Halloween Mini House Tour {& 14 more Spook-tacular Spaces!!}

Come see my scary halloween mini house tour, and be prepared to be scared.

Spook-tacular.

I think I just like saying that word.

Halloween décor can be pretty Spook-tacular.

See, there I go saying it again.

Speaking of saying things, I will say that Halloween is one holiday that my boys love decorating for.

They were pretty pumped about adding black creepy spiders and flies to Mom’s flowers.

There may or may not have been approximately fifty creepy spiders and flies piled up on top of one bloom.

Kind of reminds me of the way that kid’s decorate the Christmas tree…with all the decorations concentrated in one little area.

But they were having fun, so who am I to rain on their spider-placing parade?

I waited until they’d gone to bed to go back and ‘edit’ their arrangement:)

Spooktacular Halloween House Tour poster.

Oh, and today 14 of my fellow bloggers are sharing their own Spook-tacular Halloween House Tours as well!

I can’t wait to see how they have decorated for the spooky holiday… all the links to their fabulous tours are at the bottom of this post.

15 Spook-tacular Halloween House Tours poster.

So without further ado, come on in for the mini-tour of my house…

Paper black spiders traipse across our wall and DIY large wooden sign …

Black spiders crawling up the wall by the TV.

This year my DIY black and white hand sketched sharpie pumpkins grace our window ledge…right beside the drop cloth sharpie pillow I shared recently…

There is a black spider pillow and pumpkins decorating the window sill.

Some of the ‘edited’ spider covered blooms…

There are black spiders crawling up a plant.

My oldest son’s favourite thing to decorate with was this black netting that I got at the dollar store last year… along with some little black crows and owls.  It makes for a super quick and easy way to add a Halloween feel to our gallery wall.

Black netting and black crows are on the wall in the sitting room.

The dining room has been invaded by black crows. There is something super creepy about crows… kind of reminds me of the crow scenes in Vampire Diaries. If you don’t follow that show, you are truly missing out.

There are black crows and a skeleton in the dining room.

Another easy way to add a little Halloween feel? Throw some giant spiders in your fall centerpiece.

The boys love these giant tarantulas- and I must say they are pretty popular each night during dinnertime.

While they love the spiders, I love the contrast of the orange, yellow, and browns against the crisp black and cream of my easy DIY drop cloth striped table runner.

A big tarantula spider is on the faux fruit which is on the dining room table.

The mantel has a few of last year’s projects…such as the chevron spider art , and the easy DIY Spell Books that I shared last year.

A white cabinet with bugs, skulls and witches brew on top of it.

Maybe you read about how I transformed a cheap plastic skull from the dollar store into this faux mercury Pottery Barn Knock Off? I did the same with all these mini skulls from the dollar store as well… a cheap and easy vase filler.

Black spattered skulls are beside a stack of books.

Done for today!

Next week I will show you a little of our outdoor Halloween décor…and our entry hall.

Ready for another creepy Halloween tour?

I know that house tours are my fave!!

You are in luck!

Today you can head over to these fabulous blogs for some more Spook-tacular Halloween inspiration!

Home Bunch - Interior Design Ideas

Boo! Are you ready for an almost spooky house tour?! I say “almost” because 1) Kari’s home, of @houseofkeene , is too beautiful to be spooky, and 2) her Halloween decor is, in my opinion, tasteful – aka, not too scary for kids and scaredy-cat grownups like myself. 😂

It’s such a treat – not a trick – to have Kari Keene of @houseofkeene back on Home Bunch ! If you’re an avid reader of the blog you might recall seeing her house tour recently featured on our “ Beautiful Homes of Instagram ” series. If you haven’t seen it, make sure to click on the link I just shared. You really can’t miss that tour. It’s one of my favorites!

Here, Kari, one you must follow on Instagram , shares everything about her Halloween decor. I hope this makes you smile and get inspired to decorate your home for the upcoming Halloween!

“Aside from the average pumpkins, this is the first year I have ever decorated for Halloween and it most certainly won’t be the last. I wanted to add fun and semi-spooky (not scary) decorations so my children could enjoy them. Okay, me too!

My three year old and I had such a lovely time decorating together. His favorite part is either the skeletons, which he named one of them, or the witch broom.

My son and I went on an adventure walk and collected the sticks and twigs to make the witch broom. To make the broom, I used a hot glue gun, thin craft wire, wire cutters, and jute twine. First, I used the hot glue gun to glue the twigs to the larger stick, aka the broom handle. Once I achieved a desired look and I was happy with the fullness of the twigs I wrapped thin craft wire around the base a few times to secure the twigs. Then, I used the metal cutters to cut the metal. Lastly, I wrapped the twin around the craft metal to hide it. I used hot glue to secure the twine.”

Skeletons —  Halloween Decoration .

“Another fun and inexpensive decoration that we are big fans of are the bats! So much that we added them to three different areas. I added them to the exterior, entry way and on my kitchen cabinets. I hung the bats using blue painters tape instead of the tape that came with them. I was concerned about the double sided stick tape removing the paint from my walls.” – Kari of @houseofkeene

Flying Hats

“Another fun touch was hanging a few witch hats from the ceiling to make it appear as if they are floating. This was so simple and fun. You’ll need: witch hats, fishing line, a needle, safety pins and small command strips. First, thread the fishing line through the needle then insert it through the outside tip of the hat. Next, pull it threw and remove the needle so you can thread the string through a safety pin. Tie it and then pull it from the outside. The safety pin prevents the string from going back through the hole. Then tied the fishing string to small command strip hooks and hung them.” – Kari of @houseofkeene

Witch Hats — Aneco 8 Pack Halloween Costume Witch Hat .

I hung the witch hats with these items:

Baskets: Studio McGee x Target .

Between Hats & Bats

Paint Color: Sherwin Williams Alabaster, Eggshell sheen.

Frames: Target .

“One of my favorite Halloween movies is Hocus Pocus, which gave me inspiration to create the witch area in the mudroom. I grabbed some things I had lying around the house to make this look possible. I used a home decor book for the potion book. I used some black craft paper to wrap around the labels on our vitamin bottles, which are glass and an amber color. These bottles are the potions. I used an antique clay pot for the cauldron and some black measuring spoons. I also used the black craft paper to draw a cute little mouse. Finally, I hung a witch hat and some left over spooky cloth to make it appear as if it was a witches cape and hat. For the final touch I added the broom that my son and I made. He thought it was hilarious to run around the house pretending to ride the broom. It was cute!

Witch Broomstick: Broom with Lights – similar.

I hope you enjoyed our Halloween tour as much as I enjoyed decorating” – Kari of @houseofkeene

Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights 2024: Every House Announced So Far

Everything we know about the houses coming to Halloween Horror Nights in 2024

A masked face jumping out at somebody screaming at Halloween Horror Nights

Halloween Horror Nights At Universal Studios Florida

A quiet place, halloween horror nights at universal studios hollywood.

Seasonal events are a big way that all theme parks try to attract visitors, as well as try to attract the same visitors back into the parks again. Few seasonal events, however, are as popular as Halloween Horror Nights. The horror-themed event takes place at both Universal Studios Hollywood and Florida and is by far the biggest event of the year for both. Every year fans get scared by a new collection of houses, and HHN 2024 is looking to be a great event.

