Born in lockdown, Underwater displays the virtuoso’s unmistakable sound in its purest and most intimate form: just Einaudi and his piano.

Underwater features 12 transcendent solo piano tracks, beautifully showcasing Einaudi’s luminous, emotive, effortlessly lyrical, and supremely refined sound. This new album embraces the simple purity of songwriting, each note touched with an innocent, delicate beauty.

On the making of Underwater during the pandemic, Einaudi explains: “The music came naturally, more than ever before. I felt a sense of freedom to abandon myself and let the music flow differently. I didn’t have a filter between me and what came out of the piano; it felt very pure. The title Underwater is a metaphor—it is an expression of a very fluid dimension, without interference from outside.”

Underwater follows an exciting year for Einaudi, which saw the release of the soundtracks to Oscar, BAFTA, and Golden Globe-winning films Nomadland and The Father (which include tracks from his immensely popular 2019 release Seven Days Walking ), compilation album Cinema , showcasing Einaudi’s composition achievements in film and TV, and new podcast mini-series Experience: The Ludovico Einaudi Story , which features celebrated filmmakers including multiple award-winning actor and director Russel Crowe ( Gladiator ), Oscar-winning director Chloe Zhao ( Nomadland ), Academy Award winner Florian Zeller ( The Father ), Shane Meadows ( This is England ) and Eric Toledano ( The Intouchables ).

Einaudi is one of the most ubiquitous contemporary composers of the century, repeatedly topping the classical charts globally, and becoming the biggest streamed classical artist of all time. Ludovico Einaudi was on a North American tour, playing before audiences in the thousands, when he stopped by the NPR office to play a far more intimate setting: a Tiny Desk set. It's the first tour for the Italian pianist and composer since the beginning of the pandemic, following the release of his 2022 album, Underwater . It's an album that captures how many have felt in the pandemic — feeling underwater, or trapped in another world.

It's that relatable feeling — like we're treading water trying to remain above the surface, powering through the adversity of the last two years — that makes Einaudi's music so emotional and reflective. The pulsating strings of the opening song to his Tiny Desk concert, the track "Experience" from his 2013 album In A Time Lapse , demand attention, captivating the audience. The fact that the song recently went viral due to a TikTok trend only proves how welcoming Einaudi's music is — and why he is the most-streamed classical pianist of all time.

Ludovico Einaudi's presence at the piano keeps you waiting for more. His fingers glide over the keys effortlessly, but he never seems rushed. As he plays, his eyes are closed. And in this concert, you can tell his music moves him as much as it does his audience.

The most-streamed classical artist of all time, Ludovico Einaudi returned last year with his first new solo piano album in 20 years, ‘Underwater’, a collection of 12 newly-composed solo piano tracks.

The release of ‘Underwater’ followed some astounding achievements for Einaudi with the release of soundtracks to Oscar, BAFTA, and Golden Globe-winning films Nomadland and The Father (which include tracks from his chart-topping 2019 release ‘Seven Days Walking’), and the compilation album ‘Cinema’, featuring his composition achievements in film and TV.

Einaudi has quietly become one of the most successful musicians in the world. His hauntingly beautiful and evocative music tops the classical charts worldwide, particularly here in the UK and in his home country Italy. He has performed to huge crowds at the world’s most prestigious venues; in 2022 alone he sold out three nights at Eventim Apollo followed by three nights at the Royal Albert Hall.

Ludovico Einaudi ist einer der bekanntesten und erfolgreichsten Pianisten und Komponisten Italiens. Als Vertreter der Neo-Klassik komponiert er Filmmusik, Bühnenmusik und Orchesterwerke. Unter seinen über 20 Alben befinden sich Meisterwerke wie „Una Mattina“ (2004), „In A Time Lapse“ (2013) und „Elements“ (2015), die bis an die Spitze der europäischen Klassik-Charts gelangten. Ludovico Einaudis Shows finden regelmäßig vor ausverkauften Rängen statt.

Klassik, Jazz, Ambient, Pop, Weltmusik: Ludovico Einaudis Musik hat viele Einflüsse und lässt sich nur schwer in eine Schublade stecken. Der Rockliebhaber hört persönlich gerne PJ Harvey, Radiohead, Björk und Coldplay. Diese Einflüsse lässt er geschickt in seine Kompositionen einfließen. Einaudis gefühlvoller Klassikpop zieht seit über 20 Jahren Fans der unterschiedlichsten Musikrichtungen an – besonders beliebt ist er in seiner Heimat Italien und in England.

