You've seen it in history books, on postcards, and in social media posts. But now, you've made your way to India, and you finally have the chance to see this bucket list destination in real life.

The magnificent structure dates back to the 17th century. Mughal emperor Shah Jahan was heartbroken after his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, passed away during childbirth, and decided to pay tribute to her with a white mausoleum. Construction took more than 20 years to complete and required the manpower of around 20,000 laborers.

There's never a bad time to see the Taj Mahal, but it's worth getting here early–the building seems to radiate at sunrise. Tourists can enter the UNESCO World Heritage Site via the west and east gates. Once inside, explore the ornamental gardens, which feature calming water features that reflect the Taj. Then, head inside the Taj itself and admire its perfect symmetry and white marble with elaborate floral cavings and semiprecious stone inlays.

Sightseeing around the Taj Mahal complex continues at the Kau Ban Mosque , west of the Taj, and the Jawab , a building intended to mirror the mosque and preserve symmetry on the main structure's eastern side.

The Taj Mahal isn't the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Agra–the city is also home to Agra Fort, a centuries-old red sandstone fortress that was once the imperial city for a succession of Mughal rulers.

Sightseeing here is like wandering around a city within a city. The most extraordinary building at Agra Fort is Jahangir Mahal , a massive palace that blends stunning Hindu-inspired features (like overhanging enclosed balconies) with Central Asian architectural elements (such as the signature pointed arches). Inside, tourists can see the gilded central court where royal women once passed their days.

Tourists can also check out a range of other noteworthy structures, including Anguri Bagh (a courtyard with puzzle piece-like outlines of gardens around water channels), Khas Mahal (a palace with pavilions made of white marble and red sandstone), Musamman Burj (an octagonal tower with intricate marble inlay work), and Diwan-i-Khas (a gathering hall featuring a pair of black and white marble thrones).

With so much to see, Agra Fort will require at least a few hours on your itinerary. It makes for a great afternoon stop after a morning at the Taj Mahal.

On the banks of the Yamuna River sits another one of Agra's exquisite structures: Itimad-ud-Daulah's Tomb. The mausoleum contains the remains of Mirza Ghiyas Beg, a Persian official who served the Mughal empire, as well as his wife.

Legend has it that this jewelry box-like tomb was actually the inspiration for the Taj Mahal , earning it the nickname "Baby Taj." The red sandstone and marble structure features 13-meter-high hexagonal towers on each corner.

The most noteworthy thing about this attraction, though, is that it was the first structure to use pietra dura , the iconic Indian inlay technique that uses semiprecious stones to create decorative floral designs in marble. You'll see exquisite geometric patterns, depictions of vases and cups, and delicate flower bouquets from floor to ceiling of the graceful structure–reminiscent of those on the Taj Mahal.

Despite its beauty, Itimad-ud-Daulah's Tomb gets far fewer visitors than other attractions around Agra, making it an ideal place to appreciate the lovely features without the crowds.

The Taj Mahal almost seems to extend across the Yamuna River at Mehtab Bagh (Moonlight Garden), a square garden complex measuring 300 meters on each side. It's the only remaining park in a series of nearly a dozen Mughal-built gardens in the area.

The park has some pretty flowering trees and bushes–a stark improvement from its state in the mid-1990s, when the site was just a mound of sand. The Archeological Survey of India is hard at work restoring Mehtab Bagh and has already planted Mughal-era plants to help bring the site back to its original glory.

The landscape aligns perfectly with the gardens of the Taj, making it one of the best places in Agra to get a view (or a photo) of the stunning structure–especially at sunset. Outside of the gates to the complex, you can shop for Taj Mahal trinkets and other souvenirs from sellers in the area.

The graceful attractions around Agra will make any tourist fall in love with marble inlay. If you find yourself eager to take a piece of this craftsmanship home with you, head to Subhash Emporium. The boutique has a decades-strong reputation as the go-to place to shop for stone handicrafts in Agra.

Inside, you'll find tons of travel-friendly marble inlay souvenirs, like floral coaster sets, animal statuettes, small boxes, and candle holders. The store also sells larger items, like lamps, tabletops, and carved-marble trays, that it can ship directly to your home.

Even if you don't want to shop, it's worth swinging by Subhash Emporium for its captivating demonstrations –one of the top things to do in Agra. The experienced craftspeople here will show you the precise art of inlaying small pieces of polished stone into hard marble–which might make the high prices of these items seem slightly more reasonable.

For nearly 50 years, emperor Akbar the Great ruled the Mughal kingdom, tripling its empire to include most of the northern half of the Indian subcontinent. His remains (along with those of two of his daughters) can be found at what is now one of the most popular tourist attractions in Agra, Akbar's Mausoleum.

The complex features a marvelous sandstone and marble tomb with striking marble inlay in a variety of colors. The structure is surrounded by Mughal gardens that are home to deer, antelope, monkeys, and even a few peacocks.

If you happen to travel with a compass, whip it out at this site. You'll notice that the tomb faces east–a contrast to nearly all other Mughal tombs, which point toward Mecca.

Just an hour's drive from the Taj Mahal , Fatehpur Sikri makes for a worthwhile day trip from Agra. The city, once the capital of the Mughal Empire some 500 years ago, was built by Akbar as a salute to the famous Sufi saint, Shaikh Salim Chishti, who accurately predicted the birth of an heir. Residents abandoned the city not long after it was built, when water supplies ran too low.

