14 Road Trips Within Six Hours Of Cincy

Story: 45 Pics That'll Make You SOO Proud Of The Midwest" / Location: Somewhere in the Midwest... / Image: Chas Wiederhold

Over the past year, a fair amount of travel concepts, destinations, photos, and stories have come across our desks. And don't get us wrong, they're all special. (Travel, whether it's in a location on the oppostie side of the globe, or to a neighborhood just up the road, is a vital and inspiring part of the human experience.) But let's be honest, some articles just hit you differently. And some places leave you pining, thinking, and dreaming far longer than others. Here, then, is our gift to you: a collection of the "Travel" pieces that made the past twelve months the most daydream-filled year on record. - - - TOP TRAVEL PIECES of the past year Retreat To This Ohio Castle (& Leave Your Phone At Home) "Think Games of Thrones meets Grimm's Fairy tales. Ravenwood Castle is the perfect (non-scary) marriage of the two." Everything about this middle-of-nowhere bed and breakfast is designed to be a true getaway. No cable TV. No wi-fi. No reliable cell service. Go ahead and dive in, friends. You don't know how bad you needed it till you give it a try. 45 Pics That'll Make You Soo Proud Of The Midwest "I've lived my whole life wondering why everyone who is smart, talented, and creative moves away from a place I love. [...] I want an audience to grasp my fixation on this subject of pride for place. I don't want to be a townie alien anymore. I want to be someone who says, 'I love where I'm from.'" - Chas Weiderhold, who biked 2600 miles across the Midwest. 24 Hours In Amish Country When you live in the city, you might forget how different things can look and feel just a short distance away. Holmes County, home to Ohio's Amish Country, is the definition of that phenomeon. This is a place where time slows down and cars share the road with horse-drawn buggies. It's a world away. And it is wonderful. Discover The Wonder Of Rock Climbing At Red River Gorge Because taking a place that you already know is super-special and discovering something that makes you see it in an altogether new light (and with an even-deeper level of respect) is a pretty magical experience. Plus, I mean those pics! This Gorgeous Beach Is Only Six Hours Away. ... And It's In Canada You can put all those "Eh" / "aboot" / maple syrup & hockey quips away ( for now, at least.) Rondeau Provincial Park, located on a sand spit jutting out from Ontario into Lake Erie, is straight-up beautiful. No jokes about it. A Day in Rabbit Hash When a dog is the mayor of the town, you know this is a place that does things right. Put-In-Bay: The Tiny Ohio Island You Should Know About "Welcome to Put-in-Bay, where golf carts are the preferred transport. Located on South Bass Island in northern Ohio, this destination has a split personality that ensures everyone has an unforgettable time. (Think Gatlinburg-meets-Key West. On steroids.)" Um, what?! Consider us intrigued. Welcome To Clifton, Ohio. It's Gorgeous. This is one of the year's most popular & beloved Travel stories. And it's easy to see why. An old mill resting idyllically atop pristine waterfalls. Clean sunlight sifting calmly through the trees. You can pretty much feel the tranquility radiating from the pics. Take a breath (preferably a deep one) and enjoy. Yellow Springs: A Day Trip Worthy of Your Ohio Bucket List The comedian Dave Chappelle lives there. But beyond a possible celeb-sighting, this hippy dippy town has lots of other aspects that'll keep you entertained. Take the Glen Helen Nature Preserve, for example. It's gorgeous. The Abandoned Kentucky Ski Resort That Still Has Plenty To Offer So apparently, back in the '80s, Kentucky had a ski resort But without snow, that didn't last too long. Still, a trip to General Butler State Resort, which is perched on the hilltops above the picturesque Ohio River valley community of Carrolton, is more than worth your while. Walkabout: The Homes of Hyde Park Hyde Park oozes charm. We know this. But the reason this particular "Walkabout" gets the nod is fairly simple. That Mushroom House on Erie Ave. It's wackadoodle -- and awesome. Madison: Indiana's Own Piece of the South Referred to as "America's Hometown," the river village of Madison, Ind. prides itself on its steamboat heritage and historic preservation. A Walk Back in Time: Ripley, OH Just 50 miles southeast of Cincinnati (and located on the river), Ripley will remind you of a simpler time. And sometimes that's all we need to repair our faith in humanity. On the Road: Asheville, NC The 5+ hour drive is spectacular in its own right, but then you arrive. And it somehow gets even better. Be sure to visit The Biltmore Estate and, of course, take a leisurely stroll through Asheville's quirky downtown. Bonus : 10 Must-Visit Ohio Destinations Because a single destination isn't good enough for "good measure," we've decided to give you 10. - - - Now it's on you. ATTAINABLE ADVENTURES FOR EVERY SEASON OF LIFE

