German Tourist Who Stripped Naked At Bali Temple Sent For Mental Health Treatment
She allegedly got into an argument with the staff members and then forcefully entered the outdoor arena, where she undressed and stood close to the dancers..
Saraswati Hindu temple in Ubud.
A German tourist who was arrested after stripping naked and gatecrashing a sacred performance at a temple in Bali has been sent for mental health treatment by Indonesian officials, as per a report in South China Morning Post . Twenty-eight-year-old Darja Tuschinski was also charged with failing to pay hotel bills while on vacation on the island.
This comes as the country is implementing stricter rules for tourists who are seen misbehaving. The South Asian country has seen an increase in foreign visitors being deported for engaging in actions or making gestures that, according to the authorities, offend the religious sensibilities of Balinese Hindus, as per the outlet.
Police spokesman Stefanus Satake Bayu told SCMP, "The foreigner is depressed because she has no money to finance her stay in Bali."
As per various photos and videos circulating on social media, the woman was seen naked at the Saraswati Hindu temple in Ubud, near the dancers. The 28-year-old attempted to enter the inner sanctuary of the shrine until a security guard barred her from doing so.
As per the outlet, she allegedly got into an argument with the staff members and then forcefully entered the outdoor arena, where she undressed and stood close to the dancers.
The Indonesian police added that Ms Tuschinski also roamed naked around the guest areas of the resort where she was staying. However, they decided not to press charges against her. The temple also organised a ritual to "purify" the sacred space. After declining to board a flight back to Germany, Ms Tuschinski was eventually transported to a mental hospital in Bangli town.

In December, Indonesia's parliament approved legislation that would outlaw sex outside marriage. According to AFP, sex outside of marriage will be punished with one year in prison while unmarried people living together could face six months in jail. However, tourists visiting Indonesia will not be charged under the new law which will criminalise sex outside marriage, officials said.
Those who "visit or live in Bali would not need to worry with regard to the entry into force of the Indonesian Criminal Code," Bali's Governor Wayan Koster said. Bali's government would ensure "there will be no checking on marital status upon check-in at any tourism accommodation, such as hotels, villas, apartments, guest houses, lodges and spas," he added.

German tourist strips naked and gatecrashes sacred performance at religious Bali temple

A German tourist has been arrested after stripping naked and gatecrashing a sacred performance at a temple in Indonesia .
Darja Tuschinski, 28, was denied a ticket to the Hindu show in Bali, before allegedly pushing past security and removing her clothes in a bizarre protest.
The blonde backpacker was then seen striding confidently past the dancers before forcing open a large set of gilded doors. When a local man tried to stop her, she curtsied at him, appearing to mimic the dancers' movements, before walking off the platform to kneel next to a shrine as if in prayer.
Shocked holidaymakers sitting on chairs watched as the tourist continued her naked rampage and walked back on stage.
Furious security staff rushed over and detained Darja for disrupting their show and handed her over to the police in the Ubud district of the popular holiday island.
She now faces up to two years and eight months in prison if she is found to have broken the country's public indecency laws. Bali Police Public Relations Head Stefanus Satake Bayu Setianto said: "The incident of a naked female foreigner occurred on the stage of the Puri Saraswati Hotel in Ubud, Gianyar Regency.
"She lives alone. During her stay at Ubud Bungalow, she was often seen naked while walking around the villa area."
Staff at the Saraswati Ubud Temple apologised to their visitors and performed a ritual to remove the "bad energy" from the area caused by the streaker.
Police took Darja to the station where they performed a drugs and alcohol test but have yet to reveal the results.
They believe that Darja had been struggling for money and became stressed when she was denied a ticket for the once-in-a-lifetime show, in which women in traditional outfits performed a dance honoring their Gods.
Local council chief Wayan Widana said that Darja had been suffering from "depression" because she had run out of money for her extended trip.
Anggiat Napitupulu, Head of the Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights for the Bali Region, said Darja was grilled at the police station before being taken to the hospital for physical and psychological check-ups.
He said: "We are currently investigating this case. We are very sorry that this incident occurred."
Officials in Bali have been trying to crack down on badly behaving foreigners amid a surge in the number of cases of backpackers fighting and stripping.
Public indecency is illegal under Article 281 of the country's Criminal Code, which prohibits "acts that violate public decency or morals".
It can be used to prosecute people for engaging in public displays of affection, such as kissing or hugging, or for those wearing revealing clothing or stripping off in public.
The maximum punishment for violating Article 281 of the Criminal Code of Indonesia is two years and eight months in prison.

