Glorious Beach Getaway

lets go tours mauritius

With long, stretching beaches, verdant forests, and imposing volcanic peaks, the island of Mauritius was made for romance and adventure. With its relaxing island vibes, plenty of history, culture, and buzzing nightlife, Mauritius offers tourists a wide variety of attractions for a full and authentic holiday experience.

Top 5 Things To Do in Mauritius

While the sparkling ocean and island vibes of Mauritius are alluring, there’s more to this tropical paradise than coconuts and snorkeling. Here are the top 5 attractions worth seeking out when you visit Mauritius:

1. Snorkel at Blue Bay, renowned for its remarkable coral garden, which harbors many species including butterfly fish, pendant coral fish, parrot fish and rainbow wrasse, providing tourists with views to a highly colored and splendid aquatic ballet.

2. Visit the idyllic town of Chamarel, which hosts sights of the Seven Colored Earth, dunes of volcanic earth that naturally take several shades, and the Chamarel Waterfalls.

3. Hike Le Morne Brabant Mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a dark history as a refuge for runaway slaves in the 18th century. An exceptional testimony to the resistance of slavery, this is not a site to be missed!

4. Immerse yourself in history at Eureka, Mauritius’ most iconic colonial mansion which demonstrates the impressive architectural prowess of the early 19th century and whose beauty has truly stood the test of time.

5. Go dolphin spotting at Tamarin Bay or Flic En Fac Beach. You’ll be taken out to the open sea at sunrise, where you can spot the dolphins and enjoy a refreshing swim with the magnificent creatures.

Best Time to Visit Mauritius

Just 20 degrees south of the equator, Mauritius offers tourists tropical sunshine throughout the year. The summer (October - March) is wetter than the winter months but if you’re looking to do some deep-sea fishing and scuba diving, then December - March is the best time to visit.

Mauritius may be a small island, but it’s absolutely packed with amazing things to do. One of the easiest ways to make the most of your trip is to do a tour.

Most Mauritius tours are one day only, so they can fit flexibly into your itinerary. You can go on an adventure one day and relax on the beach the next. Perfect!

Another great thing about doing a tour is that you can see most of the island without needing to hire a car.

Most tours also offer hotel pickups and drop-offs, making it super easy to get out of your resort and explore.

What’s more, you’ll get insider information and recommendations during your trip to Mauritius. Plus, activities and experiences you might not have come across otherwise.

So, which tours should you do? I’ve put together a guide of the most top-rated ones with a mix of adventure, nature, wildlife, culture and leisure to make it easier for you to choose.

All of these tours are small group to keep them as personalised as possible. Some of them have private tour options, but they tend to be a lot more expensive, so they might be better suited to a bigger group!

The best tours and day trips in Mauritius

Without further ado, here are the best ways to tour Mauritius Island.

Mauritius: Wild South West Full-Day Tour

Chamarel seven coloured earth surrounded by trees. It's a must visit location on your Mauritius tours.

  • Length: 8 hours
  • Highlights: Chamarel Waterfall, Seven Coloured Earth, Black River Valley, Grand Bassin

Celebrate the best natural sights, and scenery Mauritius has to offer on a wild landscape tour of the southwest. The great thing about this tour is that you can get picked up and dropped at any hotel on the island.

The itinerary is then a full day of sightseeing, starting at the volcanic crater Trou aux Cerfs with its panoramic views of Mauritius.

Next, you’ll visit the model ship factory in Curepipe and Grand Bassin, a sacred site for Mauritian Hindus – watch out for monkeys!

After a stop at the Black River Gorges National Park, you’ll have lunch and a rum tasting at La Rhumerie Chamarel and then visit what I believe is one of the top highlights of Mauritius – the Seven Coloured Earth.

Similar to Rainbow Mountain in Peru, this area of ground is a naturally occurring phenomenon with multi-coloured earth. It’s an incredible sight!

Make sure you take some time to see the famous cascading Chamarel Waterfall here too.

The last stop is Baie du Cap for a final breathtaking view on your tour.

This tour is small-group. There’s also a private tour version which you can do depending on the size of your group.

Full-Day Cruise to Ile aux Cerfs with BBQ Lunch Included

Ile aux Cerfs with boats and a view of Bambous Mountain behind in Mauritius.

  • Length: 7 hours
  • Highlights: 45-foot catamaran, Ile aux Cerfs, snorkelling, BBQ lunch

Enjoy the island life with a catamaran tour of Ile aux Cerfs.

This tour is perfect for those who want to combine adventure with relaxation as you can be as active or leisurely as you want – all with beautiful surroundings and possible dolphin sightings!

The catamaran cruise starts from Point Jerome on the east coast of Mauritius and sails to a quiet spot near the privately owned island of Ile aux Cerfs.

Here you’re treated to turquoise waters, white sandy beaches and an island with lush green vegetation to explore.

Spend the day swimming or snorkelling amongst the reef fish, sunbathing on the beach and relaxing onboard. You also have free time to enjoy the island independently.

A light breakfast and delicious BBQ lunch are provided, cooked up by chefs on board. Soft and alcoholic drinks are provided too.

Al boats have limited capacity, so it’s advisable to book this tour in advance to save your spot!

Dodo Trail Tour with Lunch

Pamplemousses Botanical Garden Mauritius - a girl wearing an orange dress standing in an avenue of trees.

  • Length: 8 hours
  • Highlights: SSR Botanical Garden, Port Louis

The Dodo Trail Tour starts in Port Louis, the capital city. From there you’ll see the best sights of the city from the harbour to the old citadel and Fort Adelaide.

As you work your way through the tour, you’ll spot important landmarks such as the Sait Louis Cathedral and Parliament. Next, you’ll be invited to look around a traditional market where you’ll see a colourful array of fruits and vegetables – and plenty of busy stalls.

The tour includes a traditional home-cooked Mauritian lunch at a private residence. Afterwards, the final stop is Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden (SSR), otherwise known as Pamplemousses Botanical Garden.

It has an amazing collection of rare tropical plants from around the world and a large colonial house. Head to the ponds to see magnificent giant water lilies and a great photo spot!

Admission tickets to all sights are included in this Mauritius city tour price.

Quick fact: this tour is named after the dodo, a flightless bird which unfortunately went extinct sometime in the 1700s.

Blue Bay: Half-Day Snorkelling Trip with Creole Picnic Lunch

Shallow turquoise waters of Blue Bay Marine Park in Mauritius with boats on the water.

  • Length: 4 hours
  • Highlights: Blue Bay Marine Park, snorkelling, shipwreck, Creole lunch on a private island

Love snorkelling? Take a half day trip to Blue Bay Marine Park , a protected marine reserve on the south east coast. You don’t even have to get in the water to enjoy the marine life as the boat has a glass bottom!

Blue Bay Marine Park is the largest coral reserve in Mauritius. The tour starts at Blue Bay Public Beach in the southeast of Mauritius.

From there you’ll sail into the turquoise lagoon with stops including an old shipwreck which you can see in the water or from the boat.

Next, you’ll head to Ile de Deux Coco, a private island, where a chef will serve up a delicious Creole curry lunch and you can enjoy a selection of soft and alcoholic drinks.

You’ll have some time to enjoy the private island before jumping back on the boat for one last snorkel stop before returning to Blue Bay Public Beach.

Mauritius: Tamarind Falls Highlights 3-Hour Hiking Trip

An aerial view of Tamarind Falls waterfalls surrounded by green hills. This hike is one of the best Mauritius tours.

