Laguna de Manialtepec is one of the  best things to do in Puerto Escondido and to experience it properly you’ll want to explore the lagoon by boat or kayak which means you will need to organize a tour.

Laguna Manialtepec is located approximately 18 kilometers 20 minutes West of Puerto Escondido.

Laguna Manialtepec Bioluminescence

Laguna Manialtepec connects with the ocean and this leads to bioluminescent organisms entering the lagoon which lights up when agitated.

This Puerto Escondido Bioluminescence attracts tourists and scientists that enjoy swimming with it and studying with it respectively.

In addition to the bioluminescence phenomenon, Manialtepec Lagoon is home to over 60% of the bird species that can be found in Mexico.

From the likes of parrots, ospreys, falcons, herons, and many more the lagoon is the perfect place to spot them in their natural habitat.

Hearing and seeing them up close is a relaxing and tranquil experience especially when the sun is setting.

As it gets later into the evening there are also a number of boats doing the bioluminescent tours which allow you to see dinoflagellate plankton light the water blue when disturbed.

Laguna de Manialtepec is home to a lot of crocodiles however tours still operate at night to see the bioluminescence so it is important that you choose the company carefully with an experienced local guide.

The crocodiles of Laguna de Manialtepec are normally territorial and avoid humans wherever possible.

Why can this intense blue be observed?

Bioluminescence is a fascinating occurrence found in living organisms like bacteria, fungi, insects, crustaceans, mollusks, and fish, with fireflies being perhaps the most recognized example.

The emission of light serves diverse purposes, including communication, reproduction, defense, and attracting prey.

Millions of dinoflagellates, a species of phytoplankton originating from the sea, inhabit the Manialtepec Lagoon, reproducing in these waters.

Their luminosity results from a chemical reaction employed as a defense mechanism against predators.

What additional points of interest does this lagoon offer?

For bird enthusiasts, this location is a haven. Mangroves and the overall tropical ecosystem attract a diverse range of species, from herons and iguanas to ibises, ducks, and parrots.

During the early morning, it’s typical to spot photographers equipped with telephoto lenses, poised to capture these creatures in motion.

Don’t forget to bring mosquito repellent and a towel. Leave your cell phone and cameras behind as capturing this natural phenomenon demands specialized equipment.

What type of birds can you see at Laguna Manialtepec?

The lagoon is home to a large number of birds, including migratory, permanent residents, and temporary residents. Some of them travel from Canada to spend the winter in the lagoon.

  • Fulica americana
  • Gray Pelican
  • Tiger Heron (Tigrisoma mexicanum)
  • Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias)
  • Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis)
  • Rufescent Tiger Heron (Egretta rufescens)
  • Green Heron (Butorides virescens)

Laguna de Manialtepec Tours

There are a number of different laguna de Manialtepec tours that operate all year round however our personal favorite is the birdwatching tour .

They operate two times a day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon however if you want the best experience we’d highly recommend the morning tour.

Although there are bioluminescence tours that operate in Manialtepec we normally recommend the Chacahua bioluminescence tour as there is usually more bioluminescence present in the area.

There are often other tours that run in Laguna de Manialtepec such as paddleboarding but as of 2023, they aren’t currently operating as tourists normally prefer the birdwatching tours.

Laguna de Manialtepec Guide Summary

Laguna de Manialtepec is a stunning lagoon and we would highly recommend visiting here while you’re in Puerto Escondido.

The wide range of wildlife and flora and fauna makes for a truly rewarding experience and there are a number of different companies that will take you to experience the lagoon.

Although in theory, you could visit the lagoon on your own we would highly recommend visiting with a certified tour operator such as the ones that we have linked within this guide.

What is bioluminescence?

Bioluminescence is light produced by means of a chemical reaction inside a living organism. There are different kinds of bioluminescent organisms, but most live in the ocean.

laguna de manialtepec tours

Bioluminescent organisms include fish, bacteria, jellyfish, fireflies, and certain kinds of fungi.

