U.S. News Insider Tip: Fuel your day of sightseeing with strong, sweet espresso from Cuban Coffee Queen. There are multiple locations near or along Duval Street, including the original truck by the waterfront. A visit to Key West isn't complete without taking a stroll down Duval Street. Lined with restaurants, bars, art galleries and souvenir shops, this popular thoroughfare stretches a little more than a mile and is near many of the city's most well-known attractions. Mallory Square Mallory Square free

U.S. News Insider Tip: A Mallory Square sunset is a must during your trip, but don't miss out on sunset views at dinner, too. Plan ahead and book a table at a waterfront restaurant like nearby Hot Tin Roof or Latitudes . These reservations can fill up months in advance. - Lyssa Goldberg

For a great view of the Key West sunset, head to Mallory Square at the northwest tip of the island. During the Sunset Celebration (a free, nightly arts festival that starts about two hours before sunset), this is one of the best spots on the island to catch the sun's last moments and revel in the end of the day. But because it's one of the best vantage points for watching a sunset, it's also extremely crowded, especially with cruise passengers when ships are in port.

U.S. News Insider Tip: While you're here, laugh to yourself about the self-proclaimed southernmost everything, from the historic Southernmost House mansion and Southernmost Beach Cafe to the Southernmost Grocery Store & Deli and Southernmost Trolley Stop gift shop. - Lyssa Goldberg

One of the most popular things to do in Key West is to snap a photo with the colorful buoy marking the southernmost point of the United States. Sitting at the intersection of Whitehead and South streets, the striped buoy is just 90 miles north of Cuba. Next to it, you'll find a plaque dedicated to Cubans who have lost their lives trying to reach America, and a plaque detailing the history of the Black community on the Southernmost Point.

U.S. News Insider Tip: Combine this stop with the Key West Lighthouse across the street. Then, visit nearby Blue Heaven in the quirky, colorful Bahama Village neighborhood for the best backyard vibes (and Key lime pie) in town. - Lyssa Goldberg

Literary icon and journalist Ernest Hemingway is one of Key West's best-known and well-loved "freshwater Conchs" (a resident who was not born on the island). His former home – which he lived in for less than 10 years, but owned until his death in 1961 – is located in Old Town and is now a U.S. National Historic Landmark. Literature buffs take note: Hemingway penned parts of some of his most famous works, including "A Farewell to Arms" and "For Whom the Bell Tolls," in this very residence. The grand house itself is interesting, as it was one of the first in Key West to have indoor plumbing and a pool. Inside, the rooms contain memorabilia about Hemingway's life and work.

Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park

For the cleanest beach and best waters in Key West, you should head for the westernmost point of the island to Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park. There, you can sunbathe, hike, bike, fish and get a dose of history all in one place. Recent visitors noted the clear waters, making it an ideal snorkeling spot, but travelers also warn that the sand is not soft and that beach shoes are needed to traverse the rocky terrain safely. While the beach might not be as powdery soft as some other Florida beaches , it does offer some great snorkeling opportunities, according to recent visitors. You can either bring your own or rent equipment on-site. Along with your water gear, pack some food and charcoal: This beach has plenty of barbecue grills.

If you get tired of hanging out beachside, stop by the historic fort located within the park. The fort was built in the mid-1800s and was used during the Civil War and the Spanish-American War. Daily guided tours are available at 11 a.m. or you can follow the self-guided tour.

Take a Key West boat tour Take a Key West boat tour

When you're not admiring the waters that surround Key West from the beach, enjoy them from the deck of a boat. Several companies offer sailing, snorkeling and kayaking tours, not to mention sunset cruises and fishing charters .  Danger Charters , Classic Harbor Line  and  Sebago Key West  all receive favorable reviews from recent travelers. There are also several tours designed exclusively for dolphin watching (the Florida Keys are home to bottlenose dolphins year-round, along with six other dolphin species that pass through the area) – Wild About Dolphins and Honest Eco  are among the most popular, according to recent travelers.

If you sign up for a  snorkeling tour , you'll likely sail to the Florida Keys Reef – the only living coral barrier reef in North America. Located approximately 6 miles off the coast of Key West, the reef has shallow waters ideal for beginners. Travelers can also sign up for kayaking tours and paddle through the uninhabited mangrove islands in the Key West National Wildlife Refuge.

Smathers Beach Smathers Beach free

Key West isn't known for its beaches. However, the largest and most bustling one on this island is Smathers Beach, which is particularly popular during spring break. Recent travelers say the beach is clean with calm waters, plenty of shade under the palms and amenities, including bathrooms, food trucks, and chair and umbrella rentals. Visitors also say the views are great and praise the beach's soft white sand. In recent months, several visitors noted an abundance of sargassum (smelly seaweed).

You'll find Smathers Beach on the southern shore of the island, stretching half a mile along the Atlantic Ocean and State Road A1A. It's close to the airport, which can be a pro if you enjoy watching the planes take off and land, or a con if you're not a fan of the noise.

Harry S. Truman Little White House Harry S. Truman Little White House

Originally built by the U.S. Navy in 1890, the Little White House served as naval command headquarters during the Spanish-American War, and also played roles in both World Wars and the Cold War. From 1946 through 1952, President Harry Truman used this house as his winter vacation home and because he spent 175 days of his presidency here, it became known as the Little White House. The name is fitting: Since Truman's days, many other presidents have also vacationed here, including Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. Today, the Little White House has been restored and turned into a museum. Exhibits document Key West's role in naval conflicts, as well as the house's history – the Marshall Plan and Truman Doctrine were both discussed here.

Recent travelers highly recommend a visit to the Little White House, especially for self-identified history buffs. The guides and exhibits both earn high marks from reviewers. The only gripe among recent visitors concerned the admission cost, which some felt was too high for a one-hour experience.

Key West Lighthouse & Keeper's Quarters Museum Key West Lighthouse & Keeper's Quarters Museum

If you can fend off the claustrophobia and don't mind heights, the climb up the tiny and constricting 88 spiral steps to the top of the Key West Lighthouse is worth it for the views, say recent visitors. Once you're up there though, be patient: According to past travelers, the viewing balcony at the top is very narrow. After taking in the views, take a look around the keeper's quarters, which have been around since 1887. The cozy house is now a museum that surveys the history of lighthouses in the Keys, with photographs and various artifacts. The gift shop is also a great place to find regional art.

One ticket gets you access to both the lighthouse and the museum. Admission for adults costs $17; kids ages 7 to 18 get in for $9, while children younger than 7 can enter for free. Discounts are available when you purchase your tickets online. Visitors are divided on whether the admission price is worth the local history provided in the museum, but most agree that the panoramic views seen from the top of the lighthouse are unbeatable. The lighthouse and museum are open daily (except Christmas) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Situated across the street from the  Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum , you can easily visit both sites in one day. Reviewers say there is some street parking, but most recommend walking in from town.

Audubon House & Tropical Gardens Audubon House & Tropical Gardens

Whether you're interested in colonial furniture, period architecture, tropical greenery or artist and naturalist John James Audubon, you'll find a host of curiosities at the Audubon House & Tropical Gardens. Located in Old Town a block away from Duval Street , the Audubon House & Tropical Gardens dates back to the 1840s. The house was built by Captain John Huling Geiger, but it's named after well-known ornithologist John James Audubon, who visited the Keys in 1832. Twenty-eight of his works can be found in the house. While you're here, take a look at the house's decor and then head outside to the lush and colorful garden, which includes orchids, bromeliads and other tropical plants. For some, the garden was their favorite part of the house, noting that the vibrantly colored flowers make for prime photography subjects. Other reviewers remarked on the careful restoration of the house and its period-specific antiques.

When you walk into the house, you'll be greeted by a staff member who will offer a brief introduction. Many visitors remark on how friendly and knowledgeable the docents are. From there, you can embark on your own self-guided tour. The Audubon House is open every day from 9:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Admission for adults costs $15; students (of any age) pay $10; tickets for kids ages 6 to 12 cost $5; children younger than 6 get in for free. Key West Aquarium Key West Aquarium

The Key West Aquarium is proof that good things come in small packages. More small-scale than your typical aquarium, this indoor-outdoor attraction is a historic facility that first opened in 1935. Although it might be lacking in elaborate exhibits, this one-story aquarium still has a good range of creatures for the entire family to see. Take your kids to the touch pools to see if a sea cucumber is as slimy as it looks. The museum also hosts several tours and presentations throughout the day. If you're lucky, you may get to feed a gentle nurse shark if you attend the shark presentation.

