Where Two or Three Are Gathered: CPR Annual Historical Black College Tour

The HBCU “Where Two or Three Are Gathered SummerCollege Tour” provides African-American students, with a small but mighty unique learning opportunity to visit multiple college campuses and site visits in a single trip. These multi-campus summer college tours give students a solid understanding of the history, culture, and traditions that have shaped the schools’ collective legacy, and experiences that will help them choose the right HBCU. To date, the tours have included no more than six people so as to keep the experiences intimate and personalized. Pre tour experiences include viewing the documentary, “Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Historically Black Colleges and Universities” and Historical Black Colleges Poster Research. Other preparatory opportunities have included a Historical Black Colleges President’s Panel highlighting Dr. Willie Larkin former President of Grambling State, Dr. David Wilson President of Morgan State, Dr. Jerald Woolfolk President of Lincoln University and Dr. Cynthia Warrick President of Stillman College where students were invited to hear and ask questions first-hand from these powerful leaders about educational opportunities at their institutions. The tour experience also provides a source of self-reliance and self-development for many students. This educational endeavor introduces Middle and High School students to college campus life and provides them with firsthand curriculum information, entrance requirements, financial aid and scholarship resources by offering students the opportunity to speak directly with college students and other officials. Aspiring college students are exposed to the world of historically Black Colleges and Universities in order to promote increased college attendance at these institutions of higher learning.

One by one, several of the main characters of what many consider the best representation of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in television history made their way into the Marcus Bar & Grille on Wednesday night. 

Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Cree Summer, Dawnn Lewis, Darryl M. Bell, Charnele Brown and Glynn Turman were at the Old Fourth Ward restaurant for a tip-off dinner for a national HBCU tour in honor of the impact that iconic NBC television series, A Different World, had on generations of Black youth.

For many people, Black or not, A Different World  and the fictional Hillman College was their first look at an HBCU campus, and most importantly, the culture, sound, and feel of an HBCU. 

The first stop on the  A Different World HBCU College Tour , which is presented by  Cisco  and sponsored by  Wells Fargo , is in Atlanta and begins tonight in the Atlanta University Center. The cast will meet with students, faculty and guests from Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, and Spelman College. The 10-stop tour will then move on to the nation’s capital at Howard University, and to Alabama at both Alabama State University and Tuskegee University in April. The remainder of the tour stops and dates will be announced at a later date, according to the tour’s I nstagram page  and  website .

The first episode of the show, which was created by Bill Cosby and producers Susan Fales and Debbie Allen, aired on Sept. 24, 1987. Asked what the show’s legacy, impact on HBCUs, and this tour mean to him and the rest of the cast, Bell, who played Ron Johnson on the show, said it meant a lot. 

“It means everything to us. We’ve spent the better part of 35 years as the preeminent representation for HBCUs in film and television,” Bell said. “The number of engineers, lawyers, doctors, HBCU presidents that have come up to us and said, ‘I am who I am today because I went to an HBCU and watched A Different World . It’s what matters.”

The cast and the show remain synonymous with HBCUs decades after airing its final episode on July 9, 1993. Bell acknowledged that impact and seemingly timeless connection with people that weren’t even born when the show came on the air or went off the air. 

“For us to have the opportunity to carry that message to the next generation, it’s a blessing,” said Bell. “We want to get to as many schools as we can. That’s why we all do it.”

A Different World Reunion Tour: Celebrating Legacy and Education at HBCUs Across the Nation

Growing up in the 90’s, A Different World gave many of us a look into college life our families had never known. As a pre-teen I wondered what life would be like at ‘Hillman’ and years later graduated from college heavily influenced by the same television show that would shape my young mind. In a much-anticipated reunion, the beloved cast of the iconic college sitcom “A Different World” is embarking on a 10-city tour, celebrating the rich legacy of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) across the nation. This historic reunion comes 35 years after the show first aired, promising a nostalgic journey for fans and an impactful experience for students and communities alike.

