Entrance to the Citadel of Jaca (Huesca, Aragon)

Jaca is known as “the pearl of the Pyrenees”. It is a cosmopolitan European city, and a key stop on the St James Way (Camino de Santiago).

In Jaca it is essential to visit the Citadel , an example of military architecture from the 16th century and declared a Historical-Artistic Monument. Construction on the citadel began in 1592. As a result, the monument features a pentagonal ground plan of grandiose dimensions, including a moat, and is built on flat ground. There are other very important buildings, such as its Romanesque Cathedral (11th century), declared a National Monument, the Benedictine Monastery, the Church of Santiago, the Hermitage of Sarsa, the San Miguel Bridge, the Clock Tower (15th century) and City Hall.

One of its most important festivals is held on the first Friday in May, commemorating a medieval battle . There are tournaments, jousting, a beautiful flag-bearing procession, and trials of ancient Aragonese sports such as the bar throw. On June 25, Jaca celebrates the big day of its patron saint festivities. This features a procession in which the urn holding the remains of the patron saint - Saint Orosia - is paraded while dancers perform ancient castanet dances around it, accompanied by sacred and ancient instruments: the chiflo and the stringed psaltery.

What to see and do in Jaca, the capital of the Aragonese Pyrenees

Information

It’s impossible to understand the historical heritage of the Aragonese Pyrenees without stopping in Jaca. This small city in Huesca province (internal link), capital of La Jacetania county, is a fascinating place, perfect for a trip that combines historical heritage and nature. Read on to discover the best of Jaca, the essential places to visit and the main points of interest in its surrounding area.

Set on the way out of the valley of the Aragon River , the Canal de Berdún depression, Jaca is the capital of the Aragonese Pyrenees and a tourist centre that attracts visitors thanks to its historic heritage, the Way of St James [Camino de Santiago] and winter sports.

It comes as no great surprise to learn that Jaca has existed for centuries. Firstly, it’s along the Aragonese branch of the French Way of St James, a stopping point along this thousand-year-old route after crossing the Pyrenees.  It’s also been a strategic location for travelling towards France via the Aragón Valley and Somport mountain pass. And it was a centre of military and religious power that has endured over the years.

Jaca is definitely worth visiting to see the attractions that are detailed below, and it has a wonderful historic centre where you can go for a lovely stroll and stop off to enjoy typical Aragonese food.

Jaca Citadel

The Citadel, or castle of St Peter , is Jaca’s main monument. This pentagonal five-pointed-star-shaped fortress was built on the orders of Philip II in 1592 and all its features are in an excellent state of conservation.  It was designed by Italian military engineer Tiburzio Spanocchi and was part of a defensive network in the Pyrenees; other structures include Pamplona Citadel and the fort of Santa Elena in Biescas.

Canfranc Estación, a Royal Hideaway Hotel

Its exterior walls, moat, towers, bastions and gates are remarkably intact and extremely beautiful. Inside, the large central courtyard gives visitors an idea of the importance of this fortification in its day. It’s one of the finest examples of military architecture in Spain .

Entrada a la Ciudadela de Jaca

Entrance to the Citadel of Jaca

The old barracks contain several interesting exhibitions. The most famous is the Museum of Military Miniatures , a wonderful collection of 32,000 lead soldiers that have been used to recreate famous battles from history. There are also rooms dedicated to the Mountain Battalion of the Republic Army, whose headquarters were in Jaca.

Jaca Citadel was also used as a concentration camp for Republic prisoners during the Civil War.

You can enjoy visiting the citadel independently or by joining a fascinating guided tour. And look out for the famous herd of deer that lives in the moat!

Jaca Cathedral

The cathedral of San Pedro in Jaca is another important monument in the capital of La Jacetania. Construction began on this temple almost a thousand years ago and today it’s one of the oldest Romanesque churches in Spain , and one of the finest examples of this architectural style. It’s an essential stop along the Aragonese branch of the Way of St James.

During the 11th century, Jaca was awarded city status and made a diocese by king Sancho Ramírez in 1077, meaning a cathedral was needed in the town.

The cathedral has conserved its Romanesque style and has three naves, five galleries, apses and two entrance gates. Like all surviving Romanesque temples, the building is an open history book and it features a series of later styles, with Gothic and Baroque elements that were added as the cathedral evolved over time.

The cathedral’s interior has interestingly decorated capitals and corbels.

Diocesan Museum of Jaca

The area around the cloister in Jaca Cathedral houses the Diocesan Museum, another treasure of the city. It contains one of the best collections of Romanesque mural paintings in the world and other fine pieces of medieval art.