In a significant shift from the normal way Halloween Horror Nights has been handled in the past, the announcements we’ve seen so far have been focused on HHN’s original concepts created especially for the event, rather than the licensed projects based on popular or upcoming movies or TV series. There’s still a lot we don’t yet know about Halloween Horror Nights, but here’s everything we know so far about the houses at this year’s event on both coasts

Dr. Oddfellow at 2023 Halloween Horror Nights

Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Florida at Universal Orlando Resort is, with apologies to the other HHN events, the marquee version of the event. It’s the biggest, and therefore it always has more to offer. This means it always has more unique houses not available at the other park.

Slaughter Sinema 2

Slaughter Sinema 2 logo image

Carey, OH is a fictional town where many of Halloween Horror Night's original concepts are set. Back at the one in 2018, we were introduced to the town’s drive-in movie theater as part of the Slaughter Sinema house. Every good movie needs a sequel, and the same is true with houses. Slaughter Sinema 2 will offer scares inspired by classic grindhouse flicks, spaghetti westerns and more.

Goblin’s Feast

Goblin's Feast logo image

Most Halloween Horror Nights houses, like the stories they’re based on, are usually set in the real world, or something close to it. But, one house this year is going hard with a fantasy setting. Goblin’s Feast is set in a village of goblins where a feast is being prepared for a collection of fantasy monsters, and the guests are set to be the main course.

Major Sweets Candy Factory

Major Sweets Candy Factory logo image

These houses usually take a year or more to be designed, and for that reason it seems unlikely that a candy factory-themed HHN house was inspired by the ill-fated Wonka experience in the UK . Having said that, from the perspective of the kids, Willy Wonka is a horror icon, and Major Sweets Candy Factory seems to be inspired by that idea. Guests are chaperons on a field trip, where treats turn the children into monsters (more so than children already are, I mean). The house is a canonical prequel to the Sweet Revenge scarezone from HHN in 2022

The Museum: Deadly Exhibits

The Museum: Deadly Exhibit logo image

You always need to be careful when examining creepy museum exhibits. The Museum: Deadly Exhibits will place guests at a folklore museum to see a special exhibit, The Rotting Stone. Unfortunately, the stone is home to a terrible evil that is able to escape just as you arrive.

Monstruos: The Monsters Of Latin America

Monstruos: The Monsters of Latin America logo image

When a HHN house is popular enough we might see it return after a few years, or as in the case of this year’s Slaughter Sinema, a sequel. This year will see at least one house make the jump across the country. Monstruos: The Monsters of Latin America was, in our opinion, the best house at Universal Studios Hollywood in 2023 . It seems a lot of people likely agreed, because the house will appear at Universal Studios Florida this year. It remains to be seen if it will be an exact replica of the previous one or an upgraded and expanded version.

Triplets Of Terror

Triplets of Terror logo image

Halloween Horror Nights has created some incredible original characters over the years. Known as Icons, none of the houses announced so far will include any of them, but Triplets of Terror may be the beginning of creating new ones. The Barmy Triplets are celebrating their birthday this year and you’re invited to the party. Unfortunately, the triplets celebrate by recreating the murder of their family.

John Krasinski in A Quiet Place.

The first announced house that actually is based on a movie is A Quiet Place . To say the least this house is an exciting concept because one assumes that the goal here will be for a Quiet Place house to remain near silent , rather than full of screams. We'll have to wait and see how it turns out.

Universal Studios Florida Halloween Horror Nights Rumors

Freddy Fazbear on stage singing in Five Nights at Freddy's movie

Halloween Horror Nights in 2023 had 10 houses and only six have been announced for 2024 so far, which means there are at least four more left to be announced. Considering the focus on original concepts right now, it’s a safe bet the remaining four houses will be based on popular franchises.

Several rumors have indicated that we could see the return of a Ghostbusters house , though this one may be based on the new Frozen Empire movie. Other franchises that are churning through the rumor mill have included Five Nights at Freddy’s , which had a massive hit movie last year. There are, honestly, more rumors than there are available slots for houses, so they won’t all come to pass, but rumors have ended up being correct before. Such reports did predict The Last of Us coming to Halloween Horror Nights before it happened.

The Exterminatorz terror tram

So far, Only one house has been confirmed for Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood. USH usually has around eight houses, compared to USF 10, but it also has the Terror Tram, which turns the classic Universal Studios Backlot Tour into a themed experience. We often see a few of the houses shared between the two parks, usually the IP-based houses, but USH is virtually guaranteed to have some original concepts, as well.

John Krasinski running with a flashlight in hand in A Quiet Place.

While HHN in Florida started with original houses, Hollywood is starting with, well, Hollywood productions. The park's version of A Quiet Place was the first announced house. Not every house the two parks share is always perfectly identical, so this one may have some surprises in store.

Universal Studios Hollywood Halloween Horror Nights Rumors

Emily Alyn Lind in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire

As has been the case in previous years, the houses rumored to be attached to IP are the ones both parks are likely to share. Rumors include a Bride of Frankenstein house, possibly the return of a popular Bride of Frankenstein house from 2021 . A Quiet Place and Ghostbusters : Frozen Empire are also being rumored. A Terror Tram inspired by Blumhouse , which has been the source of many HHN houses the last few years, is also a possibility.

Halloween Horror Nights is already shaping up to be an incredible event on both coasts in 2024. We’re still months away before the first nights, so keep checking back here as we’ll be updating this as new announcements are made for this year’s HHN.

A Quiet Place Is Coming to Halloween Horror Nights 2024 at Universal Hollywood & Orlando

The first bi-coastal Halloween Horror Nights haunted house of the 2024 scare season has been revealed!

halloween house tour

Over the last few weeks, Universal Studios Orlando has been gradually teasing their 2024  Halloween Horror Nights original lineup of haunted houses . Now, it's Universal Studios Hollywood's turn to join the fun as both theme parks have revealed the first shared IP haunted house of the upcoming season: A Quiet Place.

RELATED:  Universal Orlando Kick Starts Halloween Horror Nights Earlier Than Ever in 2024

Inspired by Paramount Pictures’ critically acclaimed franchise of films, the A Quiet Place haunted houses will open for scares starting Friday, August 30 at Universal Orlando Resort, and Thursday, September 5 at Universal Studios Hollywood.

What is A Quiet Place  all about?

Emily Blunt and John Krasinski at the red carpet for the World Premiere of "A Quiet Place Part II"

From the start, the  A   Quiet Place film franchise has been creatively shepherded by  John Krasinski (a.k.a. our forever Jim on The Office ). He directed A Quiet Place , wrote and directed A Quiet Place II and co-wrote/produced the upcoming prequel, A Quiet Place: Day One . The post-apocalyptic thriller/horror series is centered on the invasion of blind extraterrestrial creatures who crash onto Earth and end civilization as humans know it. Keenly attuned to all sounds, the aliens find their prey when they feel vibrations or loud sounds. Humans who survive the initial onslaught quickly figure out that being as silent as possible is their only chance at evading their new intergalactic predators. All three films provide different survivor perspectives of the invasion.

What should A Quiet Place fans expect from the haunted houses?

Key art for Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights: A Quiet Place

As silence means salvation in the films, the A Quiet Place haunted houses in each theme park will embrace that approach too. Featuring unique sound design, special effects and performances by scare actors who will lean into the dread for some potent jump scares, the haunted houses will have a "less is more" sound approach. And for the very first time, the haunted houses will incorporate the use of American Sign Language (ASL) which is featured in the films.

The houses will include familiar visuals and set pieces seen in  A Quiet Place and A Quiet Place II . For example, guests will traverse the creaking floorboards of the Abbott farmhouse including their safe house root cellar. Per the Universal Studios release: "The snarls of the larger-than-life predators will follow guests at every spine-chilling turn, and guests must remember: "if they hear you, they will hunt you."

