What Does Battery Do in Cruise Ship Tycoon?

By Anna Duncan

cruise ship tycoon battery

Cruise Ship Tycoon is a unique business simulation game where players are tasked with managing a cruise ship. The game was developed by Deep Red Games and released in 2005 for PC and Mac platforms. The objective of the game is to create and manage a successful cruise ship business and make as much money as possible.

In Cruise Ship Tycoon, the player takes control of their own virtual cruise ship. They must manage their staff, ship and passengers, while also taking on various missions to earn money. The player must also balance their budget in order to keep their business afloat.

One important element of the game is the battery system. This system allows players to store energy that can be used later in the game.

The energy can be used to power various ship systems such as lights, AC systems and elevators. Energy can also be used to buy upgrades for the ship such as better cabins or additional facilities.

The amount of energy stored in the battery depends on how much the player has managed to save up during their time playing the game. Players can save up energy by completing missions or by conserving energy when not needed. Energy can also be purchased from other players or from stores within the game.

The battery system in Cruise Ship Tycoon allows players to store up energy which they can use later on to power various ship functions or purchase upgrades for their ships. Players must manage their budget carefully in order to ensure they have enough energy stored up when needed. It is an important part of successfully managing a profitable cruise ship business.

Gameplay [ ]

The aim of the game is to simply sail your ship with passengers towards any of the several islands in the game. you then get money from the trip that you could use to modify and buy newer and bigger ships. Mange the money properly or your company will go under (figuratively or literally).

Build and Passenger Mechanics [ ]

The first ship you receive as a new player has nothing inside, this is because the game wants you to add rooms and facilities to both your liking and the AI passengers liking. This means you can add rooms, pools, food booths and toilets anywhere in the ship.

Inside of ship

The interior of my ship

Passengers will rate your ship on what there is to offer for them e.g. they tell you that there aren't enough toilets on the ship or there aren't enough places for entertainment. All of this will change the star rating your ship and company has, having more stars gives you a money boost so its best to listen to what the passengers demands are.

There are a variety of fancier and bigger ships in that game that you could buy and customize to your disposal.

Cruise Ship Tycoon Review

Tycoon games succeed only when the strategy involved is rich, and since it isn't here, Cruise Ship Tycoon fails thoroughly.

By Carrie Gouskos on July 22, 2005 at 6:12PM PDT

Tycoonery reaches new ground (via the ocean floor) with Cruise Ship Tycoon, a simulator that lets you customize and then populate a luxury cruiseliner in search of both monetary and reputation-based rewards. Although the concept is a decent one, as long as you're a fan of corporate megadynasties, the strategy in Cruise Ship Tycoon is almost nonexistent. You can buy and sell all kinds of cool gadgets for your ship, but there's no logic involved in the guest complaints, and the game simply needs more options. Tycoon games succeed only when the strategy involved is rich, and since it isn't here, Cruise Ship Tycoon fails thoroughly.

Sit back and relax on a statistics screen to the sounds of the steel drum.

You begin the game with a fairly large ship and $50,000. The first thing to do in the game is equip your ship with staterooms, facilities, eateries, and entertainment. With the money you have, you can hook your ship up fairly well in the beginning, especially if you're willing to start off with only a few passengers and build more accommodations later on. Once you've done your shopping, the next task is to pick a destination. You can cruise in the Caribbean, Mexican East (which goes from New Orleans to Cozumel), Mediterranean, or the Hawaiian Islands. The cruises range from two days to a week, based on where you're going, but otherwise the destinations seem to have no bearing on the game.

The next step is booking the cruise. The number of people who come aboard is automatically (and randomly) determined, based on how many rooms you have. It seems like reputation should play a role here, but even if your reputation goes up and you don't get more rooms, you'll almost never fill all of the rooms you have. In fact, without significant changes to your ship, you'll probably pull in the exact same number of cruisers every single time you leave port. This is one example of where the game could have used more strategic depth. During all of these planning screens, an icon of the ship at the top of the screen shows how much of it is devoted to lodging, food, and entertainment. After a certain point, you will be physically forced to stop building because there's no room for your intended service, although you can always sell and buy anything on the ship.

