The largest cruise ship that sails Alaska’s Inside Passage just visited Ketchikan for the first time

August 3, 2021 by Molly Lubbers, KRBD - Ketchikan

largest alaska cruise ship

For the first time ever, the largest cruise ship to visit Alaska has made its way to Ketchikan.

At 1,138 feet long and 136 feet wide, the Ovation of the Seas ship loomed over downtown when it docked at Berths 1 and 2. As the only cruise ship in town, there was plenty of space to accommodate it.

Ketchikan Mayor Bob Sivertsen says its ability to easily fit is partially thanks to the sparse roster of cruise ships this year.

“It may be more difficult during a very, very busy season,” he said. “So the timing, and the placement of it is going to be even more of a challenge. But Ketchikan’s up to the challenge.”

Royal Caribbean Director of Destination Development Preston Carnahan   said it took years of work and coordination to get a ship of this size here — including removing a navigational hazard in the Tongass Narrows.

That meant blasting a rock pinnacle  located near Berth 2.

“By removing that rock, it basically makes a much safer waterway,” he said. “And that was kind of in cooperation with everyone to bring bigger ships that have a deeper draft.”

The project finished up last year, but he said the pandemic halted any plans to send a ship of this class to Ketchikan. That is, until now. August 2 was the first time that the ship has docked in the city, and cruise director Dan Whitney says it’s also the ship’s first port call in Alaska since the pandemic started.

“It’s exciting to get back because you just didn’t know  when that was going to happen,” he said. “And for it to be happening now, i’s almost surreal.”

It’s not carrying paying passengers. This is a simulated voyage mandated by CDC guidelines. It’s a dry run of sorts to show that pandemic mitigation protocols can be applied. Typically, the Ovation of the Seas can fit more than 4,000 passengers, but just under 600 were on the ship this time, said Carnahan. And he said it won’t be stopping in Ketchikan again this season.

“ I think today is significant because it opens the door for the future of this class of ships to start coming to Ketchikan,” he said. “And I think this class of ship is the future in Alaska.”

Carnahan said the preparation for this milestone is significant. It wasn’t just the most recent changes, he said, but a legacy of them.

“It doesn’t happen in a year. And Ketchikan and Ketchikanites have adapted over the last, say, five to 10 years to make this happen,” he said. “So this didn’t happen by accident.”

Ketchikan Mayor Bob Sivertsen said that the city will continue to adapt next year. There’s no word on when this specific cruise ship will be back, but the city is looking ahead to a fuller season in 2022.

Two of the world’s biggest cruise ships will sail in Alaskan waters, with one arriving in 2018

The bays and inlets of Alaska’s Inside Passage have traditionally drawn small cruise ships, which find it easier to maneuver into tight passages and shallow waters. But things are changing, Two mega-ships have been scheduled to begin cruising the popular route, with the first arriving next summer.

The new Norwegian Cruise Line ship Bliss carries 4,000 passengers and will start making port calls in June. In 2019, the 5,000-passenger Ovation of the Seas, a Royal Caribbean International ship that debuted in 2016, will begin visiting too.

Most Alaskan cruise ships carry less than half as many passengers as the two newcomers, which weigh in among the 10 largest cruise ships in the world. Each carries an additional 1,200 to 1,500 crew members.

The Norwegian Bliss will sail weekly seven-day Alaska voyages that will depart Seattle on Saturdays, visiting Alaska’s Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, and Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

Ovation of the Seas will also homeport in Seattle, sailing weeklong cruises to Alaska that will include destinations such as Juneau and Victoria. It will join another Royal Caribbean ship in the region, Radiance of the Seas , which will offer seven-night itineraries between Seward and Vancouver, British Columbia.

More than 1.8 million people toured the nation’s largest state (by area) last year, setting a record, according to the Alaska Tourism Industry Assn .

Cruise ship passengers make up the majority of Alaska’s visitors, totaling 1,025,900 last year. Cruise ship volume is expected to continue to grow in 2018, when Norwegian Bliss arrives and Princess Cruises , a heavyweight in the Alaska cruise market, increases its capacity.

Alaskan port cities are making changes to accommodate the new ships. But not everyone is happy. Last summer, the Ketchikan Council discussed trying to limit how many cruise passengers arrive in a single day but didn’t arrive at any decisions, according to reports.

Normally, the busiest cruise ship days bring about 10,000 visitors to Ketchikan, which has a population of about 7,000. Some members of the community worry that as many as 20,000 visitors could arrive on the same day.

Largest cruise ship to visit Alaska docks in Ketchikan for first time

For the first time ever, the largest cruise ship to visit Alaska has made its way to Ketchikan. As KRBD’s Molly Lubbers reports, the city had to put in a lot of work to host a ship of this size.

Inside the largest cruise ship to sail Alaska waters

Explorer of the Seas

The biggest cruise ship to sail Alaska waters made its first stop in Skagway May 23. The Explorer of the Seas carries nearly 5,000 people. KHNS took a tour of the floating city.

“Ladies and gentlemen, good morning, everyone, and welcome aboard the Explorer of the Seas for this momentous occasion,” said Captain Rick Sullivan. “It’s not just welcoming the ship, but it is also welcoming the largest cruise ship that’s ever been to Skagway. That is history today. Thank you for increasing the length of the dock so we could fit here. It’s kinda tight, right?”

Explorer deck

The Explorer tied up at the end of the railroad dock, right behind another massive ship – the Celebrity Millennium. White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad had to build some additional infrastructure to accommodate the 1,000-foot-long Explorer.

“You know, we have a new mooring dolphin. We’ve done some other things for this and just the sheer volume that comes with it,” said Tyler Rose of White Pass.

Explorer captain

So what’s inside such a colossal ship? Well, if you’ve ever wondered where you can find a shopping mall, ice-skating rink, rock-climbing wall and casino all in one place, floating on the ocean, this is it.

“So this is one of our entertainment venues,” said Miriam Palomares, the ship’s group coordinator.

Explorer atrium

She led representatives from Skagway’s government, White Pass and the National Park Service through a gleaming, shop-lined hall called the Royal Promenade.

“The Royal Promenade — we have lots of stores … you have the sensation that you’re in New York. When we are in port, all the stores are closed, of course. But at night or at sea, all the time they are open. So you don’t feel like you’re in the middle of the ocean, you feel like you are in land. Like you are home,” said Palomares.

Explorer casino

That is, if your home includes a theater, arcade, casino and more.

“Royal Caribbean [ships], we have so much stuff to do,” said Michael Rasmussen, the Explorer’s hotel director.

He enjoys the “Flow Rider” surf simulator, basketball court and array of restaurants and bars.

Rasmussen oversees the majority of the ship’s 1,200 crew members. He says it’s eye-opening to work with people who represent around 60 different countries.

Explorer golf

“Where in the world would you sit down for dinner with people from the Philippines, from India, from Croatia, China, Australia, Canada, Russia? We sit down, talk about the same issues, the same concerns in life and we’re growing and learning as people. You get a better understanding of where you sit in this thing called life,” said Rasmussen.

“We meet people from all over the world,” said Corey Freeman, a passenger on the ship. He was hanging out in one of the lounges with his wife, Patty.

Explorer stage

“Look around, [Alaska’s] just beautiful,” Patty Freeman said. “What else would be more beautiful than here?”

The Freemans go on two cruises each year, one in May and one in September.