The aquarium is home to several rescued sea turtles that are native to Florida waters.

Higgs Beach Higgs Beach free

Located on the south side of the island along the Atlantic Ocean, Clarence S. Higgs Memorial Beach Park encompasses 16.5 acres of oceanfront, two piers (one on each end), a Civil War-era fort and the site of what's believed to be the only known African refugee cemetery in the U.S. Beachgoers can enjoy a day of swimming, snorkeling, kayaking or paddle boarding in the ocean, plus land activities ranging from sunbathing to beach volleyball, tennis and pickleball.

Higgs Beach is known for its fine, white sand and shallow water, making it an ideal beach for families with small children. However, when you first enter the water, the sand can be rocky, recent travelers warn, so bring water shoes. You can avoid the rocks entirely by walking down the Reynolds Street Pier past the rocky shore to a ladder, where you can step down into the water. Beach chairs and umbrella rentals are available, or you can set up shop at one of several tiki huts, permanent wooden umbrellas, or picnic tables with barbecues. The park also offers visitors a bike path, a children's playground, a dog park, plus public restrooms and showers.

Key West Cemetery Key West Cemetery free

U.S. News Insider Tip: For more of the macabre, take an evening Ghosts & Gravestones tour to learn about the spooky tales of other Key West sites, where you'll meet the legendary (but haunted) Robert the Doll. – Lyssa Goldberg

Located in Old Town, the Key West Cemetery has been around since 1847 and is well worth at least a walk-through. The quirkiness of the city's residents extends even to the grave. Tombstones in this 19-acre cemetery don't bear the typical inscriptions. Instead, you'll find epitaphs that reflect the island's casual lifestyle. Some of the more well-known inscriptions include "I told you I was sick" and "I'm just resting my eyes." One tombstone for a captain is actually topped with a ship's mast. Notable Conchs buried here include Ellen Mallory, whose name you'll recognize from Mallory Square ; William Curry, Florida's first millionaire; and "Sloppy" Joe Russell, who was Ernest Hemingway's fishing guide and a bartender at the famed Sloppy Joe's bar on Duval Street .

Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center free

With more than 6,000 square feet of interactive exhibits, the Florida Keys Eco-Discovery center seeks to inspire visitors to preserve the marine ecosystems of the Florida Keys and enjoy this natural resource responsibly. Here, guests can learn about the native plants and animals of the Florida Keys through exhibits highlighting the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, four national wildlife refuges and three national parks, including Dry Tortugas, which is on an island about 70 miles from Key West.

Visitors can watch a 20-minute movie about the Keys' fragile ecosystems and then explore the center on a self-paced tour. Staff and volunteers are also on-site to answer questions. Notable exhibits include a replica of NOAA's Aquarius, the only underwater ocean laboratory in the world, and a spotlight on the long maritime history of shipwrecks inside the sanctuary's waters. After completing renovations in late 2022, there are even more hands-on activities, such as a mangrove exhibit where guests can play animal noises and guess which animal made the sound, an area with microscopes so you can watch coral close-up, and a paddleboard photo-op that looks like you’re paddling through the mangroves. The center has been certified by KultureCity as a sensory inclusive facility for people with sensory sensitivities; it offers a separate room where people can take a break from the exhibits. He used only the finest wood and the best carpenters to construct the beautiful home for his family. The quality and workmanship can be seen today as the home still stands although it has gone through restoration over the years.

Part of the home is also a gallery with beautiful pieces of artwork by John Audubon and the gardens which span an acre around the home. With many orchids, bromeliads, and rare tropical palms, the lush garden is a delight to walk through. The pathways lead throughout the tropical garden and past the cook house which depicts how the outdoor kitchen would have been used back then.

The home is open Monday through Sunday 9:30a.m.-4:15p.m. with adult tickets costing $15.

The Perfect 4 Day Key West Itinerary

We spent an amazing 4 days in Key West. Well, any time in Key West is amazing, right? The Kimpton Key West hosted us for a fun time. We explored all of their properties and tried a few new places for dinner. Along the way, I learned a few things I thought I would share about our Key West itinerary.

First off, let’s talk about planning an itinerary… do it, but don’t overdo it. Leave space in the day for random stuff. You are on vacation, after all, not every second of every day needs to be planned. Plan for an island time experience.

Below are affiliate links, which means we will earn a small commission at no extra charge to you. As always, thanks for your support.

Getting to Key West

key west airport arrival terminal

How do you get to Key West? There are really three ways… by car, by plane and by ferry.

A lot of airlines now offer direct flights into Key West. Or, you can fly into Miami International Airport and experience the Key West Road trip. If you have never done this, I would plan it at least once. Plan to make stops along the way. Check out the Everglades National Park, Key Largo, and other cool spots along the overseas highway. Did you know there are 11 National Parks in Florida? Two can be found in the Keys (the Everglades and the Dry Tortugas)

The Ultimate Road Trip from Miami to Key West

Along the Overseas Highway, you will notice everything is marked by mileage, with Mile Marker Zero being in Key West.

Rather take a ferry? Check out the Key West Express.

So… with the ground rules set… let’s see how to explore Key West, enjoy some downtime, AND have an amazing time in just 4 days.

The Beginning

Ok.. we planned this on purpose, we arrived very early in Key West. This meant we traveled with very little sleep, but that’s ok.

Side note, I booked our plane tickets directly with the airline. So, they set the schedule, departure/arrivals, and time for the layover. BUT, their itinerary only allowed for 25 minutes from touchdown to take off on our layover down. Might work, if you aren’t 10 minutes late leaving …. but, we managed to make the connecting flight, so all good. But, next time, I will ensure we have plenty of time between connections.

kevin and michele on an airplane

We always travel with carry-on only. It just makes the trip that much easier. Plus, for 4 days… you really don’t need that much stuff. Once we land it’s straight to the hotel. For this visit, we headed to Winslow’s Bungalows. This Kimpton property is just amazing.

Winslow’s Bungalows

Located at 725 Truman Ave, you are fairly close to everything. If you get tired of walking you can always take an Uber or the free Duval Loop bus. If you are taking a cab from the airport to the hotel, you may want to let them know it’s the Kimpton on Truman instead of Winslow’s Bungalows. The reason is these properties used to be part of the Historic Key West Inns, but now are part of the Kimpton family.

This property used to be the Chelsea House and Key Lime Inn. Kimpton has combined them into one property now known as Winslow’s Bungalows.

king bedroom at the kimpton inn key west

Here’s a bit of quick history about the property…..

  • It’s named after the famous painter and summer Key West resident Winslow Homer
  • Has 3 pools, an outdoor bar, and vibrant gardens
  • 85 guestrooms including 2 deluxe suites and is Kimpton’s largest Key West hotel
  • The room designs pay homage to the property’s past owners including an Army officer, an Irish steamboat Captain, and a circus performer
  • On the property is Maloney House, where the first mayor of Key West lived. He planted an amazing fruit grove that is still used by the hotel today.
  • The property has 3 stand-alone bungalows to accommodate guests wanting a bit more privacy
  • The property is very pet friendly. They offer Henry’s dog treats to their dog guests
  • If you want to try the famous Key West bagel made by Goldman’s, they are offered at breakfast (they are very very yummy)
  • Music is played at the pool bar
  • The old Blue Parrot Inn is across the street and is now part of this property. They have 11 rooms and their pool is called the serenity pool because they don’t play music and it offers a zen tranquil feeling

key west trip ideas

They didn’t have our room ready yet, remember we arrived early (before checkout). But, that was ok. They held our luggage so we could head off to have breakfast and a much needed cocktail to start the vacation off. Our breakfast of choice? Blue Heaven of course.

After breakfast, it was time to head back to the hotel and enjoy a bit of pool time. Best way to cool off and refresh after a day of traveling.

As you can see, our room was, perfect. Winslow’s Bungalows offers great spaces to relax and enjoy Key West. Not too far from the heart of Duval Street, this place offers three pools and an amazing pool bar.

Fully refreshed, we head out to explore. First stop… the Mile Zero sign. No vacation in Key West is complete without a picture in front of the Mile Zero sign.