Best Road Trips From Cincinnati for Outdoor Adventure

Looking for a getaway?

I’m sharing some of my favorite destinations for outdoor adventure that are great road trips from Cincinnati.

I’ve personally visited each one of these destinations and many of them I’ve experienced multiple times over the years.

Outdoor Adventures at EarthJoy Tree Adventures

Table of Contents

Adventures in a Treehouse Rental from EarthJoy Tree Adventures

1 Hour Road trip from Cincinnati

Enjoy a remote getaway at one of three unique treehouses at EarthJoy Tree Adventures. I’ve stayed in all three and each treehouse has unique features that I love.

Stay in a Treehouse from EarthJoy Tree Adventures

  • The “Pete Nelson” has a giant barn door that opens to connect the living room to the outside.
  • “Aliyah” has a swinging bridge that connects two sleeping spaces. There is an exposed tree with seating in the living area with board games stored on the seating area shelving.
  • “Old Hickory” has a great sleeping nook inside and a slide from the deck. Below the treehouse, there are hammocks to rest in.

Each treehouse has an area inside where you can cook your meals too or you can grill outside or on the campfire.

There are plenty of hiking trails on the property, a creek, and a fishing pond. You can also schedule a guided tree climb that allows you to experience the thrill of tree climbing without the risk thanks to your harness.

Historic Clifton Mill

Outdoor Adventures in Yellow Springs. Ohio

1+ hr road trip from cincinnati.

Take a Hike at Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve  268 acres with trails that connect to John Bryan State Park. My favorite part of the trails was the waterfalls.

Another beautiful spot to visit is the  Historic Clifton Mill.  It seriously looks like a postcard. I highly recommend trying their giant pancakes at the Historic Clifton Mill restaurant that serves breakfast all day. During the holiday season, add their  legendary Christmas light display to your list.

After a long day on the trails, cool off with ice cream from Young’s Dairy Farm.

For the best value purchase a family fun pass that gives access to an assortment of family-friendly activities on-site and includes 2 scoops of ice cream.

Discover more ideas around Yellow Springs here.

Outdoor Adventures at Hocking Hills in Ohio

2.5 hour road trip from cincinnati.

A popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, Hocking Hills has an assortment of distinctively unique hiking trails. Over two days, you can cross off most of the popular hikes at Hocking Hills if you are strategic.

You can appreciate the area from above during a zip line tour with Hocking Hills Canopy Tours or a kayak trip with Hocking Hills Adventures on the water.

If you don’t want to camp in a tent, I highly recommend staying in a cabin at the local Hocking Hills KOA campground .

Learn more about all of the unique adventures in the Hocking Hills area here.

While you are in the area, check out Athens, Ohio located 45 minutes away. This university town has hiking trails and several fantastic bike and brew destinations on the “Brewed on the Bikeway.”

Conner Prairie Interactive History Park

Outdoor Adventures at Hamilton County, Indiana (North of Indy)

Home to Conner Prairie , an outdoor interactive history museum with hands-on interest making history educational and fun. For an unforgettable aerial view of the park try the tethered 1859 Balloon Voyage, weather permitting.

At Koteewi Archery Range, you can put your archery skills to the test with several ranges and unique targets including dinosaurs.

