The clubs and equipment that powered Matt Wallace to first DP World Tour title win in five years

Matt Wallace used a mixed but fairly straightforward bag to claim his first DP World Tour title in five years when he won the Omega European Masters in Switzerland.

Wallace uses the Ping G430 LST driver – the 10.5˚ model helping him finish 12th for Strokes Gained: Off The Tee and eighth for Driving Accuracy across the four rounds in the Alps. He had used a Titleist TSR3 driver during his 2023 season.

When it comes to his fairway woods, he uses a 16.5˚ TaylorMade Qi10 Tour.

The 34-year-old uses a Titleist TSR2 at 18˚ of loft for his only hybrid in the bag. He had switched his Titleist T200 utility iron (2) for the 18 degree Titleist TSR2 hybrid earlier this term.

Wallace also uses the full set of 2021 Callaway X Forged CB irons, from four through to nine – these have remained the same since he first put them in at the 2022 KLM Open. He does not use a 3-iron at all.

Like many other players on the Pro tours including British Masters winner Niklas NĂžrgaard, he banks on the Titleist Vokey SM10’s for his wedges, with 46, 50 and 54 degrees of loft and the SM10-WW Proto at 60˚.

He completes his bag with a Titleist Scotty Cameron Tour Only T-9 putter, from their 2024 range.

Wallace uses a 2023 Titleist Pro V1 X ball.

“I’m a low spin player so I’m always trying to gain as much spin as possible,” Wallace said of the ball.

“We play on firm greens over here on the PGA Tour. It’s really important that my spin numbers don’t drop too low. I play Pro V1x because it gave me, the launch, the spin, the control, a bit more distance off the tee as well, without losing the finesse and precision around the greens.”

Victory in Switzerland gave him an early lead in the fight to join Luke Donald’s Ryder Cup squad in Bethpage, which he claims has inspired him to set new goals.

“I needed something like the change in the Ryder Cup points list to really give me a focus,” he said.

“Every single week now is, hopefully, going to be like this week.”

2023 DP World Tour Championship: Matt Wallace sits ahead of Tommy Fleetwood, Viktor Hovland after Round 3

The englishman's back nine changed the entire complexion of this championship.

matt-wallace-dpwt-championship-round-2-2023-g.jpg

Matt Wallace's day at Jumeriah Estates began like most others. A handful of birdies on the front side of the Earth Course saw the Englishman turn in 33 before entering a zone few have rarely seen. Making birdie on every hole of his back nine, Wallace signed for a 12-under 60 to turn a seven-stroke deficit into a one-stroke lead heading into the final round of the 2023 DP World Tour Championship. Standing at 16 under, Wallace will have to contend with some of the heaviest hitters in the game over the final 18 as Viktor Hovland and Tommy Fleetwood make up his closest pursuers.

Wallace's 12 birdies in a round, nine birdies in a row, nine-hole score in relation to par (-9) and in sum (27) matched DP World Tour records. His third shot from the greenside bunker on the par-5 18th, his 59th stroke of the day, settled two feet from the pin. Since preferred lies were in place, Wallace's accolades will technically not earn a place in European history books.

"What a day, an amazing day," Wallace said. "I just tried my hardest to get myself back into the tournament. I'm really happy that I've been able to do that. Played great. At the end, I didn't even think there was a 59. Honestly I think it helped me a little bit. I just played nicely coming down the stretch, just keep getting one more if I could and I managed to do that.

"Kind of gutted now actually a little bit. Great opportunity to do it. I've done it at Moorpark on the West Course, which is only a par 68, but to do it out there would have been really special today. Ball in hand helps. I had a couple good lies for up-and-down, but it was fantastic and a good effort for 59."

Wallace will now be tasked with one of the most difficult prospects in professional golf: following up a great round with another. Surging to the top of the leaderboard, Wallace finds himself in the final pair of Sunday's action alongside Fleetwood, who had a heater of his own early Saturday.

Carding five birdies in his first seven holes, Fleetwood grabbed a share of the lead before hitting some turbulence during the middle portion of his round. This unsteadiness turned into jubilation when Fleetwood's eagle bid from outside 50 feet on the par-5 14th found the bottom of the cup. A birdie soon followed, but a three-putt bogey on 17 and a mess of a par on the finisher saw Fleetwood finish his day with his second straight 66 to put him at 15 under.

