Disney Cruise Line Luggage: What You Need to Know Before Sailing

by Kelly Coffey-Behrens | Jan 3, 2024 | Disney Cruise Line

Wondering what the deal is with luggage on Disney Cruise Line vacations? We’re covering the luggage policy, details on checking bags, and more below.

If you’ve never sailed on Disney Cruise Line before, you probably have a ton of questions before your vacation begins. One of the details that’s typically top of mind for soon-to-be cruise sailings is luggage. How many pieces of luggage are you allowed to bring on your Disney Cruise Line vacation? How many pieces of luggage are you allowed to check or carry on with you when boarding? Do Disney Cruise Line staff members help you with your luggage?

In this guide, we’ll answer all of those questions, and more related to luggage on Disney Cruise Line ships, to help alleviate any stress before you set sail.

The Disney Cruise Line Luggage Allowance

How many pieces of luggage are you allowed to bring on your Disney Cruise Line vacation? The luggage allowance for Disney Cruise Line ships is two suitcases per person.

Ahead of your Disney cruise, you will receive luggage tags. These are meant to be placed on the pieces of luggage you’ll be checking (those two suitcases mentioned above). The luggage tags contain your cruise specifics, from your name and reservation number to your stateroom number, ship information, and sailing date. It’s how the porters, or the individuals who handle Disney Cruise Line luggage, will keep track of all of the checked luggage that comes on board.

In addition to the two suitcases you can check, you may bring one carry-on bag (not to exceed 22 inches high, 14 inches wide, and 9 inches deep in dimension) and one personal bag onto the ship.

Pro tip: Make sure you save a little room in your suitcases for any souvenirs you may purchase while on your vacation!

Do Disney Cruise Line Cast Members Help You With Your Luggage?

Yes, Cast Members – porters, to be specific – will be on hand on your departure day to help with your luggage.

If you’re driving or taking cruise transportation , as soon as you arrive at the port, porters will take your luggage off your hands and ensure it gets on the ship. If you’re flying, you will check your luggage in with the Disney Cruise Line Cast Members at the airport after you have arrived.

Regardless, once you hand over your luggage (with those luggage tags attached!), Cast Members will hand-deliver your luggage to your stateroom later on that day. Luggage typically takes just a couple of hours to arrive at your room.

Is There a Luggage Storage Service at Port Canaveral Cruise Terminal?

Disney doesn’t offer luggage storage outside of your stateroom onboard whichever Disney Cruise Line ship you’re sailing aboard, but there are plenty of spots to tuck the bags away after unpacking, such as in the closets or underneath the bed.

What to Pack in Checked Luggage for a Disney Cruise

You can pack pretty much anything in your checked luggage – with a few exceptions! Your checked suitcases are ideal for the bulk of your cruise attire, your toiletries, and items like beach towels, hats, outwear, shoes, and more.

You cannot, however, bring the following on board in your checked luggage:

  • Firearms and ammunition, any kind of knife, sword, dagger, bullwhip or any other type of weapon
  • Homemade, precooked, or other perishable items
  • Bottle warmers
  • Sporting equipment
  • Musical instruments
  • Illegal drugs (inclusive of medically prescribed and synthetic marijuana)
  • Coolers, except those carrying medications, baby food or items related to dietary constraints

Please note that Disney Cruise Line is not responsible for lost personal items.

What to Pack in Carry-On Luggage for a Disney Cruise

It’s important to keep any necessities you’ll need during the boarding process and throughout your first few hours onboard the ship with you in your carry-on cruise luggage. This means you’ll want to pack items such as medication, travel documents, credit cards and cash, and valuables in your carry-on bags, as it can take a few hours before your luggage shows up outside your stateroom door.

Even with your essentials in your carry-on luggage, cruise vacationers should always be cautious when carrying cash, credit cards, jewelry, cameras, personal electronics, and medications. Keep these items within reach until  you complete the check-in process and are on board. Then, you’ll be able to bring these important items to your stateroom and store them inside the safe.

Disney Cruise Luggage Policy – What You Need to Know

Sharing is caring!

One of the questions I get asked a lot is what is the Disney Cruise Luggage Policy.

There seems to be quite a bit of confusion about this but the rules are pretty easy to understand.

First, we look at the Disney Cruise Contract which states that

“Each Guest is allowed to bring aboard the Vessel a reasonable amount of clothing and personal effects, not to exceed two (2) bags per person. Every piece of baggage must be distinctly labeled with the Guest’s name, Vessel’s name, stateroom number, and sailing date.”

disney cruise luggage policy

DCL doesn’t, unlike some cruise lines, say what the size or weight of the luggage should be. Princess Cruise Line has no restrictions at all, but for Norwegian Cruise Line, guests are limited to two pieces of checked luggage weighing up to 48 pounds each.

I know if you look this up online there are lots of sites saying that you are restricted to size and weight. But there is nothing I could find on the Disney website itself other than the limit to the 2 bags I show above.

From personal experience of many Disney cruises, I have never seen anyone challenged about the size, weight, or amount of luggage.

But I have seen guests with huge amounts of luggage!

But, Common Sense

Just because you can bring a suitcase weighing 80 pounds, doesn’t mean that you ought to.

Many people sailing on a Disney cruise are arriving at the port by airplane. So they are going to need to abide by all the airline restrictions about amount, size, weight, and prohibited items in carry-on and checked luggage.

However, if this isn’t a consideration for you as you are driving to the port, you should still use common sense to decide the amount of luggage that you need.

Carry-On Bags and Personal Items

There is no size or weight restriction for carry-on bags, but do remember that all items will be going through the x-ray machine.

Cruise Carry On Bag

Also, you will have your carry-on bags with you until your staterooms are ready which is usually around 1.30 pm. You do not want to be carrying too much around with you whilst you tour the ship and try and bluster your way through the buffet.

Always remember to keep essential items with you and do not pack them in checked luggage. Here is a basic list of what you should have in your carry-on bag.

  • Passport/Visa or government-issued ID
  • Cruise documents (boarding pass, cruise contract, etc.)
  • Travel insurance information
  • Emergency contact list
  • Credit cards and a small amount of local currency
  • Prescription medications in their original bottles
  • Basic first-aid items (band-aids, pain relievers, etc.)
  • Seasickness remedies (if prone to motion sickness)

There are other items I recommend, but these are the basics.

