Chemistry is an odd thing. Some bands seem to need the right combination of very specific people playing in order to be worth a damn, while some are able to just create it out of thin air whenever it’s needed. With 26 past members and only one founding member still playing in the band, Iced Earth are unquestionably one of the latter bands. While the accusation that they can’t call themselves the same band that formed in Tampa, Florida 1985 remains ever-present and somewhat accurate, Iced Earth guitarist and songwriter Jon Schaffer seems to be able to create great album after great album with every line-up that he puts together, and it goes without saying that with every line-up comes an utterly astonishing live show. The combination of the grit and energy of thrash metal with the flights of fancy of power metal is one that will always sound amazing live and Iced Earth never disappoint whoever is playing onstage. Each and every one of the performers on stage can cycle through thirty years and eleven studio albums worth of thunderous, complex and intelligent heavy metal like they were born to do it. Which is just as well since more often than not they do it for two and a half hours a night, which is a long time to spend with any band but Iced Earth are worth every moment. They might just be the perfect synthesis of everything ridiculous, awesome and life affirming about heavy metal, so it goes without saying that seeing them tear it up live is an unforgettable experience.

I think I might own one Iced Earth album although I can't recall if I played it more than once. That is the sort of mindset I had going in, but I am glad I did. They started off with some newer heavier hitting material before doing back catalog stuff which set the tone well for me to get into them. Some of the aspects I seriously appreciate from them live is that whoever did the live mixing was spot f'ing on. The drums were crushing and that dude can play. The guitar tones did the opposite of a lot of shows, under emphasizing the upper mids a tad while boosting the lower mids to give it some weight without overdoing it so you could still hear all the harmonies clearly. The vocalist was also not over prominent. The only thing I would ding was the vocalist was using some sort of vocal effects which was mildly annoying. Still thought the whole of the show was pretty great and they were really into it. Best song for me was Seven Headed Whore. 8/10

About iced earth.

Iced Earth is an American heavy metal band from Tampa, Florida. It was formed in 1985 under the name Purgatory by guitarist and main songwriter Jon Schaffer and original drummer Greg Seymour. Iced Earth released their debut album in 1990 and have since released eleven studio albums, four EPs, three compilations, three box sets, three live albums and one cover album. After releasing their first two studio albums in 1990 and 1991, respectively, Iced Earth took a three-year layoff from 1992 to 1995, after which the band returned with new lead vocalist Matt Barlow. Iced Earth went on to release four studio albums with Barlow between 1995 and 2001, respectively; 1995's Burnt Offerings, 1996's The Dark Saga, 1998's Something Wicked This Way Comes and 2001's Horror Show. After Horror Show, Barlow quit the band and joined the police force, while Iced Earth continued on with Tim "Ripper" Owens, of Judas Priest fame, on vocals. With Owens, the band released two studio albums (2004's The Glorious Burden and 2007's Framing Armageddon). In late 2007, Matt Barlow rejoined the band. Iced Earth recorded the album The Crucible of Man with Barlow in 2008. In 2011 Barlow left the band again. Later that year, Into Eternity frontman Stu Block became Iced Earth's new lead vocalist. Dystopia, Block's first album with the group, was released in October 2011. It received a positive response; some critics called Dystopia one of Iced Earth's best albums. Block's second album with the group, Plagues of Babylon, was released in January 2014. Before arriving at their current lineup, Iced Earth has had numerous line-up changes, with founder Jon Schaffer staying as the last remaining member. As of 2013, there have been over twenty musicians in and out of Iced Earth since its formation in 1985 (see: List of Iced Earth band members for more details). Currently, the band is composed of rhythm guitarist Jon Schaffer, lead guitarist Jake Dreyer, singer Stu Block, bassist Luke Appleton and drummer Brent Smedley.

Iced Earth's guitarist Jon Schaffer reveals the stories behind the songs on his new album Incorruptible

For the best part of 30 years, Florida metal heavyweights Iced Earth have been unleashing their brand of riffy power metal on legions headbangers around the world. Throughout their tenure, one man has remained a constant, lead guitarist Jon Schaffer. And as the band release their twelfth studio album Incorruptible on Century Media, we sat down with Jon to get the skinny the stories behind the music. From pirates to Vikings to Native Americans, there’s a lot going on…

Great Heathen Army

“This was Stu’s idea for a song – the Viking Norse mythology resonates pretty deep within him, and when he said it was one of the directions he wanted to go in lyrically I totally got behind that. I knew early on it was going to be an opener for the album. To me it’s a pretty typical Iced Earth track; it’s got all the elements that we’re known for, it’s fast and melodic. The chorus part had a very victorious feeling, but when I added this lead guitar melody in there it adds some tragedy to it.”