"I'm very happy with the fact that you get to the final day of the year and I'm still playing well, still feel fresh and I'm still motivated and in contention," said Fleetwood. "I take a lot of pleasure out of that. I think it's easy to shut off when you get so far down the season, but I kind of pride myself on going all the way.

"We'll see tomorrow. It was great today. Out there playing with one of the best golfers in the world and trying to go toe-to-toe with Viktor. Just look forward to more of it tomorrow. It's been great so far."

Fleetwood's score was matched by Hovland, who has been in lockstep with his Ryder Cup teammate the first three days with rounds of 69-66-66. The FedEx Cup champion looks to become the first player since Henrik Stenson in 2013 to win the final event of the season in both the United States and Europe.

"It's been a crazy year," said Hovland. "It kind of feels like it has been the off-season. I have had six weeks off. This is another big one and would be really nice to have on the resumé and I feel like I'm playing some good golf. I gave myself a lot of looks. Didn't necessarily feel like I made a lot of putts. It was very close to the edges but it was very solid so hopefully tomorrow they drop in."

Matt Wallace birdies every hole on back nine to tie DP World Tour record, leads DP World Tour Championship

Change Text Size

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Matt Wallace of England made a 30-foot birdie putt on the 10th hole and didn’t stop until he birdied the rest of them, tying a DP World Tour best with nine birdies in a row for a 12-under 60 that shot him into the lead Saturday in the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

“That was fun,” Wallace said as he walked off the 18th green on the Earth course at Jumeirah Golf Estates.

Even better was the 54-hole lead when Tommy Fleetwood, Viktor Hovland and 36-hole leader Nicolai Hojgaard couldn’t catch him.

Wallace hit the ball so purely down the stretch that his final six birdie putts covered a total of 15 feet, 8 inches (nearly 5 meters). He finished at 16-under 200 and led by one shot over Fleetwood and Hovland, who each had a 66.

“An amazing day. Just tried my hardest to get myself back into the tournament,” said Wallace, who started the day seven shots behind. “I’m really happy that I’ve been able to do that.”

Fleetwood got off to a hot start with five birdies in seven holes, slowed in the middle, and then came to life with a 60-foot eagle putt on the par-5 14th. He was tied with Wallace after a birdie on the 16th, only to three-putt for bogey on the par-3 17th and muff a wedge from thick rough that kept him from a good birdie chance on the par-5 closing hole.

Hovland played bogey-free, though he failed to birdie the par 5s on the back nine with poor tee shots. Even so, the Norwegian star was in position to capture the season-ending titles on the PGA TOUR and the DP World Tour.

“It would be really cool,” Hovland said. “It’s been a crazy year. It feels like it has been an offseason — six weeks off — but this is another big one. It would be a nice to have on the resume.”

Masters champion Jon Rahm, a three-time winner of this season-ending event, hit a fairway metal from out of the trees, over the water and onto the 18th green to set up a birdie and a 67, leaving him five shots behind and still in the mix.

Rory McIlroy also had a 67, but he was eight shots back.

Hovland said the grain in the rain-softened greens made it tricky to hole putts. Then he was told of Wallace posting a 60 and he laughed.

“That’s ridiculous,” Hovland said.

The DP World Tour record is nine consecutive birdies by James Nitties of Australia in the 2019 Vic Open, and 12 birdies for a round by Raphaël Jacquelin in the 2013 Turkish Open. Wallace matched both those marks, but it will not be listed as an official record because of preferred lies due to the turf softened by overnight rain.

Bernd Wiesberger also had nine straight birdies in the Maybank Championship in Malaysia in 2017, also with preferred lies.

Wallace was no less amazing, particularly how close he kept hitting it. He began the back nine with a 30-foot birdie putt, followed with one from 18 feet and the rest of the way he only had two birdie putts from the 6-foot range. The rest were 3 feet or closer.

He had a chance at only the second 59 in DP World Tour history. Wallace was 202 yards away in the fairway on the par-5 18th, but fanned his long iron into a bunker. He blasted out to inches away for one last birdie.

“I didn’t even think there was a 59,” Wallace said. “Honestly, I think it helped me a little bit. I just played nicely coming down the stretch, just keep getting one more if I could and I managed to do that.”

Hojgaard, meanwhile, was in control for so much of the round until he let it get away in the end. The 22-year-old Dane hit into the trees on the par-5 14th and had to make a 7-foot par putt on the second-easiest hole on the back nine.

He found a bunker on the island-green 17th and made bogey, then hit his approach into the creek on the 18th and closed with a bogey. That gave him a 70 and left him three shots behind.

