Beth Hart (born January 24th, 1972) is an American blues singer, songwriter and multi instrumentalist, hailing from Los Angeles, California.

Any singer of the blues needs to be able to sing from a place of truth in order for their message to be put across in genuine fashion, and that’s certainly the case where Beth Hart’s concerned. In her younger years, her passion for pursuing a career in music was often tempered by a debilitating drug addiction; eventually, though, it would be her love of the blues, fuelled by her difficult experiences, that would win out. In the late nineties, she had her first real hit, ‘LA Song (Out of this Town)’ off of her second studio album, ‘Screamin’ for My Supper’; it went to number one in New Zealand. As it happened, at the time, Hart was starring as Joplin off-Broadway - one listen to the sheer power of her voice makes you understand why she was a natural choice for that role.

In the years since, Hart’s fanbase has steadily grown on both sides of the Atlantic, and her recorded output has included the Danish chart-topper ’37 Days’ in 2007 and its follow-up, 2010’s critically-lauded ‘My California’. She’s also made two records with modern-day blues icon Joe Bonnamassa - a pairing that any blues fan worth their salt will tell you is a match made in heaven. In the UK, Hart’s burgeoning reputation was cemented in 2014, when she performed at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Beth Hart Bares Her Soul To Captivated Eventim Apollo - 08/02/20

The Kris Barras Duo, being Kris and Josiah J Manning one half of The Kris Barras Band, opened proceedings with a half hour acoustic set. Both armed with acoustics but Josiah was also adding bass with his right booted foot and kick drum with his left socked foot.

Band favourites such as Heart On Your Sleeve, What You Get and Vegas Son all worked well acoustically but the duo's version of Midnight Rider was the piece de resistance. Hail Mary brought an excellent set to a close.

A short interval before the lights dimmed and Jon Nichols takes up position alone on stage with his acoustic guitar. Heads turn as Beth Hart's dulcet tones are heard and she suddenly appears at the back of the hall. Graciously moving down the centre aisle, interacting with the audience as she goes, she draws closer to the stage with husband, stage manager and protector Scott Guetzkow close by.

She eventually joins Nichols on stage for There In Your Heart, a gentle opening number before the full band then take up positions, Bill Ransom on drums and Tommy Lilly on bass for Close To My Fire. A band that is very close to Beth's heart as all three members have been with her for most of her twenty five year musical career. She has great trust in them emotionally and professionally.

Beth Hart sings everything from the heart and the great trauma and tragedy of her relatively young 48 years is the inspiration for almost everything she writes. It has not all been doom and gloom, however, and Rub Me For Luck is a heartfelt song with a very moving piano accompaniment that she wrote for her very good friend Joe Bonamassa...... 'Your guitar's a bleeding heart, If you play me like you play that thing,

You'd shine me like a diamond ring.....say no more.

If there is an artist who could add a feminine touch to a Tom Waits classic it would be Hart and it was a bonus that she could accommodate Chocolate Jesus within the set list on this night. This was followed by the excellent Bad Woman Blues before Beth took the band completely by surprise and opted to play a Bobby 'Blue' Bland number I'll Take Care Of You which featured on the covers album Don't Explain that she released with Joe Bonamassa in 2011.

'War In My Mind' (It's All Black In My Soul) the emotionally charged lyric from the title track War In My Mind from Hart's new album pretty much says it all. The rockier Sugar Shack also from her new album follows before the band take their leave and Beth has the stage to herself. Tell Her You Belong To Me was written for her father for whom she loves dearly and his partner who she only wished ill will upon. In fact in the past she would often dream of doing her serious harm. The lyric was strong and was sung with such emotion as she sat on the edge of the stage before taking to the stool behind her piano, totally captivating the audience.

Beth Hart has a voice to die for but what sometimes goes overlooked is her amazing talent as a pianist. It is no small wonder as she was classically trained from four years of age before she started delving into Etta James and even Led Zeppelin. The power of her voice coupled with the intensity of the piano would hold an audience spellbound ad infinitum.

The beautiful Sister Dear was written for one of Hart's sisters who I believe was in the audience on the night and she must have been absolutely blown away. Hart's absolute love for her mother shone brightly when she sang Mama This One's For You and was emotionally broken and in tears at the end. Hart brings this short solo section to a close with Baddest Blues before welcoming back Tommy Lilly who takes up his upright bass for Without Words Get In The Way. Nichols and Ransom join them mid way through with acoustic guitar and single drum/percussion respectively.