According to a report by The Wrap, the tour will kick off on Feb. 29 in Atlanta, Georgia, a city renowned for its vibrant Black culture and home to several prominent HBCUs. Atlanta’s status as the “Black mecca” sets the perfect stage for the reunion, with its historic institutions like Clark Atlanta University, Spelman College, Morehouse College, and Morehouse School of Medicine comprising the Atlanta University Center—the first stop on the tour.

The star-studded cast includes Kadeem Hardison (Dwayne Cleofis Wayne), Darryl M. Bell (Ron Johnson), Charnele Brow (Kimberly Reese), Jasmine Guy (Whitley Marion Gilbert-Wayne), Glynn Turman (Colonel Bradford Taylor), and Sinbad (Walter Oakes). Joining them are “A Different World” producers Susan Fales and Debbie Allen, adding their expertise and insight to the tour.

The reunion tour is not just a celebration of the groundbreaking sitcom but also a platform to highlight the importance of higher education, particularly within the Black community. HBCUs have long been pillars of academic excellence, nurturing generations of students and playing a crucial role in shaping African American culture and history.

Throughout the tour, cast members and producers will engage with students, faculty, and local communities, sharing stories, insights, and behind-the-scenes anecdotes from their time on the show. From panel discussions to meet-and-greets, the tour promises a blend of entertainment, education, and inspiration.

For fans of “A Different World,” the reunion tour offers a unique opportunity to reconnect with beloved characters and relive memorable moments from the show. For students and HBCU communities, it’s a chance to celebrate their heritage, embrace their potential, and be inspired by the achievements of those who paved the way.

The inspiration they gave to a little black girl like myself who dreamed to be as smart as Kim and as loved as Whitley until it became true in real life. Through this reunion tour, they continue to champion the legacy of HBCUs and inspire future generations to pursue their dreams with passion and purpose.

'A Different World' cast reuniting for HBCU tour more than 35 years after premiere

The iconic sitcom ran for six seasons between 1987 and 1993.

The cast of "A Different World" is hitting the road for a 10-city reunion tour of various historically Black colleges and universities.

Taking place more than 35 years after the iconic sitcom's premiere, cast members Kadeem Hardison, Jasmine Guy, Darryl M. Bell, Dawnn Lewis, Cree Summer, Charnele Brown, Glynn Turman and Sinbad -- along with producer Susan Fales -- are reuniting for the tour.

Debbie Allen will also join in on the fun.

The tour will kick off Feb. 29 at the Atlanta University Center, home to Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College and Spelman College.

Other scheduled stops in April include Howard University in Washington, D.C., and both Alabama State University and Tuskegee University in Alabama.

More stops will be announced at a later date.

"A Different World" ran for six seasons between 1987 and 1993. It originally centered around Lisa Bonet's "The Cosby Show" character, Denise Huxtable, as she studied at Hillman College, a fictional HBCU. Her character departed after the first season and the show focused on other students at the school.

According to a press release, the tour isn't just about nostalgia -- it's about raising "awareness and enrollment for HBCUs nationwide."

The 9 HBCU Events You Need To Know About In 2024

H istorically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are one of the strongest forces in Black culture. Originally created due to Black students being shut out of white academic spaces, these institutions not only educated young adults, but also served as a space for community, networking and instilling cultural pride at a time when being Black in America was significantly harder than it is today. 

Today, there are 107 HBCUs scattered across the US , with over 228,000 students enrolled in them. Most people are aware of the longstanding schools like Howard University, Spelman College , Morehouse College, and Tuskegee University, but there are countless more across the North and South . And while these schools focus on their academics, the student body also enjoys the social aspect. From homecoming celebrations to a rich Divine Nine community, there’s plenty to do to connect with fellow HBCU students, alumni, and faculty. 

The school year may be technically over for most colleges right now, but that doesn’t mean that HBCU events aren’t still happening. Plus, with six more months remaining in 2024, there’s a full roster ahead when school reconvenes at the end of the summer.

Here are 9 HBCU events for entertainment, networking, and more that you should add to your calendar for 2024.

Blavity House Party — Nashville, TN

June is going to be a busy month and Blavity is kicking off the season with Blavity House Party. This two-day event is officially June 14th and 15th in Nashville, Tennessee but includes a “Warm-Up” on Thursday, June 13th and a “Farewell” on Sunday, June 16th. Designed to let students, alumnus and supporters blow off some steam, the music festival includes pop ups, brunches, marketplaces and more. 