His twin brother, Rasmus Hojgaard, had a 65 and was a further two shots behind. Rasmus was in position to earn one of 10 spots on the PGA TOUR next year.

Olympic silver medallist Tommy Fleetwood is set to chase more glory in the 2024 Race to Dubai as he competes in the DP World Tour Championship from November 14-17.

Fleetwood will join four-time Major champion Rory McIlroy at the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates for the season-ending Rolex Series event.

A Dubai resident, the world number 11 has enjoyed significant success in the UAE, with three of his seven DP World Tour titles coming in the region. He claimed back-to-back wins at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in 2017 and 2018, won the season-long Race to Dubai in 2017, and added another triumph this year at the inaugural Dubai Invitational.

Recently, Fleetwood earned the silver medal for Great Britain at the Paris Olympics, standing on the podium alongside world number one Scottie Scheffler and Major winner Hideki Matsuyama at Le Golf National—the venue of his Ryder Cup debut in 2018.

He will spend two weeks in the UAE following confirmation he will tee it up at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship - the first event of the DP World Tour Play-offs, a new two event series also incorporating the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

The top 70 available players at the conclusion of the “Back 9” events will gather at Yas Links in Abu Dhabi before the top 50 available players move on to Dubai, as the new-look season comes to a dramatic close, and fans are able to buy tickets to all four days of action here.

"It's always a privilege to be part of the DP World Tour Championship, especially on a course as iconic as the Earth Course,” said Fleetwood, a seven-time DP World Tour winner. “The Race to Dubai has played a huge role in my career, and I’m excited to be back competing in the DP World Tour Play-offs.

“The UAE has been like a second home to me, and I’ve been fortunate to experience some great moments here - winning in Abu Dhabi twice and lifting the Race to Dubai trophy in 2017 were incredible milestones. It’s a place that always inspires me to play my best golf."

Fleetwood and DP World officially opened The DP World Golf Performance Centre at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai in 2022, the region’s first-ever Tommy Fleetwood Academy, and he remains committed to growing grassroots golf in the region and globally.

"Being named a DP World Global Ambassador is a real honour. I’m proud to represent such an important partner of the Tour I grew up watching and to help grow the game globally with my Academy. The partnership feels like a perfect fit for me, especially with all the success I’ve had in Dubai and the UAE.”

Following record weekend crowds last year, free general admission tickets for Thursday and Friday are now available at dpwtc.com.

The DP World Tour Championship offers a fantastic day out for all, combining world-class golf with an array of exciting activities and experiences. The vibrant village ensures an incredible atmosphere, featuring dedicated activations for children, free golf lessons for all ages, Ladies Day celebrations, trick-shot shows, large screens for enhanced viewing, and engaging sports activations.

Amputee golfer Mike Browne paid tribute to golf and how it saved his life after his victory at the G4D Tour's season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.

The Englishman won his first G4D [Golf for the Disabled Tour] title back in Ireland last year and sealed his second with a three-stroke victory in Dubai on Saturday, scoring a one-under 71 to finish ahead of world No 1 Kipp Popert.

Reflecting upon his achievement, he said: "It was nice, it was a good feeling to finally be able to say that you've got to chase me now, instead of us chasing him (Popert). It was really special for me."

Browne suffered a leg break back in 2011 while training for the Royal Artillery Unit. The injury was unable to heal, which led to a rare infection and saw him needing to have his leg amputated two years later. The G4D winner took time to reflect on his story and the importance of golf to help him at a difficult time.

"I lost my leg at the end of 2013 and then took up golf in 2014, it was a rough time and I wasn't in a good place physically or mentally," Browne explained. "I found a charity called the On Course Foundation, I think I just had another operation and they were in at the recovery centre.

"I saw a poster on the wall and I went and had a go and fell in love with it. That moment saved my life and that's what golf was good for. "

The technological influence on Browne's career

The technological advancement of leg prosthetics over the years allowed Browne to participate at the highest level of golf, with the Englishman's journey and experience using prosthetics changing during that period.

How important is the G4D Tour?

Since taking up golf, Browne became professional and the G4D gave him - and other golfers with a disability - the chance to play at the some of the world's best courses.

"No doubt I don't know where I would be without golf," Browne explained. "I wasn't in a good place, but it has allowed me to have a platform to travel the world and live my best life.

"I'm so blessed to do what I do and meet people I do through the GD4 and other tours as well, it's just amazing. You are sharing the course with the greats of modern times so I feel very privileged and lucky to get this chance. Thank you to everyone who has got me to this point."

