What can be said about Eminem that hasn’t already been said? The most successful rapper of all time has sold nearly a quarter of a billion albums and changed the world of music and pop culture forever.

From his less-than-humble beginnings to the pinnacle of notoriety and superstardom, Marshall Mathers has truly seen it all.

Born in 1972 to his mother Debbie and father Bruce, Mathers’ family broke apart soon after forming. His father abandoned his wife and infant son and moved to California. Mathers and his mother moved between Detroit and Missouri, typically changing homes every year or so and living with family members. When he was a teenager, Mathers wrote letters to his father that all came back with “return to sender” marked on them.

For most of Mathers’ youth, he and his mother lived in a poor neighborhood in Detroit, and he was often targeted for bullying. But he had a creative outlet: He loved storytelling. He first dreamt of becoming a comic book artist, but then he discovered rap. The first rap song he ever heard was “Reckless” featuring Ice-T, given to him by his mother’s half-brother Ronnie. Ronnie played a positive role in Mathers’ childhood, mentoring him and giving him emotional support.

Marshall repeated ninth grade three times before dropping out of Lincoln High School at age 17. He had already begun rapping by this time and frequently snuck into the neighboring high school with his friend to compete in freestyle rap battles during lunch. Weekends saw them performing at open mics on West 7 Mile Road, the epicenter of Detroit’s underground rap scene. He spent much of his free time working on rhymes for different words in the English language.

Meanwhile, Mathers fought constantly with his mother, who was described as having a “very suspicious, almost paranoid personality” by a social worker. In 1987, Debbie invited runaway Kim Scott into their home. Marshall and Kim began a tumultuous relationship several years later. By 1988, he had adopted the stage name MC Double M and was recording demo tapes and appearing in music videos. Mathers’ uncle Ronnie committed suicide in 1991, a traumatic experience that caused Mathers to stop speaking for several days.

He formed The Dirty Dozen, also known as D12, in 1996 — the same year he released his debut album, Infinite, which was a commercial failure. DJs who rejected his tracks asked him why he didn’t just go into rock and roll, which fueled him to craft darker, angrier tracks. He and Kim lived in a dangerous neighborhood and were robbed multiple times, and Marshall was working for minimum wage washing dishes. Before Christmas of that year, he had been fired and attempted suicide.

In 1997, Mathers developed an alter ego called Slim Shady and recorded the Slim Shady EP, released by Web Entertainment. The EP attracted some attention, even getting mentioned by hip-hop magazine The Source in 1998.

After placing second in a nationwide rap battle in Los Angeles, Mathers’ EP got noticed by Dr. Dre. The two began working on The Slim Shady LP, which was released in February 1999. It went triple platinum by the end of the year. The album’s violent lyrics were an outlet for Eminem’s anger and frustration, and they struck a strange chord with the public.

The next decade was all his. His second full-length album, The Marshall Mathers LP, came out in May 2000 and sold nearly 2 million copies before the end of its first week. Mathers toured that year with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Ice Cube. In 2001, he was the only guest on Jay-Z’s album, The Blueprint.

In May 2002, Eminem released The Eminem Show, the best-selling album of the year with 27 million copies sold worldwide. Encore followed in 2004, showcasing more of his political commentary. His subsequent albums include Relapse, Recovery, The Marshall Mathers LP 2, and, of course, the soundtrack to the semi-autobiographical blockbuster film 8 Mile.

Eminem’s career was relatively quiet in the late 2010s, until the earth-shaking moment he criticized then-President Trump in the 2017 freestyle “The Storm.” This represented a comeback moment for Eminem — his support for Black Americans resonated at a time when social unrest and inequality were becoming highly talked about.

Live reviews

“EMINEM.” Seeing his name lit across the stage was mind blowing. As if natural instinct, everyone started chanting, ‘EM-IN-EM, EM-IN-EM’, until the legend himself took the stage, wearing a get up that only the King of Rap could pull off.

Without a breathe of a moment, he jumps directly in to rapping, setting the crowd on fire as most of us have been waiting in the stadium for hours, and some of us have been waiting for years. As far back as we can remember, Eminem was there, withstanding the wrath of time and still being able to top the charts many, many years later.