This is their first time on the Explorer. It’s the biggest ship they’ve ever been on. And Patty says, there have been some challenges because of that. She says they got special tickets, which were supposed to help them avoid long lines. But that promise hasn’t played out.

Explorer dining

“We’re supposed to go ahead of the line. What is this?” Patty said.

The ship is so big, that even our tour guide gets lost showing us around.

Explorer promenade

To find a way off the ship, we end up walking through a less luxurious area – the crew deck.

When the tour is over, Skagway Tourism Director Cody Jennings reflects on what she saw.

Explorer lounge

“It’s pretty stunning,” Jennings said. “The casino, the ice skating rink, the theaters, all the various dining and other entertainment options. It’s a little floating city.”

A city with a population about five times the size of Skagway’s.

The Explorer will be back at the railroad dock every Monday until the end of the summer.

Giant Royal Caribbean ship, Ovation of the Seas, to move to Alaska

largest alaska cruise ship

Get ready for the Battle of the Megaships in Alaska.

Royal Caribbean today will announce it's re-deploying one of its newest, biggest vessels, Ovation of the Seas , to The Last Frontier for the summer of 2019.

The announcement comes as rival Norwegian Cruise Line prepares to send a giant new ship of its own , Norwegian Bliss, to the state.

At 168,666 tons, one-year-old Ovation is tied with two sisters as the world's fifth largest cruise vessel. It can hold nearly 5,000 passengers. Scheduled to debut in April, Bliss is expected to be roughly the same size.

RELATED:    Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas, world's largest cruise ship, nearing completion |  Symphony to debut ahead of schedule

Currently based year-round in Asia and Australia, Ovation will operate seven-night sailings to Alaska out of Seattle after re-positioning to the city from Sydney, Australia in the spring of 2019. Bliss also will be based in Seattle.

While mega-size cruise ships as big as 226,963 tons have appeared in the Caribbean and Europe in recent years, nearly all of the cruise vessels spending summers in Alaska still measure under 100,000 tons. This year's size leaders in the state were Royal Caribbean's 138,194-ton Explorer of the Seas and Celebrity Cruises' 121,878-ton Celebrity Solstice. The largest ships Alaska cruise giant Princess had in Alaska this year — Ruby Princess and Emerald Princess — are 113,561 tons.

Ovation will take the place of Explorer in Alaska. A second, smaller Royal Caribbean vessel that spends summers in the state, the 90,090-ton Radiance of the Seas, will remain in the market.

Ovation's coming move to North America will mark a notable shift in its focus. Completed just 19 months ago, Ovation initially was touted as a ship  custom designed for the Chinese market  that would spend much of its time based near China's capital, Beijing, catering to local vacationers. At the time, demand for cruises in China was booming. But demand for cruises in China has softened over the past year, even as interest in Alaska cruises has soared.

Royal Caribbean is just one of several cruise lines that have been trimming capacity in China. Earlier this year, Princess Cruises announced its new ship  custom-built for the China market , Majestic Princess, would redeploy to Australia for nearly eight months of the year.

Still, Royal Caribbean remains committed to the China market, Royal Caribbean chairman Richard Fain told investors Tuesday during a conference call to discuss third quarter earnings. He noted that a new sister to Ovation scheduled to debut in 2019, Spectrum of the Seas , will be based in China.

Ovation is the third vessel in Royal Caribbean's much-ballyhooed Quantum Class series, which began rolling out in 2014. Boasting all the trappings of major land resorts, the ships are chock full of deck-top fun zones, pools, restaurants, bars, lounges and innovative entertainment venues. Notable features include skydiving simulators,  bars with robot bartenders , bumper cars, and glass capsules on mechanical arms that rise into the air for bird's-eye views — all industry firsts.

The first ship in the series, Quantum of the Seas, also has been devoted to the China market. It sails year-round out of Shanghai. The second ship in the series, Anthem of the Seas, operates year-round out of the New York area to the Bahamas and Caribbean.

Royal Caribbean's new Alaska sailings on Ovation will be available to book the week of Dec. 11.

A cruise vacation to Alaska is a profound adventure. The spectacular natural beauty, rugged wilderness, massive glaciers and endless opportunities for wildlife viewing make a trip to the 49th state a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many travelers. As an added bonus, cruise ships can reach remote parts of the state, including Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve: one of the most significant (and picturesque) marine and wildlife sanctuaries in the world.

With the ever-growing popularity of the destination and an extended cruising season (some lines now travel to Alaska between April and October), more ships are heading north to the shores of The Great Land. Alaska cruise ships: Eurodam , Koningsdam , Nieuw Amsterdam , Noordam , Westerdam , Zaandam Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Anchorage , Fairbanks and Whittier, Alaska; Seattle; Vancouver, British Columbia Starting from: $379 per person for seven-night Alaska Inside Passage cruise on May 1, 2024, or Sept. 22, 2024. Round-trip from Vancouver.

Holland America Line has been cruising Alaska's pristine glacial waters for more than 75 years – longer than any other cruise line. On top of that, the line features more voyages to Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve than its competitors. Seven-night round-trip sailings depart from either Seattle or Vancouver, while cruisetours – Holland America Line 's sea- and land-based packages – leave from several cities and extend each trip to nine to 18 days.

If this will be your first visit to Alaska, consider booking the comprehensive 14-day Yukon + Denali cruisetour. This Alaska adventure includes a voyage aboard Koningsdam, plus a three-night stay at Holland America's exclusive lodge in Denali National Park, where you'll have the opportunity to see Alaska's big five: moose, caribou, grizzly bears, Dall sheep and wolves – and book bucket list activities like flightseeing over Denali. If it's a picture-perfect day, your pilot might even be able to land on the tallest mountain in North America, also known as "The Great One." Other excursions include meeting dog mushers from the Iditarod, landing on the Yanert Glacier, heli-hiking or embarking on a covered wagon adventure on the Alaska tundra. The Yukon Territory portion of this trip is exclusive to Holland America; while there, visit the mining town of Dawson City and learn about Northern Canada's Klondike Gold Rush of August 1896.

Another highlight of sailing Alaska with Holland America is the Alaska Up Close program, which immerses guests in an array of expert-led lectures and excursions on board and shore. When it comes to dining , Holland America is the only cruise line to achieve the Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) certification, which means cruisers will enjoy certified sustainable wild Alaska seafood on board (think: Alaskan king crab legs and fresh salmon). You may also have access to culinary excursions in partnership with Food & Wine magazine, as well as special offerings like Alaska salmon bakes.

Cruisers should also consider one of the Holland America's new itineraries for 2024: the 28-night Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice voyage aboard Westerdam, round-trip from Seattle. This sailing, which departs on June 9, 2024, features highlights like crossing the Arctic Circle; celebrating the summer solstice in Nome, Alaska; and watching Kodiak bears – the largest bears in the world – on Kodiak Island.

Insider tip: Sample Holland America Line's famous Dutch pea soup while glacier viewing on the outside decks. The crew passes around mugs of the warm soup in this Holland America tradition that gives a nod to the line's heritage – and keeps guests warm on chilly summer days in Alaska.

