"Almost Heaven, West Virginia."

The state that inspired John Denver's now-classic American anthem, does, in fact, feel a bit like Heaven (or at least what we imagine it to be). Yet it isn't a destination at top of many bucket lists, if it even has a place on those lists at all. It's time to change your mind.

Read on to discover the top things to do in West Virginia.

If there's only one place you can visit in West Virginia, let it be New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. Born out of a COVID-19 relief bill, New River Gorge became the nation's 63rd national park in December 2020. The area – which spans more than 70,000 acres – has long been a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Its 53-mile stretch of the New River (ironically one of the oldest rivers in the world) is famous for whitewater rafting, with beginner- and family-friendly tours and rapids up to Class V, widely considered some of the most challenging to navigate.

Of course, the park also offers other ways to take in its otherworldly landscape – think scenic driving routes, hiking, biking, climbing, fishing and free ranger-led activities including junior ranger programs. Accommodation options inside the park are limited to camping, but there are plenty of hotels and resorts within a short drive.

Bridge Walk: Lansing

Top things to do in West Virginia

Whatever you do in New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, don't miss the one-of-a-kind Bridge Walk, where guided tours are offered on a catwalk beneath the famous New River Gorge Bridge. The bridge towers 876 feet above the New River, but don't worry – guests are securely fastened to a cable, and tours move at a relaxed pace so you can feel comfortable (and stop for scenic views and photo ops along the way). Previous visitors say the Bridge Walk is a must in West Virginia, with some calling it a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Participants must be at least 8 years old.

If you're feeling extra brave after mastering this walkway, you can even come back for Bridge Day, West Virginia's largest single-day festival, where thousands gather every October to watch daredevils jump off the bridge into the gorge below.

Hatfield-McCoy Trails

day trip ideas wv

The infamously bizarre Hatfield-McCoy Feud that lasted nearly 30 years (and even inspired a dinner show in Pigeon Forge ) actually took place in West Virginia and Kentucky. Today, the region in which the feud took place is now the largest trail system on the East Coast, with 1,000 miles of wooded pathways, rolling hills and quintessential Appalachian towns to explore.

Waterfall Trail

Top things to do in West Virginia

In June 2022, West Virginia launched a statewide Waterfall Trail, allowing travelers to more easily navigate some of the state's 200-plus waterfalls with a free mobile passport – plus the chance to win prizes along the way. As of 2023, there are 38 trail stops in total. These include the famous Blackwater Falls, where the tannic acid of fallen hemlock and red spruce needles tints the water. Not surprisingly, it's one of West Virginia's most photographed destinations.

The ultimate experience in West Virginia, Adventures on the Gorge, is an award-winning adventure outfitter and resort on the rim of New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. The destination resort offers a dizzying array of outdoor activities, the most popular of which is whitewater rafting. Travelers rave about the half- and multi-day excursions for various skill levels, noting that the guides are friendly, helpful and all-around great. Adventure seekers can also enjoy zip lining and canopy tours (including a nighttime MoonTrek), rappelling, mountain biking, guided hikes, horseback riding, cave tours, laser tag and paintball. On Summersville Lake (the largest in West Virginia), there's kayaking, standup paddleboarding and multi-sport excursions that include a little bit of everything.

After an action-packed day, visitors can grab a bite to eat at any of the three on-site restaurants and retreat to their choice of accommodations, which include everything from cozy cabins to glamping tents with views of the New River Gorge Bridge and surrounding forest.

The Greenbrier: White Sulphur Springs

Top things to do in West Virginia

A National Historic Landmark, The Greenbrier served as a hospital for wounded soldiers during the Civil War and World War II. In 1778, it became "America's Resort," first hosting wealthy Southerners, then celebrities, U.S. presidents and even royalty. You don't have to be a guest of the luxury resort (or an A-lister) to get a glimpse of it – guided hotel tours are offered – but overnight guests enjoy upscale accommodations ranging from signature guest rooms to estate homes, a roster of activities for all ages, golf, a spa, restaurants, a casino, retail shops, seasonal events and more. Whether you splurge for an overnight stay or not, don't miss the Bunker Tour, where you'll discover a former emergency fallout shelter and top-secret government relocation facility for Congress from the Cold War period.

Address: 101 W. Main St., White Sulphur Springs, WV 24986

Lost World Caverns: Lewisburg

Top things to do in West Virginia

Go 120 feet underground to explore stalagmites (some of which measure up to 80 feet tall) and stalactites at Lost World Caverns. Self-guided tours typically take about 45 minutes and are appropriate for all ages, while the Wild Cave Tour for ages 10 and up takes visitors to undeveloped parts of the caverns over the course of several hours. This attraction, which was first discovered in 1942, also includes a museum and gift shop. Previous visitors highly recommend Lost World Caverns, cautioning that the caves can be slippery and difficult to traverse in some areas, so be sure to wear sturdy shoes and a light jacket .

Harpers Ferry

Top things to do in West Virginia

Perhaps the most well-known destination in West Virginia, Harpers Ferry is more than a quaint 19th-century town. It's a National Historic Park with Civil War sites including battlefields, remnants of campsites and, most notably, John Brown's Fort and the John Brown Museum. If you don't remember this one from history class, John Brown is the abolitionist credited with leading what's now known as the Harpers Ferry Raid, in which he attempted to start an armed revolt of enslaved people in 1859.

Harpers Ferry is also known as the psychological midpoint of the 2,178-mile Appalachian National Scenic Trail and, as such, attracts thru-hikers to the historic Lower Town's restaurants and nearby vacation rentals. Other highlights in Harper's Ferry include The Point, where you can see the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers; crossing the Potomac on a pedestrian bridge to access the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park towpath; and, better still, getting out on the waters in a river tube, cold drink in hand.

Berkeley Springs State Park: Berkeley Springs

Top things to do in West Virginia

Soak in the soothing springs of this state park, known for its warm waters, which maintain a comfortable temperature of 74.3 degrees Fahrenheit, and its bathhouses, where available spa services include massages and mineral baths. The springs date back centuries, first flourishing as a health mecca for Native Americans, then drawing European settlers beginning in 1730. Several years later, George Washington discovered the healing powers of the springs and began visiting them regularly. It is largely because of him that the place now known as Berkeley Springs State Park remains the popular wellness destination it is today. Visitors praise the park and surrounding town, noting that you can see the historic Berkeley Springs Castle (reserved for private events only) from here.

Address: 2 S. Washington St., Berkeley Springs, WV 25411

Mothman Museum: Point Pleasant

Top things to do in West Virginia

In 1966, two grave diggers in Clendenin, West Virginia, reported the sighting of a strange winged figure with red eyes. Shortly after the incident, local residents began to make similar claims, with many blaming the massive creature, nicknamed the Mothman, for the 1967 Silver Bridge collapse and subsequent death of 46 people. The story was so bizarre it captured the attention of Hollywood (resulting in "The Mothman Prophecies" movie, based on a book of the same name) and inspired the Mothman Museum in the town of Point Pleasant, where the mythical creature is said to reside. The museum features original newspaper clippings, handwritten police reports, props used in the 2002 film and more. The Mothman Statue stands 12 feet tall outside of the museum, and the Mothman Festival is hosted every September. Previous patrons of the museum say it's fun and interesting, and that admission – less than $5 for adults – is cheap.

After you explore this eerie museum, spend some time in Point Pleasant, an attraction in itself with great restaurants, shopping, seasonal events and the historic (and supposedly haunted) Lowe Hotel.

Address: 400 Main St., Point Pleasant, WV 25550

World's Largest Teapot: Chester

Top things to do in West Virginia

If you're road-tripping through West Virginia, consider making a stop at this quirky attraction, which measures 12 feet high and 44 feet wide. Before achieving fame, the "World's Largest Teapot" was created as a giant keg for Hires Root Beer and then installed as a snack stand at a mini-golf course in Pennsylvania. In 1938, a man named William "Babe" Devon brought it to Chester, West Virginia. He added a spout, lid and handle so he could use the newly revamped structure to promote the region's then-booming pottery industry, selling teapots and other souvenirs from its window. The teapot went out of business around 1980, was restored by the Chester City Council in 1990, and has sat at the junction of U.S. Route 30 and State Route 2 ever since.

