About Counting Crows:

For more than two decades, the GRAMMY and Academy Award-nominated rock band Counting Crows have enchanted listeners worldwide with their intensely soulful and intricate take on timeless rock & roll. Exploding onto the music scene in 1993 with their multi-platinum breakout album, August and Everything After, the band has gone on to release seven studio albums, selling more than 20 million records worldwide, and is revered as one of the world’s most pre-eminent live touring rock bands.

In October 1996, the band's double-platinum sophomore studio album, Recovering the Satellites , debuted at number one and further solidified their growing reputation as one of the leading American alternative rock bands in the world. A follow-up to their early success, Counting Crows went on to release This Desert Life (1999), Hard Candy (2002), Saturday Nights & Sunday Mornings (2008), Underwater Sunshine (Or What We Did on Our Summer Vacation) (2012), Echoes of the Outlaw Roadshow (2013) and Somewhere Under Wonderland (2014.) In 2004, Counting Crows recorded the chart-topping “Accidentally in Love” for the animated motion picture Shrek 2. The instant success of the track earned them an Academy Award nomination for “Best Original Song” at the 2005 Academy Awards, a Golden Globe nomination for “Best Original Song” and a GRAMMY Award nomination for “Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media.”

In September 2014, Counting Crows released their critically acclaimed seventh studio album, Somewhere Under Wonderland , which debuted at No. 10 on the charts and was heralded by The Daily Telegraph as “… the best collection of songs since their debut.” The album consisted of nine sprawling tracks around rich sonic tapestries, which yielded some of the most grandiose yet intimate songs Counting Crows had recorded to date. 2018 marked 25 years since the band's inception and sent Adam Duritz, Jim Bogios, David Bryson, Charlie Gillingham, David Immergluck, Millard Powers, and Dan Vickrey back on the road for the “25 YEARS AND COUNTING” tour. In 2021, Counting Crows ranked #8 on Billboard’s “Greatest of All Time: Adult Alternative Artists” 25th-anniversary chart.

After seven years, Adam Duritz and Counting Crows released Butter Miracle: Suite One in May 2021 to rave reviews. The band also kicked off their first tour since 2018, “The Butter Miracle Tour,” from 2021 through 2023, with sell-out performances across North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

Counting Crows is an American rock band that hails from the San Francisco Bay area in CA, U.S. They formed in 1991 and have sold more than 20 million records worldwide.

The group was originally comprised of acoustic duo Adam Duritz and guitarist David Bryson. They spent their early musical career playing coffee shop gigs in San Francisco. The two were interested in recording demos as a band and additional members bassist Matt Malley, keyboardist Charlie Gillingham, and drummer Steve Bowman completed the beginnings of what would be Counting Crows. The band’s name alludes to the British nursery rhyme “One For Sorrow.”

The year 1993 became a turning point for the band. First they were asked to perform at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony as a last minute substitute for Van Morrison. Later that year Counting Crows was signed to Geffen Records and released their debut album “August and Everything After.” They supported the album by joining tours with Bob Dylan, Los Lobos, and the Cranberries. The album’s single “Mr. Jones” exploded on the airwaves and the video became widely requested on MTV. The album stayed on the charts for an impressive 93 weeks starting in 1994. The acknowledgement led them to tour with the Rolling Stones during that same year.

With the addition of drummer Ben Mize and guitarist Dan Vickrey, Counting Crows released their sophomore album “Recovering the Satellites” in 1995. It reached No. 1 in 1996 and songs like “A Long December” and “Have You Seen Me Lately” became hits. Counting Crows has had success in the film industry. Their song “Accidentally in Love” was featured on the animated film “Shrek 2”’ soundtrack and they received nominations for a Grammy, Oscar, and Golden Globe Award for their contribution.

Counting Crows cites Van Morrison, R.E.M., Mike + The Mechanics, Nirvana, Bob Dylan, and Nirvana as their musical influences.

Live reviews

This gig was marketed as part of Bluesfest and thus you got 3 bands for the price of one. The opening act was The White Buffalo. When they took to the stage there weren't many people in the arena, but those that were there got a real treat. The White Buffalo are a 3 piece band playing a mix of blues and ballads and went down well with those that were there to see them. Really enjoyed their set.

Then after a change of stage set Alison Krauss came on. Alison has a beautiful voice complimented by the two members of the The Cox Family. Alison also plays fiddle, and the crowd were treated to a mixture of country and folk music.

Then the headline act. I was disappointed to see the O2 Arena had not sold out this gig, especially as the Crows played two sell out concerts there back in 2014. Also the Arena had curtained off the upper tier so the O2 was probably only really half full, if that. With the London gig following the Dublin gig these were the only two venues on the tour for the UK and Ireland so I was surprised not to see a bigger crowd.

No matter, the Crows were playing the last night of their worldwide tour celebrating 25 years and didn't disappoint. This concert leant heavily on the August And Everything album with songs like Mr Jones, Omaha, Rain King, Round Here, Raining in Baltimore and Murder of One. They also played a Teenage Fanclub number that they usually play in the warm-up earlier in the day, and a favourite of mine, Mrs Potter's Lullaby. Adam likes to chat to the audience and explained the background to nearly every song. As is quite often the case the the sound mix was not quite right for the opening numbers and Adam's vocals were slightly drowned out by the instruments, but once the mix was right the Crows really got into their stride. They finished with Holiday in Spain and you came away feeling you had your money's worth. It was the first time in 25 years I had seen the Crows live and was determined no to miss them this time they came to the UK. I thoroughly enjoyed the show.

The lack of response to my invite to go see Counting Crows on Thursday night wasn’t surprising. Even the lure of comp’d tickets wouldn’t budge those in my social circle. There is a part of me that understands this, but I do not understand confusing Counting Crows with the likes of Gin Blossoms, Train or (uggghh) Hootie & The Blowfish. A compilation album comprised of the best songs songs from those bands wouldn’t hold a torch to August and Everything After. If you hit puberty within a decade of that debut album, you have no excuse not to know every word to every song. I’m not saying it’s a groundbreaking work of staggering genius, it’s just one of those albums that defined a time. So, when Adam Duritz took the stage, with his ridiculous mess of mangy dreads, and sang “Step out the front door like a ghost into the fog…“, I knew I made the right decision by rolling solo. Opening with “Round Here” was somewhat of a false promise as to how much August material would be performed on this particular night, but even though “Omaha” and “Perfect Blue Buildings” were glaring holes in the setlist, I am happy to report that Counting Crows sound as good as they did when I saw them in ’96. “Mr. Jones”, an extended “Rain King”, and even a few tracks from the underrated Recovering the Satellites were all highlights of the night, but even the new stuff didn’t sound like it was coming from a band hanging on to a ledge above obscurity. Sure, their latest is an album of covers, so it does help that you’d know the songs even if you hadn’t listened to it, but I have to say Duritz and crew put on a hell’va show. A show they should be proud of 20 years into their career. I am bummed I missed all the openers, but when they all came back out for a collaborative “Hangingaround”, it put a cap on an excellent evening on the Rocks.

