The app is excellent, well designed and easy to use (hence 4 stars). HOWEVER, it is completely let down by Lothian’s bus tracking data. There appears to be two ways of tracking: GPS, which is accurate and tells you where the bus is. Timetable, which is completely inaccurate and at the whim of traffic, bus breakdowns or whatever else. The result is seeing a bus that is allegedly a few minutes away, then due, then nonexistent. The number of times I’ve sprinted for a bus only to find the estimated time go back up to 10+ minutes... the app tells you that bus times might be estimates - why not mark them as “timetabled” and “tracked”? Then we can ignore some of them. There might be a way of seeing this already, some times are grey, some are black - in my experience this doesn’t seem to always reflect accurate times.

Useless and annoying

It works as well as the buses it tries to track, so horribly wrong. It’s extremely slow, and it spit errors constantly, “we couldn’t find this trip” and “connection error” being the most common. The apple watch app is a gimmick, never managed to make it work, not even once. This company is not good for transport and it’s definitely not good making apps. The only thing they are good for, is to raise ticket prices in the middle of a cost of living crisis to add more misery to people. They will probably paste a template response here crying about gas prices or something, but when gas prices do come down, does this company lower the ticket prices? Exactly. Also the app force closes continuously, it is really pathetic. And I sincerely hope the “we cant find this trip” error is just due to this being a poorly made app by a developer team that doesn’t care about anything, because if its true that this company can’t find this trip, in the era of GPS, 5G and CCTV, they can’t find a whole double decker full of people, thats very scary. Its really scary for the security of employees and passengers that HQ cant find this trip.
If you’re looking for accuracy or reliability please chose another app. This app is so inaccurate, misleading and I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been late because of incorrect ‘live departure’ times. So frustrating. Buses are appearing and disappearing after a couples of times having to refresh the waiting times. Then it dropped again. I see the bus colony but the app says no bus is expected. Bus 300 has been added to replace bus 35 and after weeks in operation the app does not recognise this route and buss 300 is no where to be found!!! We are talking about Edinburgh capital city’s main transport app! It’s bellow the standard of any other transport apps I have used in capitals around the world. Takes ages to load and often doesn’t recognise your location. Get it fixed! Tip for people: use google where you can see true live reflection of live departures and ALL buses included (300 route) as well! This review goes right on apple store. I doubt you’ll do anything about this but at least people can know and use other reliable alternatives!! Embarrassing!

Paul Halford

Lothian Buses has launched a new passenger travel planning app created by UrbanThings.

The Lothian Bus and Tram app will show journey information for both Lothian Buses and Edinburgh Trams.

It builds on the multi-operator ticketing scheme that was already in place following collaboration between the two operators .

The app will include live ticketing, journey planning, real-time information, dynamic mapping, precise travel directions, targeted disruption information and travel alerts.

In a move that begins a partnership between Lothian Buses and UrbanThings , it will feature information for 70 services and more than 700 buses in the Scottish capital.

Adam Toone, CEO of UrbanThings, says: “We are really delighted to introduce the new Lothian app. Our primary goal remains to empower passengers with a seamless platform while promoting the use of shared transport.

With features such as convenient smartcard registration, mobile ticketing, and live journey planning, we are confident that this app will significantly enhance the travel experience in Edinburgh.”

Sarah Boyd, Lothian Managing Director adds: “With over 2 million customer journeys per week, we are pleased to introduce our new bus and tram app, which will enhance the travel experience for residents and visitors to Edinburgh and the Lothians.

“Bringing together journey planning and ticketing in one place will support seamless, integrated travel across both our bus and tram network with advanced accessibility features providing a more inclusive service for all of our customers.”

Edinburgh Public Buses

Getting around Edinburgh

Edinburgh public buses.

The public buses are the best way  and sometimes the only way of getting to the city centre from the outskirts . Buses run 24 hours a day and are extremely frequent.

Various companies

Edinburgh has several bus companies that run through the heart of the city, but the most important are Lothian and First . Both companies share the same bus stops, but the bus numbers are different and each company has its own ticket.

Lothian is the dominant city operator with most buses and routes , while First, has fewer bus routes and focuses on the city's outskirts.

If you’re not going to buy a day-ticket, then you won’t have to worry about what bus you take. However, if you decide to stay a little further away from the centre and need to buy a day-ticket, it’s important to see which bus line runs closest to your accommodation. Normally, the best option is to get a Lothian day-ticket, but it will depend on where you're staying.