This acoustic set up prevailed for the remainder of this fabulous evening. Baby Shot Me Down had a real latin feel to it whilst If I Tell You I Love You a french vibe. Beth Hart demonstrated that there really was no limit to her talents as she joined the rest of her band on acoustic guitar.

Beth again took the band by complete surprise by bringing the main set of this fabulous evening's entertainment to a close with I'd Rather Go Blind before she was rapturously brought back for an encore. Beth Hart returned to her piano for the very dark and haunting Woman Down accompanied by Tommy Lilly on upright bass.

A fabulous evening wherein this tortured sole opened her heart but should be proud of the fact that she can captivate an audience and have them eating from her hand for a full two hours.

The Portland Oregon show was epic! Everything I have been waiting for and more. She hits the stage and all attention is on her, she sings, plays and dances with so much deep down soul crushing emotion. At one point she started a song and suddenly forgot a lyric of that song so she stops and says oh my I forgot the words, she laughs and gathers herself rather quickly then gets right back into it with the band right in time so perfectly. I actually loved the human element of an artist with some of the greatest God givin talents to have a situation like that and still put on such an amazing show. A true professional who is so gifted that its great she has a husband/manager that really sees to her needs and is as supportive as Scott is.This is by far one of my top 3 shows of this year. We bought tickets & told everyone we know about Beth Hart. We also won 2 extra tickets and turned them on to a few friends who had never heard of her before and Beth did what she does best sat down and played and sang her soul out for us all to witness. I even know a guy who teared up during some of her songs and that my friends is quite powerful stuff. Thank you so much for coming to the West coast and specifically Portland Oregon where we really love Beth Hart. Her musicians are exceptional and there is so much to be said about her show but to be honest I was totally mesmerized by her stage presence and amazing voice along with her very tight band. So in the end I had 10 friends who attended this show and every one of them is telling their friends about it and there will be even more of us next time. So please come back to Portland Oregon. I also was blessed to see her in the Kink.FM Bing Lounge about a year and a half ago and thats when I was hooked. Thank you Kink.fm. and see you next time Beth Hart Thank you so much.

“You got places to go, you got people to know, you got plans to get your shit together.” As Beth Hart offered her soul to the audience on Thursday night, I couldn’t help but wonder if she used those lyrics as a mantra during her recovery. The 43-year-old singer-songwriter from Los Angeles, California has written hit singles that have been featured on prime time television shows; she’s performed, recorded, and toured with some of the biggest names in blues. And she’s received a standing ovation from the President of the United States of America. Yet, her life has been marred by tragedy. Substance abuse, the death of a sister, and a bipolar diagnosis are enough to lay waste to the best of intentions, so it wasn’t surprising when Hart’s life followed through on the rest of that chorus, “Did you take it too far, did you forget who you are, did you stash your soul into the closet?” Fortunately, like the woman in the song, Beth Hart pulled it together. The happily married woman on the stage at the Gothic Theatre had recently released an excellent new album, and as she performed selections (life stories) from it, she was surrounded by an amazing backing band (including the drummer who left when she was a mess) and she had a smile on her face. If she was telling the truth about being on oxygen backstage because of the altitude, she wasn’t letting the situation get her down as she celebrated survival with song. - See more at: http://ilistensoyoudonthaveto.com/2015/09/20/beth-hart-gothic-theatre-09-16-15/#sthash.WtGuA9XS.dpuf

The gig at the Royal Concert HallGlasgow,14/2/20 was cancelled allegedly due to illness(a heavy worsening cold)suffered by Beth Hart. The notification was distributed by a paper notice on the door of the venue only 4 hours before event.See cancellation notice that was posted on her official website.

SURPRISINGLY,she was fit enough the following evening to do a live gig(15/2/20)in Newcastle(The Sage,Gateshead) which leaves the question-WHO IS TELLING LIES AND MISLEADING THE PUBLIC WHOM WERE SUPPOSED TO ATTEND THE GIG IN GLASGOW? DISGUSTING ! IF IT WAS A DISPUTE B/T THE PROMOTERS AND THE VENUE THEN, TRADING STANDARDS SHOULD INVESTIGATE !If Beth Hart's management, then their untrustworthiness needs to be repaid by a refusal for anyone from the region(Scotland)to buy tickets for her future gigs here. This would send a clear message of STAY AWAY !