Tourists can now explore the well-preserved remains of this red sandstone ghost town, still surrounded by a fortification wall. Check out the Jama Masjid , a mosque and one of the first buildings finished in the city. Then, explore the three palaces , built for each one of Akbar's wives. They combine a variety of religious-inspired architectural styles that honor the women's individual spiritualities.

Finally, get off the beaten path and stroll to Hiran Minar , a circular spiked tower covered with stone elephant tusks, atop which Akbar himself supposedly gazed at wildlife.

Dig in deeper to this incredible site with a visit to the Archaeological Museum , near the Diwan-i-Am main gate. It contains four galleries filled with treasures from the Mughal era and beyond, including grey ware pot shreds, terra-cotta lamps, mini human heads in stone, jewelry molds, and much more.

Between its reverence for cows and its temples dedicated to specific creatures, India has a fascinating relationship with animals. But not every tradition has been kind to four-legged creatures. Case in point: Dancing sloth bears.

For thousands of years, India's Kalandar community has poached sloth bear cubs, driven a red hot poker and coarse rope through their muzzles and yanked on the string to force them to put on painful "performances" for a paying audience. India prohibited the cruel practice in 1972. However, the mistreatment continued–leaving animal rights activists, such as Wildlife SOS , to save the victimized bears.

You can see around 130 of these rescued dancing bears playing, foraging, and climbing trees at Agra Bear Rescue Facility. Visits to the center include a tour guided by an expert who can shed light on India's vanishing wildlife and conservation efforts. It's an insightful experience, and all proceeds go toward rehabilitation efforts.

Sloth bears aren't the only focus for Wildlife SOS –the animal protection organization also takes care of abused elephants at a sanctuary just 30 kilometers outside of Agra. On tours of the facility, you can see more than 20 rescued elephants that were forced to work in harsh conditions. Lucky tourists may even be invited to help prepare lunch for the tusked mammals.

While you will definitely have other opportunities to interact with elephants on your trip to India, visiting the Elephant Conservation and Care Center is by far one of the most ethical (and fulfilling) ways to get up close to these special creatures.

For an authentic look at the life of Agra's present-day residents, take an organized walking tour around the Old City. The excursion teaches tourists about Agra's architecture, history, culture, and street food as they wander around the neighborhood.

You'll get the chance to see what everyday life is like for Agra locals, learn where to go for the best views of the Taj Mahal, and stop by the bustling wholesale spice market for an explosion of color and aroma. Mughals may have spread Islam throughout this part of India, but the region around Agra is also home to a devout Sikh community. Many of them make pilgrimages to Gurudwara Guru ka Tal, a spiritual center near Agra.

This peaceful place was built in the 17th century, and modern-day tourists can see the eight towers that remain of the structure's original dozen. Tourists can also enjoy free meals from the community kitchen–perfect for refueling before a trip back to the city.

The Kalakriti Cultural & Convention Center is on a mission to deepen tourists' appreciation of Indian art and culture. Every evening at 6:30pm, it puts on a performance of "Mohabbat-the-Taj: The Saga of Love," a dramatic musical that brings the legendary love story of the Taj Mahal to life. Expect Bollywood-inspired dance and song throughout the hour-long show. Afterward, head to the center's handicrafts showroom to shop for intricately designed marble inlay souvenirs and other treasures.

One of India's largest mosques can be found in the historic core of Agra, just across from the Agra Fort . Still the city's principal mosque, the Jama Masjid was built during the 17th century under the reign of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. The striking red sandstone structure stands atop a platform, and features remarkable white marble inlay with blue-washed ceilings and walls. Throughout the interior, tourists can see graceful inlaid panels similar to those at the Taj Mahal.

The Friday prayer service draws massive crowds to the Jama Masjid, but outside of that time, it's relatively empty. The mosque encourages tourists to observe silence when visiting this sacred place.

After visiting Itimad-ud-Daulah's Tomb , head one kilometer north to see Chini ka Rauza, a funerary monument that houses the tomb of Afzal Khan Shirazi, who served as the prime minister for Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan.

While not nearly as well preserved as other attractions in Agra, the Indo-Persian structure is noteworthy for being the first monument to feature chini, a distinctive decoration made from turquoise, yellow, green, and orange glazed tiles. As the name of the building suggests, each of its tiles were imported from China–an impressive feat during the 17th century, when this monument was constructed. Step inside Chini ka Rauza to see an array of detailed paintings and Islamic inscriptions.

After visiting the Chini ka Rauza, you can take a 10-minute walk south to see the ruins of the Tomb of Sultan Parwiz , who was the brother of Shah Jahan.

Currency: Indian Rupee (INR)

Language: Hindi and English are widely spoken and understood. Some locals can speak English but not read it. However, Indians are quite visual and use gestures, so communication is not difficult.

Weather: The weather varies all year round in Delhi. Between October – February it can get chilly. Between March – September its very hot.

Getting Around: Tuk-tuks (also known as auto rickshaws) are the most common and cheapest taxis in Delhi. The New Delhi Metro is very clean, modern and easy to use. Uber and Ola are the two ride-hailing services in the country. They cost more than tuk-tuks but are still cheap (plus they are air-conditioned cars and more comfortable). Buses – they are the cheapest way of getting around, costing pennies (around INR 10-20).

