Client Testimonials
I have hunted with Steve West and Steve's Outdoor Adventures for over 20 years. Steve has helped me achieve the Grand Slam of Sheep and I am on my way to a second slam with his expertise and help. I cannot tell you with adequate words what a wonderful and helpful person Steve West has been. He exemplifies honesty and integrity and I would not hesitate to book or refer a fellow hunter to him for help in booking a phenomenal hunt.
As a CEO of a defense engineering company I appreciate communications and accuracy. I have hunted domestically and internationally with lots of outfitters. Only a few were good communicators with professional contracts and a willingness to go beyond the receipt of payment. Steve West and the team at SOA made this a great experience and Steve personally helped with the challenges associated with COVID-19. We were very pleased and look forward to our next hunt with SOA!
I would like to thank you as a booking agent for picking a top notch outfitter for our dream hunt. I would also like to say that your Sonora outfitter was an excellent choice. The hunting guides and outfitter worked very hard for use during our stay. The food and drivers were excellent and very knowledgeable of the hunting grounds, and we felt safe at all times.

I was out scouting deer yesterday before buffalo hunters arrive and came across these 4 bull buffalo. I would classify as Trophy Bulls. Some bulls never get to SUPER TROPHY BULL class, no matter their age. Don't be fooled by age or weight alone. If I represent a bison as a SUPER TROPHY BULL, he's going to be AWESOME.

WHAT OUR HUNTERS SAY
Dustin, Rich and the entire Big Horn Outfitters team work their butts off to provide the best hunting experience for each client. These guys know where the animals are at, what they are doing and will work tirelessly to make sure every hunter gets an opportunity. When your hunt is over the lodging, food and accommodations are all second to none. I can't recommend these guys enough to anyone looking for a high-quality Western hunt.
Justin Zarr
I have been on several guided hunts before and have been fortunate enough to have taken game on all of them. This hunt, by far, was my most successful. Big Horn Outfitters is a First Class operation from start to finish. Unmatched hospitality, great food, guide knowledge, and most importantly the game was plentiful and of great quality. Big Horn Outfitters treated us like family and went out of their way to ensure we had a great experience.
I can’t say enough about the experience I had with Big Horn Outfitters. My partner and I each shot a bull with our bows, but far more important was the great time we had doing it. The guides were hard working, enjoyable to be with and run a first class operation in every way. I have been on many western hunts over the last 20 years and Big Horn Outfitters is by far the best I have ever experienced. I highly recommend them!

Hunting Experiences
Antelope Hunting - Do not let the ease of locating antelope fool you. The challenge is getting into reasonable shooting distance of these exceptionally wary critters, and then connecting with a clean, long-range kill shot on a target that is considerably smaller than your typical whitetail buck. Find a hunt...
Buffalo Hunting - Their primary defense is the their sense of smell, a whiff of human odor will sometimes send them running, possibly for miles. For this reason, the spot and stalk hunter should plan his approach according to the wind. Sound isn’t nearly so important, as buffalo herds make a lot of noise and the animals aren’t really sensitive to it. Find a hunt..
White Tail Deer Hunting - If you find a tight pinch point with several trails converging and lines of rubs radiating in multiple directions, you have located a terrific November hunting location. Pick several trees in the area that could be hunted from various wind directions and plan an access route that can get you into place well before daylight. These locations can produce action at any time of day, so plan to maintain your vigil from daylight ‘til dark. Find a hunt...
More Hunting Opportunities
Turkey Hunting - Scouting turkeys in cover often resembles a shed hunt: walking through dense areas, staring at the ground. Turkey scratching is pretty obvious, and when you encounter a spot where birds are really working, then you know you’re into something good. Identifying a few areas that they’ll work through the day gives you options for all-day hunting, meaning you won’t have to post up on a field edge and cross your fingers. Find a hunt...
Pheasant Hunting - Take that for what it’s worth, and remember that while we don’t have all-time high pheasant numbers, populations across the core range are strong and forecasted to get better. All told, it’s a good time to be a pheasant hunter. Find a hunt...