Princess Cruises

Alaska cruise ships: Grand Princess , Sapphire Princess , Royal Princess , Ruby Princess , Majestic Princess , Discovery Princess , Crown Princess Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Seattle; Anchorage, Alaska; Vancouver, British Columbia; San Francisco ; Fairbanks, Alaska Starting from: $398 per person for seven-night cruise from Anchorage (Whittier, Alaska) to Vancouver on May 18, 2024

Princess Cruises has a long history in Alaska, boasting more than 50 years of sailing to the Great Land. Cruise itineraries last between seven and 14 nights, and many visit the Inside Passage. Princess Cruises also owns and operates five wilderness lodges for guests of its cruisetours, plus exclusive "Direct to the Wilderness" rail service to those properties. The line's wide selection of cruisetours includes independent adventures and off-the-beaten-path destinations, like Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve, the largest national park in the U.S. For travelers seeking the highest level of service and the most time on land, the Connoisseur cruisetour is a good option, including up to 10 nights ashore following the seven-day Voyage of the Glaciers cruise. The Connoisseur trip is hosted by a tour director and includes select sightseeing outings and most meals in the fare.

Princess' special programming, North to Alaska, offers guests unique insights into the history and culture of the region with visits from local Alaskans, photography sessions, demonstrations on lumberjacking and excursions like Cook My Catch, where guests will go fishing (with a guide), then bring their fish back for chefs to prepare for dinner at one of the designated Princess lodges.

There are two new Princess cruisetours to consider for 2024. The 15-night National Parks Tour includes a seven-day cruise, visits to five national parks, scenic rail travel and a total of eight evenings across four Princess wilderness lodges. Meanwhile, the Katmai National Park Tour is a nine-day adventure that takes guests to the famed Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park & Preserve to see bears feasting on wild salmon in Alaska's wilderness.

Insider tip: While visiting Denali National Park, be sure to check out the Princess Treehouse at the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge. Built by Pete Nelson of Animal Planet's "Treehouse Masters," the treehouse offers a different perspective of Denali and features "Sappy Hour" and other fun activities.

Alaska cruise ships: Norwegian Encore , Norwegian Bliss , Norwegian Jewel , Norwegian Sun , Norwegian Spirit Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Seattle ; Vancouver, British Columbia; Seward, Alaska Starting from: $349 per person for seven-night sailing between Seward and Vancouver (itineraries visit Hubbard Glacier and Skagway, or Glacier Bay, Skagway and Juneau). Norwegian Cruise Line has one of the longest seasons in Alaska, extending from April through October. The line operates two of its larger ships in Alaska: Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore. These ships feature a plethora of onboard activities to keep kids and adults entertained, like racetracks, laser tag, mini-golf, complimentary kids and teen clubs, video arcades, themed parties, live performances and more. Families will also enjoy entertainment by Nickelodeon, character breakfasts, salmon bakes and sessions with a park ranger who comes on board to narrate the Glacier Bay passage. You'll find many spacious room options on board perfectly suited to larger families – especially in The Haven, the line's exclusive ship-within-a-ship concept. In addition, Norwegian Cruise Line offers select cruise deals where third and fourth guests sail free .

There are two new Alaska shore excursions for 2024: the Mendenhall Glacier Canoe Paddle & Trek and the Fly-In Norris Glacier Hike and Packraft. The first outing takes place in Juneau , where you'll paddle a 12-person canoe across Mendenhall Lake to reach the towering glacier. Prepare to be surrounded by the spectacular setting of Tongass National Park, a 400-foot waterfall and an Arctic tern nesting ground. The second excursion, also in Juneau, takes participants on a flight into the Alaska wilderness via floatplane; you'll then paddle across a pristine glacial lake and hike the surface of Norris Glacier. Unforgettable sights along the way include densely forested mountains; the mouth of the Taku Inlet, a waterway that offers access to Juneau Icefield; and plenty of wildlife, including sea lions and bald eagles.

Also new for 2024 is the option to take the Denali Talkeetna Explorer tour after your cruise. (This cruisetour previously only took place prior to the voyage.) The 13-day sea and land package, Denali Talkeetna Explorer – Northbound Cruisetour, is available on three dates in 2024 in combination with a Norwegian Jewel sailing. The package includes a seven-night cruise; a total of six nights in Fairbanks, Denali and Talkeetna; a stop at the Trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline; a riverboat cruise in Fairbanks; a visit to an Iditarod dog musher's kennel; a deluxe glass-domed Alaska Railroad journey between Fairbanks and Denali; and more. You'll also have free time to book optional shore excursions like whitewater rafting, park tours, helicopter flightseeing and other outdoor adventures.

Insider tip: If you're sailing on Norwegian Bliss or Norwegian Encore, be sure to grab a front-row seat in the Observation Lounge when sailing in Glacier Bay Park & Preserve. This expansive space on Deck 15 at the bow of the ship offers breathtaking panoramic views from the comfort of inside the ship.

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean's Ovation of the Seas at the Hubbard Glacier in Alaska.

Alaska cruise ships: Radiance of the Seas , Quantum of the Seas , Brilliance of the Seas , Ovation of the Seas Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Seward, Alaska; Vancouver, British Columbia; Seattle Starting from: $439 per person for seven-night cruise on Radiance of the Seas, Seward to Vancouver on May 24, 2024

Royal Caribbean International offers seven-night cruise-only Alaska options (some featuring the Inside Passage) and extended cruisetours (lasting nine to 13 days) with land portions before or after the voyage. Cruisetours may visit Denali National Park & Preserve, among other highlights. The line also offers select "kids sail free" itineraries, which will appeal to families.

If you want nonstop entertainment while on board, choose one of Royal Caribbean International 's two larger Quantum Class vessels: Quantum of the Seas or Ovation of the Seas. Both megaships accommodate approximately 4,900 passengers. If you prefer a smaller ship, consider booking one of the Radiance Class vessels, which hold a maximum of around 2,500 guests.

Quantum Class ships have multiple outdoor attractions that provide panoramic views of the scenery. For example, the surf simulator, FlowRider, affords views of magnificent snow-capped mountains and glaciers all around the ship. If you're adept at rock climbing, this is another chance for optimal scenic viewing – at 40 feet above the deck. Additional entertainment includes free-fall skydiving at RipCord by iFly, outdoor movie nights, live performances and musical entertainment, bumper cars, an escape room, a sports court and indoor pools for those cool Alaska summer days.

Insider tip: For more awe-inspiring vistas, take a ride on North Star. Exclusive to Royal Caribbean (on Quantum and Ovation of the Seas), the glass-enclosed capsule rises 300 feet above sea level while suspended over the ocean.

Adventure-seeking couples will have many options to choose from during Celebrity Cruises ' 2024 Alaska season. The line's six- and seven-night cruise-only itineraries include up-close views of the Dawes Glacier in the Endicott Arm Fjord and the Hubbard Glacier, the world's longest tidewater glacier at 76 miles long. For an in-depth exploration of Alaska's interior, Celebrity's cruisetours extend the trip to a maximum of 13 nights and feature small-town destinations like Talkeetna, Alaska – the quirky village that inspired the 1990s television show "Northern Exposure." There are also themed tours centered on wildlife viewing and national parks, as well as culinary tours highlighting the flavors of Alaska.

Couples will also find plenty of adult-focused activities and entertainment on board, no matter which vessel they choose. Each ship offers a spa, multiple bars and lounges, and an excellent selection of complimentary and specialty restaurants. Celebrity's three Alaska-bound ships carry between 2,158 guests (Celebrity Summit) and 2,908 passengers (Celebrity Edge). Celebrity Edge, the newest of the ships, offers immersive entertainment and especially beautiful public spaces – like Grand Plaza, a three-story venue at the heart of the vessel.