I'm a pretty big fan of the Crows, and I attended the show with five other people, including my wife, who were not as into them as I am, so I couldn't help but think of how they were experiencing the show...

I was quite disappointed in their song selection, leaving out at least 4 or 5 songs that my friends would have been mostly familiar with, and that I was really hoping to hear. As 'Rain King' came to close out the show, I knew that it was the last song, so I gave up on hoping to hear them, but as everyone loves 'Rain King', we all stood up to get into it, and It then felt almost like a f.u. as Adam erratically changed the timing of all the versus, making you look stupid if you tried to sing along to it (I hate it when singers do that).

The most perplexing concert moment that I ever experienced was when they came out for their first encore, and they played 'Palisades Park', which is a 13 minute opus from their latest album. This was their encore?? Nobody knows that song. Even the hardcore fans who may love that song had to be distracted by the droves of people that were filing out of the venue. It resembled a sports arena when the home team is getting blown out in the 4th quarter. The second encore saw them bringing a whole bunch of extra people (un-introduced) onto the stage, and it felt like the whole show was only intended for them and their friends. The energy for the overall show fell flat. I am not interested in seeing them again.

Going to watch a Counting Crows show will transport you back to the early 90s...in a good way. Adam Duritz and his signature hairdo will take you on a mystical, musical journey through time, leaving you smiling and happy and probably sweaty at the end of it. Counting Crows know their audience and make sure to play the songs that you came to hear. Don't worry, you won't leave without listening to the classic hits from August and Everything After (Mr. Jones, Round Here, etc.). I mean, that's why you came to the show, right? They don't want a riot.

Luckily their newer stuff is just as catchy and you will find yourself humming along (or attempting to sing along, like I do) and dancing in a way that people do at concerts that are mostly attended by those who were fortunate enough to get a babysitter for the night. After a few domestic beers everyone starts to dance a little bit. Not to mention that after a few beers every song that is played will sound like the "BEST SONG EVER!!!" And that's what a Counting Crows show has got going for it, familiarity and domestic beers. If you're over 30, you should check out one of their shows. If you're under 30, see if any of your parents' friends need a babysitter so they can go.

I attended the gig @ PNC Center in Holmdel. the crowd was a bit rough and there were teens who were annoying in front of us. we had lawn seats. my friend karina really was spent after that ordeal. she didn't talk the rest of the evening home. Citizen Cope was in great form. CC were a bit underwhelming. it just didn't resonate for me. i don't know what to expect from the audience this time and time again. Anyhow, sorry to disappoint. adam and co played the hits and Holiday in Spain was the encore. i just wish my friend enjoyed herself. the potheads can stay home. i've got nothing against it. i'm just not in college anymore. 40 years on. i'd like to recommend the CC but not at this venue.

The VA beach show was AMAZING!!! The Counting Crows has and will be our favorite band forever. The prolific songwriting coupled with awesome harmonies and tight backing instrumental work is continually jaw dropping. Thank you, Adam, for letting us into your world for a few moments while talking about the inspiration for some of your songs. Here’s to another 25 years!! Can’t wait for the next album and every one to follow!!!!

I love the counting crows and have been listening to them since the 90s. I have never seen them live before and was really excited until they got in to about their 3rd song when I realized how talkie he is while he is singing. At one point he had talked or changed every one of their songs which kinda sucked. I wasn't very impressed with his stage presence and style of singing, I will just have to stick to the radio versions.

Great gig on a dry summer evening in Dublin (a rare alignment of events).

The set list was a good mix of favourites and the latest album material.

It is always interesting to hear how they play older songs which they will have re-interpreted after having played them so much. It keeps the audience on their toes when they try to sing along (something an Irish audience will always do).

I've been a big fan since I was very young, but i'm sad to say this will almost certainly be the last time I see them live. Adam sounds nothing like he used to and there is seemingly little effort put into compensating for the decline in quality with additional effort and or set design. This band is a shell of what they were a decade ago and it's a damn shame to see them go out this way.

The Counting Crows cancelled the show in Paris because one of the band members was 'physically ill'. One day later they played at a sold out venue in Amsterdam and played 23(!!) songs. Was it really the illness or just that the concert in Paris wasn't sold out. This was the second time that they cancelled a concert in Paris. I'm completely done with the Counting Crows!

Counting Crows Announce 56-Date 2023 Summer Tour with Dashboard Confessional

by Jacob Uitti March 14, 2023, 9:03 am

Grammy-nominated band Counting Crows, known for songs like “Mr. Jones” and “Omaha,” has announced a lengthy, 56-date summer 2023 tour that’s set to kick off on June 13 and conclude on September 25.

Videos by American Songwriter

The new string of dates, dubbed the Banshee Season Tour, will be a collaboration with the popular band Dashboard Confessional. English singer-songwriter Frank Turner will also join the tour for select dates.

The string of shows kicks off in Omaha, Nebraska, at the Steakhouse Omaha with stops in Boston, Tampa, Nashville, New Orleans, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and more. The 56-date tour concludes with a show at the famed Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado, on September 25.

Fans can check out a video from Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz and Dashboard Confessional’s Chris Carrabba “packing” for the trip below. The two pals originally met in 2003 at the 17th Annual Bridge School Benefit Concert in San Francisco with Neil Young. Since then, the two have remained buddies, working together both on and off the stage.

“One of the best things about a life in rock and roll is that we spend it traveling the world playing music,” said Duritz of the upcoming gigs. “It’s even better when you can do it with one of your best friends and watch them play every night too. Chris Carrabba hits the trifecta for me in that he’s one of my best friends in the world, one of my favorite people in the world, and he leads one of my favorite bands of all time, Dashboard Confessional. Sorry for the terrible pun but hands down, this is going to be the best summer ever.”

Added Carrabba, “Dashboard Confessional could not be more excited to be playing all across America with our heroes and friends Counting Crows. Dreams really can come true!”

Tickets go onsite to the general public for the tour on Friday, March 17, at 10 a.m. local time. For additional information on Banshee Season Tour 2023, please visit, HERE .

