Disney Cruise Ship Rescues Stranded Passengers on New Year’s Eve

On December 31, 2023, the Disney Fantasy  engaged in a rescue mission after crews spotted a stranded boat filled with several passengers. While it’s incredibly rare, cruise lines do engage in the occasional rescue mission whenever necessary. This is something we’ve seen happen, not just on Disney Cruise Line but also within other cruise companies like Carnival and Norwegian.

At the tail end of the year, passengers watched as the Disney Fantasy  stopped and attempted to rescue multiple people North of Havana, Cuba. This event was captured on camera by a passenger traveling aboard the boat. In one of the videos, you can see Disney send out a boat to rescue a total of four different stranded passengers.

Eventually, the entire crew was safely rescued and delivered back to the Cuban Coast Guard.

According to Jason Dhaliwal , the user who shared video footage of the rescue, the crew was stranded on a boat with no motor. As we stated earlier, rescue missions are incredibly rare, but this does not mean they do not happen. In the last few years, we’ve seen Disney Cruise Line aid in multiple rescue missions.

The  Disney Fantasy  launched back in 2012 and has remained one of Disney’s best additions to its fleet of cruise ships. The  Fantasy  features a whopping 4,000 passenger capacity and includes a wide range of activities, shops, restaurants, and entertainment options for guests to choose from.

Disney Cruise Line started back in 1998 with its first ship, the  Disney Magic.  Since then, Disney’s fleet of cruise ships has grown significantly, now featuring five ships in total, with two more on the way. The most recent addition to the Disney Cruise Line set sail for the first time in 2022 with the Disney Wish.  The next ship on the horizon is the Disney Treasure.  Disney is not stopping with the Disney Treasure, with a second new ship also being built.

The newest addition to the Disney Cruise Line fleet is the Global Dream , which was built for a different company before Disney acquired it. Disney Cruise Line passenger rescued by US Coast Guard after emergency off Puerto Rico

Drone footage captured the moment a pregnant woman was airlifted from a Disney cruise ship by the U.S. Coast Guard on Monday.

A rescuer could be seen rappelling down from an MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter onto the Disney Fantasy, floating in the Atlantic Ocean northwest of Puerto Rico , in video shared by the Coast Guard. 

The 35-year-old woman was strapped to a gurney and reeled into the helicopter in the heart-pounding moment. The agency said the woman "required a higher level of medical care" than what on board doctors could provide in the ship's medical bay.

"Coast Guard watchstanders in Sector San Juan received a communication from the Disney Fantasy Monday morning requesting medevac assistance as the cruise ship was transiting 260 nautical miles northwest of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico," the agency wrote in a press release.

"Once on scene, the Coast Guard Jayhawk aircrew deployed their rescue swimmer aboard the cruise ship, who prepared a rescue basket and litter to safely hoist the patient and cruise ship doctor aboard the aircraft," the Coast Guard said.

An HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft was also flown in from Air Station Miami for the rescue.

The passenger was airlifted to Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. From there, the agency said, she was whisked to Centro Medico Hospital. 

"Our crew was able to quickly, safely, and efficiently execute a long-range MEDEVAC for the patient to receive the higher level of care she required," Lt. Cmdr. Todd Stephens said in a statement. "This case demonstrates the value of good crew resource management and the capabilities of our Jayhawk helicopter."

"We are glad everything came together to help this passenger," said Ensign Michael Riccio, Coast Guard Sector San Juan operations unit leader for the case. "The competency displayed by the Disney Fantasy crew and the Coast Guard personnel and units involved made all the difference."

The cruise had launched two days earlier from Port Canaveral, Florida, according to Cruise Hive .

The ship is currently sailing a seven-night itinerary in the Eastern Caribbean, visiting Tortola on Tuesday, and is scheduled to dock in St. Thomas on Wednesday and will visit Disney's private island Castaway Cay before returning to port, Cruise Hive reported.