If you want a more comprehensive guide then go to How to Pack Your Carry on Like an Expert.

Prohibited Items and Safety Regulations

Disney Cruise Line has strict safety regulations, which include a list of prohibited items that you must not pack in your carry-on or checked luggage.

These prohibited items include:

  • Illegal drugs including marijuana
  • Firearms and ammunition
  • Irons and bottle warmers
  • Certain electrical appliances

This is just a sample list and more items are not allowed on a Disney cruise ship. You can read more about this at:

What You Must Not Take on Your Disney Cruise

Violating these restrictions can lead to confiscation of items or even denial of boarding.

Next time you disembark your Disney cruise have a look at the table of items you will see in the luggage hall at the end – it is usually pretty full of items that have been confiscated and are waiting for their owners to pick them up!

Apple AirTag – The Essential Luggage Accessory

apple air tag deal

This is my new favorite travel essential.

For those of you new to AirTags it is Apple’s Bluetooth tracking device. You simply attach it to things you don’t want to lose, for example, keys, wallet, or luggage. You can then track it with an iPhone or iPad.

It is also potentially incredibly useful if an airline loses your luggage – you should be able to see its location.

Packing Tips and Checklists

When packing for a Disney Cruise, it’s imperative to include all travel essentials while following the luggage guidelines.

Efficient packing can enhance your cruise experience by ensuring you have everything you need while abiding by the luggage restrictions.

Essential Medications and Health Products

I make sure to pack all essential medications and health products in my carry-on bag .

It’s important to bring a sufficient supply of any prescription medications for the duration of the cruise, and I keep them in their original labeled containers to avoid any issues during security checks.

Additionally, carrying proof of prescriptions can be helpful.

Packing a small first-aid kit with items like band-aids, pain relievers, and seasickness remedies is also advisable. Here’s a checklist for quick reference:

  • Prescription medications (in original containers)
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers
  • Seasickness medication
  • First-aid items (band-aids, antiseptic wipes)
  • Hand sanitizer and travel-size toiletries

Frequently Asked Questions

Navigating Disney Cruise Line’s luggage policy can be simple once you know the essentials. I’ve compiled the most common inquiries to ensure a smooth embarkation process for your cruise.

disney wish for adults

What are the weight restrictions for luggage on Disney Cruise Line?

For checked luggage, there are no specific weight limits imposed by Disney Cruise Line. However, airlines often have weight restrictions, which I recommend checking before your flight to the port.

Can I take carry-on luggage on board a Disney cruise, and what are the size limits?

You can take carry-on bags and personal items such as purses (also Mickey Ears are encouraged). There are no posted size or weight restrictions for carry-on bags.

What is the maximum size allowed for checked luggage with Disney Cruise Line?

There is no maximum size regulated by Disney Cruise Line. However, if you are traveling by air you will have specific size and weight limits for your luggage so you need to check with your airline.

Are guests provided with Disney Cruise luggage tags for their bags?

In theory, yes!

Two or three weeks before sailing you should receive your luggage tags in the mail. There are two tags per person.

However, it often happens that these luggage tags aren’t received. I would say that most of the time in the past few years I have not received my luggage labels, even if I have booked my cruise well in advance.

Don’t worry if you don’t get your luggage labels either. Always make sure that you have your identification tags on your items, and then when you arrive at the port ask one of the porters for however many labels that you need.

Make sure that you have your stateroom number written on the label. The porters are always very good at checking that you have everything right.

Remember to tip them at least $1 per bag that you are checking in.

Also when you are overpacking your bag think about the porters and crew that will have to handle that for you – so don’t make it too heavy.

Are there any restrictions on bringing bottled water or other beverages in the carry-on luggage?

Guests are allowed to bring a limited amount of bottled water or non-alcoholic beverages in their carry-on luggage, as long as they are unopened and carried in a day bag that fits within the size limitations for carry-on items.

Coolers are permitted if they are no larger than 12 x 12 x 12 (30.5cm x 30.5cm x 30.5cm), and used as carry-on luggage only for storing medications, baby food, or nonperishable items related to dietary restrictions only.

Do not pack any beverages in your checked luggage.

What is the policy for carrying alcohol in carry-on luggage on a Disney Cruise?

Guests aged 21 and over may bring a maximum of 2 unopened bottles of wine or champagne (no larger than 750ml) or 6 beers (no larger than 12 ounces) on board in their carry-on luggage at the beginning of the voyage and each port visited.

Remember always to pack this in carry-on luggage.

It is advisable to contact the cruise line in advance to discuss any specific needs and make necessary arrangements.

During embarkation and disembarkation, it is important to have your bags properly labeled with the provided luggage tags. This ensures that your bags are delivered to the correct stateroom and are easily identifiable. It is also recommended to keep essential items like medications, travel documents, and valuables in your carry-on bags to have them readily available throughout the journey.

2024 Disney Cruise Packing List: Essentials to Pack & What Not to Bring

2024 Disney Cruise Packing List: Essentials to Pack & What Not to Bring

If you have ever been on a Disney Parks vacation before, you know there are essentials that you must pack no matter what. The same goes for a Disney cruise which is why a Disney cruise packing list is important. The essentials though are going to be slightly different because it is a different type of vacation with vastly different activities.

Going on any Disney vacation is exciting, but a Disney cruise has to be at the top of the list for vacations. Not only do you get a relaxing and remote vacation, but everything is Disney-fied! It really is the best of both worlds, especially if you are traveling with people who like Disney but not the stress that comes with the theme parks. You can see our Disney World vs. Disney Cruise guide for a full comparison if you are deciding how you'd like to spend your next vacation.

The other difference is that at Disney parks, most of the time you are dressing for comfort in the heat and walkability in your footwear. When embarking on your Disney cruise, you could be spending four days going to the Caribbean or a two-week-long Alaskan adventure. These two cruises are going to require many different items for you to be comfortable which we all list on our Disney Cruise packing list. Through our Disney Cruise packing list, we will try to be inclusive of all cruise needs as well as address what you may need for specific locations.

Disney Cruise Packing List- Boarding Day

disney cruise line boarding day

Boarding the cruise ship is better known as “Embarkation Day,” and many first-time cruisers don’t know or underestimate the items they need for the day for their Disney Cruise packing list.

