Refined and relaxing, our iconic punt rides have been operating on the picturesque Avon River for over 35 years. Join us for a 30-minute guided punt ride with informative commentary from your classically-attired punter at one of our two sites: float through the Botanic Gardens from our Antigua Boat Sheds landing or see the central city’s Avon River Precinct from our Worcester Bridge landing.

Located within easy walking distance of the Christchurch Tram route, this activity pairs perfectly with a Christchurch Tram pass: consider our Tram & Punt combo for discounted entry to both attractions.

Bookings are essential at the Antigua Boat Sheds, so please ensure you book for a tour ahead of time to avoid long waits on arrival. Walk-up bookings are available at Worcester Bridge, so advance bookings are not required at this location.

Christchurch Gondola

Located atop the Port Hills overlooking Lyttelton Harbour, the Christchurch Gondola is easily accessible from both Christchurch City and the port of Lyttelton and offers stunning panoramic views. Our Gondola Shuttle operates between Cathedral Square in the central city and the Christchurch Gondola on cruise ship days: the shuttle departs from Cathedral Square on the half hour from 9:30am until 3:30pm, and from the Christchurch Gondola on the hour from 10am until 4pm. You can also catch the #8 public bus from either Lyttelton or central Christchurch and disembark at the door of the Gondola, or travel via taxi or rideshare service. The cablecar journey takes approximately 10 minutes each way, and attractions at the summit include walking track access, licensed café, discovery ride and retail store.

We recommend allowing around 2 hours for a visit to the Gondola including travel time (5 minutes via taxi or bus from Lyttelton, and 15-30 minutes via taxi or bus from central Christchurch).

ORGANISING YOUR DAY

Visiting from lyttelton harbour.

For a full day in Christchurch from Lyttelton Harbour , we recommend visiting the Christchurch Gondola in the morning on your way into the city and combining visits to the Christchurch Tram, Punting on the Avon and the Botanic Gardens Tour during the afternoon before returning to the wharf.

You can also switch this itinerary to head straight into the central city to visit the Christchurch Tram, Punting on the Avon and the Botanic Gardens Tour before visiting the Christchurch Gondola in the afternoon and then travelling back to Lyttelton wharf.

Please contact our Punting on the Avon reservations team at [email protected] to make a reservation ahead of time as bookings are essential for this attraction (please make sure you arrive at Punting in plenty of time, as guests who miss their booked rides will not be able to be refunded).

Directions to our attractions

Shuttles from the cruise ship will be arriving in Christchurch City on Cashel Street.

Christchurch Tram : from the shuttle drop off point you can walk one block east along Cashel Street to the Bridge of Remembrance to catch the Christchurch Tram (Stop #4 is located on the other side of the archway, and you can purchase tickets or collect prepaid passes from our drivers). 200 metres | 3-minute walk

Punting on the Avon – Antigua Boat Sheds Site (2 Cambridge Terrace): from the drop off point you can walk two blocks west along Cashel Street towards the Botanic Gardens. At the end of the street turn left, and you will see the green and white Antigua Boat Sheds building. This attraction is also accessible from Christchurch Tram Stop #13 (a short walk south along Rolleston Avenue). Bookings are essential for this attraction.  400 metres | 5-minute walk

Punting on the Avon – Worcester Bridge Site (Worcester Boulevard): from the drop off point you can walk east along Cashel Street towards Cambridge Terrace before turning left and walking two blocks north along Cambridge Terrace until you reach the Worcester Bridge. You will see the punting landing on the north side of the bridge. This attraction is also accessible from Christchurch Tram Stop #10 directly above on the Worcester Bridge. W alk-up bookings are accepted at this site, with no advance bookings taken.   400 metres | 5-minute walk

Botanic Gardens Tour: from the shuttle drop off point you can walk two blocks west along Cashel Street towards the Botanic Gardens. At the end of the street turn right and enter the Botanic Gardens via one of the three gates. Cruise ship visitors wanting to travel to the Gondola from Lyttelton can catch the #8 public bus towards the Airport, and guests wanting to visit the Gondola on the way back from Christchurch can catch the #8 public bus towards Lyttelton from the Christchurch Bus Interchange on the corner of Colombo and Lichfield Streets. Guests can also choose to travel via taxi or rideshare service.