The audience was as real as he is, old, young (too young), male, female and people of all colours were there. I could see it in their eyes, as they threw their hands to the beat and mouthed every word along with him, that at this moment, this is all they have ever wanted. When songs like “Lose Yourself”, “Stan”, “Not Afraid” and a few others were sung, tears flowed freely, because like every other person, those songs were a part of various struggles and difficulties you or someone you are close to have faced. That’s not to say the concert is a downer, no, not at all. Once you’ve wiped your tears away, “Without Me”, “The Real Slim Shady”, “Rap God” and more is performed, to get your body moving, dancing, jumping, flashing, whatever you are in to. Aside from the upbeat tracks, his stage presence is something else, he manages to be filthy and charming all at the same time.

And by the end of the show, you’re speechless. Firstly, because you’re in shock due to the fact that you have never experienced a level of such greatness, and secondly, because your voice is gone as rapping alongside the one and only Eminem, is not as easy as he makes it look.

Eminem in concert in LA was enough to make me extraordinarily happy, but for him to perform some hits from the Recovery album made the entire night absolutely worth it!! It was nostalgic for him to perform his old hits, taking me back to elementary and junior high school days, but Recovery was the album that solidified my love and appreciation for his artistry, talent and heart!

Em's portion of the show was absolutely fantastic, he is truly a lyrical genius and he never fails to deliever with an energy and intensity that is infectious! I would have been more than happy (and actually would have preferred) if the show was just his performance, but I can fully understand why he would need someone to fill some time to give him a break between his sets. When he performs it feels like he is literally pouring his heart and soul out on the stage and that has to be beyond exhausting for him, hence the need for Rihanna. Her part was ok. The venue (the Rose Bowl) was an experience in itself. Parking wasn't as bad as I was anticipating, but it was very expensive. The arena was packed solid, but I never felt too overwhelmed by people even though I was on the floor. It was just great to be surrounded by people who were enjoying the concert. If you ever have a chance to see Em in concert, I would say, GO!

I have been a huge Eminem fan since he came out with Cleaning Out My Closet, I was very very young at the time so I've been a fan since I was a little kid. I was very much looking forward to my first Eminem concert, and on 8/16 at MetLife Stadium, my dream finally came true. The website said they would start at 7:30, but they didn't start until like 8:40, but the whole concert made up for it. Eminem was amazing, I honestly have no words to describe the experience except that it was very unreal and I had to pinch myself a few times just to make sure this was really happening to me. He played a lot of his songs off his first two albums and then some songs off of Recovery & MMLP2. For anyone who had seats or had Floor B GA, you really missed out on an amazing view & concert. The view from the 200s & 300s probably sucked, they could only probably see Eminem & Rihanna from the jumbo screens. Rihanna was great too, she was very sweet & funny live, as well as sexy & seductive. Eminem was funny and his stage presence was wonderful. This was an experience I'd LOVE to have again, an experience many should get to enjoy and from the amazing view in GA. I do hope he goes on tour again in the next year or so.

Fucking amazing!! Man’s music has saved my life so many times! A real artist and an incredible lyricist... unbaleaveablw how much talent Marshal has. Tears dropped as he sung songs that touched my heart and took me back from the grave... I love him for all he has done for me an my recovery... if only I was able to thank him in person... In rehab they say to believe in power that’s greater than me, as my god. Eminem is that god to me. A powerful man that I know has saved so many lives just from his music. The show was the best show I’ve ever attended. Only issue was I wasn’t quick enough to get a ticket I the pit. I would have rocked up at 6am before the concert just to get into the front row and thank the ma. For everything he has done for my life..

But I don’t think I’ll ever get the chance to thanks him and praise Marshal. But I doubt I’ll

Ever get the chance to express the abundance of help, love and strength I receive when ever I lisfen laying down to his tracks!!! An I doubt he’ll ever truely know how many llivws he has saves and touched!!! 100/10 for the show!!! Bring him back pleaseeee!!!