Exploding onto the music scene in 1993 with their multi-platinum breakout album, August and Everything After, the band has gone on to release seven studio albums, selling more than 20 million records worldwide, and is revered as one of the world’s most pre-eminent live touring rock bands.

In October 1996, the band’s double-platinum sophomore studio album, Recovering the Satellites , debuted at number one and further solidified their growing reputation as one of the leading American alternative rock bands in the world.

2018 marked 25 years since the band’s inception and sent Adam Duritz, Jim Bogios, David Bryson, Charlie Gillingham, David Immergluck, Millard Powers, and Dan Vickrey back on the road for the “25 YEARS AND COUNTING” tour. In 2021, Counting Crows ranked #8 on Billboard’s “Greatest of All Time: Adult Alternative Artists” 25 th- anniversary chart.

Quintessential 90’s rock: tallying up the hits from Counting Crows.

For more than two decades, Counting Crows have been producing crowd-pleasers with candid lyrics accompanied by charismatic live performances.

Counting Crows is an American alt-rock band formed in 1991 from Berkeley, California. Interestingly enough, the name of their band was inspired by a British nursery rhyme involving the superstition around counting magpies.

The band has had major success over the years, amassing fans from around the world who admire their soulful lyrics and passionate hits. The group has released an impressive seven records, received Academy Award and Grammy Nominations, and sold more than 20 million records around the globe.

Join me as I count down the best Counting Crows songs out there right now!

21 Best Counting Crows Songs

1. mr. jones.

Of course, my list must start with Mr. Jones because Mr. Jones is what catapulted the band to fame! It was released as a teaser from their debut 1993 album, August and Everything After.

With pointed lyrics like “when everybody loves me, I will never be lonely,” the song is a commentary on the perceived idealism of fame and was inspired, funnily enough, by pre-fame rejection on a night out at the bar.

Written primarily by Adam Duritz and guitarist David Bryson, and produced by T-Bone Burnett, Bruce Ranes, the song remains one of the most recognizable songs of the band. When it was released, it shot to number 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and hit number 1 in Canada and number 7 in France.

2. Round Here

Heralded as a “devastating masterpiece,” by fans, Round Here has a multitude of meanings, depending on who you ask. If you ask the band, they share that it’s about the struggle of uninspiring jobs, life’s frustrations, and pondering about actualizing your dreams.

Fans, however, feel comforted by the band’s raw words and attribute it to overcoming mental health struggles, family problems, and standing up for your individualism.

The song is smooth and mellow, with noticeable guitar riffs and light percussion throughout. The song was released in 1994, as part of the band’s August and Everything After album.

3. Accidentally in love

Fans of the 2004 film Shrek 2 will surely remember this uplifting hit! Accidentally in Love was the first song to be played in the film and tells the story of falling in love with someone a little less conventional.

Counting Crows lead singer Adam Duritz’s sullen voice is overlayed by punchy, lively music with catchy lyrics. Critics, fans, and even children went crazy for the song, loving the happy song that is rather opposite to what the band normally releases.

The song was released just before the movie release in May 2004, making it an easy-listening hit for summer 2004. The song received a nomination for Best Original Song at the 2005 Academy Awards.

4. Big Yellow Taxi (Feat. Vanessa Carlton)

Counting Crows collaborated with musician Vanessa Carlton for their take on the original 1970 Joni Mitchell song and were featured in the hit film Two Weeks’ Notice.

Big Yellow Taxi featured on the band’s fourth album Hard Candy released in 2002 but this version did not include the vocals of Carlton.

It remains a well-loved cover and I still frequently hear it on the radio. It’s a song that has aged incredibly well, with its important examination of society’s urbanization and gentrification.

5. Colorblind

Colorblind is a moody, dark, and haunting song written by Adam Duritz and Charlie Gillingham. The song’s deep lyrics are matched with classical-sounding piano, soft violin, and mellow guitar.

Colorblind is number 7 on the 1999 album, This Desert Life and featured in the 1999 drama film Cruel Intentions.

The song is described by fans as intense and heavy, with interpretations wide and varied but many people love its poetic discussion on the heaviness of depression.

6. A Long December

A Long December is a sulky, piano-heavy tune. It was released, aptly, in December 1996 as part of Counting Crows Recovering the Satellites album.

Written and sung by Adam Duritz, the 4 minutes and 54-second song is about life, the many changes we all go through, the hope for the future, and trying to be positive about what’s to come.

It climbed its way to number 1 on Billboards US Adults Alternative Song and number 1 on Canada’s Top Singles, RPM.

7. Omaha

Omaha is a soulful tune combining Celtic influences and upbeat rock .

The lyrics of Omaha critique the influence of Christianity on American society, and the rigid rules that it puts in place, rather than focusing on spreading love.

The song is track two on the band’s first album, August and Everything After, released in 1993.

8. Rain King

Noticeably upbeat and cheerful, Rain King is a pop-rock tune from the band’s first album, August and Everything After.  Fans applaud the song for its nostalgic magic, as it draws you in to reflect on your life.

Rain King was inspired by a character in a book written by Saul Bellow, but focuses on the creative process, finding your vision and translating that into the final, creative masterpiece.

9. Hanginaround

This rocking upbeat song peaked at number 1 on Billboard US Alternative Adult songs.

Hanginaround has a super catchy beat, singable lyrics, guitar solos and was a big hit with fans . The song is fun, and you can tell the band had fun making it. The band was experimental with this one, looping eight piano pieces, drums, and adding a flair of hip hop to the mix.

It was released in 1999 as part of the band This Desert Life. The music video is quintessential 90s, filmed in the band’s living room and featuring their real-life friends.

10. Anna Begins

Number ten on my list is Anna Begins , from the band’s first album, released in 1993.

The whiny, low-beat song laments heartbreak, promises, and denial. Famously, Anna was a woman that Adam Duritz met in Greece, who he fell fast and hard for. Anna was not keen to carry on the relationship, leaving Adam’s heart in pieces and inspiring the hit song.

Fans adore the relatability of young love, confusion, and daydreams – and the idea that new love is seemingly perfect.

11. Perfect Blue Buildings

Number 11 on my list is Perfect Blue Buildings, a mellow, soft rock song that some have deemed “agonizing” and “haunting,” to listen to due to its rawness.

The song, which was written by Adam Duritz, discusses the challenges of sticking to sobriety. With lyrics asking for “help” over and over, it seems to be a desperate cry for assistance.

The song is featured on the band’s first album, August and Everything After, and it was released in 1993.

12. Raining in Baltimore

Raining in Baltimore is a delicate song that involves heavy piano overlayed with some organ sounds halfway through.