After setting sail, you can switch back and forth between a few screens. The status screen indicates a few statistics, like how much money you're making throughout the cruise. You can also switch to camera mode, which shows a primitive picture of the deck, filled with patrons who might or might not have bubbles over their heads indicating what their needs are. The most important screen is the text box that fills up with their complaints. It is important to keep your guests happy by having more facilities than they could possibly use, but even when you do that, the things they ask for often make no sense. A boat with 12 passengers and three bars might request more bars, which is absurd, given how much space a bar takes up. Sometimes the requests are totally nebulous, such as, "I have been waiting for more than two hours," which tells you nothing about what service you're lacking. Ships packed full of pools, arcades, and bars will still have people asking for more entertainment, and there's no immediate correlation between a patron's "stress" and whatever might be causing it.

These people clearly need more bars, since three isn't enough.

The graphics in the game aren't great on the LG VX7000. The text, which you'll be dealing with extensively, is clumped into large paragraphs and is filled with typos. The camera, which gives you the only view of the game outside of text boxes and stat windows, shows a few Lego-shaped people milling about on an average-looking deck. The sound is nice for a while, composed of a short steel drum riff that is quite reminiscent of the Caribbean, but after a short period of time, the quick loop will get repetitive, and since it has no bearing on the game other than mood, there's no reason to play it.

If you could work more directly with complaints in Cruise Ship Tycoon, find additional services for your ship, and upgrade more thoroughly, then there might be enough strategy in this game to merit playing it. As it is, your only reward is a worldwide leaderboard already covered with people who have over a billion dollars. Your time would be better spent saving up for a real cruise than playing this game.

  • Leave Blank
  • It's a new take on the tycoon thing
  • The steel drum is kind of nice
  • There is no strategy
  • Not enough options
  • The graphics are pretty blah

5 Battery-Powered Cruise Ships Leading the Zero Emission Charge

J. Souza

A new wave of battery-powered ships has recently emerged that promises to revolutionize cruising and reduce its environmental impact.

In this article, we will explore five different battery-powered cruise ships and companies that are leading the charge in green maritime transportation.

electric cruise ships

Every car company is already making electric cars. Are cruise lines going to start building battery-powered cruise ships next? Or are these floating cities just too large for the “current” battery technology?

Well, don’t look now, but the move toward greener propulsion in cruise ships is already happening, and has been happening for the last several years, at least in its initial stages.

There are already battery-powered tugboats, container ships, and ferries currently operating around the world. Cruise ships require a lot more power, and it’s more challenging to power them with battery power alone, but the ships in this article are making major headway in that direction.

In this article we will look at five different cruise companies that are sailing electric vessels and are at least partially powered by lithium-ion battery systems on board.

The cruise industry is set to undergo a transformation with Norway’s upcoming environmental legislation. Beginning in 2026, ships will be banned from entering select fjords using traditional fuels. This new rule will drive the use of batteries in the industry and some ships are already using battery-powered systems to sail along the coast of Norway.

This video shows how the battery company, Corvus Energy, is allowing even large cruise ships to operate with battery power:

Here are 5 cruise lines already using batteries in their ships, and how it could pave the path forward for parts of the industry:

AIDA Cruises

cruise ship tycoon battery

AIDA Cruises is using the biggest battery ever placed on a cruise ship of this size . The Carnival Corporation & plc owned cruise line is using a Corvis Energy battery.

The 10 megawatt-hour battery consists of 1,800 modules. Due to it’s size, AIDA had to remove one of the unused water tanks on the ship, AIDAperla , the 125,000 gross ton vessel being powered by electricity.

The installation of the 10,000 kWh lithium-ion battery system was the first to be used on a large cruise ship like this.  AIDAperla carries over 4,000 guests and is 984 feet in length.

At the time of the battery’s installation, the Chief Commercial Officer of Corvis, Halvard Hauso, said, “This will be the world’s biggest battery installation on board a ship to date. The project shows it is possible to retrofit even quite large energy storage solutions on board cruise and passenger ships. It is however challenging to find enough available space as the volume of the batteries is quite substantial. For a new building this is much easier as you can plan it from the design phase.”