“Our pirate song! This was a song I’ve wanted to do for a while and it was a challenge because it’s quite a history to tell in a four and a half/five minute song, but I think I pulled it off and it really worked out well. I’ve got a feeling it’s going to be one of the songs that will always be in the setlist. Luke (Appleton, bassist) came up with the intro, which is perfect musically, and Stu’s vocal performance is amazing on it – he really got into character. It’s full of vitriol, this isn’t a ‘Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum’ pirate song, this is heavy, it’s angry, and there’s a definite rage against the empire. I guess it’s a kind of common thread with me in general ha ha.”

“In Native American mythology, when a raven comes into your life it’s a message from the spirit world. There’s a really long story behind this one, but when you read the lyrics it’s all there. Over the next several years it’ll be one of the songs where people say it helped them with some heavy shit.”

“This was the last song I wrote lyrics for. I started with the idea of going in a completely different direction lyrically and the music kept pushing me somewhere else, and I made the decision on the Headbanger’s Ball tour that I was going to change it, and when I got home from that I had four days until the guys showed up. It came quick, it’s not a long song, I recorded a demo of the vocals so Stu would have a guide. He listened to it and we went back and forth. It’s a tragic love story, I don’t know where the idea came from but I guess the music pulled me in that direction. It’s turning out to be a pretty popular song.”

Seven Headed Whore

“ Seven Headed Whore started with the title. I started thinking about the whore of Babylon, the book of Revelations, the apocalypse, so it’s my interpretation of that. I felt like the title warranted a blistering, kick-in-the-balls metal track, and that’s what we got.”

The Relic (Part 1)

“This is an original story that Stu came up with and he told me about on the phone. I said I had a piece of music that would work for it, and he said it was perfect. It was the first song I wrote for this album, the first full arrangement that I did, and nothing changed with that. It just worked.”

Ghost Dance (Awaken The Ancestors)

“The idea of doing a tribute to the Native American plight and their spirit has been bouncing around in my head for a while. It went through different working titles. It’s been a while since we’ve done an instrumental song, and it speaks volumes. You don’t have to have vocals or lyrics there, you can feel it, and I feel it’s a really cool tribute to the Native American spirit and it’s all over – it’s in the drums, the riffing, the melody. It’s all there.”

“It was Stu’s idea to write a song about our brotherhood and I thought that was a great idea. We’ve been through a lot together. People still look at him as the new guy and I think that’s gonna go on for a long time, but we’ve been through a lot of stuff. I’m certain that Stu’s done more shows with Iced Earth than all the other singers combined, and through that touring process we went through a lot together, and in our personal lives, and we’ve always stood strong by each other.”

“This was a piece of music that Luke sent me early, I thought it was cool, but I wasn’t really sure where to go lyrically. It ended up as an anti-bullying song, to inspire people to stand up for themselves and not be beaten or pushed into a corner. It should be inspiring for anybody who’s been through that and I think a lot of people have.”

Clear The Way (December 13, 1862)

“I thought about writing this for years; many years after my friend was killed I wrote this song. This has been there for at least 15 years and it’s a tribute to the Irish Brigade, more than it really is about The Battle Of Fredericksburg. Their sacrifice on that second day is pretty heavy. You think about guys fleeing the tyranny of their own country and heading to the United States, they’re looking for peace and prosperity, and they end up being recruited into the military as soon as they get off the ships – in the north and the south. Then on that fateful day in Fredericksburg they faced off against each other on the battlefield, the Confederates had the higher ground and the dominant position so the Union Irish Brigade just got slaughtered. I think 1200 started and 270-something finished, but as the Confederate Irish saw the flag of their countrymen come charging up the field, there were a lot of tears. It was pretty heavy. That’s the feeling I tried to channel in the music. It’s sombre but it has a certain glory to it all.”

ICED EARTH: European Tour Dates Announced!

ICED EARTH have announced the details of their upcoming European tour in support of their "The Glorious Burden" CD.

The band's ninth full-length album, "The Glorious Burden" will be released through SPV Records on January 13, 2004. To whet the fans' appetites until the full album is released, ICED EARTH are releasing a special four-song single for "The Reckoning (Don't Tread On Me)" on October 21 (nearly three months prior to "The Glorious Burden" 's street date). The single will contain the aforementioned song, as well as "Valley Forge" , "Hollow Man" , and "When The Eagle Cries (Unplugged)" . Adding to the "special" nature of this release, this version of "When The Eagle Cries" is exclusive to the single.

"The Glorious Burden" is ICED EARTH 's first release with singer Tim Owens (ex- JUDAS PRIEST ),who replaced Matt Barlow this past summer.