For extra privacy during your couples' vacation, consider splurging on a suite or villa in The Retreat. This all-inclusive space features luxurious accommodations; a private lounge; a sundeck (unavailable on Celebrity Solstice); and a private restaurant, Luminae at The Retreat. The swanky culinary venue serves dishes curated by renowned French chef Daniel Boulud. In addition, you'll have a team of attendants, butlers and concierges to indulge every whim.

Insider tip: Book your Alaska cruise on Celebrity Edge. The outward-facing design of the ship and expansive outdoor spaces, including the Magic Carpet, offer guests excellent viewing opportunities of Alaska's vast landscapes, calving glaciers and wildlife, including humpback whales in the Inside Passage and around Juneau and Sitka.

Best Luxury: Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea Cruises

Regent seven seas cruises.

Alaska cruise ships: Seven Seas Explorer Departure cities: Vancouver, British Columbia; Seward, Alaska Starting from: $4,699 per person (all-inclusive) for seven-night cruise, Vancouver to Seward on May 1, 2024

Regent's Seven Seas Explorer will spend the 2024 season in Alaska, with the first sailing embarking from Vancouver, British Columbia, on May 1, 2024. The line offers 20 seven-night voyages and two 14-night sailings between May and September. The 746-passenger ship provides an in-depth exploration of Alaska's wilderness, thanks to the vessel's smaller size and all-balcony suites. Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' all-inclusive fares include free unlimited shore excursions (though select tours come with a fee); complimentary fine wines and spirits; dining at specialty restaurants; 24-hour room service; unlimited Wi-Fi access; prepaid gratuities; free valet laundry service; and more. Depending on the suite category, guests may also receive a pre- and post-cruise hotel stay with their voyage.

Complimentary shore excursions are available in a number of Alaska ports. In Ketchikan, sign up for the Tongass Rainforest Expedition, the Great Alaska Lumberjack Show or the Alaskan Lodge Adventure & Seafest. (Note: Some excursions in Ketchikan, such as the Alaska Fishing & Wilderness Dining option, come with an additional fee.) In Juneau, guests can take the complimentary hiking adventure through the Mendenhall Glacier National Recreation Area, home to black bears, mountain goats and other wildlife. Cruisers can also dine on wild Alaska salmon grilled over a fire at the Gold Creek Salmon Bake.

Insider tip: Take advantage of the complimentary shore excursions during your cruise. These are tours you'd normally have to pay for on a ship that's not all-inclusive – and that can add up quickly.

Silversea Cruises

Pool bar on the Silver Nova.

Courtesy of Silversea Cruises

Alaska cruise ships: Silver Nova , Silver Muse , Silver Shadow Departure cities: Seward, Alaska; Vancouver, British Columbia Starting from: $3,450 per person for seven-night cruise, Vancouver to Seward on Silver Muse on Aug. 1, 2024

Debuted in August 2023, Silversea's latest addition, Silver Nova, is the newest luxury vessel sailing Alaska for the 2024 season. Silver Nova features an asymmetrical design and advanced technologies that make it Silversea Cruises ' most environmentally friendly vessel yet. With just 728 guests, spacious suites (some affording 270-degree views) and outdoor spaces showcasing The Great Land's pristine wilderness, Silver Nova is an excellent luxury option for an Alaska adventure. Silversea offers seven-night itineraries on its three Alaska ships, plus longer voyages on Silver Muse and Silver Shadow.

Silversea's all-inclusive fares include pre- and post-cruise hotel stays; complimentary nonalcoholic and alcoholic beverages; in-room minibars; gourmet dining; all gratuities; at least one excursion per port; butler service in every suite; and other upscale amenities. Complimentary Alaska excursions include a scenic railway tour aboard the White Pass and Yukon Railway in Skagway, the Sea Otter & Wildlife Quest in Sitka Sound and more. You can also visit the Iditarod dogs' summer camp in Juneau. For an additional cost, Silversea offers more exclusive experiences, like a helicopter ride to Mendenhall Glacier followed by a dogsledding adventure with a team of Alaskan huskies in Juneau, or a remote fly-fishing trip in Sitka.

Insider tip: Spend some time on Deck 10; you'll enjoy unobstructed views of the spectacular scenery from the comfort of the heated pool, thanks to the asymmetrical design of the pool deck.

UnCruise Adventures

Alaska cruise ships: Wilderness Discoverer, Wilderness Legacy, Safari Endeavor, Safari Explorer, Safari Quest Departure cities: Ketchikan, Juneau, Whittier, Dutch Harbor and Sitka, Alaska; Seattle Starting from: $3,600 per person for seven-night cruise, Juneau to Ketchikan (or reverse itinerary) on Wilderness Discoverer; various dates between April and September 2024

UnCruise's expedition-style small ships call on ports and remote areas in Alaska that larger ships can't access, taking guests to locales that the line coins, "UnAlaska." The five ships operating in The Great Land accommodate between 22 passengers (Safari Quest) and 86 guests (Wilderness Legacy), and there are seven-, 12- and 14-night itineraries to choose from. You can also book optional land tours, including a Denali & Talkeetna Wilderness Rail Adventure. Expedition teams take guests on kayaking, skiffing, paddleboarding, bushwhacking, waterfall walks and hiking excursions close to the glaciers and visit secluded areas and waterway passages known for optimal wildlife viewing.

Cruise fares include group transfers to and from the ship; all meals; premium wine, beer and liquor; all nonalcoholic beverages; daily activities; wellness amenities; onboard heritage and expedition guides; and access to guest experts. You'll need to disconnect from your devices in remote areas, as there is no Wi-Fi access on UnCruise vessels.

For a once-in-a-lifetime trip, book the 14-night Alaska's Fjords & Glaciers Bay Adventure Cruise on Wilderness Discoverer, a 76-passenger ship. This voyage includes birding in the South Marble Islands, where you'll see puffins, cormorants, oystercatchers and other bird species. You can also search for brown bears in Corner Bay, bushwhack in old-growth forests, visit the town of Haines to sample local brews and spirits, and more.

UnCruise has introduced a few new cruises for 2024 with a renewed focus on The Great Land. One of these is the Kids in Nature, Wild Woolly & Wow with Glacier Bay cruise. The seven-night, family-focused voyage departs round-trip from Juneau aboard Wilderness Legacy and is available on three dates between June and July. One highlight of the voyage is exploring off-the-grid in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve's "Outback."

A second new option is the seven-night Prince William Sound Explorer with Cordova cruise. This adventure visits dozens of glaciers; the small fishing village of Cordova; the Harriman and College glacial fjords; the islands of Knight and Montague; and multiple places where you can see orcas, humpback whales, sea otters, seals, sea lions, puffins and other wildlife. The itinerary is offered round-trip from Whittier, Alaska, on Safari Explorer throughout the summer.

Insider tip: Depending on your itinerary, you may be able to hop in a skiff directly off the ship to watch bears along the shore hunt for salmon just 100 feet away. This is an Alaska experience you can only have when sailing on a small ship.

Record high 1.5M cruise passengers expected in Ketchikan this summer

a cruise ship

Ketchikan is expecting nearly 1.5 million cruise passengers to visit this summer. If the projections hold, it would be the community’s biggest cruise season to date.