If you need some restaurant recommendations in Hamilton County , I’ve got you covered.

If you want to stay close to Conner Prairie, Prairie Guest House is a bed and breakfast located across the street. During our previous stay there we also visited Morse Beach and the park.

outdoor dining at Shaker Village

Outdoor Adventures at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill -Kentucky

1.75+ hour road trip from cincinnati.

The 3,000-acre Shaker Village property has historic buildings that include 13 buildings and 72 overnight rooms for guests.

You can explore 35 Miles of Hiking Trails at Shaker Village. My favorite discovery was the Fulling Mill waterfall off on the Shawnee Run trail.

The Preserve  has 1200 acres of native grasses attracting 500 plant species and diverse wildlife including 150 species of local and migrating birds.

There is an educational working farm with animals and an amazing garden that sources many of the items at the restaurant.

The locally sourced food at the Trustees Table restaurant is fantastic! Make sure that you try the lemon pie which is an original Shaker recipe.

Check the calendar to learn more about upcoming special events at Shaker Village.

Red River Gorge in Kentucky

Outdoor Adventures at Red River Gorge in Kentucky

You can take the skylift chair lift to the top and hike around to see perspectives of Natural Bridge from afar, above and below without doing a big hike.  Ticket options are round trip or one-way in case you want to experience a leg of the hike to or from the top.

Some other unique experiences in the area include driving through a mountain at Nada Tunnel,   hiking to a waterfall, Via Ferrata guided rock climbing, and taking a cave tour via boat, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard with The Gorge Underground .

If you are looking for a great place to stay, I recommend Cliffview Resort, home to the Red River Gorge zipline.

You don’t need a passport for this adventure. The Wilds gives visitors a taste of an African safari with the affordability of Midwest prices.

During the open-air safari tour, you will see several rare and endangered species, along with rhinos, ostriches, and giraffes roaming around in a natural setting.

Animal lovers will love feeding the animals from their vehicle on the drive-thru  African Safari Park in Port Clinton . Marblehead Lighthouse is another great stop for another perspective of Lake Erie.

For a sweet treat enjoy an ice cream from  Toft’s,  Ohio’s oldest dairy.

Did you know that there are islands in Northern Ohio?

You can take a ferry to explore Put-in-Bay or Kelleys Island . Rent a golf cart or bike around the islands and stop to explore the nature preserves.

Experience sandy beaches, sand dunes, and views of Lake Michigan as far as you can see with less drive time than the ocean.

There is a nature center at the Indiana Dunes National Park and if you are feeling extra ambitious take the 3 Dune Challeng e for bragging rights.

Pro tip: don’t try the 3 Dune Challenge during the heat of the day…the sand can get hot and the dunes have steep inclines. I speak from the experience of doing it the harder way.

On a clear day, you can see the silhouette of Chicago in the distance during an incredible sunset.  While you are in the area, you can check out a few other stops in Valaparsio nearby.

aerial tramway at Ober Gatlinburg in Tennessee

4.5-4.45 hour road trip from cincinnati.

There is so much to do in the Smoky Mountain region when it comes to outdoor adventure . Hiking, white water rafting, ziplining, alpine slides, mountain coasters, tubing, zorbing, waterfalls, and more.

I have visited this area many times and we always pack a LOT into a weekend visit each time.

A few of my favorite stops with multiple things to do in one location are Foxfire Mountain Adventures , Anakeesta , and Ober Gatlinburg.

Where to stay comes down to preference and what you want to be close to.

Gatlinburg Falls Resort is a great option if you want a cabin that feels like you are away but is still a close drive to downtown.

Greystone Lodge on the River is one of my favorites if you want to be within walking distance of everything downtown.

In Pigeon Forge, we’ve previously stayed at Maples Ridge Vacation Rentals and the “Eagles on High” cabin at Eagle’s Ridge Resort.

