half moon cay things to do

Half Moon Cay (Little San Salvador Island) is a crescent-shaped, cruise line private island owned by Carnival Cruise Line and used seasonally by Holland America Line .

Carnival cruise ships make over 200 stops a year at this picturesque private resort, and it’s one of the most popular stops for cruises in the Bahamas.

A cruise to Half Moon Cay is the highlight of the voyage for many and offers the perfect beach day to cruise passengers.    With a variety of cruise shore excursions to choose from this is a private island with something for everyone.

This port of call has won the title of “ Best Private Island ” 20 years in a row by the Porthole cruise magazine Readers’ Choice Awards.  And for good reason. A visit to Half Moon Cay is a visit to paradise. So let’s dive in!

What is There to Do in Half Moon Cay?

In this post we will guide you through the best things to do on the island and give you more than enough reasons to get off the ship.

Swimming, snorkeling, diving, deep-sea fishing, parasailing, sunbathing, and horseback riding are just a few of the excursions you can enjoy on Half Moon Cay.  Our full list is below.

There is a straw market on Half Moon Cay where residents from nearby islands will come and sell some souvenirs and local goods.  While this can be a convenient place to pick up some gifts for people back home, keep in mind that it’s not a very big market, and it has limited variety.

But if you want to do some shopping, this is the place on the island to do it.

Where’s the dock?  Well, there isn’t one right now.  You will have to take tenders back and forth from your ship, but it’s a short 15 or 20-minute boat ride on some of the most pristine water you will ever see.  Just look at it as a free excursion.

Once on the island you will see an entrance saying “Welcome to the Pirates Cove”, and the pirate theme is very evident on this 2,400 acre island.

Some Information About Half Moon Cay

First, let’s learn a little about this private island before we get into all the wonderful things you can do here.

Located almost 100 miles southeast of Nassau, Bahamas, Half Moon Cay is one of 700 islands that make of the archipelago of the Bahamas.

The island is over 6 square miles in size, but only about 2% has been developed in order to maintain as much wildlife and natural fauna as possible.  Many cruisers don’t realize that there is more to Little San Salvador than just the heavenly beaches.

Is Food Included at Half Moon Cay?

Yes.  Whether you are sailing with Carnival or Holland America there is a free buffet at the dining pavilion that offers a variety of food, including Caribbean barbecue, hot dogs, hamburgers, and more.  We’ll talk about this more below.

Ultimate List of Things to Do in Half Moon Cay

Check out some of the excursions and free activities I recommend when cruising to this exotic patch of land.

  1.  Visit Half Moon Beach

Some have called this beach the closest thing to an untouched Bahamas that you can find.  Not only is it clean, beautiful, and accommodating, but there are convenient places nearby to get a refreshment or use the facilities.

The sand is fine and soft, and Half Moon Beach is the first thing you will see as your tender approaches the island.  There are usually plenty of loungers to choose from, but the further down the beach you walk the less crowded it will be.

This can be a great excursion-free visit, and you don’t have to worry about any pushy vendors trying to sell you souvenirs while you relax.   There are, however, plenty of Carnival or Holland America staff nearby to help with any issues you may have.  If you need some beach time on your cruise, this is definitely the place to enjoy it.

If you get off the ship early you will find plenty of loungers available, but the area of the beach closest to the tenders will fill up fast as the day rolls on.

You can rent a clam shell so you have some shade at the beach, but you will want to book that in advance to make sure they aren’t all taken.  There are a few trees that offer shade further down the beach, but they also require that you are further away from the water.

Half Moon Beach is about 2 miles long but there are about 10 miles of beach around the island.

2.  Enjoy Captain Morgan’s Pirate Ship

The iconic Captain Morgan pirate ship can easily be seen from your ship before you ever get to the Carnival private island.  Go ahead and check it out.  There are 3 levels to the ship.  The bottom 2 levels are part of the bar and the top deck allows for great photo-ops of the ship and the pristine blue water.

No trip to Half Moon Cay is complete without boarding the Captain Morgan and bellowing out a few of your best pirate-impersonating expressions.

Note :  There are 3 other bars on the island as well, including the main bar near the Welcome Center and the “I Wish I Could Stay Here Forever” bar which also makes for a great photo-op.

3.  Go All-in on a Private Beach Villa

Some of the coolest cabanas in the Bahamas can be found on this private island.   But if you want the ultimate in beach-front luxury you can upgrade to the Beach Villa.

These are 2-story cabins, brightly colored and perfectly fitted for a reprieve for your day at the beach.   These villas have a 5-person hot tub, A/C, a refrigerator, a dining area, a misting shower, and a private balcony on both levels.

Fresh fruit, veggies, chips, and snacks will be provided for you as well as soft drinks and bottled water.

Even floating mats and snorkel gear are provided for you while you have this villa to your group all day.

All of this and it’s only steps from the water.

The cost is $599 and is good for up to 8 people with a surcharge for any extra guests.  It might seem like a lot of money, but it averages out to about $75 per person and offers a much more relaxed and convenient time at Half Moon Beach.

You can also get a standard cabana for rental starting at $359 that has space for up to 4 people.

4.  Splurge on the Private Oasis

A lot of people don’t even know about this option.  The Private Oasis is a 1,620 square foot private cabana that has a walkway that leads right into the pristine turquoise water.   The hot tub, hammock, loungers, and full wet bar along with barbecue area all offer a perfect exclusive environment for up to 12 people.   The cost is about $1,600 but most groups that have booked it have said that it’s worth the price tag.

Carnival’s website explains what comes with the Private Oasis:

“Your package includes the services of a butler, personal chef, bartender, cabana Steward, and lifeguard along with the following:

Whole fresh fruits, chips & salsa. Beverage Package with select Imported and Domestic Beers; Wines by the Glass; Tropical Cocktails including Bahama Mamas, Rum Punch, and Margarita, Frozen Classics including Pina Coladas, Banana Coladas and Strawberry Daiquiris; as well as Virgin Pina Coladas, Virgin Strawberry Daiquiris and Virgin Banana Coladas.”

5.  Take a Nature Walk

As we mentioned, over 95% of Half Moon Cay has not been developed so there are some great nature trails to enjoy the wildlife.

You can do this on your own or take a $19 excursion with a tour guide that will walk you through 1.5 miles of the trail .  The guide will point out the tropical palm and sea grape trees, curly-tailed lizards, and Bananaquit birds of Half Moon Cay.