According to the  latest draft schedule , Ketchikan’s cruise season kicks off April 20 with the arrival of the Norwegian Bliss in Ward Cove. That’s one of the largest cruise ships that sail in Alaska waters – carrying up to 4,000 passengers. About a quarter of the season’s passengers are scheduled to arrive at Ward Cove, the private terminal eight miles north of downtown.

The first port call at Ketchikan’s downtown docks is scheduled for May 2 when the Carnival Miracle ties up at Berth 2. The season is scheduled to ramp up quickly from there, with the community’s first six-ship day expected on May 18.

Some Fridays during the summer months will see a total of seven large cruise ships tie up in the Ketchikan area, though only six are scheduled to be in town at any one time.

Some 1.1 million people are expected to arrive at the city’s downtown docks over the course of the season. They’ll be split fairly evenly among the city’s four berths, with about 21% at Berth 1, 26% at Berth 2, 29% at Berth 3 and 24% at Berth 4.

Altogether, Ketchikan is expecting 632 port calls throughout the season. The last call downtown is scheduled for Oct. 5, but ships will continue to dock in Ward Cove at least two days a week through the end of the season on Oct. 27.

Ketchikan city leaders are soliciting feedback ahead of the cruise season. The city is taking  online comments about the cruise ship calendar  through March 31. Those will be shared with Cruise Line Agencies of Alaska, the company that handles scheduling.

City officials are also soliciting comments on downtown traffic, parking, pedestrian access and more with a  separate online form . City Manager Delilah Walsh said Thursday that the city is not considering any major traffic changes in the immediate future but is open to suggestions.

“If there’s something that we can incorporate for ‘23, that’s great. If not, I plan to do something similar in September or sometime post-season in order to get feedback for real changes that we can make in 2024, when we’re not in this crunch-time schedule,” she said at the March 16 Ketchikan City Council meeting.

She said the city’s biggest traffic priority is ensuring that loading and unloading zones are designated. There’s a public meeting scheduled at the Ted Ferry Civic Center from 4 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21.

Princess Cruises ships ranked by size from biggest to smallest — the complete list

Gene Sloan

Are you looking for the most venue-packed, resort-like Princess Cruises ships at sea? If so, you'll want to get on one of the biggest Princess cruise ships.

The biggest Princess cruise ships are, by their very nature, the Princess ships with the most onboard restaurants, bars and showrooms, as well as the most sprawling decktop pool and lounge areas. The biggest Princess ships have the biggest casinos and spas among ships in the Princess fleet and the most cabins and suites — as well as the most variation in cabin and suite types.

With room for 4,000 passengers or more, the biggest Princess ships are truly large resorts of the sort you find at the biggest vacation destination on land. If you're in the "bigger is better" camp when it comes to a resort experience, these are the Princess ships for you.

Still, Princess doesn't just operate large vessels. The Los Angeles-based cruise giant — the fifth largest cruise line in the world — also has several relatively small cruise ships in its fleet that carry just 2,000 or 3,000 people and have a more intimate feel. In some cases, these vessels are nearly 50% smaller than the size of Princess Cruises' biggest ships. These smaller ships, notably, have less deck-top pool space and fewer interior venues than the biggest Princess cruise ships. However, with fewer people on board, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

The smallest Princess cruise ships are best for vacationers who like a more intimate, less crowded resort experience.

What is the biggest Princess cruise ship?

The biggest Princess cruise ship is the 4,300-passenger Sun Princess , which is also the line's newest vessel. It just debuted in February.

Sun Princess is the first vessel in Princess Cruises' new Sphere Class of ships, which have been designed to be much bigger and more venue-packed than the vessels in the line's last new series of ships, the Royal Class.

Sun Princess measures 177,882 gross tons, which is about 22% bigger than the biggest ship in the Royal Class (the 145,000-ton Discovery Princess). Royal Class ships range in size from 142,229 to 145,000 gross tons.

Note that gross tons is a size measurement referring to interior space, not weight.

A second ship in the Sphere Class series, Star Princess, is under construction at a shipyard in Italy and will debut in October 2025 .

For more details on Sun Princess, including what venues are on board and what it's like to sail on the vessel, see TPG's comprehensive first look at Sun Princess after an early sailing.

What is the smallest Princess cruise ship?

The smallest Princess cruise ship is the 2,000-passenger Coral Princess. Measuring just 91,267 gross tons, it's about 36% smaller than Discovery Princess, making it a significantly smaller vessel.

Coral Princess dates to 2002, a time when cruise ships were built far smaller than they are today and with far fewer venues. At 21 years old, it's also one of the two oldest vessels in the Princess fleet and will probably be phased out sometime in the next decade.

Related: The ultimate guide to Princess Cruises

While significantly smaller than the newest Princess ships, Coral Princess still has many of the signature spaces and venues found on new Princess vessels, including an Italian eatery called Sabatini's and a steakhouse.

Entertainment venues on Coral Princess include a relatively large main theater for production shows, a secondary lounge that offers comedy shows and other entertainment, and a casino. Like other Princess ships, the top deck of the vessel is mostly devoted to pool areas with hot tubs and lounge chairs. There's also a spa.

While smaller and older than the typical Princess ship, Coral Princess has a loyal following among Princess fans who prefer smaller and more intimate ships.

Are bigger Princess cruise ships coming?

It's not clear yet. Princess currently has one new ship on order, Star Princess. But the final size of Star Princess won't be known until the vessel debuts in late 2025.

Star Princess will be the second vessel in the new Sphere Class of ships at Princess. It's likely to be very similar in size to the first vessel in the series, the new Sun Princess. But it's not uncommon for each new vessel in a series to be slightly bigger than the one before.

Star Princess is currently under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard near Monfalcone, Italy.

Note that this isn't the first time Princess has named a ship Sun Princess or Star Princess. Both are recycled names from past Princess ships. Princess operated smaller vessels under the Sun Princess and Star Princess names up until 2020.

What's the difference between bigger and smaller Princess ships?

The biggest Princess cruise ships have room for more onboard venues and attractions than smaller Princess ships. That makes them more alluring for vacationers who prefer a big resort experience with lots of options as compared to a stay at a smaller resort.

On the biggest Princess vessels, the Sphere Class and Royal Class vessels, you'll find the largest piazza-like central atriums in the Princess fleet surrounded by lots of bars and restaurants; multiple entertainment venues for live shows, comedy acts and more; and expansive pool decks with more space for sunning than you'll find on smaller Princess vessels.

You'll also find some only-on-the-Royal-class-ships extras, including, on some of the Royal Class ships, a glass-floored "SeaWalk" that extends over the side of the vessel.

Related: The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Princess ship

Princess' smaller cruise ships also are generally its older cruise ships and lack some of the above features, which are more typical of newer ships. These smaller Princess ships have a more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships, and they hold fewer people.

While Sphere Class and Royal Class ships can hold more than 4,500 passengers with every berth full, the line's smaller vessels (particularly the relatively small Island Princess and Coral Princess) often sail with just 2,000 or so passengers on board.

That makes the smaller Princess ships a good choice for someone who wants to try Princess but isn't eager to travel with huge crowds. The smallest ships in the Princess fleet thus appeal to a subset of Princess fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive to sail on, on a per-day basis.