Disney Cruise Line did not immediately return a request for comment.

Disney Fantasy Comes To Halt to Aid Coast Guard Search and Rescue

This Disney Fantasy, the Disney Cruise Line ship offering 7-day sailings to the Eastern and Western Caribbean found itself in a bit of a precarious position today as it’s charted course intersected with an active Coast Guard operation to rescue a group at sea.

  We were first notified of the incident when Scott Gustin shared a post from Theme Park Explorer. This morning, guests aboard the Disney Fantasy were reporting that the ship was circling a particular area at sea looking for people in the water. When details were initially revealed, it wasn’t clear whether the search and rescue was for passengers aboard the Disney Cruise Line Ship or another vessel.

As you can see from the update above, the United States Coast Guard has since taken to Twitter give us further details of the tragedy that was unfolding.  According to Coast Guard,  four people drowned 50 miles off Little Torch Key which is an island in Monroe County, Florida.

In a further tweet, the Coat Guard confirmed that some passengers in the capsized ship were rescued as they were wearing life jackets.  At the time of rescue there were 6-8 foot seas as well as 30 mph winds. 

There is no information as of yet as to whether the Disney Fantasy continues to be impacted by the search and rescue.  It would appear that they did stop to aid the Coast Guard in their initial search for passengers from the capsized vessel.  This is a story that we will continue to follow closely here at MickeyBlog.  Readers are encouraged to keep following along with us for further news and updates.

Coast guard makes emergency rescue on disney cruise.

In 1998, Disney expanded its empire to the high seas with the launch of the first ship in the Disney Cruise Line — the Disney Magic . Since then, Disney Cruise Line has grown exponentially and sails all over the world. It has also gone from one ship to five — the Disney  Magic , Disney Dream , Disney Fantasy , Disney  Wonder , and its newest ship, the Disney  Wish .

There are also three ships that will set sail in the coming years — the Disney  Treasure , Disney  Adventure , and Disney  Destiny .

The Disney  Wish  was announced at Disney’s 2019 D23 Expo in Anaheim, California. Three years later, the Wish  set on her maiden voyage from Port Canaveral, Florida to the Bahamas and Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay . Guests can currently book three and four-night cruises aboard the gorgeous ship. They can even book special trips that celebrate Halloween and the holidays!

Taking a Disney cruise is typically a very magical experience. But one guest recently had a terrifying medical experience and had to be rescued from the Disney Fantasy   by the U.S. Coast Guard.

According to a recent tweet from the official account of Port Canaveral , a pregnant guest began experiencing medical distress. The Coast Guard was called in. They landed a helicopter on the ship and MEDEVAC’d the guest off so she could get the medical treatment she needed.

The US Coast Guard also shared a video of the rescue and, thankfully, shared that they were able to safely remove the passenger from the ship and transport her to a hospital where she could receive the care she needed.

The Disney Fantasy  is one of Disney’s earlier cruise ships and has been enchanting the seas for more than a decade. It is truly a place where fantasy becomes reality . Guests can enjoy dinner and a show at Animator’s Palate, or eat like kings and queens at Royal Court. For a quick bite, they can enjoy offerings from places like Flo’s Café and Frozone Treats.

Disney cruises are known for their top-of-the-line entertainment, and the Disney Fantasy is no exception. Many Disney Cruises feature gorgeous fireworks shows at night as guests watch from the deck. Then, there are the Broadway-caliber shows onboard . Guests on the  Fantasy can watch shows like  Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular, Frozen – A Musical Spectacular,  and  Disney’s Believe .

Man Overboard! Disney Cruise Rescues Royal Caribbean Passenger from Ocean

Talk about being in the right place at the right time.

When a passenger on a Royal Caribbean cruise recently fell overboard it wasn’t his own cruise ship that rescued him. The crew of a Disney cruise line that just happened to be passing by actually fished him out of the water.