Fans can get a jump-start on their Halloween Horror Nights gear with an all-new merchandise collection available for purchase now at Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood, as well as online . New items include a t-shirt and mug inspired by the all-original A Quiet Place haunted house.

Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights announces ‘A Quiet Place’-themed haunted house

halloween house tour

  • Universal Studios has revealed the first major haunted house for Halloween Horror Nights 2024: ‘A Quiet Place.’
  • The house will be featured at both Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood.
  • Halloween Horror Nights officially run on select nights from Aug. 30 through Nov. 3 at Universal Orlando and from Sept. 5 through Nov. 3 at Universal Studios Hollywood.

Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights 2024's 'A Quiet Place' house will be inspired by the first two films in the series.

Shhh. Don’t make a sound.

Not if you want to make it through the first major haunted house revealed for Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights 2024: ‘ A Quiet Place .’

Set in the eerily silent world of Paramount Pictures’ ‘A Quiet Place’ and ‘A Quiet Place Part II,’ guests will have to keep their screams on the inside to evade sightless creatures that use sound to hunt their prey.

Unlike the location-specific, original storyline houses announced so far, this intellectual property house will be featured at both Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood . Other IP haunted houses will be announced over the summer.

What can we expect from ‘A Quiet Place’?

“Fans will relive the tension that will come to life in the iconic scenes from the first two films, including traveling through the farmhouse that serves as the Abbott family’s shelter and stepping into the root cellar where Evelyn Abbott escapes to give birth as one of the creatures closes in,” Universal said in a press release Thursday. “Guests must remember: if they hear you, they will hunt you.”

This will be the first Halloween Horror Nights house to incorporate American Sign Language “to capture the authenticity of the films” directed by John Krasinski.

“Mirroring the silence in the films, the haunted houses will embrace unique sound design, special effects and the adept performances of the scareactors to convey the ominous sense of dread depicted in the films,” Universal said.

This isn’t your average souvenir shop. Universal’s Tribute Stores are their own type of attraction.

How many HHN houses are there?

There will be 10 houses and five scare zones at Universal Orlando this year. Six other house themes have been revealed so far:

  • Triplets of Terror
  • Monstruos: The Monsters of Latin America
  • The Museum: Deadly Exhibit
  • Major Sweets Candy Factory
  • Goblin’s Feast
  • Slaughter Sinema 2

There will be eight houses, “an onslaught of sinister scare zones” and the fan-favorite Terror Tram at Universal Studios Hollywood.

What are the dates for Halloween Horror Nights 2024?

Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights officially run on select nights from Aug. 30 through Nov. 3. However, this year, the Florida resort is holding its first-ever Premium Scream Night on Aug. 29. The limited capacity-event will offer early access, shorter wait times, a selection of all you-care-to-enjoy food and nonalcoholic drinks, a souvenir credential, and free self-parking.

Universal Studios Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Nights will run on select nights from Sept. 5 through Nov. 3.

How much are tickets to Halloween Horror Nights?

Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights tickets start at $82.99, up from last year’s starting price of $79.99. Tickets to Universal Orlando’s Premium Scream Night cost $350.

Universal Studios Hollywood’s HHN tickets start at $77, up from $74 last year.

2023 Best-Decorated Halloween Houses: Driving Routes, Photos, Map, Descriptions and More!

We are dying to bring you our 7th Annual Best Decorated Halloween Houses list with a map , photos , and important details (including how scary it is, when the display be ready, and hours for houses with light/music shows)! We also prepared driving routes for Halloween House Tours .

Hocus pocus, its time to focus… on the best decorated houses for Halloween in Chicago’s suburbs! Local families have gone all out to create displays for everyone to enjoy. Neighbors all over Chicagoland deck out their houses with spooky decorations, punny gravestones, fog machines, bubbles, and more.

My boo crew loves to pile in the car and drive around looking at giant Halloween displays. We hop out of the car to check out the local spooky decorations and music. The kids love to bring glow sticks, a pumpkin cookie, and hot apple cider for a fun night out. Sometimes we even let them dress up in their Halloween costumes to do our spooky driving tours!

We think this pack of glow sticks is pretty great, and one of the moms on our team found this flashlight that projects a ghost, spider, pumpkin, skull, or bat , which makes it even more fun! (If you purchase through these affiliate links, it’s the same price, but we’ll earn a commission that helps support Kidlist.)

Now that the Halloween season is over, I wanted to tell you how much we enjoyed your list! My husband and I would pick a different group each weekend. We made it to all the houses! We appreciate all the work you do in putting together this list…all the details and pictures. We like that the houses were listed in alphabetical order as well as grouped by area. By the way, we live in New Lenox and we are glad you had some houses from New Lenox listed. Thanks again for the nice service you have provided!

I stumbled upon this list looking for ideas for 2023. This is an awesome list. I hope you have a new list coming up.

Yes! We check in with each homeowner, accept submissions for houses to add to the list, and update this one every year.

There’s a house on Woodworth Pl, in Roselle, between Roselle Rd and Prospect, that blows all of these away

Thanks! We’ll have to check it out.

‘A Quiet Place’ Haunted House Coming to Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights

The first house announced for the 2024 event is based on Paramount’s popular film series

A Quiet Place Part 2

“A Quiet Place” is coming to Halloween Horror Nights.

Universal Studios announced that a haunted house, inspired by Paramount’s blockbuster franchise, will be debuting at this year’s Halloween Horror Nights, at both the Universal Studios Orlando (on August 30) and Universal Studios Hollywood (on September 5) parks.

Based on John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place” and “A Quiet Place: Part II,” “the haunted houses will embrace unique sound design, special effects and the adept performances of the scare-actors to convey the ominous sense of dread depicted in the films” (according to the official synopsis). What’s really cool about these houses is that they will incorporate the use of American Sign Language (ASL) for the first time ever, “to capture the authenticity of the films.” The houses will take you through the farmhouse that serves as the Abbott family’s shelter, as well as the root cellar where Emily Blunt’s character gives birth. “The snarls of the larger-than-life predators will follow guests at every spine-chilling turn, and guests must remember: if they hear you, they will hunt you,” reads the synopsis.

a-quiet-place-day-one-lupita-nyongo

Halloween Horror Nights is an annual event at both Universal Studios theme parks and an annual tradition for those who love to get terrified around total strangers. At Universal Studios Hollywood the festivities begin on September 5 and run on select nights through November 3. As part of the event you can expect “eight all-new haunted houses, an onslaught of sinister scare zones and the iconic Terror Tram.” Scary!

For those who really want to relive the terror, there are Frequent Fear and Ultimate Fear ticket options, along with a number of other ticketing options. Head over to the official website for all of the details.

The latest installment in the “Quiet Place” franchise, “A Quiet Place: Day One,” a prequel set before the events of the first film that explore the initial invasion of the sound-sensitive alien race, opens in theaters on June 28.

Virtual ghost tours

Winchester Mystery House

1.  Winchester Mystery House

Sarah Winchester spent 38 years intricately remodeling her home into the sprawling 24,000 square-foot mansion . There was seemingly no architectural rhyme or reason to the property's design—there are unfinished staircases, misplaced windows, a door that leads nowhere. However, it's believed that this labyrinth-like layout intended to confuse the spirits of those killed by the Winchester Repeating Arms' guns (the company Sarah inherited from her husband's family). Finding your way out of this confusing attraction might be more challenging than finding spirits.

