Chicago Tours
Chicago is a sprawling city, comprised of dozens of neighborhoods with unique characteristics and singular attractions. It can be hard to approach exploring the city without an insider’s knowledge of the best way to get to Wicker Park, or the top pizza place in River North. Fortunately, there’s a wide variety of tours available in Chicago to help visitors make the most of their time in the city while easily navigating the best attractions, areas, and cuisines.
For first-time visitors, bus tours are a smart option. They can help you see more of the city than you would be able to via mass transit (without some very complex planning, that is). Bus tours also allow you to see the highlights of the city via a pre-planned route that maximizes sightseeing potential and minimizes driving time. Hop-on hop-off options are key here, too, as they facilitate exploring the city at your own pace, and visiting attractions that pique your interest from the bus. There are even themed bus tours that cover topics like food, drink, and Chicago culture.
Chicago boasts many types of tours beyond the typical bus tour, however. If you’d like to experience Lake Michigan or the Chicago River – two essential components to the city’s identity – then a boat tour is a smart option. You can choose a tour that simply showcases the lake, or one that highlights city architecture. Visitors can also opt to explore the via bike: take a guided tour or explore on your own. Given that Chicago is a very walkable city, it’s unsurprising that another popular type of tour is a walking tour. These are usually themed around a concept like food, drink, pop culture, local legends, and more. The Chicago Architecture Center also runs many architecture-specific tours, and many companies offer guided tours (on foot or via bus) related to culinary concepts.
Whatever kind of tour you’re interested in, you’ll find a number of excellent options in Chicago. Here’s an overview of the most popular tour types in Chicago.
The classic option for exploring Chicago, bus tours come in a variety of styles ranging from guided tours of the North and South Sides to fully-narrated hop-on hop-off tours.
With Lake Michigan and the Chicago River being so important to the city, it’s no surprise that you can tour the city via boat. Choose a theme, or just enjoy the sail.
Explore the city in an eco-friendly way by making your way through the parks and trails of Chicago on two wheels. Take a self-guided tour, or opt for the full experience.
Walking Tours
In spite of its massive size, Chicago is the ideal city for a walking tour. Explore a neighborhood, a theme, a concept, or a story on these guided excursions.

Private Tour Coordinator and Tour Guide
There is no shortage of things to discover in Chicago—I love being an urban explorer and uncovering its hidden places. I have an MA in Public History from Loyola University Chicago, and I have worked as a museum educator and kindergarten teacher. My desire to learn new things fuels my passion for educating others, which I get to experience every day as a Chicago tour guide. I live in the northern neighborhood of Rogers Park.
Whether you are a first-time visitor or a lifelong resident, the vibrant history and modern majesty of Chicago never ceases to amaze. I’m a graduate of Columbia College with an M.A. in Interdisciplinary Art. I’ve worked for many years as an educator at City Colleges of Chicago. As tour guide at Chicago Detours, I integrate my enthusiasm for culture and architecture with my passion as an educator. West Town/Noble Square area is home for me.
With our Chicago neighborhoods, vibrant cultural institutions and nearly two centuries of larger-than-life stories, there’s never a dull moment here! I’m a fifth generation Chicagoan and a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis. In addition to guiding tours, I’m a creative writer and amateur genealogist. I also enjoy the city’s dynamic theater scene. You can also read overlooked stories from 19th-century newspapers on my “Second Glance History” blog. I live in River North.
Chicago is unique as it always evolves into the future while holding on to the past. I’m fascinated by how people latch on to old architecture but happily pave over others. My background is in theater and performance and I’ve been a tour guide here for more than 10 years. Currently I’m finishing my Master’s in Public History at Loyola University because I love to teach the history of this scrappy city. I’m in the Edgewater neighborhood.
Operations Coordinator and Tour Guide
Chicago’s history is so fascinating, you could spend a lifetime uncovering its secrets…I’m willing to give it a try! I have an M.A. in US History from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and then pursued doctoral studies in Urban History at the University of Illinois at Chicago. I love to learn new aspects of Chicago’s rich history and then share my knowledge as a tour guide with Chicago Detours. I live in Ravenswood.
Content Manager and Tour Guide
Chicago has so many neighborhoods, buildings, and by-ways that it’s hard to go long without seeing something new, or something familiar from a new angle. I studied Cinema History for my M.A. from the University of Chicago. I’ve worked as a culture writer for various publications and as an educator of the humanities at the City Colleges of Chicago. I’m thrilled to share my love of this city’s busy past and unique architectural spaces with Chicago Detours. I live in the Chicago neighborhood of Lincoln Park.

Sights along the Chicago Riverwalk
This tour will explore the Chicago Riverwalk including the incredible architecture and tourist hot spots in the area.