Hiking around the island is a great low-key exercise for just getting some cardio in while enjoying the sights.   The dune paths are clearly marked, and you will find some informative signs next to the plant life along the way.

6.  Do the Island Bike Tour

You can kick things up a notch with a bike tour of this crescent-shaped island as well.   This will allow you to see a little more of the island than the previous tour.

The bike tour will take you by the welcome center, the Bahamian church , Half Moon Beach, the stable of the swimming horses, and a 700-acre lagoon .  You will even learn how the they desalinate the ocean water and generate electricity on the island.

There is also a bike and hike tour if you’re interested in both.

7.  Get Up Close with the Stingrays

Some people don’t realize that Half Moon Cay has a great Stingray encounter as well called Stingray Cove.   It’s just a short tram ride away or you can walk if you’d like.

After a briefing you can put on some snorkel gear and see the stingrays in their habitat and even feel how silky-smooth they are.  A net keeps other marine life from getting into the enclosure.

8.  Go Swimming with Horses

Even if you have never ridden a horse before you can try this activity on Half Moon Cay.   The horseback experience will tour some of the island and take you to the highest point.  From there you can see 360 degree views of the island as well as some of the other Bahamian islands.

After that the guides will let you get something to drink while they prepare the horses with a special “saddle” for their swim.  It is a specifically designed pad and rope halter.   This is definitely a bucket-list item.

There are about 20 horses that are kept at Pegasus Ranch.  Even if you don’t book a horseback riding excursion you can follow the path to see the horses and see some beautiful flowers along the way.

9.  Kayak the Lagoon

For nature-lovers the kayaking on Half Moon Cay is epic.  There is not a ton of exercise involved though, as you will only kayak half a mile or so at most.

Bone Fish Lagoon takes up a massive 1,400 acres of habitat that is protected.  You can see some exotic seabirds and appreciate the water’s clarity as your guide will point out all the other wild life around you.

There is a stop along the way to see starfish, jellyfish, sea cucumber, and conch.  The guides are fun and make it fun for the whole family so it’s a good family activity to try on the island.

Note : You can also take a glass-bottom boat rides at Bone Fish Lagoon if you want a more leisurely activity.

10.  Snorkel by Boat

The water around Half Moon Cay is stunningly clear, so snorkeling allows for amazing visibility in seeing the coral and marine life.

You can go snorkeling with your own snorkel gear and check out the main beach area, but there isn’t really much to see there, except for crystal clear turquoise water that is.

A boat ride can take you to a site off the coast of the private island so you can see an abundance of marine life in the Caribbean waters.  You might even see a stingray in the wild

11.  Play Some Games

Are you so excited to be on a cruise vacation that you just have to get some energy out?  Why not play some beach games on Half Moon Cay?  You can enjoy activities like basketball, beach volleyball, horseshoes, and shuffleboard .  Just check out the necessary gear from the Sports Center located near the Bahamian Church.

12.  Let the Kids Hit the Playground and Aqua Park

Maybe it’s the children that need to vent some energy.  Half Moon Lagoon Aqua Park is located right on the main beach and has a couple water slides and a pirate ship that shoots water from its canons.  There is also a fountain of water providing a cool mist as it sprays into the air.  The aqua park is free to use.

Half Moon Cay also has a playground without the water, and once again there are pirate ships involved which act as play areas.   There are several slides, swings, teeter totters, and a more restful picnic area for the adults to enjoy a reprieve.

13.  Take the Aqua Trax/Jet Ski Adventure

Jet skis are called Aqua Trax on the island and cruisers can rent them to explore the amazing saltwater lagoon.  Some parts of the lagoon are off-limits, and you must have a driver’s license to enjoy this water adventure.

Personally, I enjoy jet skiing out in the ocean because you can hit the waves and catch some air.   In Bone Fish Lagoon the water is very calm so it’s a smooth ride.

14.  Eat at the Lobster Shack

Yes, you can eat free burgers and BBQ at the Island Barbecue for lunch.  But the dining pavilion is typically only open from 11:30am to 1:30pm.   So, if you’re a little hungry outside of those times or you just have a hankerin’ for some delicious crustaceans, the Lobster Shack is the place to be.

One thing to note is that these lobsters are not New England lobsters, but they are local and fresh.  That freshness is obvious after the first bite.   The cost is $20.

Note : Some of the other food items offered at the free buffet also include hotdogs, ribs, Caribbean jerk, chili fried rice, banana rum cake, titi shrimp and more.

15.  Rent a Hobie Cat (a small catamaran)

There have been mixed reports as to whether or not these are still available at Half Moon Cay, so let us know what you find when you get to the island.

Sailing around in a Hobie Cat on a beautiful sunny day can be the highlight of your day. These small catamarans can be rented from the water sports shack near one of the bars.

The cost is about $50 an hour last time we checked.

16.  Go Birding on Half Moon Cay

Because only a small percentage of the private island has been developed there is still plenty of wildlife to enjoy in its natural habitat.

As part of the sale agreement of Half Moon Cay Holland America Line agreed to maintain the island as a nature preserve and a wild bird sanctuary.  Besides finding nesting seabirds in the wild, birders can also discover almost 50 different species of birds.

Some of the types of birds to be found on the island include burrowing owls, white-crowned pigeons, Roseate, Sooty, Bridled, Brown Noddies, shearwaters, Bahamian pintails, ospreys, Bahamian, Great blue heron, snowy egrets, merlin, pintail, morning, ringed neck and tobacco doves.

Visitors on Half Moon Cay are encouraged to document reports of bird sightings to social media and websites like ebird.com to help maintain efforts to protect this habitat.

What About the CHEERS Drink Package While on Half Moon Cay?

While there are many places to get a beverage to drink on the island, you will not be able to utilize Carnival’s drink package.  You will have to go back to the ship for that.

So yes, even with the drink package you will have to pay out of pocket for every beverage.

What About massages on Half Moon Cay?

I’ve heard some people ask about getting a massage on the island so I wanted to address this as well.  This is a private island, so it is operated by the cruise line and any massage appointments will typically go through the cruise line.

In most cases you can book your massage through the spa front desk and see if there are any openings.  The massage hut is right by the water.  Just make sure you check with your cruise line to see if this service is still offered.