  • Length: 3 hours
  • Highlights: Tamarind Falls, Rivière Tamarind, swimming

You can get a snapshot of what the wild island interior has to offer on this three-hour hiking trip to Tamarind Falls.

Make sure to bring some swimwear as you’ll have the chance to swim in some natural pools on the way!

This adventure tour starts at the Henrietta Bus Station and follows a trail walking through sugarcane fields to reach the entrance to a canyon.

After 30 minutes of walking through the canyon, you’ll come to the first of many stunning waterfalls. Here’s where you can stop, take a swim and cool off before finishing your hike at Tamarind Falls, the most beautiful waterfall of them all!

The tour includes hotel pickup and drop-off if you need it. You’ll also have a guide with you who will show you some of the animals and plants you’ll see on your hike. Remember your swimwear!

Mauritius: Full-Day Catamaran Cruise to the Northern Isles

Green hill of Gabriel Island in the north of Mauritius. Catamarans on the water in front.

  • Highlights: Three Northern Isles, snorkelling, dolphins, BBQ lunch

What’s an island holiday without a boat trip? This full-day catamaran cruise takes you north to the three Northern Isles with a chance to spot dolphins, whales and other marine life along the way!

The tour starts bright and early with tea and coffee at 8am at Grand Baie Public Beach. From there, you’ll sail over to Flat Island, where you’ll be able to explore or relax in the beautiful scenery before tucking into a BBQ lunch with amazing seafood.

After lunch, the next stop is Gabriel Island, where you’ll be able to sunbathe on its famous sandbar or go snorkelling in the crystal clear lagoon.

On your return journey, you’ll stop at Coin de Mare marine reserve and go on another snorkel before heading back.

Black River: Dolphin Swim and Whale Watching by Speedboat

A spinner dolphin leaping out of the water with Mauritius behind.

  • Length: 6 hours
  • Highlights: Swimming with dolphins, whale watching

Tick swimming with dolphins off your bucket list in an ethical way on one of the best Mauritius wildlife tours!

This excursion takes you on a speedboat to the Black River coast of Mauritius, where you’ll have the chance to see spinner and bottlenose dolphins as well as whales (don’t worry, you won’t be swimming with those).

You’ll be able to go snorkelling at some amazing coral reefs too!

The great thing about this tour is it’s a small group which means there will be no more than 8 people and 2 skippers. You’ll also get a briefing about how to respect and keep a safe distance from the dolphins you swim with.

On the second half of the tour, you’ll go whale watching and you have a 60% chance of seeing one.

Look out for resident sperm whales all year round and magnificent humpback whales from June to October!

Snorkelling gear per person and soft drinks are included in the price.

Mauritius: Le Morne Mountain UNESCO Eco Hike

View of the rocky and steap Le Morne mountain with a beach and sea below.

  • Length: 4 hours
  • Highlights: Scramble hike, panoramic views, learn about history and conservation

See Mauritius from on high by climbing Le Morne Mountain on this Eco Hike up a UNESCO World Heritage site!

One of the best eco tours in Mauritius, this thrilling adventure takes you 465 metres above sea level, where you’ll admire breathtaking lagoon views and learn about the island’s history.

Start the hike with a 4×4 car journey through private lands where you might spot wildlife such as deer, wild pigs and birds.

You’ll then begin on foot at the North-Western base of the mountain, which will warm you up for the next challenging phase.

At 340 metres above sea level, you’ll reach the first of the four scrambling/climbing sections. Don’t worry; you’ll get a safety briefing, and each stop offers panoramic views and photo opportunities.

Once you reach the summit, you’ll be rewarded for your efforts with breathtaking views, and you’ll be able to take a well-earned break before you descend.

Heads up, this is a challenging hike with some scrambling and climbing bits so you’ll need a good level of fitness and stamina.

Make sure you’re wearing good footwear too. It might not be suitable for those who have a fear of heights!

Port Louis: Street Food Tour

View from above of colourful skyscrapers and buildings of Port Louis, Mauritius.

  • Length: 3 hours
  • Highlights: Delicious street food, local guide

One of the best ways to immerse yourself in a culture is through food which is why I highly recommend this Port Louis Street Food Tour.

This half day tour will allow you to experience Mauritian culinary delights like a local. Your guide will take you through bustling streets to some of the best authentic food stops in the capital that a tourist is unlikely to come across.

Enjoy traditional feasts such as Indo-Mauritian “faratas” (fried dough bread) served with Creole “rougaille, Mauritian dumplings and Franco-Mauritian pastries.

There are eight tastings in total and each one highlights the diversity of Mauritian heritage and culture with its French, Creole, African, Indian and Chinese influences. Look out for the oldest patisserie in Port Louis too!

All food tastings and a bottle of water are included in the price.

Ile aux Aigrettes – Tea Route – Gris Gris Guided Day Tour

Mauritius tours aren't complete without a trip to Ile aux Aigrettes. Pictured, a giant tortoise surrounded by vegetation.

  • Highlights: Nature reserve, giant tortoises, tea factory and museum, lunch at Saint Aubin Colonial house

If you’re a nature lover, Ile aux Aigrettes is an absolute must-visit during your trip to Mauritius. Here, you’ll discover a wild island and protected nature reserve home to rare plants and animals, including the Giant Tortoise.

This full-day Mauritius tour takes you to Ile aux Aigrettes, where you can learn about the ongoing conservation projects on the island and hang out with the giant tortoises that roam free.

You can also find rare birds such as the Pink Pigeon and Mauritius Fody, so it’s a great choice for bird watchers!

Next, you’ll see another side to Mauritian heritage and culture: tea. A Bois Cheri Tea Factory, you’’ learn about the history and production of tea before winding your way through picturesque plantations to a tea-tasting chalet.

Enjoy a selection of teas, admire the views and try a few rum samples in the on-site shop before you leave.

The tour includes a local lunch at Saint Aubin Colonial House, that’s located in a beautiful garden. Finish off with a stop at Gris Gris Beach for dramatic cliff views.

The price of the tour includes hotel pickup, lunch, drinks and Ile aux Aigrettes and Bois Cheri entrance fees.

Pure Breaks Flexible Multi Day Tours

View from Sublime Point looking out towards mountains in the distance and the coastline. Pure Breaks an help you build the best Mauritius tours.

  • Length: From 7 days
  • Highlights: Fully flexible to you

They can help you build a tour featuring all the must-dos and best places to stay on the island. You can either drive it yourself or arrange a private transfer. Tours typically start from seven days.

Heads up, Pure Breaks tends to be slightly on the luxury end but prices are relatively reasonable depending on what you normally budget for.

Don’t forget travel insurance!

At the risk of sounding like a parent, it’s always a good idea to have travel insurance on the off chance something goes wrong when you visit Mauritius.

I currently use Holiday Extras because it has great plans – including electronics cover – at an affordable price point. I’ve recently used them for Mauritius and Jordan and got cheap cover for both!

Final Thoughts: The best Mauritius tours

Chamarel Waterfall in Mauritius surrounded by trees.

Mauritius has plenty of tours, excursions and day trips to suit a range of interests. Whether you would like to spend the day relaxing on a 45-ft catamaran, scrambling up a mountain or sampling the culinary delights of Port Louis, there’s something here for everyone.

I recommend booking in advance to save your spot as they do tend to get sold out fast.

This is one of the most touristy towns and beaches on the west coast of the island . Flic en Flac is an unmissable spot during your trip to Mauritius.

This coastal town boasts an impressive number of luxury hotels , as well as restaurants, clubs, and bars facing the public beach.