The most important exhibit in the Diocesan Museum is the Bagües paintings from the end of the 11th century, which were originally located in the church of Santo Julián y Santo Basilisa in Bagües, Zaragoza. This room is nicknamed the “ Sistine Chapel of the Spanish Romanesque ”, also alluding to its portrayal of the Old and New Testaments.

Jaca’s surrounding area

Jaca is the gateway to the Aragón Valley ski resorts (internal link): Astún and Candanchú. And winter sports aren’t the only big draw here because Jaca’s surrounding area is packed with other attractions.

Monastery of San Juan de la Peña

Near to Jaca, in the small town of Botaya, you’ll discover another historic treasure from the old Kingdom of Aragón: the monastery of San Juan de la Peña (internal link). The monastery is today split between the Old and New monasteries, and it symbolises Aragón’s history because it contains the Royal Pantheon of kingdoms of Aragón and Navarre . The complex was made a National Monument in 1889.

Building work started on the Royal, or Old, Monastery at the end of the 11th century, right on the Way of St James. Its location atop a huge rock is particularly eye-catching. San Juan de la Peña was also where Roman liturgical rites set by the Holy See were first brought to the Iberian Peninsula.

A devastating fire in 1675 meant a new building, the New Monastery, was required and construction started the following year on the nearby plain of San Indalecio.

Canfranc station

Famous Canfranc station is one of the most beautiful in Spain and a place steeped in mystery. The building is as vast as it is lovely and has stood, forgotten, among the mountains by the border with France for decades.

Canfranc station (internal link) is an essential stop for anyone visiting Jaca. Come and admire its architecture and discover the events that took place here during construction. And it’s not just any station because it has a particularly unusual feature: double tracks with both Iberian and international widths to make it easier to serve trains from both sides of the border.

Tren de paso por la Estación de Canfranc

Train passing through the Canfranc Station

Las Güixas Cave

When travelling from Jaca to Canfranc, in Villanúa, visitors can stop off at Las Güixas cave, a natural cavity that reveals the force of nature over the years. Water has progressively created a magical interior space filled with stalactites, stalagmites, flows and other formations that can be admired along the easy-to-follow route.

In fact, the cave is still being formed by water today, and it is shaping the limestone rock drop by drop. It was once inhabited by humans, around 3,000 years ago, and several archaeological finds have been discovered here.

Visits to Las Güixas cave start at the interpretation centre and take about 1 1/4 hours. There is a maximum capacity of 30 people per visit and you need to book in advance. Las Güixas cave is an excellent activity to do in Jaca with children (internal link: Huesca with children).

Where to eat in Jaca

Jaca’s historic centre is a great place for tracking down bars and restaurants where you can enjoy Aragonese food such as ternasco, cured meats, cheese and olla jacetana, a local speciality.

Below is a brief selection of long-standing favourites:

  • La Tasca de Ana : a popular tavern with a wooden bar that is something of an institution in Jaca. Typical bar pinchos, full portions and tapas with a great atmosphere. Its “rodolfitos” are a classic.
  • 19 tapas y 500 vinos : this small restaurant with a modern vibe is another safe bet in Jaca. It has a wide selection of full portions including everything from vegetable dishes to specialities from the sea.
  • Las 3 Ranas : an excellent restaurant in the centre of Jaca that has a big menu of the day. Dishes have a stylish presentation with modern touches. It also has alternative menus, such as the Aragonese menu.

This is just a small selection of three restaurants in Jaca but the city centre’s food scene is in robust health and there are plenty more wonderful options that will suit every taste.

Jack the Ripper Locations and Sites Map

A - Victim #1 - Mary Ann Nicholls

Exit Whitechapel Station and turn LEFT. The road dead-ends on Durward Street where you should take a RIGHT.

Walk to the old school building - the large brick building - ahead, if possible. If construction prevents you from getting there, simply stand as close as you can.

Mary Ann Nichols

Our story begins on the 31st of August 1888. The ‘Autumn of Terror’ is about to begin when the first victim of the canonical five is murdered right here: Mary Ann Nicholls.

Mary left the Frying Pan Pub around half past midnight. She was found at 3:40 am.

The Police Constable sees that her throat has been violently slit - from left to right, twice over, with the incision going all the way through to her vertebrae.

Detective Chief Inspector Frederick Aberline is called to work on the case and he is determined to bring Mary’s killer to justice.

( Learn more about the suspects )

But Frederick finds there is nobody with a bad word to say against Mary Nichols. With no idea of a perpetrator or motive, an entire week passes with no progress on finding her killer.

