Madagascar Tours & Safari Packages

There is no other place like Madagascar. That might sound like brochure talk, but it is true. Madagascar is unique. Of roughly 200,000 known animal species found in Madagascar, 150,000 are endemic, meaning they occur nowhere else in the world. The same applies to the island’s weird and wonderful flora. How this incredible biodiversity came about is much up for debate. But there is nothing debatable about the sense of wonder one experiences when setting foot on this magnificently intriguing country, often referred to as the eighth continent.

6 Questions About Madagascar Tours

Ariadne van Zandbergen

Answered by

Ariadne van zandbergen.

madagascar jungle tour

Why should I go to Madagascar?

“There are many good reasons to go to Madagascar. The immense tropical island of Madagascar is a special destination. For some people it’s the idyllic white sandy beaches and turquoise waters that are the main attractions. Others are lured by the fascinating animal world. There are cuddly lemurs, chameleons ranging from tiny to huge, slinky fossas, leaf-tailed geckos (the ultimate masters of camouflage), and much more. The wildlife is protected in a network of about 50 parks and reserves. These natural places are as diverse as the animals that live in them. Habitats range from pristine rainforest to dry spiny forest, dominated by the weird-looking octopus trees. Then there are oddities, such as the serrated limestone formations known as tsingy, and picture-perfect landmarks, such as the Avenue of the Baobabs.”

Where should I go on a Madagascar trip?

“Madagascar is a very big island and there is a surprising number of places to visit. When going on a road trip, you’ll probably need to choose between highlights of the north or the south. You can’t really do it all in one tour. If you incorporate one or more flights, your options to mix and match increase. Most tours start in Antananarivo. A popular tour takes you to Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, the best place to see the world’s largest lemur, the indri. From there you follow the N7 south, spending time in Ranomafana National Park to see a large variety of lemurs and reptiles, and Isalo National Park for some hiking in spectacular sandstone formations. The tour ends on the west coast at Toliara or Ifaty, which are great places to relax on the beach. Highlights of the north include the rainforest of Amber Mountain National Park with its waterfalls, crater lakes and abundance of chameleons. Ankarana Special Reserve with its tsingy landscapes is another not-to-be-missed destination up north. Both parks can be visited from Madagascar’s most popular beach destination, Nosy Be. A great bush-and-beach combo is a tour combining time in two properties run as all-inclusive bush lodges: Mandrare River Camp at Ifotaka Community Forest and Manafiafy Lodge at Sainte Luce reserve. You’ll be spoiled for choice of guided activities on this tour. There’s lemur watching, night walks, cultural tours, whale watching, kayaking and much more.”

How long do I need in Madagascar?

“Unless you’re mainly going on a beach holiday in Madagascar, you’ll ideally need at least 12 days to visit some of the highlights. Many roads are in bad condition and the driving time between parks is often long. You might have to overnight in small towns along the way. Luckily, this is never wasted time. You’ll learn about the traditional cultures and the many crafts and arts the Malagasy people are known for. To take in the main highlights of the north and the south of the country, you’ll need about 20 days, even when making use of a couple of domestic flights. With limited time available, a return trip from the capital city, Antananarivo, to Andasibe-Mantadia NP is a great option. The driving time each way is three hours, and you can see a lot on a 4-day tour to this popular park. You’ll have a chance to see different lemur species and a variety of reptiles and amphibians. A night walk is a great opportunity to see some nocturnal species. This tour is a great introduction to Madagascar or a possible stopover on an Africa trip of a lifetime covering highlights of different countries.”

What is the best time of the year for a Madagascar safari?

“Madagascar can be visited at any time of the year. However, the wettest months of January, February and March are perhaps best avoided. September to November is a lovely time for a beach holiday, but the cool, dry months from May to October are better for hiking. The coldest months aren’t ideal to see some animals. Therefore, the best wildlife-viewing months are the shoulder months of April, May, October and November. These months are warm enough for all animals to be active, but not too wet. Having said all this, you have to keep in mind that there are wide regional variations. The east of the island sees the most rain, so avoiding the peak of the Wet season is more important here than in drier parts of the country.”

Do I need to be physically fit for a Madagascar safari?

“As all wildlife viewing in Madagascar is done on foot, you will need to have a reasonable level of fitness for a safari on the island. The rainforest parks tend to be wet and the paths can be very muddy and slippery. Walking in the dry parks in the southeast of the country is usually easier. There are different trails with different lengths and difficulties available in all the parks. Even the short trails are very rewarding and give great opportunities to see lemurs and other wildlife. There are also many sanctuaries and private reserves in the country where it is sometimes possible to see animals within the immediate vicinity of the lodge. So, while you’ll get the most out of a Madagascar safari with a level of fitness allowing you to take on some of the longer hikes, you can in fact see a lot without having to walk very far. However fit you are, it is important to come well prepared with good shoes, a hat and rain gear. A walking stick can also come in handy to keep you steady on slippery slopes.”

How much will this tour cost?

“There are many variables determining the price of a Madagascar tour. However, as a guideline, you can expect a 12-day mid-range package to start at around US$2,000 per person. The level of accommodation is a big factor. Taking a few local flights can save valuable time otherwise spent driving long distances, but it also increases the overall cost. Another variable is the choice between a private or group tour. Spending time on the beach is usually cheaper than moving around on tour. Taking all these variables into account makes for a wide range of prices.”

Everything You Need to Know

From lush, green rainforests to stark limestone tsingy formations to the dry spiny desert, Madagascar has a huge range of ecosystems, geography, and microclimates—and every area supports its own endemic species. Berenty, in the south, is the best place to see dancing sifaka lemurs, while Ankarana, in the north, is home to crowned lemurs. See below to compare the differences between the major National Parks and know what to expect from each.

Madagascars National Parks Map.

Madagascar has a tropical climate with many microclimates, so the weather can vary greatly depending on the time of year and region of the country. The north and south tend to be warm and dry, while the highlands, including the capital, Antananarivo, are cooler. The east is mostly rainforest, where wet weather is always a possibility.

The ideal time to visit is between April and November (there are heavy rains from December to March, so travel during that time is not recommended). Each season is unique and offers its own attractions. See below to understand the differences between each month and what to expect with each.

Madagascar has a wide array of things to see and do when you visit, and our itineraries make sure you get to experience the best of it all. We put together a list of the top things you have to do when you visit.

Depending on the adventure you choose, you can visit a school that has been a success story for nearby families, travel to a fishing village by outrigger canoe, talk with local female weavers and see their hand-loomed designs, visit with traditional wood carvers and paper makers, dance to live Malagasy music, and visit a wildlife research center. See below to learn more about each of these experiences.

