Even if you just eat out once in a while, this card offers 2% cash back on grocery store purchases and 1% cash back on all other expenditures.

Does my Visa card include travel insurance?

Yes, the travel insurance offered by Visa credit cards is rather decent. It covers all Visa credit card holders for rental car damage or theft. Some credit cards also cover travel-related accidents, trip cancellation, and lost luggage. Furthermore, Visa credit card travel insurance is always free. To be qualified for any coverage offered by your Visa card, you simply must pay for your vacation with it. However, the amount of coverage you receive, the claims procedures you must follow, and other details are determined by the bank or credit union that issues the card. It also matters if you have a Visa Platinum, Visa Signature, or Visa Infinite card (least coverage to most coverage).

  • Trip accident: If you or your dependents die or are permanently disfigured as a result of a travel provider’s negligence, this coverage will reimburse you or your family. The amount of money you can get varies, but with some cards, you may get up to $500,000. However, this feature will not be available on all cards.
  • Vacation cancellation/interruption/delay: If your trip is cut short or rescheduled due to circumstances beyond your control (such as death, accident, extreme weather, military orders, and so on), you may be paid for the inconvenience. The coverage may be up to $2,000 per trip, but it is not available on all credit cards.
  • It’s difficult to enjoy yourself on a trip if you don’t have any of your possessions with you. Visa may compensate you for the value of your luggage if it is lost or stolen. You could get up to $3,000 per person each trip, but the card you use will determine whether or not you are covered.
  • Rental car: Every Visa card, regardless of who issued it, should have this feature. You may be compensated if you rent a car using your Visa card and it is damaged or stolen. However, certain cars (such as luxury cars, RVs, motorcycles, and others) and situations are not eligible (like drunk driving). You may be eligible for up to the full rental vehicle value.

Does TD Visa Infinite travel insurance cover Covid?

Are COVID-19-related claims still covered if I’m already at my destination and a “Avoid all non-essential travel” or “Avoid all travel” warning is issued? Yes, you are eligible for TD Travel Medical Insurance coverage in this situation.

What is trip interruption reimbursement?

If your journey has already begun and you are forced to return home early due to an unexpected event, trip interruption insurance will reimburse you for the unused portion of your trip. When scheduling pricey holidays, this post-departure perk comes in handy.

Does my TD Visa cover rental car insurance?

You may be covered for some travel-related expenses (such as car rentals) and in certain scenarios, depending on the travel perks included with your TD credit card (i.e. medical emergencies).

The amount of time it takes depends on your age, the length of your vacation, and the sort of credit card you use.

In the event of a claim, you should contact our claims administrator to begin the process. It is beneficial to have all of your receipts on hand during this process.

Does TD Aeroplan have travel insurance?

Your baggage is also covered if it is lost by a Common Carrier. To cover the whole cost of the tickets, use your Card and/or Aeroplan miles, and each insured passenger is covered up to a total of $1,000 per trip.

Can I get travel insurance that covers Covid?

COVID-19 is currently covered by a limited number of travel insurers. If you test positive for COVID-19, it will most likely only cover medical, quarantine, and cancellation charges. However, if you are unable to travel due to lockdowns at home or at your intended destination, travel insurance is unlikely to cover cancellation.

Power of attorney nightmare..

I did everything they asked. Signed up at the bank as Power of Attorney, got an access card for my dad's accounts. They let me cancel the card and they waived the 25 dollar fee on a card that had zero balance and hadn't been used for years. I thought it was over. But my mom is still being billed 31 cents interest on the waived fee. When I called again they said that my access card they made me get was insufficient, but begrudgingly allowed me to speak to them about the card I'd already cancelled. They said there was no 31 cent charge even though it's on the bill from a few days ago. Mom is going to receive another bill saying she owes 0. I'll believe it when I see it.

They STINK!

Crappy customer service, have to wait on hold for over 25 minutes. I guess the bank doesn’t make enough money to hire people to answer the telephones in a timely manner. I had heard that TD Visa was the worst out there for customer service, and they are!

Just a generic credit card with no special features. I use it for daily purchases and pay off regularly to maintain a good credit rating. The interest rates could be better but improving my credit rating first will help my case. Have always been able to sort out issues like once my card was hacked online

Not happy as the company changed the type of credit card on me without speaking to me plus they have raised my limit without talking to me as well.