Needing a place to cool off, we then headed over to the Custom House. This place offers rotating exhibits all about Key West and those who influenced Key West. Always a great stop. Some the coolest and best things can be found in their gift shop.

Now, it’s time for dinner. A favorite stop of ours is Sloppy Joe’s. I know, I know, it can be a bit touristy, but I still love this place. The food is always good, the drinks are poured strong and they offer live music. Who could ask for more?

Speaking of live music, plan a stop at the Smokin’ Tuna, one of the best places in Key West for music. They have an outdoor courtyard that offers shade and cold adult beverages.

Most of the time I suggest sunset celebration at Mallory Square, but this night, we opted for a different perspective. Sunset from the top of Schooner Wharf. This is the perfect place to see the harbor, enjoy a cold beverage and listen to live music.

drinks at blue heaven key west

Today, hubby heads off to enjoy a morning out on the water fishing. Me… well, I do what I love to do while in Key West, I head out for a morning walk. Who doesn’t love a morning walk around Key West? I love to look at the historic homes that are scattered all over this small island. It’s one of the great things about the Island, they have kept the charm and preserved its history.

Historic Walking Tour

When I get back, it’s time for breakfast. I head down this wandering path at Winslow’s and partake in their complimentary breakfast. It’s a basic continental breakfast. It’s served in the bar area. Enjoying my second (and maybe third) cup of coffee, I did a bit of work. Caught up on a few emails, and, worked on this blog post. At the bar, is a great spot to work. I don’t spend too much time working… after all, there is a lot more to see and do before Kevin returns from his fishing trip.

Kevin returned after a successful fishing trip, and we then set out for the next adventure. Kimpton Hotels hosted us for a tour of their Lighthouse property. This place is very cool Across the street from the Hemingway House, it offers a great view of the lighthouse and they have a very nice bar.

Not staying at the Lighthouse? No worries, the bar is open to the public, Plan to stop in and enjoy this place. The bartender is engaging and can mix many amazing cocktails. We had the best time trying the house specialties. We actually couldn’t decide which ones we liked best. It’s ok to like them all, right?

While in Key West, it seems to always be cocktail time. With that in mind, we had time before our dinner reservations and headed over to General Horseplay. This place is known for their cocktails and fun Happy Hour. It’s a great place to start off an evening.

For dinner… we were hosted by Poke in the Rear. Don’t overlook this place. It was, one of the best dinners we had while on Island.

sidewalk in key west with cat paw prints

Today we have a quick bite of breakfast and then head out to explore the streets of Key West. Being married to a photographer, I spend a lot of time wandering around. But, I wouldn’t have it any other way. We saw roosters, flowers, palm trees, and stickers. All my favorites.

Grabbed a cold brew from Cuban Coffee Queen and walked around the Historic Seaport.

Heard the band starting to play at Sunset Pier… which means we are stopping to listen and enjoy a cold beverage. Here’s where I would insert the idea of having free time built into your Key West itinerary. If you “had” to be somewhere … you might miss out on an awesome view, cold beverages, and amazing live music.

A few more stops for pictures and then we are heading back to Winslow’s Bungalows. Not only do they have a great pool bar and pool area, but they offered a free tasting of Mutiny rum. It was yummy and the story was just as interesting.

We didn’t have any dinner plans to speak of so we “thought” we would head over to Mallory Square and enjoy sunset and then play it by ear. I think that’s a great way to spend any evening in Key West, at least one night. No particular plans and let the evening unfold.

Well, as we walked by Little Pearl and saw they had two chairs open at the bar… and we hopped on the chance to eat at Little Pearl. This place offers a tasting style menu and is worth every penny if you can get a reservation.

We have a later flight, also planned on purpose, which gives us almost a full day to play in Key West. What is always fun to see is the “guest” ships that dock at Mallory Square. On this day we were able to see the USCGC Eagle. This 295-foot, three-masted barque is used as a training vessel for future officers of the United States Coast Guard. This is also known as “America’s Tall Ship” and is the largest tall ship flying the Stars and Stripes and the only active square-rigger in US service. Very, very cool to see in Key West.

Then it was off to lunch at First Flight. This is the Southernmost microbrewery and they offer a great courtyard seating area and a wonderful menu.

Afterward, we head off to the airport to head home. As per usual, we grab a last vacation cocktail and share a frozen Key Lime pie on a stick (dipped in chocolate).

We tried new places for food and drinks and had plenty of down time to relax. That’s what makes the perfect vacation… a perfect balance.

I get it, we didn’t do much on this trip. But, we had a really good time. If this seems a bit too slow for you, then check out these ideas:

  • Take a guided tour – a food tour, a walking tour, a ghost tour ( see our recommendations here )
  • Take the ferry (or seaplane ) out to the Dry Tortugas National Park – be sure to book this one in advance as it sells out quickly.
  • Head out on the water to snorkel the coral reefs
  • Go up the Keys for a day trip and see Bahia Honda State Park, sea turtles, or the Key Deer on Big Pine Key.
  • 3 Reasons Smathers Beach is the best
  • Visit one of the 18 museums on the island… like the Truman Little White House

No weekend in Key West is complete without a trip to Dry Tortugas. It is a great spot for snorkeling and scuba diving around the National Park. Less than 1% of the National Park is on dry ground, making the Dry Tortugas an underwater paradise!

With crystal clear water, gorgeous coral some rising 50ft high, it is truly spectacular! There are fish species here that don’t exist anywhere else in the world. Keep an eye out for  sea turtles as the island is named after the Spanish word for turtles!

The popular spots to go, scuba dive, include the Maze, the Bat Caves, Dante’s Inferno, Texas Rock, and the Windjammer Wreck one of the most beautiful shipwrecks in the world.

The Ultimate Itinerary for a Day Trip to Key West

I tend to think that after spending an entire summer living and working in Key West that I should be able to curate the perfect day trip to Key West… and that’s just what I’ve done for you. When I lived and worked on the island I spent each day off exploring as much of Key West as possible and eating as much awesome Key West food as possible. You can read my ultimate Key West bucketlist with seriously almost every single cool thing there is to do on the island (almost 100 things!). However, if you are looking for what to do in Key West for a day, I am here to give you (from all of my experience and research) the perfect one-day itinerary!

Best Time of Year to Spend a Day Key West

One of the magical things about visiting Key West is that you can basically go any time of year and have a great experience. That being said, there are a few things to note about the weather and potential crowds at different times of year in the Florida Keys.

Spring and fall generally are the best times to visit Key West for the most moderate weather. You can expect temperatures to be in the 80s F and you will find fewer crowds than in winter. Speaking of winter, you can expect the most crowds in winter and temperatures to drop to the mid-70s F with lows around 65° F.

In the summer you can expect high humidity and temperatures in the 90s F. Speaking from experience, this definitely feels quite toasty. However, if you are willing to bear the heat, you will be rewarded with less crowds (and possibly a little bit or a lot a bit of seaweed along the beaches depending on the year). Hurricane season generally runs from June-November with higher chances of hurricanes forming towards the latter end of that period.

Obviously, hurricanes don’t pass through the Florida Keys every year, but it’s something to be aware of when planning your ideal Florida Keys itinerary. As I said, I have experience with being in Key West for an entire summer, however, I also returned with my husband on a  Florida road trip  end of October/early November and the weather was perfect and it really felt like the perfect time to visit (minus the fact that a hurricane had come through that summer leaving a few things in shambles 😬 but we were happy to support Key West during a hard time).

Key West Day Trip In-Depth Itinerary

1. breakfast or brunch at blue heaven.

You have probably seen other sites recommend Blue Heaven for a meal and it is definitely for good reason. Eating breakfast or brunch at Blue Heaven is one of my top recommendations for things to do in Key West. Thankfully, breakfast is served until 2:00 pm, so even if you are running late you can most likely catch breakfast!

Blue Heaven is such a cute eatery and it’s a local hotspot. Unfortunately, reservations aren’t available, but when you arrive, be sure to ask for a seat outside in their relaxed open-air area. It really is my favorite place to sit and eat. If you’re lucky, you’ll get to hear some live music and watch the infamous Key West chickens roaming the patio.