Be sure to also check our selection of self-guided tours of Chicago.
The Chicago River which is connected to Lake Michigan is a huge source of pride for Chicago.
Along the banks, there is a riverwalk path which offers amazing views of some of Chicago’s famous skyscrapers.
More recently, the Riverwalk has become a tourist destination, offering food, drink, and shops along the banks, as well as art installations and fountains!
If interested, please join us for our guided Chicago Riverwalk and History tour which will cover some different destinations on the Riverwalk.
Check out the calendar to see when the next tour takes place.
1. Goddess and the Baker
225 N. LaSalle St.
This tour will begin at Goddess and the Baker which is a local cafe established in 2015 in Chicago.
It is known for locally roasted coffee and baked goods and is at the corner of LaSalle St. and Upper Wacker Dr. which runs along the River. So grab a coffee, tea, or snack!
Pro Tips: They have a public restroom. Also, try the rainbow cake. You will not be disappointed!
Cross Upper Wacker Dr. north to get closer to the Chicago River.
2. Eastland Disaster Memorial
South end of LaSalle St. Bridge; North-East corner of the intersection
After you cross the street, you will see a plaque commemorating the Eastland Disaster.
On July 24, 1915, more than 800 people lost their lives on the S.S. Eastland which capsized before leaving the dock.
The boat was about to depart for a company planned picnic day but instead killed more passengers than the Titanic.
To learn more about this, sign up for our guided Haunting History Tour.
Look across the River past the Eastland sign directly to see the Reid Murdoch Building.
3. Reid Murdoch Building
325 N. LaSalle St.
Across the river, you will see the red brick facade and decorative terra-cotta of the Reid Murdoch building.
Designed by George C. Nimmons in 1914, it was originally the country’s largest wholesale grocer.
Many of the building's floors were dedicated to making and processing cheeses, ketchup, coffee, and pickles, among other things.
In 1915, it became a make-shift hospital for victims of the Eastland Disaster. It was added to the National Register of Historic places in 1975.
Today, it houses businesses and restaurants but really shines at night with incredible lighting that shows off the building.
Look across the river to the left of North LaSalle Street Bridge, you will see a very large industrial looking building with a green pyramid shaped roof.
4. Merchandise Mart
222 W. Merchandise Mart Plaza
This iconic and enormous art-deco office building was constructed in 1930 by Alfred Shaw who envisioned combining: the warehouse, the skyscraper, and the department store.
Marshall Field & Co. set up shop at the beginning to create a central hub for retailers. At the time, it was the largest building in the world.
The view from the river is incredible, but consider exploring inside. Find the lobby which features a chevron motif with Jules Guerin’s frieze of murals.
Also in 2019, Art on the Mart was born! This is an enormous, block-sized light and projection show that takes place nightly on the building. Check it out!
Now walk down the large staircase just next to the Eastland Disaster Memorial. At the bottom of the stairs begin walking east (to your right).
5. Chicago Water Taxi LaSalle/Clark Stop
On the River between LaSalle St. and Clark St.
While walking down the stairs, you may see a Chicago Water Taxi waiting along the river at this spot.
This is one of the places you can hitch a ride with the Chicago Water Taxi!
There are 7 stops that all run along the Chicago River:
The Ogilvie/Union (West Loop), Michigan Ave, River North, Chicago Riverwalk (LaSalle/Clark), Goose Island, Chinatown, and Chicago Ave.
A unique way to get around Chicago is to buy a Water Taxi pass. An All-Day Pass is $10 and gives you unlimited rides.
Alternatively, a one-way ticket costs $6. Check out their site for more details about commuting via a water taxi.
Continue walking east along the Riverwalk
6. Riverwalk Restaurants and Shops
Between LaSalle and State St.
During the warmer months, you will start to notice a hustle and bustle of cafes, bars, and shops!
This is the section of the Riverwalk to indulge in an ice cream cone, a glass of wine, or enjoy a beer while sitting and watching the kayaks float by.
There are loads of options, but for the convenience of this route, we recommended Tiny Tapp & Cafe.
Continue walking east along the Riverwalk. Stop and take a look across the river at the two very tall identical cylindrical towers.
7. Marina Towers
300 N. State St
Marina Towers were designed by Bertrand Goldberg in 1959 and were built to be apartments and condos and remain that way today.
Marina Towers are among the most recognized buildings in Chicago due to many appearances in commercials and films.
The towers are noted for their high-speed elevators! It takes about 35 seconds from the lobby to the 61st floor.
Continue walking east along the Riverwalk.