  • 1% cash back on all other eligible everyday purchases
  • Complimentary Concierge Services 24/7 Visa Infinite Dining Series Visa Infinite Music Series Wine Country Wonders Luxury Hotel Privileges
  • Comprehensive Travel Insurance & New Mobile Device Insurance coverage

I got it because it had the lowest interest rate around

I have had no negative experiences with the insurance on this card. Or any cash back as I do not have either option.

I really enjoy the lower interest rate on the card in lieu of actual rewards. Wish there was no annual fee though.

What is Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance and How Does it Work?

Why is trip cancellation coverage important?

The Trip Cancellation and Interruption plan provides coverage for eligible travel expenses in case your trip is interrupted or cancelled. It can be purchased separately or as part of a medical travel insurance plan. Let's dive into understanding the difference between trip cancellation and trip interruption.

What is the difference between trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance?

Sometimes, trip cancellation and trip interruption are used interchangeably but they do cover different aspects of your travel.

A trip cancellation plan provides coverage if your trip is cancelled for a covered reason before you depart for your trip. The benefits could include reimbursing you for the cost of non-refundable travel expenses, like trip deposits and flight change fees, if your trip is cancelled because of a covered cause.

On the other hand, a trip interruption plan provides coverage after you depart on your trip. The benefits could include paying for your trip home or to your next destination if your trip is interrupted because of a covered cause.

It is good to keep in mind that trip cancellation and interruption plan may not provide coverage for medical expenses you incur on your trip. So, you may want to purchase a travel medical plan if you are looking for travel medical coverage.

The benefits provided under these types of plans vary by insurer. Therefore, it is a good idea to review the plan details before you purchase.

Highlights:

  • How does a trip cancellation and interruption insurance plan help?

Why should I purchase a Trip Cancellation and Interruption insurance plan?

What is not covered by trip cancellation and interruption insurance.

  • Do I need to get travel medical insurance separately?

Who is eligible for buying trip cancellation and interruption insurance?

  • How much does trip cancellation and interruption cost?

Is trip cancellation and interruption insurance worth buying?

Applying for trip cancellation and interruption plan with td insurance, how does a trip cancellation and interruption plan help.

If you've faced any of the covered causes as mentioned in your policy, it would be advisable to report the incident as soon as possible to the insurer. Some policies may require you to report the cancellation or interruption within a specified time, therefore, it is best to review the policy documents to understand the reporting requirements.

The requirements for a claim are generally to submit the completed claims form along with any required documents and information. If you meet the conditions for a successful claim based on your coverage, you may be refunded or compensated for some of the financial losses you faced. The benefits, limitations and exclusions under a trip cancellation and interruption plan vary by policy and insurer. The best practice is to review the policy

This type of plan can reimburse you if your trip is cancelled or interrupted for a covered reason. Some examples of covered reasons could be:

  • Sickness, injury, death, or quarantine of a member of your travel party.
  • A delay that causes you to miss or interrupt any part of your covered trip due to weather, mechanical reasons, or travel advisory.
  • Loss or damage to your baggage and personal effects due to theft, burglary, fire, or transportation hazards.
  • Death or emergency hospitalization of your host at the destination.
  • Involuntary loss of permanent employment.

Every insurer has their own list of exclusions and limitations. Also, you should be aware that any benefit paid will be for eligible expenses and only up to the defined limit as per your policy. Here are some of the exclusions you could come across:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • Self-inflicted injuries
  • Getting involved in criminal activities
  • Labour disruptions or strikes
  • Giving birth to a child during your trip

While these are just a few of the exclusions you may find, it's best to check your insurance policy for a detailed list. Also, you can check with your travel insurance provider if you have questions.

Do I need to purchase travel medical insurance separately?

As we've discussed above, the trip cancellation and interruption plan doesn't include any benefits for travel medical expenses. A separate travel medical insurance plan can be purchased that could help cover costs for hospitalization or doctor's fees, ambulance services, diagnostic services, prescription drugs or even medical appliances. Several insurers provide a comprehensive bundle such as TD Insurance Multi-Trip All Inclusive Travel Insurance Plan 1 that includes medical and trip cancellation and trip interruption benefits in one plan.

No matter which insurer you choose, it's always a good idea to check your eligibility before you apply for the plan. Here are some eligibility requirements you may have to meet if you are applying trip cancellation and interruption insurance with TD Insurance:

  • You are a Canadian resident
  • You are covered by the government health insurance plan of your province or territory of residence during your trip and at the time a claim is incurred.
  • Minimum age requirement of 15 days old.
  • There are certain medical conditions that could make you ineligible for coverage under a selected plan.