Car: India drives on the left and the roads are fairly easy to navigate. You can hire a rental car here .

What to wear: In the winter months it’s cold, so wrap up warm. In Spring and Summer, it’s hot. So typical tourist attire will do. However, always cover up when visiting holy places (temples, mosques, shrines etc.)

The historic Old Town of Delhi is a fantastic place to start on your travels in India.

Built by the Mughals centuries ago, Old Delhi was the centre of luxury and commerce at the height of the Mughal Empire.

It has since become very congested and overrun with poverty, but don’t let that bother you – in fact, the Old Town is rich with history, culture, and iconic landmarks, including the Red Fort. It is indeed thought of by the locals to be the “Real India”.

The Red Fort

The enormous Red Fort complex represents the heart of Old Delhi. Once the official residence of the Mughal Emperor, it remains a stunning structure well worth visiting.

The sprawling bazaars of Old Delhi gives the perfect opportunity to lose yourself in authentic Indian culture for an afternoon well spent and an unforgettable experience.

Authentic Indian food is among the highlights of any day in India, particularly the street food. Whether its breakfast, lunch or dinner, there’s a plethora of different bites and dishes. I enjoyed some delicious chaat, and momos with spicy sauce is an absolute must.

Day 2: Qutab Minar & Lotus Temple

Discover Delhi’s historic Qutab Minar, ancient Chattarpur temple complex, and the iconic Lotus Temple

The Qutub Minar

Commissioned by the Delhi Sultanate in 1200 AD and standing at 73 metres tall, the Qutub Minar is the tallest brick structure in the world. The landmark, along with the ancient and medieval monuments surrounding it, form the Qutab Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

This landmark is perhaps the most famous attraction in the city, and one of the best things to do in Delhi . So expect it to get busy here during the daytime.

Start your morning early here to beat the crowds. This is a great opportunity to snap some truly insta-worthy shots while it’s quiet.

Word Of Advice: As with any tourist hotspot – be wary of thieves. My Delhi-based friend who guided me around the complex, discovered that her bag was cut open. Always keep an eye on your belongings especially if carrying a bag of softer material, as thieves will cut them open and steal the contents, without you even realising.

Chattarpur Temple Complex

From Qutub Minar head right down to the south of the city and stroll around the enormous Chattarpur Temple complex.

Here you can take in the sights of the stunning Hindu architecture and landmarks, that includes the vast Hindu temple itself, the Trident of Shiva, and the absolutely HUGE Statue of the Hindu god Hanuman.

This photo below shows just how ENORMOUS the statue of Hanuman is!

For me, this temple complex was a major highlight of New Delhi. Not just because its relatively quiet and unknown to many tourists, but because of the sheer size and beauty of the architecture and monuments.

Lunch at Hauz Khas Village

After a long morning taking some excellent snaps, catch the 516 bus (or hail a taxi) to the charming Hauz Khas Village – a quaint little gem in southern Delhi.

Not a well known spot for tourists, this is a fantastic place to grab some lunch from one of the many cafes and restaurants there.

It’s also a good opportunity to browse the small shops, stroll the pleasant gardens, and view the cluster of magnificent medieval buildings set around the reservoir.

The Lotus Temple

The magnificent Lotus Temple is an enormous structure that’s won numerous architectural awards due to it’s unique, marble-clad ‘petals’ that makes the temple look like a giant Lotus flower. In 2001 a CNN report referred to it as the most visited building in the world! No wonder it’s among the hottest attractions in Delhi.

Did you know: The Lotus Temple is the only structure of faith in Asia. Built in 1986, it is Asia’s pivot for the Bahai community and is open to all, regardless of religion or background.

Location: Bahapur, Kalkaji, New Delhi, Delhi, India Getting there: Lotus Temple is close to the Kalkaji Mandir metro station (on the Violet line), and right next to the Kalkaji Park. Admission: Free Opening times: 9am-7pm (summer), 9am-5:30pm (winter)

End your second day by making your way to Khan Market, Deli’s largest retail shopping centre that offers designer footwear, trendy clothes, electronics, music and hardware. It also has a host of hip cafes and international eateries (if you are looking for something different).

Day 3: India Gate & Raj Ghat

The Rajpath, Connaught Place, and Gandhi’s Memorial Place

India Gate & President’s House

India Gate is a large war memorial similar in design to Paris’ Arc de Triomphe, that pays homage to the Indian volunteers who gave their lives fighting for the British Empire in the First and Second World Wars. Over 2.5 million Indian soldiers served alongside British and Commonwealth forces on the Battlefields of Europe and campaigns in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

Start your third day at monument originally known as the All India War Memorial, in the early morning – the best time to witness this majestic landmark in the golden hours while it’s serene and quiet.

From the monument, walk up the Rajpath to the Rashtrapati Bhavan (aka the President’s House). On the right you’ll spot Parliament House. The Rajpath is where the annual Republic Day Parades take place in January.

Raj Ghat: Gandhi’s Memorial

The site of the cremation and the simple marble memorial dedicated to the ‘father of the nation’ Mahatma Gandhi. As a sign of respect, visitors are required to take off their shoes before approaching the memorial.

If you’ve still time, the Mahatma Gandhi Museum is just across the road, for those curious about the life of Gandhi and the birth of modern Indian Republic.