Pittock Mansion

2.  Pittock Mansion

Henry and Georginia Pittock, who made their fortune in the newspaper industry, had plans to retire and revel in Portland's panoramic views. They began construction on an impresive French Renaissance-style château, which was completed in 1914. However, they only lived there for four years until they passed away. Relatives inherited the home, which was later abandoned and eventually damaged in the Columbus Day Storm in 1962. But residents fought to keep the property open after the destruction, and two years later, the Pittock Mansion relaunched as a museum. Some say the Pittocks are still there—after all, they truly didn't have too much time to enjoy the grounds. Don't be alarmed though: Visitors claim to see apparitions of the husband and wife duo, but they are supposedly friendly spirits. Well, that's … reassuring.

Eastern State Penitentiary

3.  Eastern State Penitentiary

The world's first penitentiary—and most expensive, at one time—housed dangerous criminals like Al Capone, Leo Callahan and Freda Frost. Now, the menacing gothic structure is empty, though many claim there is still plenty lurking in the abandoned cellblocks.

Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast Museum

4.  Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast Museum

The quaint Victorian home in New England seems innocent enough, but its history is far from rosy. Back in 1892, a young woman named Lizzie Borden was accused of murdering her father and stepmom with an axe, though she was never proven guilty. If you're brave enough, you can even crash here overnight.

The Queen Mary

5.  The Queen Mary

Not all of this famed ship's passengers had a comforting experience. Just take it from the Lady in White and the man who was believed to have met his fate in the Queen Mary's boiler room, who are said to haunt the vessel to this day. Think you can hop aboard for a peek with their spirits still roaming? You're brave, dude.

These Virtual Haunted Houses Will Transform Your Own Home Into the Scariest Place Ever

Who needs a haunted house when you have a Wi-Fi?

halloween house tour

Halloween, like everything else, looks different this year.

The ongoing coronavirus pandemic means that people, especially in the U.S., will likely have to continue to social distance through the fall, and that means trick-or-treating, parades, and Halloween parties are probably a no-go.

Virtual experiences have been increasingly popular since people have to stay home more. Since the pandemic began, there have been virtual museums , virtual train rides , virtual outdoor travel experiences , and more. And now, Halloween is going virtual, too, so you can enjoy the spooky season while keeping your friends, family, and yourself safe.

If you’re looking for a good fright, there are lots of virtual haunted houses to enjoy throughout October. Some of these tours of so-called “real” haunted houses and others are more kitschy, Halloween-themed houses.

Check out some of these virtual tours that are all about the things that go bump in the night.

Winchester Mystery House

No list of haunted house tours is complete without the Winchester Mystery House. Located in San Jose, Calif., it once belonged to Sarah Winchester, the widow of the heir to the family who founded the Winchester Repeating Arms Company (which patented the Winchester rifle). Rumor has it that Sarah conversed with spirits who threatened her to keep building the house. She allegedly built hidden passageways and doors to “hide” from the ghosts. Now, it’s a popular tourist attraction, and you can do a virtual walkthrough on the official website .

The Pittock Mansion

Once the home to newspaper publishers Henry and Georgiana Pittock in Portland, Oregon, the home sat empty for years before becoming a historic house museum. Why would such a beautiful estate be unoccupied for so long? Rumor has it that the original owners may have not actually “left” the house after passing away. You can now take a virtual 3D tour of the entire mansion online .

Lizzie Borden House

It may seem strange that such a gruesome true crime case is now a Halloween destination. But the Lizzie Borden house, rumored to be haunted by Lizzie, her father, and her stepmother themselves, is actually a museum and library these days. You can take in-person tours of the house, located in Fall River, Massachusetts. But, if you are staying home this year, you can easily take a virtual tour on the house’s website .

Paris Catacombs

While not a haunted “house,” these tunnels are still spooky nonetheless. Some would say the spookiest place on earth. The dark tunnels once held the remains of over six million people. Today, any bones you might see are usually decoration put in place for tourists, but it’s worth taking a 360-degree tour of the catacombs, some of which are quite claustrophobic.

Salem Witch Museum Online Tours

Have a little history with your Halloween plans. The Salem Witch Museum is dedicated to the famous Salem Witch trials of 1692, which oversaw the deaths of 25 people. Naturally, there have been a fair amount of ghost stories that came as a result of this tumultuous period in history, including people spotting ghosts in the town. The museum has compiled a number of tours for different, important locations in the town, including several homes of people involved in the trials, including the Jonathan Corwin House, (a.k.a. The Witch House). Check them out on the museum’s website .

The Queen Mary

This famously haunted ship, now docked in Long Beach, Calif., is well-known for being haunted, especially Stateroom B340, which has been investigated by ghost hunters many times. This room in particular has a history of people seeing paranormal activity, such as lights turning on and off or faucets running on their own. You can take a Google Earth tour of the ship itself. Or, if you’re looking for more Halloween-appropriate content, the ship’s YouTube page has a whole playlist of walkthrough tours of the annual Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor Halloween experience.

The Stanley Hotel, Room 217

The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado regularly does haunted tours of the grounds throughout the year, but now you can experience one of its most famous rooms virtually. While the hotel has been rumored to be haunted for a long time, it is probably most famous for its connection with author Stephen King and his book, "The Shining ." Now you can walk through the hotel virtually by watching its tour video on YouTube . It’s not inherently spooky, but maybe you’ll spot a ghost somewhere.

Crescent Hotel

With a reputation as being one of the most haunted hotels in the world, the Crescent, located in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, has been rumored to be the final destination for ghosts, poltergeists, and other paranormal beings. Much like the Stanley, the Crescent Hotel regularly gives in-person ghost tours. Since traveling to the hotel itself isn’t in the cards for many people this year, you can experience the tour on YouTube instead .

Haunted Mansion Escape Room Adventure

This online experience through Airbnb is a Halloween-themed escape room that is conducted online. Each experience is for five people at a time, who will work together to solve puzzles and escape a haunted mansion being controlled by a Game Master. You and your friends can make a booking on the Airbnb website .

Bran Castle

Yes, you can take a look at Dracula’s lair from your couch. The famous Transylvanian castle located in Bran, Romania, is most often credited for being the inspiration for Dracula’s castle in Bram Stoker’s "Dracula" novel. Thanks to Google Maps , you can tour parts of the castle online.

In addition to these experiences, there are walkthrough videos for dozens of Halloween attractions (i.e. not real haunted houses) from all over the U.S. on YouTube , including Knotts Scary Farm , Middletown Haunted Trail , and the IT Experience: Niebolt House in Hollywood.

6 all-new haunted houses announced for Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights 2024

U niversal has been a fixture in the world of monster movies since the 1930s, bringing fictional characters like the Wolf Man, Dracula and the Invisible Man to the big screen.

These famous monsters have been a mainstay at Universal Orlando Resort since the park opened in Orlando in 1990, appearing in attractions like the "Horror Make-Up Show" and the Revenge of the Mummy roller coaster. It only makes sense that Universal would drive full-throttle into the world of haunted attractions by turning its entire park into one.

Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights began as a three-night event in 1991 (hosted by Beetlejuice himself) with just one haunted house. Now in its 33rd year, Halloween Horror Nights will run for a record-breaking 48 nights, beginning in August for the first time ever. After all, who doesn't want to start celebrating spooky season a little early?

