freeride world tour fwq

The Freeride World Qualifier will benefit from a revolutionary format update in 2022 with the addition of the Freeride World Qualifier Finals, with top riders from around the world battling for a spot on the Freeride World Tour. Encompassing the last three FWQ four-star events (4*) in each of Freeride’s two global regions, the FWQ Finals promises electric, high-stakes showdowns between Freeride’s hungriest up-and-comers and experienced FWT riders, at some of the most legendary FWQ events around the globe. END OF FEBRUARY: THE CUT COMES TO FWQ

Complementing the FWT 2022 format and calendar updates [LINK], the 2022 FWQ series will be similarly split into two rounds of competition. At the end of February following the preliminary round of FWQ events, top-ranked FWQ riders will gain qualification into their region’s FWQ Finals: after the FWQ 4* at Silvretta Montafon (19-22 February) for Region 1, and after the FWQ 4* Taos (1-5 March) for Region 2. The top-ranked FWQ riders will be joined by FWT riders just eliminated from the Freeride World Tour following The Cut at Kicking Horse, Golden, BC (12-17 February). All qualified riders’ rankings begin anew at the first FWQ Finals event, and the battle for the coveted few qualification slots on the Freeride World Tour begins! THE FWQ FINALS CALENDAR Region 1 (Europe, Asia, Oceania) FWQ Finals Calendar

  • FWQ 4* NENDAZ, SWITZERLAND | 4 - 9 MARCH
  • FWQ 4* JASNA, SLOVAKIA | 11 - 14 MARCH
  • FWQ 4* OBERGURGL, AUSTRIA | 01 - 5 APRIL

Region 2 (Americas, Oceania) FWQ Finals Calendar

  • FWQ 4* CRYSTAL MOUNTAIN, WASHINGTON, USA | 14-16 MARCH
  • FWQ 4* BIG SKY, MONTANA, USA | 23-24 MARCH
  • FWQ 4* KIRKWOOD, CALIFORNIA, USA | 31 MARCH – 1 APRIL

THE NUMBER OF QUALIFIED RIDERS

  • To the FWQ Finals : 60 to 75 athletes per region
  • Worldwide, approximately 120 athletes will qualify for the FWQ Finals; about 20 riders who missed qualification for the FWT finals, plus the top 40 to 60 FWQ riders from each region at the end of the preliminary round of FWQ events. To the FWT 2023 : 18 riders make the cut

After the dust settles at the end of the three-event finals, riders’ best two out of three results will count towards the final ranking, and the top 4 ski men, 2 ski women, 2 snowboard men, and 1 snowboard woman from each region—18 riders in total—will be qualified to the following season’s Freeride World Tour.

SPORT DEVELOPMENT The changes to the FWQ system are designed to promote the continued, sustainable growth and development of Freeride as a whole. The updates will enable riders from both FWT and FWQ to battle it directly for a spot on next year’s FWT. “We believe these changes will benefit riders at every level of competitive Freeride. For FWQ riders, the changes mean they can compete more strategically through the first round of the season before they get to prove themselves against FWT riders in FWQ Finals. For established Freeride World Tour pros, this gives them a chance to regain their spot on FWT the very next year, instead of trying to compete in both tours simultaneously or spending the following season trying to requalify.” - Benjamin Calmel, FWT Head of Sports Development “By developing this high-level finals series, we create a new opportunity for global visibility and media exposure for our top FWQ riders. The smaller final events enable us to place riders on higher-caliber venues not typically available to large fields. This higher level series delivers on our vision to develop a wider array of events for our athlete community, while providing the highest level of competition appropriate to a rider’s skills and abilities.” - Scott Mahoney - IFSA President

Qualifying competitions for the Freeride World Tour

One of the highlights of the Freeride World Tour competition season is most probably the Verbier Qualifier Week.

A full week of freeride competitions where amateur riders enter as many events as they like to hopefully enter the FWQ ranking and seeding list.

The competitions will take place across the whole Verbier St-Bernard region, in resorts such as Verbier, Bruson, La Tzoumaz and Vichères. There will be a big freeride ski and snowboard test with over 10 brands participating and there will be parties every night to ensure a great atmosphere over the whole week.

how to start competing?

In order to compete, you need to become a member, create your member profile, and purchase your annual license. Every rider, including wildcards, must acquire a license to compete.

If a rider competes without a license, they cannot claim the points earned at the competition, even if they obtain membership after the competition.

When signing up, please use your real name without nicknames, as it is necessary for insurance purposes (although having a nickname is mandatory to build yourself a legend). With this membership, we offer the following services:

  • Automated registration platform for all events
  • Rider's results in the seeding and ranking list
  • A rider profile on the FWT website (which is damn sexy)
  • Rider assistance
  • A unique number per athlete to avoid spelling mistakes on start lists and rankings

If you wish to compete only once, you can obtain a one-event license. If you plan to compete in two or more events, you can get a tour license that is valid for the entire season.

For 1* events, registration is on a first-come, first-confirmed basis, and riders with no points are eligible.