Seven nights after the murder of Mary Ann Nicholls, Jack the Ripper would strike again.

B - Victim #2 - Annie Chapman

Backtrack along Durward Street until you get to Vallance Road and turn RIGHT. Take the first LEFT onto Old Montague Street and an immediate RIGHT onto Hanbury Street. Continue on Hanbury Street.

As you walk you will pass Deal Street and Spital Street, and you will cross Brick Lane until you reach a car park on the RIGHT-hand side - opposite 28 or 32 Hanbury Street.

The house where Jack the Ripper’s second victim, Annie Chapman, was murdered, no longer stands. But it would have looked similar to the houses you see across the street, such as Numbers 28 and 32.

Hanbury Street in London where A. Chapman was found.

A small space off the street, that offered a little privacy made the back gardens of Hanbury Street a popular location for prostitutes to take their clients.

At 5:40 am, a man living above 29 Hanbury St came downstairs and into the back courtyard where he discovered the body of Annie Chapman.

She was slumped against the fence with her throat slashed and her body cut open from her groin to her chest, nearly cut into two.

C - Frying Pan Public House - Where Mary Nicholls Last Seen Alive

Continue down Hanbury Street and turn LEFT onto Wilkes St.

Take the second LEFT onto Fournier Street, lined with original 18th-century homes, giving you an idea of how the buildings in this neighbourhood appeared in the 1880s.

Take a RIGHT onto Brick Lane and walk down. Stop when you get to the decorative archway that spans the road. When under the arch, turn around to face where you just walked from and take a look at the Shaad Restaurant.

The Shaad Restaurant is the site of the former Frying Pan Pub. The two crossed frying pans carved into the stone are the original decoration of this 19th-century pub.

This is the pub where Mary Nicholls drank away her money on the 30th of August, 1888.

free tour jaca

She is reported to have stumbled out of the pub around half past midnight and was seen by her friend just around the corner a few minutes later.

Somewhere between where you stand now and where our tour began, Mary would run into Jack the Ripper and her life would come to an end.

D - Early Suspects - Kosminski and John Pizer -  Mulberry Street / Zion Square

Continue down Brick Lane. When you get to Whitechapel Road, cross the street and enter Altab Ali Park. Walk diagonally to your LEFT, through the park, and exit the park onto Alder Street. Go RIGHT and immediately turn LEFT onto Mulberry Street. Stop in the middle of the buildings on the right.

Aaron Kosminski

None of the original buildings from the Victorian era still stand here, but in the 1880s there was a square of houses here, which housed mostly Jewish immigrants.

This densely populated area was home to two suspects in the Jack the Ripper murder investigations: Aaron Kosminski and John Pizer.

John Pizer had a prior conviction for a stabbing offense and was suspected of a string of assaults on local prostitutes.

He was arrested after the Ripper’s first two murders but was cleared as there was no concrete evidence against him, and he had strong alibis for the nights the murders were committed.

Kosminski was known to be mentally unstable, having previously threatened multiple women with knives.

In memoirs published in 1910, Assistant Commissioner Sir Robert Anderson also names Kosminski as his prime suspect.

His reasoning is that he believed Jack the Ripper was a local Jewish man of low class and Kosminski was known to be mentally unstable, having previously threatened multiple women with knives.

Anderson also claimed that the identity of the Ripper was known by one person who wasn’t willing to testify as they were also Jewish and didn’t wish to turn over a fellow Jew to the police.

E - Victim #3 - Elizabeth Stride -  Henriques Street

Continue down Mulberry Street and take a RIGHT onto Plumber’s Row. And the end of the road, turn RIGHT onto Coke Street and take the first LEFT onto Weyhill Road.

When that road ends, turn LEFT onto Commerical Road and take the first RIGHT onto Henriques Street, formerly known as Berner Street. Walk along until you come to the Bernhard Baron Building on your LEFT.

You are standing now where Jack the Ripper’s third victim would meet her untimely end.

Elizabeth Stride

Elizabeth Stride was the Ripper’s only non-English victim.

She had moved to London at the age of 22 and married a local man. It appears that she took up prostitution again, part-time, after the collapse of her marriage.

In the early hours of the 30th of September, a man's horse shied away from the movement in the dark streets. After the man returned to the scene with his lantern, he found the body of Elizabeth Stride.

It is believed that the Ripper was interrupted, and the man's retreat to the pub to pick up his lantern gave the culprit enough time to flee the area.

But Jack the Ripper was not yet done for the night.