West Virginia Penitentiary: Moundsville

Top things to do in West Virginia

During its 100-plus years in operation, the West Virginia Penitentiary saw riots, homicides and executions including public hangings. So it's no surprise that when the storied prison decommissioned in 1995, former prison guards began offering tours to the public. Current tour options include a Public Ghost Hunt and Private Paranormal Investigations, as the prison is said to be haunted by former inmates. You can even try your hand at an escape room game. Previous visitors confirm the prison tours are all at once creepy, informative and enjoyable. The West Virginia Penitentiary is so spooky that it's been featured in Netflix's "Mindhunter" (along with the town of Moundsville) and Hulu's "Castle Rock," among other TV shows and movies.

A small, family-operated coal mine and camp from roughly 1890 to 1910 that later became a commercial endeavor until it closed in 1953, the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine is now a highly rated attraction in West Virginia. Previous visitors say both kids and adults enjoy exploring the former coal mines with veteran miners, who lead guided tours in authentic "man trips," the cars used in mining operations. When you emerge from the tunnels, explore the Coal Camp, with restored original buildings including the Pemberton Coal Camp Church and the Helen Coal Camp School, then stop by the Youth Museum of Southern West Virginia, which features a planetarium and a recreated homestead from the late 19th century. Admission includes the tour and access to the camp and museum. The Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine is open from April to November, but bring a light jacket no matter when you visit as the mines can get chilly.

Both areas offer some of the best views in the state. Throughout the vast national forest there are ample hiking and biking trails, scenic driving routes, and places to stop for a picnic lunch. You can also go swimming, boating, fishing, horseback riding and, if you'd like to stay a few days, camping in tents, RVs or on-site cabins. A visit in the winter affords opportunities for snowmobiling, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

NROCKS Outdoor Adventures

With so much rugged mountain landscape, it's no surprise that West Virginia has a Via Ferrata (a mountain route with permanently installed steel rungs and cables). Located near the Monongahela National Forest, NROCKS Outdoor Adventures offers guided rock-climbing tours of the Via Ferrata. Participants aged 13 and up gain 1,085 feet in elevation, cross a suspension bridge that is 150 feet high and 200 feet long, and reach exposed heights of 280 feet during the roughly 1-mile trek, which takes about 3.5 hours. Recent tourgoers say the experience is thrilling, though not for the faint of heart. For the ultimate adrenaline rush, nighttime tours are offered on select dates throughout the year.

The train ride , which affords panoramic views of the Appalachians, lasts about 4.5 hours round trip and includes lunch. For those visiting Cass Scenic Railroad State Park with kids, previous visitors recommend the two-hour round trip to Whittaker Station, a former logging camp. Some travelers also suggest a visit in the fall to enjoy the colorful foliage . Within Cass Scenic Railroad State Park, visitors can explore the former lumbering town as well as a gift shop, restaurant, museum and theater. Overnight cabin accommodations are also available.

However, it wasn’t just the inmates who suffered; the underpaid employees also faced immense challenges and often had to take matters into their own hands. The facility’s haunting history, with 998 inmates losing their lives to violence, abuse, or suicide, further added to the sense of unease. 5 Charming West Virginia Mountain Towns Perfect For A Day Trip From Washington, D.C.

day trip ideas wv

  • Destinations
  • United States
  • West Virginia

There are so many charming towns to visit in the mountains of West Virginia. After 44 years of living there, I finally explored the state’s Eastern Panhandle. To say I was blown away is an understatement. Four to five hours from Charleston, 75 minutes from Washington, D.C., and an hour from Baltimore, this is one area you will want to take advantage of.

I don’t recommend seeing each town on a separate trip, but instead, one trip to five exciting places that are all very different in flavor. I prefer to drive from Charleston, where my family lives, but you could fly into D.C. or Baltimore and rent a car.

Here are the five towns you need to visit on a day trip through the West Virginia mountains.

Appalachian Scenic Trail in Harpers Ferry

1. Harpers Ferry

Harpers Ferry is in the lower Shenandoah Valley in Jefferson County, West Virginia. It is a tiny town (population: 285) that swells to bursting year round as tourists stop here to learn about a staggering event that “ignited the Civil War.”

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park

People flock to Harpers Ferry National Historical Park , and Lower Town is the heart of it. You can take the shuttle bus from the visitor center or try to land one of the few parking spots in Lower Town itself. Plan to spend 3–4 hours exploring on foot, and more if you wish to hike a bit on the Appalachian Trail or 22 miles of additional trails. In the historical park, I loved the Lewis and Clark Museum , White Hall Tavern, St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, and Cannonball Deli for ice cream treats.

The park sits at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers, with spectacular views and different photo ops on land and on the pedestrian bridge. You will probably see tubers floating down the river and plenty of kayakers and boaters.

John Brown’s Fort

John Brown’s Raid occurred at Harpers Ferry, so to me, John Brown’s Fort was the do-not-miss point of interest. Brown was a well-known abolitionist willing to die to end slavery. Though it was part of Virginia at the time, Harpers Ferry was where he was hanged for leading enslaved people in an attempted revolt.

Rabbit Hole

There are several restaurants and shops in Lower Town, including the Rabbit Hole (a gastropub). Braised short rib routine and loaded pork barbecue fries caught my attention. However, I was also intrigued by Rabbit Hole’s CBD-infused cinnamon bun.

True Treats Historic Candy

True Treats Historic Candy is also in Harpers Ferry. It offers centuries of candy, from ancient candies to present-day sweets. It’s run by candy historian Susan Benjamin, who boasts that it is the world’s only historic candy store.

Pro Tip: Pop into the Bookshop for Harpers Ferry souvenirs, posters, books, and NPS Passport cancelation stamps.

German Street in downtown Shepherdstown

2. Shepherdstown

Did you know that Shepherdstown is also West Virginia’s oldest town? The Mountain State’s first settlement began before the Revolutionary War. It really got on the map when James Rumsey invented the steamboat here in 1787. Today, Shepherdstown is a college town, and Shepherd University recently celebrated its 150th anniversary.

Editor’s Note: As our own Jeanine Consoli writes, some say Shepherdstown is the most haunted town in the U.S .

I like to eat at sophisticated restaurants and shop in Shepherdstown. Pop in the boutiques on both sides of German Street before grabbing dinner at the prestigious Press Room

At Press Room , the oysters are delicious, being so close to the coast. The house pâté pleases me to no end. Pasta carbonara and grilled sea scallops are excellent entrées, but save room for the desserts that Press Room is famous for, like lavender creme or panna cotta with fig vincotto. Reservations are recommended.

Shepherdstown Shopping

When it comes to shopping, Four Seasons Books and the On the Wings of Dreams gift shop are musts. Another popular place for is O’Hurley’s General Store , a treasure trove of “stuff” with an operational blacksmith shop.

Pro Tip: If you like some exercise, consider renting a bicycle from Shepherdstown Pedal & Paddle to cover more ground and enjoy the fresh mountain air.

Bavarian Inn

Overnight in Shepherdstown at the Bavarian Inn . As the name implies, you’ll feel like you stumbled into Germany at this gorgeous place. The Bavarian Inn has choices of rooms and chalets overlooking the Potomac River, a wonderful restaurant, and Bavarian Brothers Brewery, which I have yet to try. The restaurant menu has classic dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as some German specialty items like Sauerbraten (my mouth is salivating!) and Jaegerschnitzel.

Splurge on a suite at the Bavarian Inn, with antique furnishings, lovely linens, Jacuzzi tubs, and a gas fireplace.