The Flic en Flac beach is very long , stretching over several kilometers. Turquoise sea and white sand are, of course, part of the experience, with a broad tree-covered area where you can set up in the shade.

Mauritian families often gather here over the weekend, so if you want to avoid the crowd, opt to visit during the week.

At the beginning of the beach, several food trucks and vendors offer snacks , fruits, and drinks to enjoy – which is a delightful experience when seated facing the ocean, either before or after an afternoon swim.

When the sea is calm, the water is transparent, and with a snorkel and mask, you can see lots of colorful fish .

Several diving centers also offer day sessions for scuba diving (the package includes a training phase in a pool, then an excursion in open sea with an instructor).

You can also try out several water activities and take a boat tour in the lagoon .

If you enjoy evening fun, you’ll find various restaurants and nightclubs across from the beach.

Flic en Flac Beach

Le Pouce (Le Pouce in French, litteraly “the thumb”) is the third highest mountain in Mauritius (reaching 812 meters). Its peak resembles a raised thumb , which is how it got its name.

Visible from Port Louis, you can access it from the town of Saint Pierre .

You can drive straight to the foot of the mountain , (there’s parking right before the trailhead) and start the climb on your own. Otherwise , the climb to Pouce is organized from the Les Allées d’Helvetia shopping center in Saint-Pierre.

You can reach it by bus. From there, a guide takes you to Le Pouce and guides you to the top (you need to reserve in advance at your hotel or with a travel agency).

The climb is pretty easy, accessible to all, and will take half a day to go up and down, with pauses to take in the view.

After about 1 to 1.5 hours of walking in the tropical forest, you’ll arrive at a very broad meadow, dominated by Le Pouce’s peak .

It’s ideal to picnic here, with a wonderful view of the surroundings.

The ascent to the peak will take an additional 15 minutes and it’s here that the most challenging part of the adventure starts: it’s very steep, and you’ll really need to clamber over rocks to reach the top.

Be careful as some areas are quite dangerous. I wouldn’t recommend children under 14 or those with a fear of heights to attempt this final part.

The peak often gets quite windy and you need to stay focused. From the summit, you’ll get to enjoy an exceptional panorama of Mauritius and the surrounding small islands.

It’s truly a wonderful hike to undertake during your trip to Mauritius !

Mount Le Pouce

Do you dream of white sandy beaches, azure blue skies, and crystal-clear waters ?

Well, you’ll find your slice of paradise on the Ile aux Cerfs as the locals call it, wich means Deer Island. Situated on the East coast, within the lagoon of Trou d’Eau Douce , this idyllic island is one of the country’s most beautiful tourist sites, and a crowd-pleaser for visitors.

To get to Ile aux Cerfs, it’s a boat ride, no two ways about it . From Trou d’Eau Douce beach, taxi boats shuttle back and forth to the island every 20 to 30 minutes.

Once you reach Ile aux Cerfs, you’ll easily spend half a day . Let me tell you straight away, if you were picturing a deserted island, you’ve got the wrong idea. The island is heavily touristy and really caters to fun and water activities.

You can bask on the stunning white sand beaches , go kayaking, sailing, parasailing, and even play some golf.

Restaurants and bars on the island make it possible to have lunch or dinner right there. I personally tried the Marsala restaurant, specializing in Indian cuisine, and boy, was it a treat!

You can also opt for a longer excursion departing from, say, Pointe Jérôme or Trou d’Eau Douce by catamaran. The boat trip amidst the transparent sea and surrounding tiny islands is nothing short of magical!

To book your excursion, it’s as easy as clicking the following buttons:

  • Full-day cruise with a barbecue leaving from Pointe Jérôme:
  • Cruise to Ile aux Cerfs from Trou d’Eau Douce:

In my opinion, Cap Malheureux beach is one of the most beautiful spots in Mauritius . Easily recognizable by its bold red church set against the azure blue sky and sea, it’s truly a piece of heaven.

When you’re visiting the north of Mauritius , stop here and spend half a day. Enjoy the picturesque beach, take a leisurely stroll around, and go for a swim.

I’d also recommend spicing up your day with a trip to Ile Plate , the little island just across from Cap Malheureux beach. You can go diving and snorkeling to get up close with the fish and shellfish.

And guess what? Lunch in the form of a barbecue is even included in the price!

The catamaran trip also includes a swim near Gabriel Island and Coin de Mire , renowned for its stunning array of fish.

Book your spot by clicking right here:

Grand Baie is a tourist town in the northwest of the island , once a fishing village and now a seaside resort .

Here, too, you’ll find a significant concentration of luxury hotels and magnificent villas . The residents of Grand Baie are among the wealthiest in Mauritius, and many expatriates live here.

Things to do in and around Grand Baie:

  • Lounge on the beach and admire the breathtaking view
  • Sample local delicacies from the vendors
  • Go shopping on Sunset Boulevard
  • Dive in the bay and try out the water sports
  • Enjoy a wild night at a discotheque (the ‘Banané Café’ is the largest on the island)
  • Discover Pereybere beach just a few kilometers away
  • Visit La Croisette Shopping Mall (free shuttles from Sunset Boulevard)

During your stay in Mauritius , you’ll mostly get to discover beautiful beaches, but there’s more to it.

Devote a day to exploring Port Louis, the capital . Far from tourist hotspots, here you’ll discover the real local life.

Stroll through the streets to discover Mauritian history and culture .

Things to see in Port Louis:

1) The Caudan Waterfront : the island’s oldest shopping center , opened in 1996, the Caudan Waterfront has charm to spare and you could easily spend an entire afternoon here.

Built right by the ocean, it houses all sorts of shops, a variety of restaurants and snack bars , a cinema, and even a casino.

The famous umbrella-lined alley is filled with small vendors of fresh fruit juice and cassava-based snacks , but also artists and street vendors . The atmosphere is quite pleasant and on weekend evenings, there are often shows and concerts in the central square .

Patrick and Rosie Latulipe’s food cart can be found every day in the Umbrella Alley of the Caudan and what they whip up is simply delicious. Everything is made from cassava.

Here you can taste cassava faratas (or rotis) stuffed with vegetables , pancakes, cassava pudding (my favorite), and other savory and sweet snacks. It’s something you don’t get to eat often elsewhere, so give it a try!

2) This is where you’ll find the Craft Market , the kingdom of Mauritian crafts, teeming with all sorts of items, clothes, and typically Mauritian products .

3) You’ll also have the opportunity to visit the Blue Penny Museum , the island’s most renowned museum that chronicles the history of Mauritius.

4) Place d’Armes : This square is located across from the harbor , nestled in the banking district.

At its heart stands the statue of Bertrand-François Mahé de La Bourdonnais , the French governor who founded the city in 1735.

On the esplanade, you’ll have the chance to admire the royal palm trees and several cannons testifying to the city’s colonial heritage . The Governor’s Palace stands to the north of the square.

5) The Central Market : This is the liveliest spot in Port Louis .

It’s just a short stroll from Place d’Armes, just follow the crowd.

Here, you’ll find a plethora of fruit and vegetable stalls , with enthusiastic vendors doing their utmost to attract buyers. You can also taste some local delicacies on the go: dhall purri, gateaux piments, rotis… There are also clothes, souvenir sellers, and local crafts .

To discover the culinary specialties of Mauritius, I recommend you book a guided street food tour in Port Louis.

Lasting 3 hours , it allows you to visit the market and of course taste local cuisine . You’ll find all the details about this outing by clicking here:

6) The Aapravasi Ghat museum : it’s been UNESCO World Heritage-listed since 2006.

