Whatever happened to brooks & dunn – everything you need to know.
It’s quite hard to think about country music without Brooks & Dunn in it. It’s no secret that they are one of the best country music duos in history. They have made an indelible mark and enduring impact on the genre’s landscape.
Now, pretty sure fans and folks in country music have been wondering just what’s there to know about Brooks & Dunn. Keep on scrolling below to find out!
Where It All Started
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Brooks & Dunn (@brooksanddunn)
Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn were two artists pursuing their own separate music careers. While they were impeccably talented on their own, a record executive launched them as a duo with the thought that they’d do well together.
Indeed, their careers began heating up. Brooks & Dunn took the country music scene by storm in 1991 when the first four singles off their debut album, Brand New Man , raced to the pinnacle of the country music charts.
Since then, they’ve been collecting dozens of music-industry honors and earning heaps of Top Ten hits. They are, by far, the best-selling country duo of all time and one of the best-selling duos in all music genres.
Their distinct sound that combined honky-tonk dancefloor beats with classic-rock guitar riffs and upbeat arrangements was such a hit to many. Making things even more interesting was their songwriting skills that delivered top-notch material. Meanwhile, Brooks’ raucous energy onstage and Dunn’s brooding presence created a dynamic stage show.
Remember When They Announced Their Split?
After their record-breaking career being country music’s most successful duo, Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn abruptly announced their split on August 10, 2009, which absolutely shocked and saddened fans all over the world.
“After 20 years of making music and riding this trail together, we have agreed as a duo that it’s time to call it a day,” the duo said in a joint statement. They then released their final album, #1’s… And Then Some . They set out on their farewell Last Rodeo Tour and played their last concert together at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on September 3, 2010.
With that, it was over. The members of the country’s dynamic duo embarked on solo careers and have gone on to significant solo success.

But despite the decision to call it quits, Dunn pointed out that there was never a rift between him and his bandmate. “We [broke up] because we’d been doing it for over 20 years and felt like we’d accomplished everything that we could,” he said.
Brooks confirmed that: “We ran out of gas. We needed a break, you know.”
But They Came Back Stronger Than Before
For a band that was said to be disbanded, Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn kept their hands full in the back half of the 2010s. They performed together during the 2015 Academy of Country Music Awards.
That same year, Brooks & Dunn also began a renowned Las Vegas residency with Reba McEntire . It was successful enough that it was extended for seven years until late 2021. Brooks also appeared in Dunn’s single “Damn Drunk,” which was released as the second single off Dunn’s third solo album Tattooed Heart .
In 2019, the popular country duo was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame for their long and storied career. More notably, Brooks & Dunn released a brand-new album, Reboot , where they teamed up with various country stars such as Kacey Musgraves, Luke Combs, Ashley McBryde, and Kane Brown and revisited some of their best hits. The duo then began playing in assorted amphitheaters across the country.
In 2022, Brooks & Dunn surprised fans with their announcement of a big-time return to the road. The iconic duo dipped into their custom cowboy boots once again and were more than ready to rock full-time.
Brooks & Dunn’s Reboot 2022 Tour kicked off on May 5 in Evansville, Indiana. The two-month tour then wound its way throughout the country with some of the best opening acts – this includes Jon Pardi, Walker Hayes, Jordan Davis, Morgan Wade, Tenille Townes, Gabby Barrett, and so much more. Brooks and Dunn made a stop at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena before wrapping things up on June 25 in Detroit, Michigan.
But the party’s far from over! The duo will actually headline the 2023 Carolina Country Musical Festival in Myrtle Beach. Miranda Lambert, Morgan Wallen, and Travis Tritt will be among the more than thirty performers to take the stage during the four-day event.
Indeed, no matter how many years go by, country fans’ love for Brooks & Dunn songs stands the test of time.

Brooks & Dunn bring their final act to Spokane tonight
Wrapping up a nearly 20-year run, duo brings ‘Last Rodeo Tour’
It’s the last roundup for Brooks & Dunn. The iconic country duo, which brings its “Last Rodeo Tour” to the Spokane Arena tonight, is calling it quits after two decades. The final concert is Aug. 10 in Nashville. Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn are bowing out to a final round of fanfare. Two Sundays ago, they won the Academy of Country Music award for best vocal duo for the 10th time. The following night, they received the academy’s Milestone Award during a taping of their upcoming television special, “ACM Presents: Brooks & Dunn – The Last Rodeo.”
