You Must See the Interior of this Gypsy Style Trailer Remodel

This gypsy trailer interior (and exterior) is something to behold!

Introduction: An Eclectic Gypsy Style Remodel

Are you a wandering nomad who loves mixing vintage and found objects to create an eclectic yet comforting space to call home? You may be onto something.

While the rest of the world embraces minimalism, the gypsy style embodies “maximalism.”

camper exterior

At this year’s Trailerfest Vintage Camper Trailers Rally at Camp Fimfo in Waco, Texas, I met Dusty and Cory Caswell and their gypsy-renovated 1963 Shasta Compact. Only 11 feet long overall, they lovingly spared no expense in their detailed renovation.

Exterior Details

Beginning with the outside of the trailer, they specifically wanted to have the 1950s retro vibe while keeping with the theme of being uniquely theirs.

Painting Custom Exterior Colors

camper exterior

They found an auto paint detailer and mixed their own custom colors of paint on the outside (even naming the peach color “Camper Putty”). With thousands of color variations to choose from, Dusty said, “Don’t be afraid to try a few different shades to get it just right.”

Unique Camper Screen Door

When you first open the door, you immediately notice that they inlaid a gorgeous patterned lace on the screen door to the camper entry.

camper screen door

They call this “The Magic Door.” You can build one similar for your own rig by watching their  YouTube video .

Gypsy Trailer Interior Design

One of the things you notice right away is the layers on layers of textures and fabric of seemingly different colors.

gypsy inspired kitchen

Every square inch of this trailer has a story to tell, and we’ll start with the galley.

gypsy inspired kitchen

This kitchen sink was taken from a 20-year-old mobile home that was about to be demolished.

Dusty loved the color and knew it would go perfectly with her palette for this renovation.

Do you see how it’s set at an angle? She did this on purpose to allow for as much counter-space as possible.

Copper Hammered Countertop

gypsy inspired kitchen

The copper countertop was hammered by hand, and she had someone professionally mold the top to the frame of the counter. You can do something similar by following this   tutorial.

Dusty explained there are different acid washes to use to get the specific patina you want for your divots (from shiny to dull).

Here’s another  YouTube video   showing 5 different recipes for adding patina to copper metal.

Mixed metals? No problem! Dusty likes incorporating all types of metals to give her designs a unique flair.

Living Space

Wait, what’s under those arms on that hinged door?

air conditioner

Would you believe it’s an air conditioner?

Dusty and Cory wanted something other than a window-mounted AC, which would be too modern for their style. Instead, they opted for a 14,000 BTU unit and hid it underneath the kitchen counter. Sure, they sacrificed some storage space, but with this door open, you get the full blast of air inconspicuously.

You can get a similar one through  Amazon.  You will need to vent it, which they did by running the pipe underneath the cabinet and venting it out the side of the trailer.

BLACK+DECKER Air Conditioner, 14,000 BTU Air Conditioner Portable for Room up to 700 Sq. Ft. with Remote Control, White

  • Portable AC: Use this personal air conditioner (16.5” x 14.06” x 27.09”) in rooms up to 700 sq. ft. Stay cool in the hot summer months and sleep well with this BLACK+DECKER ac unit for bedroom.

air conditioner

Keeping with the vintage vibe, they hid the air conditioner with an old cast iron fireplace grill they found.

Dusty said they could still see the white parts of the unit, so she covered the back of the grill with fabric and made a skirt that extended underneath the grill to hide it completely.

Gypsy Fabric Touches

Speaking of fabric… It may seem that the layering of fabrics and textures throughout the trailer was done haphazardly; however, Dusty explains the care and effort involved to achieve the final result.

She uses a color wheel chart similar to  this one  to find the undertones that will go together well. The colors she focused on for this renovation were greens, burgundy, mustard yellow, and peach, some of her favorite colors, all with the same undertone.

Interior Ceiling

The entire ceiling of the camper is covered with ruched fabric that Dusty painstakingly sewed together (she recommends doing this in pieces or panels) and then tacked trim to a backing board to keep the fabric in place.

Gypsy trailer celiing

Seating Area with Velvet Cushions and Buttons

For the bench side of the trailer, Dusty covered a cushion with velvet and added another unique touch of sewing in buttons that she took from her grandmother’s and great-grandmother’s clothes!

What a great way to honor your loved ones by literally sewing their mementos into your trailer’s fabric! You can watch the video of how Dusty does this  here .

Gypsy trailer interior sitting space

Sleeping Space with Custom Mattress

The inside of this Compact Shasta is only 9 feet long. Usually, the mattress would be horizontal along the far end of the trailer. However, Dusty wanted a walkway down the middle of her trailer.

The problem was a regular twin mattress wouldn’t fit.

She found a European mattress (which is 2 inches shorter) and used that to fit perfectly in the space.