For 2* to 4* events, a seeding list is used to confirm riders. Since competition spots are limited, the seeding list determines which athletes among all the registered athletes are invited to a competition.

The seeding list is based on a rider's best three results over the past 52 weeks. Riders who have not competed before or who have a low ranking on the seeding list may not be able to participate in 3* and 4* events. They will need to start collecting points in lower-level events (1* and 2*) to move up on the seeding list.

Frequently asked questions ABOUT MEMBERSHIP

Yes, in order to compete you need to become a member, create your member profile and buy your annual license. • Rider’s results in the seeding and ranking list
  • A rider profile on the FWT website
  • A unique number per athlete, avoiding spelling mistakes on starting lists and rankings

You can get a one event membership if you want to compete only once or a tour membership valid for the whole season if you wish to compete at 2 or more events.

On the FWT Junior the one event license costs 30 EUR and the tour license is 80 EUR.

On the FWT Qualifier the one event license costs 30 EUR and the tour license is 80 EUR.

If a rider who purchased a one event license wishes to compete in more events, he/she will have to upgrade to a full tour license but will only have to pay the difference.

If you turn 18 during the season and decide to move on to FWT Qualifier from U-18 FWT Junior you will have to upgrade to a FWT Qualifier Tour license but in this case the FWT Junior Tour license will be refunded.

If you want to become a member, please sign up here:

If you are already a member you just need to Login with your logon ID and your password to renew your license:

You can retrieve your password with your Logon ID and the email address you signed up with by clicking here:

If you do not remember your Logon ID and/or email address please contact your regional office to request a password reset which will be sent to your registered email address.

The memberships expire at the end of the season based on the current season and to compete in an event that belongs to the next season, the membership license of the next season will have to be purchased.

Your nationality determines which region you belong to not your residency.

There are only 2 regions: Region 1 which is Europe-O ceania also including Africa and Asia and region 2 which covers the A mericas.

The minimum age to participate is 10 and anyone can sign up once they turn 10 during the season. Any rider turning 18 on or after June 1 of the current season will remain a junior for the duration of the season. Freeride Approved as Official Discipline

The FIS has recognized Freeride Skiing and Snowboarding as an official discipline during their general assembly held this week in Reykjavik.

The International Ski & Snowboard Federation (FIS) has recognized Freeride Skiing and Snowboarding as an official discipline during their general assembly held this week in Reykjavik. FIS and National Ski Associations members voted unanimously in favour of the move.

The 'officialization' of Freeride Skiing and Snowboarding is the second step towards the development of the sport on a global scale, extending support to athletes and enhancing the potential for future inclusion in the Winter Olympic Games.

"This is an important day for the freeride community," said Nicolas Hale-Woods, Founder and CEO of the Freeride World Tour, who added, "The recognition of Freeride Skiing and Snowboarding as an official discipline within FIS will elevate the sport and provide new opportunities for athletes worldwide. We are excited about the future prospects this brings to the freeride movement and beyond."

Following this recognition, Freeride Skiing and Snowboarding will undergo a voting process within individual National Ski Associations worldwide. This step emphasizes grassroots development, ensuring the sport gains widespread support and that young athletes have the resources needed to excel.

The Freeride World Championships will now be included within the FIS framework, paving the way for a structured and unified approach to competitions and athlete development.

"This is just the beginning," added Hale-Woods. "Our goal is to nurture the sport at all levels, from grassroots to elite competitions, and to see Freeride Skiing and Snowboarding represented in future Winter Olympic Games."

“The recognition by the FIS is expected to have a profound impact on the freeride community, providing a platform for athletes to showcase their skills on an international stage and encouraging the next generation of freeriders to pursue their passion with greater support and resources,” a FIS statement concludes.

Congress elects new Council members, approves Freeride as a FIS discipline

The 55 th International Ski Congress convened this Wednesday in Reykjavik, Iceland, where a busy agenda included landmark decisions such as the integration of Freeride as a FIS discipline, the election of 18 Council members, and the inclusion of two new FIS associate members: Guinea-Bissau and Qatar.

With the Freeride World Tour and FIS having already joined forces since the 2023 season, the ground was set for the Congress to vote on the inclusion of Freeride Skiing and Snowboarding as a full-fledged FIS discipline.

Council renewed

The Congress in Reykjavik was capped by the biennial election of 18 Council members, of whom eight were re-elected members and 10 are new joiners.

The elected ones, in alphabetical order of the country they represent:

Michael Huber (AUT) – new member

Tzeko Minev (BUL) – re-elected

Deidra Dionne (CAN) – re-elected

Anna Harboe Falkenberg (DEN) – new member

Martti Uusitalo (FIN) – re-elected

Fabien Saguez (FRA) – new member

Franz Steinle (GER) – re-elected

Flavio Roda (ITA) – re-elected

Aki Murasato (JPN) - re-elected

Freddy Keirouz (LBN) – new member

Alexander Ospelt (LIE) – new member

Fiona Stevens (NZL) – re-elected

Tove Moe Dyrhaug (NOR) – new member

Enzo Smrekar (SLO) – re-elected

José María “May” Peus España (ESP) – new member

Karin Mattsson (SWE) – new member

Jean-Philippe Rochat (SUI) – new member

Dexter Paine (USA) – new member

Following a last-minute proposal submitted by the FIS Council, which gathered the day before, the Congress approved the inclusion of two representatives of Para Snow Sports, and not only one, as athletes’ representatives in the Council – the same number allocated to able-bodied athletes.

