darjeeling gangtok trip plan

Visit Darjeeling or Gangtok first?

6 days/5 nights darjeeling & gangtok itinerary.

  • DAY1: Arrive at NJP/Bagdogra. Transfer to Darjeeling via Mirik by taxi (this is a longer but scenic route. Takes about 4.5 hours. Pre-paid taxis take shorter route. So you will need to pay a bit extra to the driver or take a separate taxi. You will see Mirik lake and lovely tea gardens on the way). However this is possible if you reach NJP/Bagdogra in the first half. Otherwise take the usual route (3.5 hours). Night stay in Darjeeling.
  • DAY2: Take 3-point tour early in the morning to watch sunrise over Mt. Kanchenjunga from Tiger Hill, followed by visit to Ghoom Monastery and famous Batasia Loop. Don't miss out on the Samosas (singaras) sold by the locals at Batasia. Come back and take your breakfast in the hotel. Later visit the Chowrasta Mall . Sit on a bench and Relax here for a while, then complete a round along Mall Road. Walk up the Observatory Hill to Mahakal Temple from the Mall road and soak in the views and wonderful ambience. In the afternoon, go for the 2-hour Toy Train Joy Ride. But book the tickets in advance. In the evening, take a stroll along Nehru Road through many shops and Bhutia stalls... do some shopping . Try to take your dinner at the famous Glenary's Restaurant. Overnight in Darjeeling.
  • DAY3: Take breakfast at Keventer's on the open roof terrace. You can get the famous full English breakfast here if you want. Then take a sightseeing tour of Darjeeling- go for either 7-point or mix point tour. The main attractions to cover are Happy Valley Tea Estate, HMI & Zoo, Tibetan Self Help Refugee Center, Tenzing Rock, Ropeway (cable car), Rock Garden etc. Take your dinner at The Park - a great Thai & Chinese restaurant on Laden La Road.
  • DAY4: Check out in the morning (by 8am), take a taxi from the stand and move to Gangtok (takes about 4 hours). Check into the hotel, freshen up and walk down to MG Marg, the hub of Gangtok - Smoke & vehicle free boulevard square with shops and restaurants lined up on both sides. A great place to sit on a bench and feel the carnival like ambience. Walk down to a restaurant, take a relaxed lunch. Post lunch, do some shopping. Also walk down to nearby Lal Bazaar for more shops. Remaining day at leisure. Overnight at Gangtok.
  • DAY5: Go for a full day 10-point sightseeing tour (see Gangtok sightseeing tours ).

Known for its small-leaved Chinese variety tea estates and the majestic view of the hulking high Kanchenjunga Peak, the hill station has been a favourite haunt for many around the world. The rustic charm of Darjeeling is also counted as the reason of it being liked by everyone and of course the colonial-era buildings make it look even more charming. Start the day with a beautiful sunrise from the highest point in Darjeeling, Tiger Hill. Then, make a short visit to Ghoom Monastery and Batasia Loop to get a fair idea of how beautiful Darjeeling is. Complete the day excursion with visit to Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, PNZ Zoological Park , Tenzing Rock, Tibetan Refuge Centre and the famed Tea Garden. Get the taste of the local food before leaving for the next and final destination of the tour, Gangtok.

Gangtok welcomes with its unspoilt natural beauty; alpine landscapes; thick luxuriant forests; torrent rivers and peaceful lakes. Gangtok is a serene destination that offers a glimpse of North East region. With humble and hospitable people and beautiful landscape, it is clearly a destination to die for. This capital of Sikkim is also a base camp for other gorgeous places in the state. It is a prominent hub for Buddhist culture and religion and a hotspot for shoppers, lovers, diners and fashionistas. There are handful of sightseeing places, each special in its own way. A walk through the meandering roads can enable one to learn everything about this slice of paradise. On our tour, along with getting acquainted with Gangtok, we shall explore the neighbouring destinations like Tsongmo Lake, which is situated close to Nathu La, the entry point to China. Tsongmo is the home to Brahmany Ducks and shelter for several migratory birds. We shall end our exploration by seeking the blessing of a Divine One at Baba Mandir, near the famed Tsongmo Lake.

