Rent a caravan for your next road trip in Kerala

When in Kerala, a houseboat experience over its serene backwaters is a must-do. You can embrace the peace and quiet, get a glimpse into the small towns that dot the banks and take in the beautiful views of nature as you sail through. But if you would rather explore the state by road, there’s a brand new way to do it. Kerala Tourism, as part of its Keravan Kerala initiative, has introduced luxury caravans and caravan parks for tourists to explore the unmatched beauty of God’s Own Country.

What do the caravans look like?

The luxury caravans —launched by Kerala Tourism, BharatBenz and Autobahn Trucking—are stylish vehicles that can comfortably seat 2-4 people. There are several built-in comforts, including air conditioning, a lounge with comfortable seating, an infotainment system, a fully-equipped kitchen with essential appliances, a spacious bedroom with a double-bunk and a washroom with a shower. You can even opt for a caravan that comes with a set-up for an awning and outdoor seating, perfect for quick pit-stops and tea breaks.

Where can I park the caravan?

While you can park your caravan wherever permissible, the Kerala government is also building specialised caravan parks—spaces for caravan travellers to park and stay overnight or for longer. In Kerala, the parks will be located in natural settings that are well-connected to main roads. The parks will remain open 24x7 during tourist season and will also be available on-demand. The parks will be designed to be completely safe and secure spaces where you can rest and take extended breaks from your road trip.

The caravans can be booked through local accredited tour operators throughout the state. Over time, the plan is to enable online bookings and the Kerala Tourism website will soon have details of all the tour operators providing the service. The cost will be decided by the private tour operators.

Are the caravans child-friendly? Are they pet-friendly?

Kids and pets are welcome in the caravans so you can take a family road trip without having to leave anyone behind. You can also request specific features like medical care, if you require it.

Where can you travel with the caravans?

Within Kerala, you will be able to drive your caravan through the entire state. Explore the gorgeous tea plantations in Munnar, the palm-lined beaches in Alappuzha, the temples in Thrissur and the chilly weather and spices in Wayanad. There are also plans to open up caravan travel to less-explored and otherwise inaccessible spots in the state. If you’re looking to drive the caravans beyond Kerala, you might be able to do so in the future. Kerala’s Department of Tourism will soon be in talks with tourism departments in neighbouring states to ensure seamless caravan travel across state borders.

Kerala's first Caravan Park to come up in Vagamon

As the state tourism is set to launch the first caravan park in Vagamon in Idukki district on February 25, Tourism Minister of the state, PA Mohamed Riyas in a Facebook post said that the initiative has been receiving encouraging response from the investors since the policy was announced in September last year.

Kerala's caravan tourism lets tourists indulge in sustainable travel experience

Thiruvananthapuram: Caravan parks coming up across Kerala as part of the Tourism Department's "Keravan Kerala" project will be located in natural settings, giving top priority to tourists' safety and security and hygienic features, the state government said here on Monday.

"What makes Kerala's Caravan Tourism policy different from others is that it is more responsible and more committed to local communities. The policy has laid the greatest emphasis on the safety and security of tourists and sustainable use of local resources in creating caravan parks," Tourism Minister P A Mohamed Riyas said.

The stakeholder-friendly Caravan Tourism policy, announced last month, also opens up possibility of turning accessible but unexplored places in the state into alluring destinations for the caravan travellers to park and stay.

The initiative is designed to make tourism a sustainable activity that would bring benefits to local communities and also scale up opportunities for the industry.

The minister said tourist caravans will be comfortable, fully regulation-compliant and safe. Likewise, the caravan parks will also be the most secure places that would not upset the natural and cultural settings of the locale, he noted.

"There will not be any garish constructions, leaving the place as natural as possible. Each Caravan Park will have a sewage treatment plant. The basic theme of the project is to club the luxury of caravan with the natural look of the park," he said.

The experiential potential of caravan tourism is enormous as visitors can savour the village life experience in a place where they are halting.