Final Touches

Beadboard paneling.

Did you notice the beadboard wood paneling throughout the trailer? They used single beadboard wall panels, cutting and shaping them to fit the curves of the trailer.

Like this look? Replicate it with beadboard wallpaper:

Graham & Brown Paintable Beadboard Wallpaper White

  • This Pre-Pasted Bead Board Wallpaper Gives The Beautiful, Streamline Effect Of Bead Board Without All Of The Work

The back windows of Shasta trailers generally leak, so they are strengthened with plumbing tape before putting the board over the top.

  • Teflon tape has a sealing function to prevent the leakage of water or gas.

beadboard

They finished their design by putting hand-carved wooden trim around the top of the beadboard, painting it with nearly 20 different layers of paint colors and oil rub to capture the highlights and lowlights.

Custom Light Fixtures

Gypsy trailer lighting

Underneath that custom trip, do you see the hanging lights?

Well, those are regular lamp bases given to Dusty, which she repurposed by turning them upside down and mounting them to the top of the trailer. She added her signature trim and hung the lampshades to hide the light element from view.

Each light has its own chain link so that she can turn only the lamps on that she needs for reading or ambiance. For added flair, Dusty recommends draping jewelry from the lampshades!

Using Found Objects as Decor

Whether you visit your local antique market, thrift store, or have heirlooms tucked away in the attic, found objects add a unique character and whimsy to your trailer.

Using them keeps with the true gypsy spirit as nearly every object in a gypsy wagon is either a reminder or a gift from a loved one. Apparently, it is also very bad to give any of those gifts away (which could be an issue for trailer weight, depending on the size or amount of gifts!).

Found Objects

Dusty has a music section of old instruments:

As well as a tea section:

Conclusion: Gypsy-Inspired Trailer Remodel

Gypsy style is all about your own personal expression! Try incorporating some of this into your modern trailer for something different.

You can always contact Dusty and Cory for questions or advice; they love sharing their process. You can find them on  Facebook  or see more of their videos from renovating this trailer on their  YouTube  channel.

Custom interiors.

roadgypsywagons-interior

The interiors can be customized in a variety of ways. Inspired by the original Romani vardo , Road Gypsy Wagons decided to specialize in simple designs with high-quality materials.

Each of the wagons can sleep two adults and can be customized and personalized. In addition, they are also easy to tow and the two smallest designs can fit inside a standard garage.

Their smallest trailer, the Holiday

roadgypsywagons-holiday2

The smallest design is the Holiday . Coming in at 4×6 feet and only 600 lb., the Holiday can be towed by a 4-cylinder vehicle and has room inside for a double convertible bed and small sink.

gypsy wagon

A full Holiday wagon costs $2,650 to purchase, but plans and kit parts are also available for much less. You can even order an electric kit with a 12-watt solar panel , ports and wiring for $160. The exterior can be detailed and painted any way you want.

The next size up is the 5×8 foot Makation .

This wagon only weighs 800 lb. and can be ordered pre-built for $4,250.

The optional interior kit costs $410 and includes a convertible bed/bench combination and two cabinets for a sink and cooking area.

wagons

The largest design is the Sabbatical.

The largest Road Gypsy Wagon is the Sabbatical . It is 6×10 feet and weighs 1,400 lb. With a little more room inside this camper, the interior has more flexibility and can fit a small kitchen counter with drawers and a table and chair for indoor dining.

roadgypsywagons-sabbatical2

None of the wagon designs come with bathrooms, but the interior layouts are completely up to each customer.

The wagons can also include fun details like round windows and traditional shutters.

roadgypsywagons-detail-window

The wagons are designed with stock materials that are easily found in any hardware store. The traditional curved roof which gives each gypsy wagon its distinct look can be ordered as a pre-cut kit from the company.

The roof also mimics the historic vardo with a 12-ounce canvas cloth covering encapsulated with waterproof glue and pro-industrial paint by Sherwin Williams. This type of roof is also known as “ poor man’s fiberglass.”

Each gypsy wagon is built on a standard utility trailer (not included in the kits) and a full manual and set of plans are available. For more information, see their website Road-Gypsy.com .

RV LIFE

Gypsy Wagon RV Glamping Revives Ancient Woodworking Art

' src=

  • RV Lifestyle

Wandering gypsies have always known about the joys of taking your house wherever you roam. Today, two craftsmen are revamping these nomad’s “vardo” structures into luxury gypsy wagon getaways.

Gypsy Wagon RV

The gypsies knew RVs could also be round.

RVs are more luxurious than ever before. But one old fashioned design is making a comeback too.

Gypsy Wagon RV

Gypsy wagon RVs have cozy basics.

The elaborate horse-drawn gypsy wagon “vardo” caravans were one popular in the late 1800s by the nomadic British Romani people.