Brooks & Dunn released their first record, “Brand New Man,” in 1991 and went on to become country music’s top-selling duo with more than 30 million albums and 23 No. 1 hits.
They also served as role models and springboards for dozens of acts who followed, taking new singers and groups on tour with them.
“Twenty years – to me, that’s like a lifetime,” one of country music’s new guard, Taylor Swift, quipped during the taping of the TV special.
Swift surprised Dunn with a video that showed him doing an imitation of her trademark head shake.
“You had no idea how important that moment is because in 20 years that’s the first time I’ve ever seen him mess his hair up,” Brooks told Swift.
Faith Hill remembered the duo as country’s biggest practical jokers, telling a story from an early 1990s tour on which she opened for them. She turned in late one night in her hotel room and got an unwelcome surprise.
“I pulled back my covers, tucked myself in bed and there it was: a slimy eel thawing out in my sheets,” Hill said.
She sang a poignant rendition of the duo’s “The Long Goodbye,” then left the stage. A moment later two waiters appeared with takeout boxes for Brooks and Dunn, who sat on stage during the taping.
“Oh, it’s eel from Faith,” Brooks said before popping a piece in his mouth.
Dunn quipped: “I’ll save mine.”
Brad Paisley told the story of how the pair were solo artists until Tim DuBois at Arista Nashville came up with the idea to put them together, and told them to go write a song and see what happens.
“Tim introduced us over an enchilada on a Tuesday morning,” Brooks recalled. “He said, ‘I don’t need a boy singer, I’ve got Alan Jackson.’ ”
They came up with “Brand New Man” and “My Next Broken Heart” on consecutive days, and the partnership was sealed.
Each of the 16 performing acts in attendance at the taping got to choose a meaningful tune to play for the special, which will air May 23 on CBS.
George Strait received a standing ovation before playing “Boot Scootin’ Boogie.”
“People ask me all the time who I listen to, and I answer with three simple words: ‘Brooks and Dunn,’ ” Strait said.
Lady Antebellum singers Hillary Scott and Charles Kelley coaxed Dunn and Reba McEntire on stage for “If You See Him/If You See He.” Chesney got them to sing along on “You’re Going to Miss Me When I’m Gone.”
Miranda Lambert chose “Hillbilly Deluxe,” she said, “because it rocks.” Carrie Underwood sang “Neon Moon” the night after making history with her second ACM entertainer of the year win.
Longtime friend Reba McEntire wowed the duo with “Indian Summer” and Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush of Sugarland said they chose “Red Dirt Road” because they write their own material and wanted to pick a song that Brooks & Dunn penned themselves.
Bush told the story of how Dunn started the song on a cocktail napkin and handed it to Brooks to finish.
The night’s most poignant moment came after poet Maya Angelou hailed the duo in a video address.
“In their whole body of work, they’ve shown how much they care about the human condition,” she said.
Jennifer Hudson then performed a show-stopping version of “Believe,” reducing Hill and other members of the audience to tears.
“Girl, have you heard you?” Brooks asked Hudson.
He and Dunn capped off the evening with an all-star jam of “Play Something Country.”
Brooks thanked the many people responsible for the duo’s success, but also kept the crowd laughing.
“People say this is like a marriage breaking up, and, no, it’s not,” he joked. “There’s things involved in a marriage that are not involved in Ronnie’s and my relationship.”
Dunn reminded the crowd that though he and Brooks are ending their run, the music will continue.
“I’m going to buy a secondhand van and get a rusty old horse trailer, throw me some band equipment in it, and go find me a beer joint and keep singing,” he said.
Untapped home equity offers financial flexibility
The cost of borrowing has risen sharply in recent years, so when it comes to tackling a big expense, it’s important to know about the options.