REVIEWS FROM OUR CLIENTS

The trip was excellent; I’d highly recommend it. Really fun…the local guides and Trip Leader were all wonderful. I am so glad Wilderness Travel took care of everything.
Our Trip Leader was amazing. We couldn’t figure out how he timed everything so perfectly! He’s a treasure and a fabulous representative of WT and Madagascar.
A wonderful experience that exceeded my expectations—and I’m picky! I like the small group size, and there was ample opportunity both to hike and to mingle with locals at markets and in villages.
Amazing! High quality outdoor experiences, lodgings, and cuisine—then listening to the haunting calls of the indri echoing through the jungle.
This was our first experience with a group tour—what a great introduction! We did this trip to see wildlife, and were delighted with what we got to see. Beautiful country, wildlife, and people—thank you for making our first group trip unforgettable!
Our local guides clearly loved their country, and were amazing at finding and showing us the birds and animals.
I thoroughly enjoyed this trip. There was a great mix of experiences in Madagascar. Obviously a lot of planning went into making it so memorable. Thank you!
It was a true adventure! The country was gorgeous to see and experience, the people of the country were friendly, and the experience with the lemurs was off the charts!
Our Trip Leader and local guides’ depth of knowledge was unbelievable. That’s one reason I chose a tour company for Madagascar—it would be very difficult to obtain such quality guiding on ones’ own.

Johannesburg

Arrive in Johannesburg, South Africa. Gather this evening for a welcome dinner and briefing. Overnight at Intercontinental OR Tambo Hotel .

Antananarivo

This morning, fly from Johannesburg to Antananarivo (Tana), Madagascar. Crossing the Mozambique Channel, a journey of little more than 250 miles, you’ll approach the western edge of the “Big Red Island” en route to the capital. Driving into Tana one is struck by the stark differences from the African continent: rice paddies, worked by men and their Zebu ox-drawn ploughs, flank the city, with the architecture a combination of French colonial and traditional Merina, all of which imparts a strangely Asian feel to an island so close to the African mainland. Dinner and overnight at the Relais de Plateaux  on the outskirts of Antananarivo.

Berenty Reserve

After breakfast, board your charter flight to Ifotaka, then transfer to Berenty Private Lemur Reserve. On the transfer to Berenty, you’ll notice that the native vegetation has been replaced by extensive sisal plantations, stretching as far as the eye can see. Berenty Private Lemur Reserve is an island of natural habitat in this sea of cultivation, and one of Madagascar’s most legendary wildlife sanctuaries. Berenty is justly famous for its lemurs, not only because its deciduous gallery woodland is home to six species but particularly for the ease with which they can be seen and appreciated in the wild. Undoubted favorites are the Ring-tailed Lemurs and Verreaux’s Sifakas. The bands of cat-like, quizzical Ringtails are often the first to steal any visitors’ hearts but their appeal is easily matched by the strikingly-patterned Sifakas, with their soulful expressions and bipedal locomotion. In addition to these two diurnal lemur “super-stars”, Red-fronted Brown Lemurs also occur in large numbers in the woodland. Overnight at Berenty Lodge .

Although Madagascar is most famous for the spectacular lemurs that have adapted to a daytime existence, a number of species of these primitive primates remain denizens of the night. On spotlighting walks in the “spiny forest” adjacent to your lodgings, search for White-footed Sportive Lemurs and two species of Mouse Lemurs. A further highlight at Berenty is a roost of Madagascar Flying Foxes, where over 300 of these impressive fruit bats, sporting four-foot wingspans, spend their day jostling for position in the treetops. Amongst the birds, the pheasant-like Giant Coua is often encountered stalking along the paths, whilst both the camouflaged Madagascar Scops-Owl and the handsome White-browed Hawk-Owl are commonly found asleep at their day roosts in the gallery woodland. Reptiles are well represented by the bizarre Three-eyed Lizard and huge Warty Chameleon. Overnight at Berenty Lodge .

Antananarivo / Andasibe-Mantadia National Park

After a final morning at Berenty, return to Ifotaka and board your charter flight back to Tana. On arrival, turn eastwards for the drive across the open landscape of the Horombe Plateau, which offers insight into the traditional lifestyle of the highland Merina people. Terraced rice paddies, tall earthen houses with thatched roofs, and roadside markets displaying a wide variety of farm produce, are all set against a backdrop of golden-yellow grasslands and bare granite inselbergs.  By the afternoon, you’ll arrive in the small town of Andasibe, or Perinet as it’s still commonly known, gateway to the magical Andasibe-Mantadia National Park. Your accommodation for the next two nights is a delightful lodge, located overlooking a lake at the edge of the forest. Wildlife is often right on your doorstep: fluorescent green day geckos scuttle on the walls of the chalets, Madagascar Wagtails flit along the paved walkways and if you are very lucky, you may hear the eerie calls of Indri right from your cabin. Overnight at Vakona Forest Lodge.

Andasibe-Mantadia National Park

You’ll have two full days in the superb Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, which protects a large expanse of some of Madagascar’s most pristine primary forest, a sanctuary for the richest assemblage of birds and other wildlife on the island. Though it has only relatively recently been opened to the public, the slightly higher-altitude Mantadia sector is now an essential destination on any trip to Madagascar, having gained a reputation as an excellent site for a handful of scarce forest-dwelling lemurs. Not least amongst these is the exquisite, gentle, and highly localized Diademed Sifaka, although you will also be searching for the more widespread Black-and-white Ruffed Lemur, Gray Bamboo Lemur, Red-bellied Lemur, and Common Brown Lemur. The Andasibe-Mantadia area is also a rewarding site for nocturnal exploration, with such charismatic nocturnal lemur species as Eastern Woolly Lemur, Furry-eared Dwarf Lemur, and the diminutive Goodman’s Mouse Lemur all possible, along with a plethora of chameleons, geckos and frogs. Overnight at Vakona Forest Lodge .

Andasibe / Antananarivo

This morning, make a special effort to see the park’s most famous resident: the huge, singing Indri, largest of all extant lemurs. Standing beneath a family group of these magnificent creatures as they issue their peculiar, Humpback Whale-like songs is one of Madagascar’s most unforgettable wildlife experiences. While the rainforest lemurs are the undoubtedly highlights of your time in the Perinet area, you will also be on the lookout for a profusion of smaller evolutionary oddities, like the peculiar Giraffe-necked Weevil, the impossibly cute Lowland Streaked Tenrec, the seriously weird Sikora Leaf-tailed Gecko, Madagascar Tree Boa, and the giant Parson’s Chameleon, heaviest chameleon species on Earth. Andasibe-Mantadia also offers the best rainforest birding in Madagascar, and you can expect to see such avian jewels as Blue Coua, Blue Vanga, and Madagascar Cuckoo-Roller. In the afternoon, retrace your route to Tana, overnighting at the Relais de Plateaux .