I recommend ‘Richard’s Very Good Pancakes’ which are huuuge pancakes with chunks of either banana, pineapple, pecans, or blueberries within! If you are feeling up for some Key Lime Pie, Blue Heaven has one of the most unique pies in Key West with a crazy high topping of meringue.

2. snorkeling at fort zachary taylor state park.

Fort Zachary Taylor beach is the ultimate hidden gem of Key West. When I worked in Key West for a summer I quickly learned the locals call it Fort Zach and that it’s one of their favorite spots on the island to visit. I returned to Key West with my husband a few years back and even though we only had about 1.5 days on the island, we made sure to snorkel at Fort Zach.

Snorkeling at Fort Zachary Taylor is one of the best things to do during a day trip to Key West

Key West has a lot of beaches, but only one of them is good for snorkeling, and that’s the beach at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park. The only other option for snorkeling (which is also a great option) is to take an excursion to snorkel at the Florida Reef a few miles offshore. However, if you want to stay on the island, Fort Zach beach is amazing.

Rocky jetty going into blue water in Key West Florida

The beach has two rocky jetties home to many colorful fish plus the water is a lovely blue/green color. You can rent snorkel gear, seats and umbrellas from a stand on the sand and even grab a snack from Cayo Hueso Cafe if you get hungry.

If you have more time, you can also take a self-guided tour of a Civil War Era Fort at the state park and wander the pretty walking trails in the area. Check out my 10 Best Things to do at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park post to learn more!

3. lunch at cuban coffee queen.

If you aren’t totally still stuffed from breakfast at Blue Heaven, after snorkeling you’ll want to swing by Cuban Coffee Queen for a yummy drink, Cuban favorites or other sandwhiches and salads. And the best part is, everything is super reasonably priced (which is a huge bonus to find in Key West).

key west trip ideas

Cuban Coffee Queen has multiple locations on the island, however, my favorite (and in my opinion the cutest) is their original location on Margaret Street near the Key West Historic Seaport. It’s an adorable walk-up stand right near the water and the side of the establishment has the infamous ‘Greetings From Key West’ mural. From here, you’ll be able to walk to enjoy another great area of Key West (more on that below).

Front of small white building with menus and and signs hanging up

4. Snap a Pic at the Iconic ‘Greetings From Key West’ Mural

Be sure to snap a pic at the infamous ‘Greetings From Key West’ mural on the side of Cuban Coffee Queen. Even if you don’t want to stop for food, this is still a great area for a cute pic and a perfect place to start exploring the Key West Historic Seaport.

Brown drink in a clear cub in front of a blue mural on side of building saying 'Key West'

5. Stroll Through the Key West Historic Seaport

Right near Cuban Coffee Queen and the Key West mural, is the lovely historic seaport. It’s a nice area to go for a relaxed stroll (much quieter than Duval Street). You can get great harbor views of the sailboats and yachts plus even do some shopping and pick up some trinkets or other items to take home as souvenirs.

The cutest road to stroll is the pedestrian-only road called Lazy Way Lane. It has cute, colorful shops, palm trees and lots of islandy trinket shops.

Tall sailboats in harbor with palm trees in the background

6. Get Key Lime Pie on a Stick at Kermit’s Key Lime Shoppe

Even if you only have one day in Key West, you MUST try Key Lime Pie. One of the quirkiest and yummiest pies to get is the Kermit’s Key Lime Pie, dipped in chocolate served on a stick. Yep, you heard that right, served like a popsicle! If that sounds like a little much to you, you can also buy it on a stick NOT dipped in chocolate, or you can just purchase a traditional slice of pie. However, if you’re only going to try one piece of Key Lime Pie, I definitely recommend Kermit’s Key Lime Shoppe .

They have a few locations in Key West, however, I like the Elizabeth Street location that is right near the Historic Seaport. It’s a super cute yellow and green wooden building and their original location on the island.

7. walk and shop on duval street.

Duval Street is the largest main street in Key West known for bars, restaraunts, galleries and tourist shops and one of the most popular things to do during a day in Key West. For a calmer, more family-friendly experience on Duval, you may want to walk and shop Duval Street during the day.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Key West, FL🌞 (@keywest)

One of my favorite spots is the fanciest Walgreens you’ll ever see (yes… Walgreens). The Walgreens on Duval is stationed in a converted, colorful, vintage building called The Strand Theater. From the outside you would neverrrr guess this beautiful building is currently home to a Walgreens. Another favorite cute spot on Duval is the rainbow crosswalk intersection.

At night, the bars on Duval come alive and the sidewalks are crowded. If the bar scene is your thing, you may consider booking a Duval Street pub crawl to experience some of the island’s most iconic bars like Sloppy Joe’s.

8. Visit the Southernmost Point and Mile Marker Zero

While definitely touristy, making a quick stop at the Southernmost Point and Mile Marker Zero are two classic things to do in Key West in one day. The Southernmost Point marker indicates the Southernmost Point of the Continental United States, from this point you are actually closer to Cuba than Miami! It’s a fun spot that’s mostly a quick photo opportunity.

Mile Marker Zero is similar to the Southernmost Point in that it’s a very quick stop/photo-op. It’s the end of Highway US 1 and just a fun spot to see as you are so far south in the Florida Keys.

9. watch the sunset at the sunset celebration at mallory square.

If you are doing Key West in a day, I sure hope you have time to stick around for sunset because the Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square is one of my favorite things about Key West. I have visited the sunset celebration many, many times and it’s always a fun experience.

Silhouette of 6 people with red sunset behind

Beginning about two hours before sunset, right on the water in Mallory Square, you’ll catch the Sunset Celebration every single night of the year. There are local vendors, musicians, stunt performers and more! From here you get to watch the huge ball of sun drop below the horizon and possibly even clap once it’s set! It really is a great time.

If you prefer a quieter and possibly more romantic experience watching the sunset, be sure to check out one of the many awesome sunset sails that Key West offers. You can hop aboard a large catamaran, sailboat or even a small private boat to experience the sunset from the water. I also have done a sunset sail in Key West and it’s another awesome way to experience the sunset that I highly recommend. For other great excursion ideas check out my top Key West excursions guide (they are all worth the price!).

10. eat dinner at amigos tortilla bar.

When living in Key West, Amigos was by far the restaraunt I most frequently visited. It’s a super yummy Mexican joint with the option to sit in the open-air facing Duval Street (makes for great people watching). You can buy delicious tacos, burritos or bowls with various veggie and meat options with (of course) Baja fish being a top contender.

Amigos is a great option for a relaxed, yummy dinner on Duval in the heart of Key West. If you are curious about other great places to eat, be sure to check out my Ultimate Key West Food Guide.

Wooden building with red overhang with a sign saying 'Amigos' on top

And that is the best way to spend your day in Key West! Please let me know if you have any questions about a day trip to Key West from Miami or from anywhere in the Florida Keys!  I’m a real person  that loves to talk travel and I’ll be sure to get back to you!

Hey Meggan! How fun you’ll be in Key West for a day. I’d say it depends on how comfortable you are with walking and how much time you have in port. the longest walk is only 30 minutes with a couple 20 minute walks in there as well. However, walking is a great way to see the area so I do recommend it if you have time/ability. Otherwise, a golf cart is the next best idea!

I would like to go in April. Can you recommend a clean affordable place to stay for 2-3 days ?

Hey Karen! I don’t have many hotel recommendations, however, on the top of my list for next time we visit is The Perry Hotel & Marina Key West which is just barely off Key West on Stock Island which helps with the price a little bit (but they have a shuttle that takes you to Duval Street if needed).

Do you think it’s worth visiting Key West if I can only go for the day via Key West Express? Is that too short of a time? I’ll be visiting Sanibel for a while in late august and was thinking of taking a day trip from Fort Myers. Thank you.

Hey Barb! I hope you have a great time in Florida. It looks like the ferry is about 3.5 hours each way leaving around 4-5 hours to explore Key West in one day. To me that seems like a lot of travel time for not much time in Key West, however, it that sounds okay to you it could be worth it! A great option would be to take the Conch Tour Train to get a tour of the island and see all of the highlights. That would be a great way to make the most of your time there. I’d also recommend checking out the Historic Key West Seaport and picking up food from Blue Heaven or Cuban Coffee Queen. I hope this helps!

Key West, the southernmost point in the United States, is famous for watersports, lively nightlife, beaches, historic sites and its pastel, conch-style architecture.