Dreaming of a destination big-game hunt? Some tips for planning a successful trip
M any hunters dream of hunts far out of state for game foreign to their own stomping grounds. These are wonderful experiences, chances to see new parts of the world, learn more about hunting and meet fellow sportsmen.
But whether you're planning that trip of a lifetime on an outfitted hunt or scheming a do-it-yourself adventure, significant planning is necessary to not only be successful in your pursuit but also just to get there in one piece.
While certainly many others have traveled more often and farther than me, I've lived my share of DIY and guided deals across the country. Here are some of my suggestions if your daydreams are materializing into realities far from home.
Start applying for preference points now
Preference points are necessary to land limited permits for western and northeastern big-game hunting. For some species, it'll require years of accumulated points before a successful permit is drawn. I keep a notebook to track application dates and stockpile necessary points that will skip me to the head of the line when I'm ready to embark on a journey. Most applications require a small fee, but it's a minor investment when needing to pull a coveted permit.
Hunting: Is a legal Florida bear-hunting discussion right around the corner? | Ian Nance
Be honest about your budget
The sticker shock and financial realities of outfitted affairs are the biggest barriers to entry here, but if you evaluate the costs of conducting and hosting successful hunts, there is typically tremendous value. What surprises people on most any destination hunt are the "other" costs. Non-resident hunting licenses. Travel expenses. New gear. Shipping trophies. Airport bar tabs. Some are variable or can be split with friends while others can't, but be cognizant when setting your budget.
Be honest about your time
I enjoy distant turkey and waterfowl hunts because they’re typically three-day affairs, and over that period, routinely successful. In general, though, big-game hunts require more dedication. Shy of trophy-rich locales like south Texas, I wouldn’t spend less than four days on a hunt for a mature whitetail , and no less than a week for elk, or you’ll short-change your opportunity for success, with or without a guide.
Freshwater fishing: Bass are the top catch in Polk as the fish head to spawn
Research outfitters
Don't be afraid of seeking opinions about outfitters. It's daunting to PayPal a deposit to a stranger for a hunt in an alien land, so perform your due diligence. Also, outfitters can be absolutely allergic to returning phone calls and emails. If you get one on the phone, have all of your questions prepared. Once you book, you might not talk to the fellow again until baggage claim.
Transportation concerns
Flying with firearms is straightforward, if you follow airline policy and address staff like they're the Soup Nazi. Some outfitters will offer transportation to and from the airport, but rental cars are often involved. In Maryland, I was inadvertently rented an EV. After blasting the rental company on social media and filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, my restitution was simply another lesson about reading the fine print and lingering anxiety over frantically seeking a charging station among the semi-rural towns of the Eastern Shore.
And that's the point here: Hunting dreams are grand, and all hunters should partake if so moved. But the Devil lingers in the details of planning.

Thirty years after Beverly Hills Cop III and 40 years after the franchise made its debut, Eddie Murphy , Judge Reinhold and John Ashton are back for a fourth film.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F sees Murphy’s Detective Axel Foley return to Beverly Hills after his daughter’s (played by Taylour Paige) life is threatened, teaming up with her ex-boyfriend ( Joseph Gordon-Levitt ) and his old pals John Taggart (Ashton) and Billy Rosewood (Reinhold).

“We wanted to use the first one as a template, to be so lucky to reach that level, so that’s what we were after,” Reinhold told The Hollywood Reporter at the film’s Beverly Hills premiere on Thursday. “The night that all three of us were in the unmarked car [in the new movie] was the first time we’d seen each other in years. We were two blocks from the original location downtown, the original one in 1984, and the chemistry between the three of us was just wild. It’s like we picked up where we left off.”
He added that the original group of actors — which also includes returning stars Paul Reiser and Bronson Pinchot — have kept in touch throughout the years, and he has remained particularly close to Murphy.
“Eddie probably wouldn’t want anybody to know this but he’s an avid duck hunter, we go duck hunting every year up in Minnesota,” Reinhold revealed, joking, “He’s got a lot of stuffed ducks that he’s not allowed to keep around the house. He has a duck room.”
Throughout the film’s press tour, Murphy has admitted that he noticed the difference in doing an action movie in his 60s versus in his 20s when the franchise began, but director Mark Molloy teased that his approach was, “I just pretended like he was 25 and made him do it.”

Gordon-Levitt and Kevin Bacon are among the film’s two new additions, and both sang the praises of Murphy’s improvisational style.
“The script was great, but he’s making stuff up all the time and I love just throwing it back to him,” Gordon-Levitt said at the premiere, as Bacon added, “I’m not an improv-er, I’m not a comic genius like Eddie is, but I really like the fact that it keeps me on my toes when he is very relaxed, very present. When you’re improv-ing, if you’re a good improv-er, I think, you have to listen and watch and see what the other person is doing. I have to do that now because I know anything is going to come at me, so that’s cool, man, I like that.”
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F starts streaming on Netflix on July 3.