5 Tips to Make Your Half Moon Cay Cruise Even Better

  • Take the free tram to get around the island easier.
  • Don’t skip the beach . This place is known for its incredible sandy beaches so whether you rent a cabana or go for a swim, soak in Half Moon Beach.  Walk further down the beach to avoid any crowded areas.
  • Do everything early . This means get on the first tender, be the first to the lunch pavilion, and if you’re going to rent a clam shell, cabana or villa do this well in advance of your cruise.
  • Keep lathering on the sunscreen . You can go from being in paradise to being in pain in a hurry if you don’t protect yourself from the Bahamian sunshine.
  • Take advantage of all the great photo ops . The popular selfie with the ship in the turquoise water just in the distance is always a good one to get people jealous back home.
  • Rent a clamshell and just enjoy the sounds of the waves without burning to a crisp.

Here’s what you need to know before visiting Carnival’s private island, including the top things to do and places to eat.

Getting to Half Moon Cay

Things to do on half moon cay, tips for visiting.

The Bahamas is teeming with idyllic private islands, some of which are only accessible via cruise ship. Among them is Half Moon Cay. Formerly known as Little San Salvador, the isle was purchased by Holland America Line (owned by Carnival Corporation, the parent company of Holland America and other cruise lines including Carnival, Princess, Seabourn, Cunard, and more) in 1996. The island was officially opened as a port of call in 1997 and has been welcoming cruisers ever since. Its new name comes from the name of the ship in Holland America’s former logo ( Halve Maen , which was captained by none other than Henry Hudson). Coincidentally, the island boasts a beautiful half-moon-shaped beach, making the name extra apropos. Here’s what you need to know about visiting Half Moon Cay, according to travel experts.

Both Holland America Line and Carnival Cruise Line make stops at this private island paradise. “Due to the shallow waters,” notes Tiffany Formby, travel advisor at Travels by Danielle , “this is a tender port.” This means that passengers have to take a smaller boat from the cruise ship to get to land. With this in mind, she recommends “getting in line early to get tender tickets or booking an excursion/cabana to be one of the first off the ship.”

Carnival and Holland America offer a variety of itineraries from several North American ports that include stops at Half Moon Cay.

“There is no shortage of things to do on Half Moon Cay!” says Kari Dillon, travel advisor and owner of Marvelous Mouse Travels . With miles of sandy beaches, clear blue waters, and all-around stunning scenery, this private island offers something for everyone. Best of all, Formby says, “Half Moon Cay can be an expense-free port stop,” thanks to complimentary amenities like lounge chairs plus a splash pad and playground for children. Whether you prefer to hang loose on the beach or embark on an action-packed excursion, here are some of the best things to do on Half Moon Cay.

Beach Activities

Half Moon Cay is perfect for beach lovers, says Dillon. Per the travel advisor, those seeking extra seclusion along the sand should walk further down the beach area. Oftentimes, “the further you walk away from the tender area, the more secluded the beach becomes,” Formby explains.

Additionally, while the aforementioned loungers are great, you can spend the day swaying away in one of the hammocks  (available on a first-come, first-served basis) or rent clamshell sunshades or umbrellas for extra shade. Cruisers can also rent snorkeling gear, floats (from basic single-person tubes to large multi-person inflatables called “Banas”), and a selection of water sports gear including jet skis, kayaks, water bikes, and stand-up paddleboards.

Excursions and Tours

Both Holland America and Carnival offer a handful of tours and excursions on Half Moon Cay. Fan favorites include horseback riding on the beach, kayaking adventures, snorkeling excursions, glass-bottom boat tours, and stingray encounters. On land, cruise passengers can embark on a bike tour or nature walk (both guided and self-guided options are available). Alternatively, sign up for a guided tram tour of the island to stop at its most popular spots while basking in the beautiful views. Exact offerings vary depending on your itinerary, so be sure to check which will be offered during your sailing as you plan your trip.

Cabana Rentals

For a true treat, splurge on a cabana or villa rental. The former is ideal for smaller groups since the starting price (around $500) includes up to four guests (two additional guests can also utilize the cabana, but expect to pay a per-person surcharge). Amenities include snacks (chips, dip, and fruit), drinks (water and soda), and use of water floating mats and snorkel gear. Cabana facilities include a refrigerator, outdoor dining table and chairs, two deck loungers, and a misting shower. Those interested in renting a cabana should do so as early as possible, says Formby. “Cabana rentals sold out quickly for our sailing since the main draw to the island is relaxing beach-side.”

Meanwhile, the 1,620-square-foot Private Oasis cabana, which, per Dillon, “is the largest and most luxurious on the island,”  is truly in a league of its own. In addition to the aforementioned amenities, this cabana includes a BBQ lunch plus a selection of alcoholic beverages (beers, wine by the glass, and tropical cocktails); other highlights include an eight-person hot tub, indoor and outdoor showers, and your very own team (a chef, bartender, butler, steward, and lifeguard) who are on hand to make your day as memorable and fun as possible. The Private Oasis starts at $1,850 for 12 people, though it can hold a maximum of 24 (you’ll pay an additional per-person charge for groups larger than 12).

Two-story beach villas are also available for rent and include all of the above, plus a five-person hot tub. The starting price of $800 covers eight guests; for groups larger than eight, you’ll incur an extra per-person charge (though there is a maximum of 18 allowed per villa).

When it comes to drinking and dining on Half Moon Cay, there are several options. Budget-conscious travelers can take advantage of the open-air BBQ lunch buffet, which, per Dillon, “is delicious, so you do not need to go back to the ship.” The buffet includes barbecue favorites like burgers, hotdogs, chicken, fruits, salads, and desserts.

Alternatively, for a worth-it splurge, eat at the Lobster Shack, which is priced a la carte. The menu here is simple and straightforward, with the star of the show being — you guessed it — grilled lobster. Next to the Lobster Shack is the Wish I Could Stay Here Forever bar, marked by its Instagram-worthy sign. The island boasts three additional bars, including The Bell Bar and Rum Runners. The most famous bar is the pirate ship-shaped Captain Morgan On the Rocks bar, which, per Formby, is “one of the landmarks on Half Moon Cay.” Dillon echoes these sentiments, describing the fan-favorite bar as “a great place to spend the day sipping on cocktails and enjoying snacks.” According to Dillon, the four bars offer similar menus, and your onboard drink package does not include drinks on the island. There’s also beachside drinks service so you can enjoy a beer or cocktail without stepping foot off the sand.