Getting there: The place is accessible by buses 331 and 753. The nearest Metro Station is the Chandni Chowk on the Yellow line. A dmission: Free Opening times: 6:30am-6pm, 9:30am-5:30pm (Mahatma Gandhi Museum)

Connaught Place

An intriguing cross between a Victorian arcade, a bazaar and a shopping mall, Connaught Place is a hugely popular shopping spot.

However if this is not really your thing, there is always the A-Class movie theatres to relax and catch a movie in, and plenty of bars and cafes to take a sip at.

For something more authentic, the nearby Janpath is among the most famous flea-markets in the city, and still nearer is the Palika Bazaar.

Getting to Agra from Delhi

Since you have now completed your tour of New Delhi, its time to plan your journey to Agra, and make the most of a full day there.

What is the best way to travel from Delhi to Agra?

The best way there from Delhi is by train. How can I go to Agra from Delhi by train? It used to be a long journey, but since 2016, there are now semi high-speed trains that can reach Agra in under two hours. Thus, its possible to visit the Taj Mahal in a day trip from Delhi if you catch the right trains.

How far is Agra from Delhi?

The distance is 233km (145 miles). By a standard train, the journey takes 2 hours and 50 minutes. By car or bus, it takes 3 hours 30 minutes.

Alternatively, you could head straight to Agra on the evening before Day 4, if you’re planning to visit the Taj Mahal at sunrise. 

How can I plan Agra in Delhi?

• The main station in Delhi is New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS), near Paharganj.
• Trains to Agra also leave Delhi from Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station (NZM), about 20 minutes south of New Delhi Station. This station is ideal for those who are staying in south Delhi.
• The main railway station in Agra is Agra Cantonment (AGC).
• Trains are often delayed during the winter (December to March) due to fog.
• Tickets from the Foreign Tourist Quota can be booked in person at the International Tourist Bureau at NDLS. It’s situated upstairs in the main building (Paharganj side) and is open 24/7.
• Word of advice: Don’t believe anyone who tells you that it has moved or is closed because they are trying to scam you .

Best Early Morning Delhi to Agra Trains

Note that these trains are seats only, and not sleepers.

The fastest morning train is the new, non-stop 12050 Gatimaan Express .

 Travelling at a top speed of 160 kilometers per hour, it takes one hour and 40 minutes to reach Agra. The train departs Delhi’s Hazrat Nizamuddin Station at 8.10 a.m. and arrives at AGC at 9.50 a.m.

The fare in 1AC executive class (first class, seated, air conditioned) is 1,495 rupees. CC (chair car, seated, air conditioned) costs 750-993 rupees.

The train runs daily except Friday. There is on-board catering, with both Indian and Continental cuisine served.

The train also has hostesses and multi-media facilities. Its cleanliness, food, and ticket availability and are all excellent. Plus, it’s a punctual train with minimal delays.  See train information .

If you want an early start, the best option is the 12002 New Delhi Habibganj Shatabdi Express .  This train has one stop.

It departs NDLS at 6 a.m. and arrives at AGC at 7.57 a.m.

Word of Advice: Stay Vigilant and Beware of Scams

When arriving at Agra station, be prepared to be accosted by beggars and touts. Touts operate in sophisticated gangs that have counterparts in other cities who identify potential targets at railway stations.

At the Taj Mahal, the touts commonly claim to be guides or taxi drivers, and use ploys such as free taxi rides or the promise of heavy discounts. There are 24 hour official prepaid auto rickshaw and taxi booths just outside AGC station. Use them to avoid much hassle.

Day 4: Agra

Make the most of your experience at India’s most iconic landmark with a Delhi to Agra trip plan.

Most tourists come to Agra for one thing only: The Taj Mahal of course. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of the World, its easy to see why.

So, how do I plan a trip to Taj Mahal?

From Agra’s main train station, make your way to the landmark by hailing down an auto rickshaw. Outside the station are 24-hour, official prepaid auto rickshaws and taxi booths, use these to avoid any hassle.

Be sure to tell your driver which entry gate you wish to be dropped off at. Otherwise, you’ll be taken to the west gate by default, where expensive camel and horse cart rides wait to take tour groups to the gate.

Upon arrival, you’ll find the queues for the ticket booths. Security is strict here – there are checkpoints around the complex, and your bag will be scanned and searched. Large bags/backpacks aren’t allowed inside. If you are bringing a backpack or a bag, it will take longer. There are luggage storage facilities provided at the entry gates.

Word of advice: the following items aren’t allowed inside the gated complex: phone chargers, iPads, headphones, edibles, tobacco products, lighters, knives, and camera tripods.

Once you’ve got your tickets and passed security, make your way to the the entry gate – which in itself is quite stunning. A huge, Mughal reddish-coloured building with an enormous entrance.

The West gate is mainly used by Indians and is usually the most crowded entrance.

The East gate is more popular with foreign tourists, and is close to well-known hotels. The queues are shorter here, except at sunrise when there are large groups. It’s still by far the best entry point, especially when booking your tickets in advance.

The South gate is the least used gate, close to a busy market area, though it doesn’t open until 8am.

Entrance fees: as of 2023, tickets cost 1,100 rupees for foreigners and 50 rupees for Indians. There is a discount if paying by card.