Antananarivo / Anjajavy

Fly northwestwards to your final destination in Madagascar, the magnificent wilderness of Anjajavy, for a three night stay at Anjajavy Lodge .

Situated on the island’s northwest coast, in the so-called Sambirano Domain, this 1,000-acre private reserve covers a ruggedly beautiful area of secluded bays flanked by baobab-studded semi-deciduous forest. Wildlife is abundant, with the ethereal Coquerel’s Sifaka, boisterous troops of Common Brown Lemur and flocks of brilliant-green Grey-headed Lovebirds resident right in the grounds of your comfortable lodge. Nearby caves in the limestone karst boast the fossilized remnants of a long-extinct lemur, as well as an impressive collection of stalagmites and stalactites. Spend time along the forest trails, where Collared Iguanas loaf in sunny spots and Madagascar Plated Lizards scuttle through the leaf litter. With luck, you may locate the goblin-like Milne-Edwards’s Sportive Lemur at its day roost in a tree cavity. Explorations after dark are equally productive and may reveal the eye-shine of a darting Golden-brown Mouse Lemur, Madagascar Nightjar hawking for insects or perhaps a sleeping Warty Chameleon. Overnights at Anjajavy Lodge .

After a final early morning at Anjajavy, fly back to Antananarivo in time to connect with international flights homeward.

Our Madagascar Adventure Is a Standout in an Outstanding Land!

  • Our Unique Itinerary Maximizes Your Time in Nature Compare itineraries carefully: on more typical tours, you may lose several days crossing the country on long drives, or your travels may be confined to fewer regions. With us, you’ll spend more time in distinctly varied wild places, rather than traveling great distances between them. By including chartered flights, we avoid long, tiring days on rough roads, and we access a greater range of rarely visited areas.
  • A Very Small Group (10 Max) Ensures Intimate Wildlife Encounters The best wildlife experiences are always more likely to occur in the presence of fewer people. We explore Madagascar with no more than 10 travelers—likely the smallest group you'll find—ensuring a quieter, more wondrous experience in nature.
  • Chartered Flights are Key to a Superlative Experience  When other companies include flights, they typically use the national carrier, Air Madagascar, with a terrible track record for delays and cancellations. Travelers on Air Madagascar can often wait a full day or more in airports, or be re-routed in a manner requiring a 24-hour drive on very poor dirt roads. To be certain we don’t waste valuable time for wildlife viewing, we have arranged our own private chartered flights. This is a costly commitment, but it ensures we get where we want to be in a convenient and timely manner, so you don't lose out due to airline caprices.
  • Travel in the Company of a Top Expedition Leader, Plus Expert Local Guides Compare the quality of guides and guest-to-guide ratio: You'll travel with a top Expedition Leader plus a seasoned local guide who knows the country like none other. Our Expedition Leader provides expert tour management and the integrated perspective of a professional naturalist, while our Malagasy guide adds in-depth local knowledge, helping to maximize the variety of wildlife you’ll see. We're also joined by regional park guides in several places, who add even more depth and expertise. Our Expedition Leaders also get exclusive training and resources from WWF scientists—a Nat Hab exclusive! See Expedition Leader bios and traveler comments regarding the quality of our leaders.
  • We Tailor Activities to Varied Physical Abilities We often divide our groups on hikes in order to accommodate different physical capacities. Since we explore with a complement of guides, from our own Expedition Leader and in-country partner to various local guides in the parks we visit, we're able to split up based on physical challenge, ensuring you won't feel let down or frustrated when other travelers' abilities may not match yours (though all guests must be able to meet our minimum physical requirements for this trip).
  • Unique Accommodations Close to Nature—Including Anjajavy Lodge We emphasize secluded lodging on private reserves and/or close to protected national parks. From bungalows tucked in the rain forest to your own eco-villa on a nature reserve accessible only by private airstrip, our focus is on intimate natural settings. Anjajavy Lodge is a special highlight: Madagascar's only Relais & Chateaux property, its guests have access to more than 17,000 acres on a private reserve containing 1,800 floral species and a multitude of rare wildlife. At Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, our stay on a private estate near the park includes a visit to its small lemur preserve, where we get very close to Madagascar’s famous icons.
  • Explore a Biodiversity Hotspot Before the Rest of the World Gets There Nat Hab is one of few tour operators offering naturalist-guided trips to this distinctive destination. And our itinerary is as diverse and uncommon as Madagascar itself. We explore dense highland rain forest, moss- and lichen-laden cloud forest, and arid sandstone canyons. On the Indian Ocean coast, search for rare frogs and geckos on night walks, spot several varieties of endangered lemurs in forests, and scan coastlines for pods of dolphins and migrating whales. With Nat Hab and WWF working together to create this unique itinerary, you won’t find a more comprehensive nature adventure.
  • Be Part of a Conservation Success Story It's not an exaggeration to say that without our presence, and that of other eco-conscious travelers, most of Madagascar's remaining wild habitat would be gone. By demonstrating the economic value of nature tourism, bringing visitors to observe the intriguing species found in Madagascar's remarkably biodiverse forests, we show local communities the value of protecting their wild surroundings. Conservation travel is imperative to the future of nature in Madagascar. And when you travel with us, you're central to that mission.
  • Our Quality-Value Guarantee Ensures Your Outstanding Nature Adventure With Natural Habitat Adventures, you receive our exclusive guarantee that clearly states that we will meet the high expectations we set forth in our promotional materials. To our knowledge, this is the most ambitious guarantee made by any adventure travel company. Read our important promise.
  • Feel Good About Your Carbon-Neutral Journey We care deeply about our planet, as we know you do. When you travel with us, the carbon emissions from your trip are 100% offset—including your round-trip flights from home. Natural Habitat Adventures has been the world’s first carbon-neutral travel company since 2007.

See dramatic 'forests' of limestone pinnacles at the World Heritage Listed Tsingy de Bemaraha, witness one of Africa's most iconic sights at the Avenue of the Baobabs and enjoy the palm-fringed beaches and turquoise waters of dazzling Nosy Be.

Marvel at the island's diverse landscapes and abundant wildlife in its spectacular collection of national parks, including Isalo, Andringitra and Ranomafana, where you can practice your photography skills on tropical flowers, ancient trees, spirited lemurs and deadpan chameleons.

Leaders in responsible travel

Responsible travel practice is at the heart of our Madagascar adventures. Our trips provide a true wilderness experience by viewing wildlife in their natural habitat, supporting the conservation of rare fauna and flora and aiming to protect the natural environments and local communities.