F - St. Botolph-Without-Aldgate

Retrace your steps to Commercial Street and take a LEFT. Follow the road until it dead-ends then take a LEFT onto busy Whitechapel Street.

Pass Aldgate Station, then Aldgate East Station, until you get to the church of St. Botolph-Without-Aldgate Church. This is your next stop.

Prostitution was illegal. However, since the police understood prostitution was the women's only means of survival, there were two rules for area prostitutes:

  • Prostitutes could not loiter or stay in a single place for a long time - they had to always keep moving.
  • The women were not allowed to approach customers, the customers had to approach them.

free tour jaca

Providing the women followed these rules, the police would turn a blind eye. For this reason, up to 200 prostitutes a night continuously walked in circles around this church, waiting for clients.

Jack the Ripper’s fourth victim was last seen alive circling this building.

G - Victim #4 - Catherine Eddowes

On your RIGHT are some interesting pictures and information about the history of the Whitechapel area, which may help give you a visual reference to how this area looked during the time these murders took place.

After viewing those, turn LEFT and walk between the buildings until the space opens into Mitre Square.

The proximity of this location to St. Botolph’s Church leads us to believe that after being interrupted during his slaying of Elizabeth Stride, Jack the Ripper headed straight to the prostitutes' church to pick up his next victim, Catherine Eddowes.

An eye-witness report puts Catherine at the entrance of this alleyway at 1:35 am, in conversation with a man. The PC on duty the night of Catherine’s murder passed by at 1:45 am, finding her mutilated body at the bottom of this passage in the darkest corner of Mitre Square.

The state of her body and a missing organ after less than 15 minutes suggested a rage and fury that had not yet been seen in the Ripper case.

Walk to the end of Mitre Square and pause when you get to the gates on your LEFT. Just through the gates is a tree - this is the approximate location of where Catherine Eddowe’s body was found.

H - Evidence- Graffiti and Apron Found

Now, turn RIGHT onto Mitre Street. Take the first RIGHT onto Creechurch Lane which you should then follow along until it turns into Stoney Lane as you walk across Houndsditch Road.

Walk ahead until you come to White Kennett Street where you will make a RIGHT. Take the first LEFT onto Gravel Lane and walk until the lane stops at Middlesex Street.

Take a LEFT then an immediate RIGHT onto New Goulston Street. Walk until the Street Ends at Goulston Street.

Across the street stands the Wentworth Model Dwellings. Take a look at the doorway between numbers 40/41.

An hour after Catherine Eddowe’s body was found in Mitre Square, PC Alfred Long stumbled across a bloody piece of cloth taken from Catherine’s apron, stuck to the doorway.

And written in red chalk: ‘ The Juwes [original spelling] are the Men that will not be blamed for nothing. ’ This is one of the only clues discovered during the period Jack the Ripper was active.

The bloody pattern of the knife blade on the apron appeared to belong to a type of knife used in surgical amputations. So at the very least, this suggested to the police that Jack the Ripper had access to surgical weapons.

I - The Workhouse

With New Goulston Street at your back, turn LEFT onto Goulston Street. Keep walking and Goulston Street turns into Bell Lane.

Keep following until you see Frying Pan Alley on your LEFT. Just past this, still on Bell Street is the old workhouse.

You’ll notice two entrances here, separate doorways for men and women. On a typical day, you would have around 200 women and children queuing up for a place in the house, and a similar number of men on their side.

The Workhouse

The dormitories themselves only slept 200 in coffin-shaped boxes. If a person arrived when all the beds had been allocated, they would be given a rope attached to the wall and would have to sleep upright against the rope.

These workhouses were horrendous places to be. And the price for all of this? A 16-hour shift of manual labour.

Today this building serves a student accommodation for the London School of Economics - and are hopefully a bit more comfortable today than they were just over a century ago.

J - Victim #5 - Mary Jane Kelly

With the Workhouse to your back, look across the street to the modern building directly opposite you.

This building sits on the site of what used to be Dorset Street, and the location of Jack the Ripper’s final slaying.

In the 19th century, Dorset Street was considered to be the most dangerous Street in London - and some said even the entire country.

A person walking down that street in the 1880s would be unlikely to make it all the way down retaining all their possessions.

This is the murder site of the Ripper’s final victim: Mary Kelly, who lived at 13 Millers Court here on Dorset Street.

Mary Jane Kelly

A 24-year-old Irish girl, Kelly was to be the last known Jack the Ripper’s victims.

Her murder was so brutal and the desecration of her corpse so barbaric that the only way she could be identified was by the clothing she had been wearing the night before.