Duval Street , one of the most energetic strips of shops, bars and cafes anywhere, offers Sloppy Joe’s bar, a favorite Key West hangout of novelist Ernest Hemingway. And, for the more sober-minded, there’s Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum . (Look for the celebrated six-toed cats).

Walking tours of Key West are the best way to see the island’s intriguing homes, courtyards, and gardens. Start in the center of town at the Key West City Cemetery , which offers a glimpse of Key West’s past and its offbeat sense of humor, as exhibited by gravestones that read, “I told you I was sick,” and “At least I know where he’s sleeping tonight.”

How To Spend A Day In Key West, Florida

Follow our one-day itinerary of the best things to do in Key West, Florida.

key west trip ideas

  • Morning In Key West
  • Midday In Key West
  • Afternoon In Key West
  • Evening In Key West

When you're in Key West, you're on island time, so cancel the morning wake-up call and let the crashing waves and beach breezes be your alarm. Put on your walking shoes and prepare for a day of blue skies and palm-shaded sidewalks. From brunch to the beach to cocktail hour and beyond, we have plenty of ideas for your stay, so let us put together your ideal itinerary for a day in Key West .

The first step? Put all your cares away. Key West is a worry-free zone. Trade your worries for a slice of Key lime pie on a stick. After sampling Key West's signature dessert, stroll the white sandy beaches or visit one of the region's historic sites. There's something for everyone in Key West, Florida, so here are some suggestions to help you plan your next trip.

How To Spend The Morning In Key West

8 a.m. / stroll the beach.

Roll out of bed and onto the beach. Sugar-white sands and salty waves are the ideal supplements to energize your morning routine. Run, bike, or just meander down any Key West beach : Smathers Beach, Rest Beach, Higgs Beach, Dog Beach, Fort Zachary Taylor State Park beach. Keep walking—you'll find one.

9 a.m. / Have Brunch, Island Style

Wander to Blue Heaven —a fan-favorite breakfast spot at the corner of Petronia and Thomas—and order the Lobster Benedict or a seafood omelet. Keep an eye out because you might run into one of Key West's free-roaming hens and roosters. They tend to congregate on street corners. Then grab a cup of coffee from one of the town's Cuban Coffee Queen locations.

10 a.m. / Ride A Beach Cruiser

Two wheels are always better than four on the narrow streets of Key West. Traffic is slow in the island's historic downtown as everyone is on island time. Rent a beach cruiser and breeze all over town (it's only two miles wide by four miles long) to see the sights. Don't miss The Southernmost Point of the Continental U.S. and its brightly painted buoy proclaiming "90 Miles to Cuba." Also, catch a glimpse of the historic Key West Lighthouse nearby on Whitehead Street.

How To Spend Midday In Key West

11 a.m. / meet hemingway's cats.

Legend has it that the felines that roam the Hemingway Home & Museum , a Spanish Colonial mansion where the author lived throughout the 1930s, are descendants of Snowball, a six-toed cat that a sea captain gave to Hemingway's sons. Take a guided tour of the property and peek at the author's antiques, which he collected during his travels around the world.

12 p.m. / Eat And Shop Local

There are plenty of places to find a great meal in Key West. Check out Eaton Street Seafood Market for a lobster roll, Banana Cafe for a French bistro experience of crepes or the Florida Lobster BLT, and Onlywood for Neapolitan-style pizza. Then spend a little time browsing the shops on Duval Street for the perfect souvenir.

How To Spend The Afternoon in Key West

2 p.m. / explore indoor gardens.

Walk through a botanical wonderland at the Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory , an indoor oasis where you can see birds, butterflies, and tropical plants galore. While you're there, see over 50 butterfly species from around the world and 20 exotic bird species, plus learn about the monarch butterfly's migration patterns. Enjoy personal time with Rhett and Scarlett, the resident flamingos, by booking time to visit them with a group of six friends.

4:30 p.m. / Try A Classic Key West Treat

Remember that Key lime pie on a stick we mentioned earlier? Now's the perfect time to try one. Stop into Kermit's Key West Key Lime Shoppe for a frozen, chocolate-dipped slice of tart Key lime pie. Breakfast and lunch are available until 3 p.m., including the fish and chips house special.

How To Spend The Evening in Key West

6 p.m. / treat yourself to fine dining.

Walk down Duval and grab a table on the front porch of Nine One Five , a bistro in an 1860s Victorian house located at (you guessed it) 915 Duval Street. Order a selection of tapas and stay to enjoy the late-night wine bar—and the people-watching from your table on the porch. Or make a reservation at Blackfin Bistro for fresh seafood and an extensive wine list.

7:45 p.m. / Catch the Sunset

There's a Key West tradition everyone has to do it at least once: After dinner, join the crowd at Mallory Square to applaud the sunset. If you're lucky, you might see the fabled green flash said to occur when the sun sinks below the watery horizon.

9 p.m. / Raise A Glass

Key West has no shortage of popular watering holes, especially those known for famous patrons. Stop by Ernest Hemingway's old haunt, Sloppy Joe's on Duval Street, or raise a glass at the Chart Room at Pier House Resort & Spa, where Jimmy Buffet used to play for free drinks. Wherever you land, you may luck out and catch some live music.

12 a.m. / Say Goodnight

When it's time to turn in, lay your head in the beautifully appointed rooms at The Marquesa Hotel , a gorgeous hotel in the heart of Old Town Key West. Or book a stay at The Mansion on the Sea , an oceanfront B&B in a pastel-painted Victorian mansion.

How to get there, how to get around.

You don’t have to break out your passport to spend a few days in an island paradise. Just head to Key West, Florida.

Key West is home to some of the most spectacular beaches in America, and dare we say, the world. Its gin-clear waters that lap up against white-sand beaches will leave you in awe. Its vibrant community and fun nightlife will leave you with lasting memories. And its water activities — like snorkeling, diving, and deep-sea fishing — will keep you active from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave.

"Key West has hundreds of years of interesting and infamous history, which includes pirates, shipwrecking, treasure, rum running, military exploits, and billionaire's ventures,” Analise Smith, founder of Key West Food Tours, told Travel + Leisure . “Its melting pot of culture and turquoise ocean surroundings has given way to a vibrant food scene, which includes the most delicious selection of local seafood and tropical fruits.”

Smith added, “When deciding why to come to Key West, it might be a shorter list to ask, 'Why not?' And either way, you'll have a hard time convincing yourself out of the idea.”

Ready to plot out your Key West vacation? Keep reading about the best places to stay , eat, and play for a Key West getaway you’ll never forget.

Best Hotels and Resorts

Courtesy of Marquesa Hotel

Marquesa Hotel

One of the best hotels in the area, The Marquesa Hotel embodies the Key West spirit through and through. The hotel, which was voted one of the best resorts in Florida by T+L readers in 2023, is classically styled with dark wood flooring and easy breezy island furnishings, and a bright blue exterior paint color that matches the nearby sea. Don’t miss the on-site Café Marquesa for an upscale meal.

Ocean Key Resort & Spa

Ocean Key Resort & Spa has perhaps the most coveted address in all of Key West: Zero Duval Street. The hotel — also voted one of the best resorts in Florida by T+L readers in 2023 — could not be more conveniently located and boasts spacious rooms and suites, each with an epic view of the ocean or Duval Street.

Sunset Key Cottages

For a little bit of luxury and solitude, find your way to Sunset Key Cottages , which was a T+L reader favorite in 2022 . The resort sits nestled on a 27-acre private island just off the coast of Key West, and offers up to four-bedroom abodes so even large families can vacation together.

“Though we are only a four-mile by two-mile island, we are chock full of ‘must experience’ things to do,” Smith said. Here are a few not-to-miss highlights.

Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum

Celebrate the life and work of Key West’s literary great, Ernest Hemingway, with a visit to his former residence-turned-museum, aptly named The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum . The home is perfectly preserved just as he left it in the 1930s. It showcases personal items and antiques — and displays the very areas where he penned some of history’s greatest novels. The museum is also home to a large colony of polydactyl (six-toed) cats , which are all descendants of Hemingway's own feline companions.

Southernmost Point

Go ahead and take an iconic Instagram photo at Southernmost Point . The massive buoy, built in 1983, marks the location of, as the name suggests, the southernmost point in the United States. It has become a popular destination for visitors in Key West to also mark their time on vacation with at least a photo of two.

Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park

Explore a bit of American history with a visit to Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park . It is home to the largest archive of Civil War armament on Earth. It also has a gorgeous beach that is open to the public for swimming, snorkeling, and outdoor dining. As the southernmost state park in the continental United States, it is yet another cool spot to visit when in Key West.

Key West Food Tours

Get a taste of what Key West has to offer with Smith's Key West Food Tours . Smith offers a variety of tours, including a tasting and cultural tour showcasing the island’s Cuban and Caribbean flavors, along with a seafood experience, bar crawl, and even a food tour dedicated to Hemingway.

The Green Parrot

As one of the oldest bars in Key West, The Green Parrot is the place to be to mix and mingle with locals. The bar is well-known for its local music and its stellar drinks, but don’t come hungry as it only serves snacks.

The Bull and Whistle

Enjoy even more of the Key West weather by sipping a cocktail or a cold beer at The Bull and Whistle , an open-air bar right on Duval Street. The bar offers table seating facing its small stage for local acts, a large bar to belly up to, and plenty of pool tables so you can challenge your travel companions to a game.

Key West has a vibrant drag scene, and there’s no better place to experience it than at Aquaplex . The nightclub puts on shows every Monday and Tuesday at 9 p.m. and every Wednesday to Sunday at both 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., giving you plenty of opportunities to see your favorite act.

Best Restaurants

According to Smith, the best part about dining in Key West is that no matter where you go, you’ll likely end up with a great view. “The local grocery stores and even the fast food chain restaurants have ocean views,” Smith said. But perhaps more importantly: “The food is so fresh and local — you'll likely eat delicious sustainable fish and shrimp here that you won't see anywhere else in the country.”

Blue Heaven

Start your day in Key West off with a delicious bang with a visit to Blue Heaven . The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but is most well-known for its outrageously good morning menu. The popular pancakes are made from scratch and come in plain, banana, pineapple, pecan, or blueberry. Meanwhile, its shrimp and grits come with a side of its famous Betty's Banana Bread.

Garbo’s Grill

Dig into some seafood delights with a meal at Garbo’s Grill . The diner specializes in quick and easy bites like its Cayo Fish, made with red cabbage, mango, jalapeno, cilantro, onion, and its house Caribbean sauce over whatever the fish of the day is. Also notable is its highly beloved lobster roll, crafted with Maine Lobster meat and mayo on a buttered and grilled roll.

Azur Restaurant

For an upscale evening in Key West, head to Azur Restaurant . The Mediterranean eatery sits a few blocks off of Duval Street, providing a quieter atmosphere to enjoy a luxurious meal. The menu includes the likes of Key West pink shrimp in a lemon butter and garlic sauce, and steamed mussels in a rosemary and tomato broth.

Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Shoppe

No visit to Key West would be complete without getting at least a slice, or two, or heck, an entire key lime pie. Find the sweetest of the bunch at Kermit’s , a one-time roadside stand turned popular bakery with two locations in the Keys. The shop sells other dessert treats, but none can top its key lime pies and pie bars. And if you really fall in love with them, you can always have Kermit’s shipped to anywhere in the continental U.S.

Flavio Vallenari/Getty Images

The best time to visit Key West is from January to May, when the temperatures around the rest of the nation tend to dip, but remain relatively constant in the Keys.

“Winter tends to be a guest favorite,” Smith said. “There's not too many U.S. destinations that are still running snorkel and dive trips in January, and are booking out their outside dining faster than their inside tables. When it's snow and icicles everywhere else, we are our company motto: ‘Sun, Rum, and Key lime pie.’”

However, Key West is home to several stellar annual festivals throughout the year that are worthy of planning a trip around. That includes The Key Lime Festival , which typically runs in late June or early July, along with Hemingway Days , which honors the life of Hemingway. There’s also Fantasy Fest , a massive, 10-day party extravaganza held in late October, which includes parades, drag performances, costume contests, and a pageant to crown the King and Queen of Fantasy Fest.

There are two ways to get to Key West: drive or fly. There are direct flights to Key West International Airport (EYW) from all around the country, including flights from Chicago, Dallas, New York City, Boston, Charlotte, and Atlanta.

Though it could take you longer, driving to Key West from Miami is an experience all on its own. Visitors can rent a car in Miami and hop on the US 1, known as the Overseas Highway , which takes guests across 106 glorious miles and over 42 bridges, with epic views from start to finish.

Chris LaBasco/Getty Images

Smith noted that “walking and bicycling are the transportation of choice” in Key West. However, there are a few other modes of transport you can try.

Uber: Uber is operational in Key West. It’s available to and from the Key West International Airport.

Taxi: There are several local taxi services operating in Key West, including Key West Taxi and D.B. Taxi , both of which operate 24/7.

Pedicab: Want more of a scenic ride? Hop on any of the pedicabs traversing Key West. The rides are much more expensive than traditional cabs but do come with a lot more fun. You can also book pedicabs in advance for tours around town .

The nation’s southernmost city is filled with fun bars, restaurants, historic homes and museums, beaches, water sports and eclectic characters with stories to tell. A three-hour trip from Miami (you can also fly into Key West International Airport ), the drive to Cayo Hueso is anything but stressful when you’re surrounded by crystal blue, sparkling waters on both sides of the highway. A therapeutic drive forces you to slow down and will get you in the mood for what’s to come—boozing, cruising, and possibly some dolphin-watching. Use this guide to plan your trip including where to stay, what to do, when to go, and more

Planning Your Trip

  • Best Time to Visit : Visit between March and May when the weather is milder for South Florida (think 70s and low 80s Fahrenheit and less humidity all around) and there aren't as many tourists.
  • Language: English, though there are many native Spanish speakers.
  • Currency: U.S. dollar.
  • Getting Around: You can rent a car in Key West or use a rideshare app, but a pretty common and somewhat adventurous way to get around Key West is on a Vespa. Many hotels on the island have rental programs for guests, as do local tour companies.
  • Travel Tip: If you’re not much of a scooter fan or even a bike rider, you can get around Key West perfectly fine on foot. Old Town is worth exploring at a leisurely pace, anyway. There’s a European-style (above ground) cemetery worth checking out and most of the restaurants, bars, and sights we’ve listed are easily accessible when you’re walking.

Things to Do

Local bars stay open really late here, and most of them hire local talent to play originals, as well as covers of songs we all love. The Ernest Hemingway Home is a must-do, as is a photo at the southernmost point of the continental U.S. , designated by an anchored concrete buoy. The well-known tourist attraction has been at the corner of South and Whitehead Streets since 1983 and is one of the most visited and photographed attraction in the Keys.

  • You’ll likely end up on Duval Street at some point, where you'll find shopping, dining, and drinking galore.
  • Mallory Square is where a daily Sunset Celebration takes place with live entertainment that includes fire breathers and artists of all sorts.
  • If tours are more your speed, reserve a spot on the Ghosts and Gravestones trolley tour . Guides combine Key West history with some clever ways to make you scream, so this activity may not be suitable for children under the age of 13.

What to Eat and Drink

If you like seafood, you’re in the right place. It’s always fresh and always perfectly cooked. If you’d rather go fishing and present your catch at a restaurant, they’ll season and cook it for you. While you're in town you have to try a slice of Key lime pie. Some of our favorite restaurants in Key West include El Siboney (Cuban food), Eaton Street Seafood Market & Restaurant (go for the stone crabs), Half Shell Raw Bar (oysters, pelicans and the decor here will leave you wanting more) and Croissants de France (for a full-on carby French breakfast of crepes, fresh-baked pastries and French toast—with a side of eggs for balance).

When it comes to imbibing, the options are endless, but for craft cocktails, Caroline’s Other Side is a cozy, cool bar hidden in a Key West-style home. Breweries are abundant here, too. Waterfront Brewery and First Flight Island Restaurant & Brewery are a couple; there are also rum distilleries (Key West First Legal Rum Distillery) and the down and dirty, good old bars that haven’t changed since they opened, like Sloppy Joe’s (one of Hemingway's favorite haunts ), Green Parrot Bar, Capt Tony’s Saloon and El Meson de Pepe where you can dance nightly to salsa.