While a visit to Half Moon Cay is one for the books, there are a few things to note to make the most of your time. There is no Wi-Fi on the island, so Formby recommends bringing another form of communication (like walkie-talkies) to use if you separate from your group.

Dillon also shares a few tips and tricks to consider. First, do not forget to bring towels from the ship ashore with you. Second, remember that the earlier you get off the ship, the better chance you’ll have at scoring a seat in a prime beach location. Otherwise, walk a little further down the beach to find more secluded areas. When hunger calls, she recommends eating on the earlier side so you are not caught in a line during the lunch rush — that way, you have more time to explore the island, relax on the beach, or wade in the water.

Also, unbeknownst to many, the island has a small post office where guests can mail postcards to friends and family back home — a fun and low-cost activity for everyone in your group. You can also treat your loved ones to something from the on-site souvenir shop or straw market. Animal lovers may have the opportunity to snap a selfie with Ted, the island’s absolutely adorable resident donkey.

Last but not least, couples can even choose to get married on Half Moon Cay. The oceanfront scenery and on-site chapel serve as the perfect setting for nuptials. Both cruise lines offer wedding packages and can provide further information and assistance to help plan your special day.

About Half Moon Cay Cruise Port

The Half Moon Cay Cruise Port is different from other popular Carnival Cruise Ports, such as Amber Cove and Grand Turk. Both Amber Cove and Grand Turk have many amenities for their visitors, including a swimming pool and restaurants. Half Moon Cay is much larger. It is a private island owned by Carnival Corporation . Thus, it is only accessible by its cruise passengers as a port of call.

This secluded destination provides a tranquil atmosphere, free from the crowds that often accompany popular tourist spots. While you will be visiting the island with your fellow cruise passengers, the beach is over two miles (3.2+ km) long, and there is enough room for everyone to spread out.

Arriving at Half Moon Cay Cruise Port

As your cruise ship approaches the island, you will be greeted with stunning views of the powdery white sand on its beach and the vibrant turquoise waters that surround the island. Your cruise ship will anchor about a quarter mile away from the island. Half Moon Cay does not have a deep water dock, thus, taking a tender is required to reach the island.

Taking a Tender to the Island

If you are a new cruiser, you might be wondering what a tender is. Some cruise ports, like Catalina Island and Cabo San Lucas , do not have a dock or pier for cruise ships. Half Moon Cay is surrounded by shallow waters. Thus, the cruise ship stops about a quarter mile from the Half Moon Cay Cruise Port. Passengers are taken to the port by shuttle boats known as tender boats.

Each cruise line and cruise ships have a tender process in place for its passengers. We sailed to Half Moon Cay on the Carnival Magic. The process on the Carnival Magic included picking up a ticket the night before our stop on the island. Each ticket had a group number. Passengers were called by group number to board the shuttle to the island. The process was fairly quick, and we were on the island about 30 minutes after our number was called. It takes about 10 or so minutes to reach the island once the tender boat leaves the cruise ship.

Other cruise ships have a sticker process where passengers are given a sticker with a number. The rest of the process is similar in that the group number is called. Your cruise ship will let you know well in advance what the process is for disembarking at Half Moon Cay.

Construction of a Dock at Half Moon Cay Cruise Port

We visited Half Moon Cay in June of 2024. We were happy to see that Carnival Corporation was in the process of building a dock on the island. The agreement to build the dock was entered into in 2019. However, the pandemic delayed the construction. The construction was far from the main passenger areas, so the construction did not affect current visitors. Having a dock at Half Moon Cay Cruise Port will make the process of getting off the ship and getting to the island much quicker and easier. Especially if you forget something in your cabin.

The Fort San Salvador Welcome Center at Half Moon Cay

When you arrive on Half Moon Cay, you will enter the island through the Fort San Salvador Welcome Center. There are a couple of great opportunities for photographs as you enter the welcome center. There is also a map of the island at the entrance. You can take a picture of the map for reference. If you don’t, it’s not a problem, as there will be various maps around the island to guide you.

Shops at the Welcome Center

There are a few shops where you can purchase souvenirs at the Welcome Center. Since the Half Moon Cay Cruise Port is owned by Carnival, you will find shops that are sponsored by Carnival. You will need to use your Sail and Sign card for purchases at Carnival sponsored shops.

Gift shop on Half Moon Cay

The Straw Market is also found in this area. The Straw Market is where you can purchase Bahamian souvenirs and products that are sold by locals who go to the island. During our visit, only cash was accepted at the Straw Market so it is a good idea to be prepared with a bit of cash when you arrive on Half Moon Cay.

Rumrunners Bar

Rumrunners Bar is located in the Welcome Center area and is the first bar you will see when you arrive on Half Moon Cay. It is a great place to get a drink to start off the day. You will need to use your Sail and Sign card to purchase drinks. Also, if you purchased the Cheers! Drink Package you will not be able to use it in port as it does not transfer to the island.

Ride the Tram at Half Moon Cay

There is a tram available to get you to various parts of the island. The main tram line which is printed on the maps located around the island, goes from the Welcome Center to the Food Pavilion. However, as we were walking and exploring the island, we saw various trams and excursion buses in other parts of the island. Riding the tram is one of the best things to do on Half Moon Cay, as it is an easy way to get around the island, especially on a hot day. The drivers were conscientious and asked us if we needed a ride as it was a hot day in the Caribbean. Don’t be afraid to flag down a tram or bus if you need a lift.

The Beach at Half Moon Cay Cruise Port

Half Moon Cay has a beautiful crescent-shaped beach. The beach is long and is a soft white sand beach. The turquoise water is just as beautiful. Spending time on the beach is one of the best things to do on Half Moon Cay. It is a great beach for swimming, snorkeling, and other water sports. Or for simply enjoying a perfect beach day. The beach is a short walk from the Welcome Center. If you are one of the first people to arrive on the island, there will be an ample amount of space and the beach will not be crowded. As more people arrive, the beach will get more crowded. This is generally because people go to the closest part of the beach from the Welcome Center.

The beach on Half Moon is over two miles long, and there is a lot of space. If you want a less crowded experience, you should walk further down the beach. The further you go, the less crowded the beach. There are free loungers available in most areas of the beach.