8. Vietnam Memorial
330 Chicago Riverwalk
On your right, you will come across the Vietnam Memorial which was replaced and rededicated in 2015 to honor all members of the U.S. Armed Services who served in Vietnam.
The sculpture above the walkway was designed by Gary Tillery who was a Vietnam veteran.
Directly across the river from the Memorial you will see a very tall glass tower with the name TRUMP written across it.
9. Trump International Hotel and Tower
401 N. Wabash Ave.
Built in 2008, this 339 room hotel is the fourth tallest building in the US.
It was designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, who also designed Chicago’s famous Willis Tower and the John Hancock Center.
The hotel’s façade features stainless steel and iridescent-tinted glass and offers guests panoramic views of the city skyline, Lake Michigan and the Chicago River
The hotel was featured in the movie Dark Knight (2008) and Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon (2011).
Continue walking east along the Riverwalk.
10. McCormick Bridgehouse & Chicago River Museum
99 Chicago Riverwalk
This landmark five-story bridge house has been housing the Chicago Bridge Museum since 2016.
There are exhibits on the Chicago River and the famous bascule bridges.

When you come off the bridge continue along N. Wabash Ave.
CROSS THE DU SABLE BRIDGE ( write about it)

11. The Wrigley Building
400-410 Michigan Ave.
Built in 1921 to house the headquarters of the Wrigley chewing gum company, this was the first major office building north of the Chicago River.
It was also Chicago's first air-conditioned office building. This skyscraper is 30 floors tall rising to 450 feet (135 meters).
The clock tower was inspired by the Giralda tower of Seville's Cathedral.
Its faces are 19 feet, seven inches wide. There are actually offices inside the clock!
12. Apple Store
401 N. Michigan Ave.
Across the River, you will see a modern glass building designed by Foster and Partners which opened in 2017.
It is a global flagship Apple store and the design is quite a site to see.
The building is made of glass which allows the patrons in the building to look out and see the magnificent Chicago River without interruption.
The Apple Store is like a modern-day trading post which is perfect since it is on the very spot of the original trading post of Chicago.
Jean Bapiste DuSable who was the founder and first resident of Chicago had his home and trading post in what we call Pioneer Court (a.k.a. Directly next to the Apple Store).
Pro Tip: This Apple store offers free classes! Check their website to sign up.
Across the street you will see the Tribune Tower.
13. Tribune Tower
435 N. Michigan Ave.
In 1922, the Chicago Tribune held a worldwide design contest for the “most beautiful and distinctive office building in the world.”
The result was this iconic, neo-gothic gem. From its completion in 1925 to 2018, the building housed the Chicago Tribune headquarters.
The tower is, at its highest point, 463 feet (139 meters) tall.
The upper tower has flying buttresses and the lower tower, made of limestone, is embedded with stones from international monuments like Notre-Dame, the Great Wall of China, Taj Mahal, St. Peter’s Basilica, the Berlin Wall, and many more.
There is even a piece of the moon in the tower’s wall!
14. Billy Goat Tavern
430 Michigan Ave.
Directions: Cross the Columbus Street bridge heading north. Pause on the bridge to take in the view.
15. View From the Bridge (William P. Fahey Bridge)
Middle of Columbus St. Bridge
On the South side of the River you will see tall hotels and condos like the Hyatt (1974) designed by A. Epstein and Sons, Swissotel (1989) designed by Harry Weese, and the Aqua building (2009) designed by Jeanne Gang as the tallest building designed by a female architect.
The newest addition to the South side of the River is 101 story Vista Towers which completed mid-2020 and officially beat the record of tallest building designed by a female architect by Jeanne Gang again!
On the North side, you will see the mirrored Trump Hotel in the distance which was designed by Skidmore, Ownings, and Merril in 2009.
To your right is the Sheridan Hotel and the Centennial Fountain at 400 N. McGlurg.
This fountain was dedicated in 1989 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the reversal of the Chicago River which happened in 1889.
Watch for the long stray which connects the north and south side at every hour.
Finish crossing the Columbus Street bridge heading north. Take a right and take the stairs back down to the Riverwalk. You will pass the Sheraton on your left and get a closer view of the Centennial Fountain. Take a left at McClurg past the fountain.
16. Ogden Slip
435 E. Illinois St.
This small boat slip along commercial buildings used to be much more active when boat travel was more common. At one point this area was known as “North Pier” and had a hopping nightlife.
Now the commercial building houses a Target Express and a bowling alley!
While not exactly bustling, this quiet street in downtown Chicago serves as a pathway to one of the top tourist destinations: Navy Pier!
Continue heading North of McClurg and then take a right onto Illinois St. Head east on Illinois for about 10 minutes to reach the final destination: Navy Pier!
