Top things to do in bali, visit a local spa.
Bali is famous for its warm hospitality and services that center around relaxation, inner peace, and comfort. Local spas in Bali embody the island’s culture of wellness with traditional healing practices and serene surroundings. Indulge the senses with a Balinese full body massage, provided with age-old techniques meant to stimulate the flow of “qi”, or energy.
Take a Balinese Cooking Class
Balinese cuisine is defined by fresh ingredients, vibrantly diverse spices, tropical fruits, and traditional variations of rice as a staple with each meal. Take a cooking class to learn how the Balinese cook with flavor and health in mind, utilizing techniques that have existed for millennia. There are many popular vegetarian dishes in Bali, as well as fantastic pork, duck, and seafood dishes that are native to the island and its culture.
Go on a Glass-Bottomed Boat Ride
The biodiverse waters off the shores of Bali are full of incredible species of sea creatures and a glass-bottomed boat ride is one of the best ways to see them. Look out for protected and endangered sea turtles, reef life, and a variety of colorful butterfly fish, clownfish, and angelfish from the clear bottom of a boat as you travel with a guided tour. You could also see a number of other local species. Keep a lookout for sea eagles, and try to spot the brightly-colored beaks of Balinese hornbills as you sail along the shore.
What should I eat in Bali?
Food in Bali is diverse, plentiful, whether you opt for one of the island’s high-class restaurants or fresh street food. Try the many variations of rice and meat wrapped in palm leaves, and a traditional babi guling (suckling pig) before heading back to your ship. Vegetarians will love the fresh Indonesian salad known as gado gado, made with tempeh, bean sprouts, and a peanut sauce.
What's the culture and history of Bali?
As part of a larger Indonesian cultural tradition, the people of Bali share many customs with other islands in the region. They also pride themselves on their own cultural niche; unlike the rest of Indonesia, Bali is a Hindu island, practicing Agama Hindu Dharma. The Balinese have a close relationship with nature and believe that all-natural elements have a symbiotic spiritual and human connection.
Bali has a deep history of imperial, colonial, and independent rule that spans back to prehistoric populations on the island. Bali was ruled for many years by the Javanese Majapahit Empire, and in more recent times, colonized by the Dutch. Indonesia became independent in the middle of the 20th century and Bali is now one of its most famous vacation spots.
Where can I go shopping in Bali?
As an island that’s lured artistic and creative types for decades, Bali offers plenty of shopping opportunities. Shop at the Mertha Segara Samuh Art Market for hand-made souvenirs with bright colored tapestries and Hindu-inspired iconography available at practically any of the market’s stalls. Visit the Bali Collection complex for a more upscale experience, complete with dining and entertainment options to accompany you as you shop. Handmade jewelry, leather purses, natural products, beachwear, sarongs, batiks, and paintings are all great souvenirs of the island.
How can I get around Bali?
The easiest and most convenient way to get around the island on your Bali cruise is by private car or a metered taxi known as a “Bluebird”. Central tourist areas of Benoa such as Nusa Dua are walkable, but in the humidity of the tropics, you may find car transport more comfortable and convenient. If you’re in a group, you can ride with a private minivan (known as Bemo) service, or book larger shuttles and buses to accommodate more people.
What are the local currency and tipping customs?
The local currency in Bali is the Indonesian rupiah, and ATMs are abundant around both the main city center and surrounding beaches. Try to pay with cash when you can, and be careful when using a credit card at smaller stores, as they may not accept them. Tipping is not customary in Benoa, however, tour guides and restaurant workers are always grateful for a polite gratuity.