Please read the policy or contact us for more details on eligibility.

How much does trip cancellation and interruption insurance cost?

There are several factors on which the cost of a trip cancellation and trip interruption plan may depend on. A few things that may determine the cost of such a policy are:

  • The total cost of your trip. This may include the cost of non-refundable purchases like flights, cruises and hotels or any other prepaid travel arrangement.
  • The amount of coverage you wish to purchase
  • The number of travelers who will require insurance coverage
  • Your age and the condition of your health
  • The duration of the trip

Whether you should purchase trip cancellation and interruption insurance depends on your personal circumstances. To determine whether you should purchase this type of insurance, you can consider the following:

  • You are travelling internationally or out of your province
  • You have multiple layovers as the more connecting flights you have, higher are the chances of facing a cancellation or interruption.
  • You are looking to cover the cost to repair or replace your baggage and personal effects due to loss or damage by reason of theft
  • You have little to no coverage through your employer provided travel plan or limited benefits with your travel credit card

You can apply for TD Insurance Trip Cancellation and Interruption Plan online 2 . We will let you know of your eligibility provide you with an estimate of how much the coverage might cost based on your response. If you're satisfied with the estimate, you could proceed to purchase.

While experience is a great teacher, it doesn't hurt to get a few tips along the way to help make an informed decision in case of trip cancellations and interruptions.

FAQs Related to Trip Cancellation and Interruption

Does trip cancellation and interruption insurance only cover the cost of cancelled flights.

The trip cancellation and interruption plan can reimburse you for more than just the cost of flights or other travel arrangements like a cruise. Such plans could also cover the cost of meals, accommodations, taxi transportations if your trip is cancelled or interrupted for a covered reason.

Different plans could have different benefits, it is important to read the policy carefully before purchasing.

Is it sufficient if my credit card provides Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption insurance?

The answer differs based on the type of traveler you are and the coverage that is associated with your credit card. If compared with a trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance policy provided by an insurance company, the one provided by a credit card may or may not fulfill your needs. While planning your next trip you should consider understanding the coverage on your credit card and if it is adequate to cover medical and/or non-medical situations.

Tyler Derksen

Review: TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card

The TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card is our pick for the best Aeroplan credit card for beginners and the best overall TD credit card .

This card offers a consistently high welcome bonus, meaningful Air Canada perks, strong insurance, and the ability to earn valuable Aeroplan points. The benefits that come with the card can easily justify the $139 annual fee.

That said, no credit card is perfect, and if you want a credit card with more perks or better earning rates, there are options that are stronger in these areas.

Let’s dive into the many reasons why the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card one of the best Aeroplan co-branded credit cards out there, and also where it doesn’t quite measure up.

In This Post

Strong welcome bonus, standard earning rates, flexible redemptions with aeroplan points, comprehensive insurance coverage, what else does the card offer, other cards to consider.

Over the past few years, the welcome bonus on the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card has fluctuated between 40,000 and 70,000 Aeroplan points.

You typically earn a portion of the welcome bonus immediately after making your first purchase, and then the next batch of points are earned after you meet a minimum spending requirement within the first 180 days (usually $6,000).

If you spend enough on your card within the first year, a final one-time anniversary bonus is awarded as part of most welcome bonuses these days, too.

The TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card may also come with a one-time annual fee rebate, depending on the offer.

does td emerald visa have travel insurance

  • Earn 10,000 Aeroplan points † upon first purchase †
  • Plus, earn 20 ,000 Aeroplan points † upon spending $6,000 in the first 180 days of account opening †
  • Plus, earn a one-time anniversary bonus of 20,000 Aeroplan points †  when you spend $10,000 within 12 months of account opening †
  • Earn 1.5x Aeroplan points † on eligible gas, groceries, and Air Canada ® purchases, including Air Canada Vacations ® †
  • Preferred Aeroplan pricing and free checked bags on Air Canada ® flights †
  • Minimum income: $60,000 personal or $100,000 household
  • Annual fee: $139
  • Application must be approved by June 3, 2024 to receive this offer

We value Aeroplan points at 2.1 cents per point. Using this valuation, at the lower end of the range, we’d value a welcome bonus of 40,000 Aeroplan points at around $840 (all figures in CAD), while an offer at the higher end of the range of 70,000 Aeroplan points can be worth a staggering $1,470.