17. Navy Pier
600 E. Grand
The final destination on this self-guided tour is Chicago’s Navy Pier!
Navy Pier has come a long way since it was originally constructed in 1914 as the world’s largest Pier at 292 ft wide and 3000 ft long. (89m by 914m)
It is a great spot to grab lunch, dinner, or Chicago’s famous Rainbow cone. Please check out our self-guided tour for Navy Pier!

Take a Thrilling Speedboat Tour of Chicago on the Seadog
Did you know that those Seadog boats docked at Navy Pier can take you on a thrill ride? Neither did we!
We spent the afternoon in Chicago this past week and went on a thrilling speedboat tour through City Cruises. It was even more fun than we thought it would be and one for the summer bucket list .
We were invited to take a ride on the Seadog, but all opinions are my own.
The vibe on the Seadog is great with an upbeat tour guide named Connor and music blasting as we cruise to open water. He pointed out the working lighthouse, which I never noticed before.
Once you pass the no wake zone, the engines start up and are so powerful that it sounds like an airplane getting ready for takeoff. We were very impressed.
You first cruise towards the museum campus towards the south side of the city, darting to the right and left as water sprays up the sides of the boat and you feel like you are flying.
There were kids of all ages on the boat and tons of people had their hands in the air like we were on a rollercoaster ride. We were laughing with enjoyment as the wind blew through our hair.
When you get to the museum campus, the boat stops and the tour guide talks about everything the city has to offer. The thrill ride continued as we made out way past Navy Pier to the north side of the city for a view of 360 CHICAGO and the beaches.
Again, the boat idled and the tour guide told some jokes and talked about the city. He pointed out some highlights as opposed to being a history-heavy tour, which was perfect for us.
The ride was 30 minutes and the whole experience from boarding the boat, meeting the staff, darting around on the water, and interacting with the tour guide was great!
Some tips for your trip:
- It’s chilly on the water, so bring a sweatshirt. It was a high of 73 degrees on the day we went and my son with a bit cold with a t-shirt and shorts on.
- Be prepared to get wet. There were a couple people with ponchos on towards the front of the boat. I wouldn’t say we got that wet, but there was definitely a mist every time we switched directions.
- Bring a brush. The wind really whipped our hair around and we had to put our fingers through our hair several times to get the knots out.
- The music and microphone that the tour guide uses is loud, so please be aware if you have kids with noise sensitivities.
Boat Ride Options
We did the Seadog Lakefront Speedboat Tour, which is the least expensive option at $34 per person and dogs are welcome. If you just want the thrills without stopping between for the tour aspect, you can do the Seadog Extreme Thrill Ride for $45 per person. There are also architectural tours as well as special event rides, such as for the 4th of July fireworks and Air & Water Show.
Head to City Cruises for all the options and pricing. All of them leave from Navy Pier.
Make it a Combo Trip
Flyover Chicago is also at Navy Pier and Illuminarium just opened on June 28, 2024. My kids also enjoy walking around the fountain at Polk Bros Park, right outside the pier and stopping at the gift shops inside.
If you want to venture out from Navy Pier, you’re really not that far from 360 CHICAGO , which is north of Navy Pier, and Maggie Daley Park and Millennium Park, which is a little to the south.

7 things that might surprise you about the Chicago Architecture Boat Tour
T here are plenty of ways to take in the sights, sounds (and smells) of Chicago, but you don't necessarily have to be on land to do that.
And you don't have to be a tourist, either.
In fact, one of the most beloved ways — among locals and visitors alike — to experience city is by journeying across the Chicago River and Lake Michigan while a tour guide talks about buildings and regales you on the untold story of Mrs. O'Leary's cow.
In other words: a Chicago Architecture Boat Tour.
"As you're going up and down the Chicago River and on Lake Michigan, you're seeing the city’s evolving architecture, which is changing every year" said Andrew Sargis, director of sales and marketing for Wendella Tours and Cruises .
Wendella, billed as Chicago's "original" architecture tour, in 1935 gave its first architecture tour of the city from a wooden diesel yacht out on Navy Pier, Sargis said. Now, upwards of 20 architecture tours are offered daily, with more on the weekends. On average, Wendella tours see roughly 100,000 passengers each month over the summer, Sargis said.
And though the majority of guests on any given Wendella architecture tour are tourists, Sargis said, locals take them, too.
MORE: Even Chicagoans can't get enough of this tourist attraction: ‘It's about the only touristy thing I do'
"I was surprised when I first started, we get a lot of repeat locals," Bobby Scheffle, a Wendella tour guide told NBC Chicago. "And always there's a lot of local people that come on when they have guests visiting them in town. They like to show off the city this way."