Expect to enjoy a solid mix of newer and established artists on the main stage, including Dru Hill, Monica, Big Freedia, Afrofuture, Travis Porter and more. Check out the full show schedule or snag your passes on Blavity .

HBCU Design Challenge — Charlotte, NC

Black culture drives American culture and pop culture at large. The Durag Fest celebrates this fact and Juneteenth with a two-day event held in Charlotte, North Carolina on June 21st and 22nd. While the larger event is for the general culture, the HBCU Design Challenge is on the lineup. It is intended for participating HBCU students to design a durag that illustrates the significance of not just Juneteenth, but how the durag serves as a symbol to preserve and move the culture forward. Although submissions are now closed, guests can attend the event where the winner will be announced on June 21st. 

HBCU Philanthropy Symposium — National Harbor, MD

If you’re strictly focused on academic development and achievement, as well as preserving the legacy of HBCUs, then the HBCU Philanthropy Symposium should be on your shortlist. This four-day event will be held June 30th through July 3rd in National Harbor, Maryland. This event is geared more towards people in the administrative space as the emphasis is on overcoming challenges faced when building or expanding an institution’s philanthropic arm. This is a vital conversation since having a strong endowment or annual budget is what ensures that HBCU students have access to the best academic and post-collegiate opportunities. 

National Battle of the Bands — Houston, TX

In truth, there are a few different battle of the bands events that take place across the country. However, it’s understood that HBCU marching bands are undefeated when it comes to performance and especially showmanship. The National Battle of the Bands is presented by Pepsi and will take place in Houston, Texas the weekend of August 23rd. Along with the band showdown on Sunday, August 25th, the precursor lineup includes an entrepreneurial conference, strolls, community outreach, career fairs, and a fan fest experience.

Black College Football Hall of Fame Classic — Canton, OH

Football fans won’t want to miss the annual Black College Football Hall of Fame Classic . The event will be held over Labor Day weekend from Thursday, August 29th through Sunday September 1st in Canton, Ohio where the Black College Football Hall of Fame is located. This multi-pronged event combines football with tailgating, educational outreach to local elementary schools, a job fair, concerts, golf classics, community outreach and faith services. 

Circle City Classic — Indianapolis, IN

Now in its 40th year, the Circle City Classic is essentially an unofficial HBCU homecoming event held annually in Indianapolis, Indiana every fall. This year, the main event will be held Saturday, September 28th at Lucas Oil Stadium where North Carolina Central University will face off against Norfolk State University. Along with the title football game, other supporting events that weekend include parties, a coronation, various luncheons, and a parade. Circle City Classic is considered one of the premiere Midwestern HBCU events to attend. 

HBCU First Look Film Festival — Washington, D.C. 

Black filmmakers have proven why it’s important to have diversity behind and in front of the camera. The HBCU First Look Film Festival will take place in Washington, D.C. November 8th through the 10th and is designed to give film fans a chance to screen fresh new content that includes short, feature, animated, documentary, mobile, health & wellness, and family & faith categories. Along with the screenings, other key aspects of this festival include marketing and career development, networking opportunities, and symposiums. 

Year Round HBCU Events

While some HBCU events are limited engagements, more and more organizations are embracing touring functions. These events will make stops throughout the HBCU community, making it easier for people to attend them. 

The Big Homecoming

The Big Homecoming (TBH) is a traveling homecoming festival that piggybacks off of other popular HBCU events such as the Orange Blossom Classic in Miami, Florida or the Celebration Bowl in Atlanta. The TBH lineup often features popular, trending artists of the time, while also incorporating key pillars of the HBCU campus life like tailgating, marching bands, food and art. 

A Different World HBCU College Tour

Today’s HBCU students didn’t watch A Different World when it was in production. But the show is credited with shining a spotlight on the HBCU experience and introducing the importance of this vibrant academic community to countless Gen X and Millennial children. The reruns still play on broadcast television today. There’s plenty to love about Whitley, Kim, Dwayne Wayne, and the rest of the crew. This traveling college tour brings Hillman College to real HBCUs and also includes symposiums with the original cast. Future stops include Clark Atlanta University, Howard University, Spelman College, Morehouse College, Alabama State University, and Tuskegee University.

