queer families will be extended recognition. At the same time, it makes room for a progressive and radical approach to family law reforms, one which is informed by a queer politics where alternative ways of being, loving and living are deemed legitimate and worthy of protection and rights.

Following the Supriyo judgement the central government has set up a High-Powered Committee to look into rights of queer persons and persons in queer relationships. An engagement with this committee as well as state legislatures must draw from the progressive precedent that Tamil Nadu has set. While the journey to queering the family will no doubt be a long and difficult one, it is critical for us to demonstrate to the State that the same is not impossible.

Experiencing Vellore’s Hidden Secret

Not many people know that there are treks in the Vellore district of Tamil Nadu. 

The Vellore Amirthi Forest Trek takes you through the middle of the Amirthi Wildlife Sanctuary. Connecting the most tribal villages in the region, this trek has been designed in collaboration with the Forest Department. 

You camp in the remote village of Keelkollai, untouched by the modern world. Here, we have the unique opportunity to immerse ourselves in their culture and traditions, learning firsthand about their way of life. 

During the evening, you can explore the village and just sit down on one of the big boulders to witness a magical sunset happening across the horizon. Watch the sky change its colour with a setting equivalent to the Himalayan villages.

Amirthi has the biggest forest in the Vellore district of Tamil Nadu. This sanctuary is bounded by the Tellai Range Forest towards the north, while the South-Eastern side, is covered by the Puthur Range Forest.

When you wake up in this forest setting, a melodious dawn chorus of birds blossoms up the forest. As the sun rises and the rays of light pass through the trees, you descend to engulf the setting of Amirthi Forest. 

Hidden inside the sanctuary, you also visit the Amirthi waterfalls. The small yet charming waterfall is a nice place to take a break and listen to the water trickling down, tumbling serenely. 

Along with this, trekkers get the opportunity to camp in the remote village of Keelkollai. The setting of the village, with the farmlands, a big valley, and green hillocks, is a sight to experience and witness. The straw huts, hay for cattle, and wooden fences take you to a land that we have often forgotten to observe and experience. 

This trek is designed considering all age groups in mind. From energetic youngsters to seasoned trekkers, the Vellore Amirthi Forest Trek welcomes all ages (7-70) for a memorable weekend adventure near Chennai or Bangalore.

1 . the forest walk in the heart of netravali sanctuary.

A big opportunity for trekkers is to walk through the heart of the Amirthi Wildlife Sanctuary. This sanctuary is situated under the Javadu Hills and close to the Sandavasil ranges.

2 . Trekking through remote tribal villages

The trek through Vellore Amirthi Forest takes you through some of the most quaint villages, like Nekini, Keelkollai, and Poosanavalasai, which are nestled inside the forest sanctuary.

3 . Camping at Keelkollai with a grand view

Another exciting experience for trekkers will be camping at the village of Keelkollai. You get to see the entire expanse of forest cover while setting up your tents! 

If you are lucky and the villagers are growing some flowering plants or mustard, then the entire land will be covered with a bright golden yellow similar to marigolds.

Copper prices up Rs 100/kg, motor production in Coimbatore grinds to a halt

COIMBATORE: Industrial units in Coimbatore, particularly MSMEs, are in dire straits as the volatility in copper prices has affected their production heavily.

MSME units, particularly wet grinder and pump motor manufacturers, who use copper as their major raw material, say that the change in copper price has been frequent in recent times and they are struggling even to match the operating cost of the end product with the price offered by buyers.

They pointed out that the copper price has increased by Rs 100 per kilogram from Rs 950 to Rs 1,050 in the last 30 days between April 22, 2024 and May 22, 2024.

J Leela Krishnan, a wet grinder manufacturer in New Siddhapudur in Coimbatore, said, “Compared to May last year (2023), the price of copper has increased by Rs 300 from Rs 750 per kg. It takes around 45 days to deliver manufactured table-top grinders after getting a job order from a buyer or dealer. Buyers expect us to deliver the product as per the agreement. Due to fluctuations in the raw material price, MSME operators struggle to match the cost. Due to a hike in price for the end product, dealers are reducing the volume of orders given earlier.”

“Our unit’s turnover was up to Rs 5 crore in 2020 but this year the turnover has come down to Rs 1 crore. I have been struggling to run the business in the recent period. Most unit operators are afraid of taking job orders as prevailing challenges make it difficult to get even 5% profit from a job order,” he added.

Kanhaiya K Vasani, a businessman in copper wire distribution in Coimbatore, said, “The copper market has become more volatile in recent times. On May 22, the price of copper based on the price fixation by London Metal Exchange Rate was Rs 1,050. The price had come down to Rs 1,010 on May 23. Again, the price will surge tomorrow.

There are two prime reasons for the price volatility in the market: (i) increasing production of electric vehicles in which copper usage is high, and (ii) more investment in copper on the stock market in the recent period. Small-medium operators have been impacted by the price volatility. Large-scale operators of pump set motors are not affected as they have shifted to Copper-clad aluminium (CCA) wire, which is priced Rs 350 per kg, as an alternative to copper wire.”

V Vignesh, president of the Southern India Engineering Manufacturers’ Association (SEIMA) said, “Though CCA wire can be used as an alternative to copper wire, it cannot be used for motors above 1hp. Due to prevailing volatility in copper price, our members have decided to increase end-product cost by 6% from June.”

J James, president of the Tamil Nadu Association of Cottage and Tiny Enterprises (TACT) said, “Due to abnormal fluctuations in the raw material price, MSME operators have been affected badly after the electricity tariff hike for fixed charge by 430% from Rs 35 to Rs 153 per kW. MSME industries cannot sustain in Coimbatore unless the government intervenes with regard to the raw material cost.”

P Shanmuga Siva, General Manager of the District Industries Centre (DIC), coming under the Department of Industries said, “The price of copper is less in Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat due to the geographical location. Hence, they can manufacture with less operating cost than manufacturers in Coimbatore. However, the manufacturers in Coimbatore are holding on in the market due to the efficiency and effectiveness of the end product.

To support the manufacturers, the DIC has sent a recommendation to the state government for setting up raw material banks for copper and iron and steel. It is under consideration by the state government. Once it is approved, the raw material will be distributed to the manufacturers on a need basis so that they can compete with the other markets.”