View of the Beach looking towards the cruise port

The beach is lined with various types of trees, including palm trees. You will find some shade closer to the tree line. Finding shade is ideal as the sun on Half Moon Cay can be very strong and unforgiving when it comes to sunburns.

Clamshell, Cabana, and Villa Rentals on Half Moon Cay

It can get hot in the Caribbean. Luckily, there are a variety of beach rentals available to make your stay even more comfortable on Half Moon Cay. There are many clamshells available for rent on the beach. The clamshells come with two chairs and do sell out quickly. If you are interested in renting a clamshell, you should book one prior to arriving at Half Moon Cay. The clamshell rental is $49.00.

There are several different types of cabanas and villas to rent, each with different perks. The cabanas range from smaller-style open-air cabanas to two-story villas. The cabanas and villas include snacks, water, soda, and snorkeling gear. There is also a private oasis that includes a hot tub, lunch, drinks, and personal butler and bartender.

The cost for renting a cabana starts at $499.00. Cabana rentals are for four people with an extra-person charge for each additional guest up to a maximum of six guests. Two-story villa rentals start at $799.00. The rental is for eight people with an extra-person charge for each additional guest up to a maximum of 18 guests. Private Oasis rentals start at $1,849.00. The rental is for 12 guests with an extra-person charge for each additional guest up to a maximum of 24 guests. These prices are current as of August 2024.

Water Sports Centers on Half Moon Cay

There are three water sports centers on Half Moon Cay. You can rent various types of equipment at the centers, including kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, Hobie cats (small catamarans), and snorkeling equipment. There are also umbrellas available to rent. The first water sports center is located near the Welcome Center by the beach. The second is located further down the beach. The third water sports center is located at BoneFish Lagoon which is on the opposite side of the beach swimming area and where the wave runner and stingray excursion is held.

The Bahamian Church at Half Moon Cay Cruise Port

There is a Bahamian church that you can visit on Half Moon Cay. You can stop by and visit the church or plan a vow renewal at the church. Half Moon Cay is a beautiful island and this would be a beautiful place to have a vow renewal ceremony.

Bars on Half Moon Cay

What would a private island retreat be without a bar? Luckily there are several bars on the island where you can purchase refreshing drinks. Unfortunately, if you have purchased the Cheers Drink Package , the package does not transfer to the island, and you will have to purchase your drinks. You can purchase both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks at the bars.

Rumrunners Bar is located in the Welcome Center area. It is the first bar you will come to when you get off the shuttle boat on the island.

“I Wish I Could Stay Here Forever” Bar

The “I Wish I Could Stay Here Forever” Bar is the second bar you will come to on Half Moon Cay. It is located near the beach and the Massage Cabana. This is where you will find the often photographed, very popular, and very Instagrammable “I Wish I Could Stay Here Forever” sign. Stop by and get a picture of your own of this popular sign.

The Bell Bar

The Bell Bar is the third bar you will come to on Half Moon Cay. It is located close to the Food Pavilion BBQ area. The Bell Bar is in a great location if you want to purchase drinks to have with your lunch. The bell Bar is open from 10:45 am to 2:00 pm.

Captain Morgan On the Rocks Island Bar

Captain Morgan’s On the Rocks Island Bar is one of the popular bars on the island. Partly because of its design. The bar is a pirate ship and is right off the beach near many of the private cabanas and not too far from the Food Pavilion. Captain Morgan On the Rocks Island Bar is open until 3:00 pm.

Satellite Beach Bars and Drink Cars

The beach at Half Moon Cay Cruise Port is over two miles long. Depending on the part of the beach where you decide to spend your time, you could find that you are far from one of the bars. Luckily, there are Satellite beach bars spread throughout the beach area where you can purchase drinks, including water and frozen drinks. You will also see several drink cars making their way up and down the beach. You can purchase a variety of drinks from the cars, including water and frozen drinks.

Food on Half Moon Cay

There are a couple of places where you can get a bite to eat on the island. The main options are the BBQ lunch at the Food Pavilion and the Lobster Shack.

BBQ Food Pavilion

One of the best things about making a port stop at Half Moon Cay is that a BBQ lunch is included with your cruise fare. Carnival staff prepares a BBQ lunch for guests on the island. You don’t have to worry about purchasing lunch or having to go back to the ship to have lunch. The BBQ lunch is available from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm and is a buffet-style lunch. The menu consists of Caribbean Jerk Chicken, BBQ ribs, hamburgers, and hot dogs. The sides include salads, mac and cheese, rice, potato salad, and coleslaw. Desserts include fresh fruit, cookies, and cakes. The menu items can and do change.

A tip as you prepare to get in line for lunch. We discovered that there were two lines at each serving station. One line was for the hamburger and hot dog option, and the second line was for the BBQ ribs and Jerk chicken. There are signs that help guide you to the line where you can get your preferred entree option. Another important tip is to bring your own water with you on the island, especially if it is hot. While there are several drink stations in the Food Pavilion, the line for drinks can get long. There is also the risk of running out of drinks as all the food and drinks are taken off the ship prior to passengers disembarking. Since drinks are limited, it is best to bring water with you.

Lobster Shack

The Lobster Shack is a food option if you do not want to have the BBQ lunch and prefer to have seafood. Carnival offers fresh catch of the day, steamed lobster by the pound, and steamed snow crab by the pound. They also have peel-and-eat shrimp and fresh oysters.

If you arrive at Half Moon Cay via Holland America the menu differs a little. A few of the menu options for Holland America passengers include conch and seafood chowder, lobster with Caribbean rice, and a lobster roll. The food at the Lobster Shack is an additional cost.

Free Activities on Half Moon Cay

Carnival offers several shore excursions on Half Moon Cay, But if you are looking for a relaxing stay and don’t want to bother paying for any shore excursions, there are many free things to do and enjoy on Half Moon Cay.

Half Moon Cay Lagoon Aqua Park for Kids

The Half Moon Cay Lagoon Aqua Park is perfect for kids. The Aqua Park is a small water park located in front of the beach area near the Welcome Center. The water park has a splash pad with shallow water, small water slides, and climbable sea creatures for kids. There is also a water cannon and water drops so kids can have fun getting wet. The Aqua Park for kids is a great way to start the day especially if your kids are a little nervous about entering the ocean.