Cruise Port Guide Bali – Indonesia: dock or tender
At this point there is only 1 option still available for cruise ships to dock and this is at Benoa harbour. Note: this port guide is not for Padangbai or Tanah Ampo.
The port of Benoa is a real tricky one. Larger ships often tender and smaller ships often dock. It could also be your captain will not take the risk to manoeuvre in and chose to go at anchor and tender you to shore. Docked or tendering, you will still go to about the same place in the Benoa harbour. You’ll find a rather large terminal building here with a tourist information centre, exchange office, batik shop, massage corner and outside the taxis and a small market.
Transportation
There are limited options on transportation in the port. Most people would go by shore excursion or taxi and this truly is the best way to go. Most cruise lines do not provide a shuttle bus in Bali, but do check with them if this will be the case for your call in Bali. When there is no shuttle bus available your options are often limited to taxi transport. Taxi transport is the way to go on Bali. Taxis are cheap, the drivers know the way and often they can be a good tour guide as this is what they do for a living.
Taxis at Bali’s cruise port
Please find on the right hand picture the sign you’ll find outside the terminal that list the taxi prices on them. These are the taxi prices of 2018, keep in mind they might change in the mean time, but this will give you an idea of what to expect. Please know that these are not fixed prices you can still negotiate with the driver. Should you wonder if there is a difference in price in port compared to somewhere else on Bali: Yes, there is. Usually if you get a taxi on the street the price for a car and driver for a day is about 500.000 IDR (+/- 40 USD). Keep in mind that these drivers work extremely hard and although it’s a free market and you are allowed to negotiate do not get the price down to much as they still need to make a good living. Most cars are very decent and have A/C.
There are many different possibilities of what to see and where to go. If you just want to go to the beach the editors favorite is Jimbaran beach around the Belmond hotel or in the area of the Four Seasons (a 15 minute drive from the dock). It is not too crowded, white sand, lots of facilities and the most beautiful sunset while the beach transforms into one gigantic fish restaurant. Find more beach options below.
If you are renting a car for a day and you want to see the most inspiring and interesting cultural places of Bali may we suggest the following full day tour by car: Start at the port — 1 hour drive — visit Ubud Monkey Forest — 30 minute drive — Gunung Kawi Monument — 10 minute drive — Tirta Empul temple — 15 minute drive — Bali Pulina — 5 minute drive — late lunch at Bon Bali with a rice terrace view —-1,5 hour drive — Tanah Lot at sunset and catch the fire dance at 06.30 pm — 1 hour drive — back at the ship. This itinerary allows you to see monkeys, old runic temple monument, typical Balinese temple in use, rice terraces, the famous sunset and Balinese dance. The perfect impression!
Public Transport
Yes, there is public transportation available in the port. Whether or not you should use it is up to you. Walk outside the terminal towards the public road, find the bus stop here. They should come by every half an hour and they go to Denpasar. Be really flexible when it comes to public transport. You never quite know where you might or might not end up.
Rent a car or scooter
We wouldn’t recommend anybody driving on Bali themselves. You’ll need an International Drivers License to be able to drive a car, motor or scooter. Unfortunatly the police often knows you probably don’t have one and will take advantage of this situation. Not even to mention you could end up causing an accident which would be anybody’s worse nightmare abroad.
FAQ about Bali cruise destination

Some would say this is the best beach of the island and many would agree. This is not the beach to enjoy the services of a resort, but to enjoy Bali the way the locals do. From the port it is 20 km / 40 min drive to the south.
The “secret” beach
Pandawa beach, Bali
This is the temple that is famous for its sunsets. Join the rest of the island no later than 5.30 pm to see these two temples beautifully back-lit by the sun. Truly one of those experiences where you get mesmerized by Bali. After the sunset you can also join the daily fire dance at 6.30 pm at the temple of Tanah Lot. From the port it is a 28 km / 1 hrs 15 min drive to the north west.
Beraban, Kediri, Tabanan Regency, Bali, Indonesia
This is the tiny beach Padang Padang. Find it in a cove at an approximate 45 minute drive from the port. It is sometimes crowded but definitely worth it if you want to go a bit off the beaten track. There is a quite adventurous staircase to go down to the cliff to reach the beach and on the beach you’ll find a small market, the surfers and all the beach chillers. From the port it is 23 km / 45 min drive to the south west.

If you are interested in the multi rooftops temples this is the one to go to! You’ll find a collection on 10 of the Meru towers. They are typical in Balinese temple architecture. They usually have 3,5,7,9 or 11 roofs and this indicates how sacred the building is. Note: you cannot enter the temple, you can only walk around it and make photo’s like the one above. From the port it is a 30 km / 1 hrs drive to the north.
Taman Ayun temple

Ubud is simply the most charming city of Bali. It is a gem to explore whatever your interests are. It has the famous monkey forest, the small little streets with boutiques, bars and cooking classes. It has the pasar/market for whatever you want to buy and the temples and rice fields are just around the corner. Remember though that if there is ever any furniture or art that you are looking for Ubud is the place to shop! From the port it is a 35 km / 1 hrs 15 min drive to the north.
Kuta Beach is simply the most popular beach around. It is the most commercialized area of Bali and most of it is all based and focused on tourism. You either love it or you hate it. From the port it is 10 km / 20 min drive to the north west.
Kuta beach, Bali
Just over an hours drive from Benoa, to the north of Ubud you’ll find Tegallalang. At this town you’ll find the most breathtaking views over the rice terraces. A little bit north of Tegallalang you simply have to lunch at either Dewa cafe of Bon Bali, they both have delicious Balinese food while you are enjoying a view like this. This is a mandatory photo stop. From port it is 48 km / 1,5 hrs drive to the north.