Many people had also booked overnight accomodation to stay over which of itself incurred expense and is unacceptable. There should be recourse of expenses incurred against the promoters/Beth Hart management. No excuses,if she was not well enough to gig on friday night(14/2/20) then unless a miracle had taken place(no chance) NO WAY WAS SHE WELL ENOUGH ON THE FOLLOWING NIGHT saturday(15/2/20)Beth Hart and management take note!DO NOT INSULT PEOPLE'S INTELLIGENCE.You should all be ashamed of your misrepresentations in hiding the truth !!Enough said !

I had been so much looking forward to hearing Beth live, I had built it up so much I was worried it might be an anticipointment but despite this Beth exceeded my expectations and this was the best gig I've been to. I didn't want it to end! We all know that Beth has one of the best voices, musicianship, timing, the works. And so at one with the music, she's extremely spirited! What I wasn't prepared for though was how emotional it was. Beth opened her heart and soul up between songs, and won the crowd over with her honesty, natural energy and was brave enough to just be herself. This directness and honesty shines out of her, and so Beth connects with the audience quite deeply. She bares her soul and is a little bundle of excitement and confidence at the same time. I've never seen anyone who pulls this off so well. You can't help but feel inspired. None of this was I prepared for. Don't ever change Beth you are a breath of fresh air! Personally I can't think of any artists performing today who can top her for musicianship, humbleness and stage presence. One of the best voices in the world. If you have never heard Beth prepare to be captivated. Phenomenal.

A powerful performance from a unique and extremely engaging artist. Beth Harts latest tour of Australia kicked off with a bang in Perth on Thursday night when she reminded an enthusiastic crowd why live music deserves our continued support. Her set comprised a range of new songs and old favourites that showcased her vast talent as a singer, songwriter and musician that had the crowd enthralled from the opening number.

The lady sure knows how to connect with an audience.Apart from the unquestioned talent that was on display it was her relaxed manner and openness that made for a great show. Her ability to switch from whisper quiet mouthings from a seemingly tortured soul to full blown primal cries in song is hugely impressive. Her extremely able three piece band are as tight a group as you could wish to see and priovided her with great support. It seems at times that she is channeling different female and male voices from the pantheon of past legends but make no mistake. Beth Hart is a great talent in her own right and one that should definitely not be missed if she comes to a venue near you.

Wow. Beth Hart at the Carolina Theatre in Durham, NC. A beautifully restored 90 year-old theater was a great meeting for Beth. We've been fans for a while and assumed we'd never get to see her live without some serious travel, so how nice to get a show in our backyard.

Beth transformed a 2000 seat theater into an intimate club setting as she bounced between all the genres she excels in, blues, rock, hard rock, ballads, and gospel. The show pacing was terrific and you got the full scope of her catalog solo piano, acoustic with her band and full-on rock. She's known for playing with some of the best guitarists around and her touring band did not disappoint. In between songs she had the audience laughing, thinking and crying as she laid bare her triumphs and tragedies. It was raw in every sense, it's been awhile since we've seen a performer bring that much emotion to the stage. And despite all the sh*t she's been through, she approached the concert with a genuine sense of purpose and joy—and some amazing vocals. Rock on.

I went to see Beth Hart for the very first time back in 2005. She had just played Pinkpop for the first time and came back to NL for a short tour.

I had listened to her Pinkpop-performance on a small portable radio with bad reception, but knew I had to see this live. And so I did: Oosterpoort Groningen (NL), small venue. I was blown away, and absolutely hooked to that energy.

Since then I've seen her perform over 30 times. Her shows are raw and emotional and full of energy, she tells the best stories while on stage, and always delivers.

She's a total sweetheart too, if you're lucky enough to meet her. Lately she's getting more and more known due to her collaboration with Joe Bonamassa, and I've had the pleasure to see them together in Amsterdam. Brilliant show, worth every cent.

So yeah, go see Beth if you have the chance. It may be a bit expensive these days, but you'll thank yourself afterwards!

I went to 3 of Beths' gigs in 2 weeks in 2020 ... Absolutely brilliant. Easily the best gigs I've ever attended [& I grew up in the industry].