Where to Stay

Where do we begin? If you want to relax right outside town, there are some newly renovated and reopened hotels worth getting to know, like Havana Cabana, 24 North Hotel, the Perry Hotel Key West and the Gates Hotel. Smack in the middle of the downtown area, though, the possibilities are endless. La Concha Hotel & Spa serves up glamorous 1920s vibes (it opened nearly 100 years ago), Casa Marina Key West, a Waldorf Astoria Resort channels Old Hollywood but in Florida, and the Saint Hotel Key West, an Autograph Collection Hotel, feels dark and mysterious in all the right ways that New Orleans might feel dark and mysterious. Old school bed and breakfasts are abundant in the Southernmost City, too, and there’s something refreshing about booking the old-fashioned way and having bread baskets delivered to your door in the morning.

Explore the best camping spots in the Florida Keys , best hotels for tourists and everything you need to know about visiting the Keys in summer .

Getting There

You can drive into town (there’s only one road on and off the island ) or fly into Key West International Airport . While cars are helpful to get around, especially when traveling from one side of the island to the other, most areas are easily walkable. On the rare occasion you’re sailing around the world, or even just the state of Florida, you can dock nearly anywhere on the island. Some hotels give guests the option of parking their boat instead of a car.

Money Saving Tips

Take advantage of parks and museums that are free of charge for all visitors. Walking, of course, is free, good for you, and a more affordable option than hopping in a rideshare car. If you and everyone in your crew is of legal drinking age, First Legal Rum Distillery offers free rum tastings, with the purchase of one shot glass per person.

  • The Children’s Animal Park has a petting zoo, which will delight kiddos of all ages.
  • The Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center is another fun and educational place to learn about local plant and animal species.
  • Higgs Beach is free to visit, too. Pack a blanket, a picnic, and lots of water, and spend the day soaking in the sun and saltwater.

Since we’ve been to Key West so many times, we’re sharing out expert tips and tricks to ensure a smooth and enjoyable vacation for the whole family. From choosing the right accommodations to exploring family-friendly attractions, dining at delicious kid-friendly restaurants, and making the most of outdoor activities, we’ve got everything covered. So, get ready to plan an adventure that both you AND your kids will not forget.

If you have any other questions about visiting Key West with kids or doing the Florida Keys road trip , send them our way. We’re happy to help plan and have lots of experience here. Leave a comment or send us a note and we’ll get back to you ASAP!

Choosing the Right Accommodations

One of the first things you’ll need to consider when planning your family vacation to Key West is choosing the right accommodations . Luckily, Key West offers a wide range of options that cater to families with kids of all ages, as well as adults only trips, or even hotels with adults only pools and then family zones in other spots. From beachfront resorts to cozy vacation rentals, there’s something for every taste and nearly every budget in the Conch Republic .

Note: before we get too far into picking where to stay in Key West, remember that it is one of the most expensive destinations in Florida. When we talk about “budget options” they are for sure the least expensive picks, but probably still more than you might generally consider to be a great deal in general. Check out our ideas for doing the Florida Keys on a budget!

Hotel, Resort or Vacation Rental in Key West?

If you’re looking for a hassle-free experience, staying at a family-friendly resort might be the ideal choice. These resorts often provide a host of amenities and activities designed to keep both parents and kids entertained, and often you can . Think pools with water slides, kids clubs, and even on-site babysitting services. Some resorts even offer special packages that include discounted rates for nearby family-friendly attractions. Ideas: Margaritaville Resort (awesome location), Oceans Edge Resort (quiet and upscale), Ibis Bay Resort (vintage and mid-level)

For families looking for a more quiet and personal setting, consider renting a vacation home or condo. With the flexibility of having your own space, you can easily accommodate larger families or enjoy a quiet evening in after a day of exploring. Many of these rentals come equipped with full kitchens, allowing you to prepare meals for picky eaters or save money by dining in. We look for vacation rentals that also have a barbeque, because cooking out it always fun when we’re traveling. VRBO has the most diverse options for vacation rentals in Key West .

Something to consider about Key West if you’re thinking about the Bed and Breakfast option, because when you start researching you’ll see that there are a ton of them in KW, is that most B&Bs are NOT family friendly. You’ll see so many cute, historic B&Bs in Key West , but very few of them allow children. Save the ones you’re most interested in for an adults-only trip. Sorry.

Which Neighborhood to Choose in Key West

Location is another important factor to consider when choosing accommodations in Key West. If you want to be close to the action, look for places near popular attractions like Mallory Square or Duval Street. On the other hand, if you prefer a quieter atmosphere, consider accommodations further away from the hustle and bustle. We like to stay over on Roosevelt Blvd or by Higgs Beach, but also you’ll find that Stock Island is super mellow.

Regardless of where you decide to stay, be sure to check for family-friendly amenities such as cribs, high chairs, and laundry facilities. These small details can make a big difference in ensuring a comfortable stay for your family. Even though we usually pack for seven days when we do a week long Keys vacation, we spend a lot of time doing wildlife adventures and sweating, so we always end up needing to rewear clothes or do wash, and that’s why location is important (sweating and walking, laundry needs…).

Now that you have the inside scoop on choosing the right accommodations, you’re one step closer to planning a super fun vacation in Key West with kids. Whether you opt for a family-friendly resort or a cozy vacation rental, make sure it aligns with your family’s needs, preferences and budget. With the perfect accommodations in place, you’ll be well-equipped to embark on a fantastic adventure with your little ones on this awesome island.

Our Key West Hotel Reviews

We’ve stayed lots of places in Key West with kids. From budget stays to high end hotels in the heart of the seaport, we’ve done them. We prefer to have more space over awesome when we’re in Key West for more than three days. With that, you’ll see that we like to be outside of town a bit. Here are our top recommendations (and full articles about each):

  • The Marker Key West – high end, located at the Historic Seaport
  • Coconut Beach Resort – mid level with kitchenettes and communal outdoor kitchen space, located near the Southernmost Point
  • Hotel Laureate Key West – all suites hotel, located on Roosevelt Blvd
  • Perry Hotel & Marina – trendy, quiet and modern with two pools, located on Stock Island (outside of town)
  • Gates Hotel Key West – very nice w/ a great pool and BUDGET friendly, located on Roosevelt Blvd
  • 24 North Hotel – another great budget option, next door to the Gates Hotel

Best Family-Friendly Things to do in Key West

In addition to finding the right place to stay, Key West offers an endless list of family-friendly things to do that are sure to keep both kids and adults entertained throughout your vacation. From outdoor adventures to educational experiences, there is something for everyone in this vibrant island destination. Key West with kids is really fun, even when you’re visiting the Florida Keys in summ e r and it’s extra hot outside.

Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory

One must-visit attraction for families is the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory . Step into a tropical paradise and be surrounded by hundreds of colorful butterflies as they flutter around you. This immersive experience is not only visually stunning but also educational, providing an opportunity for kids to learn about the life cycle and behaviors of these fascinating creatures.

There are also lots of cool, tropical birds in the conservatory, including flamingos. Even though we’ve been several times, we always come back to the Butterfly and Nature Conservatory. In any weather, it’s one of the best things to do in Key West with kids.

A Day at Fort Zachary Taylor State Park

For some fun in the sun, head to Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park . This beautiful beach offers crystal-clear waters and soft sand, perfect for building sandcastles or simply lounging under an umbrella. The park also has several nature trails and a historic fort that is great to explore with kids. Pack a picnic and spend the day swimming and enjoying the natural beauty of Key West.

Note: the Florida Keys do NOT have a ton of beach space when you actually visit one of the few beaches. Fort Zachary Taylor State Park has one of the largest beach areas in the Keys, so anyone visiting Key West with kids needs to add this to their time there, if for nothing else but to get out extra energy on hot days.

The Key West Aquarium – Very Vintage

Another cool family-friendly attraction is the Key West Aquarium . I think it may actually be the most vintage tourist attraction in the whole of the Florida Keys, and it’s a must for doing Key West with kids. The Key West Aquarium has a variety of marine life, including sharks, stingrays, and turtles. Kids will be thrilled to touch a live shark or hold a hermit crab during the interactive exhibits.

There are two very unique outdoor exhibit areas that include sharks and other larger fish. Oh! And there’s a moray eel in the most surprising exhibit! I’m not gonna tell you where; you have to look for it. The knowledgeable staff is always on hand to provide interesting facts and answer any questions your little ones may have, making it a fun and educational experience for the whole family.