Musikalische Anfänge

In ein musisches Elternhaus in Turin hineingeboren, erlernt Einaudi von seiner Mutter früh das Klavierspielen. Am Mailänder Guiseppe-Verdi-Konservatorium wird er zum klassischen Pianisten und Komponisten ausgebildet. Seine Karriere beginnt er mit Auftragswerken wie etwa für das Pariser Ircam-Institut oder die Zentrale Hochschule für Bildende Kunst in Peking. Bald macht er sich einen Namen als Komponist von Orchesterwerken und Bühnenmusik, darunter vor allem Ballettstücke.

Seine ersten Veröffentlichungen „Stanze“ (1997) und „Le Onde“ (1998) schlagen zunächst im englischen Radio ein. Der Soloklavier-Zyklus „Le Onde“ ist Ludovico Einaudis Durchbruch: Er behauptet sich lange an der Spitze der britischen Classic FM-Charts. Das dazugehörige Album „Le Onde“ wird zu einem großen Erfolg in England und Italien.

Ludovico Einaudi: Meister der Filmmusik

Nach „Le Onde“ widmet sich Ludovico Einaudi verstärkt seiner Karriere als Komponist für Filmmusik. Er komponiert fortan Soundtracks zu Filmen, darunter:

• 2004: „Preis des Verlangens“
• 2006: „This Is England“
• 2011: „Ziemlich beste Freunde“
• 2014: „Das Versprechen eines Lebens“
• 2020: „Nomadland“

Seine Kompositionen zum gefeierten Film „This Is England“ (2006) und der TV-Fortsetzung „This Is England ’86“ (2010) werden für einen BAFTA-Award nominiert. Der Klassikpop des Ausnahmekünstlers findet von nun an immer größere Beachtung in der breiten Öffentlichkeit.

Album für Album ein Erfolg

Ludovico Einaudis wachsende Beliebtheit schlägt sich auch in den guten Chartplatzierungen seiner Alben nieder. Mit dem für das Soloklavier komponierten „Una Mattina“ (2004) erreicht er die Spitze der britischen Klassik-Charts und spielt seine erste ausverkaufte Tournee. „Divenire“ (2007) stürmt die europäischen Klassik-Charts, verkauft sich über 300.000 Mal und ist der Start zu einer großen Ludovico-Einaudi-Tour mit über 80 Konzerten in ganz Europa.

„Cloudland“ (2009) kommt mit wildem Elektrosound, „Nightbook“ (2009) ist dagegen meditativ und besinnlich. Mit „Islands – Essential Einaudi“ (2011) gelingt endgültig der internationale Durchbruch. Ob Mexiko, USA oder Asien: Tickets für Ludovico Einaudi sind in aller Welt heiß begehrt, Konzerte auch in Japan, Thailand, Vietnam und China ausverkauft. „In A Time Lapse“ (2013) und „Elements“ (2015) werden die kommerziell erfolgreichsten Alben des italienischen Pianisten.

Es war einfach ein tolles Erlebnis. Ludovico Einaudi hat 2,5 Stunden ohne Pause gespielt. Die Zeit verging wie im Flug. Es wirkte mühelos. Eigentlich wurden nahezu alle Emotionen angesprochen, von leise/nachdenklich bis fröhlich und fulminant/ fortissimo, war alles dabei.

Ein Erlebnis für die Sinne

Wir sind extra aus Sachsen angereist um Ludovico Einaudi hautnah erleben zu können.Es war unbeschreiblich schön. Jeder einzelne Ton den Ludovico anspielte ging unter die Haut. Einfach wunderschön👌👌👌👌😌Danke Ludovico Einaudi

Eine musikalische Reise

Ich selbst konnte leider nicht teilnehmen, da ich auf unser Baby aufgepasst habe, aber mein Freund und ein Kommilitone von mir besuchten das Konzert von Ludovico Einaudi. Daher folgt nun die Bewertung meines Freundes: Eine ganz besondere musikalische Reise. Bühnenbild minimalistisch, wie auch das Ensemble, aber nicht so das Dargebotene. Was hier von Einaudi und drei weiteren Personen abgeliefert wird, ist etwas, was lange in Erinnerung bleibt. Hervorzuheben ist meines Erachtens der Violist, der die treibenden und teils repititiven, aber mit doch subtilen Nuancen versehenen Abschnitte grandios meisterte. Alles zusammen eine absolut einzigartige und gelungene Darbietung, Chapeau!