Where do I start, right let’s try.... I’ve been lucky enough to see Eminem 3 Times now, first time was v festival where he was absolutely superb and stole the show. Second was at Wembley, where yet again he smashed it, and too bring out dre was unbelievable and the crowd went insane, personally thought, u are not topping that.... but now to twickenham, where I didn’t think he could possibly get any better or fulfill his thousands and thousands of fans, but how stupid was I haha, not only delivers the best show/concert I’ve ever been to and seen but upped the anti and performs the best I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen a few acts, not to finish there, but brings out not just 50 cent but ed sheeran also and the crowd just goes insane and lifted the roof off....

By far the best performer/performance I’ve been luckily enough to witness

I FINALLY got to see Eminem live after being a fan since day one. What can I say that will do the performance justice? He was AMAZING! Everything that I ever imagined in my mind an Eminem concert would be, well it was 10 times better than that. He was on point with his flow, the sound was awesome, the stage design was great too but honestly I didn't even pay that much attention to that because I was focusing on him the entire time. It was a long time coming for me to see him live and man did he exceed my expectations. Few shows have ever hit that top mark for me and wow he did it. There really are no words that I can say that will give him the credit he deserves for being an amazing artist and performer. All I can say is if you get a chance to watch him, DO IT! You will not be disappointed. I can't wait to be able to watch him again!

Marshal a.k..a Eminem, you are the best music star ever! I listen to your music everyday becuase I love how you put your anger and pain into the words of your songs, "I'm Sorry Mama, I never meant to hurt you, I never meant to make you cry" is one of the best emotional phrases you have used even though you think you have hurt them they will always love you and make sure you are safe. I will always buy your albums when they are released and even try and come to one of your concerts, hopefully meaning I get to meet you and ask for a picture with you and ask you nicely to sign my albums and posters I have. You are my favourite singer of all time. I am your biggest fan ever!

From Curtis

P.S. You are the best, hopefully I get to meet you and that would be the best day of my life I would never forget it and never forget you!

Eminem is epic. Eminem live is mind blowing! Live he performs a great variety of songs from all of his albums, mixing in some of his old stuff which brings feelings of nostalgia with his newer stuff which sounds great. He has got to be one of the best rappers of all time and the fact that he writes all his lyrics himself gives the songs depth and meaning. He's a lyrical genius! Watching him live is a roller coaster of emotions from jumping up and down and going wild to swaying your hands in the air with a sing-a-long. Even though Wembley held thousands he still performed like it was to each and every one of you, interacting with the crowd and showing off his great sense of humor. Eminem is amazing and I would highly recommend seeing him live, there's no feeling like it.

Eminem enjoys unlikely chart boost after 22 years thanks to bumbling politician’s General Election campaign

Eminem ’s hit single Without Me reappeared in the UK top 40 last week after Nigel Farage made it his Reform UK campaign anthem.

Without Me peaked at number one in the charts when it first came out in 2002.

Now 22 years later it has made another resurgence after Reform UK leader and notorious Brexiteer Nigel, 60, used the tune to play himself onto stage at a rally in Blackpool .

In the clip, the controversial figurehead is seen slightly off-beat clapping and shaking hands with members of the cheering crowd. He then awkwardly starts speaking the well-known lyrics ‘Guess who’s back, back again.’ while pointing to the audience.

Although he doesn’t make a specific reference to Eminem, the musical introduction was enough to push the comeback song to number 37 in the Official Singles Chart from the week of June 14 to June 20.

Ironically, the American rapper also topped the charts the same week with his latest single Houdini.

Nigel Farage in front of a crowd in Blackpool

The 600-strong crowd listened to Nigel’s speech at the Imperial Hotel in Blackpool where he discussed the recent betting allegations within the Conservative Party .

The British politician’s return to UK politics is just as much of a surprise as the Eminem hit implies. Just last month the populist ruled out a return as leader of right-wing political party Reform UK before making a drastic U-turn .

He launched his campaign at the beginning of June to be elected MP of Clacton-on-Sea during the July 4 General Election .

The former Ukip leader was at the forefront of the successful Brexit campaign in 2016 and has been criticised for his divisive views throughout his career.

Most recently, Succession star Brian Cox said that he found him ‘slightly fascist ’ while on live TV.