DP World Tour deny golfer's claim over investigation into angry outburst

The DP World Tour have refuted Eddie Pepperell's claim that a golfer deliberately caused damage to one green at the Omega European Masters.

dp world tour one legged golfer

The DP World Tour have denied one of the greens was damaged by an angry golfer during the final round of the Omega European Masters .

English pro Eddie Pepperell claimed an investigation was underway after he noticed a 'hefty' chunk of turf was removed and repaired near the pin on the 15th hole.

Pepperell made the claim in the most recent episode of the Chipping Forecast .

The English golfer, 33, finished in a tie for 39th in Switzerland after putting together rounds of 66-67-77-70.

Pepperell said he noticed damage near the pin on the 15th hole at Crans-sur-Sierre club.

He said efforts were ongoing to determine which player caused the damage.

The culprit will be in trouble if they get found out, he said.

Pepperell told the pod : "This is potentially a bit of Tour gossip.

"Andrew [Cotter, co-host] will definitely appreciate this given the angry man that he is on the golf course.

"On Sunday, I got to the 15th green, we got to the 15th green and somebody - I think the investigation is still ongoing - had taken a hefty chunk out of the green about two foot from the hole and repaired it.

"But it was very noticeable and bad. Whoever has done it, if they get found out, they are in trouble.

"So that's a bit of gossip there. I'm not sure I should be saying that but hey, it's not like me to be saying things I shouldn't in this podcast."

Asked if there were 'known suspects', Pepperell said he wasn't sure.

"I don't now," he said. "It happened before me so they've got two hours' worth of groups to look at so I think the investigation is ongoing."

The DP World Tour told us they looked into what happened on the 15th green.

But it was accidental damage.

A spokesperson said: "It was reported but when the team looked into what had happened, it was actually accidental damage and, as is alluded to on the Chipping Forecast , efforts were made to repair it."

The DP World Tour do impose punishments and fines for damaging greens, but the total amount varies depending on each specific incident.

"It was borderline unplayable"

Matt Wallace triumphed in Switzerland, capturing his first win in six years.

He is now targeting automatic qualification for the 2025 European Ryder Cup team.

Wallace somehow managed to hold onto a four-shot lead after 54 holes despite gusting winds of 35mph and ridiculously fast greens that were running at 12 on the stimpmeter.

Jordan Smith was in the field and later blasted the tournament officials , saying some of the pin placements were 'ridiculous' given the conditions.

Pepperell also agreed they got the course set-up 'completely wrong'.

Plus the forecast was out at 6am with the first tee time being 7:30/45 so had time to change them! https://t.co/PwCBZe7RAM — Jordan Smith (@Jsmithgolf) September 7, 2024

"The wind that came was totally unexpected," he said.

"The greens were unbelievably fast as it was, slopy, firm and it was borderline unplayable on some greens I would say.

"And I'm not one to be overly hyperbolic about this type of stuff and I'm not one to complain generally [but] I think the players had the right to complain somewhat and I know the tournament director got it in the ear and probably rightly so.

"They didn't know it was coming [the wind] and that's fine but it made a bit of a mockery at times of the players that were in contention and I'm not speaking of myself necessarily.

"I saw players in front of me and I saw my playing partner, indeed, putt it into the water hazard on 12.

"You know, you're making very good players look very silly and I'm not sure that's exactly what the goal is for the DP World Tour.

"But nonetheless, it was an enjoyable week and obviously fantastic place and I enjoyed it overall."

Former LIV Golfer in for 'one of the hardest tests till date' at the Irish Open 2024

B ernd Wiesberger is gearing up for the 2024 Amgen Irish Open. The tournament will be held from Thursday, September 12 to 15 at Royal County Down Golf Club in Newcastle, Down.

Wiesberger is looking for redemption after his return from LIV Golf earlier this year. The 38-year-old was among the original players who joined the Saudi breakaway Tour in 2022. He returned to the DP World Tour after registering only a single top-10 finish this year. Wiesberger finished 35th in 2022 and 41st in 2023.

Before the Amgen Irish Open, the Austrian player took to X and wrote:

"Walked all 18 holes at RCD (Royal County Down) this morning and then played 9 holes ProAm in the afternoon. This place is pure and with high winds like today we're in for one of the hardest tests to date. Should be an amazing week @IrishOpen_"

Since his return from LIV Golf, Bernd Wiesberger player has been seeking a revival on the European Tour, where he has had eight wins. The Austrian's last victory came in 2021 Made in HimmerLand. In an Instagram story, he wrote:

"Looking for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow here at Royal County Down."