This location is a bit further than the others, but for history buffs, it’s worth the adventure. In rural central Kentucky, you can visit the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park . See where he was born and where he lived on the Knob Creek Farm until he was seven years old.

The cabin is inside a memorial building that has 16 windows and other features that have a count of 16 to represent him being the 16th president.

From that memorial building, you can head to Knob Creek and see a couple of historical buildings on the site where he lived. The Gollaher Cabin was built in 1800 and moved to the site of Lincoln’s home so you can see what it would have looked like. Both sites have staff on site that can share information. There is also a visitor center with a theater, museum, and bookstore.

13. Explore the Colorful Underground at the Ohio Caverns

The Ohio Caverns are the largest and most beautiful caverns in the state. Visitors can take a tour that explores two sections of the cavern. First, you’ll see the site where the cavern was discovered and learn about how they explored this area from 1897 to 1925. Once you’ve got an idea of how it was for the original explorers, you’ll be able to take the one-mile tour through the parts that have been discovered since 1925 including the large stalactite named The Crystal King.

The Caverns are open year-round except for Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. In the winter months, the tours are a bit shorter, so you might not get the full experience, but it’s worth the trip either way.

14. Sip Your Way Along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail

Distance: 130 miles

Travel Time: 2 hrs 8 min

Kentucky is home to some of the best distilleries in the world. There are over 40 distilleries along the Kentucky Bourbon Trail to explore. The trail runs through northern Kentucky. You can plan your own adventure using the Kentucky Bourbon Trail website . Each distillery will have a Kentucky Bourbon Trail Passport. There is a page for each distillery, plus a spot to take notes and get a stamp showing that you’ve been there. If you get a certain number of stamps, you’ll receive a free souvenir tasting glass.

For a day trip, you’ll probably only be able to visit one or two, but you can always come back for more. Some of the spots offer mixology classes and others will teach you about their history and offers samples at the end of the tour.

This is the perfect day trip for adults who want to sample some cocktails and enjoy the beautiful scenery of northern Kentucky. If you aren’t a fan of bourbon at all, it might not be the best option for you.

Getaway Guide

Comparing destinations: which one is right for you.

Finding the perfect weekend getaway from Cincinnati can feel like a treasure hunt.

But fret not, each journey is a unique adventure tailored to your preferences and budget.

First off, Sheraton Suites Akron Cuyahoga Falls left me captivated with its breathtaking views of the Cuyahoga River.

It’s an excellent choice for those craving a blend of nature and luxury without breaking the bank.

Next, The Grand Resort.

It’s a gem for the wellness-oriented, with its spa facilities, golf course, and gourmet dining.

An intimate and cozy bed-and-breakfast that stole my heart.

The personalized hospitality and charming ambiance cater to those seeking a romantic escape.

Each of these places offers distinct experiences, so take your time, compare, and pick the one that fits your needs.

How I Picked The Destinations

To ensure I provided accurate and valuable information to my readers, I adopted a meticulous approach.

I made it a point to engage with locals whenever possible.

Their insights and recommendations often uncovered hidden gems that might not have been as well-known.

Additionally, I conducted extensive online research, from browsing travel forums to studying local attractions and amenities.

Our Property Rating Method

I rate these properties based on the following criteria:

  • Room Variety: I use this to rate the room options offered by every property. What room types are available? Can it accommodate different budgets, group sizes, and preferences? I ask myself these questions when evaluating the property’s room variety.
  • Comfort and Cleanliness: This measures the overall cleanliness and comfort of the accommodations. Does it have comfortable beds? Are the rooms spotless and dust-free? These are important factors I consider when rating comfort and cleanliness.
  • Location: This is used to evaluate how convenient and accessible the property is. How close is it to the attractions? Are there good public transportation options near the location? Is it easily accessible for families? These questions are important when I rate the location of every accommodation.
  • Affordability: I use this to evaluate the property’s affordability. Are the room rates reasonable? Does the property have any additional fees? Does the property offer discounts or packages? I ask myself this in order to rate affordability.
  • Family-Friendliness: This evaluates the family-friendliness of each property. Does it offer babysitting services and children’s activities? Does it have connecting rooms for families? I use these questions to rate the family-friendliness of the property.