Throughout the event's more-than-two-month run, guests can experience a more sinister side of Universal Orlando. The event occurs in the dark of night after Universal Studios Florida closes to daytime guests. The haunted houses, outdoor scare zones and live entertainment serve as a terrifying counterpart to the family-friendly fun that Universal is otherwise known for.

There is no minimum age requirement for Halloween Horror Nights, but due to its intense nature and extreme gore, the event is not recommended for children under 13. If you want to bring kids, consider whether they are ready for this event.

Popular dates, including opening weekend and Halloween, sell out early, so you must plan ahead to get the socks scared right off your feet. Get your tickets now so you don't miss out. Start planning in advance so you know the ins and outs before exploring the darker side of Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights.

When does Halloween Horror Nights start?

This year, Halloween Horror Nights will occur on select nights from Aug. 30 through Nov. 3. The event is open every night of the week except Mondays and Tuesdays. It typically begins at 6:30 p.m. on event nights and operates until 2 a.m.

Haunted houses

As is typical for HHN, there will be 10 haunted houses at Universal's Halloween Horror Nights this year. The houses are scattered throughout the park. You can find them using the Universal Orlando app's map. Some are in overflow queue areas for rides, while others are in real working soundstages. Some are in large tents and don't look nearly as scary on the outside as they do inside.

Houses are always a terrifying mix of original concepts dreamt up by the menacing minds at Universal and houses inspired by pop culture horror favorites like "Stranger Things" and "Halloween." Most years, the original and movie-based houses are split evenly with five apiece.

This year, Universal departed from convention and kicked off the house announcements with six original houses. Here's a quick rundown:

  • Slaughter Sinema 2 : Whether you like it or not, this house makes you the star of your own B-movie marathon, complete with creature features, grindhouse gore, spaghetti Westerns and more.
  • Goblin's Feast : As you walk through this house, you'll observe preparations for a lavish feast for the village goblins, orcs, hobgoblins and witches. Did we forget to mention you're the main course?
  • Major Sweets Candy Factory : This isn't Major Sweets' first appearance at Halloween Horror Nights. The candy-making tycoon had his own HHN scare zone in 2022. This year, guests have been invited to chaperone a field trip to his candy factory, where the "deadly yet delicious" treats have some unexpected effects on the children who consume them.
  • Monstruos: The Monsters of Latin America : La Muerte (aka Death) will guide you through the house, where you will encounter three terrifying legends — Tlahuelpuchi, La Lechuza and El Silbon.
  • The Museum: Deadly Exhibit : There's more than meets the eye at the museum's new folklore exhibit, "The Rotting Stone." It will destroy everything in its path once its evil is unleashed.
  • Triplets of Terror : It's just a birthday party, so what could go wrong? A lot, in fact. The Barmy triplets have a bloody re-creation of their family's murders planned for this "bash."

Four houses have yet to be announced, but it's safe to assume they will be based on existing movies and video games as in previous years.

Scare zones

In addition to the haunted houses, Universal creates a series of outdoor scare zones throughout the park. This year, there will be five scare zones, and there's pretty much no way to get around the park without facing the scare zones head-on.

"Scareactors" (it rhymes with "characters") roam around the scare zones looking for unwitting victims to frighten, but they aren't as scary as the houses. They are more likely to shoot you an evil glare or follow behind you a bit too closely. However, they also won't hesitate to rev a chainsaw right in front of you if they think it'll make you jump.

How much are tickets to Halloween Horror Nights?

Single-night tickets for this year's event start at $82.99 per person, plus tax. Halloween Horror Nights is a separately ticketed event, so this doesn't get you daytime access to the parks. This year, select ticket types include a six-month subscription to the Peacock streaming service to catch up on your favorite horror franchises before the event.

If you do have a daytime ticket (or annual pass), Universal usually keeps small "Stay & Scream" areas of the park open; this way, you can have a drink and a bite to eat while the park is transformed for that night's festivities. Universal also usually offers a "Scream Early" ticket that allows you to enter Universal Studios Florida as early as 3 p.m. to enjoy the regular daytime attractions and be first in line for the houses.

Universal also offers multinight "Frequent Fear" and "Rush of Fear" passes for those who plan on visiting multiple times throughout the event. They are not yet on sale for this year.

If you want to enjoy the parks during the day and at night, vacation packages that include hotel accommodations , park tickets and admission to Halloween Horror Nights are available. You can even use your hotel keycard to access a dedicated event entrance designed exclusively for hotel guests.

Halloween Horror Nights ticket upgrades

Universal offers a variety of add-ons and upgrades for Halloween Horror Nights . These include:

  • Halloween Horror Nights Premium Scream Night — If you want to enjoy Halloween Horror Nights with smaller crowds and shorter waits, Universal is hosting its first-ever Premium Scream Night for one night only Aug. 29. For $350 per person plus tax, you can enjoy staggered entry into all 10 haunted houses (for even more scares), all-you-care-to-enjoy food and nonalcoholic beverages, free self-parking, access to select Universal Studios Florida attractions, and an exclusive event souvenir credential and lanyard. Tickets will be available online beginning June 6 and will likely sell out fast.
  • Halloween Horror Nights R.I.P. Tour — This is Universal's play on a VIP tour for Halloween Horror Nights. Your expert guide will lead you to a priority entrance at each house, sharing their in-depth knowledge of the event along the way. You'll also get access to a pretour reception with complimentary food and a cash bar, unlimited Universal Express skip-the-line ride access, a commemorative tour credential, a lanyard and a pin. Group and private tours are available, and pricing begins at $369.99 per person; this doesn't include the cost of your Halloween Horror Nights ticket.
  • Halloween Horror Nights Behind the Screams: Unmasking the Horror Tour — Two types of people would benefit from the Unmasking the Horror Tour: those who are too scared to visit the haunted houses at night and those who want to dive deeper into the details of the houses. This is a lights-on tour that takes place during daytime hours. You can choose to tour three or six haunted houses. Prices start at $99.99 per person, plus tax, and $179.99 per person, plus tax, respectively. Regular theme park admission or Halloween Horror Nights tickets are not required for this experience.
  • Halloween Horror Nights Express Pass — Universal also offers the Halloween Horror Nights Express Pass, which lets you skip the standby line once per night at the haunted houses and select attractions, much like the daytime Universal Express Pass . Wait times for the haunted houses can climb as high as 90 minutes on busy nights, so this add-on is well worth the money. Pricing starts at $139.99 per person, plus tax. Halloween Horror Nights event admissions are not included and must be purchased separately.

Tips for visiting

Save time for live shows.

When we say that Halloween Horror Nights takes over the entire park, we mean it. Aside from the haunted houses and scare zones, there are two live shows, themed food and drink booths, and exclusive Halloween Horror Nights merchandise.

The Universal Orlando app includes times for live entertainment. To get a good spot, you typically want to arrive at least 30 minutes before showtime.

Follow this advice if you're a scaredy cat

If you typically don't like to go to haunted houses, you may wonder if you should even visit Universal Orlando during Halloween Horror Nights. If you're not quite sure you can handle it, there are still ways to enjoy the event.

As we mentioned, the outdoor scare zones aren't quite as scary as the houses, so they're a good way to tiptoe into the event. You can also spend your time playing carnival games, eating themed foods, riding roller coasters and watching the shows if you need a break from the houses.

You can book the aforementioned Behind the Screams: Unmasking the Horror Tour to see the houses during the day with the lights on and without the jump scares. Seeing the houses with the lights on and getting the lay of the land, so to speak, may even give you the courage you need to visit again at night.