Pro Tip: Any Nora Roberts (or J.D. Robb) fans? The home of the beloved best-selling author is 15 minutes away, in Boonsboro, Maryland. If you can, add a few hours to explore this delightful little town. Turn The Page Bookstore is owned by Roberts’ husband, Bruce Wilder, and has an incredible collection of her books.

Hollywood Casino in Charles Town

3. Charles Town

I always wanted to visit Charles Town to try my luck at the thoroughbred horse track. I finally got to do just that this fall. While Charles Town is a typical city with everything you need or want, I was there for the gambling options.

Hollywood Casino At Charles Town Races

Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races offers live horse racing, 1,900 slot machines, table games, live poker, and sports betting. You can find hours of entertainment at this top-notch facility. Surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, Hollywood Casino also offers a luxury hotel to rest your weary head. A free shuttle is included to the racetrack and casino.

Hollywood Casino features four restaurants, one being the high-end Final Cut Steakhouse. The menu features diver scallops, lobster, oysters, sea bass, juicy steaks, and more than 400 bottles of wine to choose from. You can also enjoy great entertainment at the casino, with 2023 performances including Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band, The Mavericks, Tesla, and Wheel of Fortune LIVE! .

Modern Roman bath in Berkeley Springs

4. Berkeley Springs

Berkeley Springs is one of the jewels of West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle. This funky little mountain town, established in 1776, was the country’s first spa town.

Berkeley Springs Spas

Berkely Springs is known as the place George Washington “took in the waters,” and the warm, healing mineral waters are still available at Berkeley Springs State Park and other indoor venues with contemporary spas and historic Roman baths.

Berkeley Springs’ centuries-old mineral waters flow at a constant 74 degrees, produce 1000+ gallons per minute, and have sulfates, nitrates, and carbonates. Due to laws written as the town was established in 1776, anyone can drink the water and fill jugs at the public tap. Visitors can experience wading in the ancient pools in Berkeley Springs State Park, one of the nation’s smallest parks.

Cacapon State Park

Yet another incredible year-round state park is tucked away in the mountainous parts of Berkeley Springs. Cacapon State Park offers a lake for swimming, fishing, and paddle boating, hiking trails, a golf course, and horseback riding.

Berkeley Springs Restaurants

The town has an arsenal of restaurants; you will find something for any taste here. Friday through Sunday, the Canary Grill has tantalizing salads, sandwiches, and pulled pork potato skins. Charlotte’s Cafe is a locals’ favorite, with gourmet French toast and scramble bowls for breakfast, soup, salad, and sandwiches for lunch.

Beehive Cafe is another unique eatery in Berkeley Springs, with a menu made entirely of plant-based foods. Cacapon Mountain Brewing (open Thursday through Sunday) is another big draw that is family and pet friendly, with outdoor seating.

Cacapon Lodge & Resort State Park

Country Inn

There are two lodging standouts in Berkeley Springs. First is the well-known Country Inn , which conveniently sits beside the state park and within walking distance of many attractions. Its popular WV Dining Room serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner (I swear by the Asian Pork Dumplings). The quaint Rustic Morgan Tavern is great for date night or enjoying a cocktail, wine, or beer. Country Inn’s property has English gardens, a gift shop, a spa, and modern amenities.

White Pines Estate

The second is White Pines Estate , which I recently learned about. After reading every word on their website, I am sure this extraordinary property would have made my upcoming 100 Things to Do in West Virginia Before You Die book had I known about it before my deadline.

What piqued my curiosity about the 65-acre White Pines Estate is the stunning mountain setting, home-cooked breakfast, afternoon snacks, onsite library with a telescope, and Ellen’s Tea Room. Visiting tea rooms is one of my favorite things ever, and the King’s Tea from Ellen’s is on my next visit to West Virginia’s radar.

Berkely Springs Antique Mall

Shout out to the Berkeley Springs Antique Mall, a place I could get lost in for hours and hours browsing the cool and unique merchandise that is so well displayed and labeled. Though I have only shopped for antiques in Berkeley Springs, I know there are also numerous art galleries, studios, and classes.

Antique shopping in West Virginia

5. Martinsburg

I was unfamiliar with Martinsburg until a quick visit this fall. I was there to check out the well-stocked antique shops: Queen Street Gallery and Creek Side Antiques . If you are an antique collector, you will have a ball here.

Other Martinsburg points of interest are:

  • De Fluri’s Fine Chocolate (heavenly sea-salt caramels)
  • Wonderment Puppet Theater (bring the grandkids)
  • Belle Boyd House , an 1853 home of a female Confederate spy, built in the Greek Revival style

FYI: Just In Time Seafood is the perfect place to purchase premium fresh-caught shrimp and crab. My friend Angie always makes it a point to pick some up to take home.

The southern state, with its deep roots in Appalachian culture, is divided into nine travel regions, each with unique points of interests. A great way to explore the mountains and valleys is a scenic road trip, stopping in cities and towns along the way to visit historic districts, museums and attractions, unique shops and galleries, and enjoy the local culinary scene. West Virginia is a year-round destination with something for everyone. The 45 state parks and forests attract thousands of outdoor enthusiasts to hike, bike, swim, and stay in the lodges and campgrounds. The small towns that are dotted across this wild and wonderful state host annual festivals and events, celebrations that have become local family traditions. Our day trip recommendations start in Charleston and highlight many of the area’s great destinations.

Here are five great day trips in The Mountain State:

Fayetteville (The Outdoors)

About 60 miles northwest of Charleston, the New River Gorge Bridge is one of the most photographed places in all of West Virginia. Gain a different vantage point of the bridge on a tour from Adventures on the Gorge , a premier adventure resort. There are many tour options to consider; however, the whitewater rafting trips are extremely popular and range from mild to menacing. For the adrenaline junkie, the infamous Upper Galey River Trip traverses one of the top five stretches of Class V whitewater in the world. The most popular trip is on the Lower New River with Class IV whitewater and stretches of calmer water between the excitement of the rapids. Check with the tour company— there are plenty of options, including half-day trips, overnight excursions, and great family rafting experiences to appreciate the scenic landscape on the calmer sections of the river. For an incredibly unique experience, attend the annual Bridge Day celebration (every third Saturday in October) and watch daredevils BASE jump into the Gorge below. You can also participate, if you dare!!

Lewisburg (Small Town Experiences)

Located 100 miles southeast of Charleston, the charming small town of Lewisburg offers a unique blend of arts and culture and a vibrant downtown area packed with galleries, boutiques, and an outstanding culinary scene. This is an excellent day trip while staying at the nearby Greenbrier Resort , one of the best resorts in the United States. To experience everything Lewisburg has to offer, plan your visit around a live performance at historic Carnegie Hall or the highly regarded Greenbrier Valley Theater . Prior to the performance, visit the Greenbrier Historical Society to see the museum exhibits focused on life in the Greenbrier Valley and a tour of the historic North House. Choose from casual to fine dining for lunch or dinner at The Asylum , The French Goat , Stardust Café . After the show, you’ll agree that Lewisburg is one of the best small towns in the country.

day trip ideas wv

Parkersburg (Parks & Recreation)

Located on the Ohio River, about 75 miles north of Charleston, the small town of Parkersburg is home to Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park . Start your day trip to the unique state park at the Blennerhassett Museum of Regional History (located on Juliana Street) to purchase tickets before boarding the Island Belle Sternwheeler for a quick ferry trip from Point Park to the island. Spend the day exploring the state park, the highlight of which is the reconstructed 18th century mansion that was owned by Harman and Margaret Blennerhassett. In 1789, the home was considered the most beautiful in the entire West. Guided tours are provided by staff dressed in period clothing and offer guests a glimpse into life on the island over two hundred years ago. The interesting stories cover a wide range of topics, including political persecution, treason, and conspiracy— yes, it all happened on this little island in the middle of the Ohio River! After the comprehensive tour, take a horse-drawn wagon ride around the island or rent bicycles and explore the trails and other points of interest. This is one day trip that you will be telling your friends about for years!!

