SPAIN - JULY 14: The band Metallica during a performance at the Estadio Civitas Metropolitano, on 14 ... [+] July, 2024 in Madrid, Spain. Metallica is a thrash metal band, founded in Los Angeles in 1981. To date, the band has released eleven studio albums, the latest being '72 Seasons', released in 2023. It has won numerous awards, including nine Grammys. In addition, since 2009, Metallica has been a member of the Rock Hall of Fame. (Photo By Europa Press via Getty Images)

Metallica has revealed they’re extending their 72 Seasons tour in 2025 with several dates announced across North American markets. The band will be returning with support acts Pantera and Ice Nine Kills who accompanied them throughout the last two years of their world tour. However, Metallica will also be welcoming two new support acts Limp Bizkit and Suicidal Tendencies, who are on select dates of their 2025 tour.

Starting in Las Vega, Nevada on April 12th and then closing off the tour in Denver, Colorado on June 29th, Metallica will be performing 21 shows next year, three of which will be headlining festival performances at Sick New World fest in Las Vegas and Sonic Temple, the Danny Wimmer Presents festival held in Ohio’s Historic Crew Stadium.

During this run Metallica will also be making their first ever appearance in Blacksburg, Virginia, home of the Virginia Tech Hokies — the College football team that has garnered mass attention for their use of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman,” which has been used for the last 20 years as the Hokies take the field.

Metallica is just finishing the second year of the 72 Seasons world tour with the final 2025 shows slated for Mexico City this month. Unlike the first announcement of the 72 Seasons tour, Metallica has not announced any separate European dates to coincide with this North American leg next year, which seems strange considering countries like Ireland haven’t had the band since 2019. However, it could be possible that the band has other dates scheduled for Fall 2025 that they’re waiting to announce later in the year.

It’s quite a coincidence that today saw tour announcements from two of the biggest acts in the heavy metal genre, Iron Maiden with their 50th anniversary world tour announcement and now Metallica with another 72 Seasons tour. As it stands right now 2025 is looking to be a spectacular year for metal fans, and there’s only more tours announcements to come.

Says Bruce Dickinson, “ Next year is a very special one for IRON MAIDEN and we’re going to be giving our fans a once-in-a-lifetime live experience. This is a tour that’s gonna put a smile on your face and a cheer in your throat. If you’ve seen us before, then get ready to take that experience to a whole new level. If you’ve never seen us before, then what the hell have you been waiting for? Now’s your chance to find out what you’ve been missing! IRON MAIDEN’s definitely gonna get ya!”

Manager Rod Smallwood adds, “50 years of Maiden and I have seen 46 of them! With well over 100 million albums sold and almost 2500 shows in 64 countries and counting, to countless millions of fans, we are all still loving every second and consider every tour a new challenge to bring something different and exciting to our fans. And for this very special one we’re pulling out all the stops!

We will cover classics and fan favourites from the first nine albums, from IRON MAIDEN to FEAR OF THE DARK, many of which we haven’t played in years and many we will likely never play again in the future. We have already been hard at work for months putting together an even more spectacular and elaborate new show which will bring the songs to life more than we have ever been able to do before. This is going to be a huge couple of years for IRON MAIDEN, and Eddie of course, and we are very excited about what we have up our sleeves for you fans throughout the whole of our 50th year. I promise you are all going to be very happy indeed!”

On Saturday June 28th the band will perform at the London Stadium, home of West Ham Football Club – the team that band founder Steve Harris has supported throughout his life, and with whom IRON MAIDEN have a long and storied history.

This concert in front of over 60,000 fans, will be the first time that IRON MAIDEN have performed on the club’s hallowed turf. A true homecoming show – with Steve Harris, Dave Murray, Adrian Smith & Nicko McBrain all born in the surrounding area – it will also be the biggest UK venue the band have ever headlined outside of their festival appearances.

Steve Harris says, “My love of football and my support of West Ham is no secret, and I know many of our fans around the world have shared that with me too. So we’re all very excited to be playing at the London Stadium as part of the RUN FOR YOUR LIVES tour. We can’t wait to see you all there!”

Iconic metal band Metallica will perform in Syracuse for the first time in nearly 30 years as part of their 2025 M72 World Tour. The concert will take place on April 19, 2025, at the JMA Wireless Dome on the Syracuse University campus. It marks Metallica’s first show in the venue, previously known as the Carrier Dome, and their first visit to Syracuse since 1996, when they headlined at the New York State Fairgrounds during Lollapalooza.