Brooks & Dunn Announce Dates for Farewell Tour
Brooks & Dunn have announced dates for next year's farewell tour which begins April 23 in Sacramento, Calif., and concludes Aug. 8 in Chicago. The duo will visit 47 cities during their Last Rodeo tour, and an additional date for a special concert in Nashville will be revealed later.
In August, Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn announced plans to dissolve their musical partnership after a final tour in 2010. In a joint statement, they said, "After 20 years of making music and riding this trail together, we have agreed as a duo that it's time to call it a day," the statement read. "This ride has been everything and more than we could ever have dreamed .... We owe it all to you, the fans. If you hear rumors, don't believe them. It's just time."
Brooks & Dunn released another greatest hits compilation, #1s ... And Then Some , in September. Last week, their recording of "Cowgirls Don't Cry," a track from their Cowboy Town album, received a Grammy nomination for best country performance by a duo or group with vocals.
Prior to launching the farewell tour, they'll perform March 20 in Texas at RodeoHouston. Ticket information for the tour, including on-sale dates, has not been announced.

Brooks & Dunn End Their Last Rodeo in Nashville
"This isn't a funeral," the always-jovial Kix Brooks said upon taking the stage for the very last time as one-half of country music's most celebrated duo. "We did come here to party!"
Without much fanfare or several celebrity friends making guest appearances, Brooks & Dunn wrapped up their 20-year partnership with a show at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena Thursday, September 2. Proceeds from the show, which featured an opening set by newcomer Tyler Dickerson , will go to benefit the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
Prior to the show, a 15-minute video featuring behind-the-scenes interviews with the duo's band and crew, many of them having been with Kix and partner Ronnie Dunn for most of their run, shone a light on the pair as great bosses and nice guys. Their famous signature steerheads were out in full force located above the stage and on the bass drum (although the bubble-blowing goat and the sky-high inflatable cowgirls were nowhere to be seen!)
As the duo made their way out from behind the stage to begin their fond farewell, the crowd jumped to their feet to give them a standing ovation before a single note was sung. They soon launched into 'Play Something Country,' and that's exactly what they did throughout the night, taking the crowd through a high-energy list of songs including 'Can't Take the Honky Tonk Out of the Girl,' 'Mama Don't Get Dressed up for Nothing' and 'Put a Girl in It,' before slowing it down with Ronnie's lead vocals on 'Never Forgive My Heart,' and Kix singing 'You're Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone.'
The celebratory atmosphere was not as prevalent as one would have thought, but the show was a fitting end for a long and hit-filled career. "This is not a funeral," said Kix. "We did show up to party." He offered thank you's to the band, crew, and the fans that "paid our rent for the last 20 years. God bless each and every one of you." 'One Last Ride' was accompanied by a slide presentation of earlier photos of the two. Splitting the vocal duties nearly in half, Ronnie returned to center stage to perform, 'That's What She Gets for Loving Me' and 'It's Getting Better All the Time,' before addressing the audience and explaining why the two were breaking up. He joked that it was because Kix got the cowboy hat and he got nothing.
For the first and only special guest appearance, the guys performed 'Cowgirls Don't Cry,' and on the last verse Reba McEntire joined in to thunderous applause. When the song ended and hugs and kisses were exchanged, Ronnie affectionately called her a "show stealer."
The two acted as though they were taking audience requests and discarded a handful before deciding on 'How Long Gone,' which led into 'Red Dirt Road,' after which a hush fell over the crowd as Ronnie led into 'Believe.' The show was filled with favorites, including 'Neon Moon,' 'Rock My World (Little Country Girl),' 'Only in America' and 'My Maria,' before the lights went down.
When the lights came back up for the encore, Kix and Ronnie performed 'Boot Scootin' Boogie,' and brought several young girls up on stage -- one of them Ronnie's daughter, Haley -- to dance along. For their swan song, the guys decided to go back to their 1991 hit, 'Brand New Man," after which Kix threw his trademark black hat out into the audience. There were no tears, just a light-hearted push from Kix to Ronnie as an ode to their playful attitudes and the good times they shared through the years.