But there's something else about the experience that makes it so very Chicago.
"I think it is really unique to experience the city from a boat on a river, because we think about other big cities in the United States -- there aren't many that have a river that go right through downtown," Scheffle said. "You feel like you're in the city, you hear the noise, and you see the buildings and all that."
Whether you're taking the ride for the first time or the 50th, bringing out-of-town guests out for a memorable activity or just itching to be a tourist in your own city, here are seven things to know about the Chicago Architecture Boat Tour.
Will weather stop a tour from running?
Wendella's architecture tours run year-round, Sargis said, although "weather is a factor."
Weather events like ice on the river or significant snowfall can impact operations, Sargis said, but they typically don't, since the Chicago River -- a federal waterway -- must remain navigable year-round.
While Wendella's boats do have climate-controlled indoor lounges, tours during the winter may run at limited times. But rain, snow, extreme heat or wind, unflappable Chicagoans still show up.
"We went on drizzly day a few years ago," Kathy Rambo wrote on NBC Chicago's Facebook page. "There were only about 10 of us on the boat!
And most often, the tour will run — rain or shine — so don't hesitate to bring a raincoat.
"I have certainly [given tours] under thunderstorms and downpours, and I've gotten drenched sometimes," Scheffle said. "I've never had a tour get canceled because no one bought a ticket. There's always someone wanting to come out here in the rain or the cold."
What's the best time of year (or day) to go?
It depends on when exactly your favorite time of the year is, and what you're hoping to see.
For Sargis, it's late summer. "There's this point of time in September when the weather is beautiful, but there's not that summer rush."
There are other times that Chicagoans may want to consider, too.
"St. Patrick's Day Celebration when they dye the river, and any Wednesday or Saturday night [over the summer], watching the fireworks over Lake Michigan , especially if you're local" Sargis said.
During the summer months, Wendella's tours run start as early as 9 a.m., with the day's final tour not ending until 10 p.m. or 11 p.m., Scheffle said, "so if you want to come for a ride to see the city lights, you can come late, and it's also beautiful, just a little more difficult to see the colors on the buildings if that's what you want to see."
Laura Pubins, who lives in a suburb outside of Chicago, agrees.
"My favorite one was when we were on a boat at sunset," Pubins wrote to NBC Chicago on Facebook. "It was an awesome new view of the city."
What's the most photogenic spot on the tour?
For Sargis, it's "anything out on Lake Michigan," with the skyline in the background.
On the river though, there's one moment that captures the city best, Scheffle said, no matter what time of day you're taking the trip.
"The best place to take a photo on the 90-minute river tour is when we come up the south branch from Chinatown," Scheffle said. "That's the best place because you get the whole skyline from the south. It's really beautiful."
For locals though, it may not be what you're looking at, so much as how you're looking at it.
"You're looking at [the city] from underneath," said Chicago resident Nick Pappas, 55, who recently found himself on a 90-minute river tour. "It's just a different perspective on the river that you don't get on the street level. As amazing as that sounds, you're only, like, 20 feet down, but it gives you a whole different perspective."
What does the training for a tour guide look like?
According to Sargis, all Wendella tour guides are trained in-house -- and the spots are competitive.
"There's high demand," Sargis said, of the position. "There are more people that want to be tour guides than space available. It's certainly a popular job, and people want to do it." While the tour guide of any given architecture tour isn't made public, many people do request certain ones for private events, Sargis said.
For the tours, there's a general script, with highlights that must be mentioned, Sargis said. But improvisation, along with sharing personal history is encouraged, too.
"All of the tour guides have their own experience in the city, and will add parts of their history in it," Sargis said. "We have a tour guide that is a retired police officer, and he will interject anecdotes form his career. We have a tour guide that's a Vietnam War Veteran, and when we go by the Vietnam War Memorial, he will always discuss the importance of it to him."
For Scheffle, the training included joining multiple tours a week for two weeks and flashcards.
"For a while, I, just drove Uber and Lyft," Scheffle said. "And then, I remembered that I really liked Chicago. I like learning fun facts about it. And there are people in the city that have that as a job -- to tell people fun facts about Chicago and I started looking into tourism jobs in the city."
What's the most common question tour guides get?
Believe it or not, it's not always about The Great Chicago Fire , or Mrs. O'Leary and her cow, at least on Scheffle's tours.
"My favorite thing on the tour that happens is probably when little kids ask questions," Scheffle said. "The common question that a kid will ask, because I talk about the tallest building, second tallest building, third tallest building, a lot of times a kid will ask what's the shortest building in Chicago? Which I don't have a good answer for."
Are you supposed to tip your guide?
"It's up to the discretion of the client," Sargis said. "I would say a lot of our passengers do tip our tour guides."