Development of local communities

Our local partner assists families to develop their homes to cater to travellers. They then train the families in hospitality so that they are ready to welcome tourists into their homes and benefit from the income. Our itineraries are developed to utilise these homestays.

Protection of wildlife

Our forest trekking guides ensure that travellers stay quiet, walk in a single file line and do not leave the trail in order to minimise the disturbance of wildlife and to preserve the vegetation.

Habitat preservation

While we participate in reforestation projects, all guides are trained to preserve the native plants and trees.

In cities or large towns you will be accommodated in 3 star, twin share properties that are centrally located, comfortable and reliable.

We offer two styles of camping; fully supported and semi-participation. Both styles feature quality two person tents erected in scenic wilderness.

Permanent safari camps

Like a tented hotel room, this is the perfect way to experience the African wilderness. We use 3 star comfortable properties that reflect the character of the area.

Madagascar has two main seasons: a hot, wet season from November–April, and a cool, dry season from May–October. However, climate varies across the island based on elevation and proximity to trade winds/monsoon winds. The south is protected from moisture-bearing winds and remains arid, with the southwest in particular being almost desert-like.

Tropical cyclones are a major feature of Madagascar’s climate. Forming far out in the Indian Ocean, they bring heavy rains and destructive flooding to the east coast between December–March.

July is the coolest month, and December/January are the warmest months. Generally speaking, temperatures decrease with elevation, being coolest on the plateau and warmest on the northwest coast.

In Antananarivo, average daily temperatures vary from a minimum of 16.6°C (61.9°F) to a maximum of 27.7°C (81.9°F) in January, to a minimum of 10.3°C (50.5°F) to a maximum of 20.2°C (68.4°F) in July.

Time in Madagascar

Madagascar is +3 hours ahead of UTC/GMT

French (official), Malagasy (official), English

Malagasy belongs to the Austronesian language family, a widely dispersed group that includes Japanese, Filipino/Tagalog, Malay/Indonesian, Hawaiian, Rapa Nui and many other languages throughout Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

French has been an official language on the island since 1958; it is used as a language of education, law and business and is widely spoken among Madagascar’s educated population.

English is spoken by an increasing number of people, but it is not yet widespread. Knowledge of basic Malagasy and/or French will be very useful throughout the island.

Additional foreign languages are spoken by the island’s Indian, Pakistani, Chinese and Comorian communities.

Malagasy Ariary

It is advisable to carry Euro’s in cash, mostly in notes smaller than €100 as banks, hotels and change bureaus don’t readily accept notes larger than €100. Do not try to change money "on the streets" as the black market is illegal and you risk having your money stolen or being arrested and fined by plain-clothes government agents.

Banks are generally open from 0800-1100 and from 1400-1630, Monday-Friday.

You can also change money in your hotel - the rate of exchange is about 5% less than that of the bank. You should always get a receipt when changing money.

Try to ask for some small denomination notes in the local currency as change is often scarce in the rural areas

Major credit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are accepted in larger hotels and some shops in main cities. Expect larger merchant fees.

ATM’s are located in major towns and cities only (ie. Antananarivo, Morondava, Antsirabe, Fianarantsoa, Toliara). Visa is accepted at all ATM’s. Mastercard is accepted at some but not all.

Madagascar Lemurs & Wildlife EcoTours

A wonderland of biodiversity, Madagascar's 1,000 endemic species include dancing sifaka lemurs, wailing indri lemurs, colorful chameleons and stealthy fossa cats. Nearly all of its reptile and amphibian species, half of its birds, and all of its lemurs are unique to the island.

Our Madagascar itineraries carefully combine rainforest, dry spiny forest, Tsingy “stone forest”, rivers, islands and marine ecosystems to deliver unparalleled wildlife sightings – including up to 40 lemur species and countless chameleon species possible! We avoid the small, commonly-visited touristy parks with overly habituated animals that trap even the most informed travelers. Instead, our itineraries offer the best possible selection of national parks for travelers who seek a more pristine, authentic, biodiverse, uncrowded and non-commercial wildlife adventure, packed with our legendary wildlife expertise. And you won’t have to sacrifice comfort! We’ve included some of Madagascar’s most outstanding lodges and carefully arranged the majority of travel by charter flights and scheduled flights to avoid the long, rugged drives of 12-24 hours that Madagascar is notorious for. Wildlife Tours to Madagascar

Often referred to as the Eighth Continent, Madagascar is the world’s fourth largest and oldest island and, after millions of years of isolation, is truly unlike anywhere else on Earth.

Reef and Rainforest is the United Kingdom’s longest established and most experienced specialist tour operator for Madagascar, having first offered tours there over thirty years ago. It takes a long time truly to know the island, which is bigger than France and hides many attractions. Our unsurpassed knowledge of Madagascar results in superlative itineraries for you to enjoy.

We first went to Madagascar in 1992. The country was under a rigid communist dictatorship: it had terrible hotels and few visitors. Now there is improved infrastructure and a good range of medium- to high-quality accommodation. And of course, its unique wildlife is as wonderful as ever and a visit by you will help preserve it for the future.

Natural history travel has emerged over the past 30 years as a vital source of income for Madagascar. By visiting Madagascar, you contribute directly to the conservation of its precious remaining forests with their unique wildlife, and the welfare of its people who are among the poorest (and friendliest) in the world. Your presence facilitates the hiring of park rangers who guard the precious reserves from illegal logging, slash-and-burn farmers and bush-meat hunters. Fees paid to local guides and hotel staff salaries percolate down through local communities. Isolated lodges such as Anjajavy and Eden Lodge fund local schools and clinics. It all adds up.

Wildlife-wise, Madagascar must be one of the most extraordinary destinations in the world. The three main ecosystems comprise tropical rainforest, dry tropical deciduous forest and the unique spiny forest found only in Madagascar’s far southwest. There are healthy coral reefs and stunning white sand beaches to enjoy along the coast, plus huge unique karst limestone outcrops known as tsingy and fascinating cultures to discover.

Nearly all Madagascar’ staggering biodiversity is found nowhere else on the planet, much of it threatened with extinction. Wildlife highlights undoubtedly include the mysterious nocturnal aye aye, iconic ring-tailed lemur, the beautiful sifaka lemurs, large tailless indri, tiny mouse lemurs, charismatic fossa, giant and miniature chameleons, cunningly camouflaged leaf-tailed geckos, colourful frogs and fantastically varied endemic birds, many families of which are found nowhere else on Earth.

Our expert English-speaking guides are tried and trusted to deliver a marvellously memorable journey through a country that really could be the Eighth Continent. Come with us to Madagascar and you will see – in the best possible way – what makes the The Big Red Island so special.

Travel & climate, when to visit madagascar.