Wiesberger retained his DP World Tour card despite the Tour's legal victory against LIV golfers. LIV Golf paid a record $1.9 million fine to ease his return to the tour.

Wiesberger left the Tour as a top-100 player in the OWGR rankings, this year he has climbed from 563rd to 188th, though he hasn't regained his previous ranking.

A look at former LIV Golfer Bernd Wiesberger's performance in 2024

Bernd Wiesberger has had a decent 2024 season. In 16 starts on the DP World Tour, he has had three top-10 finishes and 12 top-25 finishes. He is currently ranked No.36 in the Race to Dubai rankings.

The former LIV Golfer's best performances include a T2 at the European Open, a T7 at the KLM Open and a T6 finish at the D+D REAL Czech Masters. His other notable finishes include a 16th finish at the BMW International Open and a T16 finish at both the Bahrain Championship and Porsche Singapore Classic.

Rory McIlroy might be headlining the field for this week’s Amgen Irish Open, but he’s not the only headline.

For the first time since 2015, Royal County Down, considered one of the best golf courses in the world, will host a DP World Tour event. This will mark just the fourth time that the Newcastle, Northern Ireland layout will host the Irish Open, doing so in 1928, 1935 and 2015. It also has hosted several notable amateur championships, including the 2007 Walker Cup, which featured several future major winners and PGA Tour standouts, including McIlroy, Dustin Johnson and Webb Simpson.

Royal County Down checks in at No. 1 on Golf Digest’s most recent World’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses list. It’s also first on Golfweek’s Best International Courses for 2024 and sixth on Golf.com’s Top 100 Courses in the World for 2023-24.

‱ GOLFPASS: Is Royal County Down or Royal Portrush better?

Joining McIlroy in this week’s field are Shane Lowry, Bob MacIntyre, Nicolai Hojgaard and Tom McKibbin, the 21-year-old who grew up on the same course as McIlroy, Holywood Golf Club outside of Belfast.

DP World Tour contender decries ‘ridiculous’ pins at Omega European Masters

Jordan Smith was not happy about the course setup in Switzerland on Saturday.

Getty Images

Conditions were so difficult at the DP World Tour’s Omega European Masters at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club in Switzerland on Saturday that one contender took to X (formerly Twitter) to sound off.

Englishman Jordan Smith, who at one point climbed to within one shot of leader Matt Wallace early on Saturday, ultimately fired a third-round 77 (seven over par) after a brutal back nine that included three bogeys, a double, and a quadruple-bogey 8 on the par-4 12th hole.

After the round, Smith vented on social media.

Plus the forecast was out at 6am with the first tee time being 7:30/45 so had time to change them! https://t.co/PwCBZe7RAM — Jordan Smith (@Jsmithgolf) September 7, 2024

“A day to forget but a day for the @DPWorldTour refs to forget,” Smith wrote. “The quickest these greens have ever been by far but they still decide to use the same pins as old plus with high winds today. Even with the perfect conditions yesterday a few of the pins were ridiculous.”

Then, a few minutes later, Smith added: “Plus the forecast was out at 6am with the first tee time being 7:30/45 so had time to change them!”

Winds of 35 mph caused scores to balloon on Saturday, resulting in a field scoring average of 74.16, almost five shots higher than it was in first two rounds, which averaged 69.83 and 69.81, respectively.

After a third-round 73, Matt Wallace led the field by four shots, and shared his thoughts about the course’s difficulty.

“Brutal, really hard,” Wallace said . “Felt I hit the ball just as good, in the right areas — they were the wrong areas by the looks of it.

dp world tour one legged golfer

The DP World Tour overhauled its schedule. 3 big questions remain

“Today wasn’t about really shooting under par,” he continued. “It was about keeping my lead and I did that and I will try and take the ego out of the three over, which I’m not happy about those type of scores but I probably left two or three shots out there which would have been an unbelievable score.”

According to Golf Channel analyst Jim Gallagher, Jr., Smith’s complaint was warranted .

“It’s a legit gripe, especially on the 12th hole,” Gallagher said on “Golf Central.” “They probably got caught thinking it wasn’t gonna blow as hard. But when you start putting balls off the green and going into penalty areas, it’s a little ridiculous. And we saw that, especially on the back nine. Some hole locations were iffy. You get greens that are as fast as they’ve been, wind blowing like that, it’s gonna get silly.”