Related: Don't miss out on these Princess loyalty perks

In addition, because of their size, the smallest ships at Princess Cruises are able to operate itineraries to places that aren't as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of Sun Princess.

If you love to travel then visiting Alaska is likely on your bucket list.

While there are plenty of ways to explore “The Last Frontier,” any experienced traveler will gladly agree that visiting Alaska by cruise is surely the way to go and in some cases, the only way to go. Certain cities, like Sitka, are only accessible by air or sea, which makes a cruise the easiest and most convenient way to travel there.

“Cruising is really the best way to see much of what Alaska has to offer – and you only have to unpack once!” said Kevin M. Grubb, cruise travel specialist of 15-years at Q Cruise + Travel , Virtuoso member agency in Chicago and has also lived in Alaska.

“Alaska is a fantastic destination featuring gorgeous scenery, all types of wildlife, and the chance to view glaciers and fjords,” Grubb told The Post. “Plus, Alaska has the added advantage of being close to home, [with the] same currency, language, etc.”

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to spend a fortune to experience the natural wonders of Alaska. While you certainly can go the luxury route, there are plenty of budget-friendly options available as well. Traveling with a family? Well, pack your bags because there’s kid-friendly cruises available, too.

“There’s literally something for everyone — from the adventurous, to multi-generation families, to solo travelers, on small adventure vessels to mega ships, there is a cruise line to meet the expectations of any traveler,” Grubb said.

Whether you just have time to explore the Inside Passage or want a combination land and sea adventure to explore the Denali National Park, there is an option for all budgets, types of travelers and interests.

In an effort to help you find the perfect Alaskan cruise for you and your family, the New York Post spoke with two travel cruise experts to carefully select the following options. Grubb and Terrie M. Cassidy, owner of Gifted Travel Network , a Virtuoso Agency, who has been in the industry for nearly 50 years.

Ahead find our top selections for Alaskan cruises in 2023 and beyond. Check out our FAQ section at the bottom of the article to get more information on when, what and why to book.

Best for land and sea adventures: Celebrity Cruises Homer Discovery And Heartland Wildlife 13-day Cruise Tour

Alaska

  • Cost: From $3,439 per person
  • Days: 13 days (7 days at sea, 6 on land)
  • Departure port: Anchorage, Alaska, United States
  • End port: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

For the best of both worlds, you’ll want to do a cruise tour which includes both land and sea sites in Alaska. Celebrity Cruises’ Homer Discovery and Heartland Wildlife tour is a great option, that expert Grubb has personally been on.

You’ll arrive in Anchorage on day one and in the morning you’ll enjoy a scenic journey to Talkeetna and make your way to Denali National Park in the afternoon. The next day, enjoy the immersion of Alaska’s natural beauty as you head deeper into the national park on your Tundra Wilderness Tour and keep an eye out for the “Big Five” (caribou, moose, bear, gray wolves and dall sheep). On day four you’ll take a deluxe motor coach to Alyeska (Girdwood) , stop at the quiet farm town of Palmer situated in view of the breathtaking Chugach and Talkeetna Mountain ranges. The next day you’ll experience Homer and Kenai River where some of the largest salmon in the world live and stay the night.

After a week of exploring Alaska by land, you’ll go on a scenic drive to Seward where you’ll join the ship. Experience Seward , Hubbard Glacier , Juneau , Skagway , Icy Strait Point, Ketchikan , the Inside Passage and then end your journey in Vancouver the following morning.

Best for budget-travelers: Norwegian Cruise Line 7-day Cruise, Hubbard Glacier & Skagway

Norwegian Cruise at sea

  • Cost: From $349 per person
  • Days: 7 days
  • Departure port: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
  • End port: Seward, Alaska, United States

Despite what most may think, you don’t need to spend a fortune to experience the beauty of Alaska. Norwegian Cruise Line, for example has many affordable options, starting as low as $349 a night depending on what time of year you decide to book your trip.

On the company’s Hubbard Glacier & Skagway 7-day cruise you’ll depart Seward for some of Alaska’s most scenic destinations. Watch for humpback whales, porpoise and sea lions in the waters surrounding Icy Strait Point . Enjoy a traditional salmon bake in Juneau . Experience the thrill of dog sledding in Skagway . Learn about Alaska’s rich logging history by watching a lumberjack show. Then cruise the Inside Passage to arrive in Vancouver .

Best for off-the-beaten-path travelers: Princess Cruises 13-day Off-The-Beaten-Path Cruise from Vancouver to Anchorage

cruise cabin suite

  • Cost: From $2,118+ per person
  • End port: Anchorage, Alaska, United States

If you’re looking for something a little different on your next trip to Alaska, Grubb recommends this Princess Cruises option.

You’ll experience Ketchikan — Alaska’s “First City” because it’s the first major community travelers come to as they journey north, Juneau where you’ll likely see whales, a glacier garden, the option to dog sled and more. Visit Skagway to immerse yourself in Gold Rush history, cruise through Glacier Bay National Park (Princess is one of the select cruise lines permitted to enter these pristine waters) and experience College Fjord . You’ll visit Whittier , a World War II port for cargo and troops of the Alaska Command before starting the land portion of your trip.

Step off the ship and board a motorcoach for a scenic journey to Copper River , the next day you’ll head toward Denali National Park . Later on, you’ll experience Mt. McKinley and on your last day you’ll spend your evening in a majestic treehouse — designed and built by Pete Nelson of Animal Planet’s Treehouse Masters.

Best for families: Disney Cruise 7-day Alaskan Cruise from Vancouver

Disney cruise

  • Cost: From $1,647+ per person

For those looking to take the whole family on a journey to Alaska and love Disney, you can’t go wrong with this ultra-convenient, all sailing, Disney Cruise that takes you from Stikine Icecap , Ice Strait Point , Juneau and Ketchikan on a 7-day cruise.

This Disney cruise includes broadway-quality shows, fireworks at sea, character experiences, movie screenings, luxury pools, waterslides, kids clubs, incredible restaurants and even babysitters on staff.

Best for luxury travelers: Regent Seven Seas Explorer Seward to Vancouver 7-day Cruise

Alaska

  • Cost: From $4,880 per person
  • Departure port: Seward, Alaska, United States

If you envision yourself sipping on the finest champagne as you cruise by stunning glaciers, consider booking an all-inclusive luxury option like this Regent Seven Seas Cruise. The 750-passenger ship features many gourmet restaurants, all-inclusive beverages, complimentary valet laundry services, free airfare and even included gratuities. Other luxuries include a thermal suite in the five-star spa and fitness center, a luxe casino, afternoon tea and much more. To top it off, if you book a penthouse suite or higher you’ll have your own personal butler, too!

If you can force yourself to get off the boat, you’ll experience Hubbard glacier , Sitka , Skagway , Juneau , Ketchikan , the Inside Passage and Vancouver .

Best for adventurers: Holland America Line 14-Day Great Alaskan Explorer Cruise

dog sledding in Alaska

  • Cost: From $2,099 per person
  • Days: 14 days

Since spending time outdoors is of course, one of the main draws to Alaska, it’s no surprise that there will be adventure seeking travelers looking for a specific type of trip. In that case, if you’re looking to bear-watch on Kodiak Island, hike a glacier, kayak through the frigid water, go dog sledding, go panning for gold or want to take a once-in-a-lifetime panoramic helicopter ride, the opportunities are endless — and Holland American Cruise Line is the place to do it.