Joining Metallica for the Syracuse concert will be special guests Pantera and Suicidal Tendencies. The show will feature a central stage with 360-degree seating around the Dome and a standing "snake pit" area in the middle. Tickets go on sale on Friday, September 27, at 10 a.m. through Ticketmaster. Prices have not yet been announced, but fans can also explore resale platforms like VividSeats, StubHub, and SeatGeek.

Metallica, formed in California, has sold more than 125 million albums worldwide and won 10 Grammy Awards. Known for hits like "Enter Sandman," "Nothing Else Matters," and "Master of Puppets," the band is still composed of core members James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillo. Their latest album, 72 Seasons, was released in 2023.

Metallica's last Syracuse performances were in 1986 and 1989 at the War Memorial, and in 1994 and 1996 at the New York State Fairgrounds. The Syracuse concert will be the band’s only stop in New York state during the 2025 tour.

You Have to See ENHYPEN's 'Magic' Cover of a Queen Classic

ENYPEN dropped their third mini-album, Manifesto: Day 1 , earlier this week, taking over Billboard ‘s Instagram on July 4 with a behind-the-scenes look at the “media circus” surrounding their highly anticipated album. (Check out the IG takeover on our account .) The six-song project dropped six months after the group’s first studio repackage album Dimension : Answer was released in January. The band  teased  Manifesto : Day 1 on social media in mid-June with a promotion calendar, which included dates for concept mood boards, photos, films, and music videos leading up to the release.

In June, the Korean act put their own spin  on a  Queen  classic as part of their studio session with Coke. Performing “A Kind of Magic,” ENHYPEN transformed the title track from  Queen ’s 1986 album into an atmospheric, breezy hit. ENHYPEN’s first studio album, DIMENSION: DILEMMA , was released in October 2021 and debuted at No. 11 on the Billboard 200 album chart.

Zayn Malik announces first ever solo tour – but fans need to act quickly for tickets

Zayn Malik attends the Off-White fashion show during the September 2024

Zayn Malik has announced that he is set to go on his first-ever solo tour – 9 years after he left One Direction.

The singer revealed on social media that he will be going on tour in just 35 days, marking the first time he’s toured since he was in the iconic X-Factor formed boyband.

The six-date UK tour will commence in the UK in Edinburgh on November 20, with stops in Leeds, Manchester, London, and Wolverhampton, before concluding on   December 3 in Newcastle.

The tour will also stretch into the US, kicking off on October 25 for five dates across major cities.

The announcement is hugely exciting – but there’s a major catch as the singer is only performing at intimate small venues across the UK.

This means fans will be fighting for less than 20,000 UK tickets for what is set to be a hugely sought-after, and long-awaited tour.

O2 Academy in Edinburgh – 3,000

O2 Academy in Leeds – 2,300

O2 Apollo in Manchester – 3,500

Wolverhampton The Halls – 3,400

O2 City Hall in Newcastle – 2,135

Since leaving the boyband One Direction in 2015, the singer has released four solo albums titled: Mind of Mine (2016), Icarus Falls (2018), Nobody is Listening (2021), and Room Under the Stairs (2024).

His first album was a huge success and included tracks such as Pillowtalk, Like I Would, and Wrong featuring Kehlani.

Following the success of this debut album the artist was scheduled to perform at several promotional events.

However, he cancelled his gig at the Capital Summertime Ball. He apologised to fans and blamed his ‘anxiety’. He then cancelled other promotional appearances and performances as he continued to struggle with the ‘worst anxiety of his career.’

The post read: ‘To all those people who have been waiting to see me perform at the Capital Summertime Ball today. I flew into the UK last night to appear in my home country in front of my family, friends and, most importantly, my UK fans.

‘Unfortunately, anxiety, which has haunted me throughout the last few months around live performances has got the better of me… with the magnitude of the event, I have suffered the worst anxiety of my career.

‘I cannot apologize enough, but I want to be honest with everyone who has patiently waited to see me. I promise I will do my best to make this up to everybody I’ve let down today.

‘I know those who suffer from anxiety will understand, and I hope those who don’t can empathize with my situation.’

The 31-year-old crashed Jimmy Fallon’s talk show for the second time in six months last night to announce his tour.