Why? Hers was the first of the Ripper’s murders to take place indoors.

Without having to constantly look over his shoulder to avoid detection, the murderer had all the time in the world.

And this horrific scene provided the imagery of the first-ever crime scene photograph.

14 - End of The Line

From here, we will walk to the location where Jack the Ripper would have emerged from Dorset Street all those years ago.

Still with the workhouse behind you, take the street that is slightly to the right and ahead of you, White’s Row.

Walk until you get to the corner of Toynbee Street and then turn LEFT. Walk until you get to the corner of Brushfield Street.

Jack the Ripper would have walked out of Mary Jane Kelly’s room, headed down Dorset Street, and onto the road we are standing on here.

And what would he have seen? Nearly exactly what you are seeing right now: St. Christ’s Church Spitalfields, Spitalfields Market, and the Ten Bells Pub.

The Ten Bells | Jack the Ripper Tour

All five of his victims were known drinkers at the Ten Bells.

It is the belief of investigators both at the time and now that whoever Jack the Ripper was, it’s incredibly likely he was a regular at the Ten Bells.

Now cross the street to Christ’s Church and stand nearby, surveying the buildings here and the unchanged streets surrounding you as we pause to consider who the Jack the Ripper may have been.

There have been over 300 suspects in the Jack the Ripper murder investigations. For brevity’s sake, we will take you down a few of the top suspects.

  • Aaron Kominsky, a known misogynist previously mentioned
  • Montague Druitt, a school teacher and banker who fit the physical description of Jack the Ripper
  • Walter Sickertt, a well-known impressionist artist with an interest in Jack the Ripper
  • Prince Albert Victor, Queen Victoria’s eldest son who has a rumored child with a Whitechapel prostitute
  • Dr. Frances Tumbledy, an American quack-doctor from upstate New York and known misogynist

There are dozens more, and even suggestions of a JANE the Ripper, rather than a Jack.

But each theory has its supporters and detractors and the reality of the situation is that it’s highly unlikely the killer’s identity will ever be positively known.

16 - Aftermath and Conclusion

It is worth mentioning that the Ripper killings had long-lasting and far-reaching positive ramifications for the people of the East End.

This now-legendary story was the first tabloid murder sensation!

With all this attention on Whitechapel, people all over the world were wondering why, in the richest and largest city on earth, were their own people living in these conditions.

Massive social reform came about as a result of the murders with new charities and actions by The Good Samaritans and the Church of England to end child homelessness and help the poor.

Even American millionaires got involved.

15 BEST Jaco Tours & Excursions in Jaco

This blog may contain affiliate links. Read our disclosure policy for more info.

Jaco is one of the best areas of Costa Rica to visit , especially if you’re an outdoorsy person. There is so much to see and do around this city including some of the best beaches and nature reserves in the country . Whether you want to sail out to tiny islands or get lost in the mountains on dry land, this area of Costa Rica has it for you!

While we love exploring different travel destinations on our own, there are some places where taking a tour is definitely worth it. That’s especially true in a place with so many adrenaline-pumping activities as Costa Rica. Ziplining over a waterfall and ATVing through the jungle are must-do’s when you’re in Jaco and quite frankly, you’ll need a tour to experience them.

Some of the other best attractions near Jaco are also only possible on a tour. For example, visiting Tortuga Island requires a boat, as does a cruise in the croc-invested Tarcoles River .

But not all tours are created equal, and while some are well worth your time and money, some are just not – which is why we’ve written this blog! It outlines the absolute best tours and excursions from Jaco!

Our Top Picks

The beach on Tortuga Island

  • Zipline, ATV, and Waterfall Tour – This is our top pick for an adventurous combo tour ! It’s a 5-hour tour that costs $140 USD and includes ziplining, ATVing, and swimming in natural pools at the bottom of waterfalls.
  • Crocodile River Safari – The river cruise is super unique because you’ll get to see crocodiles in their natural habitat! It’s the only of its kind in Costa Rica, so it’s definitely worth adding to your to-do list! The tour is also pretty affordable at only $35 USD per person!
  • Tortuga Island – Tortuga Island is one of our favorite places to visit on a day trip in Costa Rica, and there is this one tour that departs from Jaco . You’ll get to snorkel, relax, and enjoy lunch on this tiny tropical island! It’s a full-day tour that costs $115 USD per person.

The BEST Tours in Jaco, Costa Rica

1. 3-hour atv jungle waterfall adventure.