Of course, depending on how you choose to redeem your points, it could also be worth much more or less.

The best time to apply is when the welcome bonus is at or close to 70,000 Aeroplan points, or any time when there’s an annual fee rebate.

While it’s always a good practice to wait for the highest welcome bonus possible, even with a lower welcome bonus, there’s a lot of value in signing up for the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card.

Every time you use your TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card, you’ll earn Aeroplan points.

The number of points you earn depends on where the purchase is made, as the card comes with the following earning rates:

  • Earn 1.5 Aeroplan points per dollar spent on eligible gas, groceries, and purchases made directly with Air Canada and Air Canada Vacations†
  • Earn 1 Aeroplan point per dollar spent on all other eligible purchases†

The elevated earning rates on gas and grocery purchases are on par with similar credit cards; however, there are other credit cards that offer better earning rates in these (and other) categories.

For example, a number of other credit cards offer elevated earning rates in categories such as dining, food delivery, recurring bill payments, and streaming services.

With the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card, when you spend money dining out or ordering in, you’ll only earn the baseline rate of 1 Aeroplan point per dollar spent.

Depending on how much you spend in certain categories, it may be worth considering putting some of your spending on a credit card other than the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card, and we’ll explore a couple potential options in the final section of this review.

Air Canada’s Aeroplan program is one of the best airline loyalty programs for anyone looking to travel at a fraction of the cost.

Not only can you redeem your Aeroplan points for Air Canada flights, but you can also redeem Aeroplan points for flights with 45+ partner airlines.

Aeroplan points are worth the most when you redeem them for long-haul business class and First Class flights. However, you can still get a lot of value when you redeem Aeroplan points for shorter flights, or even flights in economy.

For example, the welcome bonus that comes with the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card could potentially cover a one-way flight from Vancouver to Tokyo in business class, if you can find ANA business class awards for 55,000 points apiece.

Alternatively, if you want to explore a nearby city or book a positioning flight to a different airport, you could also use Aeroplan points to book short-haul flights. This can be a great option since one-way economy flights within North America that are under 500 miles cost as few as 6,000 points.

For example, a flight from Toronto to New York City is only 342 miles, meaning that you could book a round-trip economy flight between the cities for as few as 12,000 Aeroplan points.

If you’d like to learn more about Aeroplan’s incredible redemption opportunities, check out our guide to Aeroplan .

does td emerald visa have travel insurance

The TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card’s insurance coverage is very strong, and it’s one of the reasons why this card has such a high rating in this review.

To start, ‌the emergency medical insurance of up to $2,000,000 is available on the first 21 days of a trip (or on the first four days of a trip for cardholders aged 65 and up).†

Credit cards with similar annual fees usually only offer emergency medical insurance on the first 15 days of travel.

The card’s additional travel insurance offerings, including trip cancellation/trip interruption insurance, delayed and lost baggage insurance, and flight delay insurance all provide similar or better coverage than other comparable credit cards.

What’s more, most credit cards, even ones with excellent travel insurance, won’t cover you on award bookings, but with your TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card, you still enjoy insurance coverage on Aeroplan award bookings when you charge the full taxes and fees of the award ticket to your card.†

Lastly, when you use your card for larger expenses, you receive extra purchase and security insurance, and an extended warranty, including on mobile phone purchases.†

The TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card comes with additional benefits that make this card worth keeping for the long-term, especially if you fly with Air Canada.

One notable benefit is that you and up to eight travel companions on the same booking can all check one bag at no cost on Air Canada flights.†

With Air Canada, the first checked bag normally costs around $35 for one-way flights within North America, and $75 for one-way flights to other international destinations. That means that this benefit alone could‌ save you hundreds of dollars, especially if you travel often or as a couple or a family.

Other Air Canada benefits that come with the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card include the following:

  • Preferred pricing on Aeroplan redemptions on Air Canada flights†
  • Earning Status Qualifying Miles (SQM) and Status Qualifying Segments (SQS) through spending to help earn or maintain Aeroplan Elite Status †
  • No expiration for Aeroplan points as long as you remain a cardholder†

Rounding out the card’s benefits is the NEXUS rebate. Every four years, you’ll be eligible to receive a NEXUS application fee rebate of up to $100.†

There’s a lot to love about the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card, but there are also options to consider, depending on your travel goals.

For example, the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card doesn’t come with any airport lounge access.