What's the absolute best part of the tour?
Sure the tour is photogenic, and the city's history is fascinating. And though some may go on the tour to find out what buildings are new, others prefer to think about the old.
"My favorite building to talk about is probably the Board of Trade building," Scheffle said. "Just because I remember walking by it much younger and always, I remember, really being impressed by it, thinking was such a cool big city building."
For a local on the tour, the memories are nice. But a day out on the water in Chicago is just hard to beat.
"It's great. I don't have to work," said Pappas, who has lived in the city for 55 years. "Every time, it's a little treat to go down the river."

It was 1997, my date and I bought tickets for a different movie but snuck into this theatre showing a movie called the TITANIC. We were watching the car scene when my date tapped me on the shoulder to tell me we had to go to our actual movie. But...I was really enjoying this one! 27 years later and hearing about this exhibition brought me back to that memory, so I was looking forward to going. You walk in, and they give you a "boarding pass" with the name of a person on the ship. Later in the exhibit, you'll find out if you made it out alive, so hold on to your card. After a short intro video, the exhibition begins. Be prepared to read. So much information, well organized, and displayed. I felt transported to the ship as I walked through the "hallway," stood on the "ship's deck," and saw the "grand staircase." Stories from those that survived and those that did not. There are lots of connections to Chicago. In the end, they added a short exhibit on the Eastland Disaster of 1915. Overall, it was a very interesting and enjoyable exhibit. Allow yourself 90 min to two hours to fully appreciate the exhibit.

This attraction is located in a large mall. its main entrance is located off of a courtyard that faces a patio/lounge area chairs and large Legos to play with. Being that this place is located in the mall, there is tons of parking available. I recommend parking either in the orange garage or in the area of the parking lot near the courtyard entrance. You can pre purchase your tickets for a select time slot online or take your chances and purchase them when you get there. If you wait to purchase your tickets, you may not be able to get the time slot that you want though. As soon as you are admitted into the museum, you are given a card with the name of a passenger on the Titanic, including their class. In the middle of the museum, in the lifeboat exhibit, you can see if the person on the card you were given survives. Only one person in my group of 4 survived. My littles were bummed that their person did not make it. The first thing that you do when you enter the museum is to take an overpriced souvenir photo on a mock bow of the Titanic, like Rose and Jack. You can purchase it for $25 at the end of the tour if you would like. After the photo you get in a line and wait to be let into the standing room only movie. I really enjoyed the movie. It was pretty modern and informative. It lasted about 7 minutes or so. After the movie, you start your self-guided part of your tour. The museum has many replicas of artifacts from the Titanic. It should be noted that they do not have many, if any actual artifacts from the ship. However, they do have some items from the ill-fated ship's White Star Line sister ships. Some items would have captions like "the same china and silver were used on all 3 ships." You will also find a replica hallway, a starry night promenade deck replica, a boiler room and first-class cabin. I like the information placards placed around the museum that detailed certain aspects of the ship and highlighting passengers. There is an iceberg exhibit that was supposed to show you how cold it was when the Titanic sank by putting your hand in one of two slots. However, the freezer element was not working on it. Other Museum exhibits include the exploration of the Titanic wreckage, a short movie showing the Titanic sink, from a lifeboat point of view, a timeline of the Titanic sinking, coal power exhibit, the ship in film and television, including James Cameron's 1997 hit movie Titanic, construction of the titanic, and lifeboat exhibit. You can also take a photo on a replica of the Titanic's grand staircase, but you are limited to going no higher than the 3rd step. Additionally, the museum has section dedicated to the local ship tragedy, the sinking of the SS Eastland in 1915, at a pier in the Chicago River. It is located near the end of the tour and is also where you will find the men's restroom. I found this exhibit interesting. I had never heard of this maritime disaster, and was amazed that it was partially caused by improvements made in response to the Titanic tragedy. I also found the link to George Halas and the Chicago Bears very eye opening. Unlike the Titanic exhibits, this exhibit has actual artifacts from that ship and videos of what happened and the link to the Chicago Bears and George "Papa Bear" Halas. You exit the museum through the........yep, you guessed it, gift shop. The shop is grossly overpriced. I compared some of the items in there such as the Heart of the Ocean Necklace, to the same items online and found them much, much cheaper on there. I also felt that they did not have a good selection of items in the shop. They have a few books, shirts, bags, hats and other trinkets, but nothing really good. You can also purchase an add-on VR experience of the Titanic here. This museum is good, but I have seen much better. I spent about a little less than an hour here. Compared to other Titanic museums that I have visited and what this museum could be makes this attraction just "good" for me. I was not wow'ed and we breezed right through it. Of course, attractions like this are money traps, but this one seems even more so. I probably would not visit here again, but I will admit that it is a nice change of pace from the downtown Chicago attractions. I would definitely seek out discounts such as a Groupon, prior to my visit though.