The host was ‘shocked’ as last night Zayn approached the host with a mug and a note.

‘Zayn! Wait Zayn?’ said Jimmy feigning surprise.

The singer then put on one of his new tunes, danced a little, handed Jimmy the note, and exited the stage.

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video

Reading the note Jimmy said in a very poor English accent: ‘Hey Jimmy, great to see you mate. I’m going on me first-ever solo tour this autumn.

‘So maybe when you’re done picking apples with ya buds you can come check out my Stairway to the Sky tour across the US and UK.

‘I’m making an official announcement tomorrow morning, let me know what date you wanna come.’

Zayn previously pulled off a similar stunt when he appeared on the show in March to hand Jimmy a note announcing his then-new single What I Am.

Zayn crashes TV show to make huge announcement

Since his initial success he has yet to announce a tour, so this brand new tour will be huge news for fans who have eagerly followed his solo career for the past nine years.

Following his television announcement fans took to social media to share their excitement.

‘THE WAIT IS OVER!!’ commented Milys_mind on the video from The Tonight Show.

‘I’m crying like after so many years, we’re finally gonna get a zayn tour,’ said AmeeraKane.

Omg I thought this day would never come,’ said Dianaerikapaz.

This rank-and-file PGA Tour pro’s first DP World Tour start has already been eye-opening

W ENTWORTH, England — That so few American players compete in the BMW PGA Championship, the DP World Tour’s flagship event, is an annual disappointment for the Old World circuit. And this time round is no different. Led by Billy Horschel, the event’s 2021 champion, this week's U.S. contingent has only eight players competing.

Still, part of that small band playing for the first time is Peter Malnati. The World No. 88 is here courtesy of a new category that exempts “a maximum of the leading available 10 players who are entered into this tournament and are not otherwise exempt from within the top 70 of the FedEx Cup Standings at the conclusion of the 2024 FedEx Cup Playoffs.”

Malnati was 65th on that prestigious list and so eligible to take advantage of what he is calling “an unexpected opportunity” amidst what he had originally planned to be a six-week break. And the 37-year-old, one of the game’s great enthusiasts, is so far loving every minute.

“I’ve never been to Wentworth,” says the Knoxville, Tenn., resident. “And it was only recently that I discovered there is a category here for me this week. I wasn’t planning to come. But I’ve always wanted to play a bit more around the world. That isn’t exactly easy for me at the moment. I have a 2-year-old and a 5-year-old at home. So not ideal for globe-trotting. That said, this is an easy trip from East Coast America.”

Further convincing Malnati that the journey would prove worthwhile is that, through his membership of the PGA Tour Policy Board, he has had contact with DP World Tour chief executive Guy Kinnings.

“Through him I got to know how much the DP World Tour puts into this event,” says Malnati, who will be joined by his wife on the weekend, before the pair take a couple more days to be tourists in London. “So I wanted to come see it. I hope to be part of it all late on Sunday. But whatever, I can’t wait to see it, too. This course is such a great setting.”

Also helping Malnati’s level of enjoyment is the hospitality he has been shown by a friend in Ryan Fox. The treatment the American has enjoyed from the New Zealander, a rookie on the PGA Tour this year and this week’s defending champion, has only underlined the long-held notion that life on the Old World circuit contrasts sharply with that in the New World.

“There’s not a ton of camaraderie on the PGA Tour,” Malnati says. “You land at an airport, pick up your courtesy car or rental car and go to a hotel. Everyone tends to stay in different places though. There is some allegiance through where guys went to university. There are few cliques like that. But for the most part, it is a very individualistic tour.

“It’s different here,” he continues. “Yesterday, I joined a group to play a few holes in practice. There were two guys from Spain, Alejandro Del Rey and Santiago Tarrio, and Fabrizio Zanotti from Paraguay. I could tell how they were bonded by their language. They clearly knew each other really well. They go to dinner a lot. They stay in the same hotels. I like that. It’s really cool. There is clearly more of a connectedness on this tour than what we have in the States. Neither is right or wrong, but I like what I’ve seen this week.”

Still, given the fact that he has two small children at home, any notion Malnati may harbor about joining the DP World Tour is on the back burner. That’s not to say he doesn’t fancy giving it a whirl at some stage.