And 10 megawatt-hours is just the beginning.

The company expects new builds in the future to see batteries of 50,000 kWh to 100,000 kWh, that’s 100 megawatt-hours of power.

This electric power allows the cruise ship to sail in and out of ports using battery propulsion alone. This makes for smoother sailing and fewer contaminates in the air.

Havila Voyages

Havila Voyages operates four cruise ships along the coast of Norway. Each vessel is powered by some of the largest battery packs at sea and can operate for up to four straight hours on battery power alone . This allows for quiet, smooth sailings into the gorgeous fjords of Norway.

These 6.1 megawatt-hour battery packs (or 6,100 kWh) are supplied by Corvus Energy and weigh about 86 tons.

How are these batteries charged? When on shore Havila uses hydro-power electricity to charge the batteries. When the ships are in open waters and need more power they rely on LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) which is used alongside the batteries for a hybrid operation.

The company’s ships carry 680 passengers and were all built in the last few years. Havila Voyages is owned by the Norwegian shipping company Havila Shipping ASA.

Hurtigruten

MS Roald Amundsen hurtigruten

Another cruise line that sails along the coast of Norway is Hurtigruten . In fact, the company sails to all kinds of arctic regions and specializes in expedition style, and destination focused travel.

And besides all that, almost every ship in the fleet is a hybrid vessel with at least 3 being battery-hybrid-powered ships. Over the last several years Hurtigruten has worked to transform even their older ships into battery-powered and LNG powered ships that can sail in and out of Norwegian ports cleanly and silently.

MS Roald Amundsen was the first hybrid ship in the fleet and its debut in 2019 marked the first time this hybrid technology was used on a ship of this size. The ship has two 685 kWh lithium-ion batteries with room for expansion later on.

The 500-passenger ship can run on battery power for about 45 minutes to an hour.

The batteries are also used for what is called “peak shaving”. The goal of peak shaving is to reduce the need for the ship’s main power generation systems to work at full capacity during periods of high demand, thereby reducing wear and tear on the system and potentially reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

cruise ship tycoon battery

Viking Cruises is world-renowned for their Viking Longships, which sail along the rivers of Europe and throughout the world.  And now some of these vessels offer a hybrid propulsion system that uses battery power in combination with diesel fuel.

The large-capacity battery packs on ships like Viking Egdir, Viking Fjorgyn, Viking Radgrid and Viking Gymir are charged in port and also by roof-mounted solar panels.

The batteries on these ships have a capacity of 745 kWh.

These vessels are also equipped with the ability to connect to shore power when in port to reduce reliance on fuel.

The company also recently reported testing out hydrogen fuel cells on one of its ocean ships in a step towards reducing the reliance on traditional fuels.

The Yangtze River Three Gorges 1

And then there’s the vessel made in China that has been touted as the “worlds largest electric cruise ship”.

The Yangtze River Three Gorges 1 is not a hybrid. It is 100% powered by a 7,500 kWh battery system.

The 300-foot long ship is not really a cruise ship but is designed as a sightseeing vessel along the Yangtze River in China.

The $23 million ship debuted in early 2022 and is able to carry over 1,000 passengers. The downside is it can only travel for about 62 miles on one charge.

Final Thoughts

Battery-powered cruise ships are an eco-friendly innovation with some attractive benefits. They emit zero pollutants, making them ideal for sensitive areas like coastal waters. They’re also quieter, offering a more enjoyable experience for passengers and crew. Cost-wise, they’re cheaper to run since they don’t need fuel, potentially leading to lower fares and higher profits.

However, building battery-powered cruise ships is more expensive due to evolving battery tech. They also have limited range, unsuitable for long-haul journeys. Charging them can be time-consuming, affecting their flexibility.

This electric cruise ship will use three giant retractable solar panels to power it at sea

Avatar for Peter Johnson

On Wednesday, Norwegian cruise line company Hurtigruten revealed plans for a first-of-its-kind zero-emission ship. The electric-powered cruise ship will feature retractable sails with solar panels to harness energy from the wind and sun while storing it in powerful batteries.