Woman exposes genitals on motorbike in Bali
A Danish tourist has allegedly been detained after she committed an indecent act while on the back of a motorbike in Bali.
Major turning point in bridge collapse saga
âA lot of bloodâ: Horror boat crash
Sliding doors moment which saved plane
A Danish tourist has allegedly been detained after exposing her genitalia on a motorbike in Bali.
In viral footage shared to social media, the woman can be seen sitting on a motorbike behind a foreign male laughing as she lifts her right leg to the side, exposing her gentials.
When the man – who is speaking to the camera – witnesses the woman’s indecent act he quickly pushes her leg back to cover her modesty.
The incident reportedly took place in the tourist hotspot of Seminyak, a beach resort area at the southern end of Bali.
Footage of the woman’s act has since gone viral after it was shared to Instagram by Indonesian designer Ni Luh Djelantik on Monday.
Ms Djelantik was outraged, telling her half a million followers that, “Bali does not need trashy tourists.
“Foreigners are increasingly going too far with their actions. All the enforcement of the rules has not made them learn their lesson,” she continued in the caption.
In the post, Ms Djelantik also called for harsher sanctions for misbehaving tourists, while thanking the Ngurah Rai Immigration office for listening to her complaint and looking into the matter.
According to local reports, the Danish woman and her male German friend were detained in a hotel in Kuta, Badung – about 15 minutes from Seminyak.
“[They] are being held in custody at the Nguarh Rai Immigration Office after being apprehended and detained,” head of the Ngurah Raie Immigration Office said in a statement to online Indonesian publication Socialexpat.net .
“We will therefore conduct more investigations.”
It comes as another female tourist was involved in unruly behaviour when she stripped naked and stormed the stage during a sacred Balinese dance performance at a temple in Ubud.
The woman, identified by police as 28-year-old Darja Tuschinski, was arrested over the act.
The backpacker was filmed climbing the temple stairs and attempting to open a door, as a local man attempted to stop her.
After barging the door open, she was then filmed walking down and kneeling in front of the stage, where she appeared to pray.
Local council chief Wayan Widana told another local media outlet, Radar Bali , that Tuschinski was known to suffer mental health issues and had been “brought to the Bangli Mental Institution”.
Indonesian officials have been extremely vocal this year about their frustration with unruly tourists, with Bali’s governor flagging a ban on tourists using motorbikes and hotel workers instructed to educate foreign guests on what they can and can’t do .
There is also an official campaign cracking down on unruly behaviour with large billboards expected to be installed.
The way authorities are dealing with foreigners is changing and Australians have been warned they must be prepared.
This includes knowing the local laws and customs to avoid hefty fines or being kicked out of the country.
Ravindra Singh Shekhawat, who is the general manager for Bali operations at Melbourne-based tour company Intrepid Travel, moved to the island in February last year.
He told news.com.au last month his observations were that only a “very small” percentage of tourists display unruly behaviour but recently it was increasing.
“Recently there has been an increase in tourists not following the local laws and respecting local culture and traditions, including instances of tourists getting into heated arguments with local police for not wearing helmets or breaking traffic laws,” he said.
“Police have responded to this unruly behaviour by increasing their routine checks on the ground, such as driver licence checks and drink and driving checks.”
A “tourist tax” of up to $150 is currently being considered by the Indonesian government to curb bad behaviour and stop Bali being seen as a cheap holiday destination.
Bali Tourism Board chairman Ida Bagus Agung Partha Adnyana previously said the tax would improve the quality of tourists.
“Income from the tourism tax would help fund a range of measures and prevent Bali from becoming known only as a cheap destination,” he said.