The 2024 CIAA Tournament Highlights Black Culture, Sports And The Impact Of HBCUs

Baltimore has long been an epicenter for Black culture. Its roots in abolitionism, the progression of jazz, and the Civil Rights movement, among others, only adds to the city’s undeniable contributions to American history. As the world slowly transitioned from the effects of a global pandemic in 2021, the Charm City added another layer to it’s rich story by bringing the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Tournament to the state of Maryland.

From February 26 – March 3, the renowned tournament returned to Baltimore for a series of events held at the newly renovated CFG Bank Arena. Outside of the bevy of activities that attendees can delve into, one of the most important aspects of CIAA Weekend is that everything is set to the backdrop of this beautiful coastal city. “Right now, Baltimore is having a major moment in the spotlight – our arts, culture, medical and tech industries are huge assets in our city’s appeal as a cultural destination,” says Al Hutchinson, President and CEO of Visit Baltimore. “As it relates to CIAA, our entire community has truly embraced the tournament in a way that energizes our local businesses and brings great energy to the CFG Bank Arena and beyond.”

It’s safe to say that now more than ever is the perfect time to plan a trip to this iconic location. For a taste of the city’s history, visitors can head to places such as the Reginald F. Lewis Museum , which has art and artifacts dating back to 1784, or cultural centers like the Maryland Center for History and Culture , or the Lillie Carroll Jackson Civil Rights Museum . As far as the event’s chronology, 2024 marks the 50th Anniversary of NCAA Division II, and the 20th Anniversary of the Mister and Miss CIAA Scholarship Competition and the tournament’s Ball Girl/Ball Boy Program. With these groundbreaking initiatives, the CIAA continues to use its influence to impact the next generation of athletes and entrepreneurs. 

Along with the 26 matches in this year’s Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament, the CIAA again offered fan-favorite events for all ages, including Fan Fest, Career Expo, The 8th Annual Samaritan’s Feet “Shoes of Hope” initiative, The John B. McClendon Jr. Hall of Fame Breakfast, and other exciting events. The CIAA also partnered with Visit Baltimore to offer the 3rd annual series of town halls and symposiums. Here, fans enjoyed the annual entertainment events happening during Tournament week such as the CIAA Legends of Hip Hop Party, CIAA High School and Greek Step Shows, CIAA Alumni party and others.

The family environment of CIAA makes it a destination for people from all walks of life, but especially graduates and attendees of Historically Black Colleges and Universities—better known as HBCUs. These institutions of higher learning were created to serve African Americans during a time when our options are limited. Now, people of color have been able to thrive in their respective careers with a degree from a prestigious HBCU. In recent years, these colleges have increased in popularity, and the CIAA uses its resources to further highlight them.

“It’s great to see a heightened emphasis on HBCUs and their importance in American society, especially over recent years, although I think that it is long overdue,” Hutchinson says. “HBCUs are crucial institutions for the general population as they contribute to the advancement of education and opportunity for historically marginalized communities while promoting social equity and diversity. These institutions also serve as champions of culture and heritage, preserving and celebrating the rich history and contributions of African Americans to the wider American experience.”

With hundreds of thousands of people flocking to Baltimore for CIAA, the city was able to boast its unique cuisine to the masses. During the weekend, Baltimore’s Black Owned Restaurant Tour commenced. This third edition of BORT intentionally aligned with the tournament’s dates, creating an opportunity to spotlight local black owned eateries while basketball fans were in town. Each night one or more restaurants hosted a specialty menu or event, and featured establishments such as Rooted Rotisserie , The Urban Oyster , Diasporan Soul , Papi Cuisine , and more.