Standout destinations on this 14-day cruise include Kodiak , Anchorage , Homer , Valdez , Glacier Bay , Skagway , Sitka and more.

What type of Alaskan cruise do you recommend?

“Most [people] don’t have the time to spend one to two months traveling throughout Alaska (it would take at least that long if not longer to even touch on the highlights) So, a cruise along the Inside Passage , as well as the glaciers, is a must,” Cassidy said. “But they’ll miss out on Alaska’s inland treasures, such as Denali National Park , the opportunity to take a glass-domed train with 360° views, and the chance to see more wildlife.”

A big draw to Alaskan wildlife is The Big Five which is grizzy beasrs, moose, caribou, dall skeep and the grey timbler wolf.

“If time and budget allow, my recommendation is always to do a combined sea and land vacation, also known as a cruise tour .” Cassidy

“A cruise tour is a traveler’s best option when visiting, ” Cassidy said. “Not only do you get to enjoy the gorgeous ports, such as Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay, and Sitka, but when you travel the land portion, you get to enjoy the wildlife and gorgeous scenery that the state has to offer like Denali, Fairbanks, Homer, Artic Circle, Yukon Territory, and more.”

What is the best time to go on an Alaskan cruise?

“The Alaska cruising season is fairly short — basically May through September ,” Grubb said. “July and August tend to be the peak season, to accommodate school vacation schedules and also the best weather. Early or late season travelers may have the opportunity to save a bit on cruise fares.”

It really depends on your preferences and budget.

“I personally like early in the season because you may get the opportunity to see the vegetation bloom and new life emerge,” Cassidy said. “I have been in April (brrr!) and July and loved them both.”

What is the best time to book an Alaskan cruise?

“As a rule, I recommend booking about one year out to get the itinerary you want. You can book closer in, but you may not get the itinerary and tour you want,” Grubb said. “I always tell my clients that the earlier the better.”

The best cruise lines for Alaska (at a glance)

“Each cruise line has a different personality and offers its own unique experience.  A qualified travel advisor will help clients select the right itinerary, line, and ship,” Grubb explained.

  • Holland America Line and Princess Cruises have sailed longer than any other cruise line in Alaska. They have extensive access to Glacier Bay National Park, operate their own lodges and bring part of the Alaska experience onboard.  Holland America offers mid-sized ships and many education and cultural elements, while Princess tends to appeal to a slightly younger demographic and active families. Celebrity Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line are also other contenders in this category.
  • UnCruise Adventures is very much not a typical cruise line, with ships as small as 22 guests, and activities and itineraries that take you to ports and places where large ships can’t go.
  • “Ultra-luxury” lines like Regents Seven Seas Cruise Line , Cunard Cruises , Seabourn Cruises , Viking River Cruises and Silversea Cruises are for travelers who like a glass of champagne and some caviar after exploring. Most lines offer a variety of 7-to-14-day itineraries on ships that range from 300 to 600 guests.

What is one thing you think an Alaskan cruise first-timer should know?

“Don’t try to do everything in one trip – there is never enough time. But if you want to get the most out of your vacation, do the combination of land and sea. Allow at least 10 to 14 days to get the overall vacation,” Cassidy said.

“At minimum, book a room with a balcony . The scenery of Alaska is one of the top reasons people cruise Alaska. Your balcony offers fresh air, floor to ceiling windows, and the opportunity to see more,” Grubb said. “A whale doesn’t wait until you get to the top deck until it breaches! Sitting in the comfort and privacy of your own balcony is the best way to experience it. Better yet, book a suite for more space!”

Alaska set to limit daily number of cruise ship passengers who can visit Juneau

By Megan Cerullo

Edited By Anne Marie Lee

Updated on: June 6, 2024 / 4:59 AM EDT / CBS News

Cruise aficionados looking to experience Alaska's capital, Juneau, may have to vie for permission to disembark and step foot on land, under a new agreement between the city and major cruise lines that sail there.

The agreement between Juneau and Cruise Lines International Association in Alaska (CLIA), finalized last week, seeks to limit the number of daily cruise passengers who can arrive in Juneau to 16,000 on Sundays through Fridays, and to 12,000 on Saturdays, effective in 2026.

The measure intends to limit the congestion and wear and tear tourists can cause a city. Visitors to Juneau skyrocketed to a record 1.6 million last year, after the pandemic depressed numbers for two years. Other popular cities have taken similar measures to limit tourists and their effect on daily life for residents. For example, Venice, Italy, in April became the first city in the world to charge day-trippers a fee just to enter  on peak days.

Alaska's new agreement is designed to cap levels of visitors to roughly where they are now.

"The cruise industry is vital to our local economy, and we need to improve our infrastructure and grow our tour capacity to create a great guest experience and reduce impacts on residents," Juneau Visitor Industry director Alexandra Pierce said in a statement Tuesday. "With this agreement, we are committing to a cap to manage our busiest days and to meet annually to ensure that our visitor numbers remain sustainable."

CLIA, the cruise lines association, applauded the measure, calling the agreement "a well-balanced and thoughtful approach to keeping Juneau a great place to live and visit."

"Ongoing, direct dialogue with local communities is the best way to jointly self-regulate to preserve great resident and visitor experiences while providing a predictable market for the many local businesses that rely on the cruise industry," CLIA said in part in a statement to CBS MoneyWatch.

In Alaska, residents have complained that record numbers of visitors contribute to bad traffic and increase noise pollution when they visit glaciers by helicopter. On the other hand, many local businesses rely on the cruise industry and the steady flow of visitors it provides, the city of Juneau acknowledged in a statement .

Alaska Climate Tourism Tipping Point

Cruise seasons have also been extended from early April to late October, offering year-round residents little reprieve from tourists' presence.

Under a separate agreement, only five large ships are permitted a day during the current cruise season.

Pierce said other projects in the works will also likely diminish the impact tourists have on the city. They include installing a gondola at the city's ski area, updating its downtown sea walk and expanding capacity for visitors at the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area.

City leaders are "trying to balance the needs of our residents, the needs of our economy, the needs of future opportunities for people to stay in our community," she said.

The agreement has its skeptics, though. Cruise industry critic Karla Hart says the new measure isn't sufficient to curb unsustainable levels of tourism. "It feels like we're just getting led along again, and expansion will continue and more time will pass," she said, according to the Associated Press.

Hart is behind a local ballot proposal that would ban ships of at least 250 passengers from stopping in Juneau on Saturdays or on July 4.

ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISE 2024-26 GUIDE

When it comes to planning the ultimate getaway, there are so many reasons why cruise vacations rank among the most popular travel options. First of all, they’re completely stress-free. On a cruise vacation, all the planning is taken care of by the cruise line — from the  destinations  you sail to and the  shore excursions  available at each port, to a full range of  entertainment  and activities happening onboard every day. If you’re not a planner, or if the only things you’re looking to focus on during your getaway is savoring great food, relaxing, and soaking up the sights, cruise vacations are the way to go. A cruise vacation is also a great option if you’re traveling with the whole family, especially when you opt for a Royal Caribbean cruise. All of the ships in this cruise line’s fleet offer family-friendly experiences for guests of all ages. Even little ones will find plenty of ways to play with spaces and activities designed for tots to tweens. One of the top reasons savvy travelers love cruising, though, is because of the incredible value it offers. With Royal Caribbean, your cruise fare includes access to most of the ship’s attractions, select dining venues and all of the entertainment onboard. If you want to make your  experience  even more all-inclusive, you can opt for  beverage  and  specialty dining  packages that cover drinks and dinner at some of the most exclusive restaurants in the fleet. On top of all that, the cruise line presents frequent limited-time offers and seasonal sales, making it easy to score big savings when booking your vacation.