When you get to the cruise terminal, Disney Cruise Line luggage handlers will load your luggage for you onto the boat and into your cabin or stateroom (this is your “hotel” room on the ship). While this is great because you don’t have to worry about boarding the boat with it, it also means you will be away from your belongings for most of the day. It could be late into the day by the time the crew members actually deliver your belongings.

When you board the cruise, there are many activities you can participate in that will help determine what you need for the day. Guests can eat, explore the ship, go swimming, attend welcome activities, and visit your room.

It is incredibly important when packing for your cruise that you make sure you have a bag packed with all the necessities for the first day that you won't check. We particularly like a backpack or day bag like this one as it squishes down to save space to carry with you. Not to worry though because we have you covered with the essentials you need.

What to Wear on Disney Cruise

Disney Cruise Line Packing List Alaska

Living on a cruise ship for 4-10 days can have you questioning, what clothes should I pack for my Disney Cruise?

Disney Cruise Line suggests that guests should pack clothing that will allow them to dress comfortably for vacation. Guests should also bring the appropriate attire for dinners and Port Adventures.

A lot of the clothing that you will pack is going to depend upon your destination. If you are cruising somewhere warm, then shorts, t-shirts, and dresses will probably make up most of your wardrobe. If you are cruising somewhere colder, then jeans, sweatshirts, and jackets may be the go-to. We also always end up doing some workout during the sailing to burn off the endless good food that you can enjoy while onboard. Here's a look at the workout facility onboard the Disney Wonder ship.

disney wonder work out room

Disney Cruise Line pools are all heated, so a bathing suit is recommended no matter which cruise destination you are sailing to. You may want to pack more than one bathing suit if you are going to a warmer destination and have water excursions planned.

Generally for Disney Cruise Line we recommend the same thing that we do for all Disney vacations – wear clothes that are comfortable but nice looking. Throughout your trip you'll want to be capturing photos and making memories. By no means are we saying to wear a collar the whole time, but maybe leave the t-shirt with the holes in it at home. You will be seen by hundreds of other people on the ship each day and have photos from this trip forever.

Below we dive into more of what you should wear on a Disney Cruise for the various activities on the ship and off.

Disney Cruise Line Dining

When dining on a Disney Cruise, there are multiple dining experiences that each have their own dress code. Also, depending on the length of the cruise there can be specialty dining events.

Before packing, make sure to check what dining experiences you have booked to ensure you have the right level of dress.

3-night cruises:

One cruise casual night One pirate night themed deck party One optional “dress-up night”

4-night cruises:

First night is cruise casual One pirate night themed deck party One optional dress-up night Final night is cruise casual

7-night cruises:

First night is cruise casual One pirate night or other themed deck party 3 additional cruise casual nights One formal and one semi-formal night

Typically we will wear the same clothes we wore to dinner to the show afterwards because there isn't really enough time to change without being rushed.

Disney Cruise Packing List- Dining

Cruise casual dining attire is in the majority of the dining restaurants. This simply means no swimwear or tank tops. It is completely optional to dress up.

What to Wear on Disney Cruise Formal Night

On a Disney Cruise, formal attire means more dressed up than your cruise casual. This would be attire that makes you feel a little more fancy than just your normal grabbing a bite to eat. Cocktail dresses, skirts, button-down shirts, jackets, a tie, are all acceptable forms of formal attire on a Disney Cruise.

Disney Cruise Line Specialty Themed Nights

On almost all sailings in the Caribbean and Bahamas, as well as some other destinations, Disney hosts a Pirate Night for guests. On this night, guests can choose to dress as a pirate and there is a special deck party. Disney will give every guest a pirate-themed bandana to wear on Pirate Night.

If you didn’t bring anything with you and want to dress up, the onboard shops will sell full pirate costumes for children as well as faux hook hands, eye patches, and other related accouterments. Guests are welcome to dress up how little or how much they want to with the themed night.

Pirate Night Disney Cruise Line

Pixar nights happen on most seven-night Alaska cruises. Again, dressing up is optional, but many guests will typically adorn a Pixar-themed shirt.

Adult Exclusive Dining

Disney understands that adults love the Disney Cruises, but sometimes they need to have an adult-only experience.

Each cruise ship has adult-exclusive restaurants. These restaurants are elegant dining experiences and the dress code is formal or semi-formal (dress casual is permitted). Clothing such as T-shirts, swimwear and sports attire are not permitted at all.

disney cruise line palo restaurant

Adults-only restaurants will vary depending on the ship. Below are the restaurants available in the Disney Cruise Line fleet:

Palo: An elegant northern Italian-inspired dining venue aboard the Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. Remy: A love letter to the City of Lights, serving up sophisticated French cuisine aboard the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. Palo Steakhouse: Acclaimed Italian cuisine is paired with world-class steakhouse fare aboard the Disney Wish. Enchanté: A romantic dining venue featuring French-inspired delicacies aboard the Disney Wish.

Disney states that “guests are requested to dress in a manner consistent with the restaurant’s atmosphere. Formal or semi-formal attire is recommended.” Though a dressed-up casual look is now permitted, we really recommend that you take the opportunity to get dressed up to really enjoy the fancier meal away from the kids and other families.

Can I Bring My Own Food and Drink?

At Disney Parks it is not uncommon for guests to bring their own food and drinks to the hotel rooms as well as the parks to help save costs but also for the familiar foods that help keep your body happy.

With a Disney Cruise, guests can also bring their own food and drinks, but there are rules and limits. The first and major rule is that all food and beverages must be packed in your carry-on item. This is why we listed it on your boarding day packing essentials.

If you want to bring food aboard, Disney Cruise Line asks for guests to follow the following packing restrictions

Non Perishable snack foods packed in sealed, original packaging. All items must either be consumed prior to returning to your home port or remain unopened.

Breast milk brought on board in carry-on luggage only.

Coolers no larger than 12″ x 12″ x 12″, as carry-on luggage for storing medications, baby food or items related to dietary restrictions only.

Alcohol & Other Beverages

On a Disney Cruise all sodas, coffees and teas are included in the cost of the cruise with meals and at the beverage stations. Bar drinks, beer, wine, smoothies, specialty coffees and bottled water are an additional charge.

Guests 21 and older boarding the cruise are able to bring two bottles of unopened wine/champagne or six beers at the beginning of your sailing. You will need to provide your own corkscrew to open the bottles if you plan to enjoy it in your room. You can also purchase additional alcohol at port when you are on land. Each time that you go to port you can bring on an additional six pack or two bottles of wine per person.

