I love New York. I’ve been going there since 2004 and have lived there twice, and I do a lot of shows there. The thing that first gets you about New York – it just hits you that you are in the most famous city in the world, and it all looks so familiar. You’re looking around at what you’ve seen on TV a hundred times.

Nothing compares to New York in terms of the movies. There’s more New York on TV and in films than any other city, I think. You’re walking around and you feel like you’re in a Woody Allen movie or  Sex and the City  or  The Sopranos . One minute you’re in  Breakfast at Tiffany’s  and the next  Ghostbusters .

The last time I was in New York was in 2020 for live shows. When I’m in New York, I move around a bit because I’ve got a lot of fans all over. I do a lot of shows on Long Island, in Brooklyn, over in New Jersey. I have spent a lot of time in the different boroughs. Brooklyn is a really hip circuit. Every time I go, it just gets better. But Manhattan is definitely my favourite. The West Village is probably my favourite in the whole area, or around there.

I’m a massive food lover, so when I arrive in New York, I will immediately head out to restaurants. I have eaten at a lot of the restaurants there and found a lot of really cool places, including hidden bars. I love them so much. In my home in Melbourne I have an underground bar – it’s modelled on a lot of the bars that I’ve seen in Chicago and New York.

I have several favourite bars and restaurants in New York. The restaurant of Beauty & Essex , on Essex Street, is great. Basically, you walk into a pawn shop and in the top left-hand corner there is a massive door. Behind that door and downstairs is an amazing restaurant.

Another amazing one is La Esquina . You enter that via a taco stand. There’s a door at the back of the shop and you go down the stairs, through the kitchen to a bar with probably the largest collection of tequila in the world and it’s also an amazing Mexican restaurant.

Another hidden bar is called Please Don’t Tell , which is kind of ironic, because that’s how people find out. It’s attached to a hotdog stand called Crif Dogs, and to get into it you have to walk into a phone box and pick up the phone and then all of a sudden, the door opens up and you’re in this amazing bar.

There’s a selection of places that I need to go to every time I’m in New York. One of them is Katz’s Delicatessen . I like having the pastrami sandwich. It was made famous from that movie  When Harry Met Sally . You can actually go and sit at the table and re-enact the scene with Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal.

New York is definitely a city that one must see. It’s not for everybody. Some friends have been and it freaks them out for the first few days – it’s much too big, there’s too much going on. I just love it, though.

I have played Carnegie Hall, and a lot of big theatres in Brooklyn. I have cast members from  The Sopranos  come and see my shows. I have done a lot of radio in the US, syndicated to 350 million people.

I just love to travel. I love seeing how the other 95 per cent of the world live. It makes you realise how lucky we are in Australia, and where you fit into this world.

I love bigger cities like London, Paris and Istanbul. I’ve done a lot of travelling in my time, not just for work. I’ll go to Palestine on my own, or I’ll go to Jerusalem on my own, or to Morocco. But New York really changed me in that way that I felt: “You know what? I’ve made it here, I can make it anywhere.”

I am about to tour Australia and then I’ll do Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto, New York, New Jersey, Los Angeles and San Francisco, and then the tour continues all through Europe and to South Africa. My wife and my son will come with me on tour in the US and Canada. I cannot wait.