Whether it is a village with swathes of paddy field, a fishermen's hamlet or a hub of traditional industry or craft, they can have a close look at the daily chores of the community, the state Tourism Department said.

The experiential feature, directly linked to Kerala's successful Responsible Tourism (RT) initiative, has the potential to generate employment and commercial opportunities for local communities, local self-government institutions, small and micro enterprises, artists and collective endeavours of women like Kudumbashree, it said.

KTDC launches Kerala’s first Caravan Tourism package from today

Imparting an added momentum to the state’s Keravan Kerala initiative, Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) has come out with an attractive ‘Caravan Holidays’ package, which offers the tourists a high-end experience of travelling through the panoramic settings at an affordable rate with an array of frills attached including free breakfast and parking.

Under the package, a tourist can enjoy all comforts and compliments while travelling on a luxury caravan paying Rs 3,999 plus tax per person per night. The ride fare per kilometre has been fixed at Rs 40. Each caravan will carry up to four adults and two children.

As Kerala’s premium hospitality service provider, the state-run KTDC has struck an agreement with caravan service providers opting to operate under the package.

An initial safari circuit worked out as part of the package covers Kumarakom-Vagamon- Thekkady route. Starting from the lake-side Kumarakom in the morning, the caravan will reach Vagamon in the afternoon, covering a distance of 80-100 km through the stunning scenic settings of central Kerala. The package offers free parking and a bonfire experience for tourists at Keravan Meadows, Vagamon.

The next day, the journey will resume taking visitors to eco-tourism hub Thekkady, where they will be provided a stay at one of the KTDC’s properties. Tourists can opt for a single-day journey or travel through the entire route.

“It is significant that KTDC is launching this highly attractive package when tourism activities are back in full swing in Kerala. This wholesome package aims at providing a high-end experience to domestic as well as foreign tourists at a reasonable rate,” said PK Sasi, Chairman, KTDC.

This will also help stakeholders in the tourism sector to quickly recover from the downturn caused by the staggered Covid-19 pandemic, Tourism Director Shri V R Krishna Teja said.

This is the first package to be announced as part of the recently-launched caravan tourism project. The response from the industry to the Caravan Holidays has been encouraging, said V Vigneshwari, Managing Director, KTDC.

The compliments in the package include free veg breakfast, refreshments to be served on the caravan, free snacks, tea and coffee in the park, a bonfire experience and a Wi-Fi connection for tourists.

The breakfast will have a choice of seasonal fruit juices, toast, butter and jam, cornflakes or porridge, followed by a course of South Indian dishes like idly, dosa, appam, and idiyappam with accompaniments like chutney and sambar. For those opting for the North Indian menu, poori bhaji and stuffed parathas will be served with a variety of spice-rich curries.

BharatBenz Introduces Customised Camper Caravan For Kerala Tourism

Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV), the makers of BharatBenz trucks and buses has unveiled its new customised caravan for the Kerala Tourism Department. The ready-for-road camper van built in collaboration with Autobahn Trucking Dealership and JCBL Group will be used for Kerala's latest initiative, Keravan Kerala. Under the new initiative, the Kerala Tourism Department wants to encourage the camping culture in the state, in line with the post-pandemic travel preferences of tourists. Thus, the department has chosen with BharatBenz to build the luxury camper caravan, which comes with a host of in-built features, and can be hired by tourists.

Commenting on the new development, Rajaram Krishnamurthy, Vice President, Marketing, Sales and Customer Service, DICV said, "The pandemic has fundamentally transformed the trend and approach to our travel habits. Travellers are now expecting new-age smart solutions and our BharatBenz chassis is perfectly suited for this application. The 'Keravan Caravan' epitomises absolute luxury and unparalleled comfort. We are thrilled to witness the gradual revival of the tourism industry and welcome the new investor-friendly tourism policy."