“I know it doesn’t take that much effort in terms of tournament starts to join the DP World Tour,” he says. “And I would love to. I need to get my game in better shape though. This year I was able to play in three of the four majors for the first time. Even though I’m 37, I feel like I’m still improving. So I know I can get my game to the stage where I’m in all four majors every year. And if I do that, I could join over here. I would love to play a few events. I would so love to see Dubai, for example.

“Right now, my golf is very much a priority for me,” he continues. “It is how I provide of my family. But I’m in the middle of the parenting thing, which only underlines how I would need to be in a different place with my game to join this tour. I want to get to the stage where, when I travel, it is to the biggest events in the world. That might come to pass, of course. We might be heading towards a more global tour, who knows?”

On that front, Malnati put on his visionary hat. Like many he is aware that the game would benefit from a series of events that plugs the current chasm that exists between the four majors and regular tour events. The largely unlamented World Golf Championships tried to bridge that gap, but ultimately failed as so many ended up being played in the United States.

“The PGA Tour is still professional golf’s ‘big brother,’” Malnati says. “But the DP World Tour has markets that are hungry for golf. Maybe we need to be more outward looking. There is so much growth potential. So we need WGC equivalents that are truly global and not just the ‘North American Golf Championships.’ They would be phenomenal theater and excite golf fans around the world.”

All of which is easily applicable to this historic event, one that has a “who’s who” of European golf on its list of past champions. Seve Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer, Ian Woosnam, Nick Faldo, Jose Maria Olazabal, Colin Montgomerie, Luke Donald, Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy have all won at Wentworth. But only one American in the last four decades, Horschel, has done likewise. Add that to the list of things that need to change in professional golf.

The singer/songwriter will play 11 shows throughout the U.S. and UK, beginning Oct. 23

Zayn Malik  is finally taking his show on the road.

On Tuesday, Sept. 18, the One Direction alum made a silent, surprise appearance on The Tonight Show where he announced his first-ever solo headlining tour since he left One Direction  in 2015.

Malik, 31, crashed Jimmy Fallon's monologue where he appeared from behind the curtain in a black leather jacket holding a coffee mug and a note for the host, 49. He then proceeded to wave to the audience and took over Fallon's laptop where he played his single "Stardust" from his latest album, Room Under the Stairs , which was released on May 17.

Malik then dropped the coffee mug and the note on the actor/comedian's desk.

Fallon then read the note aloud to an audience in a quasi-British accent, which announced the singer/songwriter's tour.

“Hey Jimmy, great to see you, mate,” he began. “I’m going on my first-ever tour this autumn. So maybe when you’re done picking apples with your buds, you can come check out my Stairway to the Sky tour across the U.S. and UK.”

On Wednesday, Sept. 18, the "Dusk Till Dawn" musician officially announced his Stairway to the Sky tour.

The "intimate 11-city tour" will hit cities throughout the U.S. and U.K. this fall, kicking off on Oct. 23 in San Francisco, and making stops in Las Vegas and Washington before wrapping the North American leg on Nov. 2 in New York City.

On Nov. 30, Malik will then head to the U.K. for a show in Edinburgh, with stops in Manchester, London and more before concluding on Dec. in Newcastle.

Presale tickets for the Stairway to the Sky tour will be available starting Thursday, Sept. 19 with additional presales running throughout the week. A general on-sale will begin on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 11 a.m. local at  inzayn.com .

In May, Malik performed his first-ever headlining solo gig at London’s Shepherd's Bush Empire, which was also his first concert since he left One Direction.

During the gig, he performed songs from Room Under the Stairs for the first time for fans in a night he called “unforgettable” in  an Instagram post .

In  fan-captured footage  of the concert, the "Pillow Talk" artist told the audience, “I missed this," and in a clip he shared himself, he thanked fans for “all of the love and support over the years,” and for waiting for him to perform live.

“This is an exciting night,” Malik said at the show. “I’m very grateful to you all, and I hope you have a great night."

Moulin Rouge The Musical is heading to Manchester for the first time EVER

A story about truth, beauty, freedom; but above all things, love. (Contains affiliate links)

Daisy Jackson

For the first time ever, smash hit show Moulin Rouge The Musical is heading to Manchester on its debut world tour.

The multi-award-winning spectacle has announced an eight week run of shows at the Palace Theatre .

Moulin Rouge The Musical is set to bring ‘a world of splendour and romance, eye-popping excess, glitz, grandeur and glory’ to Manchester next autumn.