Meet the most energy-efficient electric, solar cruise ship

Although only 0.1% of Hurtigruten Norway’s ships currently use zero-emission technology, the company is planning a drastic overhaul.

Its first concept, “Sea Zero,” is expected to be the world’s most energy-efficient cruise ship. The company initially revealed the project last March as part of its ambition to become a leader in sustainable travel.

Its first electric cruise ship, due out in 2030, will combine 60 MWh battery packs with several industry firsts to harness wind and solar while at sea for a truly zero-emission experience.

For example, the company plans to include three retractable, autonomous sails with added solar panels. The wing rigs are designed to enhance aerodynamics, pulling in air currents at up to 50 meters for added propulsion.

Electric-solar-cruise-ship

Hurtigruten says that during the summer, the ship “will be superpowered by northern Norway’s midnight sun that shines for 24 hours a day.”

The three retractable wings will comprise 1500 m² (16,146 ft²) of solar panels with a total wind surface of 750 m² (8,073 ft²).

Electric-solar-cruise-ship-2

Renewable energy from the sails or the charging port is stored in the ship’s giant 60 MWh battery storage system. There’s even an indicator on the side of the vessel to show the battery level. The company says it’s looking for cobalt-free battery chemistries with minimal nickel to keep costs down.

Enhancing energy efficiency

With dozens of sensors and cameras and AI maneuvering, the company says the size of the bridge can be slimmed down and set up like an airline cockpit.

Electric-solar-cruise-ship

The design enhances aerodynamics and gives guests more living space and areas to enjoy the views.

To reduce underwater drag, the two thrusters at the stern will retract into the hull while cruising. Meanwhile, the company is developing an underwater air lubrication system to allow the electric ship to “surf” on a carpet of bubbles.

Hurtigruten says its guests will play an integral role in reducing energy consumption with data-driven solutions allowing them to control and monitor energy use directly from their smartphones.

Impressive, hopefully other shipping companies have similar plans.

The electric solar-powered cruise ship concept is 443 feet long and is set to host 500 passengers across 270 cabins.

Sea Zero is still in its early stages of research and development as the Norwegian cruise line gears up for its launch by 2030. Over the next two years, the company will test and develop the proposed technology as it works toward a final design.

Currently, the focus is on battery production, propulsion technology, hull design, and other sustainable practices that can reduce energy consumption.

Hurtigruten says developing new tech for onboard hotel operations, which consumes up to 50% of the ship’s total energy use, will be critical to the ship’s success. The company aims for a 50% energy reduction compared to current models.

The missile cruiser Moskva, named in honor of the Russian capital, was launched during the Cold War, saw service during conflicts in Georgia, Syria and Ukraine, and helped conduct peacetime scientific research with the United States.

Now the flagship of Russia’s Black Sea fleet has sunk in those waters off Ukraine while being towed to port after a fire onboard, the Defense Ministry in Moscow said.

It was an inglorious demise for the vessel initially christened the Slava, or “glory.”

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE WARSHIP?

The Russian Defense Ministry said the heavily damaged Moskva sank in a storm Thursday under tow after being gutted by fire. It previously said the blaze set off some of its weapons and forced the crew to evacuate. It denied there had been an attack by Ukraine on the ship, which would normally have about 500 sailors aboard.

Maksym Marchenko, the governor of the Odesa region, said Ukraine struck the ship late Wednesday with two Neptune missiles and caused “serious damage.” Yuriy Sak, an adviser to Ukraine’s defense minister, later said he was unable to confirm its fate or if it even had been hit by Ukrainian forces.

It was not immediately possible to reconcile the different accounts, and cloud cover made it impossible to locate the ship or determine its condition from satellite photos. The U.S. was unable to confirm Ukraine’s claims.

The Moskva was about 69 miles (100 to 104 kilometers) due south of Odesa when the fire occurred, according to a senior U.S. defense official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal U.S. military assessments.

WHAT WAS THE WARSHIP’S CAPABILITY?

The Moskva could carry 16 long-range cruise missiles, and its loss will greatly reduce Russia’s firepower in the Black Sea.