The 22-year-old man was a passenger on Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas when, due to unknown reasons; he ended up in the water. That’s when passengers aboard the Disney Magic ship saw him and alerted the ship’s crew.

The crew lowered a lifeboat boat into the ocean and sailed out to rescue the man. He was immediately taken to shore for treatment.

Royal Caribbean confirmed the incident and detailed the rescue in a statement: “He was spotted by a crew member from another cruise ship, and picked up. We are grateful for the other ship’s assistance.”

The rescue sheds light on safety issues and whether ships should have technology that detects when someone on the ship goes overboard. Maritime attorney Jim Walker told Florida Today that this accident enforces his belief that ships need motion sensors and thermal detection systems that would indicate if someone goes overboard.

Either way, the rescued man has to be thanking his lucky stars for his personal Disney miracle.

Video shows Coast Guard rescuing pregnant woman from Disney cruise

A pregnant passenger aboard Disney Fantasy had to be airlifted from the cruise ship after experiencing health complications. 

The  U.S. Coast Guard  said the cruise line requested medevac services with its San Juan, Puerto Rico, sector Monday morning due to the 35-year-old woman requiring "a higher level of medical care ashore." Soon after, a Coast Guard MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter and an HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft from Miami made their way toward the ship's spot in the Atlantic Ocean, 180 miles northwest of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico.

Video shows the aircraft approaching above the ship before a rescuer lowers down onto it by rope. The Coast Guard said that was the Jayhawk crew's "rescue swimmer," who prepared a "rescue basket and litter to safely hoist the patient and  cruise ship  doctor" aboard the chopper.

Seven people can be seen in the footage carrying the patient on a stretcher toward an area where one team member attached her and the cot to a hanging rope. She was then lifted to the helicopter door and brought safely inside.

Emergency medical personnel local to San Juan, Puerto Rico, met the Coast Guard aircrew and the patient at the city's Fernando Luis Ribas Dominicci Airport, then transported the woman to a local hospital, the military body said.

Carnival ship catches fire at sea, part of funnel collapses on deck

While no passengers were injured, the cruise line confirms that two firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation.

"Our crew was able to quickly, safely and efficiently execute a long-range MEDEVAC for the patient to receive the higher level of care she required," said Lt. Cmdr. Todd Stephens. "This case demonstrates the value of good crew resource management and the capabilities of our Jayhawk helicopter."

"The competency displayed by the Disney Fantasy crew and the Coast Guard personnel and units involved made all the difference," said Ensign Michael Riccio, Coast Guard Sector San Juan operations unit leader for the case.

The woman's name and the reason for her medical emergency were not made clear as of Tuesday evening. 

Disney Cruise Lines'  website  states it has a doctor and nurse on call 24/7 in the event of medical emergencies onboard, while a daily clinic is available for non-emergent care.

It also says  pregnant women  are permitted to sail with the company, but those who are past their 24th week or who will enter their 24th week during the voyage cannot be permitted passage due to safety concerns.

"Neither a doctor's medical statement nor a waiver of liability will be accepted," the website states. "In addition, Disney Cruise Line cannot be held responsible or liable for any complications relating to pregnancy at any stage."

Carnival cruise ship rescues 25 people stranded off the coast of Mexico

A Carnival Cruise Line ship responded to a call from the U.S. Coast Guard and rescued 25 people stranded in a small boat off the coast of Mexico, the company announced Saturday.

The 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance had left Long Beach, California, on Friday and was heading toward Ensenada Mexico for a three-day sailing when the cruise ship's officers were informed by the Coast Guard "about a distress call involving a small vessel," a news release said.

The ship immediately routed toward the location of the vessel, provided by the USCG, and "quickly" rescued all 25 people on board, including three children, the company said.

The U.S. Coast Guard did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for comment.

The rescued group was welcomed onto the cruise ship and given food, water, and medical assistance. Carnival coordinated with the Coast Guard to hand off the group.

The incident did not disrupt the Carnival Radiance's schedule, the company announced.