Daniel on an ATV tour in Jaco, Costa Rica

This ATV jungle waterfall tour is a great way to get a thrill by speeding on an ATV through rivers, weaving through trees, and hunting for waterfalls. The friendly guides will lead you through the thick jungle trails as you climb the mountain to a stunning viewpoint where there are some pretty impressive views of the ocean and Manuel Antonio National Park .

Our favorite part about this tour was the next bit, where we stopped at two waterfalls (Cascada del Zorro and Pura Vida waterfall). Here we jumped off our ATVs and into the refreshing water – it was the perfect way to cool off! If you’re up it, you can even try the 15 ft (4.5 m) cliff jump. We skipped it this time and chose to just relax in the cool water instead.

This tour is suitable for first-time riders and the friendly English-speaking guide will teach you how to drive before you go. With that said, all drivers must be at least 16 years of age with a valid driver’s license.

The 3-hour tour costs $95 USD for adult drivers and $35 USD for passengers 4-15 years old, if you ask us it’s great value consider how much fun the tour was! Roundtrip transportation is offered for those staying in Jaco . You’ll want to bring your GoPro, and bathing suit, and wear closed-toed shoes for this adventure.

Since this is one of the most popular ATV tours in Jaco, you should book online in advance here to secure your spot .

We love that the tour combines two of the most popular adventure activities in Jaco – ATVing and ziplining – plus it includes visiting waterfalls , what more could you ask for really?!

This tour starts by heading up a mountain to gain elevation so you can fly down it. You will soar down a 10 cable zipline circuit amongst the jungle treetops. Once you get to the bottom, you’ll climb on some ATVs and explore the jungle floor riding through the mud, weaving along the mountain trails, and jumping in the refreshing waterfall.

In total, this tour lasts about 5 hours and costs $140.40 USD per person. This tour does not include transport and will instead start at Vista Los Sueños Adventure Park , about a 10-minute drive from Jaco. This is not a tour for young families as there are age restrictions requiring zipliners to be at least 4 years old, and 8 years old to ride the ATV and all passengers must be under 260 lbs (118 kg).

Manuel Antonio National Park is one of the most beautiful protected areas in the country and is known to be a haven for jungle life. If spending the day marveling at all the biodiversity this beautiful country has to offer sounds good to you, this is a must-do tour !

A truly wild experience, this area is home to sloths , monkeys, coatis, many different bird species , and other wildlife like frogs, crocodiles, snakes, and iguanas. The jungle runs right into the beach here, so you can even swim in the calm bays! There’s a reason why visiting this national park is considered one of the very best things to do in Costa Rica .

Now, we feel the need to highlight why a tour to Manuel Antonio National Park is a good idea. First of all, the park is located over an hour’s drive from Jaco and a tour includes transport. Getting to the park without your own wheels and without a tour would be very difficult.

On top of that, having a guide in the park is super handy for navigating the trails and spotting all the best wildlife . Your guide is a pro when it comes to finding hard-to-spot animals (if you’ve ever tried to see a sloth in the wild you’ll know that it is very difficult and often comes with a sore neck from staring up at the trees for so long!) Your guide will also tell you all about the plant and wildlife around you – it’s super interesting!

The full-day tour costs $134.47 USD per person with kids 6-12 years costing $80 USD each. This is an all-inclusive style trip with all park fees, lunch served with an ocean view, and transportation from Jaco included in the price. It’s really one of the best excursions in Jaco and one you should consider if visiting Manuel Antonio National Park isn’t already part of your travel plans.

Tortuga Island is a remote island that doesn’t allow any local residents, except the wildlife, making it feel like an untouched paradise! In true Costa Rican style, this horseback riding tour will take you through different terrain including passing rice plantations, along jungle trails, through rivers, and onto the beach. Why walk when you can ride – am I right?!

One of the things we like about this tour is how helpful the guides are. They’ll make sure you are comfortable no matter what your comfort and skill level is with horses, and they’ll tailor the tour to your level. Also, the horses are healthy and well cared for!

You can choose between multiple departure times with this horseback riding experience but I highly recommend either booking the early 7 am slot or the latest time when the beach is quieter and you can catch either the sunrise or sunset. The horseback tour lasts about 2 hours and costs $69.90 USD per person and includes hotel pick-up within Jaco.

Where to Stay in Jaco, Costa Rica

A hotel in Jaco, Costa Rica

As you can imagine, Jaco is a tourist city filled with beautiful hotels, holiday apartments, and even backpacker hostels. In fact, the hardest part about finding a great place to stay in Jaco is choosing from all the options – trust me, I’ve been there before!