While Brooks & Dunn have now officially ridden off into the sunset, this isn't the last we'll see of Kix Brooks or Ronnie Dunn. Word has it one or both will have a solo record out soon. One burning question remains, however: who gets custody of the steerheads and inflatable cowgirls?

Music | Review: Acclaimed country act performs 1st Bay Area show in over 14 years
Brooks & dunn finally returned to shoreline amphitheatre.
“We are glad to be back in California,” he said. “We have had some of the greatest parties of our lives in this place.”
And Brooks and his longtime musical partner Ronnie Dunn would have yet another one as the platinum-plus-selling duo — known as Brooks & Dunn — finally brought the Reboot Tour to Shoreline Amphitheatre for some rip-roaring fun on Friday night (June 7).
The approximately 12,000 fans in attendance acted like they’d been counting down the days for this event to happen — and, indeed, a goodly portion probably had been — as evidenced by the way they hooted and hollered, boot-scooted and, of course, boogied through one big hit after another during the 19-song set.
It was the first time that Brooks & Dunn performed in the Bay Area since 2010, which was the same year that the “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” duo originally called it quits on a career that was highlighted by an amazing 20 No. 1 country singles. Five years later, they’d regroup for a lengthy residency with the legendary Reba McEntire in Las Vegas, which nicely set the stage for a full-on reunion tour that was suppose to begin in 2020.
Then COVID hit, of course, which pushed back Brooks & Dunn’s Reboot Tour (and pretty much everything else entertainment related). Fast forward another four years and — well, you can understand why Bay Area fans were so excited to finally get their reunion with the Grammy-winning duo.
Backed by a rock-solid seven-piece band, Brooks & Dunn were in primetime ’90s-era form throughout the roughly 90-minute set. They wasted no time in getting the party started as they opened the show with one of their best — “Brand New Man” — the anthemic title track from the twosome’s landmark debut of 1991.
The 71-year-old Dunn, wearing mirrored sunglasses and a baseball cap on backwards, was in particularly good voice as he crooned through “Brand New Man,” “My Next Broken Heart” (from that same debut album) and “Red Dirt Road,” the title track from the duo’s 2003 album that resulted in one of the evening’s most passionate audience sing-alongs at Shoreline.
“‘Red Dirt Road’ is my favorite song that Ronnie and I ever wrote together,” said the 69-year-old Brooks, signing off on the crowd’s exuberant reaction to the power ballad.
Although not on the same level as a singer as Dunn, Brooks would also deliver a handful of highlights during the show, including a lovely version of the ballad “You’re Gonna Miss Me When I’m Gone,” which was the sole selection of the night from 1994’s “Waitin’ on Sundown.”
Turning the corner on the midpoint of the set, Brooks & Dunn pushed down on the accelerator as they belted out such party favorites as “Hard Workin’ Man,” “Play Something Country” and “Rock My World (Little Country Girl).”
The highlight of the entire show came with “Believe,” which — with due respect to Brooks and others who might prefer “Red Dirt Road” (or something else) — is the finest song in the duo’s catalog. Dunn put his all into this glorious country-gospel number, leading the congregation of 12,000 as the striking lyrics unfolded:
“I raise my hands, bow my head / I’m findin’ more and more truth in the words written in red / They tell me that there’s more to life than just what I can see”
The group followed up that breathtaking moment with a sweet version of “My Maria” to close the main set, then returned to give the crowd exactly what it wanted — the line-dancing crossover smash “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” — during an encore that also included the patriotic hit “Only in America.”
1. “Brand New Man” 2. “Put a Girl in It” 3. “My Next Broken Heart” 4. “Mama Don’t Get Dressed Up for Nothing” 5. “We’ll Burn That Bridge” 6. “You’re Gonna Miss Me When I’m Gone” 7. “Ain’t Nothing ‘Bout You” 8. “Red Dirt Road” 9. “Lost and Found” 10. “Hard Workin’ Man” 11. “Play Something Country” 12. “Cowgirls Don’t Cry” 13. “She Likes to Get Out of Town” 14. “Neon Moon” 15. “Rock My World (Little Country Girl)” 16. “Believe” 17. “My Maria” Encore: 18. “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” 19. “Only in America”