HOP ON BOARD THE GOOD SHIP TITANIC, Y'ALL! Get ready. You have stumbled on a review of Titanic The Exhibition from an amateur Titanic expert (self-proclaimed of course). Of course, I attended the exhibit on the day closest to the 112th anniversary of the sinking and OF COURSE I dressed up. Yes. I showed up to the Old Orchard Mall in Skokie Illinois like I was the first-class-queen-of-the-night. Heart of the ocean and all. No one else was dressed up. People thought I might have been a part of the exhibit. There was a long line when we walked in, but it moved quickly! The first thing you do is receive a boarding pass- the staff was very unenthusiastic about this. You then take a photo with a green screen, which turns into a photoshopped picture of you having a "Jack-and-Rose" moment at the front of the ship. My "boarding group" was then ushered into a small room where we watched a short movie giving us an overview of Titanic's history. This is very basic if you are familiar with Titanic, but great for beginner-enthusiasts! At the end of the film, the attendant announced that we were not allowed to sit on any furniture or touch any of the items on display, as they kept breaking. At first, I thought this was odd, because it is common practice to not touch anything at a museum is it not? I soon understood why they had to say this, because many of the items are out in the open, almost set up like a photo-op! If you are looking to see actual artifacts from the Titanic, this is not the right exhibit for you. Titanic The Exhibition only has replicas OR relics from the White Star Line company. Many of the things we saw were actually used on board one of Titanic's sister ships. Should you like to see real Titanic pieces, I would recommend the permanent exhibits in Pigeon Forge or Branson! I particularly enjoyed the replica rooms you could walk through in this exhibit! They do a good job staging what it would have looked like when you would have boarded the ship. There is also a first class stateroom, but it was blocked off by velvet ropes (these seemed placed last minute, so I wonder if it used to be something people could walk through?). A key moment of the exhibition is walking to the Grand Staircase! Apparently people used to be able to walk up and down it (cue another Jack-and-Rose moment!), but someone had recently fell through when I visited, so there was a permanent attendant to keep watch. She was very good at letting each party have their own moment to take a photo with the staircase! There are also benches in this area if you need a rest (be warned, this exhibit is VERY hot!). You will then be taken into the boiler room and eventually up on "deck" during the fateful evening. This part is a little cheesy with the LED stars, but I liked it. The exhibit will then show you a projection of what the sinking looked like from the POV of a lifeboat. From there, you actually learn about the Chicago Eastland disaster of 1915! It was a neat touch, and I appreciated the amount of artifacts. The end of the exhibit features some movie props, including the famous Rose drawing and the heart of the ocean. There were also two costumes on display- I was surprised that the only thing separating them from patrons was a velvet rope! There is also a decent room about the exploration voyages- yes, they did recognize the most recent submersible accident from 2023. This was neat, and they did have actual things that the crew wore during their missions! Overall I think this is a great experience for people who know nothing about Titanic. Unfortunately this felt more like a money-grab-experience than an exhibition, but I truly enjoyed the replica rooms. Attached to the Titanic Exhibition is actually Downton Abbey Exhibition! I believe they sell 2-in-1 tickets if you are interested. Despite a certain lack, I still enjoyed myself. Thanks for everything, Titanic!

This traveling exhibition is smaller and less elaborate than the one I viewed at the Museum of Science & Industry back in 2000, and not comparable to the permanent Titanic museums located in Branson, Pigeon Forge, and Belfast. Still, the exhibit is well worth seeing because it's informative and immersive. You follow a timeline that commences with the design and construction of the ship and extends through the aftermath of the tragedy. Then you glimpse the discovery and salvage operations, and also view artifacts from the 1997 movie. A "bonus" feature on the Eastland disaster here in Chicago was very well done. By far the most compelling features of the exhibit are the full-size recreations of the ship's interior including First Class and Steerage. The centerpiece is the Grand Staircase. Due to height constraints, this particular version lacked the skylight. Also, the staff won't let anyone ascend higher than the third step and the staircase was bathed in a hideous yellow light. I should mention, too, that the vast majority of the artifacts displayed actually came from the Olympic and the Britannic, Titanic's nearly identical sister ships. The iceberg room is downright chilling (in a figurative, not literal, sense). Here, you view a digitally animated film of the Titanic making her final plunge from the same perspective as those who were shivering in the lifeboats. The exhibit description states, "The visit will take around 1 hour." I respectfully disagree. You will need considerably more time to properly see everything. You can take your time, nobody will rush you.