The musical, based on Baz Lurhmann’s revolutionary film starring Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman, features more than 70 hit songs from across 160 years of music.

Audiences will hear everything from Offenbach to Lady Gaga as the Palace Theatre stage is transformed into 19th century Paris.

The musical is set amidst the unparalleled extravagance and beauty of the iconic Moulin Rouge nightclub, where the space beneath the red windmill is filled with bohemians and aristocrats, boulevardiers and reprobates.

It follows the tale of lovesick American writer Christian and the subject of his affections, Satine, the star of the Moulin Rouge.

Their glittering love story is halted by the nightclub’s host and mastermind, Harold Zidler, and the Duke of Monroth, who wishes to buy the Moulin Rouge – and with it, Satine.

The all-singing, all-dancing cast also includes starving artist Toulouse-Lautrec and tango dancer Santiago, along with a full line-up of Can Can dancers, musicians, and more.

This is the first time ever that Moulin Rouge The Musical has performed in Manchester, landing at the Palace theatre on 20 August 2025.

Moulin Rouge The Musical is heading to Manchester for the first time EVER

The show has won a whopping 10 2021 Tony Awards (including Best Musical), an Olivier Award, and masses more.

Carmen Pavlovic for Global Creatures, producer of Moulin Rouge! The Musical, said: “It is thrilling that the Manchester Palace will host Moulin Rouge! The Musical next year as part of its world tour.

“Manchester is such a welcoming, lively and culturally vibrant city, world renowned for its rich artistic and musical heritage.

“A city also known for defending free speech and liberty of opinion, so we know that the bohemians and artisans of the Montmartre will be embraced with open arms. We can’t wait to welcome Manchester to the Moulin Rouge!”

Casting is still to be announced.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical will come to the Palace Theatre Manchester between Wednesday 20 August and Saturday 4 October 2025. For information and to be first in line for tickets, sign up at  moulinrougemusical.com

They meet online through a home exchange website, and impulsively switch homes for the holiday.

Shortly after arriving at their destinations, both women find the last thing either wants or expects – a new romance.

Let’s start off by making two things clear: nailing a tried and true classic well is no mean feat and, two, fans are very precious when it comes to adaptation – Murder on the Orient Express at The Lowry, rather fittingly, barrelled through those obstacles not like a luxury liner but like a freight train.

Yes, the iconic Agatha Christie tale and quintessential ‘whodunnit’ may have ironically been done to death at this point (most recently resurrected on the big screen by director and Hollywood’s Hercule Poirot, Kenneth Branagh), but this new stage production felt much more refreshing than the blockbuster.

Put simply, merely going where many have gone before and expecting results or similar success isn’t a given. Written and adapted by Ken Ludwig and directed by Lucy Bailey, this latest Murder on the Orient Express now on at the legendary Lowry Theatre is a must-see as far as we’re concerned.

What the creators, along with the whole cast and crew, have done with this treasured text is elevate it not just to a play that will leave any theatre-goer walking away satisfied but also restore the true light and shade to the textbook murder mystery that has more high points than we can squeeze into 1000 words.

murder on the orient express tickets salford

A small but stunning and dynamic set

First and foremost, we can’t begin anywhere else other than applauding what they’ve managed to achieve with the set alone.

It was one of our first big questions going into the performance. How are they going to pull this off and create that sense of motion around the actors on stage? Is it going to look any good? Turns out we had nothing to worry about whatsoever.

Combining nothing more than three movable train cars donned in full Edwardian decor, a few tables for breakaway scenes and clever use of an overhead screen to portray elements like snowdrift weather and even wheels chugging along the tracks, much like the plot, it always felt like things were on the move.

Twinned with excellent use of music and sound effects – both ambient and authentic in the case of Christine Kavanagh as the delightfully devilish Mrs Helen Hubbard, whose late-night sing-song felt like genuinely peaking into someone’s cabin after a few tipples – the whole surround just works so well.

They did a great job of creating these little vignettes within each train window, almost like sitting across from an apartment block and peaking into the living rooms of each flat, people-watching as their stories play out, only with the bonus of these strangers being mic’d up so you don’t have to fill in the blanks.

And none of these little snapshots felt throwaway whatsoever. You only have to hear the passion that Ludwig, Bailey and the star of the show, Michael Maloney, spoke of in the lead-up to opening night to hear how much everyone involved had thrown themselves into every inch of the show.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Agatha Christie's Murder on The Orient Express (@orientexpressplay)

Poirot done to perfection

But let’s not beat around the bush here: even if you’ve seen it a dozen times before, you come for the murder mystery and you stay to see the moustachioed “magician” at work.