Look for Halloween Horror Nights merchandise

Most of the merchandise is in the Halloween Horror Nights Tribute Store near the Revenge of the Mummy coaster. The store itself is a themed attraction: It has multiple rooms filled with props and decor that make it feel like a haunted house without jump scares.

You can purchase the requisite hats and T-shirts, along with specialty masks, art and memorabilia. There's also an entire room dedicated to spooky treats.

Keep an eye out for original characters

One of the most interesting things about Halloween Horror Nights is the well-developed original characters, which seem to find their way into the event year after year.

You don't have to know these characters and the tangled web of lore surrounding the event in order to enjoy it. Still, several articles on Universal Orlando's blog go "behind the screams" of the event if you want to learn more.

Stay tuned for additional details as this year's event draws near.

postimage

Costumed madmen wielding fake chainsaws are fun, but sometimes you want the real deal: an authentic, hair-raising, spine-chilling walk through a place where bad things actually happened. Herewith, eight real haunted houses fit for real thrill seekers.

1. Winchester Mystery House

San Jose, California

What happens when a grief-stricken woman has a ton of dough and lot of time on her hands? Answer: The Winchester Mystery House , a seven-story mansion filled with serpentine hallways, secret passageways, and eerie staircases that lead to nowhere. Sarah Winchester constructed the bizarre mansion at the behest of spirits who were gunned down by her husband’s deadly invention, the Winchester rifle. Though the real mystery is whether she created all the nooks and crannies to house the ghosts that spoke to her—or hide from them. Book a tour, and judge for yourself.

2. Lemp Mansion

St. Louis, Missouri

real haunted houses tours

Now a theater, B&B, and restaurant, the Lemp Mansion used to house the Lemp family. A powerful clan of beer barons at the turn of the twentieth century, darkness soon consumed the Lemps: By 1950, four members committed suicide, three of whom died inside their gloomy St. Louis home. And it’s their footsteps you’ll hear as you sip your brew. Once you’re buzzed, join in on a Lemp Mansion tour, which usually occur every Monday night at 7:00 P.M.

3. The Grove

Jefferson, Texas

real haunted houses tours

A quaint, porch-front property located in a northeastern Texas river port city, the Grove has not one or two but three resident apparitions. There’s a lady in white who takes the same path through the house when she appears, a man who rustles through the lilies out back, and a Don Juan sort who makes nice with purdy ladies. Get to know the specters every Saturday at 2 P.M. or Sunday at 11 A.M., when tours are usually held.

4. The Wild, Wild West

Jerome, Arizona

Jerome used to be a bustling copper mining town. And though today it’s home to just 400 residents, it continues to hum and stir with paranormal activity. Ghosts of prostitutes, outlaws, and those killed from tragic mining accidents make up the otherworldly population of the town’s historic homes and buildings—which you can tour with The Wild, Wild West . Keep an eye peeled for Sammie Dean, a working gal who was strangled in the Curb District and continues to roam the alleys looking for her killer who was never caught.

5. Villisca Axe Murder House

Villisca, Iowa

Forget the Field of Dreams: The real reason to visit Iowa is this house of nightmares, The Villisca Axe Murder House . In 1912, a ruthless killer bludgeoned to death Josiah Moore, his wife, their four kids and two other visiting children. The attacker’s identity remains a mystery. Today, the historic farmhouse is open to tours or even staying the night. Though guests usually cut their stay short once the visions of the murderer with the axe begin. Understandable. Tour season runs March 28 to October 31: For scaredy cats, there are daylight visits Tuesday through Sunday from 1 to 3:30 P.M. For die-hard ghost hunters, there are overnighters: Check in at 4 P.M., then check out—hopefully—the next morning at 9 A.M.

6. Lizzie Borden House

Fall River, Massachusetts

real haunted houses tours

Even though the murders happened more than a century ago, this crime scene-turned-national landmark remains a hotbed for macabre enthusiasts hoping to meet the ghosts of Lizzie’s parents , who were hacked to death with a hatchet. Tours at the Lizzie Borden House are held from 11 A.M. to 3 P.M. every day, but let’s be honest, you want the full experience: Sleep in the bedrooms where the bludgeoning occurred, watch a grisly reenactment, then relive it all the next morning over coffee and eggs.

7. Myrtles Plantation

St. Francisville, Louisianna

real haunted houses tours

It’s known as one of the most haunted places in America, and for good reason—12 plus ghosts roam the grounds of Myrtles Plantation . One spirit is Chloe, a slave girl who hangs out in the breezeway of the mansion’s general store. Another is the unnamed Ghost Girl, a young lassie dressed in her antebellum best who often materializes in pictures. Tours are offered daily, from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. You can even stay the night and experience the plantation’s dark side when the sun goes down.

8. Whaley House

San Diego, California

Once a prominent family in California, the Whaleys are now just faded apparitions drifting through the Whaley House , a sprawling mid-19th century Greek Revival mansion. But they’re not alone. Now a museum, the Whaley House has a history of hangings, suicides, and untimely deaths, making it the home to several lost souls outside the family. One such spirit is Yankee Jim, who was hanged from the gallows on the site where the house now sits. He schlepps through the house with heavy footsteps. Self-guided daytime tours are available between 10 A.M. and 4:30 P.M. Though we suggest booking a paranormal ghost hunt, which goes down from 10:30 P.M. to midnight. Check the calendar for dates.

A new terrifying haunted house is making its way to Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights this September!

On Thursday, June 6, Universal Studios revealed its frightening upcoming attraction will be inspired by A Quiet Place and A Quiet Place Part II .

Beginning Thursday, Sept. 7, through Sunday, Nov. 3, guests will get a taste of the “silent storytelling” of John Krasinski — who directed and starred in both films — at Universal Orlando Resort in Florida and Universal Studios Hollywood in California.

Fans can journey into the films' chilling post-apocalyptic world and try to escape being hunted by the extraterrestrial creatures that attack any noise they hear. The haunted house will also feature American Sign Language as it plays a key role for the main characters in both movies.

Universal Studios

“Consequential to the storyline, Halloween Horror Nights will incorporate the use of American Sign Language (ASL) for the first time ever within the A Quiet Place haunted houses to capture the authenticity of the films,” according to the press release.

“Mirroring the silence in the films, the haunted houses will embrace unique sound design, special effects and the adept performances of the scareactors to convey the ominous sense of dread depicted in the films,” the release continues.

Through the attraction, fans will get to move through some of the most nail-biting scenes and settings from the original 2018 film and the 2021 sequel.

Guests can “travel through the farmhouse that serves as the Abbott family’s shelter” and explore the root cellar where Evelyn Abbott (played by Emily Blunt ) gives birth as one of the creatures has her cornered.

“The snarls of the larger-than-life predators will follow guests at every spine-chilling turn, and guests must remember: if they hear you, they will hunt you,” the release teases.

Paramount Pictures

Universal’s announcement comes shortly before the premiere of the film franchise’s prequel, A Quiet Place: Day One (in theaters June 28), which takes place on the very first day the creatures arrived on Earth and unleashed absolute chaos in New York City.

Lupita Nyong'o , Joseph Quinn , Alex Wolff, Djimon Hounsou and Denis O'Hare are among some of the big names starring in the highly-anticipated film.

Cobb Factory Haunted House

Opening day: september 29th, 2023.

halloween house tour

The History of Eli Cobb

On September 29th, 1937, police in Old Monroe, Missouri arrived at the dilapidated family business of Eli Cobb, who was at the time suspected in the robbery of a local general store and disappearance of its owner. Receipts indicated that Cobb had been the last customer at the store.