day trip ideas wv

Snowshoe (Sports & Sporting Events)

The world-class Snowshoe Mountain Resort is located 150 miles east of Charleston, near the Monongahela National Forest. The resort is a year-round destination for outdoor enthusiasts, with over 11,000 acres and dozens of activities. During the summer months, visitors flock to the resort to enjoy the Appalachian Mountain landscapes while ascending over the forest on a scenic lift ride, playing a round of championship golf, and mountain biking on one of the most extensive trail systems in the United States. Once the snowmaking begins and winter sets in, the resort offers over 60 trails across three unique mountain areas and bike trails, as well as other winter activities like snowmobiling, tubing, and snowshoeing. Extend your trip with an overnight stay in one of the many lodging options with spa services and restaurants to include on your classic West Virginia getaway.

day trip ideas wv

Weston (Tours & Experiences)

Located about 100 miles northeast of Charleston, the small city of Weston has two designated historic districts: the Weston Downtown Historic District and Weston Downtown Residential Historic District. Our day trip takes you to the former Weston State Hospital, more commonly referred to as the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum . The impressive main hospital building designed in the Gothic/Tudor revival style is one of the largest hand-cut stone masonry buildings in the country. Today, tours of this national landmark detail the history of the facility, medicines and humane treatment available for the mentally ill, and paranormal activity. Choose between the Heritage and History Tours or Paranormal Tours, both of them have 160 years of unbelievable stories to share. There are also special tours, available on a seasonal basis— a few of the popular include Asylum After Dark, Bedlam, and Flashlight Tours.

17 Best Weekend Getaways in West Virginia

Written by Anietra Hamper Updated May 3, 2023

Author Anietra Hamper has explored many corners of West Virginia, including its quaint small towns.

West Virginia beckons the kind of weekend getaway that can soothe the soul with natural scenic beauty and quiet time away from the bigger cities. There is so much to do in the Mountain State, from hiking along the Appalachian National Scenic Trail near Harpers Ferry to hitting the white water rapids in the New River and exploring America's newest national park, the New River Gorge National Park .

New River Gorge National Park, West Virginia

If a scenic drive is more your pace, you may want to plan your weekend getaway around a visit to one of the bigger cities, or plan a themed weekend that includes golf, fall foliage, antiquing, or uncovering West Virginia's rich military history.

For ideas on places to visit, see our list of the best weekend getaways in West Virginia.

Drive the Highland Scenic Highway

A weekend in morgantown, a white water rafting weekend, a golf weekend in wheeling, a nature weekend at america's newest national park, a west virginia crafts weekend, a fall foliage weekend, hike on the appalachian trail, a charleston weekend, an antiquing weekend, a quiet getaway in parkersburg, a military history weekend in martinsburg, a weekend on the water at summersville lake, a winter ski weekend, a west virginia kayaking weekend, historic harpers ferry weekend, spa weekend in berkeley springs, map of weekend getaways in west virginia.

Highland Scenic Highway

West Virginia's country roads are some of the most scenic in the United States. Forest floors blooming with wildflowers, raging rivers flowing, and the dramatic peaks and valleys of this mountainous region are some of the things to see.

The Highland Scenic Highway is a National Scenic Byway that goes through the Monongahela National Forest , which is hands-down one of the best places to visit in the state . There are many scenic overlooks during the 43-mile drive where you can stop to enjoy the view and capture some beautiful images .

You will start in Richwood , making your way to U.S. Route 219, increasing your elevation along the way from 2,325 feet to 4,500 feet on the mountain road. Pack a picnic for your drive because you will find many picnic shelters where you can stop as you make your way through the Allegheny Highlands .

The Monongahela River and downtown Morgantown

Morgantown is rooted deep in Appalachian history, and it has lots of things to do including spectacular outdoor opportunities, so you can spend a weekend with a mix of culture and adventure. The town is situated along the Monongahela River, so whether you want to try some fly fishing on the water or just enjoy a stunning West Virginia sunset while you try the local food, Morgantown is a low-key weekend.

Plan to spend a day at the Cook Hayman Pharmacy Museum to see the collection of 18th-century pharmacy items and then make your way to the Easton Roller Mill . The mill showcases early tools used to grind wheat, and there is an antique steam engine on display.

To get your adrenaline going while in Morgantown, spend a day enjoying the outdoors. Take a hike on Cheat Lake Trail , which stretches around a lake, or set out on one of the trails at Coopers Rock State Forest , where you can snap some photos from the scenic overlook that stands 1,200 feet above the Cheat River Canyon .

You can then spend a half day on a white water rafting trip along the Cheat River, where both beginner and advanced rafters can find a suitable trip.

New River rafting in West Virginia

The rapids in West Virginia are some of the best in the nation to tackle white water rafting. No matter what your skill level, you can find the right trip to suit your tolerance for adventure, from beginners to experts. Given the dynamic range of rafting opportunities here, it's no wonder it is one of the top outdoor adventures in West Virginia .

If you are new to rafting, you will want to consider trips along the Cheat River , Tygart River , or the Potomac River , where the waters and guided trips are more suited for beginner and intermediate rafters. For a hard-core rafting weekend, head to the New River , which offers several rafting levels, including exciting Class V rapids on the Gauley River .

This is an adventurous way to take in some of the scenic beauty of the New River Gorge National Park . Some guide companies, like Adventures on the Gorge, offer overnight rafting trips that include camping and are perfect for a full adventure-filled weekend.

Golf weekend in Wheeling

The city of Wheeling, West Virginia has six golf courses and several more just a few miles beyond the city. A golf weekend in Wheeling means that you can hit the links on the rolling hills that make up the landscape with a new course every day. Wilson Lodge at Oglebay Resort in Wheeling has several courses on the property.

The Crispin Golf Course is a regular for tournaments and a favorite of golfers for 50 years. The Palmer and Jones courses at Oglebay are championship courses inspired by golf legends Arnold Palmer and Robert Trent Jones.

Other golf options in Wheeling include the Wheeling Country Club , which has an 18-hole course and offers lessons for those new to the sport. There are courses at Wheeling Park as well.

New River Gorge National Park

There are so many ways to enjoy the outdoors in West Virginia, but few weekend getaways are going to match a visit to New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, one of the best things to do in West Virginia .

This is the newest designated national park in the United States, and the ways to experience it would take far more than a weekend, but that is just enough time to get a taste of its spectacular beauty.

Start your trip at the Canyon Rim Visitor Center to get information on the trails, activities, scenic viewpoints, and wildlife that are in the 70,000-acre park. The visitor center rangers can advise you on the best trails and things to do depending on whether you have a half-day, full-day, or several days to explore.

There are more than 100 miles of hiking trails, bike trails, scenic drives, fishing, night sky viewing, and whitewater activities, so you will want to plan to get the most out of your time.

You might also try one of the free guided activities available from park rangers. The area surrounding the national park is not short of forest-view cabins to rent, so you can wrap up your outdoor days at the park by relaxing in a hot tub under the stars.

Tamarack in Beckley, West Virginia

The artistically inclined will enjoy a full weekend of uncovering some of the unique handcrafts from artists around the state. In fact, on any given weekend you are likely to find a craft fair, art show, or street fair with regional artists.

Your weekend will start at Tamarack in Beckley , West Virginia, which is a facility that showcases the West Virginia arts and Appalachian culture through retail handicrafts for sale, music, food, and visual arts.

Tamarack features 2,800 artists representing every county in the state. You will find entertainment and galleries to fill a day. Spend another day driving around the region to explore the local arts in other West Virginia cities like Fayetteville or Berkley Springs .

Address: 1 Tamarack Park, Beckley, West Virginia

Fall colors at the New River Gorge

Due to the dense forest land and the steep hills and valleys that make up West Virginia's landscape, leaf peeping in the fall is a spectacular experience as the red, orange, and purple colors pop on the trees. A fall foliage weekend will be unforgettable as you road trip through some of the most scenic spots.