If you bring your wine/champagne to the main dining rooms, there is a $25 corkage fee per bottle brought to dinner. The Cast Members will store your bottle for you to drink each night at dinner.

Port Excursions Disney Cruise Line Packing List

Depending on your cruise destination, you will be able to book excursions at your port to fully experience the destinations that you cruised to.

For Bahamian Cruises, Disney usually books a day at the Disney Owned island, Castaway Cay. Guests will want to pack sunscreen, bathing suits, water-bottles, maybe some sand toys, and anything else you may need to enjoy a day at the beach. These are some perfect water-bottles that are good for bringing along with you.

During Alaskan Disney cruises , the beach and your bathing suit will most likely not be used when you get off the ship. Many cruisers have needed multiple jackets, hats, and gloves depending on the time of year.

The best thing to pack for port excursions is to look at the Disney Website and what they recommend for your excursion attire.

Disney Items

Mickey Ears: No Disney trip would be complete without a pair of Mickey Ears. Disney has specific cruise line merchandise, including ears to buy, but check out the official Disney ears here on Shop Disney or find other licensed Disney Mickey ears that cost less on Amazon here .

Princess Dresses & Costumes: There are many character meet and greets available on board the cruise ships. Your princes and princesses may want to bring their dresses or costumes aboard the ship for pictures. For costumes the following toys are allowed: Store-bought light sabers, Plastic toy “pirate” swords & Plastic store-bought toy “Mjolnir” hammers (Thor's hammer) You can find good deals on all of these here .

disney door magnets for packing list

Children over 6 months of age are eligible to sail on cruises. Having items that are comfortable to them and that you are used to using every day will be incredibly important.

If you happen to forget something, there are typically some items available in the on board shops, but it is always best to try to pack your own.

Items you may want to bring: Bottles/sippy cups, Diapers, Wipes, Pacifiers, Baby food, Breastmilk/formula, Swim diapers, Baby carrier.

Pack n play/Cribs are available on board. A limited number of approved bottle warmers and bottle sterilizers are available upon request through Guest Services on board.

Disney Cruise List Packing List- Misc Items

verandah room view disney cruise line alaska

There are a variety of Disney Cruise Line packing list items that you should bring to have just in case or to improve your stay in your state room.

Bag or backpack to carry with you: You don’t want to drag your entire suitcase with you around the ship or want to have to constantly go back to your room when you need something. Make sure to pack a small bag that you can carry essentials (hand sanitizer, chapstick, sunscreen, bathing suit cover-up, etc) around the ship.

Camera: If you have a professional camera, decide whether you want to bring it along.

Battery Pack: You may want to bring a battery pack for your phone or other devices. As we mention above, we swear by the Anker PowerCore Portable charger . This charger holds 3-4 phone charges, is light, small, and affordable. Buy it here >

Ponchos: When traveling, you never know when rain is going to hit. Some of the excursions you book may also get you wet. Having your own poncho can help to keep you dry. You can order these on Amazon.

Lanyards: Lanyards work great for holding trading pins or your Key to the World Card. This card is used to get into the rooms and make purchases on board. See best lanyard options .

Your own glow sticks: Partying on the cruise deck late at night can be a ton of fun. Add even more fun with glow sticks. You can order these here.

Sunscreen & Aloe Vera: This is important- no one wants a sunburn on vacation. And sunscreen will cost more on the ship. You can never have enough.

Seasickness Medication/ Band/ Patch: Many people don’t know that they get seasick until they are aboard a cruise ship. I never get seasick, carsick, or have issues on roller coasters, but we sailed during a tropical storm once and I was incredibly sick. Having some sort of seasickness medication, band, or patch can be helpful in those just in case moments. Check out these options on Amazon.

Chapstick or lip balm: You would be surprised at how quickly your lips get chapped. Buy chapstick here .

Small pack of Kleenex: You don’t want to have to run to the bathroom or your stateroom every time you need to blow your nose. Grab a travel tissue pack to keep in your ship bag. Buy Kleenex travel packs here .

Anti-bacterial Gel Hand Sanitizer: Keep the germs away and buy travel hand sanitizer here.

Medications: Don’t forget to pack some pain reliever and tums/ Pepto Bismol! Always good to have just in case. Make sure it is in the original packaging.

Ear plugs: If you’re jammed in a room with others, bringing ear plugs can be a great choice. I prefer to bring a bulk bag and particularly like these earplugs with the connecting cord so you don't lose them.

Anything you need to make your child comfortable: Make sure to access the sleeping situation of your children before leaving home. Even the littlest thing to improve the amount or quality of sleep is valuable.

Books: During the day you are on the cruise ship there are a ton of activities that you can take part in (trivia, spa, swimming, games, athletics, etc.), but there may be times you want some down time to relax. Grabbing a book to read may be the best way to enjoy a relaxing day at sea.

What Not To Bring- Disney Cruise Packing List

The Disney Cruise Line has provided a list of items guests should not include in their packing. This list is compiled with the safety guidelines that are mandated by the US Customs and Port Security, so it is important for guests to leave these items at home. These are some of the items on the list:

  • Diving Equipment
  • Flammable Liquids & Combustible Substances
  • Restraining devices
  • Perishable items
  • Electrical Appliances (heating pads, power strips, diffusers, blenders, streaming devices, bottle warmers, irons, etc.)
  • Illegal narcotics/drugs, medically prescribed marijuana, drug paraphernalia
  • Sports equipment, except golf clubs and sports balls that must be stored in the room and only used at port.
  • Wheeled Recreational Equipment
  • Over-the-door hanging organizers, over-the-door hooks
  • Weapons: Firearms and ammunition, explosives, knives, sword, dagger, bullwhip

Disney Cruise Line reserves the right to seize and secure any item deemed to be dangerous or pose a security or safety risk, so it is better to just leave these items at home than try to sneak them in.

What is the luggage allowance for a Disney cruise?

disney cruise luggage rules

Planning for your upcoming Disney cruise? One of the important factors to consider is the luggage allowance. You’re probably wondering, how much luggage can you take on a Disney cruise? Well, worry not, as we’ve got you covered. In this article, we will explore the luggage allowance for a Disney cruise , providing you with all the essential information you need to ensure a stress-free and enjoyable journey. So, let’s dive right in and find out how much luggage you can bring on your magical adventure at sea.