It used to be an immigration depot that welcomed immigrant workers from India between 1849 and 1923. Nowadays, it’s an open-air museum . You’ll find it on the quays opposite the Port Louis bus station.

Here, you’ll uncover the remnants of this former living place: kitchens, common rooms, hospital …

7) La Citadelle Port-Louis, or Fort Adelaide : This fortress was built by the English settlers in 1834.

Overlooking the city, it served as a rampart and means of defense (namely the French colonizers). You can still see several cannons that stand as a reminder of that era.

La Citadelle stands over 100 meters high, offering a panoramic view of the entire Port Louis and the surrounding mountains. The site was recently renovated specifically for tourists, complete with several souvenir shops.

To visit Port Louis , you can also opt for a full-day organized excursion . The outing includes pick-up from your hotel and transportation.

You’ll have the opportunity to tour the city as well as the Pamplemousses Botanic Garden and Cap Malheureux , 2 places you must see in Mauritius that are mentionned in this article.

To book your Port Louis tour , you just need to click here:

If you’re driving to Port Louis, park at the Caudan parking , as finding a parking space in the city is extremely difficult (plus parking is free from 4 pm and on weekends).

Located in the southwest of the country, near Le Morne Brabant , you’ll find the stunning plain of Chamarel where one of Mauritius’s principal natural curiosities resides: the seven Coloured Earths . As you might guess, it’s an absolute must-visit!

Situated on private property (thus entry fees apply), the seven Coloured Earths is a vast clearing made up of soil dunes , whose color variations create a beautiful gradient.

You can visit the site in half a day. To avoid queuing at the entrance, you can buy your tickets in advance by clicking this link .

Next, you’ll follow a trail that leads to a vantage point overlooking the Chamarel waterfall , which stands approximately 100 meters tall. You can even descend and take a dip if you’re feeling adventurous.

Continue along your path, and you’ll reach the seven Coloured Earths, offering you a truly incredible and unique spectacle .

Chamarel and the seven Coloured Earths

When it comes to paradisiacal beaches, Belle Mare beach is top-notch . It will leave you speechless with its postcard-perfect scenery.

Located on the east coast of the country , this beach is unquestionably one of the most beautiful on the island . It stretches approximately 10 km, lined with several upscale hotels.

Fortunately, a large part of the beach remains “free”, offering all visitors pristine white sands and crystal-clear blue waters . The beach is also fringed by palm trees, filaos , and well-preserved natural surroundings.

You can spend a half-day or even a full day at Belle Mare beach to :

  • Catch some rays (hats and sunscreen are a must!)
  • Picnic with friends , with your significant other or family
  • Dive into the turquoise lagoon waters
  • Enjoy the offered water activities like paddle boats, windsurfing, parasailing, kayaking, motorboat or catamaran excursions…

A lively oasis to the east of Mauritius, Bras d’Eau National Park owes its name to the broad, arm-like waterway that flows through it.

Encompassing nearly 500 hectares, the park is primarily a forested wonderland . You could easily lose a whole day exploring its well-maintained trails without missing the unspoiled wilderness that defines its charm.

Get there early in the morning, stay quiet, and you just might get to see local wildlife – like the Grey White Eye, the Wood Pigeon, the Kestrel, or even monkeys, bats, and boars that call this place home.

As for flora, the park is home to white eucalyptus and mahogany trees , some towering over 40 meters high .

Peaceful and refreshing , the park is a perfect retreat for those seeking a quiet time away from the bustle of beaches and cities.

As you amble along the bird-song-filled paths, you’ll stumble across some ruins , including those of an old sugar factory and a lime kiln, and ponds perfect for a break (like the Mare Mahogany and the Mare aux Chevrettes).

To reach the park, you’ll pass through the villages of Rivière du Rempart and Roches Noires .

There’s ample parking at the entrance, and a few kiosks offer refreshments before you start your adventure.

If you’re traveling by bus, drop off at Flacq station and catch a taxi to the Bras d’Eau Park.

Bras d'Eau National Park

Tucked away in the north of the island , just 10 kilometers from Grand Baie, is the heavenly Trou aux Biches beach. It litteraly means “hole of deers” in French. Don’t ask me why.

As with other beaches on the island, here you’ll meet white sand, palm trees, and the turquoise waters of the lagoon . Your agenda will likely be filled with:

  • Water sports : Nearby hotels offer activities like sailing, water skiing, parasailing, tennis, and golf…

Trou aux Biches beach

The Tea Route is a culinary and cultural journey . It’ll take you on a tour of colonial and traditional Mauritius through the steps involved in making Mauritian tea.

The visit is in three stages , with a guide transporting you from one location to another.

  • 1st stop: Domaine des Aubineaux. Here you’ll tour one of the island’s last colonial houses (dating back to 1872), explore the old stables, the tea room, the essential oil distillery, and the gardens.
  • 2nd stop: Bois Chéri . This is where the tea is grown and harvested . The visit includes a tour of the tea factory to learn about the production process, a visit to the tea museum , and finally, a tea tasting at the chalet with a panoramic view of the entire estate and the southern region of the island.
  • 3rd stop: Le Saint Aubin. A visit to the colonial house (built in 1819) turned restaurant for a typically Mauritian meal . Visit of the sugar mill and rum distillery . And a visit to the “ Maison de la vanille ” where Mauritian vanilla – a typical addition to local tea – is produced.

The entire Tea Route can be done in a full day . Pick-up from your hotel , transportation , guide , all entrance fees , and lunch are included.

You can book this activity right now by clicking the following green button:

Of course, if you’d rather not use a guide and visit these places independently, you’re absolutely free to do so over a couple of days.

Also referred to as “Ganga Talao”, Grand Bassin is arguably the most sacred place on Mauritius Island .

As a pilgrimage site for the island’s Hindus during the annual Maha Shivaratree festival, the Grand Bassin area is comprised of a natural lake (formed by an old water-filled crater) surrounded by numerous Hindu temples welcoming both pilgrims and visitors.

The top highlight of this place is undoubtedly the two colossal statues of Lord Shiva and the goddess Durga . In fact, the latter stands tall as the largest statue of a female deity in the world . Both statues tower over 30 meters high, which is seriously jaw-dropping!

Visiting Grand Bassin is a Mauritius must-do , and visitors usually love it.

You’ll get to tour the temples (and even have a “tika” painted on your forehead if you wish) and walk around the lake , exploring the lush nature and other religious statues.

Also, Grand Bassin is essentially a monkey kingdom , they’re all over the place, often playfully pestering tourists for snacks.

Half a day is more than enough to explore Grand Bassin, and even better, entry is free !

To learn more about the site and Hindu culture, you should visit this part of the island with a guide .

A full-day excursion not only includes exploring Grand Bassin , but also a visit to the seven Coloured Earths, Trou-aux-Cerfs , and even Black River Gorges National Park .

You can book in advance using the button below:

Grand Bassin, Mauritius

This former colonial residence is located in the center of the island, near the Moka River. Built in 1830, it was once home to British and French aristocrats from the 19th century.

Now a museum since 1986, it offers a peek into the colonial lifestyle of that era . It’s one of the largest houses on the island. The displayed furniture is original, and the rooms have been restored, primarily featuring wood. L

The estate also boasts large grounds with numerous local plants and fruit trees , along with a lovely English garden. You can also visit a museum showcasing a rich collection of period artifacts.