What’s included: bottle of water, shoe covers, map, bus or golf cart  service to the entry gate. Foreigner tickets allow priority over Indians in the queues.

Opening Hours: 6am to 7pm every day except Fridays. Night viewing is also available during the full moon (and the 2 nights before and after, making a total of 5 nights), from 8:30pm til 12:30pm.

Best time to visit: Earliest is best, shortly after a sunrise when it’s cooler, though it may be busy. Late afternoon for sunset is also a good period.

As you can see, the complex is enormous, and packed. A few hours here feels like a whole day trip, especially when its hot. 

Be sure to go right up to the white marble mausoleum itself and take a look inside (this may cost a little extra).

Once you’re satisfied with this truly once in a lifetime experience, its time to make your way back to the gate, take some extra snaps and admire the views some more. And now you’ll be hungry (and probably a little tired).

There are several restaurants and hotels in the surrounding areas that provide some refreshing drinks and decent meals.

If you’re allowing for one more stop in Agra, its time to head over to its historic Fort.

(Otherwise, if the Taj is the only trip of the day, make your way back to the station for the journey back to Delhi). For peace of mind an overnight stay in Agra might be ideal, though a day trip worked well for me.

Whilst it sits in the shadow of the Taj Mahal when it comes to tourist attractions, its still a worthwhile visit, especially if you’re a history buff.

Built in the 1530s, the Fort was the original residence of the Mughal emperors, before they relocated to Delhi in 1638. The Marathas were the last rulers to occupy the Fort, before it fell into the hands of the British.

Taj Mahal Agra Safety Advice:

As mentioned above: beware of beggars, touts, and selfie-seekers.

Inside the complex, beware of touts posing as photographers. They will appear very friendly and professional, taking your photos on a DSLR, but then demand a whopping 1,200 rupees for the photos. And they may become aggressive if they feel you wasted their time.

Foreigners here, particularly women and children, will get asked to have selfies taken by Indians. This will become bothersome and intrusive, and may spoil your trip. 

As with any major tourist spot, and particularly here, always stay vigilante. Keep your wits about you and keep an eye on your belongings. Learn to be patient with bothersome locals – learn to say no and walk past when approached by touts or selfie-seekers.

Looking back..

A trip to Delhi is totally worthwhile especially as a first phase/destination during a bigger trip travelling around the sub-continent.

It’s a great place to start, and to get used to the culture shock that India may bring to Westerners.

Best time to visit: Between early September to early March is the coolest period, and November to January is quite cold in this northern region of India. In May it gets extremely hot, however July and August are good times to visit, but just be aware of the Monsoon season in August.

Agra, which is located on the Yamuna River’s banks, is a popular tourist destination thanks to its Mughal-era buildings, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, majestic forts, tombs, and vibrant markets.

1. Buland Darwaza

Fatehpur Sikri, which is a part of the Agra district, was formerly a thriving capital of the Mughal Emperor Akbar until 1585 when the city was abandoned because of its proximity to the Rajputana region and a lack of water. The town remained a ghost town for most of the earlier times when the capital was relocated back to Agra. Fatahabad, which comes from the Persian word for triumph, was the previous name for Fatehpur Sikri. The entire palace complex is erected around the grave of the Sufi saint Salim Chishti, in honour of whom Akbar intended to create the city.

The medieval fort known as Agra Fort is located in Agra, India. Until the capital was moved from Agra to Delhi in 1638, it served as the Mughal rulers’ primary home. A UNESCO World Heritage property is the Agra Fort. It is located around 2.5 kilometers northwest of the Taj Mahal, its more well-known sibling structure. A walled city would be a better way to define the fort.

3. Taj Mahal

On the south bank of the Yamuna River in the Indian city of Agra, there is a mausoleum made of ivory-white marble called the Taj Mahal. It was built in 1632 by Shah Jahan, the Mughal emperor who ruled from 1628 to 1658, to contain the tomb of Mumtaz Mahal, his beloved wife. The mausoleum is the focal point of a 17-hectare (42-acre) complex that also contains a mosque and a guest house. The complex is surrounded on three sides by a crenellated wall and is located in formal gardens.

One of the most significant historical sites and a must-see destination in Agra is Sikandra Fort. This richly coloured sandstone building stands out for its ageless architectural beauty and ability to convey the region’s historic past. Akbar’s mausoleum is housed within the fort, which is situated in a location named Sikandra. This imposing fort is surrounded by verdant gardens on all sides and is protected by high walls.

5. Traditional Bazaars

Retail at one of the many city’s retail districts is a necessary part of every trip to Agra. There is a wide range of unique items, extinct handicrafts, and souvenirs to be found at the traditional bazaars. How can we reach the Taj Mahal?(New Delhi to Agra)

Agra, the place that houses the Taj Mahal, lies at a distance of approximately 204 km from the national capital New Delhi. Agra is very well connected to most of the other cities and national capital through rail and road. The most convenient and economical way to reach Agra from Delhi would be to travel by train.

In the following paragraphs I have covered how you can reach Agra by air, road and rail. The railways being my preferred mode of transport.

Agra has an Airport known as Kheria Airport which also operates as a military base. Currently, there are very few flights operating to and from Agra. As mentioned above, the most convenient and economical way to reach Agra from Delhi would be to travel by train.

More than 30 trains run daily between Delhi and Agra.