Table of Contents

Luggage allowance for a Disney Cruise

Overview of luggage policy

When it comes to planning for your Disney Cruise , it’s important to have a good understanding of the luggage policy that is in place. This will ensure that you are well-prepared and can pack accordingly for your vacation. The luggage policy for Disney Cruises is designed to ensure the safety and security of all passengers and to provide a comfortable and enjoyable experience for everyone on board.

Carry-on luggage allowance

Carry-on luggage refers to the bags that you are allowed to bring with you onto the ship and keep with you throughout your journey. These bags should contain all the essentials that you will need during embarkation day and possibly even for the first few hours on board. It’s important to note that larger suitcases or bags that exceed the carry-on size restrictions will need to be checked in instead.

Checked luggage allowance

Checked luggage, on the other hand, refers to the larger suitcases or bags that you will hand over to the porters upon arrival at the terminal. These bags will be delivered to your stateroom, allowing you to have a more hassle-free boarding process. The number of checked bags allowed per guest and the size restrictions for these bags may vary depending on the length of your cruise.

Additional luggage options

If you find that the luggage allowance provided is not sufficient for your needs, there are additional luggage options available. Families, in particular, may need to consider these options to accommodate the extra belongings they need to bring along. One option is to invest in packing solutions such as vacuum-sealed bags or collapsible storage containers that can help maximize space. Another option is to utilize the services provided onboard such as laundry facilities to keep clothing clean and fresh during your cruise.

Special considerations for staterooms

When it comes to staterooms, it’s essential to consider the storage space available and how best to organize your luggage to make the most of the space provided. Disney Cruise Line offers various storage options, such as under-bed storage and closet space, to help you keep your stateroom neat and tidy. Utilizing these spaces effectively can make your room feel more spacious and comfortable throughout your cruise.

Restricted items

To ensure the safety and security of all passengers, there are certain items that are prohibited on Disney cruises. It’s important to familiarize yourself with these restricted items to avoid any inconvenience during the boarding process or throughout your cruise. Prohibited items include weapons, illegal drugs, and hazardous materials. Some items may also be restricted in either your carry-on or checked luggage, such as certain types of electronic devices or batteries. It’s always a good idea to check the official guidelines provided by Disney Cruise Line to ensure that you comply with all restrictions.

Excess luggage charges

While Disney Cruise Line does provide a generous luggage allowance, exceeding these limits may result in additional charges. It’s important to keep in mind that excess luggage charges can be quite steep, especially if you haven’t pre-booked additional luggage. The cost of these charges can vary depending on the length of your cruise and the number of extra bags you need to check-in. To minimize the impact on your budget, it’s advisable to pack efficiently and consider shipping some of your belongings ahead of time.

Tips for efficient packing

Efficient packing is key when it comes to making the most of your luggage allowance. By employing some smart packing techniques, you can ensure that you have everything you need while still maximizing space. Creating a packing checklist can help you stay organized and ensure that you don’t forget any essential items. Opting for versatile clothing pieces that can be mixed and matched can reduce the number of outfits you need to bring. Packing cubes or compression bags can also help compress your clothing and save space. Rolling clothes instead of folding them is another technique that can help you maximize your available space.

Shipping luggage ahead

If you find that the luggage allowance provided simply isn’t enough to accommodate all your belongings, you may want to consider shipping some of your luggage ahead of time. This can be particularly useful if you’re traveling with bulky or heavy items such as strollers or sports equipment. Shipping your luggage ahead allows you to travel with greater ease and eliminate the stress of lugging around heavy bags.

In conclusion, understanding the luggage allowance for a Disney Cruise is vital for a smooth and stress-free vacation. By familiarizing yourself with the carry-on and checked luggage policies, as well as any additional options available, you can ensure that you have everything you need while still adhering to the cruise line’s regulations. With efficient packing techniques and consideration for storage space in your stateroom, you can make the most of your luggage allowance and enjoy a comfortable and enjoyable Disney Cruise experience . Remember to always check the official guidelines provided by Disney Cruise Line to stay informed about any changes or updates to the luggage policy. Bon voyage!

Packing Champions: The Dos and Don'ts of your Disney Cruise Line Suitcase

Packing for each vacation is different. When headed to Disney theme parks , there is a particular emphasis on practical things like two sets of comfortable shoes, the right kind of backpack , etc. Spend your time at a Disney Resort like Aulani , and you’ll be tossing up between your favorite swimming costumes and cover-ups. But when it comes to packing for your Disney Cruise Line vacation, you might want to keep a few other things in mind.

Cruise ships are notorious for being short on space in the standard-size staterooms , so make sure that you take anything out of your bag that is going to take up prime living space in your room. Skip the beach towels, drones, sporting equipment, bulky toys, and unnecessary appliances such as a hairdryer (one is provided for you), straighteners, coolers, or any of those cooking appliances that some of you may have been tempted to take to Walt Disney World. Another thing you want to leave at home are any weapons. I can’t believe I just had to actually write that, but nonetheless, it is essential. Guns, knives, swords, throwing stars, whatever weapons may usually accompany you on a trip, leave them at home.

disney cruise luggage rules

Come to think of it, the list of things you can’t take on board is longer than the list of things you should take with you. There is a lengthy list of prohibited items that you should consult before closing up your bag. A few examples of these are homemade or precooked perishables, power boards/power strips, pool toys, boards, inflatables, balloons, kites, candles, inflatable mattresses, or any shoes with built-in wheels.

Photo by ben o'bro on Unsplash

Something you want to consider is the attire reccomendations of the restaurants or bars on board. Some may require men to wear dress pants and a collared shirt, and others may require smart casual attire for women. You will want to be sure that you pack appropriate footwear since flip-flops/thongs ( yes, we call them thongs in Australia! ) might not be allowed in some of the dining venues on the Disney ships.

Here are some of the classic wardrobe no-nos that you might come across in your ship’s more elegant dining locations: tank tops, swimsuits, swimsuit cover-ups, shorts, hats, cut-offs, torn clothing, t-shirts with offensive language and/or graphics, flip-flops or tennis shoes and jeans.

Make sure that you have a few pieces in your DCL collection that will tick all the boxes and can be mixed & matched for a few different looks, along with at least one decent pair of dress shoes.

Your vessel may also plan to host a themed night or two, so make sure that you have everything you need to blow the competition away with your incredible costume contribution. Check in ahead of time to know what to take with you for those special evenings and photo ops.