If you’re looking for stronger airline benefits, including lounge access, then the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite Privilege* Card is worth considering, too.

For a higher annual fee, the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite Privilege* Card will earn you more Aeroplan points on your day-to-day expenses, and give you access to Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounges and airport lounges through the Visa Airport Companion Program .†

With this card, you’ll also enjoy priority boarding and check-in, plus even more Air Canada benefits.†

does td emerald visa have travel insurance

Alternatively, if you don’t care about travel benefits, and you’d rather earn the highest amount of Aeroplan points possible, the American Express Cobalt Card has the best earning rates in the country.

With the Amex Cobalt Card, you won’t earn Aeroplan points directly, but the Amex Membership Rewards points you earn can be transferred to Aeroplan points at a 1:1 ratio.

Notably, the American Express Cobalt Card earns 5 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent in select categories, including dining and groceries.

The TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card is a great credit card for Air Canada benefits and earning Aeroplan points, and it’s our pick for the best overall TD credit card product.

For a reasonable annual fee, you get a generous welcome bonus,  as well as strong ongoing credit card travel and insurance benefits.

There are other cards worth considering if you don’t mind paying more for better benefits, or if you’re willing to sacrifice Air Canada perks for better earning rates.

That being said, the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card is one of the best Aeroplan credit cards available to Canadians, and one that we recommend as an essential credit card for all Canadian travellers .

Despite the peace of mind, paying for additional car rental insurance is almost always unnecessary. If you own a car and have insurance, your policy will usually cover you for car rentals. Even if you don’t own a car, there are many cash back credit cards and travel credit cards in Canada that provide you with both collision and damage coverage for rental vehicles. Here are our picks for the best credit cards for car rental insurance in Canada.

How do you use credit card insurance coverage for rental cars?

In order to get your rental car insurance coverage you usually have to charge the full cost of a car rental to a credit card that has rental car insurance included. In rare cases, you could be eligible for coverage if you charge just part of the booking to the card. If you use your credit card points to book the rental car, you may not be eligible for the included rental car coverage. If your credit card provides rental car insurance and your booking is eligible for it, you’ll have to decline rental car insurance offered by the car agency you are renting from when you pick up the car.

What does credit card car rental insurance cover?

Credit card rental car insurance usually covers theft, loss and damage to your rental car in the case of an accidental collision. The cost of injuries to yourself or other drivers may not be covered by your credit card’s rental car insurance, and the cost of your stolen personal items from the rental car also may not be protected. You’ll want to check the fine print of your credit card’s insurance agreement to confirm.

What credit card should you use for car rentals?

Many travel credit cards offer credit card car rental insurance, as well as discounts on rental cars. Cards like the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Card or the BMO Ascend World Elite card provide great coverage on cars with an MSRP of up to $65,000. If you are going to rent a pricier car, the American Express Cobalt card or the American Express Gold Rewards cards are good choices, because they offer higher than average coverage, applicable to cars with an MSRP (manufacturer’s suggested retail price) of $85,000.

Is a collision damage waiver the same as credit card rental car insurance?

Collision damage waivers (CDW) offered by rental car companies may differ from the coverage offered by your credit card. Credit cards may offer damage waiver insurance, but to be eligible for coverage you’ll have to decline the CDW from the rental car agency. Even if you use the insurance coverage from your credit card in the case of an accident, the rental car agency may charge you additional administrative fees or charge you for the diminished value of the vehicle after repairs or loss that may not be covered by your card’s insurance.

What credit card rental car insurance does cover

Most credit cards offer excellent collision and damage insurance that will cover you for the cost of the rental car in the event it’s stolen, vandalized, lost or damaged – even if an accident is your fault.

Get in a fender bender? Suddenly find your parking spot is empty because someone broke into your car? In either of those cases, you’d be insured for the rental car (up to its MSRP) by your credit card.

In general, making use of the insurance on your credit card will save you from having to buy the optional collision/damage/loss waiver insurance from the rental agency (typically a cost of $16 to $23 per day) and still provide the coverage you need for the vehicle.

What credit card rental insurance won’t cover

While credit card car rental insurance will provide collision, damage, and loss coverage for the rental car itself, it won’t provide third party or personal injury insurance.

That means your credit card won’t cover you for any damage caused to someone else’s property or medical costs associated with an accident (like physiotherapy or other potential hospital bills). Outside of a few exceptions (like the BMO Ascend World Elite Mastercard ), most credit cards also won’t provide personal effects insurance. Personal effects is just a fancy word for valuables. So, if your rental car is stolen and your expensive laptop along with it, you won’t get any money back for your laptop.