This song is emotional and highlights the intensity of being lonely, isolated, and wishing to be elsewhere. Adam Duritz was born in Baltimore but left at just age 3. The lyrics are noticeably painful and invokes sympathy from the listener.

Like many of the Counting Crow hits, the song’s meaning is defined by the listener. Many fans related to the song as they felt it was about those who choose to live away from their country, perhaps somewhere with less of a support system, and navigating this.

13. Time and Time Again

In Time and Time Again , you can truly feel the sorrow in Adam Duritz’s voice, as he belts about the challenges of being in love, time apart, and questioning yourself.

His angst voice is paired with heavy guitar and percussion that makes for a mellow, tragic, hit that is a part of their first album.

14. Sullivan Street

Sullivan Street is the 8th track on the band’s first album August and Everything After written by Adam Duritz and David Bryson. The song implores soft piano, percussion, and bass, with the focus on the angsty vocals of Duritz.

It is a heavy song that discusses the heartbreak of knowing you must leave someone, or somewhere, that you still care for but ultimately know it’s what is best for you. “Sullivan Street” is about a place with distinct memories that make it hard to revisit – yet it is a permanent fixture.

15. A Murder of One

This intense, percussion-heavy tune is the final song from the band’s first album August and Everything After and was written by Adam Duritz, Matt Malley, and David Bryson.

The catchy song lasts nearly 6 minutes as it discusses, with a sense of urgency, the loss of child naivety and the reality of life’s sorrow and frustrations.

“Murder” in the title is a creative nod to the band’s name and the superstition of counting magpies.

16. Goodnight Elisabeth

Goodnight Elisabeth is a feature song from the group’s 1996 album Recovering the Satellites.

The song has a noticeable country twang, which is different for the band, but is still a nice song. Duritz sings, “ I’ll wait for you in Baton Rouge, and I’ll miss you down in New Orlean s,” shows that despite breaking up with a woman named Elisabeth, he’ll be thinking of her yet due to his fame and touring, their relationship won’t work.

17. American Girls

This alternative, pop-rock hit is upbeat and spunky and features the lovely vocals of Sheryl Crow. The song was released on May 13, 2002, and shot up to the number 1 spot on the Billboard US Adult Alternative Songs chart.

The band rocked the house down with a live performance on the acclaimed The Late Show with Conan O’Brien in 2002, with a positive reaction from their fandom.

18. Mrs. Potters Lullaby

Mrs. Potter’s Lullaby is a fun, upbeat song that encourages you to get up and dance.

It was inspired by a secret movie star that the band’s singer Adam Duritz was crushing on. He must have been pretty inspired since it only took him a rumored 8 hours to write the hit.

One of the band’s longer songs, lasting nearly 8 minutes, was a part of their 1999 album This Desert Life . They later released a popular music video, which follows the band in a sort of daydream party-style video.

19. Elevator Boots

The boys are back! Counting Crows wowed fans with an impressive release in May 2021, Elevator Boots, a part of a 4 song EP “ Butter Miracle, Suite 1.”

The song has a bit of country, remixed with their classic rock beats and the voice of Adam Duritz, who sounds a bit smoother and calm than previously, taking the lead.

The band performed their latest single to the delight of fans on Jimmy Kimmel Live on May 21st, 2021.

20. Ghost Train

The penultimate tune on my list had to be Ghost Train. This angsty percussion-heavy tune is pretty underrated, through a solid contribution to the band’s first album, August and Everything After.

Like the band’s other songs, the poetic lyrics are a stripped-back look at how previous relationships, romantic and not, sit with you, linger with you, and continue to impact your life even after they finish.

21. Angels of The Silences

I conclude my list with Angels of the Silences, one of the pure rock songs from the group. Angels of the Silence was the first song released from the 1996 album, Recovering Satellites.

With all the elements of a perfect rock song, fans loved it, calling it dynamic and catchy. It landed at number 3 on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart making it the most successful song from the album.

Alexandra Smith

Alexandra loves playing the piano and guitar. She has always been a music lover, but it wasn’t until she was in high school that she realized how much she loved to play. It allowed her to express herself without having to be verbally expressive, which is something she found very empowering.

THANKS! Putting it in a post along with the Byrds, Hitchcock's "The Birds," Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven," the crow from the Grateful Dead's "Uncle John's Band," and more...Thanks!

P.S. I'm 75 and your post is my introduction both to the band's music AND to their themes. Good medicine!!!

Totally unrelated...but seeing your Port St. Lucie address...here's a funny parody of a Christmas favorite that takes place in your hometown. Enjoy!!!

Santana and Counting Crows Kick Off Joint Tour Captivating Audiences with Timeless Hits

I t is that time of the year again when the summer concert season has started. This year, it brings along the excitement of a new tour from Santana and Counting Crows.

Santana led by its guitarist Luis Carlos Santana has been one of the most important acts in the musical scene for over 50 years. This can be considered their start as that was when their band received the first wide acclaim. It started with Santana at Woodstock in 1969, jumping on stage at halftime and electrifying the audience. It helped their fans to respond to them or be captivated by the band in one way or the other for years.

On the other hand, Counting Crows formed in 1990 and is an example of an American rock band delivering rich poetry mixed with a hint of alt-rock. Formed around charismatic lead vocalist, Adam Duritz, the band achieved tremendous popularity and recognition at some point. The songs included in the track list of their first album August and Everything After were hits. People can listen to this music and get ideas about identity and much more.

Santana reflects on 'Smooth,' Bob Marley ties and career ahead of Ruoff show

counting crows tour songs

In the days before my call with Carlos Santana , I spent a lot of time convincing myself I'd be totally cool.

And I was! Really! Until Santana, the man whose Woodstock performance I watched dozens of times as a teenager, when ‘60s rock became my entire personality, greeted me with a cheery “Hi, hi.”

But I had a plan. I knew generally what I wanted to talk about ahead of the 76-year-old guitar god's June 23 stop at Ruoff Music Center : his upcoming tour and the 25 th anniversary of his smash album, “Supernatural.” Just work your plan, Holly, and it'll work for you.

So, after over-enthusiastically asking him how he was doing (“Grateful and happy”), I launched right into the important question: In the trajectory of your career, can you tell me about the significance of “Supernatural” and its lead single, “Smooth,” featuring Rob Thomas?

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Palm, meet forehead.