Key West Shipwreck Museum

You can’t visit Key West with kids and not go to the shipwreck museum. It’s actually great for any age and is not what you’d expect. You see, Key West was the richest city in America at one point and you’ll learn all about why here at the Key West Shipwreck Museum . There are all kinds of exhibits and artifacts here, so even if you go into it thinking you’re not interested, you’ll get sucked into it.

A bonus of visiting the Key West Shipwreck Museum is the lookout tower you can climb (weather permitting). As you’ll learn, it was from the town that the wreckers would spot ships that ran aground and hence the fortunes would roll into town. I love this museum, and even if it seems like it’s going to be a bit cliched, it’s not and it’s totally worth the visit.

As you explore these family-friendly attractions, keep in mind that Key West also offers a range of other activities specifically catered to kids . From pirate-themed cruises to glass-bottom boat tours, there are endless opportunities for adventure and discovery. So, keep your curiosity alive and prepare to be amazed as you embark on a memorable journey through Key West with your family.

Key West Outdoor Activities – Favorite Things to do On the Water

I always think that the way to have the best time on vacation in Key West is to be out on the water or exploring on foot. You might be surprised by the number of outdoor activities that Key West has to offer, especially considering that most people think of it as a historic or party destination. This tropical paradise is not only known for the town’s colorful streets, but also for the thrilling water activities that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Part of doing Key West with kids is getting them excited about the water!

Key West Beaches

Y’all, Key West is NOT a beach destination. For the people who are dreaming of a Florida beach vacation, the Keys are not the destination for you. There are lots of islands in Florida that AREN’T the Keys with amazing beaches. BUT, if you’re in the mood for some relaxation, head to one of Key West’s beaches for a swim. With its turquoise waters and white sand, Smathers Beach is a popular choice for families, and it’s one of the best in Key West. You can also venture to Fort Zachary Taylor State Park’s beach (mentioned above) for more space and additional things to do besides swimming.

Snorkeling and Nature Tours in Key West

For those seeking more action-packed adventures, Key West offers a range of kid-friendly water activities, both above and bellow the water. There are some awesome wildlife tours in the Florida Keys , with a fair number of them going our of Key West.

Embark on a snorkeling excursion and discover the underwater wonders of the different reefs or the Key sponge gardens of the Key West National Wildlife Refuge. Kids will be amazed by the colorful fish and vibrant coral reefs that can be found just beneath the surface. If you’re into it, booking a kayaking or paddleboarding tour is another great way to get on the water in Key West. Glide through the mangrove forests and observe the diverse wildlife that calls this ecosystem home.

Our top picks for kid-friendly wildlife tours out of Key West include:

  • Catamaran and Kayaking with Key West Eco Tours – Book our EXACT tour here! So awesome!
  • Honest Eco Tours – dolphin cruise or snorkeling – Book a trip on the Squid  or  Blue Q with Honest Eco Tours here!
  • Glowing kayaking with Night Kayak Key West – Learn more about Night Kayak Key West here!
  • Sailing w/ kayaks and snorkeling with Danger Charters – Book this kid-frie n dly tour here
  • Sunset snorkeling w/ dolphin cruise via Sunset Watersports – Book it here (loved the evening experience)
  • Sand Key Reef Snorkeling, VERY GOOD WITH KIDS – Book it with Sunset Watersports

Clearly this is our favorite part about visiting Key West with kids. We take every opportunity we can to get on the water with them. And no, not all of these tours were done in one trip. That would be so expensive.

Tip: book your wildlife tours as far in advance as you’re comfortable. This way it can be budgeted in advance, will cut back on paying more day-of, and if you need to stagger your spending, not having a large expense like tours hit at the same time as a hotel is a good way to make a trip affordable.

Parasailing with Kids in Key West

You’re never going to get me to jump out of an airplane, so parasailing is the closest I will ever come. If you want to try parasailing above the sparkling waters of the Atlantic Ocean, the breathtaking views of the Key West coastline and sandbars below is awesome. We’ve parasailed in Key West with kids with Sebago Watersports and it was great. I’ve also gone out with them with adult friends and loved it.

The thing about parasailing is that the rise is so gentle and fairly slow, so even if you have a fear of heights, it’s a soft build up to the maximum height. The first time we did parasailing with the kids they weren’t sure about it, but each one ended up loving it and wanted to do it again. It’s a gentle but fun way to enjoy the outdoors in Key West from a completely different perspective.

Book parasailing with Sebag o Key West here!

Our Favorite Kid-Friendly Restaurants in Key West

Now that you’ve see all the fun there is to have with kids in Key West, it’s time to dig into some delicious cuisine that both kids and adults will love. Key West offers a diverse culinary scene that caters to all taste buds, making it a perfect destination for food-loving families… and it’s not just chicken tenders and mac’n’cheese. From fresh seafood to satisfying comfort foods, there are plenty of kid-friendly restaurants that ensure a memorable dining experience for everyone.

Historic Seaport Restaurants with Kids

When it comes to sampling local flavors, a visit to the Conch Republic Seafood Com p any is a must. Situated right on the waterfront, this restaurant offers a vibrant atmosphere and a menu filled with mouthwatering seafood dishes. From crispy fish and chips to crab cakes, there’s something for every little seafood lover here. Don’t miss out on their famous conch fritters (other people love them… not me).

For those thinking Italian on a hot day is a good idea, a trip to Dante’s Poolside Bar & Restaurant is in order. Located at the famous Dante’s Key West Resort, this family-friendly eatery combines Italian cuisine with ocean views. Everyone can enjoy wood-fired pizzas topped with fresh ingredients, while more picky kiddos can munch on cheesy pasta or sliders. Note: on weekend and during events this place becomes rather partisome.

I really like the Boat House Bar & Grill in the Historic Seaport, and it’s great with kids (and for happy hour). We tend to head directly here after morning water activities. Our FAVORITE budget eat in all of Key West is Harpoon Harry’s just outside of the Seaport. It’s a cash only restaurant, but it’s great with kids, they have awesome Key Lime Pie , and the staff is the most kind you’ll meet.

Duval Street Family-friendly Dining

Duval Street is interesting because it’s where you’ll find the shopping, the wild side of Key West (think bars and loud people), the LGBT community hub, and so much more. It’s a big mishmash of everything that makes the town fun. Key West with kids can absolutely include time on Duval Street, and just a block over is Whitehead Street, which has all sorts of history and tourist attractions, so you’ll be in the area anyways, no doubt.

If you’re in the mood for some classic Key West fare, head over to DJ’s Clam Shack. This casual restaurant specializes in serving up seafood and comfort food favorites. Kids can enjoy a plate of crispy fish and French fries, while adults might opt for lobster rolls. The laid-back atmosphere and generous portion sizes make DJ’s Clam Shack a popular spot on Duval Street.

We’ve got more spots that we like over here on Duval street, but we’ll keep it simple. Here are a few more easy and delicious picks for when you’re on this side of Key West with kids who need food ASAP:

  • Southernmost Sandy’s Café – great patio and huge portions, right by the Butterfly Conservatory
  • Caroline’s Café – fun patio in the heart of the busies part of Duval Street, great food
  • Blue Heaven – it’s a standard if you’re visiting Key West with kids or without; my favorite is the bananas foster with hot banana bread
  • Moondog Café – wonderful place with quality food and great for people with dietary restrictions
  • Pinchers – yes, this is a Florida chain, but it’s the best spot to get stone crab when it’s in season and it’s always a fun experience (even when the service isn’t awesome)

More Great Dining in Key West with Kids

Yes, there are lots more restaurants all around Key West and many that are wonderful with kids. Here are a few more picks, scattered around the island in different neighborhoods.

  • The Breakfast Club Too – this is between the Historic Seaport and Mallory Square, great lunches and breakfasts
  • El Siboney – wonderful Cuban cuisine and cake, great with kids; there is one smack in the middle of the island and one on Stock Island
  • Frita’s Cuban Burger Café – this is an outdoor patio restaurant, very small and delicious, just off Duval Street but not exactly a mainstream eatery
  • Cupcake Sushi – this is one of the most unique dessert spots in Key West; located in Old Town, it’s quite out of the way from tourist areas, but is so fun and run by the coolest lady