Woodworkers and the general public consider these decorated wooden wagons masterpieces. Over the last century, however, they faded from the public eye.

Today two west coast woodworkers are bringing vardo wagons back from the brink. Gypsy Getaway Wagons in Reno, Nevada and Sauna Surround You of Arcata, California are designing custom wooden works of art for an offbeat RVing experience.

Not your typical Burning Man RV

“It is meant to give people a way to bring art and nature into their much too frazzled lives,” says Gypsy Getaway Wagon’s founder, Jeff Deming.

Each year his gypsy wagon RV rentals stand out among the hundreds of conventional RVs at Burning Man , the annual art festival in the Nevada desert.

Gypsy Wagon RV

Have a sauna experience anywhere.

Deming is a former hospitality industry executive who today collaborates with three other artisans to create the unforgettable, funky gypsy wagon RV structures.

“I have been approached regarding high end western themed wagons. I have been approached with all kinds of themes actually, some of which are not fit for print! The design process is fun and we will do most any theme someone can envision. Each one is unique,” he explains.

A custom glamping wagon of your own starts at $18,800. But if you’re short on cash, you can rent one for as low as $69 per night or up to $149 per night on a summer weekend.

“Rates vary by season just as a hotel room would,” says Deming. He tows his gypsy wagon RV rentals all over the west for customers seeking a different kind of glamping experience.

Feedback from Deming’s customers is all positive. “The only complaint that I occasionally do get is that people can’t have a quiet drink at the end of the day if they are in a campground as everyone else in the campground wants to take a look inside!” he says.

Relax in nature with a wood fired rental sauna

Early gypsy wagon builders could never imagine that today, these rolling masterpieces would house luxuries like a mobile sauna. But the sky’s the limit for modern builders like Jeremy Chapman of Sauna Surround You. His mobile wood-fired dry saunas go everywhere from private events in the Northern California redwood forests to music festivals, art gatherings and even overseas.

The Arcata-based master carpenter builds every mobile sauna with Western red cedar and other high end materials. He started with one in 2014 and today builds at least a dozen each year. They coast about $275 a day for renters or as much as $15,000 for a custom-built creations.

If you rent one of his wood or propane fired portable saunas, extra luxuries are available. “We also offer ‘Sauna Tenders’ that help to create the perfect healing ambiance while sauna bathers use the sauna providing eucalyptus oils and towels. They also keep the sauna fire lit and the sauna comfortable and inviting,” Chapman explains.

Gypsy Wagon RV

Rent a gypsy wagon RV sauna.

When creating custom saunas, Chapman strives to match his clients’ design wishes with their values, passions and personalities.

“For instance choosing stained glass or colors to bring their sauna into alignment with their particular interests.

I work one on one with my clients to ensure they receive a unique and carefully crafted piece of functional and purposeful art that (although) built by me, reflects their own inner nature,” he explains.

Builders like Deming and Chapman are two innovative builders proving that RV glamping is so much more than just a cozy place to sleep—it’s an experience.

A Stormy Night

In yesterday’s blog I told you we had storms two days in a row, and that as I wrote the blog about 11 PM the power was off. About midnight it came back on, and our generator automatically shut down like it’s supposed to. But then a couple of minutes after midnight the power went out again and the generator started back up. It was a little after 6 AM when the power finally came on and stayed on.

Fortunately, the storm system moved out of state and yesterday morning was bright and sunny, and the day was hot. During the afternoon I went out to the barn and plugged a tire on the Husqvarna riding mower that had gone flat. We need to mow but the grass was still too wet after two days of rain.

After I fixed the tire, I went back to the house and asked Terry to come out to the barn with me because I wanted to get under the bush hog and cut off the last of the twine from old hay bales I had gotten wrapped around the blades. I used the tractor’s bucket to tip the mower up on its side to give me room to get to the blades, and even though I was confident the bucket would hold it in place, I wanted Terry to be there just in case something went wrong. Fortunately, it didn’t, and it only took a couple of minutes for me to cut everything away.

We’ll have more heat for the rest of the week, and actually for the rest of the summer, but at least it’s not supposed to rain again until Sunday or Monday. Hopefully we can take advantage of it staying light in the evenings to get some mowing done.

Be sure to enter our latest Free Drawing . This week’s prize is an autographed copy of Callie And Natalie’s Dutch Family History by Darlene Miller. When nine-year-old Callie and her five-year-old sister Natalie go to Pella, Iowa with their grandmother, they wear period dresses as they learn about their fourth, fifth, and sixth great-grandparents, who arrived in Pella in 1847. Other true Dutch stories are about more great-grandparents who immigrated in the early 1900s. Enjoy their experiences as they see, hear, and taste “all things Dutch” as they travel through Pella.

And finally, here’s a chuckle to start your day from the collection of funny signs we see in our travels and that our readers share with us. Where are these people shopping?