Sikkim Darjeeling Tour

Shraddha Tulsankar Shilbad

Mumbai, Maharashtra

We availed services from NatureWings for our Sikkim Darjeeling Tour last month December 12, 2019. We had a great time and our itinerary was smoothly and efficiently managed without any hiccups. Special mention for Indrajit and Arpan who catered to our grievances immediately. The hotels were good and booked in some of the top localities across Sikkim and Darjeeling with good accessibility and all the transport facilities and vehicles were excellent. We would specially like to mention our driver in Darjeeling Mr. Pritam for his outstanding service and punctuality. Overall we found the package to be a little expensive since we had to pay separately for Nathula and zero point (total of Rs 6500 for both since it was subject to availability of vehicle permit) and an additional Rs 1200 for a halt at Buddha Park in Ravangla. I would like to give a minor suggestion to the team to include major tourist points that fall on the way for eg. in our case Chardham at Namchi and Buddha Park at Ravangla fell on our way to Pelling from Gangtok.

What is the best time to visit Gangtok?

darjeeling gangtok trip plan

Gangtok experiences pleasant weather during summers from April to June when temperature ranges from 18-degree Celsius to 25-degree Celsius. Monsoon arrives in July and stays till September. With rainfall, the temperature starts declining. Winter arrives with the month of October and ends in March. It can get quite cold in winters and temperature may fall down to 2-degree Celsius. Rhododendrons bloom from April to July. This is peak tourist season when Rhododendrons can be seen in their full glory, weather is pleasant and also because this is the time of summer vacations in schools. We chose to visit Gangtok in November when days were pleasant with sufficient sunshine and nights were cold.

Protected areas in Sikkim require Inner Line Permit for visiting. Foreigners must obtain Restricted Area Permit (formerly known as Inner Line Permit) to visit Sikkim.

Tsomgo lake.

Situated at a distance of 40 km from Gangtok, it is one of the top places to visit in this area. Transport is easily available from Gangtok and the lake is open 24 hours. The place has spectacular views and serenity. One can enjoy Yak ride here.

Nathu La Pass was once a part of the Silk route which was one of the most important trade routes in the world. This lies at the Indo-China border. MG Marg in Gangtok is very popular among locals and tourists. It is a completely litter free zone and no vehicles are allowed in this area. It is a great place to shop, eat and chill out. Approximately one km of a stretch of this road is a line up with shops and restaurants. Annual Gangtok Food and Culture Festival is held here every year in December. Spending time at this place felt like being in a foreign country because of the paved pathways, symmetrically lined shop and clean surroundings.

Most of the travelers coming to Darjeeling make it a point to experience sunrise at the Tiger Hill. It is located at a distance of 11 km from Darjeeling having an altitude of 2590 meter.

Travelers start arriving as early as 4 AM to witness the sunrise from this spot. When the snow-capped peaks of the Kanchenjunga are touched by the light of the dawn, they shine in beautiful colors.

There is an Observatory Tower at the top of the Tiger Hill. One can get better views of the mountains and peaks from here.

There is a ticket for different levels in the Observatory- INR 20 for ground level, INR 30 for 1 st floor and INR 40 for the top floor.

The place seemed very crowded with so many people arriving in a number of vehicles. Sunrise was definitely mesmerizing but the overall experience was not.

Batasia Loop

It takes around half an hour to reach here from Darjeeling by taxi. One can enjoy the complete view of Darjeeling town and surrounding mountains. Toy train passes through this loop on its journey.

A War Memorial is located at the center, surrounded by a garden full of seasonal flowers. We didn’t get a chance to enjoy the train ride as it required advance booking but we did watch is passing by slowly.

I chose to dress in the local traditional outfit and got some pictures clicked.

It is an open area located in the market. There are many shops and restaurants around it. It is a conjunction of roads and a popular place for events. You can find many people strolling around or just relaxing on the benches there. There are so many types of teas that I was not aware of.

I tasted a few different varieties of tea in a restaurant nearby.

Darjeeling city may look like an overcrowded place to some people as almost all the time it is bustling with tourists. Located at a distance of 50 km from Darjeeling and 80 km from Gangtok, Kalimpong is a quaint town that has managed to retain its ‘small hill-town’ charm.

After spending a week in these cities, I wanted to stay at a place where I could just relax doing nothing. Hence, Kalimpong was chosen and it seemed the right choice. I could just go for a stroll early in the morning or at sunset. I could take my cup of tea to the fields nearby, sit leisurely and look around at the mountains, fields and the sky above.

Is Gangtok safe?

Out of many places that I have been to in India, Gangtok seemed the safest one to me. People here seemed more open-minded and accepting to me. You can see youngsters, middle-aged people, older people, children, women all out in public places and enjoying themselves.

At many places in other cities, I have seen most of the public places being majorly occupied by men only. It was here I experienced this liberating and carefree feeling of wearing what I wanted and still not being stared at. Gangtok is very safe for travelers including solo women travelers but I would always advise practicing usual caution while traveling alone.