Travel between the end of April and end of November is preferable to avoid the wet season, with September, October and November being the very best months for animal activity. Notwithstanding some geographical variations, June to September normally offers dry, cooler weather. From September to November, many bird species are displaying, nesting and in breeding plumage, and baby lemurs can be seen clinging to their mothers. Try to avoid late December to early April – wet season.

There is one main bugbear when travelling to Madagascar – Domestic Flights. The main domestic airline, now called Tsaradia has in the past and to a lesser extent these days had a habit of frequently changing its schedules. Sometimes these changes are last minute, which can potentially cause disruption to an itinerary. The good news is that we are so experienced in sorting out the ensuing problems that most tours still run very smoothly. It takes years to “know” Madagascar, and you can be 100% sure that we do.

Madagascar reviews.

“It was a fab trip. Everything went very well in Madagascar. All the local guides were really good but special praise goes to [our guide] at Andasibe – so knowledgeable and interesting. He, like all the guides, showed a real love for the wildlife and environment. Excellent wildlife: highlights – fosas in daylight within 10 mins of the first rainforest walk, diademed sifakas, golden bamboo and ringtailed lemurs and giraffe necked weevil.

Madagascar Safari Holidays

Madagascar is a destination like no other and has even been named the ‘8th continent’ for its enchanting beauty and resplendent breadth of diversity. The only place in the world where you can see lemurs in the wild, Madagascar is home to a unique plethora of endemic wildlife. Boggle-eyed chameleons, dancing lemurs, and leaf-tailed geckos are just the start.

The Madagascar Safari Experience

  • This is no traditional African safari, swap the 4x4 with exploring on foot to allow for getting up close and personal with wildlife.
  • From the tiny egg-cup sized mouse lemur to the morning calls of the teddy bear-esque Indri, a safari to Madagascar offers something truly unique for the wildlife lover.
  • The East Coast is a hot spot for some world class whale sightings as humpback whales migrate through this eastern oceanic corridor, even using it for calving.
  • Visit the Avenue of Baobabs for an incredible photography location.
  • Discover the unique landscapes that Madagascar has to offer by hiking through the hot southern deserts and dramatic rock formations of Isalo.
  • From private islands to luxury retreats, there are many options available if you want to wind down at the end of your safari by the beach.

Why Natural World Safaris?

Our Founder & CEO, Will Bolsover, spent many years guiding in Madagascar, while several other members of the team have also now spent extended periods of time in the depths of the country. We have an in-depth knowledge and passion for this fantastic country, having several contacts and personal friends in-country who we can rely on day in day out. Our focus is wildlife, including up-close and personal encounters.

How much does madagascar cost.

A Madagascar holiday is still very good value for money, especially when you compare it to mainland Africa. For a 7-day safari in Madagascar, we recommend a starting price of £6,250 per person. If you are looking to stay in some of Madagascar’s most iconic and best loved lodges, you’ll need to increase the budget to £44,000 per person including private light aircraft and helicopter flights, intimate lemur encounters and private guides.

When to go on a Madagascar Safari?

The best time to visit Madagascar is from April to October. This dry season brings fewer rain showers, meaning optimal conditions for seeking out wildlife, hiking and enjoying the beach. Whilst Madagascar holidays can be enjoyed year-round, the principal wet season is from late December through to the month of March; often involving cyclones and is probably best avoided!  Read more about when to go.

Where to stay in Madagascar

From remote camping in undiscovered parks, to luxury beach hideaways and jungle lodges, Madagascar now has a great selection of truly diverse places to stay. If you are looking for primary rainforest, tropical coastlines, and truly wild lemurs, then look no further than Masoala Forest Lodge. A family run property owned by Pierre and Maria every guest is made to feel at home in thatched tented bandas overlooking the beach. For a luxury beach retreat, escape to the private island destination of Miavana with stunning villas and ocean views.  Read more about where to stay in Madagascar.

What to expect from a trip to Madagascar

MAD Madagascar Baby Ring Tailed Lemur Mlorenz

This trip was so meticulously designed and was perfect for a solo female traveler like myself - thank you so much! My guide, Tojo, and our driver were simply superb! They ensured that I got to see and do every single thing I wanted to.

Everything that was shown to me and described to me before the trip was exactly as it played out and I can humbly say that this trip exceeded my expectations. The guide we had was fantastic. He was not only knowledgeable with answers for every question and concern but his passion, pride, and love for his home was quite evident which made it easy to learn about Madagascar regarding the wildlife, the cities, the countryside, the people and everything else in between. Thank you for this experience and a special thanks to Toky, our guide who made this trip very special and to be quite honest, the best trip I have been fortunate to enjoy.

David was excellent and was very professional and courteous to communicate with. My trip to Madagascar was wonderful and easily a 10/10 experience. I enjoyed the landscapes and wildlife and our guide Toky went above and beyond to make sure we had a great trip - he even included extra night walks that weren't included in the itinerary. NWS is clearly committed to delivering quality trips with excellent guides and accommodations to beautiful destinations in the world.

We saw so many lemurs as mentioned in the itinerary and lots of other wildlife including chameleons! The tour was very well organised and we were treated with great accommodation. We felt safe and sure we were getting the best experience available in each location.

All in all, this was a great safari - highly recommended! Everyone we interacted with from NWS was friendly and helpful. This tour was reasonably priced for the high quality of its guides, accommodations, and local tours. The small group safari was the perfect size (for mobility, to encourage interaction, and to ensure that everyone got good looks at sometimes skittish wildlife). The NWS app was very helpful, and I referred to it frequently before and during the tour to check the itinerary, weather, map, etc.

We loved this trip and Masoala with incredible wildlife sightings. Our guide, Felix, was amazing. We had no idea the food would be so excellent at the lodge. The evening campfire, while a small detail, was a very nice touch and helped form relationships among guests and staff.

Madagascar is a fascinating but very difficult place to travel to. NWS worked with me to put together a really interesting itinerary. Lodges ranged from good to superb. Local guides were excellent. Tough place to travel. Glad I had their help.

Simply amazed. We had unrealistic expectations for this "adventure" but they were nevertheless exceeded. In almost every instance where it could have gone south...it went NORTH! All in my travel group were impressed by the superior service and experiences that were a direct result of our NWS itinerary. This experience set the bar. We don't know how any other service could exceed it for the things we like to do.

David was excellent in crafting a short safari that met the special requirements of our group, giving us a wonderful variety of wildlife experiences in eastern Madagascar. NWS were appropriately realistic in describing the resource challenges in the country, but nonetheless we enjoyed very comfortable accommodations, very good food and superb local guides throughout the week. Great service from NWS HQ and the high-quality local partners who provide the experiences.