She did really well to bounce back so quickly from being really poorly in Glasgow. It's just as well she looks after herself & knows how to deal with these things. You could tell she didn't feel 100% at the shows following the cancellation, but you had to really look - as she's such a pro. She was still absolutely amazing, not a single duff note [as per] .... But there was a lot of snot hahaha

She's a very clever, honest & open woman. Totally under-rated in My opinion.

My tickets are bought for Autumn 2021 & the hotels are booked. I've a LOT of miles to do & I'm gonna be skint & knackered, but it'll be well worth it.

If you get the chance to see Beth & the boys then please jump at it - you won't regret it

Overwhelming performance of Beth Hart and Band in the Heineken Music Hall - Amsterdam, April 11th 2015.

It was amazing how Beth acted on this big stage. More than sold out, with over 6.000 audience she gave everything, emotionally and musically.

She dared to present old songs and new songs, of the latest cd "Better than Home", and even, for the encores, she sang solopieces, so emotional, it was awesome.

In between she was very confident with the audience and had deep and intimate tales about the songs.

It was a total success. Hope to see and hear more from her in the near future in Holland again.

Interview: Joe Bonamassa and Beth Hart on their new album, Don't Explain

"What a smoking record!" Joe Bonamassa raves on the subject of Don't Explain, the just-released collection of soul covers the guitar star cut with singer Beth Hart. "This is an album I would listen to if I had nothing to do with it. Beth is such an extraordinary talent. Her time is now, I'm convinced of it."

Not surprisingly, Beth Hart returns Bonamassa's sentiments: "One hot disc!" she gushes, letting out a throaty laugh. "I almost can't believe that it's me when I hear it. Really, Joe is that phenomenal. He made me sound good. Every singer needs that kind of support. What he did for me is unbelievable."

What Bonamassa did for Hart, a veteran blues-rock singer with a devoted cult following, was put her front and center in the studio with himself, producer Kevin Shirley and a top-notch gang of musicians that includes Blondie Chaplin on guitar, Carmine Rojas on bass, Anton Fig on drums and Arlan Scheirbaum on keyboards, along with a boatload of ace material made famous by such artists as Etta James, Ray Charles, Brook Benton, Aretha Franklin and Billie Holiday, among others.

"You've got the right singer with the right songs - the rest takes care of itself," says Bonamassa.

"Put a singer in the studio with Joe Bonamassa and Kevin Shirley, you're going to get something good," says Hart.

OK, so it's a love fest, and it's one that MusicRadar jumped right into when we sat down with Bonamassa and Hart recently.

So how did the two of you discover each other?

Joe Bonamassa: "I'm not sure when I first heard about Beth Hart. I do remember seeing her on various TV shows. I think I'd seen her on Conan O'Brien or whatever. And it seemed that whenever we'd tour Europe, our paths would cross. She'd be staying at the same hotel and what have you. Last year, we were both playing the Blue Balls festival - I kid you not! [laughs] - in Lucerne, Switzerland, and she did an hour before us, and man, she knocked me out! It was an unbelievable performance."

Beth Hart: "Joe's very kind."

Bonamassa: "So it was a little while later, I was making the Dust Bowl record with Kevin Shirley in Greece, and I was listening to the expanded edition of The Rolling Stones ' Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out. It had the Ike & Tina Turner tracks on it, and I immediately started thinking about pairing up with a female. And then it hit me: Beth Hart!"

Hart: "I knew of Joe, of course. I was totally familiar with who he is. Then I heard that he was playing a song of mine called 37 Days on a radio show he was broadcasting in England. We were coming to the UK to do some dates, and I planned to meet him there, but for one reason or another it didn't work out."

Bonamassa: "You'd be surprised how much that happens. The best-laid plans…"

Hart: "But later on, we in Dublin at the same time, so we met up in a hotel bar there. I thought he was great, so enthusiastic and so sweet -

Bonamassa: "And I was totally knocked out by Beth. Here's this lady who's acting like I'm the cool one, and meanwhile I'm thinking, Man, she's got it all. She's the new Janis Joplin, Tina Turner - the real deal, you know?"

Pretty nice praise, eh, Beth?

Hart: "Absolutely. See, I couldn't think of all the things to say about Joe. Eric Clapton , BB King, Johnny Winter - Joe's right up there with all of them and so many more."

When did you start talking about doing a record together?

Hart: "Before you knew it, Joe asked me to do an album with him. I immediately said yes, thinking that I'd be singing backgrounds. I had no idea that he was suggesting that I sing lead on the record. [laughs] I was floored, to say the least."