Room2Board Hostel – $

For budget travelers and backpackers, I love  Room2Board Hostel . The hostel is on the pricier side of budget hostels, but it has a beautiful pool, surf camp, yoga, and modern facilities. The atmosphere is also great for meeting other travelers.

Rates for beds in a dorm begin at $18 USD/night, and rates for private rooms with private bathrooms begin at $70 USD/night. You can book Room2Board  here on HostelWorld or here on Booking.com .

Apartotel Flamboyant – $$

If your backpacking days are over and you can spend a little more,  Apartotel Flamboyant  is a top choice in the medium budget range. Getting Around Jaco, Costa Rica

Riding a scooter in Jaco

Jaco is a pretty big city, so getting around on foot isn’t always the most ideal. If you already have a rental car , then great, you’re all set! If not, you’ll need to know how to get around this city to explore all of the fun activities and attractions.

If you’re up for it, rent a scooter, motorbike, or ATV. A scooter is a good budget-friendly option as you can get them for as little as $45 USD per day – cheaper than taking multiple taxis. ATVs are obviously more fun, they cost around $180 USD per day. A motorbike will cost you about $75 per day, but keep in mind, you must have a motorbike license to rent it. Both a scooter and ATV only require a normal driver’s license.

We rented from  AXR  when we were in Jaco and they were a good company, professional with good quality scooters and ATVs.

If you don’t want to rent any vehicle, you can easily take taxis and Ubers around Jaco. For shorter trips in town and nearby, they are a good option. However, they can get pretty pricey for longer trips like out to Crocodile Bridge. For these types of day trips, it’s best to book an organized tour.

There is also a public bus that operates to select areas in and around Jaco, however, the schedule isn’t widely known and can change frequently.

Getting Around Costa Rica

Bailey with our rental car near Rio Celeste Costa Rica

How you choose to get around Costa Rica is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning your holiday here! How you do it depends on your budget, travel style, and comfort level.

Renting a Car

Without a doubt, the number one way to explore Costa Rica is in a rental car. We book rental cars on the Discover Cars website as we have had good experiences with them in the past.

One of the things you need to watch for when renting a car in Costa Rica is the mandatory insurance that the government requires you to have. There are a lot of very cheap rentals that don’t include this mandatory insurance (TPL) in the original booking price, but there are also ones that do. To avoid additional surprise charges when you pick up your rental car, be sure to rent a car that includes the mandatory insurance when you book.

Thankfully, on Discover Cars it’s easy to tell apart the companies that include the mandatory insurance and those that don’t. The trick is you can’t pick any car on their website. In the picture below, you can see this rental car, with pick up in Jaco, includes the TPL. That means the mandatory insurance is included in the price. Any cover you get above that is extra.

Of course, I still suggest getting the full coverage offered by Discover Cars, which covers you even more.

You can  browse cars on Discover Cars here .

TPL Cover Costa Rica

Book Shuttles

If renting a car isn’t in your budget, you don’t feel comfortable driving in Costa Rica , or you just don’t like driving, shuttles are the next best option. There are hundreds of shuttle routes available all over the country, and they are very affordable.

Shuttles in Costa Rica are specifically for tourists and often include pick up and drop off at your selected hotels and airports. The drivers also speak some English, and the vehicles have air conditioning. You’ll also be guaranteed a seat when you book a shuttle (which isn’t the case with the public bus system.)

To get the best price, use the website  Bookaway . They compare all the offers and prices of shuttle companies in Costa Rica so you get the best price! Honestly, we have saved so much money using Bookaway!

You can search for shuttles online on Bookaway here.

Lastly, you can use the public bus system. On short journeys, such as from San Jose to La Fortuna or Uvita to Manuel Antonio, this system is great. However, the longer the journey the more hassle and time spent on a bus. It’s undoubtedly best to save the public bus in Costa Rica for short and straightforward trips!

The public buses are definitely the cheapest way to get around Costa Rica, but they are not always very reliable and schedules often change without notice and delays are to be expected. The buses can also be very crowded and hot – so just be prepared!

It’s also good to speak some Spanish if you plan on riding the public bus since most drivers and ticket booth operators don’t speak English.

AP PGA Championship story:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The attention starts building weeks, if not months, ahead of the one major keeping Rory McIlroy from the career Grand Slam, the most elite club in golf. It’s like that every year, and it doesn’t make it any easier when he gets to the Masters.

Jordan Spieth should be able to appreciate the feeling. Except that he really doesn’t.