Madagascar Safari Holidays FAQs

Can i drink tap water in madagascar.

No, we recommend that you always drink bottled, boiled or treated water during your time in Madagascar. You can buy purification tablets or iodine to treat water during your travels, and vitamin C tablets are good for hiding the taste. If you are buying bottled water, ensure the bottle is sealed when it is handed to you. Always ensure that any ice in drinks is purified or made from bottled water rather than tap.

Which languages are spoken in Madagascar?

The official first language of Madagascar is Malagasy, and the official business language is French. Your guides and some hospitality staff in hotels and lodges will speak English but speaking some basic French could come in handy.

What money should I take?

The local currency in Madagascar is Malagasy Ariary, although most major currencies are accepted. US Dollars and Euros are usually the preferred currency. There are not very many opportunities to change money in Madagascar, so when you arrive at the airport (or before you depart) try to change enough to last you at least a week. Credit card use is very limited throughout Madagascar (the most widely accepted is Visa), but very useful as a back up.

What is the food like in Madagascar?

Malagasy food is heavily rice based, influenced by the many cultures of Madagascar, including Indonesian and European. The closer to the coast you are, the better the seafood. In Antananarivo, as with many big cities, there is a huge variety in international restaurants and cuisine.

For those who eat meat, there are lots of pork, beef and fish dishes, including a traditional dish made from pork and cassava leaves. Vegetarian and vegan options can be quite limited - often there will be a choice of omelettes or spaghetti and sometimes there will be some sautéed vegetables on offer with rice and noodles. Let us know your dietary requirements in advance and we will do our best to arrange something for you in destination.

Is Madagascar safe?

Madagascar is one of the safest and friendliest countries we have travelled to. The locals, staff and guides are all welcoming and friendly, happy to answer your questions and keen to talk. Remember that Madagascar is a very poor country and there are some cases of petty theft in the capital, so make sure you don’t walk around flaunting jewellery or money. You must ensure, as with travelling in any destination, that you look after you belongings, keep money in separate places in case of loss or theft and ensure you’re not out alone at night. In regards to the wildlife, there are very few animals that pose a threat to humans. Listen to your guides, you will remain in safe hands.

Do I need a visa to go to Madagascar?

At present, tourist visas are required by all nationalities entering Madagascar. These can be gained upon arrival in Antananarivo, however we do recommend you look into obtaining it in advance. Visas for Madagascar are approximately EUR35 per person, to be organised on arrival at the airport, but things change regularly so contact your local Embassy for more details. Obtaining the correct visa is your responsibility.

Madagascar Adventure

14 days | spot lemurs and get dreaming on the beaches of this southern african gem..

madagascar jungle tour

Create your own wildlife-filled jungle jaunt through Madagascar on this 14-day adventure to the island’s hotspots. You’ll be lazing on white-sand beaches, exploring tropical rainforests and spending time with a huge variety of local wildlife, including the lemur – the island's most popular animal inhabitants. Dig a little deeper throughout your journey and interact with local communities, getting an insight into the day-to-day life of Malagasy and Betsileo peoples. Discover the French colonial influences in Antananarivo and Antsirabe, and get the chance to chill out in your own time. An eco escapade in Madagascar awaits, with local wildlife, beaches and a little adventure at every turn.

Trip overview

  • A wildlife lover's dream, count the species of lemur and other exotic animals you can spot as you explore the Anja Community Reserve, Ranomafana National Park, and Andasibe National Park.
  • Learn more about the important Malagasy process of silk production by visiting local village industries, where a cooperative of silk weavers uses their craft to preserve local tradition and provide for the future.
  • Support a noble cause while exploring the Mitsinjo Forest, a privately owned reserve that is not just a sanctuary for wildlife but also a beacon of community empowerment and conservation.
  • Join a guided night walk and be enchanted by the sight of nocturnal species like endemic butterflies, chameleons, and mouse lemurs.
  • Take a hands-on chocolate-making class with a local chef and learn the secrets that make Malagasy chocolate unique and delicious—and then sample your creations!
  • Although anyone with a good level of fitness should be able to partake in this itinerary, there are several challenging aspects: guided day walks through the many national parks can be hot and humid. Please ensure you bring sturdy walking shoes and comfortable clothes.
  • Road conditions in Madagascar are also notoriously poor. This means some of the driving days will be long as well as bumpy.
  • Sometimes you’ve got to rough it to get amongst it. Some accommodation inside the national parks is basic and may not have the creature comforts of hotels in bigger towns and cities. Be prepared for no wi-fi or air conditioning. But also for charming, tucked away locations you won’t quite believe are real.

Tonga Soa! Welcome to Madagascar. You'll start your journey in the country's capital – the bustling Antananarivo – a fun place to explore among rolling hills. You might like to check out the Musée de la Photographie, a small museum showcasing the history of Madagascar between 1850 and 1870 through a series of old photographs that have been assembled into short videos. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 5 pm, but if you arrive early, why not head to Analakey to visit the street markets or perhaps seek out a cafe to soak up the atmosphere? After, why not keep the introductions going with an optional dinner with your group at a local restaurant?

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Antananarivo - Ambohimanga Rova Tour (per person; maximum 4) (including entry, guiding & camera) - MGA 10000 - MGA15600
  • Antananarivo - Lemur's Park (Per Person) - MGA80000

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

After breakfast this morning and before your flight (if time permits, as flight schedules are subject to change) you’ll enjoy a heritage walking tour of the Old City, where you’ll learn a little more about the country’s history, marvel at the interesting architecture of the traditional highland houses and watch on as finely dressed locals pop in and out of Sunday church services. After exploring Antananarivo, we’ll board a flight to Tulear and onward to your hotel in Ifaty for the evening. The night is yours to sit back and relax or go out and explore the town – you’ll be delighted by your accommodation with a swimming pool, snack bar and restaurant, so you may choose to stay in, rest up and get ready for tomorrow’s adventures.

  • Bungalow (1 night)
  • Antananarivo / Tulear - Leader-Led City Tour - Free

Your travel time today will be approximately 3 hours. The itinerary for today is subject to change due to the constant shifts in flight times in Madagascar. If your afternoon flight is changed to a morning flight today, you have the option to do a walking tour of Tulear instead of Antananarivo.

Today is free for you to explore, adventure or relax as you wish. You might like to visit Reniala Private Park – meaning ‘mother of the forest’. This private nature reserve was opened in 2001 as a botanical garden, ornithological park and incredible baobab forest. Maybe you’d like to visit the Village des Tortues, a turtle breeding and conservation project or drop into the Honko Project and see the protected mangrove area that’s been set up to help reverse the degradation of the ecosystems here. Explore the Recycling Museum, which is dedicated to environmental protection, providing educational awareness for locals and tourists to learn about the efforts of waste management in the country and encouraging green and responsible consumption. Up for something a little more active? Take a traditional dugout (speedboat) out to the nearby reef and snorkel the day away on a guided excursion. As if this wasn’t already enough to choose from, if you’re visiting from July to August, you can also join a humpback whale-watching excursion in the lagoon.