Its sinking represents a major blow to Russian prestige seven weeks into a war that already is widely seen as a historic blunder.

WHAT WAS ITS HISTORY?

The warship was launched as the Slava from a shipyard in Mykolaiv in what was then the Soviet republic of Ukraine in July 1979, according to open-source intelligence firm Janes. Commissioned in late December 1982, it was 611.5 feet (186 meters) long. It was designed to carry a crew of 476 with an additional 62 officers.

The Slava served as the flagship of the Soviet fleet in the Black Sea. It carried both surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles, deck guns, torpedoes and mortars. It also had a helicopter deck.

During the Cold War, it also carried nuclear weapons. In 1989, under Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, U.S. and Soviet scientists took part in a joint test abroad the Slava in the Black Sea to measure the emission of neutrons and gamma rays from a nuclear warhead on a cruise missile.

In late 1989, the Slava was supposed to host a meeting off Malta between Gorbachev and then-President George H.W. Bush, but gale force winds prompted the Soviet-hosted side of the talks to be held instead on the docked cruiser Maxim Gorky.

FROM SLAVA TO MOSKVA

The Slava underwent repairs from 1990-1999. During that time, the Soviet Union collapsed, an independent Ukraine emerged and Russia’s economy foundered. Finally overhauled and rechristened the Moskva, the ship hosted both President Vladimir Putin and then-Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi during a 2003 visit to Sardinia.

“Thank God, our cruisers can still go on their own, our planes and missiles can fly,” Putin said at the time.

Putin’s later comments at the La Maddalena naval base show how much has changed. He described the Moskva’s presence as a sign that “the level of trust between Russia and the NATO countries is rising.” NATO’s eastward expansion and Russian security were among the reasons Putin cited for sending troops to Ukraine.

During Russia’s war in its former republic of Georgia in 2008, the Moskva took part in operations in the Black Sea, and Georgia said it was involved in an attack on the country.

In 2014, as Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula, the Moskva blocked Ukrainian naval vessels from leaving Lake Donuzlav.

In 2015-16, it was deployed to the Mediterranean Sea to provide support for the Russian military campaign backing Syrian President Bashar Assad in his country’s civil war. Its sailors were decorated for their service there and in the war on Georgia.

The Moskva underwent repairs and modernization from 2018 to July 2020, according to Janes.

After Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, the Moskva took part in an attack on Zmiinyi — or Snake — Island, which sits about 35 kilometers (21 miles) off the coast. In an audio widely circulated online, a Ukrainian soldier responds: “Russian warship, go (expletive) yourself.”

The Associated Press cannot independently verify the incident, but Ukraine and its supporters consider it an iconic moment of defiance.

On Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Instagram account posted a photo of him holding commemorative stamps marking the purported moment. They show a lone Ukrainian soldier on a beach, rifle in one hand, the other giving the middle finger to the passing Moskva, its “121” ship number visible on it.

Ship Speeds [ ]

Each ship has weight and speed, the more generators, solar panels or nuclear reactors you have the faster you go, but some ships have hard limits to their speed, split between weight and speed.

The following list was made using 60MW of power (3 nuclear reactors and 40 generators then averaged the two results. No batteries or solar panels were used.) as the unit of measurement with the ships being ordered in speed. Top possible speed was found by loading the ships with nothing but batteries.

  • The Heron - Forward speed : 68.9 Knots - Reverse speed : 52 Knots - Top possible speed : 145.57 Knots ( Full Battery Ship )
  • The Raven - Forward speed : 65 Knots - Reverse speed : 42.3 Knots - Top possible speed : 145 Knots
  • The Mallard - Forward speed : 44.51 Knots - Reverse speed : 31.325 Knots - Top possible speed : 122 Knots
  • The Pelican - Forward speed : 34.08 Knots - Reverse speed : 25.215 Knots - Top possible speed : 107 Knots
  • The Osprey - Forward speed : 25.77 Knots - Reverse speed : 19.92 Knots - Top possible speed : 101 Knots
  • The Albatross - Forward speed : 21.9 Knots - Reverse speed : 16.52 Knots - Top possible speed : 99 Knots
  • Not tested : Cormorant, Titanic & Golden
  • All ships in the game are named after a species of bird, with the exception being the Titanic , which is named after a real ship.
  • The Pelican is sometimes referred to as the "Bankruptcy Ship", due to its relatively inferior default speed and relative efficiency when compared with other ships, and some advise players to skip it and directly go to the Osprey .
  • Most players refer to the Raven as 'The Yacht', due to its design.