Outside, you can wander along the river banks , from where several kilometers of trails lead you to hike in dense vegetation . You’ll discover waterfalls and many endemic tropical plants . It’s a peaceful, enjoyable stroll, perfect for winding down your day.

The site also includes a restaurant and a souvenir shop.

Admission is 10 euros for adults and 6 euros for children.

Maison Eureka

If you’re passing through the country’s center, why not swing by the largest shopping center on the island: Bagatelle Mall of Mauritius .

It’s a modern shopping mall , and spending an hour or two there is quite enjoyable, especially if you want to dine at the “food court” outdoors, offering many options: Mauritian, Indian, Asian cuisine, pizzas, burgers…

The mall hosts numerous various shops, three supermarkets, and a cinema .

While not a destination per se as you’ll find similar malls worldwide, it’s a nice spot for a bite or a movie in the evening. Bagatelle borders the highway and is easily accessible by bus.

Embarking on an excursion to La Vallée de Ferney is a must-do activity during your stay in Mauritius .

This nature reserve spanning over 200 hectares is located in the southeast of the island and is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna . The reserve consists of forests and rolling meadows . Everything’s incredibly green, and the landscapes are genuinely breathtaking.

To get there, you’ll need to catch a bus to Mahébourg , followed by a taxi ride to the old Ferney sugar mill, between Mahébourg and Vieux Grand Port townships. This is where your tour starts, and you can choose to do it with or without a guide .

Before hopping on a shuttle to the hiking trailhead, take a quick look at the tiny coffee museum near the reception and the property’s gardens where you can even picnic.

After a 3 km ride through sugarcane fields by bus or pick-up (watch out for the bumps!), you’ll arrive at the reserve. You can choose to walk or explore in a 4×4 vehicle .

If you opt for the walk, a 3-kilometer trail leads you through dense tropical forest offering panoramic views over Mahébourg Bay and the small islands off the coast at several spots.

Keep your eyes wide open and occasionally gaze skywards. During your walk, you may spot some of Mauritius’ endemic bird species such as the Mauritius Kestrel or the Pink Pigeon.

As for the 4×4 tour, it lasts 1h30 , providing you with an opportunity to delve deeper into the valley along a ten-kilometer-long track.

Note: don’t venture into La Vallée de Ferney without insect repellent lotion unless you fancy a terrible time. Sunscreen and walking shoes are also essential.

Check out the official website for pricing details.

Vallée de Ferney

While you’re in the southwest of the island , you can’t miss out on the Black River Gorges National Park , Mauritius’s largest natural park (that’s a whopping 6,754 hectares!).

Nature enthusiasts and hiking aficionados will be in their element here. Plan to spend at least half a day hiking and picnicking right there .

The Black River Gorges National Park has some outstanding hikes that let you delve into the heart of the native forest , discover hidden waterfalls, rivers, and enjoy stunning views of the landscape below .

This forest is special as it hosts over 300 species of endemic plants and 9 species of birds that are unique to Mauritius.

Make sure to wear your best hiking shoes because the trails can get quite steep at times. Don’t forget your mosquito repellent cream either.

For a guided tour, allocate half a day, complete with a swim at the end of the tour . Make sure to book in advance by clicking on the following button:

Avoid visiting during the rainy season (December to March) as the site is very damp and the paths especially slippery.

Black River Gorges National Park

Close to Tamarin in the west, the 7 Waterfalls hike is an excursion I highly recommend doing during your trip to Mauritius.

You can choose between two main trails: one covering the first 4 waterfalls, and the other covering all 7 waterfalls .

You can hike freely, or with a guide .

The guided tour will take half a day for the first trail and a full day for the entire trail , with breaks, lunch, and swims included.

You can book it by clicking on the green button below:

If you want to be independent and don’t plan on taking long breaks, you can complete the full hike in about 4 hours .

The 7 Waterfalls Trail

Le Morne Brabant is a mountain in the southwest of the island , a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2008, surrounded by beaches that are each more beautiful than the last.

Most are private beaches owned by hotels, but you’ll have access to the public beach at Le Morne Brabant , lined with palm trees, which is one of the most beautiful and tranquil (except on Sundays!) in Mauritius. Wilder than the heavily touristy beaches of the north and west parts of the island, it’s a call to peace and relaxation.

During your journey through the southwest, you definitely should relax on this gorgeous beach located right at the foot of the mountain. You can easily get there by bus , or by walking if you choose to tour Le Morne Brabant on foot , which is also a fun thing to do.

If you’re driving, after leaving the beach, continue on the main coastal road (voted one of the most beautiful roads in the world, you’ll see why), and stop at Macondé rock , a huge rock jutting out into the sea.

Stairs allow you to climb it and discover at the top a stunning panoramic view of the surroundings . In clear weather and in the dark, it’s said that you can even spot the lights of Réunion Island in the distance.

A street vendor is often stationed right across from the rock , offering an exceptionally good fruit salad for just 25 rupees (about 50 cents). It’s honestly delicious and refreshing.

The beach at Morne Brabant

The hike to the top of Morne Brabant Mountain is one of the most beautiful excursions you can take in Mauritius. Plan for about 3 hours round-trip .

The ascent offers stunning views of the whole southern part of the island. The landscapes and colors are truly breathtaking from up there.

The first part of the walk is easy and accessible to everyone . It gets challenging after that. The ascent to the summit is extremely steep and hazardous , making it unsuitable for children.

Let’s be honest: it’s downright perilous, so you shouldn’t be afraid of heights and you should be used to physical exertion .

If you’d feel more at ease, you can also choose to climb with a professional guide . To book this option, just click the button below:

At the top, you’ll have an incredible panoramic view of the island and the ocean.

You’ll also see at the top a large stone cross . The history of Morne Brabant Mountain is both powerful and tragic, tied to the period of slavery.

Many slaves committed suicide by throwing themselves from the top of this mountain, and this cross was erected as a tribute to their memory.

Le Morne Brabant Mountain

During your visit to Mauritius , I strongly suggest paying a visit to the exquisite Pamplemousses Botanic Garden located in the northwestern district, which shares its name, “Pamplemousse” which means grapefruit in French.

You can easily get there by bus, especially from Port Louis in just 15-20 minutes , and the bus stops right next to the entrance.

Established in the 18th century by the French governor and botanist Pierre Poivre, the garden spans 37 hectares and hosts hundreds of plant species from all around the world .

You’ll find a vast collection of plants of all sorts, palm trees of all shapes and sizes, flowering plants, fruit trees, all set in a gorgeous setting with large green spaces and landscaped trails .

This is the place to be if you want to witness the awe-inspiring giant water lilies that Pamplemousses is known for . And let’s not forget about the impressive baobab specimens that add to the charm of this place.

During your visit, you’ll also encounter various animals including numerous bats resting in the trees, chameleons, colorful birds and even mongooses . There’s also a part of the park housing captive animals: giant tortoises and deer.

Although a guided tour isn’t mandatory, it offers much more insight than a self-guided tour. The guides will tell you all about the plants’ characteristics, let you smell their aromas, and explain the history of the place.

I’ll be honest with you, the garden’s guides can be quite talkative, so get ready to really pay attention if you want to soak up all the information they have to offer.

The garden is open from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm and a visit takes 1 to 2 hours .

Admission fee: 8 euros per adult, 5 euros per child.

To visit the north of Mauritius and the botanical garden , you can also opt for a private full-day tour .