Alaska Cruise Tips: When to Go, What to Pack, How to Choose, and More

  • I’m a seasoned traveler who firmly believes the best way to experience Alaska’s incredible scenery is on an Alaska cruise.
  • Think of an Alaska cruise like a floating hotel that carries you to a breathtaking new destination each day.
  • Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or have lots of shipboard experience, these tips will help you make most of your Alaska cruise vacation.

I’ve cruised all over the world, and I can honestly say there’s no other cruise experience that quite compares to an Alaska cruise. Seeing the untouched landscapes, glacier-dotted shorelines, and bears at play really puts life into perspective—and makes for a truly unforgettable travel experience no matter your age.

Many people choose to make an Alaska cruise their first foray into cruising . First timers are attracted to the state’s majestic beauty, but not necessarily savvy to the bounty that a cruise ship offers. If you’re considering a cruise to America’s Last Frontier, here’s how to make the most of it.

EVERYTHING’S INCLUDED: 7 Best All-Inclusive Cruise Lines in the World

1. You can Save Money by Cruising to Alaska in May, June, and September

The Alaska cruise season is brief. Alaska cruises start each year in May and run through early October. The most popular (and expensive) months to cruise are July and August, coinciding with summer family vacations and translating into ships that are often filled with kids.

If you aren’t tethered to a school-year schedule ( or don’t mind taking your kids out of school ), you may want to consider a shoulder season cruise to Alaska. This translates to sailings in late May, June, or September. On these shoulder season cruises, you’re likely to find lower prices and less crowded cruise ships.

2. Pack for All Four Seasons (and Don’t Forget Binoculars)

Alaska’s climate is notoriously unpredictable. I advise packing warm clothes that are easy to layer on and peel off. Bringing gloves, hats, and a scarf is not unreasonable. On the flip side, Alaska is quite far north, and long summer days offer midnight sun and potentially warm temperatures. Many ships have swimming pools and hot tubs, so don’t forget bathing suits and sunscreen .

A comfortable pair of walking shoes are a must if you want to keep your feet feeling good as you explore each port of call. Binoculars can help you spot a range of animals in their natural habitat. Make sure each person in your group has their own pair so they can spot Alaska’s Big Five land mammals (Black and brown bears, moose, wolves, caribou, and Dall sheep) as well as orcas, puffins, and bald eagles.

3. Shore Excursions Are a Must

As wonderful as shipboard life is, to really experience Alaska you need to disembark at each port of call. Getting off the ship is a great way to get in touch with native Alaskan culture that’s reflected in towering totem poles, hand-woven decorative fabrics, and other native crafts. Alaska cruises offer dozens of shore excursions from whale-watching to dogsledding, many curated with kids and families in mind.

4. How to Choose between The Inside Passage or the Gulf of Alaska

The sheltered waterway known as the Inside Passage is a very popular cruise route. As your ship weaves through a patchwork of islands, with fjords and glaciers thrown in for good measure, you’ll witness wildlife and scenery that looks lifted from a postcard. Alaska cruises taking this route usually make a round-trip journey from either Seattle or Vancouver, cities that have major airports with numerous flight options.

WHERE TO GO: 25 Best Family Vacation Spots in the U.S. for All Ages

The other popular cruise itinerary is the Gulf of Alaska, a stretch of the Pacific Ocean that hugs the southern coast. This equally scenic itinerary is usually a one-way sailing, departing from Seattle or Vancouver and terminating in either Whittier or Seward, Alaska (or vice versa). If you want to add on post- or pre-cruise destinations such as Anchorage and Denali National Park, starting or ending your cruise in Alaska makes it easy to do so.

Keep in mind you will arrive and depart from different cities, requiring the purchase of a multi-city airline ticket (unless you live within driving distance from Seattle or Vancouver), which can be quite costly.

5. Utilize the Onboard Naturalist

Booking an Alaska cruise cruise that has an onboard naturalist is a no-brainer. On my recent Princess cruise to Alaska, our Canadian naturalist went above and beyond his job’s description, spending each evening on deck 16 hanging out with passengers, helping us spot humpback whales and see the Northern Lights until well past midnight.

Small ship cruise lines such as  Lindblad Expeditions, which partners with National Geographic , offer families a deep dive into the natural world with the expertise of naturalists who cater to curious kids as they learn environmental stewardship.

If your ship takes you to Glacier Bay National Park, park rangers are usually brought on board as the ship cruises through the park, helping you to better understand the fragile beauty surrounding you.

6. Spring for an Exterior Stateroom

While interior cabins will save you money, Alaska’s eye-candy beauty and abundance of wildlife merit the added expense of an exterior stateroom (with a balcony if available). From the moment you wake up, you’ll be treated to spellbinding scenery at all hours.

7. Don’t Skip the Buffet

While many large and mid-size cruise ships promote their specialty restaurants, these dining options usually incur an extra fee, which can quickly add up when you’re booking a table for your entire family. The ship’s buffet is a low-stakes, no-additional-cost way for kids to sample global cuisine. If crowds are a deterrent, hit the buffet a bit early or late, when lines tend to be thinner.

MAKE MEMORIES: 50 Family Vacation Ideas for the Best Trip Ever

On my family’s recent Alaska cruise, we were thrilled with the smorgasbord of edible delights from across the world. We couldn’t get enough of the authentic Indian food, feasting on tandoori chicken and fragrant curries served with refreshing raitas and savory chutneys. The Chinese food section let us customize our stir-fry with veggies and proteins of our choice, including tofu, perfect for my vegetarian daughter.

8. Be Prepared for Some Seasickness

The Inside Passage is sheltered, equaling waters that are usually quite calm. However, if your itinerary crosses the Gulf of Alaska, the sea tends to be rougher. Whichever route your ship takes, being prepared with seasickness remedies is essential. I don’t suffer from sea sickness but my daughter uses Sea-Band acupressure wristbands with good results.

9. Take Advantage of Onboard Activities

Most large and mid-size cruise ships sailing Alaska itineraries have age-appropriate supervised clubs for kids and teens at no additional cost. These programs give young passengers the opportunity to spend time with their peers and try new activities, freeing parents to enjoy a bit of adult time.

BRING THE KIDS: 7 Great Cruise Lines for Families (and Their 12 Most Kid-Friendly Ships)

Cruise ships offer a range of ways for families to spend time together. Try a game of pickleball on all Holland America ships or enjoy a ride on the bumper cars at Royal Caribbean’s SeaPlex, the largest indoor activity complex at sea. Evening entertainment, including Broadway-style musical performances on Disney cruises, is always a highlight as well.

10. Discounts for Kids Are Real and Significant

Keep an eye out for periodic kids sail free deals where children ages 18 and under can sail for no charge beyond taxes, fees, and port expenses. These promotions make a family vacation more affordable. Holland America is one cruise line that offers these bargains frequently on Alaska cruises, while small ships such as Lindblad and UnCruise always offer a $500 discount for children.