After the games, parties, and heavy food consumption, visitors had plenty of places to choose from to lay their heads. Baltimore has long been home to a collection of boutique properties that are Black-owned and/or operated by leaders who infuse the local culture and history of the city into their locations. Hotel Revival stands as the city’s only boutique art hotel, The Ivy is Baltimore’s only black-owned luxury property, and Sagamore Pendry  in Fell’s Point is a luxury retreat with sweeping views of Baltimore’s inner harbor, a stunning waterfront pool, and a whiskey bar featuring locally distilled Sagamore Rye.

For many, CIAA weekend is an opportunity to connect with old acquaintances, bond under the universal umbrella of sports, and experience the history and culture of one of the country’s greatest cities. The beautiful thing about this tournament is that each year it can provide attendees with even more. “The CIAA tournament is one of the largest and most prestigious basketball tournaments in the country, and it’s an chance for anybody, whether you played or not, to come and experience something extremely special in the venue and outside the venue, but in the venue is the best place to start the experience by getting your tickets and watching these young people and their talent,” CIAA Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams tells ESSENCE. 

“I mean, there’s so much legacy that right in the venue, they’ll have an experience, but when they’re not in the venue, there’s so many things for anybody,” she continues. “It doesn’t matter what age you are, you definitely can be embedded in the CIAA family. And whether you went to an HBCU or not, it doesn’t matter. No matter if you’re black, white, red, or yellow, you’ll be a part of it if you come and experience what I know is greatness to this conference.”

Paul McCartney announces South America leg of 2024 ‘Got Back’ tour

Paul McCartney reviving the 'Got Back' tour in South America?

After cryptically teasing it, Paul McCartney and Co. will resume the “Got Back” tour in 2024 with a leg in South America.

In a social media post, Paul McCartney unveiled his 2024 South America tour plans. A live recording of the Beatles' “Get Back,” which inspired McCartney's tour name, plays in the background of a montage of the tour's past shows.

“Paul will bring his acclaimed ‘Got Back’ tour to South America later this year, with shows in Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, and Peru 🌎,” the post's caption read.

Five shows were announced for the tour that will visit Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, and Peru. Presales will take place on Friday, June 14.

Per McCartney's official website announcement , these shows will mark his first shows in the various countries in years. For example, he hasn't played in Montevideo since 2014 and Bueno Aires since 2019. He also hasn't been in Córdoba in eight years, Santiago in five years, and Lima in 10 years.

The “Got Back” tour

Beginning in April 2022, McCartney and his touring band kicked off the “Got Back” tour. He commenced the tour with a show in Spokane, Washington. He then played 15 more shows across North America before headlining the 2022 Glastonbury Festival.

In 2023, McCartney picked up the tour again with shows in Mexico and Brazil. This second leg of shows concluded on December 16, 2023.

The touring band consists of McCartney, Rusty Anderson, Brian Ray, Paul “Wix” Wickens, and Abe Laboriel Jr. They have been with McCartney since his 2002 tour, the “Driving Rain” tour. Additionally, McCartney tours with members of the Hot City Horns, Mike Davis, Kenji Fenton, and Paul Burton.

As for the setlist, McCartney takes fans on a three-hour journey through his discography. These include hits from his time with the Beatles and Wings. He also plays solo hits such as “Maybe I'm Amazed” and “Dance Tonight.”

Who is Paul McCartney?

Paul McCartney is best known for his time with the Beatles. While together, the Beatles released 13 studio albums from 1960-70.

After they broke up, McCartney instantly dove back into writing music. He released his first self-titled studio album, McCartney, in 1970. The following year, McCartney recorded Ram with his wife Linda as well as Wild Life with Wings.

As a band, Wings released seven studio albums. Coming up, McCartney will release the band's live studio album, One Hand Clapping. Some of Wings' biggest hits include “Band on the Run,” “Jet,” and “Silly Love Songs.”

After Wings broke up, McCartney got back into writing solo material. In 1980, he released McCartney II (which wouldn't be followed-up with until 2020).

From then on, McCartney continued to release new music. Some of his notable albums include Tug of War, Flowers in the Dirt, New, and Egypt Station. McCartney III was released in 2020 and closed out his trilogy of self-titled albums.

Since 1989, McCartney has also been a touring machine. He embarked on his first solo tour in 1989. In 2002, he introduced a new touring band that he is still playing with to this day.