It is good to make your bookings well in advance to avoid any last minute hassle as these do get crowded during holidays and tourist season.

A seat in Non AC compartment would cost you approx INR 150 to 200 and one in AC compartment would cost approx INR 400 and above depending upon AC class (AC chair/3AC/2AC/1Ac etc) and train type (Shatabdi/ Rajdhani/ Superfast etc).

Best trains between Delhi To Agra

There are many trains running between Agra and Delhi. Delhi has many train stations. New Delhi Railway Station, Nizamuddin Railway Station and Old Delhi Railway station being a few major ones.

• 12002 Bhopal Shatabdi that departs from New Delhi Railway Station at 6 am and arrives at Agra Cantt at 7.57 am in around two hours. It is the best option to take as it is not too early in the morning and it runs everyday of the week.
• 12050 Gatimaan Express departs from Nizamuddin at 8.10 am and arrives at Agra Cantt at 9.50 am taking less than two hours for the journey. This train does not run on Friday.

Other trains that run daily and take between 2 to 3 hours for the journey from Delhi to Agra are as below-

• 22416 AP Express departs from New Delhi Railway Station at 6.25 am and arrives at 9.10 am at Agra Cantt station.
• 12280 Taj Express departs from New Delhi Railway station at 6.45 am and reaches Agra Cantt at 9.40 am
• 12618 MNGLA LKSDP Express departs from Nizamuddin Railway station at 9.15 am and reaches Agra Cantt at 12.05 pm.
• 12626 Kerala Express departs from New Delhi Railway Station at 11.25 am and arrives at Agra Cantt station at 2.05 pm
• 12191 NZM JBP SUP EXP departs from Nizamuddin at 2.20 pm and arrives at Agra Cantt at 4.57 pm.
• 12780 Goa Express departs from Nizamuddin at 3.00 pm and arrives at Agra Cantt Railway Station at 5.30 pm
• 12724 Telangana Express departs from New Delhi Railway station at 5.25 pm and arrives at Agra Cantt at 8.11 pm
• 22182 NZM JBP SF EXP departs from Nizamuddin at 5.50 pm and reaches Agra Cantt at 8.28 pm

Along with the above mentioned, there are many more trains running between these two stations but these are the trains that start and arrive at a very convenient time and are fast.

How to go to Taj Mahal from Agra Railway Station

From Railway station one can book a cab, hire a prepaid or normal taxi to Taj Mahal. It is advisable to book Ola, Uber or a prepaid taxi else visitors(especially foreigners) are heckled by the taxi drivers and auto-rickshaw drivers. Agra Cantt is the main Railway Station in Agra besides Agra City, Raja Ki Mandi, Agra Fort, Idgah Agra.

Don’t fall into the trap of free rides, good hotels, tour packages etc.

These drivers and tourist guides can be extremely persistent and persuasive but almost all of them would manipulate you. Just ignore them all.

Is Uber available in Agra?

Uber and Ola both are available in Agra. This makes travel very convenient, safe and comfortable. You get to know beforehand how much you need to pay for your ride.

Opening hours of Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal is open from sunrise till sunset. It remains closed on Friday. One can also see Taj in its glory in the moonlight. It is open on full moon night and two days before and after that.

Night visiting hours are between 8.30 pm to 12.30 am and duration allowed is 30 minutes.

• for citizens of SAARC and BIMSTEC countries INR 540,
• for other foreign tourists INR 1100.

Taj is closed for night visit on Fridays and for Ramzan namaz. It is good to check the weather beforehand while going for a night visit. Cloudless clear nights are the best to look at the splendor of this monument shimmering in the moonlight.

Places worth visiting in Agra are

Tomb of itimad ud daulah, fatehpur sikri, mehtab bagh, akbar’s tomb, gurudwara guru ka taal, sheroes hangout cafe.

The Taj Mahal was constructed by Emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. She died while giving birth to their child. Mumtaz was very beautiful and very dear to the Emperor. Hence, he decided to erect an equally beautiful monument in her memory that she was worthy of.

It took around 20 thousand artisans and 22 years to complete this mausoleum. It is known to have cost 32 billion rupees to build it. Taj Mahal is visited by around 7 to 8 million people every year.

The Taj is made up of white marble with carvings and calligraphy that displays a beautiful blend of Mughal, Persian and Indian architecture. The appearance and beauty of the Taj Mahal changes with the time of the day. It’s different at dawn, daytime, dusk and night.

Taj Mahal is such an important architectural marvel and important historical structure for India that during the Indo-Pak war in 1971 it was camouflaged so that it could be saved from any attack.

Besides Taj Mahal, there are many other places that are worth a visit in Agra.

After Taj Mahal, Agra Fort is the most famous place to visit in Agra. The construction of the Agra Fort was commissioned by the great Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1565.

Initial structures of the fort were made by Akbar but later on, Shah Jahan replaced many with his marble creations.

The entire fort is spread over an area of 94 acres and it is a masterpiece of Mughal architecture. Most of the fort is used by the Indian military. There are four entrance gates to this fort and the one used for the public is Amar Singh Gate.

This fort is in very good condition and well-maintained by the authorities. There are many Palaces, courtyards, and halls inside the fort. During the last years of his life, Shahjahan was imprisoned in this fort by his son Aurangzeb.

From here he could look at the Taj Mahal, his much cherished and valued creation.