Texas on map, about hunting in texas.
At 261,797 square miles, Texas, the Lone Star State, is second only to Alaska in size. Possessing enormous natural resources, Texas is a major agricultural state and an industrial giant, leading all other states in such categories as oil, cattle, sheep, and cotton. Most hunting in Texas is done on private land, primarily on large ranches that may be leased by outfitters or individuals, or hunted with the permission of the landowner. Texans are avid and enthusiastic hunters. The state is particularly famous for its large-antlered white-tailed deer, but hunters can also pursue alligators, javelinas, wild pigs, mule deer, pronghorn, squirrels, turkeys, waterfowl, and upland birds, especially quail. In addition, many Texas ranches have large populations of imported non-native animals, including nilgai, axis deer, blackbuck, aoudad, and even a wide variety of African game such as zebras and oryx. In most cases these exotic animals can be hunted year-round on private land. These ranches provide a unique opportunity for hunters to pursue animals that are native to Africa and Asia at a relatively low cost and without having to leave the U.S. Many, but not all, ranches in Texas are high-fenced, especially those with exotic species. Much of Texas is brushy and thick, making for challenging hunting despite the large and abundant game populations. For this reason, hunting, especially for whitetails, is often done from permanent blinds, and baiting is popular, especially with the use of automatic feeders, which are legal in the state. Texas has an overabundance of feral hogs, and because they are unprotected, exotic, non-game animals, they may be taken by any means or methods at any time of year. There are no seasons or bag limits, however a hunting license and landowner permission are required to hunt them. Texas requires 400 square inches of fluorescent orange to be worn by all hunters when hunting on public hunting grounds. Orange is not required on private land, but is encouraged. A Texas hunting license is required for hunting any species in the state. Learn more about Texas hunting from the Texas Department of Parks & Wildlife: http://tpwd.texas.gov/huntwild/hunt/ .