Ukraine war latest: Armed ship destroyed in Crimea, Kyiv says; controversial US television host launches show in Russia

Ukraine says it hit and destroyed the Russian missile ship Tsiklon in Crimea over the weekend. Meanwhile, analysts say Moscow is seeking to draw out Kyiv's forces - as Putin makes another significant change to his cabinet.

Vladimir Putin has praised the late president of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, and said he was a "reliable partner".

Raisi was killed in a helicopter crash near the Azerbaijan border over the weekend along with his foreign minister and seven others.

Speaking on the leader, Mr Putin said he was "a man of his word" who carried out any agreements the pair made.

"He was truly a reliable partner, a man sure of himself, who acted in the national interest," Russian news agencies quoted Mr Putin as telling Vyacheslav Volodin, chairman of Russia's lower house of parliament.

"He was, of course, a man of his word and it was always good to work with him. What I mean is if we came to an agreement on something, you could be sure the agreement was carried out."

The Kremlin leader asked Mr Volodin, who will be attending memorial events in Iran, to pass on "words of our sincere condolences in connection with this tragedy".

Since the start of the war in Ukraine, Russia has strengthened political, trade and military ties with Iran in a deepening relationship that the US and Israel view with concern.

Heavy fighting in the Pokrovsk area in eastern Ukraine has forced Ukrainian troops to engage in "manoeuvres," the Ukrainian military's general staff have said.

Their report said Pokrovsk, northwest of the Russian-held city of Donetsk, remains the front's "hottest" sector.

"In some areas, the situation requires our troops to engage in manoeuvres," the general staff report reads.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has referred to the region and adjacent areas as "extraordinarily difficult" in his nightly video address.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said allies are taking too long when it comes to decisions on military support for Ukraine.

In an interview with Reuters, the Ukrainian leader said every decision which everyone came to was "late by around one year".

"But it is what it is: one big step forward, but before that two steps back. So we need to change the paradigm a little bit," he said.

"When we're quick, they fall behind. And then there's a gap - six, eight months of unpassed (aid) packages, and then two-three months of supplies - and a year goes by. We would like not to lose the advantage."

Mr Zelenskyy also said Ukraine had never used Western weapons on Russian territory.

A senior Russian diplomat has said that the EU plan to channel profits from frozen Russian assets to Ukraine would have "unpredictable" consequences, according to the TASS news agency.

According to TASS, Kirill Logvinov, Russia's acting permanent representative to the EU in Brussels, told Russia journalists: "The only predictable thing is that those in the EU will be obliged sooner or later to return to our country what has been stolen."

For context : In March the European Commission proposed transferring to Ukraine profits generated by Russian central bank assets frozen in Europe.

The plan would see 90% channeled through the European Peace Facility fund to buy weapons for Ukraine.

The rest would be used for recovery and reconstruction.

Russia's defence ministry has said it has begun a round of drills involving tactical nuclear weapons.

The exercises were announced by Russian authorities this month in response to remarks by senior Western officials about the possibility of deeper involvement in the war in Ukraine.

It was the first time Russia has publicly announced drills involving tactical nuclear weapons, although its strategic nuclear forces regularly hold exercises.

According to the ministry's statement, the first stage of the new drills include nuclear-capable Kinzhal and Iskander missiles.

The maneuvers are taking place in the southern military district, which consists of Russian regions in the south.

A Moscow court has ordered a Russian journalist who covered the trials of the late Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny and other dissidents must  remain in custody pending an investigation and trial on charges of extremism.

Antonina Favorskaya was arrested in March.

She is accused of collecting material, producing and editing videos and publications for Navalny's Foundation for Fighting Corruption, which had been outlawed as extremist by Russian authorities, according to court officials.