Visiting from Akaroa Harbour

For a visit to the city from Akaroa Harbour, please note that you may have limited time in the city due to the 2-hour trip from the wharf into the city. For guests arriving from Akaroa, you will have time to visit either the Christchurch Tram, Punting on the Avon and the Botanic Gardens Tour, or to visit the Christchurch Gondola. Unfortunately we have found in the past that guests arriving from Akaroa have not had enough time to visit all four attractions in the 4 hours they have to spend in the city.

Shuttles from the cruise ship will be arriving in the city on Gloucester Street.

Christchurch Tram : from the drop off point you can walk one block south along Montreal Street to the Christchurch Art Gallery to catch the Christchurch Tram (stop 11 is located on the other side of Worcester Boulevard outside a restaurant named Fiddlesticks, and you can purchase tickets or collect prepaid passes from our drivers). 200 metres | 3-minute walk

Botanic Gardens Tour: from the drop off point you can walk one block south along Montreal Street and one block west along Worcester Boulevard towards the Botanic Gardens. Enter the Botanic Gardens via the main gate next to the Canterbury Museum and look for the purple flag near the fountain showing the Botanic Gardens Tour departure point. 550 metres | 7-minute walk

Christchurch Gondola (10 Bridle Path Road, Heathcote) : after arriving in central Christchurch, visitors wanting to travel to the Gondola can do so by catching the #8 public bus towards Lyttelton from the Christchurch Bus Interchange on the corner of Colombo and Lichfield Streets. The bus stops at the door of the Gondola base station, and the #8 public bus towards the Airport can be caught to travel back into central Christchurch. Guests can also choose to travel via taxi or rideshare service.

We look forward to welcoming you and your whānau or friends to our attractions.

Christchurch Cruise Port

The garden city, now being rebuilt after the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011..

Now that the port at Lyttleton has a new dedicated cruise ship berth most ships will be using this port instead of Akaroa.

Now that the port at Lyttleton has a new dedicated cruise ship berth most ships will be using this port instead of Akaroa. Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand, and the country's third-largest urban area. It lies one third of the way down the South Island's east coast. The city was named by the Canterbury Association, which settled the surrounding province of Canterbury. The name of Christchurch was agreed on at the first meeting of the association on 27 March 1848. It was suggested by John Robert Godley, who had attended Christ Church, Oxford. Christchurch became a city by Royal Charter on 31 July 1856, making it officially the oldest established city in New Zealand. The Avon river flows through the centre of the city was named Avon at the request of the pioneering Deans brothers to commemorate the Scottish Avon, which rises in the Ayrshire hills near what was their grandfathers farm and flows into the Clyde. The usual Maori name for Christchurch is Otautahi (the place of Tautahi) and this was a site of seasonal dwelling of Ngai Tahu chief Te Potiki Tautahi, whose main home was Port Levy on Banks Peninsula. On Saturday 4 September 2010, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Christchurch and the central Canterbury region at 4:35 am. Located near Darfield, west of the city at a depth of 10 kilometres (6.2 miles), it caused widespread damage to the city and minor injuries, but no direct fatalities. Nearly six months later on Tuesday 22 February 2011, a second earthquake measuring magnitude 6.3 struck the city at 12:51 pm. It was located closer to the city, near Lyttelton at a depth of 5 km.[ Although lower on the moment magnitude scale than the previous earthquake, the intensity and violence of the ground shaking was measured to be MM IX, among the strongest ever recorded globally in an urban area. ChristChurch Cathedral lost its spire and widespread damage was caused across Christchurch to buildings and infrastructure already weakened by 4 September 2010 earthquake and its aftershocks. Significant liquefaction affected the eastern suburbs, and the total cost to insurers of rebuilding has been estimated at NZ$20-30 billion. On 13 June 2011 Christchurch was again rocked by two more large aftershocks. A 5.6 at only 9 km (6 miles) deep hit at 1.00 pm in the general location of Sumner, Christchurch. This was followed by another 6.3 at only 6 km (4 miles) deep at 2.20 pm again in the general location of Sumner, Christchurch. This resulted in more liquefaction and building damage. There were further earthquakes on 23 December 2011; the first, of magnitude 5.8 according to the US Geological Survey, 26 km (15 miles) north-east of the city at a depth of 4.7 km, at 13:58, followed by several aftershocks and another earthquake of magnitude 6.0 and similar location 80 minutes later, with more aftershocks expected. Further aftershocks of lower magnitudes have occured since that time. Many of the most severly damaged buildings have now been demolished and a major rebuilding program is underway, the exclusion zone [red zone] is being opened up to public access