Generally, though, if you own a car and already have an auto insurance policy, you’re probably covered for all the above and won’t need to pay out of pocket. But, if you don’t and you’re just relying on your credit card, you’ll only be covered for the cost of the rental car and you’ll need to purchase liability and personal injury insurance.

How credit card rental insurance works – the fine print

How credit card rental insurance works – the fine print Credit card rental car insurance, just like any insurance policy, has its fair share of fine print, terms, and legalese to decode. Here are some of the most important things to know:

1. Is your credit card eligible?

It might seem obvious, but start by checking if your card actually comes with rental car insurance in the first place, because not all do.

2. Rental insurance terms

If your card does offer coverage, get familiar with its terms. Ttypically, credit cards will cover vehicles with an MSRP of $65,000 or less for a period of between 31 and 48 days. MRSP stands for the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price - so be sure you know what the MSRP is for your chosen rental car before signing off.

3. How to activate credit card rental car insurance

Your credit card’s rental insurance won’t apply automatically, and you’ll need to: 1. pay for the full price of the rental car using your credit card, and 2. explicitly decline the collision/damage/loss waiver insurance from the rental agency for your card’s coverage to apply.

4. Limits to credit card car rental insurance

While credit card coverage usually applies around the world, that might not always be the case; like if you’re visiting a country that has a travel warning. Here are some other limitations:

  • Credit card rental insurance will cover almost all cars, SUVs and minivans, but it won’t cover every vehicle type (for example, exotic cars, motorcycles, trailers, and larger vehicles with over eight seats are exempt).
  • Your credit card must be in good standing, otherwise, coverage won’t apply.
  • Your credit card insurance won’t cover you in instances when you’re inebriated or carrying illegal goods.
  • Coverage is usually intended for rental cars that have been booked for personal use, and won’t apply if you’re using the rental for commercial purposes.
  • Credit card rental insurance will typically cover the primary cardholder as well as any driver who’s been given permission to use the vehicle by the primary cardholder.

Generally, if you’re renting a sedan or minivan just to get around or for a road trip out of the city, you’ll be covered through your card. To be extra safe, consider calling up your credit card company before reserving a rental car.

Last but not least, if you’re in the unfortunate situation where you have to make a claim, time will be of the essence as you’ll usually have to report a claim within 24 to 48 hours for it to be valid.

The TD Cash Back Visa Infinite offers a strong earn rate on rewards and the option to redeem your cash back at any time (minimum $25). Plus, the card packs a punch with added benefits like travel insurance coverage – which is rare for a cash back card.

  • High earn rate: Strong earn rate of 3% cash back on gas, groceries and recurring bills and 1% on all other purchases
  • Additional perks: Complimentary roadside assistance through Deluxe TD Auto Club membership, discounts at Avis and Budget Rent-A-Car locations
  • Travel insurance: This card includes travel medical and delayed/lost baggage insurance, which is quite uncommon for non-travel cards. Additional insurance includes purchase security and extended warranty protection.
  • Cap on key spending categories: $15,000 yearly spending cap for gas, groceries and recurring bills – after which the rate drops to 1%. Big spenders in these categories may want to consider partnering this card with one that offers non-capped rates
  • Income requirements: $60,000 minimum personal income requirement may pose a hurdle for some users

Along with offering 48 days of collision damage and loss insurance, the TD Cash Back Visa Infinite stands out for its strong earn rate of 3% cash back on gas. So, not only will you save on rental car insurance but at the pump too. Plus, you can knock an additional 5% to 10% off the base price when reserving a car from eligible Avis and Budget agency locations.

Honourable Mentions

While all our top choices highlighted above provide credit card rental coverage for up to 48 consecutive days, our list of honourable mentions below didn’t quite make the list because they offer coverage for 31 days. But, we thought they deserved a shoutout nonetheless because they’re great no fee credit cards that offer coverage despite the fact they’re free to carry.

The bottom line:

Regardless of which credit card you have, you can maximize your benefit from the car rental insurance provided. Before renting a vehicle, make sure that the rental agency will allow you to decline the collision damage waiver without making a deposit. Also check the rental car thoroughly for any scratches, dents, or damages before taking possession of the car. This will ensure you aren’t blamed for any damages prior to you taking possession of the vehicle.