The luxury caravan comes with all modern amenities like recliner seats, a television, a kitchen area and comfortable double bunk beds

The luxury caravans are built on BharatBenz's 1017 chassis and will be available in two configurations, customised to accommodate two to four travellers. The special creature comforts on offer include a spacious lounge area and modern amenities like recliner seats and a television. It also has a kitchen area that is furnished with all the necessary appliances like a refrigerator, microwave, induction cooktop, and custom-built storage for tableware. The fully air-conditioned caravan also comes with comfortable double bunk beds in the bedroom and a restroom with a shower.

The BharatBenz 1017 is claimed to deliver a comfortable and secure ride thanks to its parabolic suspension, along with a fuel-efficient BS6 engine. The bus chassis' are produced at DICV's state-of-the-art manufacturing plant at Oragadam.

Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV) has unveiled the BharatBenz Caravan. The luxurious and feature-laden vehicle will be used by Kerala Tourism for its latest initiative - ‘Keravan Kerala’.

The BharatBenz Caravan is available in 2 configurations and can be customised for 2 or 4 travellers. The vehicle has a spacious lounge with recliner seats and a television. There is also a kitchen with necessary appliances such as a microwave, refrigerator, and induction cooktop.

The bedroom in the luxurious Caravan consists of double bunk beds. The vehicle also has a restroom fitted with a shower.

The BharatBenz Caravan is built on the BharatBenz 1017 chassis which is produced at DICV’s manufacturing plant at Oragadam, Chennai.

Giving a big push to the caravan tourism project, the Tourism Department has begun online registration for tourist caravan operators and caravan park facilitators. While investors interested in operating tourist caravans can seek registration by logging onto https://www.keralatourism.org/keravan-kerala/register/tourist-caravan , those interested in establishing caravan parks across the state can join the project by getting the registration done through https://www.keralatourism.org/keravan-kerala/register-park/caravan-park . All the details, including subsidies and incentives for investors, parameters of caravan operation, procedures and protocols to be followed, and norms for setting up caravan parks have been laid down in detail in the registration site. They can be accessed through www.keralatourism.org/keravan-kerala The caravan tourism policy , unveiled a couple of months back by the Tourism Minister Mr. P. A. Mohamed Riyas, seeks to usher in a paradigm shift in experiential tourism. Within a short span, the project branded as ‘Keravan Kerala’ has elicited keen interest from auto majors, top travel and hospitality players, local self-government institutions and service providers.   Under the policy, the first 100 caravans will get a subsidy of Rs 7.50 lakhs or 15 per cent of the cost, whichever is less. The next 100 vehicles will get Rs 5 lakhs or 10 per cent of the cost, whichever is less. For 201 to 300 caravans, it will be Rs 2.50 lakhs or 5 per cent of the cost, whichever is less. The subsidy will be available for five caravans for an individual investor or a group, for three years. BharatBenz rolled out its spanking new and features-laden tourism caravan last month. Commercial Vehicle makers Isuzu, Tata Motors and Force Motors are also expected to come out with their tourist caravans soon. Hospitality major CGH Earth has announced plans to set up as many as 10 caravan parks in the state, starting with its first park on a five-acre site in the backdrop of a tea plantation at Marayoor in the Idukki district. There will be two models of caravans - those that can accommodate on two travellers on board and those for a family of four. The caravans should have all in-built comforts such as a sofa-cum-bed, refrigerator, microwave oven, dining table, toilet cubicle, driver’s cabin, internet connection and GPS. Ensuring the safety of guests, the movement of caravans in any part of the state will be digitally monitored. Giving thrust to sustainable development, the policy has made it clear that caravan parks will be located in natural settings without upsetting the environment, giving top priority to tourists’ safety and security.   Caravan parks can be developed as private, public or joint ventures or by local self government institutions on sites that fulfill the parameters. A park, which needs at least 50 cents of land, should have space enough to accommodate five vehicles at a time with facilities like food parks, restrooms, activity area and driver’s lodge.