Is it still possible to visit Christchurch after the earthquake?

Yes, though there has been lots of damage with landmark buildings demolished. The rebuild has started so its a construction site in many places but most tours will show you whats going on. Access is limited and changes daily and roads can be rough, but it is interesting to see.

How long does it take to get into the city centre from the port

You need to allow about 90 minutes for the drive from Akaroa into the city. The road is picturesque but is steep and twisty in places so travel is slow.

I understand the Trans Alpine train trip is still operating, can i do this?

Due to the time to get from the port at Akaroa, there is not enough time for independent operators to offer this option. The cruise lines sometimes offer the trip but they commander the first ships tenders so their coaches can get away first.

Search

The rebuild is underway, most of the city centre buildings that were damaged have been demolished ready for the new buildings. Its going to be a long haul but the city will emerge again, just different, so come and support us with you visit.

Christchurch (Lyttelton), New Zealand

Description.

Travel down the tree-lined Avon Rive, tour English-style gardens and drive past a Gothic cathedral. No, it's not England - it's Christchurch, New Zealand's most English city. The colonists who settled Christchurch transformed the treeless landscape by planting European trees and setting aside vast tracts as parkland. Today, parks dot the city, giving Christchurch an old-world ambience that belies its sophisticated style. Settled under the auspices of the Church of England in the mid-1800s, Christchurch is a planned city that flourished with New Zealand's agriculture and sheep industry. At the heart of the city lies Christchurch Cathedral, a Gothic cathedral built of local stone. The port of Lyttelton serves as your gateway to Christchurch.

  • Lyttelton Cruise Excursions

Only recently completed in 2020, the Lyttelton Cruise Terminal is the only purpose built cruise terminal in New Zealand's South Island, located a 20 minute drive from Christchurch. On cruise days, Lyttleton Cruise Excursions depart from the Port of Lyttelton, with trips to Christchurch, Banks Peninsula & Akaroa, as well as to Arthurs Pass in the Southern Alps.

Cruise excursions to Christchurch allow you to discover the main attractions in the "Garden City". With a range of different tour options, you can take a ride on the historic Christchurch Tram, visit Christchurch Botanical Gardens, go Punting on the Avon River with a guide classically dressed as an English punter, or take a ride up the Gondola for spectacular views of Christchurch City, the Southern Alps, and Banks Peninsula. Lyttelton Cruise Ship Excursions to Christchurch also have options to include a visit to the local Waipara Wineries, see the International Antarctic Centre, visit Willowbank Wildlife Centre, see a working Sheep Farm, or take an exhillerating ride on a Jet Boat.

Very popular with visitors on a Lyttelton Cruise Excursion is a day trip to Akaroa, on the south-eastern tip of Banks Peninsula, 75 km from Christchurch. With it's French and European heritage you will have plenty of time to browse the boutique shops, or cafes. A nature cruise on the Canterbury Cat to see the rare and endangered Hector's Dolphins, the world's smallest dolphin, New Zealand Fur Seals, and the cute little Blue Penguin. Afterwards you will stop for some tastings at Barry's Bay Cheese Factory, who have been making traditional handcrafted cheese since 1895.