From saving on gas to driving with kids, here's your ultimate road trip planner

fun road trips from cincinnati

"Easy Travel” is a 10-part series focusing on how to reduce bumps during vacations, anticipate roadblocks and be ready when things aren’t going your way. If you'd like to contribute to our future reporting and share your experience as a source, you can click here to fill out this quick form .

Ina Daly has spent most of her life on the road.

“My dad was a truck driver and that led me to becoming a truck driver,” she said. “What we do in a day, on a daily job would be like a long road trip to most people.”

With nearly 40 years of driving for freight transportation services provider XPO and numerous industry accolades under her belt, including grand champion at this year’s Arizona Truck Driving Championship , Daly is a pro. She’s also a mom and a grandmother who’s happy to share her experiences to make everyone’s road trips better.

“Some of the things I'm telling you are what we truckers tell our family members,” she said. “I've had a lot of accomplishments in my career and going to the National Truck Driving Championships (this month) is a reward, but the bigger reward is being able to share some things … that have the potential to save lives.”

What to do before a long drive

“Make sure that your vehicle’s road trip ready,” Daly said. ”Really pay close attention to your tires, your coolant, your fan belt.”

She notes tire dealers often offer free inspections to ensure tires are properly inflated and undamaged.

AAA spokesperson Aixa Diaz advises getting the whole car serviced before hitting the road.

“If you're a car person and you can, do that yourself at home, by all means,” she said. Otherwise, she recommends getting the oil changed and battery and tires checked professionally.

To save time and avoid stress, Diaz also suggests filling up on gas the night before leaving and making hotel reservations well in advance, noting that many hotels allow cancellations without penalty up until the day beforehand.

What do you need before a road trip?

It’s always good to keep an emergency kit with supplies like first aid, a flashlight and extra batteries, and basic tools in the vehicle.

“You want to make sure that if you do have a tire issue, you have the proper tools and jacks in your vehicle to be able to change it,” Daly said. She said warning signals like reflective triangles can also warn other drivers to steer clear in the event of a breakdown.

For road trips, both she and Diaz recommend shelf-stable snacks like protein bars that won’t melt and plenty of water. “Don't think that a bottle or two for everybody is enough,” Daly said. “You've got to have, you know, five or six bottles for everyone.”

Diaz also recommends wet wipes, blankets during the winter, and any time-sensitive medication or pet food that might be needed in the event of an extended delay.

“These things ideally wouldn't take up too much room in your trunk but they're just good to have in case of an emergency,” Diaz said. “Just think, ‘If I were stuck for a long time, what would keep me comfortable until I was able to (get) help?’”

A printed map and a general sense of the route can also help in case there GPS hiccups or a phone dies.  AAA’s free TripTik planner can help travelers plot their trips in advance and find rest stops, lodging, food and gas along the way. And its free Gas Cost Calculator can help locate the cheapest average gas prices for drivers when it’s time to refuel.

What I should know before a road trip?

“Everything can be a distraction in the car – the radio, the kids, etc. But the phone is a big one,” Daly advised. “When you’re driving, that thing should not ever be in your hand.”

More than 3,500 people were killed on U.S. roads in 2021 because of distracted driving, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration .

Daly also recommends watching out for distracted drivers.

“You can tell a distracted driver by their fluctuating speed,” she warned. “They're drifting in their lane. Their head is looking down instead of focusing on the road. You want to give those people a wide berth.”

How long will a road trip take?

Road trips always take longer than expected because of traffic, construction and other things that arise en route.

Diaz says to expect at least an hour longer than whatever the GPS predicts. Daly recommends leaving at least two hours early.

“You don't want that stressful drive,” Daly said. “You’re hurrying. That lends to bad driving behaviors like tailgating and speeding, which leads to accidents. Don’t put yourself in that situation.”