First and Lothian have similar prices but not exactly the same. For example:

  • Single-journey adult ticket : A First ticket costs from £ 1.80 ( US$ 2.30) (depends on the distance of your trip), and a Lothian ticket is £ 1.70 ( US$ 2.20).
  • Single-journey child ticket : Both Lothian and First single tickets cost £ 0.90 ( US$ 1.20).
  • Lothian adult DAYticket : Lothian offers unlimited use of their buses and Edinburgh trams for one day for £ 4.50 ( US$ 5.80). First doesn't offer this type of ticket.
  • Lothian child DAYticket : £ 2.20 ( US$ 2.80).
  • Lothian Adult Airport DAYticket : This ticket offers unlimited use of Lothian buses and trams and includes travel to and from Edinburgh Airport for one day for £ 9 ( US$ 11.50). First buses do not run to the airport.
  • Lothian Child Airport DAYticket :  £ 4.50 ( US$ 5.80).

Lothian and First both allow its passengers to purchase the tickets on the bus.

Note that a Lothian DAYticket is not valid on the night buses or on the Airlink (service 100) to Edinburgh Airport .

Exact change

If you want to purchase your single, return or day-ticket from the bus driver you have to have the correct fare as the drivers cannot give you any change . The tickets are bought from small ticket vending machines on the bus, so remember to save your change for these occasions .

The day buses run from 6 am until midnight . Outside this schedule, Edinburgh has night buses (the N lines).

Lothian have today (Wednesday 5 June) announced changes to fares in west Edinburgh which will see price reductions for many customers from Sunday 30 June.

The change will see the Lothian Country ‘cityWEST’ zone become an extension of the ‘city’ fares zone, with Adult single tickets for Queensferry, Newbridge & Dalmahoy to Edinburgh city centre reduced to £2.00.

Lothian DAYticket, LATEticket, Family DAYticket and countryWEST DAYticket will now also be valid in cityWEST zones.

Sarah Boyd, Managing Director for Lothian said: “These changes have only been made possible as a result of successful and sustained customer growth on our Lothian Country network. The implementation of this change will help improve boarding speeds and end to end journey times on our Service 43, where customer numbers have grown over 50% since its launch in 2017.”

The company have also announced new services for west Edinburgh, following a procurement exercise and successful contract awards by City of Edinburgh Council from the same date (Sunday 30 June).

Edinburgh buses: New service for Ratho will still leave village in 'a bus wilderness'

R esidents living in one of Edinburgh’s most isolated communities say their village will remain a “bus wilderness” despite new subsidised services being agreed by the council.

Lothian Buses has been awarded a contract for a route between The Gyle and Hermiston park and ride via Ratho – leaving long-standing pleas for a direct Ratho to city centre service unanswered. The new service will replace the existing 20 which will be withdrawn by McGill’s on July 14.

Stacey O’Flaherty from Ratho Community Council said the outcome of the council’s tendering process “leaves Ratho in a bus wilderness, still without a direct bus service to Edinburgh city centre”.

This is despite “unstinting efforts” of the community council’s bus working group over the last two years, which have included “identifying business stakeholders who are keen to see improved services, regular lobbying and the provision of possible timetables to include a current staff shuttle service”.

Ms O’Flaherty was addressing councillors at the council’s transport committee, where five new contracts for supported buses for west Edinburgh were awarded on Thursday, May 23. Alongside the new route serving Ratho, Lothian will run Queensferry to The Gyle, Cramond to Balerno and Wester Hailes to Chesser, while Handicabs Lothian will operate a service between The Gyle and Clermiston.

The council tendered for a direct city centre bus but said the cost was “beyond” the available £1.1m budget. The agreed route is intended to attract more passengers as it offers onward tram links at The Gyle and bus services at Hermiston.

However Ms O’Flaherty called it a “waste of public money” which would “permanently cut” the frequency of buses from half hourly to hourly.

She said the return journey in both directions would require up to a 60-minute wait. “Hermiston is seen as even less attractive place to wait at night than Edinburgh Park or Gyle to return to the village, and will not grow patronage,” she said.

“The route was proposed as a possible option early in the process by the council – we are unclear how it has been developed or by who – and was firmly rejected by the working group at that time, approximately 18 months ago.  The proposed route does not support social and economic inclusion, is not safe for young or vulnerable persons, and will not move the modal shift needle, except possibly in reverse as Ratho residents who can afford a car will almost certainly use it.”

She added: “Many councillors have given fulsome support to our campaign for a direct bus service over the last two years – to them go our grateful thanks.  We and they need not have bothered, as the route changes appear to have been decided on behind closed doors before the process even started.”

Transport convener Scott Arthur said: “It’s worth remembering what people in Ratho have been through over the last couple of years, so their frustrations are understandable – they had threats of services being completely lost; at one point, buses were just not turning up. But now they’re being connected into the city by one of the UK’s best bus companies.”