Half Moon Cay Playground

Kids can enjoy spending time at the Half Moon Cay playground. The playground has a pirate ship and tree houses with slides and swings, and a shaded cabana for parents to watch their kids play. The playground has very little shade, so it is important to have sunscreen and water on hand.

The kid's playground on Half Moon Cay

Beginner Snorkel Area

The beginner snorkel area is located right off the beach, close to the Welcome Center. If you packed your own snorkel equipment this is one of the best free things to do on Half Moon Cay. This area is relatively calm, has a small reef offshore, and is a great place for snorkeling.

Half Moon Cay Beach

The best free thing to do on Half Moon Cay is enjoy the beautiful beach. Free loungers are available for use and are located throughout the beach, even in the farther areas of the beach. The further you go up the beach, the more tranquil and quiet the beach becomes, as there are fewer people further away from the Welcome Center. You can rent umbrellas if you need an umbrella for your lounger.

Relax on a Hammock

If you decide to take a walk and explore Half Moon Cay, you will come across hammocks tied across palm trees. The hammocks are free to use and a great way to relax after going for a walk.

The Sports Center on Half Moon Cay

If you are interested in a game of volleyball, beach soccer, or basketball, you will find courts available at the sports center. The volleyball court is a sand court which is perfect since you’re on an island. The beach soccer court is the same court as the volleyball court. The basketball court is a full court. If you do decide to play any of the available sports, you should have plenty of water on hand as it can get very hot on the island.

Take a Nature Walk Throughout the Island

There are several nature trails throughout Half Moon Cay where you can take a nature walk and explore the island. There is very little incline and the paths are a mix of sand and paved paths. The paths start near the Welcome Center and weave through the island. There are signs directing you to various areas on the island. This is a great way to get your steps in. If you do take a nature walk, make sure you have sufficient water, as it can get hot on the island, and there is limited shade on the trail.

Birdwatching

Half Moon Cay is a preserve and a wild bird sanctuary. The island is a great place to go bird-watching. There are over 50 species of birds living on the island that avid bird watchers can find, such as burrowing owls, Bahamian pintails, and tobacco doves, to name a few.

Paid Shore Excursions on Half Moon Cay

There are several excursions available on Half Moon Cay. Since this is a private island, all excursions are sponsored by the cruise line. There is no option to plan a separate excursion on your own. This is a disadvantage when it comes to the cost of excursions because there is no option to find lower-cost excursions than what is offered. However, many of the excursions are a lot of fun and worth going on. And you can still find several lower-cost excursions. Many of the excursions are short, making it possible to enjoy more than one excursion while in Half Moon Cay. These are a sample of the excursions available and not a complete list of all excursions.

Stingray Adventure

The stingray adventure is a popular excursion. The stingray adventure is a guided tour that takes place at a cove in the lagoon, where the water is relatively shallow. You do need to know how to swim in order to go on this excursion. Snorkel gear and lockers are included with this excursion.

Combo Eco Bike and Hike Tour

On the combo eco bike and hike tour, you start off exploring the island via eco bike. You ride to Pegasus Ranch, where the swimming horses are kept. Afterward, you explore the island on a hike. You will hike up the ridge for a nice view of BoneFish Lagoon. Water and soda are included in this excursion.

Horseback Riding by Land and Sea

The Horseback Riding by Land and Sea excursion is probably the most popular excursion on the island. You begin by riding around the island on horseback. You explore the beach and work your way back to Pegasus Ranch. After your land ride, you will take a break at the ranch and then ride your horse as it swims in the ocean close to the shoreline. Water and lockers are included in this excursion. Closed-toe shoes are required for the land part of the excursion.

Tropical Kayak Adventure

The Tropical Kayak Adventure is a guided kayak tour through BoneFish Lagoon. The lagoon is part of the protected habitat. You will kayak the lagoon, explore the mangroves, and see the wildlife in the area. There is a stop where you will be able to see local marine life, such as starfish, sea cucumbers, and conch.

I love kayaking, and I really enjoyed the Tropical Kayak Adventure, especially since the guide was very knowledgeable about the area.

Eco Lagoon Tour

I’m always up for a glass-bottom boat tour. The Eco Lagoon is exactly that. A tour on a glass-bottom boat where you can view the local marine life through a glass bottom on a boat. The tour lasts about an hour and a half and costs about $45.00 per adult. While I normally would jump on this type of excursion, I thought the price was a bit high for this excursion, especially when I have been on similar excursions in ports such as Cabo San Lucas and Catalina Island for $20.00 to $25.00 a person.

Island Tram Calypso Tour

The Island Tram Calypso tour is a great tour to take as an introduction to the island. On this tour you will ride an open-air tram and explore the island. The Calypso tour goes beyond the public transportation tram and takes you to areas such as Canon Point, the Pegasus Ranch, Stingray Cove, and the island farm. This is a great way to explore the island and get an idea of where you might want to explore further on your own.

What Cruise Passengers Need to Know About Half Moon Cay Cruise Port

carnival cruise in Half Moon Cay

Where Is Half Moon Cay?

Half Moon Car is located roughly 100 miles (160 KM) southeast of Nassau. The island is midway between Cat Island and the islands of Eleuthera in the Bahamas.

Half Moon Cay was formerly known as “Little San Salvador Island.” However, the name was changed to reflect the crescent-shaped beach at the island’s west end.

Which Cruises Go to Half Moon Cay?

Holland America Line and Carnival cruise ships visit Half Moon Cay. Although, it’s important to mention that not all cruise itineraries include Half Moon Cay as a port of call.

Additionally, Half Moon Cay was owned by Norwegian Cruise Line in the past. However, it was sold to Holland America for 6 million dollars in 1996.

How Do You Get to Half Moon Cay?

Since reefs and shallow waters surround Half Moon Cay, passengers must be tendered to and from the Cay. Furthermore, there is no deep-water dock, which makes it impossible for cruise ships to dock at Half Moon Cay.

The ferry ride lasts for around 10 to 15 minutes. However, getting everyone onboard and off the tenders can add 10 to 15 minutes to the whole process.

If you want to spend the full day on Half Moon Cay, you should get up early to be the first in line for the tenders. Tender lines can get long for disembarkation because many people are simultaneously trying to leave the cruise ship.