How many hours a day should you drive on a road trip?

“It just varies so much from person to person, how long they’re comfortable driving,” Diaz said. “We want to err on the side of safety. We want people to be safe on the roads and drive the speed limit and not rush it, but everybody's different.”

Switching out drivers can lighten the load, but no matter who is driving, Daly said, “If you're starting to feel a little, less attentive, maybe a little fatigued, it’s time to take a break.”

What time is best to drive?

“We always recommend, especially during the holidays, leave early in the morning,” Diaz said. “The later you leave in the day, the worse it's going to be because a lot of times during the week … you're going to mix with those commuters on the road.”

“Some people enjoy night driving,” she added. “Once you get to like 8 p.m., 9 p.m. traffic comes down a lot.”

However, she noted drivers who leave in the evening should watch out for fatigue and plan to drive less than if they started fresh in the morning.

How do you take a good road trip with kids?

When possible, Daly recommends having a designated passenger to help with kids so the driver can focus on the road.

Another important thing is to keep seatbelts on the whole way.

“Kids have a tendency to take those off,” Daly said. “Make sure they stay buckled up. I've seen some horrible things out there.”

'I just want to see more of us': The importance of seeing people like you while traveling

What do kids need on a road trip?

Entertainment helps pass the time, but it doesn’t have to be digital. There are all sorts of screen-free road trip games .

Diaz recommends printing a map or list of sites or cities for kids to watch for along the way.

“You know, yell it out or mark it on your sheet,” she said. “Have some crayons in the car with them so they're following along on the trip, and they feel like they're part of it.”

“Point out historical landmarks and scenery; enjoy nature,” Daly echoed. “That's one of the things that we truck drivers love about our jobs is we get to see the country and nature.”

Stop at points of interest every few hours or simply for everyone to stretch their legs.

And for those times when kids are on screens, make sure to pack car chargers.

What is the best way to save gas?

Don’t speed.

“Fuel economy peaks at around 50 miles per hour on most cars, and then it drops off as the speeds increase,” Diaz said. “You think, ‘OK, if I just go 70, I'm going to get there faster, and it'll be better,’ but essentially, you're just wasting gas at that point." Fuel economy can be increased by as much as 15% by reducing highway speeds by 5 to 10 miles per hour, she said.

Don’t idle unnecessarily either, like at rest stops.

“Your car engine consumes about a quarter to a half a gallon of fuel per hour while it's idling,” she said. “But a warm engine only takes about 10 seconds’ worth of fuel to restart, so if it's safe to do so, just shut off your engine.”

Story continues below.

What happens if my tire blows out?

“When you blow a tire, kaboom, it freaks you out. Do not panic,” Daly said. “Don't slow down abruptly or brake hard or jerk the wheel because that will cause you to lose control and have an accident.”

“Just focus on steering,” she added. “Slow very gradually, off to the side of the road in a safe area, and you won’t have any issue from your blown tire.”

How do you drive around semitrucks?

“Be aware of our needs and limitations,” Daly said. “You know we’re big. We need a lot of space around us. We have big blind spots. … If you can’t see the truck driver’s face in the mirrors of the truck, the truck driver can’t see you.”

She advised against passing on the right.

“If you have to pass quickly, don’t linger over there. We see people driving over there for the shade (and it) puts us in a very dangerous situation,” she said. “And don’t cut in front of us and then hit your breaks. People don’t like to follow a truck because they can’t see around us, so they pass us and then cut in front of us.”

“It takes away that safety cushion we leave in front of us,” she added. “When you see all that space in front of a truck, that's not for your convenience so that you can pass us and cut into it. That’s for our safety and yours.”

By the same token, she advised fellow drivers to leave plenty of space in front of their own vehicles, so they have enough room to stop quickly in an emergency. If another driver cuts into that space, she suggested, “Take a break. Slow down again. Recreate that space. Bite your tongue and think pure thoughts.”

That last tip may not be so easy.