Adam Hall, from New Zealand, was confirmed as one of these two athletes, while the second representative, who will be a woman, is still to be appointed.

The Congress also validated a resolution by the FIS Council to have two athlete representatives – one of whom representing Para Snow Sports – on the Executive Committee.

The first meeting of the FIS Council with its new composition is scheduled for 4 July and will be held online.

New FIS Council

New members welcome to the family

On a day when it incorporated a new discipline and elected a new Council, the 74 nations present at the Congress also voted on the admission of two new FIS associated members: Guinea-Bissau and Qatar.

Next year’s Congress is planned to be held online on 13 June 2025, while the 2026 edition will travel to Belgrade, Serbia, and is scheduled to take place between 10 and 11 June.

Red Bull Rampage has evolved to become freeride mountain biking’s most coveted title.

It's the premier big-mountain freeride event and 2023 was its 22nd year. Red Bull Rampage brought the world’s top riders to the toughest terrain on the planet to showcase the biggest and baddest tricks, lines and sends the sport has seen yet.

  • Snowboard, ski freeride events officially added to FIS competitions

BEIJING, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Snowboard and ski events in freeriding were recognized as an official discipline by the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) at the 55th International Ski Congress convened Wednesday in Reykjavik, Iceland.

Starting from the 2023-2024 season, FIS began collaborating with the Freeride World Tour (FWT) organizers. During the vote on June 5, this branch of skiing and snowboarding, characterized by off-piste and big mountain powder runs, was officially selected as part of the FIS competitive events.

"With the FWT and FIS having already joined forces since the 2023 season, the ground was set for the Congress to vote on the inclusion of Freeride Skiing and Snowboarding as a full-fledged FIS discipline," FIS stated in a brief announcement.

"The important step brings us closer to the goal of becoming an Olympic Sport," following the approval, the FWT organizers expressed in an open letter.

Unlike highly standardized events relying on groomed pistes and artificial snow, freeride competitions take place on natural snow and mountainous terrain. Athletes are judged on their movements, stability, and speed, making the event highly entertaining and popular among young skiing enthusiasts.

However, the rules and regulations for freeride competitions are still in the early stages, and the off-piste environment poses greater safety challenges. The FIS and FWT organizers did not provide detailed explanations on these issues at the congress.

Founded in 1924, FIS is as old as the first Winter Olympics. Initially, FIS events only included traditional snow sports like alpine skiing and cross-country skiing. Since the 1990s, the federation has embraced more youth-oriented events and has helped bring disciplines such as snowboarding, freeski park, and pipe events to the Olympic stage.

The Freeride World Tour qualifiers were held at the Hemu Ski Resort in Altay, China, during the 2023-2024 season. FWT officials highly praised the area's abundant natural snowfall and terrain.

Additionally, at this FIS Congress, China's Zhangjiakou, Hebei, was elected as the host city for the 2029 FIS Snowboard and Freeski World Championships. Enditem

Red Bull Rampage Finally Rolls Out the Red Carpet for Women Riders

In its 23rd edition, the legendary event will welcome women riders for the first time ever, turning the spectacle into a thrilling two-day event in St. George, Utah.

red bull rampage 2015

Last year, when asked why women have been excluded from the event, Red Bull said, “Red Bull Rampage is the most difficult freeride mountain bike competition in the world. For this reason, a selection panel invites the best 18 riders globally to compete…we are exploring with industry experts how we might develop a women’s category at Red Bull Rampage.”

In a brief press release on Tuesday, Red Bull announced that “For the first time in the event’s history, Red Bull Rampage will see the world’s top men’s and women’s freeride athletes descend upon the rugged terrain of Virgin in Southwest Utah, as part of an expanded two-day event this October.” They also said further details will be shared later this summer.

Katie Holden was one of the primary forces behind getting women into the Rampage. In 2019, she co-founded Red Bull Formation , the first women’s freeride progression session that brought top women freeriders to the Utah mountains to build lines and send it. Though this has been a non-competition event, it helped integrate women into the event, and give them experience riding on the same terrain as the Rampage.

Formation returned in 2021 and 2022 but was postponed and eventually canceled in 2023. Proving Grounds is another freeride event that has allowed women to participate. There, Casey Brown became the first woman to compete in a major men’s freeride event.

Holden posted on social media , “Holy sh*t, we f*cking did it. I can’t believe it. I will write something more thoughtful when I can gather myself. I can’t tell you all how much this means to me.”