After a final-round 67 on Sunday to reach five under overall, Smith ultimately finished T12 — six shots shy of Wallace’s winning score of 11 under. Wallace ended up claiming his fifth DP World Tour victory — and first DP World Tour win in six years — by defeating Spain’s Alfredo Garcia-Heredia with a birdie on the first playoff hole.

DP World Tour pro bounces back from quadruple bogey with hole-in-one on next hole, sums up golf perfectly

Golf is like a rollercoaster. Your friends guilt you into riding the ride, you reluctantly agree, you wait in line for awhile before being plunged from heady heights to bowel-wrenching lows, ending back where you started, wobbly legged and dehydrated, unable to tell up from down, elated from eviscerated. But don’t take our long-winded theme-park analogy at face value. Just ask DP World Tour pro Daniel Gavins, who bounced back from a brutal quadruple bogey at the Open de Espana on Thursday with an ace on the very next hole. Like we said, a rollercoaster.

RELATED: Adult entertainment club’s event forces Texas high school golf team to cancel practice

Talk about the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. Seconds after Gavins carded a likely weekend-killer eight holes into his tournament, he struck back with a good ol’ fashioned one, bringing him right back to even par for the day. That's pretty much the most disastrous score you’ll ever see a professional golfer card to the best that mathematics permits, all in the span of seconds. Somebody get Gavins a neckbrace, because he’s gotta have some serious whiplash right now.

RELATED: A Golf Twitter favorite is actually putting like Happy Gilmore in a PGA Tour event

Not that he’ll be that surprised. That’s just golf and he’s played plenty of it, you know, given his chosen occupation and all. If Gavins (and countless other pros like him) can’t roll with the punches and accept that there are no vindictive golf gods out to smite you, only a swirling vortex of chaos, then they’re in the wrong line of work. Or on the wrong ride. Or whatever. I don’t know. I can’t keep up with all these metaphors.

Royal County Down, Golfweek's No. 1 international course, a welcome site for Amgen Irish Open

Truly great courses and professional golf rarely collide, but this week is a welcome exception.

Royal County Down’s Championship Links, site of the Amgen Irish Open beginning Thursday on the DP World Tour, has a rare distinction: it’s one of only two courses to be ranked No. 1 on one of Golfweek’s Best premium rankings of courses to have hosted an upper-level men’s tour event in decades. The layout in Newcastle, Northern Ireland, ranks No. 1 on Golfweek’s Best list of courses outside the U.S.

Royal County Down originally was designed as a nine-hole layout by George L. Baillie in 1889. Nine more holes were laid down among the sandy dunes as designed by none other than Old Tom Morris over the following years. The course has evolved over the decades with contributions by George Combe, Harry Colt and Donald Steel, among others making suggestions.

Royal County Down has hosted a slew of top-level events including three previous Irish Opens, most recently in 2015. It also has been the site of various British Amateur Championships, Senior British Opens, a Curtis Cup, a Walker Cup, the British Ladies Amateur six times, and the European Ladies’ Team Championship.

How we rank courses

Not counting our wide-ranging state-by-state rankings of public and private courses, the only other No. 1 on one of our premium lists to host a top-tier event has been Pebble Beach Golf Links in California, site of  six U.S. Opens, one PGA Championship, one U.S. Women’s Open and multiple U.S. Amateurs and U.S. Women’s Amateurs. Also the annual host of the PGA Tour’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, the famed layout is No. 1 on Golfweek’s Best ranking of resort courses in the U.S.

By comparison, the private Cypress Point in California took over the No. 1 spot this year on Golfweek’s Best ranking of classic courses built before 1960 in the U.S., but the PGA Tour hasn’t been back since 1990. Before Cypress Point took over the top spot this year, Pine Valley in New Jersey had enjoyed a long run in the No. 1 spot, but that private stalwart never has hosted a PGA Tour event. That leaves Augusta National, ranked No. 3 among American classics and home to the Masters, as the highest-ranked classic course in the U.S. to have hosted a top-level men’s event in recent memory.

Among modern courses built since 1960 in the U.S., none of the top seven layouts have hosted a PGA Tour event. The Straits Course at Kohler’s Whistling Straits in Wisconsin, tied for No. 8 on that list, is the highest-ranked modern course to have welcomed top-level men’s events, including three PGA Championships, a U.S. Senior Open and a Ryder Cup.