Now that McIlroy missed again at the Masters — his 10th straight attempt at getting the final leg — Spieth is next up with an opportunity to become only the sixth player in history to capture all four professional majors.

It feels like an afterthought going into the PGA Championship.

Scottie Scheffler tries to extend his dominance with a second straight major. Brooks Koepka is the defending champion and coming off a LIV Golf win in Singapore. Jon Rahm turned in a dud at the Masters and curious eyes will want to see at Valhalla if that was an aberration.

Oh yes, and Spieth goes for the career Grand Slam, a feat achieved only by Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Ben Hogan and Gene Sarazen.

“These things, like winning a career Grand Slam, they happen kind of when I think there’s less focus and less of a spotlight on him,” said Jim Nantz of CBS, who has covered every PGA Championship since 1991. “And I think Jordan goes into this week without a whole lot of discussion about that possibility coming up at Valhalla.

“So maybe it is favorable in that sense mentally.”

Spieth isn’t surprised the attention is not that high, certainly not at the level McIlroy has faced the last decade each time he heads to Augusta National.

One reason is his game, which has not been great. Spieth has gone just over two years since he last won a tournament and has had only a few close calls since then. He comes into the PGA Championship having missed the cut in four of his last five tournaments that had a 36-hole cut.

“He’s got more accolades,” Spieth said about the Slam hype between him and McIlroy. “He’s been a better player over his career. Maybe that creates a little noise. He’s been a bit more vocal about it himself, so maybe that makes a little bit more difference.”

The other reason is the Masters, the only major held on the same course every year.

Sarazen is the only player with the career Grand Slam who completed it at Augusta National. But that was in 1935, long before the Masters was considered a major and 25 years before Arnold Palmer first brought a professional slam into the golf conversation.

McIlroy threw away a chance in 2011 when he lost a four-shot lead in the final round at the Masters. He played in the final group with Patrick Reed in 2018 and didn’t get it done. Reminders are everywhere when he returns.

That isn’t the case for Spieth. He goes to Quail Hollow one year, Bellerive the next. He has had seven cracks at getting the missing piece of the Grand Slam on seven courses.

“For me, it’s like the PGA Championship feels decently similar to a number of tournaments we play,” Spieth said. “I don’t mean that in a bad way. It’s played on some of the biggest, best golf courses. But the identity is not the same as the other three. In my mind, you don’t need to find a different way to win, versus guys who don’t have some of the other ones.

“We play a few tournaments a year that could be PGA Championships if you change the branding and the grandstands.”

Only two other players lacked only the PGA Championship for the career slam — Arnold Palmer and Tom Watson.

Jack Nicklaus referenced them last month when speaking of McIlroy’s chances at Augusta.

“Is Tom Watson good enough to win the Grand Slam? Absolutely. Was Arnold Palmer good enough to win the Grand Slam? Absolutely,” Nicklaus said.

He felt the same way about McIlroy before adding, “But they have got to do it.”

Spieth is 30 and would seem to have time on his side — but not history. Sarazen, Hogan and Woods won the final leg in their first attempt. Woods did it in the most spectacular fashion, winning the U.S. Open by 15 shots and a month later the British Open by eight. He was 24.

Player (1965 U.S. Open) and Nicklaus (1966 British Open) completed the Grand Slam on their third attempt after they had captured the third leg.

McIlroy already has had 10 cracks at the Masters since he picked up the third leg. Spieth has had seven tries at the PGA Championship since winning the third leg at Royal Birkdale in 2017.

He said it doesn’t weigh on him, at least not lately.

“I remember thinking about it in ‘17 because it was right after the Open and I was playing so well,” Spieth said. He tied for 28th at Quail Hollow.

He also said he gave the Grand Slam some thought in 2019 at Bethpage Black when he was in the final group going into the weekend with Brooks Koepka. That wasn’t really a fair fight. Koepka set the 36-hole record for majors (128), a record seven shots ahead of Spieth.

“But I don’t feel like it will build up over time, not like people talk about Rory’s building up over time,” Spieth said.

More focus is on a nagging injury to his left wrist that first surfaced right before the PGA Championship last year at Oak Hill. Spieth is trying to manage it. He also is spending more time than he imagined on the phone as part of the PGA Tour Enterprises board trying to figure out the best way forward with the Saudis.

Justin Thomas has two PGA titles — what Spieth wouldn’t do for one — and is surprised why his longtime friend doesn’t get much attention as he pursues the final leg.

“It should be the same amount of attention — you could say more because he’s younger than Rory,” Thomas said. “But that also could be a good thing. Going in under the radar is never bad.”