You can plan a scenic drive that starts at Coopers Rock State Forest , where there is a spectacular overlook, and drive south until you get to Grandview . This scenic route will take you through some of the most picturesque forests and gorges in the state.

Along the way, you will pass Blackwater Falls State Park , which has stunning waterfalls; Summersville Lake ; the Canyon Rim Visitor Center ; Monongahela National Forest ; Elkins Train Depot ; and the New River Gorge Bridge , where you can see the colorful rolling valleys that go on for miles.

Since fall is a popular time for leaf viewing in the parks, you should book your lodging at least four to six months in advance.

The Appalachian Trail at Harpers Ferry

Serious hikers will love a weekend getaway to hike a section of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. You can get on a stretch of the trail out of Harpers Ferry and visit the trail headquarters to get more information on where to go for the time that you have available.

If you are a novice hiker, do not let the idea of the Appalachian Trail intimidate you. This is a great chance to give it a try without the commitment of backpacking in the wilderness for weeks.

The entire Appalachian Trail is more than 2,000 miles long and goes from Georgia to Maine. The access point in West Virginia is considered the halfway mark for hikers who are trekking the full route. The West Virginia portion of the trail is four miles long, so you can do the full section or just a portion of it.

When you are done, you can enjoy the historic town of Harpers Ferry, which can easily fill another day as you explore the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park or watch the trains pass at Harpers Ferry Station .

The State Capitol building in Charleston, West Virginia

The state capital of Charleston offers things to do that inspire more of a modern and urban weekend getaway compared to the outdoor scene in many of the other cities in the state. Your weekend exploration can be a mix of historic, scenic, and cultural experiences.

Plan a stop to tour the State Capitol building, where the shiny gold rotunda will catch your eye. The capitol complex has many statues and historic buildings to visit. Add the West Virginia Culture Center and State Museum to your itinerary to check out the telescope George Washington used to scout the land in the state, and see other exhibits about the state's history.

A visit to Capitol Market is a must. It is a farmers market with local vendors, located inside of an 1800s railyard that once belonged to the Kanawha and Michigan Railroad, where you can buy fresh produce, cheeses, and local goods.

You can schedule some downtime to visit the picturesque Kanawha State Forest. It is just a few minutes outside of Charleston. It is a recreational area with trails for hiking and biking and plenty of areas to relax, listen to the water, and just watch for native wildlife.

Antique glass bottles in West Virginia

There are several ways to enjoy an antiquing weekend in West Virginia. You can just pick a direction and drive for a leisurely and nostalgic road trip with treasures that you find in the antique stores in quaint towns with stops for home-cooking restaurants along the way.

You can also target a couple of key areas like Charleston and the New River Gorge region, where there are clusters of antique stores together. In Charleston, there is the South Charleston Antique Mall , which is a popular spot for vintage finds with 70 dealers.

Another great spot is the Stray Dog Antiques store, which has three floors full of antiques, jewelry, glassware, and vintage clothing.

In the New River Gorge area, you can find revolving antique inventory at the New River Antique Mall , with many vendor booths and the Antiques at Aides store, which is inside an old local department store. Stop for lunch at the Cathedral Café in nearby Fayetteville, which is inside of an old church.

A horse and an old log cabin at Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park

While so many areas of West Virginia are peaceful, Parkersburg offers a unique kind of quiet that is nice if you are just looking to be away from the regular business of the city and retreat to a slower pace.

One of the highlights during your Parkersburg weekend will be a trip by sternwheeler riverboat to the Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park . The small island is located on the Ohio River and has a stunning mansion, gardens, and museum with exhibits about the local history. You can visit the island from May through October and catch the ferry from Point Park in Parkersburg.

Spend some time on the waterfront at Point Park, where you can watch the boats go by and enjoy the sunset. Another park to visit in town is Fort Boreman Park, which is a reconstruction of a Civil War Fort. There are trails and scenic views from the park out onto the city and waterfront.

Parkersburg is also home to a unique little museum called the Oil and Gas Museum , which is worth visiting. It has three floors of everything related to the history of oil and gas and how those industries influenced the development of West Virginia.

Historic Mill in Martinsburg

West Virginia is a great place for history buffs, and you can make an entire weekend out of it with a visit to Martinsburg. It is a small town, but there is quite a bit of military history due to the number of battles that took place here.

Learn about Martinsburg's role in military efforts during the Civil War, Revolutionary War, and the French and Indian War. There are many historical buildings around town that you can explore at your own pace.

One of the more notable must-sees is the Adam Stephen House , a 1700s stone house that you can tour for a glimpse of 18 th -century life in Martinsburg. Another is the Martinsburg Roundhouse, a center that once housed machine shops for the B&O Railroad in the 1800s.

The museum showcases how the railroad that came through this town played such an important factor in why Martinsburg had a prominent military presence in so many historical battles.

Summersville Lake

Summersville Lake is popular with campers, so if you want to pitch a tent, cook s'mores over the fire, and wear yourself out swimming , kayaking , and rock climbing , then this is your weekend.

You can take your pick from things to do at Summersville Lake. There are both guided trips for activities like rock climbing and boating , or you can bring your own equipment and plan your trips independently on the water.

Fishing is one of the other popular things to do at the lake. You can catch bass, walleye, and bluegill. With more than 60 miles of shoreline, it is a great lake for kayaking, where you can get up close to the tall rock ledges that tower over the water.

There are several launch ramps for boating, so you can get in some waterskiing. There is a swimming beach located in the Battle Run area on the lake, which is also where campsites are available.

Snowshoe Mountain Ski Resort

West Virginia is a year-round outdoor recreation state, and while it is beautiful to experience in the spring, summer, and fall, winter introduces outstanding opportunities for a weekend ski getaway because of the mountains.

There are a number of ski resorts throughout the state that accommodate every skill level. Some resorts have downhill slopes only, and others also have terrain parks where snow acrobats can hone their skills on obstacles and ski jumps.

The Canaan Valley Resort has popular ski trails as does Oglebay Resort . These large resorts usually offer ski and lodging packages that can provide some savings for your getaway. There is also Snowshoe Mountain Ski Resort, Winterplace Ski Resort, and Timberline Mountain, which all have slopes. If you are new to skiing, most of the resorts offer beginner classes.

A kayaker tackling rapids in the New River Gorge

West Virginia is a popular place for kayaking mostly because there are so many great waterways and a wide range of water conditions to test your adrenaline. From the calm lakes to raging rapids, you can map out a varied kayaking weekend.

West Virginia has some wonderful water trails, which make it easy to figure out where to go and what to expect when you get here. Some of the most scenic waters are at Summersville Lake, Sutton Lake , and Beach Fork Lake . These are calmer waters where you can explore cliffs and coves and spend an entire day on the water.

If you are looking for a bit more of a challenge, you will want to consider some of the mild rapids on the water trails on the Cheat River , Elk River , and Coal River . These are more aggressive trails but there are plenty of stopping points on them where you can rest or have a picnic.

View of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia

While Harpers Ferry is a destination for adventure-seekers, it is also one of the best places in West Virginia to enjoy a weekend of historic immersion. Your first stop in Harpers Ferry should be Harpers Ferry National Historic Park , where you can spend a day or several days visiting museums with Civil War history, and other sites like John Brown Fort.

There are several nearby battlefields if you want to spend a day just visiting these historic sites. Shepherdstown Battlefield in nearby Shepherdstown and Summit Point Battlefield in Charles Town are two close options.

Since Harpers Ferry sits at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers, you can get a scenic perspective of the area from the Maryland Heights Overlook , where the view is especially beautiful at sunset. Fall is the busiest time on Harpers Ferry, so if you are planning to visit then, you will want to make reservations early for lodging and attractions that require tickets.