Some context here: "Supernatural" was, in fact, magical for Santana's career. That album earned his band eight Grammys, plus Song of the Year for Thomas and his "Smooth" cowriter. And I'm a Young Millennial, the generation for whom that song eventually became a beloved meme . There's no denying the track slaps, but it belongs to the internet now. In 2013, The Onion satirically reported the song had swept the Grammys for 13 consecutive years. People were actually buying white T-shirts that said "I'd Rather Be Listening to the Grammy-Award Winning 1999 Hit Smooth By Santana Feat. Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty," in Times New Roman.

Hence my deep cringe as soon as the words left my mouth. You could've started with anything, Holly, but you started with "Smooth." Chill.

But, in very Santana fashion, he immediately launched into a metaphor about his career and the sun.

"Once in a while you see a flare up, which is (the 1970 album) ‘Abraxas,’ or Woodstock, or ‘Supernatural,’” he said. “And all of them have to do with just being grateful. Show up and be willing to complement whatever is in front of you.”

Leave it to Carlos Santana to remind me to pause for gratitude.

That’s what he’s trying to do for all of us with the Oneness Tour , a 29-show run that kicked off June 14 with support from ‘90s rockers Counting Crows .

Dave Matthews, Creed and the New Kids: All the acts coming to Ruoff Music Center this summer

"I am aligned with the same principles and values as Bob Marley, you know, one love,” he said. “Whether we like it or not, we really are all one. So, when you come to a Santana concert, you actually feel totality and absoluteness and one note, and people start dancing, crying, laughing. It's kind of like a revival."

Next week marks the band's first return to the Noblesville amphitheater in two years. That show was derailed by a last-minute postponement , when the then-74-year-old artist called off the show minutes after supporting act Earth, Wind & Fire left the stage. The week before, he'd collapsed onstage in Michigan and had been hospitalized for heat exhaustion. He returned to a nearly sold-out crowd at Ruoff weeks later.

At his performances, Santana tries to cultivate an environment where people don’t feel ashamed or embarrassed of their desire for connection and love.

"Santana's music creates that atmosphere, that it's OK — it's actually more than OK, it's medicine — to validate your humanness,” he said.

With “Supernatural” turning 25, fans can expect to hear it featured heavily on the setlist, along with other favorites. This year also marks another milestone: 55 years since that iconic Woodstock performance.

It’s been a long career, but a happy one, he said.

"I always go to ground zero in my heart, which is gratitude, deep appreciation and thankfulness,” he said, “and then all of a sudden it just feels like the universe just opens up with an avalanche of abundance, and I receive more.”

Santana is still trying to remind us all that disconnection and divisiveness breed discontent: “The more you share, the more you receive.”

“I know it sounds very hippie to a lot of people,” Santana said, “but that's who I am."

For more than five decades—from Santana’s earliest days as a groundbreaking Afro-Latin-blues-rock fusion outfit in San Francisco—Carlos has been the visionary force behind artistry that transcends musical genres and generational, cultural, and geographical boundaries. Most recently, CARLOS, the feature documentary directed by Rudy Valdez and produced by Imagine Documentaries and Sony Music Entertainment celebrating the music icon’s life and career, premiered at Tribeca Film Festival and was released worldwide.

Counting Crows have enchanted listeners worldwide for more than two decades with their intensely soulful and intricate take on timeless rock & roll. Exploding onto the music scene in 1993 with their multi-platinum breakout album,  August and Everything After,  the band has gone on to release seven studio albums, selling more than 20 million records worldwide, and is revered as one of the world’s most pre-eminent live touring rock bands.

About Carlos Santana:

For more than five decades – from Santana’s earliest days as a groundbreaking Afro-Latin-blues-rock fusion outfit in San Francisco – Carlos Santana has been the visionary force behind artistry that transcends musical genres and generational, cultural, and geographical boundaries. To date, Santana has won ten GRAMMY Awards and three Latin GRAMMY Awards, with a record-tying nine GRAMMY Awards for a single project for 1999’s  Supernatural  (including Album of the Year and Record of the Year for “Smooth”). He has received the Billboard Century Award (1996), was ushered into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1998), received the Billboard Latin Music Awards’ Lifetime Achievement honor (2009), and was the recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors Award (2013). Among many other distinctions, Carlos Santana has been cited by Rolling Stone as #11 on their list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time;” and has joined the Rolling Stones as one of only two bands to have an album reach the Top 10 in every decade since the 1960s. In 2018, he released his first MasterClass, and celebrated two epic milestones the 50th anniversary of his legendary performance at Woodstock, and the 50th anniversary of his masterpiece  Abraxas . This year he celebrates the 25 th  anniversary of his groundbreaking album  Supernatural.  Santana’s most recent release, “Let The Guitar Play” (Feat. Darryl “DMC” McDaniels) ,  follows on the heels of his powerful, energy-infused  Blessings and Miracles  (2021) that features collaborations with Rob Thomas, Chris Stapleton, Steve Winwood, and many others. The epic feature documentary  CARLOS , produced by Sony Music Entertainment and Imagine Documentaries, is a celebration of Carlos Santana’s life and career. It had its World Premiere at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival and is now available to stream worldwide. Santana has been in residency in Las Vegas for over 15 years and will continue to perform at House of Blues Las Vegas where he recently celebrated his 10th anniversary in the intimate venue.

In October 1996, the band’s double-platinum sophomore studio album,  Recovering the Satellites , debuted at number one and further solidified their growing reputation as one of the leading American alternative rock bands in the world.

Lucinda Williams, Jakob Dylan, Counting Crows, and More to Perform at Jesse Malin Benefit Concert

By Joseph Hudak

Joseph Hudak

Jesse Malin gave his last headlining public performance on March 25, 2023, at Webster Hall in New York. Less than two months later, he suffered a rare spinal stroke that affected the use of his legs. Now, after more than a year of intense and ongoing physical therapy and treatment, Malin will return to the stage with a roster of all-star friends and guests.

Set for Dec. 1 at the Beacon Theatre in New York, the lineup features Lucinda Williams , Counting Crows’ Adam Duritz and David Immerglück, Rickie Lee Jones, Jakob Dylan of the Wallflowers, Butch Walker, Dinosaur Jr.’s J Mascis, and Alejandro Escovedo, along with a full set by Malin. More names will be announced at a later date.

Why Is Everybody Talking About the Hawk Tuah Girl?

Hawk tuah girl has already sold at least $65,000 worth of merch, 'the bear' season 3 is everything you've been waiting for and (maybe too much) more, trump allies urge him not to be a ‘raging asshole’ at debate.