  • Tulear - Recycling Museum - Free

Leave Ifaty in the early morning and head to Tulear, where you will stop to pick up food for lunch. Then, drive to the Antsokay Arboretum for a visit. The Antsokay Arboretum is a botanical garden with over 900 species of plants from southwestern Madagascar, 90% are endemic to the region and 80% are medicinal. Among these, many succulents are considered endangered. You can also see creatures that cannot be seen anywhere else in the world, like chameleons, boas, tenrex and birds, as well as other endemic species. In the afternoon, continue on to Isalo National Park.

  • Tulear - Antsokay Arboretum

Your drive today will be approximately 7 hours, not including stops.

After breakfast today, you’ll make tracks to Isalo National Park, for a full day of exploration within the park with your leader. Isalo is known for its variety of landscapes, from rainforests and rolling plains teeming with life to strange geological formations and deep-cut canyons. The park is home to over 80 species of birds, 30 species of reptiles and 14 species of mammals, including three lemur species – ring-tailed, red-fronted and the dancing sifakas lemur.

  • Isalo National Park - guided walk

Today, you’ll kiss Isalo National Park goodbye as you hit the road for Fianarantsoa – a colourful town known for its heritage site. Along the way, you’ll stop at the Anja Community Reserve. The forest in Anja was designated a protected area reserve by the Government of Madagascar in 1999. The reserve extends over 30 hectares and is enriched with all kinds of flora and fauna species, most notable for its dense population of semi-tame ring-tailed lemurs. Anja has become a vital example of how community management of natural resources can both effectively protect the area and benefit the community. Based on their individual skill sets, some locals work as guides, others work as spotters, and some perform administrative tasks associated with the reserve. The villagers will be your local guides as you explore the reserve.

  • Ambalavao - Antemoro Paper Factory visit
  • Ambalavao - Anja Community Reserve

Your travel time today will be approximately 8 hours.

Today you’ll explore the long, paved roads, labyrinths of small paths and old houses with flower-studded balconies and tiled roofs in the historical old city of Fianarantsoa. Then, visit a typical Malagasy village for an insight into how most of the island's population live, Explore the surrounding countryside, which is dotted with rice paddies and vineyards that produce Fianarantsoa's famous wine. You'll get a chance to sample local cuisine with a lunch stop in the villages. In the afternoon, you’ll travel to Ranomafana National Park. The area is a haven for small mammals, birds, reptiles and insects, as well as palms, bamboo, orchids and carnivorous plants. This park is home to several rare species, including 13 species of lemur, including the famous golden bamboo lemur, which was first reported in the area in 1985. Its presence is one of the main reasons why the government decided to protect this forest. With a little free time, you might consider visiting the thermal springs which the town is named after – located across the Namorona River. The outdoor swimming pool fed by the springs is also a popular spot to take a dip.

  • Fianarantsoa - Betsileo: village visit and walk
  • Ranomafana NP - Night Walk
  • Ranomafana - Station Thermale - MGA5000 - MGA5000

Your travel time today will be approximately 2 hours.

The Betsileo Village visit includes a walk through the local countryside and the duration of the walk is usually 3.5 hours. Whilst not a difficult walk, parts of the walk are in full sun and we recommend a hat, sunscreen and of course carrying drinking water. Please discuss any concerns with your leader.

Today, you’ll explore Ranomafana National Park on a four-hour guided walk. Keep your eyes peeled for lemurs, striped civets, mongooses, goshawks, geckos, frogs, and butterflies. You may even spot an incredible net-casting spider or the world's smallest chameleon.

  • Ranomafana National Park - Rainforest walk

Your activities in the National Park include two guided walks. The trail is hilly with many uneven steps. Depending on the weather it can be wet and muddy. Leech socks and trail/hiking shoes are recommended.

After breakfast, head to Valbio Research and Conservation centre, an international research station on the edge of Madagascar's beautiful and abundant Ranomafana National Park. Under the direction of renowned primatologist Patricia C. Wright, the centre works to protect Madagascar’s unique and biologically diverse ecosystems through conservation projects that directly benefit local communities. You’ll get a chance to tour the centre with a researcher and sit down for an informal session to learn about the work they do. After lunch, make the journey to Ambositra, home to the third-largest ethnic group in Madagascar – the Betsileo people. Ambositra is known as the arts, crafts, and wood carving capital of Madagascar. You’ll stop by a workshop and learn more about this local art.

  • Ranomafana - Valbio Research & Conservation Centre
  • Ambositra – Woodcarving workshop visit
  • Ranomafana - Conservation Lecture & Lunch

Your travel time today will be approximately 6.5 hours.

This morning, you'll visit the nearby Sandrandahy association to learn about the process of silk production, which is an important part of Malagasy culture. When a Malagasy is buried, their body is wrapped in a large silk sheet known as a 'lambamena' and, after a few years, the family traditionally returns to the tomb to exchange the sheet for a new one. The association supports over 40 women from neighbouring villages, a holistic approach to community development—economic, environmental, and medical—with traditional silk weaving as its hub. After learning more about this wonderful initiative, we’ll drive to Antsirabe. Located in the Malagasy highlands. This evening, enjoy a group dinner in the gazebo within the grounds of the guest house.

  • Gite (1 night)
  • Ambositra - Village Visit
  • Ambositra - Sandrandahy Village Lunch

Today is a long travel day as we make our way to Andasibe – but once you arrive, you’ll see why this place is worth the drive. Andasibe is the most visited park in Madagascar and famous for the 11 species of lemur that call it home. Aside from lemurs, you'll find endemic birds including the long-eared owl and the rufous-headed ground roller, as well as the smallest living chameleon – brookesia minima – and countless types of reptiles, insects and frogs.

Your travel time today will be approximately 10 - 12 hours, depending on traffeic.

Wake up with excitement as you’ll have the opportunity to discover all the unique wildlife during a guided walk through Andasibe National Park today. Then, you'll take a night walk through the forest at Mitsinjo – a privately-owned neighbouring reserve, where you'll encounter nocturnal species including endemic butterflies and lemurs. This forest was formed in 1999 by residents of the village of Andasibe in east-central Madagascar. Today, the organisation is composed of more than 50 members from the local community who focus on conservation, research and sustainable development initiatives. However, in total, the reserve positively impacts more than 400 households in the Andasibe area.