Cobbs’ desolate grain elevator was a study in chaos. Inside, junk and rotting garbage covered the floor and counters. It was almost impossible to walk through the rooms. The smell of filth and decomposition was overwhelming. While the local sheriff, Ethel Woodrow, inspected the kitchen, he felt something brush against his jacket.

When he looked up to see what it was he ran into, he faced a large, dangling carcass hanging upside down from the beams. The carcass had been decapitated, slit open and gutted. An ugly sight to be sure, but a familiar one in that deer-hunting part of the country. It took a few moments to sink in, but soon Woodrow realized that it wasn’t a deer at all, it was the headless butchered body of a woman. Beatrice Cobb, Eli’s wife.

A quick search of the 5 acre family business turned up the bodies of his children, Joshua age 12, Emily age 9 and Adam age 4, in the large back room that served as their bedroom. Each child’s body had been laid in bed as if they where asleep, however later evidence turned up to suggest Cobb hunted them down in what reporters eventually dubbed his “maze of death.” The Maze, which was completely overlooked during the initial days of the investigation was created by Cobb cutting confusing paths into his family business, some of the “walls” where reinforced by plywood or barbed wire.

Pennyslvania’s Spookiest Spots

Below, you’ll find a list of the Keystone State’s spookiest spots. From the hallowed buildings of Philadelphia to the battlefields of Gettysburg, we’ve searched high and low for Pennyslvania’s most haunted locations.

1. Historic Farnsworth House Inn: Gettysburg

As the site of one of the bloodiest battles of the American Civil War, it probably comes as no surprise that Gettysburg is considered to be one of the most haunted places in the state.

The Haunted History

Built in the early 1800s, the Farnsworth House Inn played an important role in the Battle of Gettysburg by housing Confederate sharpshooters. One of these may have accidentally killed 20-year-old Mary Virginia “Jennie” Wade who turned out to be the only civilian who died during the battle. On the final day of the battle, Union soldiers were able to take control of the Farnsworth Inn and killed many of the Confederate soldiers who were stationed there.

The house is littered with more than 100 bullet holes which now serve as a reminder of that horrific time. After the battle ended, the house acted as a pop-up hospital where wounded soldiers were treated. As a result, the house was the location of many painful deaths.

Paranormal Activity

Most of the ghost stories surrounding the house date back to the Civil War. Former residents of the home claimed that the house is haunted by up to 16 ghosts. Each ghost has its own name and personality which includes an eight-year-old boy, a former midwife, and several soldiers. It’s said that the soldiers are still patrolling the house, unable to neglect their military duties. People have reported hearing heavy breathing, smelling the strong scent of cigars, and reported sightings of many different ghostly apparitions.

Visiting the Site

The haunted house operates as a bed and breakfast which means you can spend the night in this chilling spot. If you don’t want to cough up the big bucks to stay there, there’s also an onsite restaurant where you can grab lunch or dinner during your visit to Gettysburg.

2. Devil’s Den: Gettysburg

Part of the Gettysburg Battlefield, the Devil’s Den is an area scattered with massive boulders and outcrops of rock. It is one of the most famous battlefield locations of the Civil War and lies about 500 yards west of the Little Round Top.

Another of Gettysburg’s haunted attractions, the Devil’s Den was one of the bloodiest skirmishes of the Battle of Gettysburg. This formation of rocks in the middle of the Gettysburg Battlefield witnessed the deaths of 2,600 terrified young men on July 2nd, 1863, when the Union and Confederate troops fought a fierce battle over control of the land. The bodies of the dead soldiers left behind at Devil’s Den went unburied for many days while some may have even been left behind in some of the deep cracks in between the rocks.

Before the Battle of Gettysburg, it is believed that the area was a Native American hunting ground where the Battle of the Crows took place. Like Gettysburg, a massive amount of people died in this battle.

There have been rumors of unnatural and supernatural sights and sounds coming from Devil’s Den dating back to the time of the early settlers who claimed to have seen the spirits of Native American chiefs roaming around the area as well as from the Confederate soldiers who were left to stand guard in front of the boulders at night. More recently, people have reported seeing the ghost of a man with long hair hanging around the rocks.

The Devil’s Den is located below Little Round Top and is a well-preserved section of the Gettysburg Battlefield. The entire area is managed by the National Park Service as part of Gettysburg National Military Park. At the time of writing, this section of the park is closed for rehabilitation so make sure to check the NPS website for up-to-date information before you go.

3. Eastern State Penitentiary: Philadelphia

Known for being the most famous and expensive prison in the world, the Eastern State Penitentiary is a massive Gothic building that had running water and central heating years before the White House. When it was built, it was one of the most expensive buildings in the entire United States, and people from around the world would visit the penitentiary as a tourist attraction.

The Eastern State Penitentiary opened its doors more than 180 years ago in 1829. It was designed to promote rehabilitation through “confinement in solitude with labor.” The theory behind this was that solitude would make prisoners regretful. Contact between prisoners was strictly prohibited, and contact between prisoners and guards was also minimized.

Despite being hopelessly ineffective, the system of confinement wasn’t completely abandoned until 1913. The prison was once home to notorious criminals including Al Capone and Slick Willie Sutton before finally closing its doors in 1971. It’s now a National Historic Landmark and is one of the most famous prisons in the world.

Thanks to its long history and creepy architecture, the Eastern State Penitentiary has been featured on numerous TV shows. It’s famous for being one of the most haunted locations in the country and attracts dozens of paranormal researchers every year. Stories abound about echoing voices, shadowy figures, and ghostly faces. Many visitors have reported seeing the silhouette of a guard in one of the towers, while others claim to have heard footsteps walking through the empty halls.

You can visit the Eastern State Penitentiary on a self-guided or guided tour. During these tours, you can see inside the cell blocks where more than 85,000 prisoners were held and the empty guard towers above them. Tours are held during the day all year long, and there are also Summer Twilight night tours held during the summer months. Additionally, they offer themed Halloween tours which are an immersive experience including the standard historical tour, themed bars and lounges, live performances, and more. Make sure to check their website for more details!

4. Betsy Ross House: Philadelphia

Situated just a few blocks away from Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, the Betsy Ross House may not be one of Philadelphia’s most famous attractions, but it may just be one of the most haunted ones!

The Haunted History

The Betsy Ross House was built more than 250 years ago. As the name suggests, it was the home of Betsy Ross during the Revolutionary War as Americans and British were fighting on the battlefields. It was while she was living here that she designed and sewed the first-ever American flag. During the next century, the house was both a residence and a place of business for many different owners, and it served as everything from a shoemaker to a tavern.

Thanks to the actions of concerned citizens during the late 1800s who made an effort to save the home, it’s one of the few houses surviving from the colonial era. They were able to restore the house by the late 1930s, and it was officially opened as a tourist attraction in 1937.

Flash forward to 1980, two security guards got into an argument in the basement of the house which ended with one of them shooting the other and leaving them to die on the basement floor. According to records, one of the former owners also died in the room that is currently the director’s office.

Visitors and staff of the Betsy Ross House have claimed to hear disembodied voices coming from the basement. In addition, they’ve also said they feel a dark presence in the parlor room where Betsy Ross met with the U.S. flag committee and have seen her ghost crying at the foot of the bed in the basement. Other people have heard voices and felt someone touching them in the director’s office. Paranormal investigators later confirmed the presence of multiple ghosts on the property.