Many of the announced artists on the bill also appear on Silver Patron Saints: The Songs of Jesse Malin , an upcoming tribute album to Malin due Sept. 20. Others covering Malin’s music on the LP include Bruce Springsteen, Bleachers, Susanna Hoffs, the Hold Steady, and Rancid. Last week, Malin released Chasing the Light , a live album and concert DVD filmed in 2022.

All proceeds from the concert will benefit the Jesse Malin Sweet Relief artist fund . Presale tickets for the show go on sale June 26 at 10 a.m. ET via Ticketmaster (password: PATRONSAINTS). A general presale is set for June 28 at 10 a.m. ET.

Daily southtown | santana and counting crows reunite for tour, stopping in tinley park.

Lead vocalist Adam Duritz is a founding member of Counting Crows, which is part of Oneness Tour 2024. The package, which also includes Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Santana, makes a stop on June 29 outdoors at Credit Union 1 Amphitheatre in Tinley Park. (Mark Seliger)

Santana and Counting Crows: Oneness Tour 2024 makes a June 29 stop outdoors at Credit Union 1 Amphitheatre in Tinley Park.

“As a kid I was obsessed with Santana the band. I was a huge fan as a kid,” said Duritz, who grew up in California.

“There were a few venues in Berkeley where they would sell all the seats but the first two or three rows were general admission. I literally snuck out of the house as a mid-teenager and camped out to see Santana as a kid. I thought they were the greatest band.”

Years later Counting Crows opened for Santana, which guitarist Carlos Santana formed in 1966.

“When we went on tour with them, they were just as good,” said Duritz about warming up crowds for concerts in Germany, Switzerland and Austria in 2002 during the European leg of Santana’s All Is One Tour.

“They were so improvisational and amazing. I watched every show. I was obsessed.”

Duritz, who cited “A Long December” from 1996’s “Recovering the Satellites” as his favorite Counting Crows song to perform live, said there was no hesitation when the chance came to tour again with Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band Santana.

“As a fellow musician, I found the musicianship in that band completely intoxicating. It blew my mind so I just assumed other people feel the same way I do,” said Duritz, who has lived in New York for 21 years.

Co-founded in 1991 by Duritz and guitarist David Bryson, Counting Crows debuted with the 1993 album “August and Everything After,” which includes “Mr. Jones,” “Round Here” and “Rain King.”

Seven studio albums later, Counting Crows — which also includes Jim Bogios (drums), Charlie Gillingham (keyboards), David Immerglück (guitar), Millard Powers (bass) and Dan Vickrey(guitar) — is touring in support of “Butter Miracle, Suite One.”

“It’s really cool because it’s a suite of music. It’s four songs that all run together like one long song. It was a very challenging composition for me to write it like one long piece of music,” said Duritz about the 2021 EP, which will be expanded into a full album that Duritz said could be released in early 2025.

Counting Crows’ concert set is a mystery but could include “Accidentally in Love” from 2004’s “Shrek 2” soundtrack, the Joni Mitchell cover “Big Yellow Taxi” from 2002’s “Hard Candy” and/or “Hanginaround” from 1999’s “This Desert Life.”

“We make the set list up every night after dinner,” said Duritz, whose mother, Linda Duritz, a geriatric psychiatrist, graduated from Chicago Medical School in North Chicago.

“We’ve been playing for 30-plus years in the band now. It would be really easy to get bored. I don’t want to play songs I don’t want to play. The audience is there to get your full commitment and passion every night. The best way I know to do that is to play songs you’re dying to play.

“I want to be onstage completely involved every night.”

Syracuse native Post Malone is coming home.

Posty will perform at the Empower Federal Credit Union Amphitheater at Lakeview on Saturday, Sept. 14. The concert will begin at 8 p.m.

Tickets go on sale Monday, July 1 at 10 a.m. through Live Nation . Prices have not been announced, but fans can register for presale access on Malone’s website . Citi cardmembers will also be able to access presale tickets starting Wednesday, June 26, at 10 a.m.

Due to high demand, fans may also want to look for tickets on VividSeats , StubHub , TicketNetwork or SeatGeek for tickets.

Post Malone is a Grammy-nominated singer and rapper known for hits like “ Circles ,” “Better Now,” “Rockstar,” “White Iverson,” “Psycho,” “I Fall Apart,” “Chemical,” “Sunflower” and “I Like You (A Happier Song).” He’s released five albums and collaborated with big names like Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Tiesto, Lil Wayne, Noah Kahan, DJ Khaled, Ozzy Osbourne and Hardy’s Hixtape — plus is venturing into country music on recent songs with Morgan Wallen and Blake Shelton.

Malone was born Austin Richard Post on July 4, 1995, in Syracuse, N.Y. He lived in Central New York until he was 10, when his family moved to Texas because his father was offered a job working for the Dallas Cowboys. He currently lives in Utah, but his family still owns a home in Baldwinsville.

Malone tells fans he “comes from/reps” Dallas — he even has a tattoo of President John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated in Dallas — but his musical roots still began in Syracuse.

His father, Rich Post, told syracuse.com that he was a heavy metal/hair band fan but he also worked as a disc jockey for CNY weddings with Whirlin’ Disc DJs, so he was constantly listening to popular tunes and other genres that couples requested. That meant his son Austin was also hearing a wide range of music, including country, grunge, modern hip-hop and classic rock.

The concert is a late addition to the Empower FCU Amphitheater’s 2024 schedule, and will be Post Malone’s first time performing in Syracuse since a 2015 show at Syracuse University.

Malone is also scheduled to perform Sept. 23 at the Broadview Stage at SPAC (Saratoga Performing Arts Center) in Saratoga Springs as part of his new “F-1 Trillion” tour, dubbed “a collection of country songs” performed with The Fools For You.

“I love y’all so very much and I’m so excited to get out and play new music for you,” he said in a statement.

Malone has been one of the biggest music stars of the past decade, performing at the Super Bowl , the Grammys, “ Saturday Night Live ,” NPR’s “ Tiny Desk Concert ,” and multiple major festivals. He also launched a new outdoor stage in New York City’s Times Square , appeared in movies like “Road House,” helped launch a professional beer pong league and has his own lines of rosé wine (Maison No. 9), clothing (Trading Post Apparel), and Crocs.

All 17 Disney live-action remakes ranked from tolerable to downright unwatchable

  • In 2010, Disney began releasing live-action remakes of some of its classic animated films in earnest.
  • While most were successful at the box office, their artistic value has been questioned.
  • In almost every case, the original animated film is superior to its live-action remake.

Insider Today

Remaking animated films or TV shows in live-action is only becoming more frequent in Hollywood — just look at shows like "Avatar: The Last Airbender," " One Piece ," and "Cowboy Bebop."