DCL Bahamas

Disney Cruise Line is actually one of the few cruise lines that will allow you to bring your own alcohol on board, though there are limitations. Guests over 21 years of age can bring aboard up to two bottles (limited to 750mls each) of wine or champagne or up to 6 beers (limited to 12 ounces each). They will need to be stored in your carry-on baggage; if found in your checked luggage, they will be removed and stored until the end of the cruise. Spirits are not allowed. If you would like to enjoy your alcoholic beverage from home at dinner, be prepared to pay a $25 corkage fee per bottle.

There are three additional items that you should always have in your bag when boarding a cruise :

  • Antibacterial wipes are essential because you never know when you will need to clean up a mess, wipe down surfaces, or scrub chocolate off the faces of your children just in time for the family photo. Wipes can often save the day, so always bring a large packet for the room and a pocket-size pack to carry with you.
  • Clothespins can offer many different uses ranging from effectively drying everyone’s swimwear in the bathroom to holding your towel in place on the deck chair by the pool.
  • Always take a deck of cards as they can be handy to have on just about any vacation. Your whole family can play any number of games to pass the time, or one person can use them to make a house of cards if in need of some solo time out. If you have travel delays, a deck of Uno cards can be a gift from above and can be played anywhere quickly and quietly.

Be sure to check the restrictions and recommendations from Disney Cruise Line for your specific route. Individual ships and destinations have special requirements that will need to be adhered to.

Enjoy experiencing Disney from the seas!

10 Things to Pack in Your Carry-On for Your Disney Cruise

Let’s talk packing for your Disney Cruise !  When you arrive at the port, you will drop off your big luggage with the porters, and you won’t see it again until it appears outside your stateroom door several hours later.  With your luggage taken care of, you can also hand carry as much as you want onto the ship, it just has to fit on the belt to go through the x-ray scanner.  Don’t carry too much though. Your room won’t be ready until 1:30 pm, so you’re stuck with whatever you carried on until then.  So, what exactly should you carry on?  I have suggestions below.  Ten of them, of course.

disney cruise luggage rules

2. Documents – Depending on the cruise, and what document type you select, Disney will mail you documents beforehand. It may be a super cute booklet about your cruise that you will keep forever, for no rational reason whatsoever, or it may be just a few sheets of paper about your cruise. Bring them! It’s not the end of the world if you forget them, we all know you won’t be the first person to forget them, but at many ports, the person admitting you to the building asks to see them.  It will speed things along if you have them.

3. Swim Gear – Put your swimsuit in your carry-on, or at least put your children’s swimsuits in your carry-on. Once your kids lay eyes on those pools and splash zones, they’re going to want to get wet.  That means they probably do not have the patience to wait until your luggage shows up a few hours later.  Bring your swimsuits with you, and voila – no waiting!  There are several bathrooms out on the pool deck where you can change, and there are towels on the pool deck for you to use.  Swimming may also require you to bring a few other things like sunscreen, a waterproof case for your phone, or the usual swimming accoutrements your family uses.

disney cruise luggage rules

5. Alcohol – Disney has restrictions on how much alcohol you can bring on board, but you can bring some. Each adult can bring two (unopened) bottles of wine or champagne, or a six-pack of beer. If you imbibe, that’s good news for you!  Cheap(er) alcohol!  You cannot pack it in your suitcase, however–it must be in a carry-on.  FYI, you can bring the same amount on at each port of call, so if you want to replenish in port, go for it.

6. Water – If you prefer a certain kind of bottled water that Disney doesn’t carry, or just flat out don’t want to pay Disney’s prices, you can bring on as much as you want. You are only limited by what you can carry around with you (and what fits through the x-ray machine)! You can’t put it in your checked luggage, so you will have to place it in your carry-on or just flat out carry it.  Sometimes porters will offer to slap a room tag on your case of water and deliver it to your room, but you can’t count on it!

disney cruise luggage rules

8. Door Magnets – It’s never too early to decorate your door. And let’s face it, door magnets don’t take up much room in your suitcase. Well, most don’t.  I’ve seen some crazy door decorations on board!  I do like to put mine in my carry-on and put them up right away.  If you have kids that are roaming the ship, it makes it easier for them to find your stateroom, not to mention, they’re just festive.

9. Valuables – I have never, ever had anything stolen from my bags, but it’s still a good idea to keep valuables with you. Some electronics especially, like laptops, aren’t really made to be thrown around in a suitcase. And my word, the thought of someone dropping a bag with my camera in it gives me heart palpitations.  So, keep them with you!  I keep a small rolling bag with me full of those kinds of things.

10. Dinner Clothes – There’s a chance you won’t have your clothes from your checked luggage before dinner, or before that pre-dinner activity you don’t want to miss. IF you want to change for dinner, make sure you put your clothes in a carry-on. The first night on board will almost certainly be cruise-casual, so you’re safe to wear what you boarded in (assuming it wasn’t a swimsuit or tank top) if you are having dinner in one of the main dining rooms.  If, however, you are dining in Palo or Remy, boarding clothes just won’t do!  Well, unless your boarding clothes are very different than mine…

Bonus – Coke Zero!   Okay, it doesn’t have to be Coke Zero, and most of the ships have Coke Zero on tap now!  Woohoo!  But if Disney doesn’t carry your preferred brand of soda, you are welcome to carry as much as you want on with you (again, you have to get it through the x-ray machine).  And as with other drinks, they must be in your carry-on. Do not put them in your checked bag.  But really, is putting cans of soda in a bag that’s going to be thrown around a good idea anyway?  I’m thinking no.

How about you?  Is there anything else you pack in your carry-on?  Share with us!

I may have missed it but I see it keeps saying it must fit in the x-ray machine, do you know the max. size of a carry on that will fit in the x-ray machine at the port? Thank you!

Hmm. Good question! I’ve never seen measurements! It’s a pretty big size though! I’ve seen some big things go through!

I haven’t been on a Disney cruise yet, but have done a lot of traveling. I would include a small toiletries bag in my carry-on. As you mentioned Tammy, it could be hours before seeing any checked luggage. So a small bag of basic toiletries and preferred skincare products are a must if wanting to freshen up once on board.

Excellent tip, Kelly!

If you’re swimming before your room is open, does your carry-on luggage just hangout at the pool?