The entire supporting cast was wonderful, in truth – we particularly loved the aforementioned Kavanagh and her ‘just the right amount of chaos’; Bob Barrett’s energy as Monsieur Bouc and the permanently frantic Greta Ohlsson, done so well by Rebecca Charles – but Maloney is absolutely masterful as Poirot.

To be honest, besides a couple of accent slips here and there (podody’s nerfect), everyone up on that stage was a joy to watch embody these timeless characters and made for a well-balanced ensemble, but this might be our favourite portrayal of the talented detective since the almighty David Suchet himself.

Whether it be in the expertly delivering lengthy monologues, the many moments of self-deprecation, mourning his youth and always remaining the wittiest player on stage, or breaking up those moments of levity with rare but sudden flashes of frustration that actually catch you off-guard, he was flawless.

Similar to how he keeps every one of the suspects in his pocket from minute one, he had the audience in the palm of his hand for the entire duration and the timbre of that French—sorry, Belgian* dialect barely dips for even a second.

The drama is great but where it truly shines is in the laughs

Lastly, speaking of that levity, perhaps the thing we loved most about the whole approach to this version of Murder on the Orient Express is that it isn’t so much a tense tragedy as it is a dramatic comedy.

The chances are that almost everyone in that theatre knows the synopsis of this long-loved tale virtually inside and out, so it was always going to be hard to build really pulse-raising suspense and intrigue, but they manage it by lulling you into those lighter moments and letting the performances shine.

And then BANG: suddenly a big twist, a volta; the crescendo after a period of precisely paced and carefully crafted conversation. It hits you like a gunshot echoing throughout the carriages, a sudden stab to the gut stifled in a quiet train compartment yet still somehow felt from the comfort of your seat.

Everyone gets their handful of one-liners, those comic pauses that dwell just a half-second too long and then some, but it never feels forced or overdone. The full spectrum of emotions is packed into just under two hours and it’s nothing short of a triumph from start to finish.

Without spoiling too much, there is one sound – not even an actual line of dialogue per se – from Maloney when conversing with the Countess (Mila Carter) that we’re still chuckling about now.

We won’t be sold bold as to give this a star rating but let’s just say we wholly recommend visiting what is without a doubt the best thing on at Salford Quays right now.

How to plan a trip around the world

Making the fantasy of a global odyssey an achievable reality is not as impossible as it might seem.

Combining a series of once-in-a-lifetime experiences into a single around-the-world trip can feel like the ultimate expression of luxury travel. It can be a daunting prospect though, with many contending factors to consider. Here's how to start planning the ultimate round-the-world trip.

1. Take to the sky

Air travel is, predictably, the simplest way to traverse the globe. Start by purchasing an around-the-world plane ticket through an airline alliance — coalitions of different airlines which let you pay for all of your flights in a single transaction. The alliance offers regional passes which might work better should you want to devote the bulk of your time to one or two continents.

There are three main players: Star Alliance, OneWorld and Skyteam; the latter, however, has suspended sales of RTW tickets. Star Alliance is a confederation of 26 airlines covering 1,200 airports in 98% of the world’s nations, while OneWorld’s 13 airlines serve 1,000 destinations across almost as many countries.

The small print varies, but fliers must always keep to one global direction, east or west (the latter better suits your circadian rhythm), with no backtracking; must only cross the Atlantic and Pacific oceans once each; must start and finish in the same country; and must travel for a period between 10 days and one year.

Convenience is a benefit here, allowing you to minimise paperwork. It’s worth noting that some countries, such as China, also require proof of an outbound air ticket before issuing visas.

How to do it:   Star Alliance offers a 133-day itinerary from London via Istanbul, Dubai, Bangkok, Sydney, Los Angeles and New York from £2,580 per person.

2. Ride the rails

A century ago, taking extended rail journeys was one of the only means of long-distance travel. Today, trains are a great option for travellers looking to minimise their carbon footprint and take a slower, more measured route.

Recapturing the romance of the past, around-the-world specialists Travel Nation can tailor-make odysseys involving   separate train journeys. Vietnam’s Reunification Express, an Outback crossing aboard the Australian Ghan and a ride on the Rocky Mountaineer in Canada can all feature.