Port Half Moon Cay cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Half Moon Cay, Bahamas Carnival private island. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Half Moon Cay (officially Little San Salvador Island, sized 2400 acres / 9,7 km2) is located approx 10 mi / 16 km southeast of Nassau , and halfway between the Bahamian islands Cat and Eleuthera. This is a privately owned island, one of the assets of HAL-Holland America Line (subsidiary company and brand of Carnival Corporation ). The island's namesake is Belize's Half Moon Caye .

Half Moon Cay is an exclusive port of call for all HAL and CCL-Carnival Cruise Line ships operating in the Caribbean.

Prior to Holland America , the island was owned by NCL-Norwegian Cruise Line .

Also owned by Carnival Corporation are the Bahamian island resorts Princess Cays (on Eleuthera Island) and Celebration Key (on Grand Bahama Island/near Freeport's cruise port Lucaya ).

In late September 2019, Carnival Corporation signed an agreement with the Bahamian government to build two new cruise ports - one on Grand Bahama Island ( Celebration Key /US100+ million) and one on Little San Salvador Island/Half Moon Cay (US$90+ million).

Both Bahamian port development projects (budgeted USD 190+M) were planned to start by mid-2020 but were postponed due to the COVID crisis. Their design plans exceeded the USCG guidelines for withstanding Category 5 hurricanes and both can handle the world's largest passenger liners .

On Half Moon Cay was constructed a new pier/dock.

By the original purchase agreement with the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, only ~10% of Little San Salvador Island is occupied by cruise-related facilities, meaning that ~90% of the territory is classified as a Nature Preserve/Wild Bird Sanctuary, remains natural and is kept pristine.

Carnival private island Half Moon Cay (Bahamas)

Half Moon Cay is located around 10 miles (16 km) southeast of Nassau. HAL purchased the island for a price of US$6 million in December 1996. It has since developed 200,000 m2 (50 acres) of the 9.7 km2 (2,400-acre) island, with the stated goal of keeping as much habitat as possible. Half Moon Cay is also a nesting area for waterfowl. It does not have deep water docking that requires the use of tenders for cruise passengers to embark and  disembark.

Holland America (HAL) bought the island in December 1996 for USD 6 million. Subsequently, the island property was developed with some 50 acres (200,000 m2, or about 2% of the island) of infrastructure and facilities. Carnival Corporation invested USD 15 million in the development project. Daily operations are handled by around 100 employees (residents from the nearby islands). This private island doesn't have deepwater dock, so ships are required to anchor and transport their passengers to the shore via tender boats.

In November 2017, HAL celebrated the island's 20th Anniversary.

Half Moon Cay island refurbishment

In summer 2016, the island underwent refurbishment, after which new amenities were introduced.

  • Among the upgrades were new sailboats, catamarans, Water Trikes, Jet Skis (watercraft),
  • All beach-side cabanas and villas were renovated (new painting and furnishings).
  • Grand Cabana's decor was changed.
  • 3 more beach drink locations were added.
  • "Captain Morgan on the Rocks" bar's furniture was replaced.
  • The operated on the island horseback riding tours were boosted with 14 more horses and 2 more grazing pastures.
  • The Ranch's changing rooms were renovated.
  • The island’s Welcome Center received new furniture.

Half Moon Cay cruise terminal

Currently, cruise ships to Half Moon Cay anchor at sea (in the bay) and transport/ferry their passengers ashore via ship's tender boats. In early-August 2019, HAL Properties Ltd (subsidiary of Carnival Corporation ) announced plans to add a docking pier at Half Moon Cay to allow passengers direct disembarkation ashore. With the new pier project (budgeted ~USD 80 million) cruisers will access the island easier and quicker (allowing more ashore time) and also stormy weather will not be an issue anymore.

Carnival's Half Moon island has a 2,5 ml / 4 km long beach. Island's infrastructure includes:

  • Welcome Center - has Information Booth, Shore Excursions Booth, Ice Cream Parlor, Rumrunners Bar, restrooms.
  • Bahamian Church (cruise weddings), Straw Market (gift shop)
  • post office, first aid station, Food Pavilion (complimentary restaurant with open-air seating; burgers, hot dogs, salads, fresh fruit), three Water Sports centers (water toys rentals)
  • Lookout Bar, Bell Bar, "I Wish I Could Stay Here Forever" Bar
  • Sports Center, Half Moon Salon (hair / barber services, manicure / pedicure), Massage cabana (spa treatments)
  • Club HAL (Holland America kids complex /complimentary programming)
  • Half Moon Lagoon Aqua Park (kids water park with slides and climable sea creatures)
  • tram, tender pier.
  • In mid-November 2016, Holland America unveiled a new restaurant on Half Moon Cay, with a menu showcasing one dish: lobster. The new "Lobster Shack" is offered in addition to the island's usual complimentary barbeque. It serves up grilled spiny lobster with rice and Caribbean coconut beans and one of two salsas (pineapple or sofrito). While the cruise ship is docked, its cooks come ashore to operate the venue (open between 11 am - 2 pm) following a recipe developed in part with the line's partner Master Chef Rudi Sodamin. Lunch costs USD 20 per person. The new restaurant's inauguration was on Nov 11, during the MS Koningsdam 's inaugural cruise. The venue is casual, with a Tiki hut-style vibe and "no shoes, no shirt" dress code. It's located on the beach, next to the "I Wish I Could Stay Here Forever" bar.
  • Cruises to Half Moon Cay by Carnival Cruise Line ships also offer access to Lobster Shack, but Carnival offers a different menu.

The following map of Half Moon Cay shows all facilities on the island (including Aqua Park, Stingray Adventure, Aqua Trax, 2-story villas and private cabanas locations), as well as all snorkeling areas and watersports centers.

Among the Half Moon Cay's activities are swimming and sunbathing, scuba diving and snorkeling, jet-skiing, deep-sea fishing, parasailing, glass-bottom boating, horseback riding, cycling, nature walks, hiking. Available rentals are for Hobie catamarans, Sunfish sailboats, windsurfing boards, sea kayaks, paddleboats, Aqua Cycle Trikes, Aqua Trax Wave Runners, snorkeling gear. The island also has sports facilities (volleyball-basketball courts), outdoor games (horseshoes shuffleboard), fitness track with outdoor exercise equipment. Carnival Opens Bookings For 2026-27 Cruises from Tampa and Mobile

  • September 4, 2024

Carnival Paradise in Tampa

Carnival Cruise Line has opened bookings for its 2026-27 sailings from Tampa and Mobile, offering cruises to The Bahamas, the Caribbean and the Panama Canal.