Nigel Farage in I'm A Celeb

Last year, Nigel joined the lineup for I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here where he finished in third place after public voting.

His Eminem soundtrack is not the only chaotic musical moment the general public has been subject to since the upcoming election was called.

During Prime Minister Rishi Sunak ’s speech in May the sound of Tony Blair’s 1997 election anthem Things Can Only Get Better drowned him out , leaving many people amused.

Current polls predict a comfortable victory for Keir Starmer’s Labour party .

The jury is still out on whether Reform UK, previously helmed byRichard Tice, will secure any seats. In March 2024 former Conservative MP Lee Anderson defected to Reform UK.

Kendrick Lamar made hip-hop history by using his Juneteenth show as a victory lap against Drake and an attempt to unite the West Coast

  • Kendrick Lamar performed his first show since his beef with Drake on Wednesday.
  • Lamar performed most of his diss tracks aimed at Drake, including "Not Like Us" five times.
  • But fans say the event attended by major hip-hop figures and LA gang members was more than a victory lap from Lamar.

Insider Today

Kendrick Lamar cemented his win in his rap beef with Drake at an LA show on Wednesday where he performed a diss track five times, surrounded by rap legends.

But the Juneteenth concert wasn't just a victory lap, with fans viewing it as an iconic moment in hip-hop history and an important attempt to unite the fractured West Coast .

The sold-out, one-off show, "The Pop Out: Ken & Friends" — which was streamed live on Amazon Prime Video and Twitch — was Lamar's hotly anticipated first performance since his beef with Drake unfolded earlier this year.

After the pair released a series of back-to-back diss tracks in April and May, Lamar was viewed as the winner after "Not Like Us" topped the Billboard Hot 100 charts for one week in May and has been in the top 10 ever since. Drake's response, "The Heart Part 6" wasn't enough to beat Lamar.

When both artists went quiet, fans were left wondering what would happen next.

Lamar didn't disappoint with "The Pop Out," where he performed four of his five Drake diss tracks, opening with "Euphoria." Later came his diss verses on "6:16" and "Like That," and he ended the night with "Not Like Us," featuring an intro from West Coast hip-hop legend Dr Dre , who joined him on stage.

Lamar then performed "Not Like Us" four more times alongside numerous West Coast rappers, athletes, dancers, and members from multiple Los Angeles gangs. At the end, they took a group photo together.

Related stories

Fans said the concert was the equivalent of Lamar getting the West Coast to dance on Drake's grave, and proof that the hip-hop community supports him.

Kendrick doing this on the heels of killin Drake knowing the whole world would tune into him doing a victory lap on his grave, just to have the first hour be local rappers and Tommy the Clown and his next generation of dancers for 20 minutes is fucking hilarious and AMAZING — Big Boss 🇵🇸 (@LordBalvin) June 20, 2024
Drake really pissed KDot off so bad he formed the Rap Coalition of Hate, they did a dance circle on his grave, and took a family photo like 😘✌🏽 pic.twitter.com/elcJmQMok4 — Riana Manuel-Peña 💜 (@RianaTweetsNow) June 20, 2024

But they also appreciated the cultural significance of the show, with one X user describing it as " one of the most historic nights in hip-hop history ."

While fans have focused a lot on the unsubstantiated allegations of sexual assault, pedophilia, and domestic abuse in the pair's diss tracks, the battle was truly about authenticity.

In "Not Like Us," Lamar calls Drake, who is Canadian, a "colonizer" of rap culture, claiming he stole his persona from artists like Future , Lil Baby, 21 Savage, Young Thug, Quavo, and 2Chainz.

In "Family Matters" and "Push Ups," Drake calls Lamar, who raps about race and societal issues , a fake activist and says his hometown, Compton, California, doesn't support him.

Lamar challenged that idea by showcasing up-and-coming West Coast rappers and performing with major Californian hip-hop stars including Tyler The Creator, Jay Rock, Ab-Soul, Schoolboy Q, and Dr. Dre, while the crowd was filled with stars including LeBron James .

Lamar didn't just bring all of these artists together to mock Drake, though, but to unite the West Coast.