How to do it:   Travel Nation ’s 74-night, rail-focused global tour costs from £17,760 per person, including flights, trains, accommodation, most meals and some excursions.

3. Go Private

For those who truly want to travel in style, it’s possible to circumnavigate the globe by private jet through National Geographic Expeditions. These trips are based around epic itineraries whose remarkable destinations are brought to life by a experts and groundbreaking researchers in various fields, who most travellers never get to meet.

On the 24-day Around the World by Private Jet expedition, you can visit 10 UNESCO World Heritage sites. Among the trip’s standouts are Easter Island’s Moai statues, Angkor’s jungle-flanked temple complexes, rock-carved Petra and a Serengeti safari. Departing from Washington, DC, up to 75 passengers will travel VIP-style in a customised Boeing 757, bedding down throughout the adventure in five-star hotels or lodges.

How to do it: National Geographic Expeditions ’ 23-night Around the World by Private Jet trip starts from £77,100 per person, all-inclusive, including medical evacuation insurance. Departures on 10 March, 29 October and 28 December 2024.

4. Head overland

Travellers who don’t mind hitting the open road can try Oasis Overland, a tour company specialising in overland travel. Its longest offering is a 293-day trip from the UK to Cairo via an anticlockwise loop along much of the African coast, plus Victoria Falls and Zanzibar. The slew of highlights include the Sahara desert, the Giza Pyramids and East Africa’s wildlife-rich plains.

The 16 (or fewer) group members will ride in one of Oasis Overland’s bright yellow trucks, built for traversing bumpy roads while offering as much comfort as possible. Nights are almost exclusively spent camping, and everyone is expected to contribute by pitching tents or cooking dinners.

You could also combine trips by flying from Cairo to Istanbul and then joining another overland tour all the way to Singapore, for example.

How to do it: Oasis Overland ’s 292-night UK to Cairo expedition starts from £9,495 per person, including all transport (except flights from the UK to Gibraltar or Malaga) and a selection of excursions.

5. Do it yourself

Arranging everything yourself is an option — most easily accomplished by purchasing multi-destination flights through a comparison website such as kiwi.com or Skyscanner.

A big upside to this is that you can work out something closely aligned to your specific needs; it’ll require a fair bit of time, though, and you’ll lose out in terms of flexibility — changing dates can be tricky — and cancellation cover.

It’s usually more convenient to aim for large airport hubs — the likes of Bangkok, Dallas, Dubai, Heathrow, Paris and Singapore — as the many competing services provide more options. A typical around-the-world ticket will involve something along the lines of London — Istanbul — Bangkok — Singapore — Sydney — Los Angeles — New York — London. From these hubs, you’ll be well placed to add in more obscure destinations in between.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that you don’t have to fly between each stage. For instance, it’s possible to travel from London to Istanbul by train, lowering your carbon footprint in the process. Or, rather than flying from Bangkok to Singapore, you could get a boat from the Thai capital to Koh Samui and continue from there instead. A reliable tool for establishing train, bus, boat or taxi costs is the website Rome2Rio, and it’s worth investigating the likes of Amtrak rail passes in the US, Eurail Passes for European trains or Greyhound coach tickets covering Australia’s east coast.

Accommodation is something to decide on in advance. Be sure to have all hotel bookings locked in place well ahead of time. Hostels are a good bet, especially if you’re travelling solo or planning an ad-hoc approach during each stage of the trip, but can be lacking in privacy and comforts. House or apartment rentals can be much more comfortable and convenient, particularly for longer stays.

How to do it: A sample 147-day itinerary from London via Istanbul, Dubai, Bangkok, Sydney, Los Angeles and New York from kiwi.com starts at £2,189 per person, including checked luggage.

6. Enlist a pro

One of the best ways to arrange an air-based around-the-world itinerary is by booking with a specialist agent or operator such as Trailfinders, Travel Nation or AirTreks. This can cut out a lot of organisational stress, while also enabling you to take advantage of these companies’ many years of experience. These firms often have access to special deals and aren’t constrained to particular airlines or alliances, allowing them to further improve the offerings to their clients.

The AirTreks website even has a trip planner tool listing a series of suggested activities, interests and attractions such as hiking, beaches, meditation or family travel, providing an extra level of choice at the planning stage.