But the studio that has done this most successfully — and most frequently — is Disney. There have been 17 live-action remakes or reimaginings of its classic animated films, give or take a few additional sequels.

While not all of them have been well-reviewed — and, arguably, they're mediocre at best — most of these movies made a lot of money at the box office. For example, "Beauty and the Beast," "Alice in Wonderland," "Aladdin," and "The Lion King" all crossed the $1 billion mark , according to Box Office Mojo.

We decided to rank these movies based on their quality, the changes made from source material , casting, and more.

Here are all 17 live-action remakes, ranked from worst to best — in our opinion.

"Alice in Wonderland" has aged poorly, from its star to its aesthetic.

counting crows tour songs

It's been 14 years since "Alice in Wonderland" was released in 2010. Since then, director Tim Burton has only become less beloved by audiences ("Wednesday" on Netflix aside). His whimsical goth vision ages this movie — everything sort of looks like it came straight out of Hot Topic .

Additionally, Johnny Depp's performance as the Mad Hatter, which was grating at the time, now feels harder to watch after his myriad controversies .

This movie did make over $1 billion worldwide (enough to justify an even worse sequel in 2016, "Alice Through the Looking Glass"), but we venture to say if you turned this on now, you'd barely make it to Alice falling down the rabbit hole.

Point-blank, "Pinocchio" is scary to look at.

counting crows tour songs

The less we say about this 2022 movie, the better. Pinocchio, the character, has veered so far into the uncanny valley that it's hard to look at him. Add in a new (and unnecessary) seagull, aggressively voiced by Lorraine Bracco, the sanitation of the original movie's intentionally horrific Pleasure Island sequence, and some bad CGI … and this movie is just a dud .

It went straight to Disney+, so we'll never know how successful it actually was with audiences.

It doesn't help that a superior adaptation of the fairytale this is based on was released the same year: " Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio ." If you want to watch a talking puppet, we'd recommend you stick to that version.

You might not even remember that the 2010 film "The Sorcerer’s Apprentice" exists.

counting crows tour songs

This is a loose adaptation, but we're counting it. It's based on a segment from the 1940 anthology film "Fantasia" and its 1999 sequel, "Fantasia 2000." In the original short, Mickey Mouse plays an impatient apprentice who is sick of doing chores and decides to steal his master's magic hat, to disastrous effect.

The 2010 live-action version stars Nicolas Cage as the wizened sorcerer, while Jay Baruchel takes on the role of the apprentice.

This movie's main issue is that it's forgettable. It suffers from being, above all else, boring. It has very 2010 action and special effects, and as a result, made $215 million against a $150 million budget, the Los Angeles Times reported.

This movie is also part of why director Jon Turteltaub and Cage never made "National Treasure 3" — at least according to Cage's 2022 interview with GQ — and we'll never be over it.

There's no reason for a "Dumbo" remake.

counting crows tour songs

Was anyone desperate for a remake of the 1941 original "Dumbo," which has very questionable racial politics, a harrowing scene in which Dumbo, a baby elephant, gets drunk and hallucinates, and not much else? We think not.

The 2019 remake, once again directed by Tim Burton, pretty much does away with all of that. There are no crows, no Timothy Q. Mouse, or any talking animals at all — Dumbo is silent. Instead, the action is moved to entirely new human characters, who are all forgettable.

That's this movie's biggest sin — it doesn't justify its existence at all. And judging by its poor box-office numbers , audiences weren't sure what to think of it, either.

"Lady and the Tramp" is just fine.

counting crows tour songs

The original "Lady and the Tramp" from 1955 is another example of Disney's problematic past coming back to bite it. "The Siamese Cat Song," sung by cats Si and Am, is so racist that Disney added a disclaimer to the beginning of the film on Disney+.

So, the 2019 remake, which went straight to the streaming service, gets points for fixing that by adding two new cats, Devon and Rex.

Besides that, there's not much else to say about this live-action/CGI hybrid. Unlike "The Lion King" remake, Lady, Tramp, Jock, Trusty, Peg, etc., are played by real dogs and aren't just photorealistic creations. But we'd argue it's just not as fun to see two real dogs doing the famous spaghetti kiss.

"101 Dalmatian’s" saving grace is Glenn Close as Cruella de Vil.

counting crows tour songs

This 1996 remake was the first true live-action adaptation of a Disney movie. We're not exactly sure why this remake of the 1961 animated film was Disney's first attempt, but we like it: It updates the setting to modern-day London, switching Roger from a composer to a video game designer.

Glenn Close 's deliciously unhinged performance as Cruella is what elevates this movie — it's probably why we got a Cruella prequel 25 years later.

This was a box-office success — grossing $320 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo — and spawned a 2000 sequel, "102 Dalmatians." Only Close returned from the main cast.

"Maleficent" stars Angelina Jolie as the evil witch from "Sleeping Beauty."

counting crows tour songs

Instead of making a straight-up remake of 1959's "Sleeping Beauty," Disney took a different approach with 2014's "Maleficent."

Rather than centering on Aurora, aka Sleeping Beauty, this film is the story of Maleficent, who is only seen as an evil sorceress in the original. This movie gives her a backstory and a relationship with Aurora's father, Stefan.

While this sounds good in theory, "Maleficent" is perfectly average. Angelina Jolie gives it her all as Maleficent, but the special effects are dated, and the story isn't memorable.

It took five years for a sequel to come out (" Maleficent: Mistress of Evil "), and by then, the momentum from the financial success of "Maleficent" had apparently slowed.

"Peter Pan & Wendy" proves that we should probably cool it on "Peter Pan" for a while.

Did you even know a live-action remake of "Peter Pan" starring Jude Law as Captain Hook, Yara Shahidi as Tinker Bell, and Jim Gaffigan as Mr. Smee was released on Disney+ in 2023?

It's a pity, because this movie is relatively OK. Law is locked in as Captain Hook , and director David Lowery showcases his talent for sweeping landscapes (as seen in "The Green Knight") in his version of Never Land.

Unfortunately, though, this movie just … isn't that interesting.

"Peter Pan" as a story might be cursed — "Hook" is only good if you have nostalgia goggles on; 2003's "Peter Pan" was a flop ; "Pan" stars a white woman, Rooney Mara , as the Native American character Tiger Lily; and this adaptation is barely remembered.

Give these characters a break, Hollywood.

Making the characters in "The Lion King" photorealistic takes all the joy out of the film.

If this was a silent film, 2019's "The Lion King" would be an unparalleled achievement in special effects . But, unfortunately, it's not.