Another options for a Lyttelton Cruise Excursion is a day trip through the Southern Alps via the Alpine Pass to Arthurs Park National Park, past towering mountains, raging rapids, and emerald green lakes. Not to be missed is a jet boat trip down the breathtaking gorges of the Waimakariri River. Depending on your cruise ships arrival and departure, you may be able to include the TranzAlpine Express, one of the world's most scenic rail journeys.

Christchurch Cruise Port Guide

On a Christchurch cruise, you’ll discover the second-largest New Zealand city and urban hub of the vast Canterbury region, celebrated for its alpine landscapes, marine wildlife, and protected dark skies. Visitors stopping here on a New Zealand cruise will find vibrant street art splashed across prominent city sites, a booming arts and hospitality scene embracing new laneways and dining precincts, and diverse city attractions.

World-class architecture and design meet skilfully restored heritage treasures set between vast areas of green parks and gardens alongside the banks of the ambling Avon River. The central city is flat, easy for walking and cycling, or you can take the scenic route on a heritage tramway. Beyond the city, explore the diverse natural playground of the Port Hills and craggy Banks Peninsula with its walks, cycling tracks, and New Zealand’s longest chairlift, where the views stretch from the Pacific Ocean to the snowy peaks of the Southern Alps

Top sights & attractions for cruises to christchurch, gardens and parks.

It’s never hard to find a peaceful garden or a park while you’re in port on your Christchurch cruise—the city boasts 740 parks covering 7,400 acres. The biggest of these is Hagley Park, with its avenues of centenarian trees, daffodil fields, and vast lawns. Nearby, the over 150-year-old Christchurch Botanic Gardens are bursting with color. Enjoy a picnic at the botanic gardens or drop into the Ilex Café located on-site for a coffee or lunch.

The Christchurch Tram

Christchurch’s iconic and beautifully restored heritage trams trundle through the inner city on a hop-on, hop-off journey that transports visitors back in time and into the future through the city’s changing cityscape. A full circuit is about 45 minutes, and it’s a great way to see the main sights and learn about the city’s story. End your ride on New Regent St., which features 40 colorful Spanish Mission buildings built in 1932 that are now occupied by eateries, bars, and boutique shops.

Banks Peninsula

South of Christchurch and about 90 minutes by road, Banks Peninsula is a volcanic outcrop that offers rich wildlife experiences in natural surroundings. Akaroa is a small village on the shores of a large natural harbor that fills an ancient volcanic cone. This coast is home to rare Hector’s dolphins, little blue penguins, and New Zealand fur seals. Take a wildlife cruise or explore Akaroa’s unique French history and local produce, which includes wine, olives, cheese, and salmon.

A central city landmark, the Christchurch Art Gallery is a contemporary architectural statement with an undulating glass and metal facade. It is the largest art institution in the South Island and home to one of New Zealand’s most important public art collections.

The International Antarctic Centre gives visitors a taste of the southern continent with an interactive, fun, and immersive glimpse into life on the ice. For wildlife fans on a Christchurch cruise, plan your visit during one of the little blue penguins’ feeding times.

Zip Down Christchurch Adventure Park

Take a ride on New Zealand’s longest chairlift for a thrilling zipline or downhill mountain bike adventure in Christchurch Adventure Park, a massive outdoor terrain on the hills above the city. Culture and History of Christchurch, New Zealand

Maori had been living in this region for about a thousand years before Europeans arrived, evidenced by ancient Maori rock art sites discovered south of Christchurch that provide insights into this early culture. Christchurch’s modern heritage goes back to early 19th century English settlers who were attracted by the large tracts of land suitable for farming. Meanwhile, the little seaside village of Akaroa still celebrates its early French origins.

Christchurch, New Zealand Cruise Port Facilities and Location

On a cruise to Christchurch, you’ll either dock in the main port of Lyttelton or in Akaroa, located about an hour and a half south of the city. The port of Akaroa is small, so cruise ships will anchor off shore and you will be tendered to shore on smaller boats. Once on land, you’ll be in sight of and only a two-minute walk from the small town center of Akaroa, where you’ll find shuttles available to transport you to Christchurch. If you dock in Lyttelton, you can get to central Christchurch via shuttle, taxi, or bus, all of which take around 20 minutes.