  • Andasibe National Park - Mitsinjo night walk
  • Andasibe National Park - guided walk - Free

You’ll kiss Andasibe goodbye after breakfast this morning for your final stop in Antananarivo. Once you arrive back in Antananarivo, you’ll take part in a hands-on Madagascan chocolate workshop led by a local chocolate maker. You'll learn about the ingredients used in chocolate-making, the refinement process and some of the secrets as to why malagasy chocolate is so unique and delicious. After preparing your own take-home chocolate creations (yum!), malagasy pastries will be served with a selection of local teas, coffees, and for the most courageous ones – rhum arrangés (flavored rum). This evening, why not enjoy a final dinner with your new travel companions – maybe toast to your Madagascar adventure with a local beer or two.

  • Antananarivo - Madagascan Chocolate Workshop

The Jungle Express

The jungle express on madagascar – an adventurous and incomparable experience.

Almost leisurely, the old diesel locomotive takes its way through the dense, green jungle along with its innumerable wagons. The interior of the wagons looks like a colorful place of locals laden with various goods, families with small children, and tourists wearing tropical hats, suitcases and cameras. Through the open windows and doors blows a light breeze. A welcome change from the oppressive sultriness of the typical tropical climate. Suddenly, everything is immersed in the darkness of a tunnel for a long moment, before a breathtaking panorama of high, rugged mountains opens out before the windows, on whose slopes nestle numerous green rice terraces. On the other side, a waterfall crashes down the rugged cliff under loud thunder. A ride on the jungle express on Madagascar sounds like a real big adventure and that’s it. For in no other place on the island can you experience the unique landscape and special people of Madagascar in such an incomparable way so pure and close up.

At 163 kilometers from the inner highlands to the east coast

The demanding construction of this railway line lasted for ten years between Fianarantsoa, located at an altitude of 1100 meters in the Malagasy highlands, and Manakara on the Indian Ocean coast. Between 1926 and 1936, the French colonialists took on this task and built over a length of 163 kilometers a true masterpiece of 67 bridges and 48 tunnels. The narrow-gauge railway overcomes over 1,000 vertical meters and inclines of up to 35%. In view of such inclinations, it is not surprising that the average speed of the Jungle Express is only 30 km / h. So a complete drive from Fianarantsoa to Manakara usually takes a good 12 to 14 hours. Even travel times of 24 hours are not an uncommon exception.

“Mora mora” – “always calm”

However, this is not only due to the low speed of the train, but especially to the numerous scheduled stops on the track. A total of 17 stations the train travels on its 163-kilometer route. Because for many villages that can not be reached by road, it is an indispensable lifeline that not only transports vital goods but also brings the inhabitants of mountain villages into the city. At the stations, there is often a busy and bustling activity. In addition to passengers getting in and out and loading and unloading goodss, local traders offer cooking bananas, fresh fruit and other delicacies. Also, one or the other conversation is conducted during the stop and can delay the onward journey. From time to time, there are also unplanned disruptions and delays, such as technical problems with the ancient, nostalgic diesel locomotive or wild animals such as zebus on the tracks. Patience is essential here, because what is the Malagasy philosophy of life still the same – “mora, mora”, “always with peace”.

Mountains, gorges, valleys, lakes and jungles

But a surprising stop here and there, is not bad, because adventures are not going according to plan. In addition, there will be more time to admire the impressive and incomparable nature of Madagascar on both sides of the track. Closer than on this railroad tourists will probably only come to the tropical rainforest on a guided tour. But the narrow gauge tracks do not just lead through the middle of the jungle. Again and again, a variety of landscape impressions slowly pull away from the windows. In addition to the high mountains, deep gorges and valleys of the Malagasy Andringitra mountains, the Express also passes by the numerous rice fields of the highlands and the tea plantations near Sahambvy. There is also the lake of the same name, a popular destination of the locals. Other highlights of the nature experience along the route is the mighty Mandriampotsy waterfall, as well as the Faraony river, which ran parallel to the tracks for a long time. The Jungle Express also passes the Ranomafana National Park, which, in addition to its waterfalls, is also known for its diverse flora and fauna. If you would like to take a longer detour to the UNESCO World Heritage listed National Park, take your time, as the jungle express operates every two days between Fianarantsoa and Manakara.

Southern to the Highland Tour

Southern to the Highland

We were travelling in group to Madagascar for a fabulous discovery. A good part of the East began the adventure then over the national road to the South. The organization was impeccable, but above all followed by online assistance at any time from Garcihel who was our contact from the agency, this really stood out. It was our second booking with this agency and this is what prompted us to write and share our experience because since our trip to Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda organized by HT, everything has been perfect; good guide, good car, good organization. Part of the group decided to come back because we did not have the chance to discover the western part which also happens to be the pearl of Madagascar. Thank you to the whole team for a memorable trip. (Thomas Murray)

This was the best 12 days I have ever spent on a safari; as a first-timer in Madagascar. I had the chance to see the most destination, like the Tsingy de bemaraha, the fantastic sunset at the Baobab avenue, and the fossa lemures. This trip requires a bit of fitness from the hikes and walks through the rainforest; plan to have comfortable shoes and some warm too. Do not forget to park some swimsuits if you are a beach person like me. The beach at IFATY are endless, and you can watch the whales too if you take a boat ride

Claude is the reason this trip was amazing. He was knowledgeable yet humble , organized yet relaxed, disciplined yet lid back and went beyond and above to take care of us. He was educated and respectful, spoke English, French and German fluently. Extremely classy and gentlemanly. Was very interested in continuous learning and kept notes and answered all of our questions and did research when he did not know the answer. He was passionate and considerate. I can’t commend him enough

Madagascar Baobabs & Beyond Tour

Madagascar Baobabs & Beyond

We toured with Patrick who was wonderful! Fully informed and super nice. We truly saw as much as we could see in the time we had. Unfortunately the roads are terrible in Madagascar (of no fault to Intrepid) which makes for long periods of travel time. They did their best with crappy roads to show us enough of the country to get a good idea of what it's about. I was a single travelling woman who felt safe and comfortable the whole time with a great group of people. I would absolutely recommend this tour to anyone. Just do research on the country before you go so you know what to expect in terms of comfort.

Bruno was a fantastic guide through a lost corner of the world. Be ready for long days on horrible roads but you get to see the magnificent landscapes, national parks, and lemurs, lots of lemurs through the trip. We traveled by bus, 4X4, boat and included a flight from the capital to the south, all gave us a chance to see Madagascar and it’s wonderful people. Our guide Bruno was probably the best guide I’ve ever traveled with, he was always there to help, answering questions about all topics Madagascar. The food was a bit of a struggle but again the chance to see numerous lemurs was worth it all.