"For all of us to be on this stage together, unity, from East side mother-fucking LA, Crips, Bloods, Pirus, this shit is special, man. We put this shit together just for ya'll," Lamar said in between the "Not Like Us" encores, referring to rival gang members onstage.

"This shit ain't got nothing to do with no song at this point, ain't got nothing to do with no back and forth records, it's got everything to do with this moment right here. That's what this shit was about, to bring all of us to-mother-fucking-gether," he added.

Lamar also paid tribute to late rapper Nipsey Hussle , former NBA star Kobe Bryant , and Californians who have lost their lives to violence.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Tom Cruise was all smiles at Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour show in London Saturday night the day after daughter Suri’s high school graduation in NYC just hours prior.

The “Top Gun” star looked gleeful at Wembley Stadium as he traded friendship bracelets with fans ahead of the singer’s second of three sold-out performances in England’s capital city.

The 61-year-old actor — who rocked dark wash jeans, a white T-shirt and a black jacket — sat among A-list attendees including Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher, Hugh Grant and “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig.

Cruise appeared to be having the time of his life as he — much like Prince William the night prior — danced along to the Grammy winner’s hit song “Shake it Off” with his famous peers in the VIP tent.

Swift’s beau, Travis Kelce, was also among stars as he attended his second London concert in a row with his brother and sister-in-law, Jason and Kylie .

Meanwhile in the US, Cruise’s estranged 18-year-old daughter graduated from LaGuardia High School the day prior.

A beaming Suri was photographed greeting friends outside the venue shortly after they received their diplomas.

She also eagerly took pictures with mom Katie Holmes, who proudly stood by her daughter’s side on the special day.

The teenager dressed for the heat in a white sundress and heels adorned with a flower.

She completed her summery ensemble with a red graduation robe and white sash.

The 45-year-old “Dawson’s Creek” alum, for her part, looked cheerful in beige pleated trousers and a matching collared shirt.

Cruise’s choice to opt out of the graduation does not come as a surprise, as he has been estranged from the teen for years .

Suri even dropped the “Risky Business” actor’s last name in her school’s official graduation pamphlet, opting instead to go by her first and middle names, “Suri Noelle.”

Cruise confirmed in a 2012 deposition that Holmes divorced him “in part to protect Suri from Scientology.”

Followers of the controversial religion are not allowed to associate with nonbelievers.

Suri — who revealed she will attend Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh in the fall — did not let her father’s absence ruin her final days of high school.

Earlier this week, she was seen having a blast with her friends as they took pictures before they went off to prom.

Suri looked like a spitting image of her mother in a ’90s-inspired floral gown that featured a corseted bodice.

Holmes and Cruise split in 2011 nearly six years after tying the knot.

The “Mission Impossible” actor shares daughter Isabella, 31, and son Connor, 29, with ex-wife Nicole Kidman, whom he separated from in 2001 following an 11-year marriage.

Cruise still spends time with his eldest children as they have followed in his Scientology-practicing footsteps.

Nursing students study and take notes at a table with a computer and notebooks

EAST GREENSBORO, N.C. (June 25, 2024) – North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and its Center of Excellence for Integrative Health Disparities and Equity Research (CIHDER) will host the All of Us HBCU (historically Black college or university) Road Tour on Saturday, June 29.

The event will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Room 107 of Frye Hall (formerly the Academic Classroom Building), 1601 E. Market St., Greensboro. Lunch will be provided during this free, public event, but registration is required and seats are limited. Register online at https://tinyurl.com/yc8jrxtd .

The theme is “From Data to Equity: Telling the Story of North Carolina HBCUs Using the All of Us Dataset to Address Health Disparities.” Presentation and discussion topics will be aligned with the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH’s) All of Us Research Program and its Researcher Workbench; how HBCU students and faculty are using the workbench to address health disparities; and what CIHDER is doing to build sustainable and trusted relationships between minority communities and researchers to advance health equity.

Moderators and speakers are Angelo Moore, PH.D., RN, CIHDER executive director; Kristen Rhinehardt, Ph.D., assistant computational science and engineering professor in the N.C. A&T College of Engineering; Dorothy C. Browne, Ph.D., Shaw University senior research scientist; and Al Richmond, MSW, Community-Campus Partnerships for Health (CCPH) executive director.