Transportation in Christchurch

It’s easy to get around on your Christchurch cruise. If you’re sticking to the city center, the streets are flat and the downtown area is walkable. The Christchurch Tram travels through the city center and stops at popular sites and attractions. Taxis and Uber operate here, and car and bike rentals are available. Bike tours are increasingly popular with tourists on a Christchurch cruise.

Shopping Near the Christchurch Cruise Port

At the historic Christchurch port town of Lyttelton, you’ll find a quirky artistic atmosphere with cafés, quaint shops, and restaurants to enjoy. Christchurch is only 20 minutes away, and in its city center, also known as the CBD, you’ll find a mix of popular brand stores, vintage shops, and cozy boutiques. For locally-made clothes and items, head to the Tannery, an airy shopping center where you’ll find everything from souvenirs to home items to the latest in fashion and beauty. At The Colombo, squeeze in some shopping and then have a coffee at one of its European-inspired cafes, or watch a movie at the arts cinema. If you’re there on a Sunday, head to the Christchurch Farmers’ Market at Riccarton House, where local artisans sell all kinds of handmade items that make for perfect gifts to bring back home.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

In New Zealand, the official currency is the New Zealand dollar (NZD). Most New Zealand businesses accept credit cards, with Visa and Mastercard the most widely accepted. Carrying a little extra cash can be helpful for small purchases. You’ll find an ATM at any local bank. Tipping isn’t customary in New Zealand, but you can feel free to round up to the nearest New Zealand dollar (NZD) or add up to 10% for great service. Service charges are not usually added to the bills you’ll get when docked on your Christchurch, New Zealand cruise.

To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Port Lyttelton is the cruise port serving Christchurch - the largest city on New Zealand's South Island. The seaport is located to the southeast of the city. Christchurch has population around 375,000, ranking it NZ's 3rd largest urban area - after Auckland and Wellington .

Lyttelton (cruise port to Christchurch) is a port town located on the eastern coast of South Island (New Zealand). The cruise port Lyttelton Harbour is at Banks Peninsula's northwestern end. The distance from Lyttelton to Christchurch is approx 12 km (7,5 mi) - to the northwest. The town covers a total area of approx 15 km2 (5,6 mi2) and has population around 3,000 (including the neighbouring Cass Bay, Corsair Bay, and Rapaki.

Lyttelton Harbour and Akaroa Harbour are the two major inlets of Banks Peninsula (Canterbury, NZ). The harbor has length approx 15 km (9,3 mi) from its mouth to Teddington. Like Akaroa Harbour, Lyttelton is the caldera of an extinct volcano,

Lyttelton is linked with Christchurch by 1-track rail tunnel (1867-opened), also by 2-lane road tunnel (1964-opened) and 2 roads. Near Lyttelton Harbour's head is located Quail Island (nature reserve), and to the south is Ripapa Island.

Christchurch

Christchurch NZ is the seat of Canterbury Region. The urban area is on the eastern coast of South Island NZ, and north of Banks Peninsula. The city was named on March 27, 1848. On July 31, 1856, it received the city status (declared by Royal Charter), officially making it the oldest established city in NZ.

Avon River flows through downtown. An urban park is situated along the river banks. the city is distinctively English, with various European elements and featuring Gothic Revival architecture. As New Zealand's early settlers, Maori culture is also widespread. The town has a lot of public spaces, cafes, bars and restaurants in the centre and also in the surrounding suburbs.

The large number of parks and residential gardens has given Christchurch the name "The Garden City". Hagley Park and Christchurch Botanic Gardens are in the central part. Hagley Park serves as a site for sporting events, including golf, netball, rugby, cricket, as well as for open-air live concerts performed by local orchestras and bands.

To the north is Willowbank (wildlife park). An ecological restoration program to create a wetland (Travis Wetland) is to the east of downtown (in the Burwood suburb).