Your driver guide will pick you up directly from your hotel and will take you to the Pamplemousses Garden , Port Louis, and even to the beach. You can book below:

Pamplemousses garden Mauritius

Geschichte in Mauritius‘ Hauptstadt Port Louis

If you didn’t know already, it’s important to note right away that in Mauritius, they drive on the left !

Yes, it’s a national rule inherited from past British colonization.

But don’t worry, the transition is usually easy , and lots of tourists use cars to visit Mauritius without any trouble. So why not you?

However, if you really don’t feel like driving on the left, you can always choose the “driver” option and be taken wherever you wish across the island . It’s pricier but it’s the ideal solution for exploring Mauritius by car without any stress .

To book your chauffeur service in Mauritius that will take you around at your convenience, you just need to click on the button below:

Road trip means one thing for sure… a car !

Since you can’t bring your own vehicle to Mauritius, you’ll certainly need to rent one locally .

You will find several car rental agencies at the airport , and a few in tourist towns.

However, I strongly advise against using small private rental services to avoid scams and questionable insurance conditions .

My recommendation for renting a car in Mauritius is to go through Booking Cars .

There is no better option on the island in terms of pricing , safety , and quality of service .

With Booking Cars you can be sure of:

  • easily comparing prices for all car rental offers in Mauritius
  • having a comprehensive insurance protection against theft and accidents
  • getting a quick refund in case of any issues
  • being able to modify or cancel your booking for free .

Plus, if you find a cheaper deal elsewhere, they will refund the difference ! That says a lot about them having truly the best prices.

For your road trip in Mauritius , don’t hesitate to compare car rental offers now and to book your vehicle without delay to get the best rates . To do so, simply click on the button below:

If you’re wondering when to go to Mauritius , here’s some advice.

Mauritius is a destination that can be visited all year round. However, there is a less favorable period for road trips: the rainy and cyclone season , which is between January and March.

Even though the weather can be extremely beautiful during these months, rainfall is heavier and the risk of storms or cyclones is significant. January to March is also the peak of summer, so it’s a particularly hot and humid season.

In my opinion, the best time to go on holiday to Mauritius is between May and October .

It’s the driest season, it’s warm but not stifling like in the middle of summer, and the conditions are ideal for hiking, swimming, and fully enjoying your trip.

If you plan your road trip in Mauritius for July-August or later in the year ( October to December ), make sure to book your activities and accommodations in advance , as well as your rental car! Because it’s the high tourist season and things get booked up fast.

It’s quite difficult to give you an exact price range for a road trip in Mauritius.

Why? Because besides the price of the airplane ticket, the budget for visiting Mauritius by car can vary greatly depending on:

  • the time of year you travel
  • the duration of your stay
  • the category of hotels you choose
  • the activities you plan to do.

It’s also important to know that the sooner you book your accommodations and activities , the less expensive they will be.

The same goes for the plane ticket and the rental car : it’s best to book as early as possible to benefit from advantageous rates .

Therefore, I strongly recommend that you start planning as soon as possible to define your itinerary and make your reservations. By doing so, you’ll make real savings !

To easily estimate your total budget (excluding plane tickets), you can use the links I provide in this article and in the “Itineraries” articles, which give you rates for:

  • the rental of your car
  • the hotel reservations
  • the activities to do.

Are you lucky enough to be spending 10 days in Mauritius ?

Don’t feel like staying on the same beach the whole time and would rather explore the island by car ?

Great idea! Mauritius is brimming with wonders, and it would be a shame to stay in one place for the entire duration.

For your road-trip of 9, 10, or 11 days in Mauritius , I have prepared a detailed itinerary in 7 steps that will allow you to thoroughly explore the island, from north to south and from east to west!

Here is an overview of the program I suggest:

Step 1 – The North of Mauritius (4 days)

On the first day, take a tour of the stunning Northern beaches ( Grand Baie, Trou aux Biches, Cap Malheureux …) and take the time to swim and try water activities. Have a seaside dinner in Grand Baie.

The next day, embark on a superb catamaran for a full-day cruise in the lagoon, up to the 3 islets of the North. An activity you can book here!

Then, plan a day to visit the capital Port Louis to see:

  • the monuments of the downtown area (Governor’s Palace, Place d’Armes, the oldest theater in the Indian Ocean…)
  • the grand covered market
  • the Caudan Waterfront.

I also suggest you take the Port Louis food tour to enjoy Mauritian culinary specialties while learning a lot about the history of the city.

The next day, visit the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden and then the “L’Aventure du Sucre” Museum .

Grand Baie Mauritius

Step 2 – The Western Region of Mauritius (4 days)

Head to the west of the island to spend time on the stunning beach of Flic-en-Flac , before heading to the largest nature reserve in Mauritius: the Black River Gorges National Park , just a few kilometers away.

Black River Gorges National Park

The next day, head southwest to climb to the top of Morne Brabant on a 4-hour guided hike ( breathtaking views at the top! )

You can then rest on the paradisiacal beach of Le Morne , which is right at the foot of the mountain.

On the 7th day of your holiday, set out to discover the charming village of Chamarel , which houses many must-see sights:

  • the rum distillery
  • The Seven Coloured Earths (a natural wonder you must see during your road trip in Mauritius)
  • the island’s tallest waterfall
  • the Ebony Forest Reserve
  • the optical illusions museum (“ Curious Corner “).

The following day, I suggest visiting the sacred site of Ganga Talao (also known as Grand Bassin ), with its colossal statues of Hindu gods, temples, and a lake nestled in an ancient crater.

You can then make a stop at the Alexandra Falls lookout to admire the beautiful waterfall and the superb view of the bay.

Finish the day with a stroll through the Plaine Sophie Botanical Reserve and/or by visiting the Bois Chéri estate where the famous Mauritian tea is produced.

Grand Bassin in Mauritius

Day 3 – East and Southeast Coast of the Island (2 days)

For the penultimate day of your Mauritius road trip, head to the East coast to discover the iconic Bellemare Beach . Get ready for relaxation, swimming, snorkeling, and a variety of water sports!

Then, take a boat trip to Île aux Cerfs and spend a few paradise-like hours on this small island surrounded by turquoise waters.

To get there, you can choose between taking a shuttle that goes back and forth several times a day from Trou d’Eau Douce, or opt for a day cruise with lunch on board .

I provide you with all the details about the most beautiful spots to see on the East coast of Mauritius in my guide devoted to this region, which you can read right here: What to do in Bellemare?

Complete your 10-day tour of Mauritius with the beautiful Southeast region, represented by the villages of Mahébourg and Blue Bay . On the agenda for this last day:

  • Visit Mahébourg

  • Blue Bay Beach and, if you have time, a half-day glass bottom boat tour in the lagoon

A 3-week Road Trip in Mauritius

By spending 3 weeks in Mauritius , you’ll have plenty of time to discover all the must-visit spots on the island, as well as venture off the beaten path !

To help you plan it all, I’ve prepared a 20-21 day road trip circuit in Mauritius which you can find in this article: A 3-week itinerary in Mauritius

If you don’t feel like reading it in detail right now, here’s a summary:

Start your Mauritius trip in the Southeast region, specifically in Mahébourg (conveniently close to the airport!).

Stroll along the seafront and quickly visit the town before discovering the first beach of your stay: the stunning Pointe d’Esny Beach !

End the day at another picturesque beach in the area: Blue Bay Beach , just a 5-minute drive away.

Stay overnight in Mahébourg.

The next day, head to Ferney Valley , a nature reserve just 10 minutes from Mahébourg, for an immerse expérience in the lush nature of Mauritius.

If you have the time, make a quick visit to Blue Waterfall before returning to your hotel.