George Washington's bathtub in Berkeley Springs

The small town of Berkeley Springs lays claim to the first spa in the United States . Tucked into the West Virginia mountains, Berkeley Springs has a number of spa centers, mineral springs, and historic spas including George Washington's bathtub.

When you are ready to explore after a relaxing massage or mineral bath, make a stop at Berkeley Springs State Park , where you can see mineral springs and visit the historic Roman Bath House, which offers private walk-in tubs available by the half hour. For some outdoor recreation, you can take advantage of the park's golf course, hiking trails, and lake.

Berkeley Springs is an artsy town, so there are many local art galleries and cultural exhibits to experience. You can wrap up your relaxing weekend with a quiet dinner at one of the many locally owned restaurants in town.

While you’re in the area, plan a stop at  Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park . This site of a famous Civil War battle features a lookout tower, historic artifacts, and some hiking trails easy enough for the little ones.

-Soon after you cross the state line, head into Bluefield to have an early lunch at Gary Bowling’s House Of Art .  It’s filled with unique, beautiful pieces from floor to ceiling.  And the food is as good as the art.

-Take another detour to go snowtubing at Winterplace Ski resort .  Tickets are sold in 2 hour blocks, and there are no special skills or equipment you need.  Gravity + snow + an intertube = fun!

-Keep heading north, stopping in Beckley at the always wonderful Tamarack .  Even if you’re just window shopping, there’s still plenty to see.  Oh, and you’ll want to eat there too.  All the food is done by the Greenbrier- don’t miss it.

-Once you cross the New River Gorge Bridge, take a winter zip line tour at Adventure West Virginia Resort.  It’s kind of a cross between being Santa Claus and Tarzan.  If you’ve never done it, go.

– Bed down in a cabin near the Gauley River in Nicholas County.  Perfect Day.

See West Virginia in the winter, East To West

-Start at the Virginia state line, and leave that place behind.  Head straight for the lap of luxury at the Greenbrier Resort and take a tour of the once secret underground bunke r that was built to keep the president and congress safe.  Amazing.

-Head to the Monroe County line, near Lewisburg, to head underground once more to tour the Organ Cave . It’s a pretty good mix of natural and human history- not only do bats hide there, but about 3000 confederate soldiers hid out there during the civil war.

-Beckley again?  Try checking out some minor league Basketball at the Civic Center.  Seeing a West Virginia Blazers game is a great way to spend an afternoon.

-Head to Pineville and get out on the Hatfield and McCoy ATV trails .  Outfitters in the area have everything you need to get out and ride.  Talk about your winter wonderland.

-Finish up your day with some skating at the South Charleston Me morial Ice Skating Rink .  That’s right, skating.  You know you want to.

Those are a couple of seriously full days.  Whoever said there’s nothing to do in West Virginia during the wintertime just didn’t take the time to look.  Enjoy!

The Best Day Trips from Morgantown, West Virginia

Witness wild animals in their natural habitat or simply go chasing waterfalls on a tour for nature and wildlife lovers

West Virginia is filled with small towns that have a lot to offer, from outdoor activities to art galleries to breweries. At the intersection of the two major highways in the state, Morgantown is a great starting place for day trips in the region.

Canaan valley.

If you’ve had a taste of outdoor activities around Morgantown and are craving more, Canaan Valley offers excellent adventures year-round just two hours south. In the summer, the Dolly Sods Wilderness Area and Canaan Valley State Park offer short and long trails for hiking and mountain biking. In the winter, Canaan Valley State Park and Timberline Four Seasons Resort offer downhill skiing, and you can snowshoe or cross-country ski at Whitegrass. In nearby Davis, you can rent mountain and fat-tire snow bikes, get a giant burrito at Hellbender’s , or grab a freshly brewed beer at Stumptown Ales .

Close to Canaan Valley and the town of Davis is Thomas, West Virginia. For an easy walk to a beautiful view, drive to Blackwater Falls State Park and take the stairs down to the overlook of the 57-foot (17.5-meter) waterfall. Although the water might look dirty, the dark color is actually from natural tannins in decaying leaves from tributary streams. In Thomas, you can grab a drink at the Mountain State Brewing Company , the oldest micro-brewery in West Virginia. Along the waterfront, you can check out local artists at The White Room , catch a live band at the Purple Fiddle , or warm up with a latte at TipTop .

About an hour south of Morgantown, Buckhannon’s claim to fame might be the amazing donuts and pepperoni rolls at The Donut Shop , open 24 hours for whenever you get a craving. Main Street has antique shops and art galleries, and if you’re there on a Friday or Saturday night or a Sunday afternoon, catch a movie at the Lascaux Micro-Theater , a tiny basement venue that shows documentaries and independent films you can’t see in many other places in West Virginia. Just south of town, you can visit Ron Hinkle Glass and the showroom and glass-blowing studio, or you can explore the West Virginia Wildlife Center , a zoo run by the Department of Natural Resources that showcases local fauna.

Fallingwater

Fallingwater is an iconic piece of American architecture. Located in Mill Run, Pennsylvania, about an hour north of Morgantown, the house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright has served as a museum since 1964. Tours are offered every day from 10 am to 4 pm, except for Wednesdays, and tickets must be reserved in advance.

Drive into the town of Helvetia , West Virginia, and you’ll feel like you’ve been transported to a village in the Swiss Alps. Settled by Swiss immigrants in 1869, this village of about 50 people is worth a visit at the beginning of Lent for the Swiss carnival celebration known as Faschnacht, when everyone makes paper-mache masks, dances to the Helvetia Star Band, and burns Old Man Winter in effigy. If you miss the carnival, you can visit during other Swiss-inspired fairs or get a meal at the Hutte restaurant anytime.

Spruce Knob and Seneca Rocks

Deep in the Monongahela National Forest, Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area offers two of the most scenic views in all of West Virginia. About 2.5 hours south of Morgantown, the Seneca Rocks visitor center serves as the starting point for a 3.4-mile (5.5-kilometer) hike to the top of the rock formation. You can also rent climbing gear or get a climbing lesson to scale the rocks. A little farther south is Spruce Mountain, the tallest mountain in West Virginia. You can drive your car to the top and get an expansive view of the 1,500-square-mile (3,700-square-kilometer) national forest.

Wild, Wonderful West Virginia: Our 7 Day Road Trip Through the Mountain State

This post may contain affiliate links.

Welcome to wild, wonderful West Virginia! This remote Appalachian state is known for its ridged mountains and valleys, scenic rivers, and stunning rock formations. We did a 7-day road trip through the eastern part of the state and were completely swept away by its natural beauty. After seeing it firsthand, we now know exactly what John Denver was talking about. If you love the outdoors, West Virginia certainly is “almost heaven.”

Sunset at Nelson Rocks in West Virginia

Prior to our trip, we were traveling through Oregon when we were contacted by Travel Mindset . They were working on a campaign with the West Virginia tourism board and wanted to know if we were interested in covering some of the outdoor recreation in the state. Neither one of us had been there before, so we were having difficulty picturing the landscape in our minds. (For some reason we kept thinking of industrial coal mining.) Nevertheless, in the spirit of saying “yes” to life as it throws opportunities our way, we signed up. We haven’t visited a state yet that we haven’t appreciated. So off we went.

While we did a little bit of planning before arriving in West Virginia, it was actually a chance meeting with a local that set the agenda for the rest of the trip. Sitting at Black Sheep Burrito & Brews in Charleston, we struck up a conversation with a man named Dean, who used to live in San Francisco before relocating to West Virginia ten years ago. When we casually asked him if there was much to do outdoors here, he nearly fell out of his seat. Apparently, we had stumbled into an outdoor recreation mecca of the East and hadn’t even known it.

“World class whitewater, downhill mountain biking, tens of thousands of miles of incredible hiking, and some of the most spectacular rock formations on the planet.”