The bioluminescence in Puerto Escondido is caused by dinoflagellates . These are a type of plankton that can produce their own luciferin, which is a light-producing chemical.

Dinoflagellate ecosystems are quite rare because they typically only form in a warm bio lagoon that is connected to the ocean via a narrow opening.

When can you see bioluminescence in Puerto Escondido?

There is no precisely defined bioluminescence Puerto Escondido season. It is possible to see dinoflagellates putting on their show of light during the entire year.

However, it is generally best to go when the skies are dark and there is a New Moon (i.e., when we see no moon).

🌙 Pro Tip: Don’t plan a trip to see bioluminescence in Puerto Escondido on a full moon.

If possible, plan your trip to see the bioluminescent planktons sometime between July and December. Choose a night when the moon phase is in your favor, as the inky darkness will make the glittering water even more spectacular.

What month is best to watch bioluminescent water?

If you’re wondering when is the best Puerto Escondido bioluminescence time of year, the answer is September .

But don’t go on any night in September. Instead, choose a night where there is a New Moon (NOT a full moon) or dark skies (when the moon rises late). These dark conditions will make it easier to see the phosphorescent plankton.

Of course, if you can’t go in September, don’t worry! You can see bioluminescence in Puerto Escondido year round.

What time of day is best to see bioluminescence?

It is best to see bioluminescence after dark. The darker the night, the better. If possible, choose a night when the moon phase is in your favor. The best time is during the New Moon.

A New Moon is optimal since the night will be darker, and you’ll be able to see the glowing plankton better. Bioluminescence is not visible during daylight hours.

✨ Pro Tip: If you don’t have the flexibility to choose a night with a New Moon, you can still see the bioluminescence. Your Puerto Escondido guide will know of places in the lagoons where trees shade the water.

What do you wear to a bioluminescence tour?

For the best experience on your bioluminescence tour, consider wearing light and breathable clothing with long sleeves.

This will protect you from the sun (if your tour starts in the daytime or is a full-day tour) and from insect bites. If your tour includes walking or horseback riding, wear close-toed shoes with sturdy soles.

For the boat ride, wear a bathing suit and sandals or water shoes. Take along a towel, this water bottle , and snacks.

It can also be helpful to take along a waterproof camera or phone case, a waterproof flashlight, insect repellant , and cash for tips.

Your driver will stop in Zicatela in Puerto Escondido, for you to enjoy a drink and wait for the sunset, then he will keep driving to Manialtepec. You will take a small boat and go into the lagoon water.

Laguna de Manialtepec

Puerto Escondido

The 6km-long Manialtepec Lagoon, beginning 14km west of Puerto Escondido along Hwy 200, is an essential spot for bird enthusiasts and a fascinating place for anyone interested in nature. Ibises, roseate spoonbills, parrots, pelicans, falcons, ospreys, herons, kingfishers and several types of hawk and iguana call Manialtepec home for at least part of the year. The best bird-watching months are December to March, and the best time of day is soon after dawn.

The lagoon is mainly surrounded by mangroves, but tropical flowers and palms accent the ocean side, and the channel at the west end winds through to a pristine sandbar beach.

Several operators run three-hour bird-watching trips in motorized lanchas (outboard boats), with English-speaking guides, binoculars and round-trip transportation from your accommodations in Puerto Escondido. Manialtepec is also a bioluminescent bay where phosphorescent plankton appear for a few nights several times a year. At these times nocturnal boat trips are offered, and you can swim or trail your hand in the water to activate the strange phosphorescent glow. July, August, November and December are often good months for this. Don't bother going when there's a full moon or after heavy rain.

From Puerto Escondido, take a taxi colectivo (shared taxi) bound for San José Manialtepec from Av 4 Poniente (M$20 to La Puesta del Sol , 15 minutes), running from about 6am to 8pm, or a Río Grande–bound minibus (M$25) from Av Hidalgo 5, leaving about every 30 minutes from 4am to 9pm.