For day 3, I suggest a 3-hour quad biking tour with a guide to explore the wild Southeast and its natural wonders!

Pointe d'Esny Beach

Head north for the continuation of your 3-week Mauritius road trip, heading towards Bellemare, the emblem of the East coast.

Spend some time on the Bellemare beach with its picture-perfect scenery, and take the opportunity to relax and/or try out some of the offered water activities (diving, water skiing, towed tubing…).

Head to Trou d’Eau Douce in the early afternoon to catch the shuttle that takes you to Ile aux Cerfs , a little piece of paradise just 15 minutes by boat away.

Another option for the day: a full-day catamaran cruise in the Bellemare lagoon, which includes lunch on board and two stops at the Grande Rivière Sud-Est waterfall and Ile aux Cerfs!

Overnight in Bellemare.

The next day, a pleasant and easy hike awaits you in the forest of the Bras D’Eau National Park .

Bellemare beach Mauritius

First, make your way to Flic-en-Flac , a coastal village known for its wide white-sand beach, one of the most beautiful and popular on the island. Take your time to enjoy the beach on the first day. And why not try scuba diving that day?

The next day, leave the sea behind and venture into the tropical forest of Mauritius’ largest nature reserve: the Black River Gorges National Park .

You’ll have a choice of several hiking trails, but the best way to see the most beautiful spots without getting lost is to opt for a guided hike !

For the 8th day of your Mauritius island tour, I suggest another key hike in this area: the 7 Cascades trail (also known as the Tamarin Falls ). It’s one of the most extraordinary nature activities to do in Mauritius !

A hike you should definitely do with a guide , as the paths are not marked. To book your guided hike to Tamarin Falls , click here .

On day 9, head to Port Louis , the capital of Mauritius. During this day, you’ll be able to discover the historical heritage of the city through its colonial-era monuments.

Also, take a stroll through the covered market and the Caudan Waterfront , a lovely open-air shopping center on the waterfront.

For an in-depth exploration of Port Louis, I recommend the food tour of Port Louis which allows you to discover the city while tantalizing your taste buds!

Before or after your Port Louis visit, don’t miss out on the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden , located just 20 minutes away by car. It’s the oldest botanical garden in the Southern Hemisphere and a must-see attraction in Mauritius!

For all the details and my advice on visiting Port Louis, check out this article: What to do and see in Port Louis?

On the 10th day of your stay in Mauritius, head towards the center of the island to the small town of Moka .

Here are 2 absolute must-do activities:

  • Visit the Eurêka Creole house
  • Hike at Le Pouce mountain .

In the evening, head back north to stay in Grand Baie or the surrounding area.

Eurêka Creole house Mauritius

Over the next three days, you can enjoy the lively North Coast of Mauritius, famous for its white sandy beaches and turquoise waters .

On the agenda:

  • A series of dream beaches (Trou aux Biches, Grand Baie, Peyrébère, Mont Choisy, and more)
  • A catamaran cruise to the Northern islets
  • Scuba diving
  • A guided food tour of Grand Baie
  • An electric bike ride along the sea or a submarine tour !

I have listed the most paradisiacal beaches in Mauritius (many of which are in the North) in this article: TOP 11 most beautiful beaches of Mauritius

The next stage of your Mauritius road trip takes you for 3 days to the area of Morne Brabant and Chamarel in the Southwest.

Start by checking out the must-see natural curiosity in Mauritius: the famous Seven Colored Earth . Close by, you’ll also find Chamarel waterfall , the highest waterfall on the island.

Continue the day with a visit to Ebony Forest , a nature reserve within the primary tropical forest.

Finish this 14th day of your Mauritius road trip by visiting Chamarel Rhumerie to discover all the secrets of making the famous sugar cane liquor.

Seven Colored Earth of Chamarel

Stay in Chamarel and wake up early the next day to climb to the top of Morne Brabant !

An amazing hike awaits you with a breath-taking panorama at the summit!

Afterwards, you can relax on the beautiful Morne beach , right at the foot of the mountain.

The next day, you’ll set out for a boat trip to the small islet off Morne: Île aux Bénitiers, with swimming and snorkeling breaks and a lunch served on board ! A truly relaxing day awaits.

On day 7 of your Mauritius road trip, embark on the Tea Route , a journey that takes you through 3 stages to learn everything about Mauritian tea production:

  • Stage 1 : Domaine des Aubineaux, to learn more about the tea industry in Mauritius.
  • Stage 2 : Bois Chéri, where you’ll visit the tea plantations and production factory.
  • Stage 3 : Domaine de Saint-Aubin, where the sugar and vanilla used in the iconic Mauritian tea are produced.

You can tour this route independently with your rental car , or choose to go with a guide for a more relaxed experience without worrying about the route.

To book your “Tea Route” day trip with a driver-guide, click below:

route du thé bois chéri Ile Maurice

On day 18, it’s time to say goodbye to Mauritius, but not quite, as you’re flying to Rodrigues , a small Mauritian island located about 500km away.

Upon arrival, you’ll need to rent a car. The island is small and rather remote, so there are only a few small rental agencies. I can recommend Rodrigues 2000 Tours for reliable and serious service. I used them, and everything was perfect.

(If you’ve tried another rental service and had a good experience, feel free to let me know in the comments below this article! 🙂 )

On your first day, take a stroll along the East Coast to discover small wild beaches and coves . Don’t miss the stunning Trou d’Argent beach !

Then, go admire the sunset from Mont Limon .

The next day, visit the capital Port Mathurin and then head to Pointe Diable for a canoe trip to Île aux Cocos .

Rodrigues Island visit

And just like that, it’s already day 20 of your Mauritius road trip!

This day is dedicated to exploring the southern part of Rodrigues , with a boat trip from Anse Mourouk to see two small wild islands: Île aux Chats and Île Hermitage!

If you have another full day before heading home, you should visit Grande Montagne Nature Reserve , which shelters one of the last endemic forests of Rodrigues.

If this 3-week itinerary tempts you, don’t forget that you can find it in detail in my article: 3-Week Road Trip in Mauritius , where I also give you all my tips and a selection of the best hotels at each stage!

Defining the itinerary of your Mauritius road trip is the first thing to do in planning your journey.

Then, you also need to figure out where you’re going to stay at each stop!

To save you time, I’ve prepared a list of the best accommodations in each region, suitable for all budgets !

You can find my selection of the best hotels to stay at in Mauritius in my articles dedicated to each town and region, as well as in my itinerary guides.

You can also access them directly by clicking on the links below:

  • Grand Baie (Northern region): where to stay?

Many travelers mistakenly think (wrongly) that healthcare in Mauritius is affordable and that they don’t need travel insurance. But in reality, the public health system is fragile and even the simplest consultation in a private clinic can be very expensive!

That’s why it’s essential to have travel insurance with good medical coverage before leaving.

For safe travels , I recommend the following two insurances ( both include epidemic coverage , such as for Covid-19, which is very important!)

To subscribe, it’s very simple, just click on the orange links below :

  • ACS AMI Globe Partner : Medical insurance and repatriation
  • Assur Travel Summum : Premium insurance (medical, repatriation, luggage theft, flight delay, cancellation, and more!)

And there you have it, the end of this guide on the best road-trip itineraries in Mauritius! I hope it will help you to plan your next vacation to perfection.

A Local’s Guide to Getting Around Mauritius

So you’ve finally booked your plane ticket and are now wondering how to get around Mauritius Island or what are the best modes of transport in Mauritius.