If you’re interested in earning air miles, specify this to the agent so that they can concentrate on finding flights that qualify. Agents will also be able to suggest tempting additional stops — Taiwan, maybe, or a pause in Oman — which can be a great way of adding an extra bit of excitement to burgeoning itineraries.

Finally, a specialist company can also take care of — or advise on — vaccinations (such as malaria), and certification and visas you’ll need, saving you plenty of legwork.

How to do it: AirTrek s’ nine-stop ticket from London via Paris, Florence, Venice, Athens, Singapore, Sydney, Auckland and Los Angeles costs from £1,325 to £1,770.

7. Learn to sail

Land ahoy! You might just get to utter those words by signing up for a unique sailing adventure with London-based operator Another World Adventures, which can arrange for you to join a classic, square-rigged tall ship for 90 days as it makes its way around the world on a 455-day voyage. Once on board, you’ll learn how to trim the sails, haul mizzen spinnakers and lean on trade winds to cross the tropics. No experience is required, and participants will become part of a tight-knit crew and make friends for life.

It doesn’t matter at which point on its itinerary the ship happens to be, as it’s entirely possible to join subsequent legs. Setting sail from Bali on 6 November 2023, leg three sees the ship call at the Indian Ocean islands of Rodrigues and Reunion before arriving in Cape Town on 6 February. Beginning one day later, the fourth and final stage is via Namibia, the British overseas territory of St Helena, several Caribbean islands and, on 13 July, Nova Scotia in Canada.

If you’d prefer to wait and tackle the whole trip — the other two legs are Nova Scotia to Tahiti, and Tahiti to Bali — then Another World Adventures (which also offers other, similar experiences) expects it to start in 2025.

How to do it:   Another World Adventures offers 90 nights, full board, from £13,600 per person, including transport, port fees and instruction.

8. Cruise along

Ever more around-the-world voyages are being offered by cruise lines. To join one, you’ll need one important thing: lots of spare time. The circular itineraries are mostly more than 100 days in length, with Royal Caribbean’s Ultimate World Cruise maxing out at 274 nights via seven continents and around 150 stops. These kinds of journeys really fit the ‘trip of a lifetime’ tag, running up to £100,000 per person.

Notably, 2023 marks a century since the world’s first continuous passenger cruise ship completed its pioneering journey. Chartered by the American Express Company, Cunard’s SS Laconia arrived back in New York City after completing a monumental six-month sailing via Japan, Singapore, India and Egypt.

They also sell out quicker than almost any other cruise, partly due to having a limited number of departures. Holland America Line, for example, opened bookings this summer on its new 2025 Grand World Voyage. Departing from Fort Lauderdale in Florida, this is a six-continent, 124-day round-trip which transits the Panama Canal before visiting Callao (for excursions to Machu Picchu), Easter Island, Tahiti, the Great Barrier Reef, the Seychelles, Cape Town, Kenya, Jordan and Barcelona among 46 stops.

How to do it:   Holland America Line’s 123-night Grand World Voyage starts from £19,900 per person, full board, including complimentary airport transfers, a $500 (£400) air credit and up to £6,700 per person in onboard spending credits if booked by 3 June 2024.

9. Hop aboard a cargo ship

A rather more adventurous way of sailing the seas is aboard a cargo ship or freighter cruise. Carrying large containers of clothes, electrical equipment, foods and most other things between the world’s major ports, some of these allot space for four to 12 passengers.

Single, twin or double cabins are the norm, usually with sea-facing windows as well as a sitting area, a desk, a shower and a toilet. A few boats come with a pool, but most are very simple — they’re built for work, not pleasure, after all — and you certainly won’t find a spa or casino (though playing cards with the crew members isn't unheard of). All meals are provided in the on-board canteen.

The major appeal is the sense of serenity — watching the ocean drift by and having time to gather your thoughts or write that novel you’ve always planned.

This can also be an amazing way to tick off some hard-to-reach places. Take freighters travelling to Singapore from New Zealand; be it for fuel and supplies or to make a drop-off, these stop at numerous Pacific islands en route, occasionally for a couple of days. That said, some port calls are too quick for guests to go ashore.

Note that good health and unaided mobility — due to steep gangways and lots of stairs — are mandatory, and it’s not suited for children or elderly travellers.

How to do it:   Cargo Ship Voyages offers a cargo ship crossing from Rotterdam to Cuba (estimated at 16 nights) from £1,880 per person, which includes all meals.