The Tomb of Itimad Ud Daulah is often referred to as ‘Baby Taj’ and it has some similarities to the Taj Mahal.

It is also considered to be a draft of the Taj Mahal. It is the tomb of Mirza Ghiyas Beg who was a Persian nobleman and Emperor Jahangir’s chief minister.

His daughter Nur Jahan who was married to Jahangir built this tomb during the 17 th century.

Located at a distance of around 39 km from Agra, this is a famous excursion among tourists. It is well connected to nearby cities by daily trains, normal and Volvo buses, etc.

Mughal Emperor Akbar built Fatehpur Sikri in the 16th century in honor and gratitude for Saint Sheikh Salim Chishti. Due to his blessings, he was blessed with a son.

Mehtab Bagh was built by the Mughals and it is one of the last gardens built by them. Taj can be seen from various perspectives of this garden. It is located close to Taj Mahal, across the river in Etmadpur region of Agra.

Cabs and auto-rickshaws are available for hire from any part to Agra to this place.

After Shah Jahan, the garden was in ruins and remained forgotten till the early 1990s when it was renovated and became a popular spot among locals and visitors.

This is the resting place of Emperor Akbar located in a small town of Sikandra in Agra.

The construction of this place was started by the Emperor himself in 1602 and carried on by his son Jahangir after his death.

Made up of red sandstone and white marble, the monument stands amidst a beautiful garden. At the center of the garden lies Akbar’s mausoleum.

The king who became famous as ‘Akbar – The Great’ because of his justice, secularism and good administration skills.

Gurudwara Guru ka Taal is a historical Sikh pilgrimage place dedicated to the ninth Guru of Sikhs Sri Gur Tegh Bahadur. It is located near Sikandra in Agra district. Earlier it was a Taal (reservoir) built to collect and conserve rainwater.

The history of this place dates back to the time in the 17 th century when Guru Tegh Bahadur offered his arrest to Aurangzeb, the Mughal Emperor. He was taken to Delhi after arrest along with his other Sikh companions.

The Sheroes Hangout Cafe looks like any other cafe in a famous touristy place but there is a major difference. The staff that works here are all females who survived acid attacks.

They chose not to just survive but thrive after such heinous incidents and emerged as Sheroes (She+Heroes).

Delhi and Agra are the major hub of North India tourism millions of tourists visit these famed cities by road, by train or by airs every year. Agra being close to Delhi is a great choice of travel from Delhi. Even one who is having few hours in spare can make a short tour of Taj Mahal from Delhi . A bus is the most cost-effective option to take you from Delhi to Agra . If you take a bus, it takes about 3½–6 hours depending on your bus. Tip: Double-check the location of the departure and arrival stations, because some of them are around 30 minutes from downtown Delhi/Agra.

1. Taj Mahal

Rightfully considered as the most beautiful monument in the world, Taj Mahal is located in the historical city of Agra. Popularly known as the “symbol of love”, Taj Mahal was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as a memorial for his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal who died while giving birth to their 14th child in 1631.

The construction was finally completed by 1653 AD. The tomb is laid out in a rectangular shape, and can be approached through a massive gateway which has an arch and alcoves on both sides of it.

Each of the corners of the mausoleum platform is graced with 40 meter high white minarets.  Within the Taj you will also find an inlay of thousands of semi-precious stones carved with flowers.

The four Taj features impressive vaulted arches containing pietra dura scrollwork and the quotations from the Quran. The whole structure is topped off by four small domes.

Tourists usually prefer not to stay very long in Agra, as it's renowned for being a rather unappealing city with a lot of touts. However, there are quite a few worthwhile places to visit in Agra and around, apart from India's most famous monument -- the Taj Mahal. The many interesting remnants of the Mughal era (predating the Taj Mahal) will intrigue you and the crazy, congested bazaars of the Old City will captivate you. It's possible to experience village life and get close to nature as well. You may be surprised by what's on offer!

This UNESCO Word Heritage site is one of the most robust and important Mughal forts in India. After arriving in Agra in 1558, Emperor Akbar extensively rebuilt the fort using red sandstone. The process took eight years and was completed in 1573. The fort retained its stature until Shah Jahan shifted the Mughal capital from Agra to Delhi in 1638. It lost much of its grandeur after his death in 1666, and during the 18th century was repetitively invaded and captured. Finally, it fell into the hands of the British in 1803. Although many of the buildings inside the fort have been destroyed, some mosques , public and private audience halls, fairy-tale palaces, towers, and courtyards still remain. Another attraction is the evening sound and light show that recreates the fort's history. If budget is a concern, it's advisable to skip the less-impressive Red Fort in Delhi in favor of Agra Fort. Agra's Other Tombs

Agra has two significant tombs, with impressive Islamic-style architecture, that existed before the Taj Mahal but have subsequently been overshadowed by it. One of them contains the body of Emperor Akbar, widely considered to be the most influential Mughal emperor. It was completed in 1614 and is situated in Sikandra, on the northwest outskirts of Agra on the road to Mathura. (Tickets cost 300 rupees for foreigners and 25 rupees for Indians). His wife's body is housed in another tomb nearby, with a similar entrance fee.