As Dean rattled off must-see places and activities, we quickly jotted down notes on a napkin. We had a rough itinerary already planned, but after talking with Dean, we basically scrapped it and just did what he told us. And we are so happy we did. If you ever find yourself in this situation, always take the advice of a local over whatever you find on Google.

We spent the next seven days traveling through the state and exploring all the amazing outdoor recreation it has to offer. While West Virginia wasn’t high on our travel bucket list before this assignment, we would happily go back there in a heartbeat.

Best Time to Go to West Virginia

Summer – Much of West Virginia has a subtropical climate, which means the summers there can be hot and sticky. It is one of the best places to visit in August , which is when we visited. It was sunny for most of the time, but occasionally a thunderstorm would roll through and break the heat. Due to the state’s mountainous terrain, there’s an increased risk of flooding in early summer, but towards the end of the summer, the rivers have mostly normalized. While fall is a more popular time to visit West Virginia, prices are generally higher and it will be more difficult to book hotels, campsites, and tours.

Fall – Everyone we spoke with said that fall is West Virginia’s busiest season. The temperature dips, the humidity breaks, and the leaves begin to turn all sorts of magnificent colors. Many of West Virginia’s biggest outdoor festivals are held during early to mid fall, including Snowshoe Freefall mountain bike festival and Gauley Fest whitewater rafting festival. Since this is peak season, hotels, campsites, and tours will be at full capacity and prices will generally be higher.

Getting to West Virginia

West Virginia is enigmatic in that it’s close to a lot of populous states, yet it feels distantly remote. Thankfully, depending on where you’re coming from, you have a couple of options.

Driving: If you’re anywhere in the mid-Atlantic states, Ohio River Valley, or Kentucky / Tennessee area, then you might want to consider taking a road trip up. Charleston, WV is about a 5 hour drive from Washington DC, Indianapolis, or Nashville.

Flying: Charleston, WV has a small airport with a few nonstop regional flights to Chicago, Houston, Washington DC, Philadelphia, and Atlanta. You can see the full map here . If you’re flying in from out west, you may want to connect through one of those cities or pick up a car in Washington DC and drive into the state.

Day by Day Itinerary

West Virginia has a lot to explore and we were on a timeline, so, unfortunately, we couldn’t make it to everything we wanted to see. While we always wish we had more time, if you only have a week than this itinerary should give you a pretty good impression of the state.

Day 1 – Charleston

Not only is Charleston is a great basecamp to explore the rest of West Virginia (all of the places we visited are less than 3 hours from here), but it is also a worthwhile destination on its own. Located along the Kanawha River, the city has a quaint downtown with a variety of up-and-coming shops and restaurants. While we stopped by a bunch of places during our stay here, these were our favorites:

Black Sheep Burrito & Brew – DO NOT MISS THIS PLACE. It’s an absolute gem. They serve the most delicious and innovative burritos and tacos we’ve ever tried (order their cashew wasabi ahi tuna taco! We’re still drooling over it.) They also have an impressive selection of craft beer, provided by the conjoined Charleston Brewing Company . If you appreciate a solid West-Coast IPA, order a pint of The Raj.

Taylor Books – A charming book store attached to an equally charming coffee shop, we stopped by here to do a little route planning before we had to leave Charleston. At this point, we were piecing together the suggestions Dean had given us the night before (which included Taylor Books), but we could have easily picked up a guide book here as well.

Day 2 – Summersville

On our second day, we drove out to Summersville Lake and camped at Battle Run Campground . On our way out we took the scenic route, which offered us our first glimpse of the rural life of the countryside.

Day 3 – Fayetteville

About 20 minutes south of Summersville is the historic town of Fayetteville. What this small town lacks in size it makes up for in charm. It’s also the hub for a lot of the rafting outfitters that operate on the New River and Gauley River.

Rafting with Adventures on the Gorge – The first – and most emphatic – suggestion Dean gave us was to go whitewater rafting. Between the Gauley River and the New River, there’s world-class whitewater just an hour outside of Charleston. Around the town of Fayetteville, there are a variety of rafting outfitters to choose from, but we opted to go with Adventures on the Gorge. This summer camp inspired resort has recently united a bunch of smaller tour operators, allowing them to offer dozens of activities like rafting, zip lining, ATVing, climbing, rope courses, paintballing, and a lot more, all from one central location. We could have spent the entire week there without getting bored.

White Water Rafting on the New River in West Virginia

Pies & Pints – We stopped here for a late-lunch after our half-day rafting trip and it was amazing. They had a great selection of artisanal pizzas and lots of local craft beers on tap. They have three main sitting areas: inside, an enclosed breezeway, and covered outdoor patio. It was a beautiful day, so we made the obvious choice and parked it on the patio.

Kool Beanz – After we loaded up on pizza and beer at Pies & Pints, we suddenly began to feel sleepy (I wonder why?) so we walked next door to Kool Beanz for a little pick me up. While we got our coffee to go, there looked to be ample space to sit down, relax, and perhaps get a little work done.

Beauty Mountain Trail in West Virginia

Day 4 – Summersville to Snowshoe

We broke down camp at Summersville Lake and started driving north towards Snowshoe Mountain. Again, we opted to take the scenic way and made the drive part of the adventure. Along the way we stopped at the waterfalls of Hill Creek, Cranberry Glades, and the small town of Marlinton.

Falls of Hill Creek – There are three different waterfalls here: Upper, Middle, and Lower Hill Creek Falls. While they all three spectacular in their own right, the lower falls has the special distinction of being the second highest in the entire state.

Michael walking on a wooden boardwalk through Cranberry Glades in West Virginia

Long wooden boardwalks have been constructed to allow you to venture deep into the glades without damaging the ecosystem and we spent the afternoon exploring the area. While the plant life was lush and green when we visited, we’ve seen photographs of it during the fall, and the entire field turns a deep crimson red. We will definitely have to come back later in the season to see that.

Dirtbean Cafe – We stopped in the sleepy yet quaint town of Marlinton for lunch. Without any cell service, we pretty much stumbled across Dirtbean Cafe while driving around and we’re so happy we did. This eclectic hole-in-the-wall was a cross between an organic cafe, bike shop, and a laid back coffee house. If you’re passing through this part of the world, you definitely should stop by.

Day 5 – Snowshoe Mountain

During the winter, Snowshoe Mountain is the southeast’s premiere ski destination, with crowds from the all over the south and D.C. area. During the summer, the downhill terrain transforms into a mountain biking paradise.

What’s interesting about Snowshoe Mountain is that the ski village is actually situated on top of the mountain. So all of your hotels, restaurants, and shops have spectacular views. It also means you never start your day with a line at the lifts. Just point yourself downhill and go.

Michael downhill Mountain Biking at Snowshoe in West Virginia

Our instructor Johanna was incredible and got us checked out on a mini-practice course before taking us out on some beginner trails. We’ve never had so much fun on a bike before. Rumbling over rocks, banking around corners, and splashing through mud puddles. It was a blast. We were just getting into the groove towards the end of our lesson, so we extended our rental for the rest of the day.

Foxfire Grill – We loved this place so much we ate here for lunch and for dinner. While Foxfire Grill offers the usual comfort foods you might from a ski resort restaurant, they really stand out in the condiment department. They offer a wide range of regional barbecue sauces, from Carolina to Lexington to Texas, that were out of this world. Doesn’t matter what you order here, just make sure you try some of the BBQ sauces with it!

Day 6 – Snowshoe to Circleville

After our stay at Snowshoe, we continued our way north to the small town of Circleville. While there isn’t anything particularly interesting in the town, just outside the town there are some of the most fascinating rock formations we’ve ever seen.

Megan Ziplining at NRocks in West Virginia

Seneca Rocks – We had no idea that West Virginia was home to such spectacular rock formations. We’ve traveled all over the American West and we’ve never seen anything like Seneca Rocks.

Seneca Rocks in West Virginia

This is one of the most popular spots in the state for rock climbing and the small town nearby seems perfectly set up to support that culture. Seneca Rocks also has a variety of hiking trails so non-climbers to explore the rocks as well. There’s even an observation deck if you can make it to the top. But a word of warning – it’s steep!