Father's Day: No better place to bond with family than in the outdoors
Conversations, first encounters and quiet times are memories parents are making with their kids in the outdoors.
With Father’s Day on Sunday, it’s a great time for dads, like the Christopher Smiley and Daniel Hoffman families, to reflect on why it’s important to introduce young people to fishing, camping and hunting.
Smiley, of Falls Creek, Jefferson County, is fortunate to be able to be outdoors with his father, Robert, and also with his children.
“We did everything,” Smiley said about his childhood hunting and fishing. He remembers as a boy learning to hunt groundhogs with his dad. “I couldn’t wait for him to get home at 3 o’clock from work. I wanted to go every single night, even though I wasn’t the one pulling the trigger, but just tagging along."
He remembers trout fishing with his dad and brother on Wolf Creek.
“That was our go-to every first day (of trout season),” he said.
More: Porcupines are expanding to new parts of Pennsylvania, here's where
The family also hunts together and he remembers learning to hunt in small game season looking for squirrels.
“The thing that stood out the most with my dad, definitely right off the bat, he taught me patience," he said. "He didn’t wander through the woods looking for squirrels. We would sit down in a beech tree grove or along the edge of a cornfield. That was probably the No. 1 thing that my dad was very stern on was patience."
Later he enjoyed deer hunting with the family including his uncle Pat.
“He was a go-getter,” he said about sneaking and still hunting.
By the end of his high school years, Smiley got into turkey hunting which is something he enjoys each year.
He’s become an avid archer, getting a buck with his bow for more than 20 consecutive years.
“I’m super grateful that my dad is an outdoorsman,” he said.
Now, 47, he’s passing on his passion for the outdoors with his wife, Stacey, his stepchildren and daughters, Aniela Cortina, 21, Aiden Cortina, 18, Samantha Smiley, 19, and Breanna Smiley, 16.
He said the mentored youth fishing and hunting opportunities in Pennsylvania have been something the family has enjoyed over the years.
He would take the kids fishing on the trout waters.
“I remember one morning, my daughter Breanna, our youngest, sitting on the bank with her hat over her head. It was like a quarter after 9, an hour and 15 minutes into it, and she said, ‘Dad, I’m tired.’ She caught almost 80 trout in an hour and 15 minutes,” he said. "They just stocked the daylights out of it there in Brockway and it was kids only.
“They all enjoy fishing,” he said about the four kids who are now young adults.
Smiley said his role is to be there for them to answer questions and help them learn what to do.
“The kids are really into it,” he said.
He also introduced them to hunting and they have been successful in taking numerous deer and turkeys. He remembers Aiden’s first turkey. Early in the hunt, a large skunk walked directly toward them.
“It came right to us and I told him to not move a muscle. It came right to our feet. I just kind of wiggled my ankle a bit and I think it got the idea we weren’t supposed to be there and it turned and went back up its way. We dodged a big bullet there,” he said about not getting sprayed.
About 20 minutes later Smiley called in a gobbler right to his stepson who made a good shot.
This past year was another milestone as his daughter Samantha called him saying she just got a deer on her own.
“That put the icing on a lot of cakes,” he said. “It was really neat to get that call. It makes me proud.”
Now the grandfather, father and children spend time in the woods together.
His dad is 71, and he reflects on the memories of the past and those yet to come.
“I’m in that timeframe where just sitting out in the woods, for (his dad Robert) to get up every morning and be able to go out is all I look forward to. Whether we get something, is icing on the cake,” he said.
“My Father’s Day is him being able to get up and say, ‘Hey, I’ll be down to your house at 5:15 and I’ll pick you up.’ That means the world to me whether we get something or not,” Smiley said.
Samantha got a turkey on the last day of the spring gobbler season and she was hunting with her dad and granddad.
“He was more pumped and stoked about her shooting another big one like that. Very unselfish my dad is,” the son recalled.
Jimbo and Dan Hoffman
Jim “Jimbo” Hoffman of Industry, Beaver County, said his dad, Daniel “Dan,” 68, has always been his best fishing partner.
“We used to have a camp in upstate in New York and we used to do a lot of bass fishing, perch fishing, pickerel, that kind of stuff. I did that from a very young age, I would guess maybe 4 years old, 3 years old,” he said. “That just really got me hooked, no pun intended."
Now 38, Hoffman and his father take advantage of their fishing boat and spend time fishing for muskies and a variety of bass.
“We fish probably over 100 days a year on average,” he said. “We do a lot at the Pymatuning, we’ve done a lot on the Ohio River, the Beaver River, we bounce around,” he said adding Kinzua Reservoir, Lake Erie and Lake Wilhelm. “Great memories with him. It’s definitely our passion. He’s definitely my No. 1 fishing buddy, my best fishing partner. I definitely wouldn’t trade him for anybody.”
Over the years they have been able to catch some large fish including their goal of muskellunge that are at least 50 inches long. The father has caught two that just broke 50 inches and the son has one, as well. All three were caught and released on the Pymatuning Reservoir.
“I was with him for both of those,” he said about his dad’s trophy catches.
When his dad hooked on to that first 50-inch fish in 2022, the son was really excited.
“Being it was your dad just makes it 100 times better. It’s amazing to see my dad reel that giant fish in. It’s indescribable. All that determination of years and years we wanted to get that 50 and he was the first one for us. That was probably my best fishing memory ever. That trumps my 50 all day long."
They enjoy spending time together on their boat.
“We’ve had heartfelt discussions down to just your normal cracking jokes at each other,” he said. “We just have a great time out there together. We are definitely best friends and that has a lot to do with it.”
One of the things he remembers his dad saying is, "'If I catch a fish, it’s a bonus.' Basically, he means you have to enjoy the small things in life and take the time, enjoy nature and the company you’re with.”
His father, Dan of New Brighton, Beaver County, said the feelings are mutual about his son and he looks forward to their annual father-son camping trips.
“It just gave us a good bonding experience,” he said. “When we got a boat, it’s just been fish, fish, fish ever since.”
Fishing provides quiet times where conversations just begin.
“There’s a real closeness. We feel like we can say anything to each other. We’re that close. We talk about life, our problems, our good things," he said.
Their adventures have led to a lot of good memories that it’s difficult to name a favorite.
“I would say it’s when we bought our first boat,” he said. “That really started our outdoor experience more than anything."
The father remembers helping his son learn how to fish and now the roles are starting to reverse.
“The student has become the teacher, so to speak,” he said.
The elder Hoffman encourages parents to get their kids outdoors. “It gets them away from the electronics. It gives you a chance to bond with your son and that to me was the most important,” he said. “You just become very close.”

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.
Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.
Belfry and Neighbouring Churches
Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.
To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.
Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.
Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.
Tsaritsa's Chambers
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.
At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.
Palace of Tsar Alexis
The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