The event also will feature an interactive panel of researchers from other North Carolina HBCUs as well as a community representative. It will conclude with roundtable engagement with HBCU researchers and community members.

“This is a great opportunity for HBCUs and community members to learn from each other and engage in meaningful conversations and develop solutions that advance health equity,” said Moore. “HBCUs are uniquely positioned in their approach and trust earned from their perspective communities.”

The HBCU Road Tour highlights how HBCUs are using the All of Us dataset for research and community engagement to address health disparities. It also celebrates HBCUs as knowledge-building hubs and to supports faculty and students in their research careers.

CCPH, a nonprofit whose mission is to promote health equity and social justice through partnerships between communities and academic institutions, has teamed with CIHDER to add a new component to the HBCU Road Tour stop at A&T: Incorporating the voices and contributions of minority communities in the Greensboro area, recognizing the important role they play in addressing health disparities.

Host HBCUs are institutions with Institutional Champions who have received grants from the All of Us Researcher Academy. A&T faculty included in the initial cohort of Institutional Champions for the  All of Us Researcher Academy are Rhinehardt and Yvonne Ford, Ph.D., assistant professor in the School of Nursing housed in the John R. and Kathy R. Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences.

RTI International, a nonprofit research institute, received a five-year award from NIH to participate in a national consortium of organizations supporting the All of Us Research Program in 2020. Two years later, RTI selected N.C. A&T and five HBCUs following a public call for nominations to provide training, technical assistance and peer-to-peer learning for health researchers at Minority Serving Institutions with support from NIH.

CCPH, in collaboration with RTI, is part of the NIH effort to collaborate with HBCUs to encourage use of the dataset. HBCUs have been a primary training ground for researchers of color and have done groundbreaking research on and about minority communities, but often receive less funding and attention.

The All of Us Research Program is building one of the largest biomedical data resources of its kind with health data from a diverse group of participants across the United States, including people and communities who have been underrepresented in biomedical and health-related research in the past. Data include biological factors and social determinants of health on a large, inclusive scale that tracks participants as they move, age and grow. This diverse database, which is a part of the  Precision Medicine Initiative , is intended to inform studies on a multitude of heath conditions.

Simultaneously, the NIH is bringing this data together on a single platform, the All of Us Researcher Workbench. The workbench is being made available to diverse researchers across a wide range of settings — particularly those who come from or live within the underrepresented communities that bear a disproportionate burden of disease, and from institutions like HBCUs whose researchers are underrepresented in biomedical research.

CIHDER, housed in the Hairston College, also is hosting the “Building a Better You” community wellness fair the Cone Health Center for Health Equity on Saturday, June 29, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. All of Us HBCU Road Tour attendees are invited to participate in the fair, as well.

Guido Migliozzi wins KLM Open in 3-man playoff

Guido Migliozzi made three birdies on the 18th hole at the KLM Open

AMSTERDAM — Guido Migliozzi of Italy holed a 7-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th and then birdied it twice more in extra holes to win the KLM Open in a three-man playoff on Sunday.

Migliozzi birdied two of his last three holes for a 1-under 70, joining Marcus Kinhult of Sweden and Joe Dean of England, who earlier birdied the 18th and each posted a 68.

All three players birdied the 18th in the first playoff hole, but the Italian was the only player who managed birdie on the second extra hole, two-putting from about 60 feet for his first European tour victory in nearly two years.

He now has four European tour victories.

Migliozzi and Dean earned the two spots available for the British Open next month at Royal Troon through the Open Qualifying Series. Dean earned the exemption over Kinhult based on a better world ranking.

Dean shot 30 on the back nine of The International and was the first to post at 11-under 273. Kinhult birdied the 16th and 17th holes to reach 11 under, only to find a bunker right of the green. He blasted out only to 55 feet and had to make a 6-foot par to catch Dean.

Rasmus Hojgaard of Denmark needed eagle on the last to join the playoff, but he missed from just over 50 feet and closed with a 70 to tie for fourth with Andrea Pavan of France (65).

Mikko Korhonen of Finland, the 54-hole leader, shot 75 and tied for eighth.