“As America’s cruise line, we continue to sail from more U.S. homeports than any other line and our 2026-27 offerings from Tampa and Mobile are great examples of that commitment to provide our guests with the convenience of sailing from homeports that are a short drive away,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line. “With a variety of itineraries, many of which feature our own unique destinations Celebration Key and Half Moon Cay, our guests will have plenty of great vacation options, and our travel advisor partners will have some unique experiences to offer their clients.”

Marking 30 years of year-round sailing from Tampa, the cruise line will continue this tradition in 2026-27, with the Carnival Paradise based in Tampa year-round and Carnival Legend offering seasonal sailings.

The Carnival Paradise will offer a variety of cruises, including four-day Western Caribbean itineraries, four- to six-day Bahamas cruises and five- to six-day Western Caribbean voyages. Destinations include Cozumel, Mahogany Bay, Belize, Grand Cayman, Celebration Key, Princess Cays and Nassau.

From November 2026 to March 2027, the Legend will sail from Tampa on various Western Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries. These include six- and seven-day cruises visiting Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Costa Maya, Belize, Ocho Rios, Montego Bay, Mahogany Bay, Celebration Key, Half Moon Cay and Nassau. Additionally, three eight-day Western Caribbean sailings and two eight-day Panama voyages, with stops in Limon, Costa Rica; Grand Cayman; and Colon, Panama, are available. Guests on these Panama sailings can purchase shore excursions to tour the Panama Canal. A 13-day Carnival Journeys cruise to Panama will also be offered, featuring ports in Aruba, Curacao, Amber Cove and Colon.

The Carnival Spirit will return to Mobile for its seasonal homeport with a special 16-day Carnival Journeys cruise that transits the Panama Canal. The voyage departs Seattle on October 8, 2026, with stops in Cabo San Lucas, Puntarenas, Costa Rica and Cartagena, Colombia. Earlier in the year, Carnival will offer a Carnival Journeys sailing from Mobile to Seattle in April 2026, marking the first cruises connecting the ship’s two seasonal homeports before its summer series in Alaska.

From October 2026 to March 2027, Carnival Spirit will resume its seasonal schedule from Mobile, featuring six-, seven- and eight-day Bahamas cruises. Six-day cruises will include stops at Celebration Key and either Nassau, Bimini, or Princess Cays. Seven-day cruises will visit Celebration Key, Key West, and either Half Moon Cay or Princess Cays and Nassau. Eight-day cruises will feature Key West, Celebration Key, Nassau and either Half Moon Cay or Princess Cays.

Carnival fans are about to get access to a massively revamped private island

Gene Sloan

Exciting news, Carnival Cruise Line fans: A visit to a massively revamped private island is in your future.

The world's second-largest cruise line on Tuesday announced a wide range of new Caribbean itineraries that would include a visit to Half Moon Cay, a private island that the line said will undergo a massive expansion.

Scheduled to begin in 2026, the new itineraries will be available on seven Carnival ships sailings out of four home ports: Miami and Port Canaveral in Florida; Galveston, Texas; and Baltimore, Maryland.

Already celebrated for its beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters, Half Moon Cay will receive a major makeover that includes the addition of expanded beach areas, new dining venues and new drinking venues, Carnival said.

Also in the works for the private island is a new pier that will allow Carnival's biggest ships, including the 5,282-passenger Mardi Gras and sister vessels Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee , to dock at the island.

In its announcement Tuesday, Carnival offered relatively few details on what the expansion of Half Moon Cay would entail but said additional information about the project would be announced soon.

Half Moon Cay originally opened to cruise ships in 1997. At the time, it was leased and used exclusively by Holland America, a sister brand to Carnival. But over the years, it began to welcome Carnival ships, too.

Carnival bought Holland America in 1989, and both lines are now part of parent company Carnival Corp.

Holland America leased Half Moon Cay for 99 years in 1996. Originally called Little San Salvador and renamed Half Moon Cay by the line, the 2,400-acre island was uninhabited and without running water or electricity at the time of the lease's signing.

Holland America initially spent $16 million preparing it for cruise ships and has continued to invest in it over the years. The island is now home to beach villas that can be rented for the day, an oceanside cabana for massages and a multilevel watery fun zone for kids, among a long list of attractions.

Carnival on Tuesday said new itineraries with a revamped Half Moon Cay on the schedule starting in 2026 would include a variety of seven-night Eastern Caribbean and Western Caribbean sailings out of Miami on Carnival Celebration — one of Carnival's biggest ships.

In addition to Half Moon Cay, the new Carnival Celebration sailings will include stops at Carnival's soon-to-open Celebration Key and a mix of the following ports: Nassau in the Bahamas; Grand Turk; Amber Cove, Dominican Republic; Cozumel, Mexico; Mahogany Bay in Honduras; St. Thomas; and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Other new itineraries with a revamped Half Moon Cay on the schedule will include seven-night sailings to the Eastern Caribbean and Western Caribbean out of Port Canaveral on Mardi Gras.

Those trips will include stops at a mix of the following ports in addition to Half Moon Cay: Celebration Key, Grand Turk, Amber Cove, Nassau, Cozumel and Mahogany Bay.

In addition to Mardi Gras, Carnival Venezia will sail new itineraries out of Port Canaveral.

New itineraries out of Galveston will include six- and eight-night cruises to the Western Caribbean on Carnival Jubilee.

The new six-night itineraries will include visits to Cozumel and Mahogany Bay. The eight-night itineraries will bring visits to Key West, Florida; Nassau; Half Moon Cay; and Celebration Key.

The new itineraries out of Galveston will kick off in September 2026. Prior to that, Carnival Jubilee will operate seven-night itineraries visiting Cozumel; Mahogany Bay; and Costa Maya, Mexico.

Two other Carnival ships, Carnival Dream and Carnival Breeze, will sail new itineraries out of Galveston.

Carnival also announced Tuesday new weeklong voyages to a revamped Half Moon Cay out of Baltimore on Carnival Pride.

In addition to Half Moon Cay or Princess Cays, another private island, the sailings will bring stops at Nassau and Celebration Key. Carnival Pride also will sail cruises to Bermuda in 2026.