Bonamassa: "The whole thing just seemed very natural to me. I'm always looking for something new to do. I'm going through my iTunes shuffle late at night, and boom! there it hits me. Beth's an outstanding talent, the likes of which we don't get any more. She's the kind of artist I want to work with. So, of course, I was like, 'Let's do something - something real.' I didn't just want her for a backup singer."

How did the record take shape?

Bonamassa: "We made lists of songs. That was the start."

Hart: "Joe, Kevin Shirley and I made lists of our favorite soul songs and artists, we compared them, and we agreed on 12 songs. Well, sort of... [laughs] We ended up recording 10 tracks."

Bonamassa: "We threw a couple of things at her that she hadn't heard before. Hey, that's part of the fun of doing a record like this."

Hart: "I had never heard Bill Withers' For My Friend, but I love his work, so I thought it was a great idea. Well, Well was a song I wasn't in love with, and I didn't know if it would work, but the day I sang it in the studio I totally got it. And now it's one of my favorites."

Vocally, you guys go toe-to-toe on Well, Well in a big way.

Bonamassa: "Thank you. Yeah, sometimes you have to have a little fear to bring something out. I know I experience that all the time."

Hart: "Fear, apprehensive…fear…[laughs] Yeah, sure, whatever works. I just loved singing with Joe on it."

Joe, when it was your turn to do vocals with Beth, did you approach the situation differently than when you sing on your own?

Bonamassa: "I just tried not to get in the way, really. We did the vocals live, and to be honest, I was just concentrating on singing the harmony. I wasn't trying to match her or be her equal; I just wanted to hang in there. Well, Well is my only vocal contribution to the record, and I'm fine with that. Beth doesn't need anybody else."

What about some of the other songs? How did you agree on what to do?

Hart: "All on all, we chose five tracks each to wind up on the record. Another one that Joe and Kevin threw at me was Sinner's Prayer. That was a left curve. It's not that I didn't like it, I just didn't know what I could bring to it. But then I listened to a lot of Ray Charles and I sort of found it - whatever 'it' is. I grabbed onto the center of the track. It's another one of my favorites."

Bonamassa: "Brook Benton's I'll Take Care Of You was another one that Beth wasn't so sure about at first, but she did a great job on it. That one and Well, Well - I've always wanted to do those."

Hart: "I wasn't certain about I'll Take Care Of You. You know, you just have to live with something and see if it hits you. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. I'll Take Care Of You, yeah, I did find myself in that song. I think the reason is…see, there's a personal story in it - in all of these songs. They're sincere. You don't have to relate to all of the words, you just have to relate to the narrative."

Bonamassa: "Picking the material was the hardest thing in making this record, by far. We didn't want to get too rock 'n' roll, but we didn't want to get too light, like we were doing a Rod Stewart standards record. We wanted it to be gritty, but it couldn't infringe on our day jobs. Amped-up versions of soul songs worked."

Like you said, Ike & Tina Turner…

Bonamassa: "Yeah! It had to have that kind of feel. Ike & Tina would do sped-up versions of Beatles songs and stuff like that. We wanted it to feel like we were flying."

Beth, you do a couple of Etta James songs, I'd Rather Go Blind and Something's Got A Hold On Me. What about those ones stuck out to you?

Hart: "That's hard to say. I've been such an Etta James fan since…forever! [laughs] She's my favorite singer of all time. I remember when a friend of mine turned me onto a live recording of hers called Blues In The Night - I was probably 19 or so - and I fell in love with it.

"I don't like all of her records, but Blues In The Night is amazing. I never thought I could do justice to those songs - I'm too white! - but something about this opportunity spoke to me, and I said, 'Give it a try.' And so that's what I did. I've always connected with these songs."

In making this record, what did you guys learn from each other?

Hart: "I really learned what trust was all about. When you work with Joe and Kevin Shirley, they've got their thing down. You don't have to worry about them. You can trust them. Of course, you have to give that trust back. [laughs] They're together, so you have to be together, too. The whole situation is so respectful. I've never seen a working relationship like that before."

Bonamassa: "I feel like I always learn from somebody who can do something better than I can. Beth's one of the greatest singers out there, bar none. She finds a way to live inside whatever she sings. That's what I want to do, whether it's as a singer, a guitar player, whatever. It's not enough to play a song, you have to inhabit it. Beth does that."