The tomb of Itmad-ud-Daulah was the first to be made out of white marble (instead of the red sandstone typical of Mughal architecture) and is often referred to as the "Baby Taj". It's located amid a small garden alongside the Yamuna River, and contains the body of Mirza Ghiyas Beg who served under Akbar. His daughter married Akbar's son, Jehangir, and he was later appointed chief minister. (Tickets cost 300 rupees for foreigners and 25 rupees for Indians).

Mehtab Bagh

Don’t want to pay the hefty admission fee or battle the crowds to visit the Taj Mahal? Or, simply want an alternative perspective of it? You can clearly see the Taj from across the river bank. One such place with a view to remember is Mehtab Bagh, the "Moonlight Garden". This 25 acre Mughal garden complex is situated directly opposite the monument and was actually built before the Taj, by Emperor Babur (the founder of the Mughal Empire). Mughal Heritage Walk Through Kachhpura Village

The Mughal Heritage Walk is a community-based tourism initiative that was started by CURE (Center for Urban and Regional Excellence) to help villagers make an income from tourism and improve their living conditions. This 1 kilometer (0.6 mile) walk is conducted by villagers who have been trained as tour guides. It takes place on the riverside opposite the Taj Mahal, goes through Kachhpura village, and ends at Mehtab Bagh. You'll get to visit a number of lesser-known monuments of the Mughal Era in a rural setting, interact with the village communities, and enjoy a fabulous view of the Taj Mahal as well. Taj Nature Walk

Get away from the crowds and enjoy the Taj Mahal surrounded by nature. Less than 500 meters (0.3 miles) from the East Gate, on Fatehabad Road, there's a 70 hectare reserve forest that provides a unique opportunity to admire the monument in different hues and settings. You can wander through its paths to various viewpoints, watch towers, and rest areas. The reserve is open daily from sunrise until sunset. The entry fee is 100 rupees for foreigners and 20 rupees for Indians.

Sheroes Hangout

Tucked away between trinket shops opposite The Gateway Hotel on Fatehabad Road is groovy graffiti-filled cafe that's a must-visit in Agra.   The remarkable and inspiring Sheroes (She+Heroes) Hangout is completely staffed by women who are survivors of horrific acid attacks in India. It opened in December 2014 and was founded by a Delhi-based NGO called Stop Acid Attacks.  The idea is to raise awareness of this dreadful issue and give the women confidence to show their faces in public after being disfigured. As well as serving tasty food and beverages, the cafe has an ever-expanding library (so you can relax and read while you eat) and an exhibition space.

The Bazaars of the Old City

To experience the heart of Agra, head to the fascinating and congested Old City behind 17th century Jama Masjid mosque. There, you'll encounter a tangle of narrow lanes housing a startling variety of wares including spices, clothes, saris, jewelry, shoes, crafts and snack stalls. This area can be quite overwhelming if you don't know your way around. Hence, taking a guided walking tour is a good idea. It will also enable you to discover offbeat attractions such as the concealed Mankameshwar temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Agra Vegetable Market

For a vibrant spectacle, get up early and head over to the wholesale vegetable market on Fatehabad Road. This energetic market, which takes place in a vacant lot, is a distribution hub for produce from all over India. Colorfully painted trucks bring in the produce and deposit it in piles, all arranged by type. Vendors sit surrounded by the tempting, edible displays. The market winds up by 9 a.m., so don't be late. Wildlife SOS operates the Agra Bear Rescue Center, which houses sloth bears that used to be held captive and forced to dance. The center is open every day from sunrise to sunset and is located on National Highway 19, inside Soor Sarovar Bird Sanctuary. It's about 50 minutes northwest of Agra on the way to Mathura. The entry cost, charged by the forest department, is 50 rupees for Indians and 500 rupees for foreigners. This enables visitors to access an enclosed viewing area and watch a short educational movie. However, if you want to get closer to the bears, you'll need to pay 1,500 rupees per person for a private guided tour. This must be booked in advance and is recommended. Otherwise, you may be disappointed with the lack of interaction. There are three tour slots per day: 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Wildlife SOS also has an Elephant Conservation and Care Center , about 15 minutes further along the highway towards Mathura, where you can spend time with rescued elephants.

Korai Village

On the way to Fatehpur Sikhri, drop into Korai Village rural tourism initiative. Korai is a tribal village, whose inhabitants were the keepers of dancing sloth bears. They've been struggling to earn an income and survive since the bears were taken away, as they were not provided with compensation. You'll be able to learn about and experience daily village life, and even meet the village magician, Mohammad. The cost to enter the village is $10 per person.

Fatehpur Sikri

Fatehpur Sikri is situated about an hour west of Agra and is a popular side trip, although touts and beggars have become a huge menace. This abandoned city was founded by Emperor Akbar in 1571, when he decided to move his capital there from Agra Fort, and is one of India's top historical destinations . • If cancellations are made 30 days before the start date of the trip, 25% of total tour cost will be charged as cancellation fees.
• If cancellations are made 15-30 days before the start date of the trip, 50% of total tour cost will be charged as cancellation fees.
• If cancellations are made within 0-15 days before the start date of the trip, 100% of total tour cost will be charged as cancellation fees.
• In case of unforeseen weather conditions or government restrictions, certain trips or activities may get cancelled. In such cases operator will try their best to provide an alternate feasible. However a cash refund will not be applicable for the same.
• Cancellations are strictly subjected to cancellation policies mentioned on the website & are irrespective of the date of booking.