This was an okay exhibit. I knocked off a couple of stars due to limited new info, long lines and crowds (despite purchasing timed tickets), and it felt stuffy with no air flow. The only highlight of this exhibit was the portion on the Eastland disaster since it brought home the topic of boat safety.
We purchased Flex tickets so we could enter any time. We arrived about 20 minutes before opening time and they let us go on in. I'm so glad that we arrived early in the day because our group practically had a private experience. There were only a few other people who were touring the exhibit the same time we were. Our group of five had plenty of time to take photos and enjoy the experience. By the time we left there was a long queue of people waiting to get in. The experience would not have been nearly as enjoyable if it had been crowded when we went through. My suggestion- purchase Flex tickets and arrive early. Also- there are NO restrooms available in the exhibit area. You have to walk to the public restrooms in the mall. The only thing that we didn't appreciate was that none of the employees were friendly. A few were downright unfriendly, and a few others were totally unhelpful.

What an interesting experience to be had! This was my son's birthday present and we all enjoyed it. Everything was put together very well. It was rather eerie when observing many of the artifacts on display, but was awesome gaining further knowledge regarding the most haunted historical drama in the world. Upon entry you are given a boarding pass with an actual human being who was on the ship. It is further divided whether or not you were a first, second, or third class passenger. Individuals are then taken into a room to view a short film. From that point on you wander from room to room to observe actual artifacts accumulated from the shipwreck. Peoples' stories line the wall, both of the survivors and of the deceased. It is a very haunting experience, but so informative. There are also hallway corridors set up for both the first and third class passengers. Both my husband and son were fortunate to be first class, whereas I was a third class passenger. However, the Titanic had the best accommodations for all at the time. The grand staircase was also on display, the most elegant feature of the Titanic. At the end there was also a short display about the Eastland Disaster, Chicago's very own "Titanic." This was a nice touch to the overall exhibit. Highly recommend this experience while it's still here!

The lines were very long and just not very interesting . The staircase was beautiful and the heart necklace but just didn't seem very interesting. Was great movie the titanic but exhibit was just average.
Great exhibit! Lots of museum-like displays with artifacts from the Titanic and its sister ships. It also offered great replicas/photo opps of the grand staircase, white hallway leading to cabins and a sensory experience that included an iceberg and sound effects from after the collision. Lots to read, too, ranging from descriptions of the artifacts to dining room menus and profiles of several victims and survivors. As a bonus, there was also a space dedicated to Chicago's Eastland disaster. Overall, it was very well done!
The place was hot hot hot. No AC no fans. We were told it was because the weather has been so warm. The exhibit was dark In most spots due to them turning down the lighting because of the heat. ??? Which made no sense. And Thursday was a cooler day outside. Many people left the exhibit due to the heat etc. so disappointing. There were 4 of us who made the trip to Skokie and very very disappointed to say the least. It would be nice to receive free tickets to give it another try. They should have cancelled the exhibit if they had no air conditioner or fans.

Mayor Brandon Johnson marks Juneteenth by joining youth-led West Side walking tour
By Marissa Perlman
Updated on: June 20, 2024 / 11:30 AM CDT / CBS Chicago
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Youth on the West Side are celebrating Juneteenth – the holiday also known as Freedom Day or Black Fourth of July, recognizing the full emancipation of slaves in the United States – by kicking off a summer series of walking tours with My Block, My Hood, My City.
Mayor Brandon Johnson joined Wednesday's walking tour in North Lawndale, led by youth guides from the West Side.
"Today is a reminder of why it's important for us to fully express our liberation, because there are forces who – just like in the 1800s – did not want to realize our full liberation. Those forces did not die out with the Civil War," Johnson said.
Organizers said the tours bring the young guides so much joy to show where they eat and they play.
The first time they did these tours, there were only six tours that summer. The next summer there were 31 tours. Now they're doing multiple public tours every Saturday from mid-June through August, and also offer private tours. The goal is to host 100 tours this summer.
It a summer job for the youth guides. They're paid $15 an hour, and get paid to show off their own community.
Organizers said, with these tours, visitors will see the West Side from the eyes of the young people who live there.
"You always hear the negative about the West Side of Chicago; they're selling drugs, they're shooting, they're in gangs, they're doing this. You get to see the artful intersections, you get to see the community roots, you get to see the hidden gem restaurants," said Jahmal Cole, founder and CEO of My Block, My Hood, My City. "You get to see the joy in the eyes of the youth, and this is Chicago, so youth are just showing off their neighborhood."
The free North Lawndale youth-led walking tours are held every Saturday at 9 a.m. through August. Tickets are available online.