Port Lyttelton

Lyttelton is the main seaport of Canterbury (Christchurch) area since 1877. During the 1970s, Lyttelton was one of South Island's main ports upgraded for containerization. Its container terminal was inaugurated in 1977. Most of South Island's coal cargo is shipped from Lyttelton. The port also has a petroleum storage terminal and large container / bulk cargo terminal.

Port Lyttelton has been historically regarded as "Gateway to Canterbury" by its colonial settlers. The port is a regular travel destination for NZ cruise ships. It is South Island's principal cargo port (goods transport terminal) handling around 61% of all imports and 34% of all exports by value.

In 2009, NZHPT (New Zealand Historic Places Trust) gave Lyttelton the status "Category I Historic Area". Lyttelton is the biggest settlement on Lyttelton Harbour. The harbor waterway is an inlet on Banks Peninsula's northwestern side. The town is on Port Hills' lower slopes that separate it from Christchurch City. A road tunnel through Port Hills links Lyttelton with Christchurch (to the northwest). Sumner Town is approx 6 km (3,7 mi) to the northeast and is accessed through Evans Pass. Governors Bay is approx 10 km (6,2 mi) to the west.

Much of Lyttelton's architectural heritage was lost in the 2010-2011 earthquakes. Damages were considered too extensive for reconstruction. Town's oldest churches have also collapsed, among which was the Holy Trinity Avonside.

Following the earthquakes, for several years cruise ships instead of in Lyttelton docked in Akaroa. Regularly scheduled ferries link Lyttelton with Diamond Harbour (on the harbour's southern coast). The uninhabited Quail Island is southwest of Lyttelton.

In June 2018 started construction works on Port Lyttelton's new cruise berth (completed in November 2020). The USD 67 million facility is located between Inner Harbour's entrance and Cashin Quay. It became NZ's first custom-built cruise berth with capacity to handle world's largest passenger ships . The new berth is designed to withstand earthquakes and waves generated from storms and northwest winds typical for the region. The Terminal's existing berth is still used by smaller-sized vessels. On November 16, at the new berth docked MS Professor Khromov (fka Spirit of Enderby) . The operated under charter Russian ice-strengthened ship departed from Vladivostok Russia carrying only crew (22 Russians) who remained in isolation onboard for 43 days total. Professor Khromov then continued to Invercargill (NZ's southernmost and westernmost city) to pick up its first cruisers for the voyage to Stewart Island/Oban and Fiordland NP .

For season 2019, the cruise port had scheduled 19 ship calls.

Lyttelton-Christchurch cruise terminal

Cruise ships to Christchurch NZ dock in Lyttelton Harbour (at port's Inner harbor). The pier is located at short walking distance from downtown. Lyttelton Port Authority provides complimentary shuttle bus service between the cruise terminal and the tourist info center in downtown Lyttelton. The port has 2 dedicated cruise berths and capacity to dock two liners simultaneously.

Most cruise companies offer complimentary shuttle buses to Christchurch City's center. From Lyttelton, cruise passengers can also take public Bus Route 28 (Papanui-Lyttelton-Rapaki) to Christchurch. Bus travel time is approx 30 min.

New Lyttelton cruise ship pier

On May 1, 2017, Lyttelton Port Company announced its plans to construct a new cruise ship pier (berthing / docking facility) in Lyttelton. The completed in 2020 facility is Christchurch's first purposely-built cruise ship dock with capacity to accommodate the world's biggest cruise liners . The new cruise berth is designed to accommodate vessels even of the RCI's Oasis-class - LOA length 362 m, weight 225,282 GT tons, capacity over 5400 passengers plus 2400 crew.

Previously, as Port Lyttelton was unable to handle large cruise vessels, they docked in Akaroa instead. Construction works were initially scheduled for completion by 2019 but the project was extended through November 2020.

NZ's cruise industry has worth of around AUD 490 million to the country's economy (season 2016–2017 statistics).

Australian cruise brand p&o cruises is closing.

Australian cruise brand P&O Cruises is closing, and a ship that regularly sails in and out of Auckland will be removed from the fleet.

P&O's parent company Carnival Corporation will fold the operations into its flagship Carnival Cruise Line brand early next year, it said.