Day 7 – Circleville to Dolly Sods

Via Ferrata at Nelson Rocks – The term Via Ferrata literally means “iron road” in Italian and is a style of protected rock climbing that is designed to allow people with absolutely zero climbing experience to scale towering cliffs. While this style of climbing has been popular for years in the Italian Alps, NRocks was one of the first operations to bring it to the United States.

Michael traversing the NRocks Via Ferrata in West Virginia

Despite having a mild fear of heights, we signed up for this full day rock climbing experience and it completely blew our minds. In no time, we were scaling towering cliffs, passing over thousand-foot drops, and walking over an Indiana Jones style wooden bridge. Being able to get into those rock formations and see them from the top down, was an experience we will never forget.

Michael tying his shoes on the NRocks Via Ferrata in West Virginia

Bear Rocks in the Dolly Sods – With stunning vistas and unique localized ecology, the Dolly Sods Wilderness area is one West Virginia’s most precious hidden gems. This sprawling meadow contains alpine features like stunted trees, wind-carved boulders, heath barrens, and large peat bogs. Unlike the rest of the deciduous forest seen in the state, the Dolly Sods more closely resemble the type of dramatic landscape often found in the high sierras.

Bear Rocks, Dolly Sods Wilderness in West Virginia

Dozens of trails crisscross the nearly 30 square mile area. While the land is open to hikers, overnight backpackers, and horseback riders, there are no mechanized vehicles (including bicycles) allowed inside. Since it has been designated as wilderness area, this is done to keep the environment as untouched and wild as possible.

Towards the eastern side of the Sods, at the northern end of Forest Route 75, we spent some time exploring Bear Rocks. These windswept cliffs look to the east and would have been a spectacular place to catch the sunrise. But that will have to wait until we come back next time!

Our time in West Virginia was absolutely incredible. The state has so much to offer and we barely scratched the surface of it. But what really sticks out to was how easy it was access everything. There was no traffic, no hefty entry fees, no busy parking lots, no crowded trails, and no overbooked tours. We booked most of our activities the day before, we rolled into a campground on a Saturday and there were spots. And unlike some of the more popular outdoor destinations out West, there seemed to be enough natural beauty here to go around without people trampling over one another.

If you’re looking for outdoor adventure, West Virginia should absolutely be on the top of your bucket list. It’s one of the best kept secrets in the East and well worth a trip out. We can’t wait to go back.

LOVE West Virginia! We considered Fayetteville as the place we were going to make our youngest baby and stop traveling…but there wasn’t a single house for rent. The locals must know they’ve got something special or when new folks want to move in, they’ve got to be really dedicated.

Thomas and Davis, WV are gems, too, especially Thomas. So many cool traveling folks, musicians, and plenty of trails out that way.

We really loved Fayetteville, too, and had the same thoughts you did – maybe it would be a great place to set up a base camp in. Lots of outdoor rec nearby, reasonable driving distance to a ton of other spots in the South/mid-Atlantic/East coast. It had such a great vibe; reminded us a lot of the great mountain towns out West that are blowing up – but much smaller (and more affordable) of course!

We really wanted to check out the Davis area and explore Blackwater Falls SP! Sounds like a cool community. Unfortunately the weather completely fell apart on us, so we headed further East instead. But, have a feeling we’ll be back at some point, so that part of the state is high on our list.

So awesome to see “other” states getting some love 🙂 We have driven through WV dozens of times and always love, love, love the scenery. LOVE your blog – thanks for writing it!

Thanks for reading, Maria!

West Virginia had some of the most amazing, lush scenery we’ve seen (PNW included!). I can’t tell you how many times we turned to each other and said, “It’s so GREEN!” Maybe we have spent too much in the brown and dusty West, but we were just awestruck.

Fantastic! Even I haven’t gone in that place yet but it seems I’ve been there because you have perfectly discuss your travel experience. Thank you for sharing it with the world.

Love west Virginia.I haven’t gone there yet but would love to go once. The way you describe your travel experience it’s amazing..Thank you for sharing.

It’s a state that is definitely worth the trip!

It just amazing place, went one but possibly next trip will be Virginia again.

I really loved your blog post. Feeling good to see that other states also getting some attraction.

I am a proud, born and raised West Virginian, and I really enjoyed reading about your experiences. I remember when I was growing up, my parents would often take family day trips all around the state to visit various state parks and scenic attractions…mainly because it was a cheap way to have a family vacation. It never bothered me a bit, and I always had an amazing time, absolutely loving every moment of our travels. There is so much spiritual and breath taking beauty in this state, it is a shame that many people tend to overlook it. I hope you guys get to make another trip back soon, and can experience WV in the fall and winter. The fall foliage in the mountains is absolutely awe inspiring…second to none. I highly suggest the north overlook and tunnel trail/turkey spur at Grandview (only a few minutes from Beckley), and Sandstone Falls, Lindy Point and Blackwater Falls area, Spruce Knob (highest elevation in WV) and Bear Rocks/Dolly Sods again in the fall…it looks like another planet with all the different colors..

are their any cabins we can rent near the lake

What lake are you talking about?

What about traveling the state for those that can not do hiking / biking/kyaking as we are in our 70’s with some leg and health issues but love historical, unique and scenic locations of all sorts. Wish to drive to WV is fall for7-9 days and see as much that the state has to offer as possible including Harpers Ferry Blackwater falls state park and Midland trail. All other suggestions or itineray plans would be welcomed.

For sure you want to travel on Route 39 east from Richwood towards Mill Point. You’ll pass the Falls of Hills Creek and Cranberry Glades, both worthwhile stops. Before reaching Raintown, at the Cranberry Visitor Center, turn north onto Route 150 which is the Highland Scenic Highway. It runs through totally undeveloped mountain wilderness for 28 miles. When you reach the end follow Route 219 North to Snowshoe and take the 7 mile drive to the top of Snowshoe Mountain. Go down the back side of Snowshoe Mountain (Route 9/3) to Cass and visit the railroad and the Greenbrier River there. That’a a solid day trip from Richwood. Great lodging options at Snowshoe.

I’m 55, I have lived in West Virginia my entire life, and I do not think I will ever touch the surface of experiencing what this great state has to offer both its residents, visitors and tourists. There is something here for everyone of every age, no matter the interest. The talent that lives among the hills here is unfathomable and neverending. And when you hear the term “almost heaven” you cannot truly believe it until you experience it and then you will understand. It’s an amazing place, and the people make you feel like you’ve been part of the family forever. I just do not think outsiders truly knows what we have to offer here.

We can not wait to get back to West Virginia. It completely blew us away. Every small corner of that state has got something interesting going on. Each valley, each river, a new discovery. We can’t wait to go back and spend some more time there.

Thank you for this great article on my home of West Virginia. As a trout fisherman I’ve traveled many of the roads and to many of the areas that you described. You obviously covered a lot of this beautiful state but I do wish you had found time to add the Canaan Valley and the great mountain towns of Davis and Thomas. They have lots to offer.

Also, Green Bank is a spectacular sight set in the radio quiet zone and further north is the highest point in West Virginia, Spruce Knob. So much more to see.

We wish we had more time in the state! West Virginia just has so much to offer. Every valley, every river. There is just something magical. We can’t wait to go back and when we do, we’ll definitely hit up Canaan Valley and Green Bank.

Great info! Can you tell me what lake is featured in last picture ?

That was taken from Battle Run Campground along the bank of Summersville Lake.

Loved reading this! Im from WV (Now currently in Colorado)and camped multiple times in Dolly Sods and Seneca Rocks. My two favorite spots in WV, glad you got to enjoy them too! Now I’m going to try some of your delicious looking recipes for my adventures in Colorado!

We can’t wait to get back there! That trip is a really special memory for us that we would really like to revist.