You can visit the Betsy Ross House as part of a guided tour. During the tour, you’ll see artifacts and documents related to Betsy’s life. Tours are led by historical interpreters who explain the significance of the items and Ross’s legacy. Although they aren’t ghost tours per se, they do give you the chance to explore the home, and you never know what you’ll encounter while you’re there!

While you’re in downtown Philadelphia , make sure to check out our “ Philly Frights Ghost Hunt .” This hunt will take you past some of the city’s oldest landmarks as you learn about the tragic lives and deaths of its citizens.

5. The Old Jail Museum: Jim Thorpe

The Old Jail Museum is housed in a historic brick building that stands imposingly over the town of Jim Thorpe in Central Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains.

The Haunted History and Paranormal Activity

Built in 1871, the Old Jail Museum was an old prison where seven members of a secret union of Irish coal miners, known as the Molly Maguires, were executed in the late 1870s. Although the building closed as a jail in the mid-1990s, it has been restored and reopened as a haunted attraction.

Here, you’ll find reconstructed gallows and the handprint left behind by one of the executed prisoners. Although the wall has been cleaned and painted numerous times throughout history, the handprint keeps coming back as a reminder of the miserable fates of the condemned and their never-ending declaration of innocence.

You can visit the Old Jail Museum and see the gallows, dungeons, and cell blocks where the Molly Maguires spent their final days. The experience is certainly spooky, and you’re likely to leave feeling a sense of remorse for the prisoners that were kept there.

6. Mishler Theater: Altoona

One of the most famous buildings in Altoona, this magical theater has stood for over a century and provided endless hours of entertainment for local residents.

The Mishler Theater was opened in 1907 in the small city of Altoona, located about halfway between Pittsburgh and State College. The theater features a gorgeous Beaux-Arts stage that once functioned as a movie theater and a host to Vaudeville performances. It was named after the owner Isaac Charles Mishler who was born in Lancaster, PA, and when it opened, it had all the state-of-the-art amenities available including an early air-conditioning system and seating for up to 2,000 people.

The Mishler Theater is one of Altoona’s gems, and no one loved it more than its owner. It’s said that Mishler himself still haunts the theater. He even tends to befriend theater employees and visitors, telling them about the history of the theater and watching them work.

The theater is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and it still showcases local theater groups and performers today. Check out their website for a full schedule of events

7. Haunted Hill View Manor: New Castle

Haunted Hill View Manor is the site of a former nursing home and a massive complex spanning more than 80,000 square feet.

Originally known as the Lawrence County Home for the Aged, Hill View Manor was home to the county’s elderly, destitute, and mentally ill residents. The facility was opened in 1926, and hundreds of patients lived and died there until it finally closed its doors in 2004.

Due to many occurrences of paranormal activity over the years, this old nursing home is considered to be one of the most haunted locations in Western Pennsylvania. Visitors have reported hearing voices, doors slamming, and footsteps as well as things moving on their own. There have also numerous ghost sightings.

You can visit Haunted Hill View Manor as part of a guided tour or a paranormal investigation. Both options leave you plenty of time to explore the building on your own, so make sure to keep your camera out in case you catch any ghostly sightings!

8. Pennhurst Asylum: Spring City

Once known as the Pennhurst State School and the Eastern Pennsylvania State Institution for the Feeble-Minded and Epileptic, the Pennhurst Asylum was built to house people suffering from physical and mental health issues in the southeastern corner of Pennsylvania. The asylum opened at the start of the 20th century in 1908 and closed in 1987. The complex consisted of dining halls, store rooms, kitchens, cottages, power stations, and laundries as well as the main housing units. It had more than 30 buildings.

Despite the grandeur of the campus, the Pennhurst Asylum had a dark side. Patients were treated terribly and lived in hellish conditions while the complex was understaffed and dirty. In 1974, a class action lawsuit was filed on behalf of the inmates stating that their rights were violated, and the U.S. District Court found the facility was overcrowded and was unable to care for residents properly which resulted in patients being subjected to physical restraints, psychotropic drugs, and seclusion rooms. In 1983, nine employees were even charged with beating and slapping patients. When the complex finally closed in 1987, many of the buildings were left abandoned and have begun to decay.

Due to the large amount of suffering that took place there, it’s strongly believed that the site is haunted and that there are lingering spirits who still roam around the buildings. Visitors and staff members have reported hearing slamming doors, the sounds of crying and vomiting, and disembodied footsteps and voices. People have also seen apparitions including one of a little girl that seems to be lost.

The asylum was purchased and transformed into a seasonal haunted attraction that is open during the fall. However, you can still visit the asylum and adjacent museum for daytime tours that focus on the history of the property or for overnight paranormal tours.

Is Old Parliament House Canberra's most haunted building?

At least, that's what some people who have attended the Museum of Australian Democracy's latest after-dark experience believe.

The Old Haunted House Experience sees Canberrans walk the halls of the national institution, armed with various ghost-hunting equipment including an EMF (electric magnetic field) reader and divining rods in search of the paranormal.

"We don't want to influence anyone. We don't want them to walk away from here thinking that we've told them that they're going to see a ghost, or that they will see one," Museum of Australian Democracy 's volunteer and museum experience coordinator Trent Winter-Perry says.

"But by using the instruments, such as the divining rods, EMF readers, spirit boxes, etc, we're ghost hunting, basically.

"It gives a bit of credence to what we're doing and visitors can leave here having made up their own minds about whether they think the building is haunted or not by the readings that they get from these particular instruments."

According to Winter-Perry, an Old Parliament House-based supernatural belief is not completely unfounded.

Aside from the building being ranked in the top 35 most haunted buildings in the world by US publication Travel + Leisure last year, Winter-Perry says there have been unexplained sightings and events for almost as long as the building has been around.

One of the most well-known apparitions that security guards and other night-time attendees have claimed to have seen has been dubbed the Minister of Murder.

It's thought to be Thomas Ley, a former NSW state parliamentarian who transitioned into federal politics to become the minister of justice from 1922 to '25. It was during that time that he signed off on various death sentences.

However, it was his actions outside of parliament that were more intriguing. Ley was often surrounded by suspicions with many believing he was involved in some shady deals, particularly after a man who helped fund his election campaigns was found dead.

But it was a second man's death that would be the undoing for Ley. In March 1947, the former politician was convicted and sentenced to death for arranging the murder of John McBain Mudie - a barman who Ley believed was sleeping with his mistress. Ley was originally sentenced to death, but three days before he was due to be hanged, his sentence was commuted because he was deemed mentally unstable. He died a short time later in an asylum.

"When he came into federal politics, it was believed that he desired to become prime minister," Winter-Perry says.

"And as such, it is believed that he hangs around the government party room in this building, and often we can see his apparition appear late at night in that area."

But Winter-Perry's favourite unexplained story has to do with some wet footprints that have appeared outside of the old prime minister's suite after dark various times.

Grainy photographic evidence of the mysterious footprints - captured by a security guard in 2014 - is shown during the tour.

"It's appeared quite a number of times, and it could be a bit of a stretch, but it's believed that it's actually [former prime minister] Harold Holt trying to find his office," Winter-Perry says.

Then-prime minister Harold Holt disappeared while swimming off the Victorian coast in 1967.

It seems the number of ghostly inhabitants may just be growing. Winter-Perry says since the restoration works were completed following the fire set by protesters in 2021, several people have reported seeing an apparition of a man running through King's Hall out of the House of Representatives chamber.