The Pacific Explorer will be retired after next February, while the Pacific Encounter and Pacific Adventure ships will be rebranded.

Anyone booked on the Pacific Explorer from March next year will be refunded, P&O Cruises said.

"All itineraries on Pacific Explorer scheduled to sail after 2nd March 2025 are being cancelled," it said.

"If you are booked on one of these itineraries you will be contacted by Guest Services in the coming days with refund details."

The South Pacific's small population, and significantly higher operating and regulatory costs led to the decision to close the brand, Carnival Corporation's chief executive Josh Weinstein said.

Carnival Corporation would remain committed to Australia where it was the largest cruise operator in the region with 19 ships calling on 78 destinations, he said.

The company has 60 percent of the market share.

"P&O Cruises Australia is a storied brand with an amazing team, and we are extremely proud of everything we have accomplished together in Australia and the broader region," Weinstein said.

P&O Cruises Australia shutting down as Carnival Cruise Line grows

Travellers planning to book a cruise on the P&O Pacific Explorer around New Zealand may want to hold tight after an announcement by the brand.

P&O Cruises revealed the Australia brand will be sunset in February. All sailings on the Pacific Explorer will be cancelled from March 2, while Pacific Adventure and Pacific Encounter will be integrated into the sister line, Carnival Cruise Line.

The announcement was made via P&O’s website, which stated the company was “immensely proud of P&O Cruises Australia’s 90-year heritage”.

Carnival Corporation & plc, the cruise ship line’s parent company, announced the news on Tuesday and confirmed P&O would be integrated into Carnival Cruise Line. From March, it would no longer exist, but Pacific Encounter and Pacific Adventure would continue to sail under the Carnival Cruise Line brand.

It’s not unusual to see smaller cruise lines being restructured into larger lines.

“There’s been a lot of restructuring — a lot of bigger cruise lines, you take over smaller ones,” she says.

This does not mean P&O Cruises Australia is insolvent or business is tanking — rather, the parent company saw more efficiencies by restructuring the brand into its larger line.

A statement from Carnival Corporation CEO Josh Weinstein suggested the strategic move had been made to divert resources to where the most demand was.

“Despite increasing Carnival Cruise Line’s capacity by almost 25 per cent since 2019, including transferring three ships from Costa Cruises, guest demand remains incredibly strong,” he said.

“So, we’re leveraging our scale in an even more meaningful way by absorbing an entire brand into the world’s most popular cruise line.”

After the integration next year, Carnival Cruise Line will make up about 35 per cent of the company’s total global capacity. Between 2019 and 2028, Carnival Cruise Line is expected to grow 50 per cent.

Carnival, based in Miami, appears to see the South Pacific as too expensive to operate in.

“Given the strategic reality of the South Pacific’s small population and significantly higher operating and regulatory costs, we’re adjusting our approach to give us the efficiencies we need to continue delivering an incredible cruise experience year round to our guests in the region,” Weinstein said.

What happens to P&O Cruise passengers who booked trips?

Travellers booked on a Pacific Explorer cruise that departs after March 2 will have their trips cancelled and refunded.

P&O apologised for the “necessary” change and said all guests affected by the cancellations, including travel agents, had been emailed.

If passengers paid a deposit, they can receive a full refund or Future Cruise Credit with bonus Onboard Spending Money. Those who booked with travel agents will get their refund through their agent.

P&O said refunds could take up to 20 business days after the online form closes on June 30.

Cruises departing before March 2 will go ahead as planned. On October 30, the final Pacific Explorer sailing from Auckland is scheduled to depart, and arrive in Melbourne five nights later.

“If you are booked to cruise before this date, your itinerary is unaffected and we look forward to welcoming you on board soon,” the company wrote.

The Pacific Explorer returned to Auckland on August 12, 2022, after international borders reopened, to a fanfare welcome. Since then it’s operated many newsworthy cruises, including one that rescued a stranded man who had capsized near Noumea, and intercepted a small yacht in distress , providing medical care to one of the guests.