Instead, we were forced to sit through some of the most iconic musical sequences in Disney history, like "I Just Can't Wait to Be King," "Hakuna Matata," "Can You Feel the Love Tonight," and "Be Prepared," being sung by photorealistic animals who can't emote, in a relatively colorless virtual desert.

Part of the magic of animation is that you can make the animals do anything you want — that's why we love the 1994 original so much.

We'll always be thankful that we got Beyoncé's "The Lion King: The Gift" companion album out of this movie, but that's it.

"Beauty and the Beast" has one major flaw.

"Beauty and the Beast," released in 2017, was the first of Disney's new wave of live-action remakes. As a result, it was graded on a curve at the time and made $1.2 billion, per Box Office Mojo.

But if you go back and watch this movie seven years later, you might notice something: Emma Watson , for all her charm, is simply not a great singer. And Paige O'Hara, who voiced Belle in the 1991 original, has one of the clearest voices in all of Disney's history.

There are a few other issues with this movie — it's so long, adds unneeded backstory, switches the amazing Beast song from the Broadway adaptation ("I Can't Love Her") in favor of the boring "Evermore," the underwhelming " exclusively gay moment " — but our biggest problem is Belle.

"Aladdin" is slightly better, but still nowhere near the original.

"Aladdin," released in 2019, also made $1 billion around the world. In this case, we have no qualms with Mena Massoud or Naomi Scott , who play Aladdin and Jasmine wonderfully.

Who we can't whole-heartedly support is Will Smith, who plays the Genie. Simply put, no one is competing with Robin Williams' iconic performance in the 1992 original. It's a tour-de-force, one of the best voiceover performances ever.

Smith was never going to be able to compete, and the off-putting design of his character and his rap-singing did him no favors.

Also, this movie was, for some reason, directed by Guy Ritchie. Ritchie is known for his action films, and he tried to inject as much action as he could into "Aladdin." But we'd argue this movie doesn't need it! It's a fairy tale about a street urchin falling in love with a princess!

"The Little Mermaid" is good, but not great.

Halle Bailey was a perfect choice for Ariel . She has an amazing voice, plays the physical comedy of voiceless Ariel well, and has solid chemistry with Jonah Hauer-King, who plays Prince Eric. Melissa McCarthy also turns in a solid performance as Ursula.

What prevents this movie from being truly fun to watch is all the underwater stuff. Everything looks so fake and lifeless. The colors aren't bright enough, and we've once again run into the "Lion King"/"Lady and the Tramp" problem: Flounder, Sebastian, and Scuttle can't show any emotions on their faces. That's a shame when compared with the 1989 original where Sebastian, especially, is hilarious in his exasperation and anxiety.

Plus, the new songs are so obviously written by Lin-Manuel Miranda (see " The Scuttlebutt ") that they don't mesh well with Howard Ashman's originals.

"Mulan" removed the musical numbers and is better for it.

"Mulan" is the live-action remake that was released during the pandemic, so we'll never know how it would have fared at the box office.

But we're betting it would have done well. " Mulan " is a true action movie, which fits well with the subject matter, as Mulan secretly takes her father's place in the Chinese army.

The 1998 original film has some of the best Disney songs ("Reflection," "I'll Make a Man Out of You," "Honor to Us All"), but the remake wisely removes them , as the tonal shift from hilarious songs to gritty action would be too jarring. Instead, the songs are subtly worked into the score.

We also like the addition of Xianniang, a witch who identifies with Mulan's feelings that she doesn't belong. Mulan has no female friends at all in the original, and while these two aren't friends, there's a kinship and respect between the two.

"Cruella" is bolstered by the lead performances of Emma Stone and Emma Thompson.

While a prequel establishing why Cruella de Vil hates Dalmatians so much doesn't sound fun, we'd recommend watching "Cruella."

First of all, she actually doesn't hate Dalmatians — she kind of likes them. Does that make sense with the character's future? Not really, but it is fun to watch Stone commit so deeply to the 1970s English punk scene.

Her on-screen nemesis, Baroness von Hellman, as played by Emma Thompson, is a campy delight.

Stone's performance earned her a Golden Globe nomination and a sequel is in the works . We're excited.

"The Jungle Book" benefits from having a human character amidst all the animals.

Jon Favreau directed both 2016's " The Jungle Book " and 2019's "The Lion King," but seemingly learned the wrong lessons from "The Jungle Book."

Mowgli, the lone human character in the film, gives viewers a face to center them as he explores a jungle filled with familiar voices like Bill Murray as Baloo, Ben Kingsley as Bagheera, Lupita Nyong'o as Raksha, Scarlett Johansson as Kaa, Christopher Walken as King Louie and Idris Elba as Shere Khan.

The remake added beautiful effects and exciting action. And — spoiler alert — it also changed the ending so Mowgli could remain in the jungle with his friends.

"Christopher Robin" is a sweet movie that can be enjoyed by anyone.

Maybe we're cheating a little bit since 2018's " Christopher Robin " isn't a specific remake of any " Winnie the Pooh " film but instead, a semi-sequel that brings Pooh and friends out of the Hundred Acre Wood into the real world, but this movie is too good to leave out.

In it, Ewan McGregor plays a grown-up Christopher Robin who has left his friends Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, Piglet, Rabbit, Kanga, Roo, and Owl behind. By chance, he reunites with them and is reminded of the important things in life.

It is always a joy to hang out with Winnie the Pooh, and a disillusioned adult returning to their fun-loving ways is a story Disney does so well, like in "Mary Poppins."

Additionally, the score for this movie rocks. It's so perfectly paired with the film.

The best Disney live-action remake is "Cinderella."

Maybe this is because we just don't think the original " Cinderella " from 1950 is that good. Yes, "Bibbidi-Bobbidi Boo" is a banger, and the animation of Cinderella's dress turning from a ripped-up rag to a shimmering princess-worthy ball gown is beautiful, but that's really it.

The prince is barely a character, the other songs aren't that memorable, and Cinderella herself has little personality besides being sweet.

The 2015 "Cinderella" rectifies all that. Ella, as played by Lily James, is kind, funny, and has a very strong sense of right and wrong, while Prince Kit, played by a very blue-eyed Richard Madden, gets an arc and a loving relationship with his dad.

The famous blue ball gown is also one of the rare pieces of Disney iconography that looks just as beautiful in real life. We must also mention Cate Blanchett as a fully committed Lady Tremaine and Helena Bonham Carter as the dotty Fairy Godmother.

We'd go as far as to say that "Cinderella," at least for now, is the only true Disney remake worth your time.