Mine would! I would put it in a chair where I could see it and be fine. But your room will be open by 1:30. So dropping off carry-ons there isn’t too hard! The main reason to bring swimsuits in your carry-on, is that your luggage may not be there for a few hours after that.

This was my very first cruise with 7 women. When I checked in they told me that1st time cruiser did not get Lanyards. I even told them that I would pay for one. They came back and told me that they could lose their job if they did.

Very disappointed.

Just want your company to train your employees the correct way and not to lie to the customers.

Coke Zero. Is it just the Fantasy that doesn’t have it in the soda fountains?

The Dream still doesn’t have it on tap either unless it was added very recently! I would LOVE to be wrong on that! 🙂

How Much Luggage Can You Take on a Disney Cruise?

By Leigh Caldwell 1 Comment

If you’re headed out on your first Disney Cruise soon, you probably have a lot of questions about packing!

disney cruise luggage rules

If you’re wondering about dress codes on Disney Cruises, we’ve got all the info you need right here . But beyond what kinds of clothes to pack, you might also be wondering how much you can pack.

So today, we’re answering your questions about just how much luggage you can take aboard your Disney Cruise.

So, how much luggage can you take on board? Disney Cruise Line allows for 2 suitcases, one carry-on, and one personal item per person (sounds familiar, right — kinda like flying?). You will check the suitcases with a porter at the port, and they will be delivered to your stateroom. You will be responsible for carrying your carry-on bags and personal items onto the ship. You will receive two luggage tags per person from Disney Cruise Line in advance of your cruise, and those should go onto your suitcases.

You can usually go to your stateroom a short time after boarding, and take drop your carry-ons off there. But the delivery of your suitcases to your stateroom can take a few hours. So, it’s important to bring medication, electronic devices, and anything else you may need right away in your carry-on (again, just like at the airport). Many cruise passengers also pack a swimsuit in their carry-on, since the pools will often open before your luggage arrives in your stateroom.

disney cruise luggage rules

Disney Wish at Castaway Cay

Now … some REAL TALK. Just because you can bring two suitcases per person on a Disney Cruise doesn’t mean you SHOULD. Two suitcases is a whole lotta clothes — it’s pretty likely more clothes than you will need. If you plan to spend most of your days on the ship at the pool and off the ship at the beach, you’re going to need less changes of clothes than you probably think. Storage space will be limited in your stateroom, so even if you have a tendency to overpack on most trips, edit your suitcase(s) well for this one!

If you put your suitcases inside of each other you can store them all under your bed… also, from personal experience…. if you are bringing your toothbrush charger, pack it in your carry on. I had it in our suitcase and I had to go all the way down to the first deck and into the do not area section to claim our suitcase and prove it didn’t have a prohibited item. On their scanners they thought my toothbrush charger was a strip cord. I will remember that for next time. It was a hassle trying to get down there, find someone to help me and unpack and repack the suitcase to prove there wasn’t a strip cord hidden inside, all while I was supposed to be getting to the muster drill.

LUGGAGE ALLOWANCE

Luggage permitted on Disney Cruises: Size and weight regulations on board

What’s the baggage allowance on a Disney cruise? Generally speaking, and similarly to other cruise lines, the Disney Cruise luggage limit and size restriction is more generous than airlines or bus companies’ policies. We have prepared a summary of the luggage allowance and Disney Cruise carry-on luggage policy.

Luggage allowance on a Disney Cruise:

  • Two suitcases per person onboard: no more than 50 lbs (approx. 23 kg). This must be checked luggage.
  • Disney Cruise carry-on luggage: one per guest which cannot exceed 22″ wide, 14″ high and 9″ deep (approx. 55 x 35 x 23 cm)
  • One personal item per guest: like a handbag or small backpack.

FORBIDDEN ITEMS

Disney Cruises luggage restrictions: forbidden items

In addition to the Disney Cruise line luggage limit , you will also have to comply with their forbidden items policy. Due to the nature of sea travelling and the health and security risks involved, you may find the list of forbidden luggage in a Disney Cruise a bit daunting. Please note, if you want to board with items not allowed by the Disney Cruise luggage rules crew will seize or even destroy your items before boarding.

Items not allowed by the Disney Cruises luggage rules:

  • Appliances with open flames or heat sources : such as candles, kettles or bottle and food warmers. Certain types of baby bottle warmers are available onboard.
  • Firearms and ammunition: including realistic replicas or antiques, including toy guns for Costume nights. However, the forbidden luggage Disney Cruise policy accepts toy weapons (such as lightsabers).
  • Sharp objects: razor blades and small grooming scissors are allowed.
  • CBD Oil: CBD and other CBD products are forbidden and will not be returned.
  • Hoverboards
  • Electrical extension cords
  • Ballons or kites
  • Floating devices including toy helicopters and drones.
  • Wheeled recreational equipment and transport devices.
  • Diving equipment and aquatic items.
  • Alcohol : you can read more about the Disney Cruises alcohol policy on the FAQ.

Ship you Disney Cruise line luggage with Eurosender

As with most cruise lines, the luggage allowance on Disney Cruises is relatively generous when it comes to size and weight. However, the list of forbidden luggage items on a Disney Cruise line is quite extensive. If you are travelling with children or service animals or are planning a longer trip the amount of luggage permitted on Disney Cruises may not be enough. Don’t be limited by the Disney Cruise luggage restrictions! Get your luggage delivered to or from any Port Adventure locations. Enjoy your holiday to the max and stop worrying about the luggage allowance on your Disney Cruise.

Alcohol on Disney Cruise Ships: Everything you need to know

P eople take cruises for lots of different reasons. Sometimes they want an easy way to travel to new destinations. Sometimes they just want a vacation. And sometimes that vacation may or may not include alcohol. Since Disney Cruise line does things a little differently than other cruise lines when it comes to drinking, it can be a little confusing. Here’s everything you need to know about alcohol on Disney Cruise Ships!

Disney Cruise Line Does Not Have Drink Packages

First and foremost: Disney Cruise Line does not offer drink packages. Whether you’re a seasoned cruiser, or a newbie, the words Drink Packages are something you’ve likely heard before. Disney does not offer any type of drink package. Most likely because they are generally considered a family cruise. And they probably don’t want to earn the reputation some cruise lines have as being party boats. Plus generally, it makes for less issues overall when most of your guests are at least slightly sober.