Travellers heading to Bali now have a tax to pay.
It seems as though every other week now a new story makes headlines about a tourist in Bali engaging in some wildly disrespectful or outright illegal behaviour.
We've seen videos of tourists entering sacred temples while naked, public drunkenness, and even shouting at law enforcement after being stopped for riding a scooter without a helmet. Who could forget the moment last year when a travel vlogger published a bizarre social media video featuring tourists and expats appearing to congratulate Bali for being the "whitest island in Asia".
As a half-Indonesian woman, these stories make me feel equally nauseated and apoplectic.
Bali is an island heavily dependent on tourism and the local economy suffered profoundly during COVID lockdowns. Now holidaymakers and travellers are returning in shocking numbers - but from now on, they'll be paying a tourist tax.
And fair enough.
Watch: the tourist tax explained. Post continues below.
From February 14, the Indonesian government is imposing a small fee for foreign visitors who are travelling to the province of Bali. People who travel to other Indonesian provinces will not have to pay the tax.
The levy is 150,000IDR per person, which is about $15 Australian dollars.

Visitors can pay online via the LOVE BALI website or mobile app by bank transfer. Visitors will then receive a voucher by email, which they can then scan upon arrival at the relevant checkpoints. Cashless payments can also be made at Bali's International Airport, as well as any other harbourside entry point, though prior payment is recommended.
Local authorities have also starting to make it clear that there will be crackdowns on tourists' behaviour.
They are considering introducing a quota that would see limits placed on tourists entering the island. Bali's Governor, Wayan Koster, said that Bali will "no longer welcome mass tourism" and that the quota would see tourists forced to queue to enter.
"Those who want to come next year can sign up from now. That's the system we want to apply."
The local government has also previously considered banning motorbikes (a measure that was later aborted) and there are increasing visa crackdowns on foreigners working without proper permits on the island.
Meanwhile, as the flood of tourists continues (particularly those from Australia) these news stories about foreigners acting appallingly are bound to continue to appear, too.
All of this should force us to reflect seriously on how we have come to view Bali as a holiday destination and weigh up our personal choices as tourists.
It's a nuanced conversation - but it needs to happen.
The relationship between Bali and tourism has long been one erring on the side of exploitation more than symbiosis. The overall contribution of tourism to Bali's economy is thought to sit somewhere in the region of 60 to 70 per cent and during COVID lockdowns, the island suffered terribly from the loss of foreign visitors.
But over the years, the sheer number of tourists has also led to an overwhelming Westernisation of hotels, restaurants, and clubs, and a distressing depletion of natural resources on the island - according to one 2012 study, 60 per cent of Bali's water is used by tourists.
I'm not suggesting that tourists need to turn away from travelling to Bali - but certainly we need to be more discerning of our own behaviour when we choose to travel there.
The people who make headlines are certainly in the minority, but I am led to question other people's choices, like those who exclusively patronise foreign-owned, Westernised businesses when visiting. Handing your money over to international companies rather than spending directly into the local economy is a problem.
Going to nightclubs and hotel restaurants and ignoring the opportunity to immerse yourself in Balinese culture and lifestyle is a problem.
Drinking green smoothies and eating chia bowls from Australian cafes instead of diving into the local cuisine isn't so much a problem as it's just painfully lame.
I think the perception of Bali in general also needs to be inspected very, very closely. Too many Australians seem to believe that because Bali is one of Australia's closest tourist destinations, because the flights there are relatively inexpensive and it's a fairly safe bet for a relaxing time, Bali is basically there for us . I've heard people refer to the island as North-North Bondi.
But Bali is not our playground. As much as people might feel energised and a little wild on any holiday, the particular emergence of terrible behaviour in Bali and failure to take seriously its governance and culture is also a transparent symbol of racism that we need to face up to.
Indonesians shouldn't be diminished, ignored, belittled or - god help me - perceived exclusively as symbols of spiritualism for Western people who want to go on yoga holidays or Eat-Pray-Love themselves.
And let's face it, there are also reasons that we should take authorities in Bali extremely seriously, including the continued practice of capital punishment in Indonesia that has seen foreigners executed for trafficking drugs onto the island (a Brazilian teenager is currently in custody in Bali for attempting to traffic 3.9 kilograms of cocaine onto the island).
I would also add that Indonesia, as a nation spanning five main islands and about 18,000 other smaller islands, has plenty of other incredible tourist destinations to offer beyond Bali.
But in the end, if you do choose to visit Bali (because it is a stunning and remarkable place) it's worth keeping in mind a healthy amount of respect for the island, the people, and the complexity of what you're entering into.