Since I live in Mauritius I know all about the best ways of getting around the island and today I’ll share my insider tips with you in this blog post.

Whether you want to immerse yourself in the local way of life by taking the public bus or prefer the flexibility of having your own rental car or simply want to have someone drive you around, this guide will show you exactly how to travel around Mauritius on any budget.

So without further ado, here are the best ways of getting around Mauritius Island.

How to get from Mauritius Airport to your hotel?

First and foremost, you might also be wondering how to get from Mauritius Airport to your hotel.

The best way to get from the airport to your hotel is to pre-book a private airport transfer here . It’s sometimes cheaper to book online as opposed to booking directly at the airport, plus the driver will already be waiting for you with your name written on a sign.

CLICK HERE TO BOOK A PRIVATE AIRPORT TRANSFER

Unless your hotel is located in Mahebourg, I don’t recommend taking the bus as it will be very time-consuming.

Plus, it isn’t the most comfortable way of getting to your hotel, especially if you’re traveling with lots of luggage which is why I recommend pre-booking your airport transfer instead.

How to get around Mauritius Island?

The best way of getting around Mauritius is by car as you’ll have more flexibility to explore at your own pace instead of being tied to schedules.

Some of the main tourist attractions in Mauritius like Chamarel Seven Colored Earth ,  Alexandra Falls viewpoint , or Black River Gorges  aren’t accessible by public bus, so renting a car will be your best bet.

Car rental in Mauritius is very affordable, plus British, French, and South African nationals can use their local driver’s license to drive in the country.

You can read my detailed guide to driving in Mauritius which includes my top tips and everything you need to know such as the requirements for renting a car, road conditions, speed limits, updated gas/petrol prices, parking, etc.

If you’d like to rent a car in Mauritius, I recommend booking through Discover Cars as it allows you to compare the rates of different car rental companies (both local and international) so you get the best deal.

Another advantage of using Discover Cars is that you can also purchase full insurance coverage for about US$ 7 per day which can be used on top of the insurance provided by the car rental company if you want extra peace of mind.

If you’re wondering how to get around Mauritius on a budget, the best option is to use the public bus.

The bus network in Mauritius is quite extensive and travels to almost all towns and villages, except for the places mentioned above.

Buses in Mauritius generally operate from 5.30 a.m to 8 p.m at 10-minute to 1-hour intervals.

As of 2023, a single bus ticket costs between Rs 17 and Rs 44 (slightly more for air-con or Express buses) which is about USD 1, depending on the distance covered. Note that tickets can only be bought on board from the conductor.

While it’s very cheap to travel around Mauritius by bus, the main disadvantages are that journeys can be long and schedules are sometimes erratic. So if you’re in a hurry to get somewhere I would recommend traveling by car or taxi instead.

In case you can only afford to travel by bus, be sure to avoid the peak hours (7.30 a.m to 9.30 a.m and 4 p.m to 6 p.m). Most of the buses will be full at this time, plus you might get stuck in traffic.

Tip : If you’re traveling between Grand Baie and Port Louis for example, take the Express bus instead of the standard bus as the latter usually makes several stops in between resulting in long tiring journeys.

Another thing that makes traveling by bus in Mauritius somewhat challenging is that the bus routes and schedules aren’t available on Google Maps.

However, you can use this website  to get a rough idea of the different bus routes throughout the country. As for the schedule, it’s best to inquire directly at the bus terminal or simply ask a local.

Traveling by bus is definitely a great way to experience the local way of life and at the same time, take in the beautiful views along the small towns and villages.

If budget isn’t an issue, another viable option for getting around Mauritius is by private taxi.

Almost all hotels have their own taxi services but these are usually more expensive compared to independent taxis.

If you want to hire a taxi for the day to visit several attractions, you can book one here with an English, French, or German-speaking driver/guide. For an Italian-speaking driver/guide, you can book here instead .

Note that official taxis always have a yellow sticker on the side while tourist vans/buses have a blue sticker or their own company logo.

Never travel with an unofficial taxi as both you and the driver may have to pay a fine if you get caught by the police.

Those on a tighter budget can opt for a shared taxi instead. Prices are fixed and it costs about Rs 60 or less per person, depending on the distance covered.

For example, if you want to go from Flacq to Belle Mare, you can usually find shared taxis near the bus terminal here . Or if you want to travel from Flacq to Port Louis, the shared taxi stand is found here .

There is no Uber in Mauritius but there are a few local taxi apps that you can find online by doing a quick Google search. I’ve personally never used them as I’ve seen mostly mixed reviews but the option is there if you’d like to give it a try.

Tram (Metro Express)

The tram, commonly referred to as Metro Express, is another way to get around Mauritius Island.

It currently has 2 transit lines connecting the capital city of Port Louis to all towns in Mauritius, including some villages in between.

The main line runs between Port Louis and Curepipe while the other runs between Rose Hill and Reduit. You can have a look at this map to see the entire route.

Tickets can be bought at the station from the ticket machines and cost between Rs 35 and Rs 55 (slightly less if you have the ME Card).

Unlike the bus where only cash is accepted, you can pay for your metro ticket by cash and card.

The standard operating hours of the tram are from 6 a.m to 7 p.m daily at 10-minute intervals. As of 31 March 2023, the hours have been extended to 9 p.m on Fridays and Saturdays only (at 30-minute intervals from 7-9 p.m).

The main advantage of using the Metro Express is that it avoids most of the traffic, however, it doesn’t go to all the main tourist attractions.

The only time it would make sense to use the Metro Express as a tourist on a short trip to Mauritius would be if you’re planning to do some shopping at the Quatre Bornes market or visit Trou aux Cerfs in Curepipe.

Also, if you want to go to 7 Cascades by public transportation, you can take the tram from Port Louis to Quatre Bornes or Curepipe and then take a bus to the village of Henrietta.

people waiting for the tram

Another way to get around Mauritius is to rent a scooter or motorbike although this isn’t my preferred mode of transportation as most accidents in Mauritius involve two-wheelers.

I wouldn’t recommend renting one unless you’re very experienced and are confident that you can handle the roads, especially those around Chamarel and Chamouny which are quite curvy and steep.

Note that it’s mandatory to wear a helmet when driving a scooter or motorbike. If you’re driving after dark, you’ll also need to wear a reflective jacket.

If you’d like to explore beyond Mauritius to Rodrigues Island , which by the way features so many incredible places like the pristine white-sand beach of Trou D’Argent, François Leguat Reserve, or Mont Limon, you can take a 1.5-hour flight with Air Mauritius.

Flights are available 4 times a day and cost around USD 225 for a return ticket.

Another option for traveling between Mauritius and Rodrigues is by sea. You can refer to this website to check the schedule.

Organized Tours

Finally, if none of the above works for you, you can simply book an organized tour like this highly-rated private southwest tour of Mauritius which includes visits to Chamarel, Black River Gorges, Grand Bassin, Trou aux Cerfs as well as hotel pick-up and drop-off, and an English, French, or German-speaking guide.

For more ideas, you can read my guide to the best tours and excursions in Mauritius .

Hi Steph, Nice, useful and informative article. Thank you :)

I will be travelling to the island in a couple of months – quick question about the bus, how do I distinguish between the regular bus and the express bus? Seperate bus stops or the same?

Thank you :) You’ll know that it’s an express bus as you’ll see “Express” or “EXP” written along with the bus route and number. Although sometimes they might only have the bus route and number written. If you’re at a bus terminal, the express bus might be at a different location so it’s best to ask there. Hope this helps :)