Today, Moscow's Basmanny district court ordered that she remain in custody until at least 3 August.

Kira Yarmysh, Navalny's spokeswoman, said earlier that Ms Favorskaya did not publish anything on the foundation's platforms and suggested that Russian authorities have targeted her because she was doing her job as a journalist.

Former Fox News presenter Tucker Carlson has launched his own show in Russia.

The controversial US media personality, who this year became the first Western journalist to interview Vladimir Putin since Russia invaded Ukraine, will host his show on the state-owned Russia 24 (Rossiya 24).

In the first episode, Carlson will discuss the dangers of ticks and Lyme disease.

Who is Carlson?

Carlson, who has been a vocal supporter of Mr Putin in the past, was sacked from Fox News in April last year.

He took up the prime-time weekday evenings spot on Fox News in 2016 with his show Tucker Carlson Tonight, and quickly established himself as a key player in the network and an influential voice in Republican politics.

The presenter often embraced conspiracy theories and far-right issues. He repeatedly questioned the efficacy of COVID vaccines and compared mandates to "Nazi experiments".

While he found success with viewers, his inflammatory comments caused some advertisers to distance themselves from the programme.

After his departure from Fox News he rebooted his show on X last year, calling Elon Musk's site the last big remaining platform to allow free speech.

Ukraine says it has destroyed the last Russian warship armed with cruise missiles that was stationed on the occupied peninsula of Crimea.

It comes after we reported earlier comments by Ukraine's military, which said they had hit the Russian missile ship Tsiklon (see post at 3.09pm).

Ukraine's military reported conducting a long-range attack that destroyed the Russian minesweeping navy vessel on Sunday and said it needed more time to confirm what else had been damaged.

"According to updated information, the Ukrainian defence forces hit a Russian project 22800 Tsiklon missile ship in Sevastopol, on the night of 19 May," the general staff said today.

The Ukrainian navy later said on X that the vessel had been "destroyed".

Ukrainian navy spokesperson Dmytro Pletenchuk said the Tsiklon was Russia's "last cruise missile carrier" based on the peninsula.

Tsiklon never fired a cruise missile while on active service, Mr Pletenchuk said in televised comments.

Crimea was annexed by Russia in 2014 and is home to Russia's Black Sea Fleet headquarters at Sevastopol.

The Russian defence ministry has not commented.

European Union countries say they have reached an agreement to use the profits from frozen Russian assets to provide military support to Ukraine and help rebuild the war-torn country.

The 27-nation EU is holding around €210bn (ÂŁ179bn) in Russian central bank assets, most of it frozen in Belgium, in retaliation for Moscow's war against Ukraine.

It estimates that the interest on that money could provide around €3bn (£2.56bn) each year.

Ukraine is desperate for more weapons and ammunition as Russia presses its military advantage.

EU headquarters said 90% of the money would be put into a special fund known as the European Peace Facility that many EU countries already use to get reimbursed for arms and ammunition they send to Ukraine.

The other 10% would be put into the EU budget. The programmes that this money funds would help to bolster Ukraine's defence industry or to help with reconstruction, should some countries object to their share being used for military purposes.

A small group of member states, notably Hungary, refuse to supply weapons to Ukraine.

Moldova has signed a security and defence partnership with the European Union, the first country to agree such a deal with the bloc.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell made the announcement today.

It follows Moldova's strong condemnation of Russia's invasion of neighbouring Ukraine.

Led by pro-European President Maia Sandu, Moldova, which lies between Ukraine and NATO and EU member Romania, hopes to join the European Union by 2030.

"This partnership will enhance the country's resilience. It will allow (us) to jointly address common security challenges, make our engagement more effective and explore new areas of cooperation," Mr Borrell wrote on X.

Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean said on the X social media platform that EU accession would be the best "mechanism to ensure peace & stability for Moldova's citizens".

"Until then, the signing of the EU-Moldova Security and Defence Partnership is a step forward, enhancing our peace, security, and prosperity," he wrote.

Moldova gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 and its relations with Moscow have deteriorated during Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