They do sell alcohol though, and at plenty of places around the ship. You just have to pay for each drink separately. Drinking on a Disney Cruise can get expensive. So we are going to share everything you need to know about alcohol on a Disney Cruise so you can plan accordingly if you choose to drink.

You can bring your own alcohol on a Disney Cruise

Disney Cruise Line guests can bring up to two bottles of unopened wine or champagne or 6 beers onboard. You must be 21 years or older to do this. And it must be packed in your carryon luggage. Under no circumstances should you pack this in your checked luggage- they’ll take it out and you won’t be reimbursed for it.

Being able to bring your own alcohol onboard means you can save a good chunk of money on drinks. Especially if you’re someone who has a specific type of wine or beer you like. Or if you’re someone who likes to start your day with mimosas. Just grab some orange juice from the upper decks and voila!

You can read Disney’s full alcohol policy here .

Save money on alcohol with Happy Hour Specials on Disney Cruise

In recent years, many of Disney’s ships have started offering Happy Hour Specials. Now these are never guaranteed, but on our last 3 Disney Cruises, we saw them pretty often. You can generally expect to save anywhere from 30-50% off drinks during happy hour on a Disneycruise, so this can save you a good amount of cash. You can find these deals in the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App, and sometimes they’ll also announce them on the morning show if you watch that in your stateroom.

The Drink of the Day will cost you just $5

Disney offers a drink of the day each day you’re onboard. And they just cost $5. Many times, these drinks are a little “watered down” if you will, so they aren’t going to be top shelf or anything like that. But if you’re just looking for a drink without blowing the budget, they’re a good option. The drink changes each day, so you can try something new each time. They also offer a non-alcoholic drink each day as well, so it’s a great way o save money on drinks for everyone.

And the best part is that you can also get the drink of the day on Castaway Cay . So if sitting on the beach with a drink in hand is on your Disney Cruise Vacation to do list, you can also enjoy discounted adult beverages here. You can find the drink of the day in the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App by scrolling all the way to the bottom of the home page. And you’ll find it featured there.

The Refillable Beer Mug can save you money

If you’re a beer drinker who plans to drink beer on your Disney Cruise, you should consider the refillable beer mug. You can buy this from the onboard gifts and amenities page before your cruise, or you can buy it once onboard. The refillable mug is 21 ounces, and it allows you to get refills for the price of a 16 oz. This includes beers and hard ciders onboard. And if you don’t want to lug around the hefty 21 oz glass, you can also ask the bartender to exchange it for a token that you can redeem next time you’d like a refill. This is a great way to save money if you plan to drink beer or hard cider onboard.

The Drinking Age is (sort of) different overseas on a Disney Cruise

Sailing out of ports in Europe and Australia can be a little different than sailing from the US. If you’re sailing from a port in Europe or Australia (or any international port for that matter), the drinking age is flexible. By that, I mean technically, Disney Cruise Line’s drinking age is always 21. But when sailing from an international port with a different drinking age, guests can sign a waiver to be allowed to drink at the age of 18. This usually does need to be signed by a parent or guardian. And comes with a few restrictions.

Generally, the parent or guardian needs to be with the young adult who wants the alcohol. And they do make it very clear that they can stop serving you at any time. The exception to this is when sailing out of Australia and New Zealand, guests who are 18-21 don’t need parental consent to purchase or drink alcohol.

You can bring alcohol onboard from ports on a Disney Cruise

Much like the initial boarding process, guests can bring up to 2 bottles of unopened wine or champagne or 6 beers from each port of call. And yes, you can drink it onboard! Again you must be either 21, or 18 if sailing out of the Australian ports. The only thing to note here is that while you are allowed to purchase liquor at ports of call, you cannot consume it onboard. You actually have to turn it in when you get back onboard and they’ll hold onto it until your journey is over. So feel free to buy duty free rum in the Caribbean. Just know you’ll have to save it until you get home.

Your Stateroom Host can lend you a bottle opener if you don’t have one

Maybe you just forgot. Or maybe you didn’t even think of it! But if you’re bringing your own alcohol onboard, you’ll likely want a bottle opener or corkscrew for your adult beverages. If you forgot one though, that’s ok! Your stateroom host can lend you a bottle opener or corkscrew so you can enjoy your drinks in your room.

You can order alcoholic drinks to be delivered to your room before your cruise

Don’t want to deal with bringing alcohol onboard? Though Disney Cruise Line doesn’t offer drink packages, they do offer the opportunity to order select drinks from their onboard gifts and amenities page before your cruise that will have your drinks waiting for you in your stateroom when you board. You can choose from beer, wine, champagne and even non-alcoholic champagne. And you can also get bottled water while you’re there too.

Hopefully this post has helped clear up any confusion you may have had about alcohol on a Disney Cruise!

The City of Juneau Just Implemented Restrictions on Cruise Ships — Here’s Why

The new rule will go into effect in 2026.

disney cruise luggage rules

The Alaskan city of Juneau will cap cruise ship visitors in the coming years in an effort to combat overtourism in the popular state capital.

The City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) reached an agreement with cruise lines to establish limits of 16,000 lower berths per day on Sundays through Fridays and a limit of 12,000 lower berths per day on Saturdays, according to the city . The new agreement will go into effect during the 2026 Alaska cruise season .

Lower berths essentially refer to passenger capacity on a ship.

“The cruise industry is vital to our local economy, and we need to improve our infrastructure and grow our tour capacity to create a great guest experience and reduce impacts on residents,” Juneau Visitor Industry Director Alexandra Pierce said in a statement. “With this agreement, we are committing to a cap to manage our busiest days and to meet annually to ensure that our visitor numbers remain sustainable.”

The agreement was signed by major cruise lines that stop in the city, including Carnival Corporation, Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian Cruise Line.

Renée Limoge Reeve, the vice president of government and community relations at the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), said the agreement “reflects the industry’s ongoing commitment to work with CBJ and the residents of Juneau to deliver win-win partnerships.”

This isn’t the first time the city has implemented rules to limit crowds. Last year, the city passed a similar measure limiting large ships to a maximum of five ships on the same day. That agreement went into effect this year.

Juneau also isn’t alone in placing restrictions on cruise ships. In 2022, the town of Bar Harbor, Maine, voted to limit disembarking passengers to no more than 1,000 people each day; and last year, the California city of Monterey effectively banned cruise ships by voting to terminate city services for them.