It might not be the best temple to get acquainted with the temple culture for the fact you cannot enter the temple, but it is known for its importance in the Balinese culture and its dramatic setting on the cliffs on the south of the island. Therefore most people go during sunset. Make sure you’ll be there at 5.30 pm. From the port it is a 25 km / 1 hrs drive to the south west.
Uluwatu temple
Pecatu, South Kuta, Badung Regency, Bali, Indonesia
In the famous artistic Ubud, that is about an hours drive from Benoa, you’ll find Ubud. What used to be famous for woodcarving, paintings and other forms of art is nowadays also on the world map since the Hollywood movie “Eat, pray, love” was shot in Ubud. And let’s not forget the most famous inhabitants of the Monkey Forest that guard the temple complex here. From the port it is 30 km / 1 hrs 15 min drive north.
Ubud Monkey Forest

The elephant cave also known as Goa Gajah near Ubud. See the map above to find it’s exact location. It is an immense temple complex where you can explore the temples that were re-discovered in 1923. Don’t expect too much of what you’ll find in the cave, but enjoy the view while you navigate the stairs going from temple to temple. From the port it is a 35 km / 1 hrs 15 min drive to the north.

This beach is approximately a 15 minute drive from the dock. See the map above for its location. It’s not crowded, not to touristy, it has all the facilities you could wish for and in the evening it transforms into THE beach to eat seafood and to watch the sunset. Because it’s so famous for evening entertainment there is hardly anybody there during the day. Ask your taxi driver for the Belmond hotel or Four Season. Walk onto the beach, pick a bed/chair and enjoy your day!

- A popular area beach is Kuta Beach (which can get crowded). Here you can swim, surf, and parasail, and Bali is a fantastic place for diving. The beer is relatively cheap, and the sunset here is especially spectacular.
- Also in Kuta is the Bali Bomb Memorial, located where old Paddy's Bar used to be. This is a tribute to the 202 people who perished during the Kuta bombings in 2002 and a place for reflection; don't be surprised if a local politely requests you to pay your respects.
- One of the best temples in the area is in Pecatu. In case Uluwatu Temple (Pura Uluwatu) on its own weren't spectacular enough, its location will take your breath away. You can walk the temple grounds at any time, but may be restricted from entering the central courts during certain periods. Keep an eye out for thieving monkeys; you may also have to dress in a sarong and sash to enter the temple, which larger facilities will happily rent to you.
- For another excellent beach, head to Jimbaran Bay with its fine, white sands and calm waters. It's the place to go if you're looking for a quieter experience than in Kuta.

Benoa's recently built seafood restauraunts along the coast allow visitors to pick their fish out of the tank and watch it be cooked, ensuring that they receive the freshest food around. Benoa is a popular spot for windsurfing. Small boats for sailing are also available for rent, allowing travelers to sail at their leisure around the picturesque port. Cruise to Benoa, Bali
Benoa shore excursions, amazing experiences coming soon., sorry, there are no excursions for this port at this moment., things to do in benoa.
View of the Nusa Dua Beach on a sunny day in Bali, Indonesia
The beaches at Nusa Dua are known for being some of Bali's cleanest and most beautiful, as well as its least crowded. Relax in the white sands at Pantai Geger — the water temperatures here are among Bali's warmest. Then, take the boat out to Turtle Island, where you can see the area's cutest aquatic animals in a protected conservation area.
Say Your Prayers
Uluwatu Temple Pura Luhur in Bali, Indonesia
You don't need to be religious to feel divine upon arriving at Uluwatu Temple, a famous oceanside Hindu shrine that's only a short drive from Benoa. Gawk at the scenic views you enjoy from the top, or make friends with the mischievous monkeys who call the temple grounds home.
Learn Local Culture
Speaking of Balinese heritage, stopping in Benoa also puts you in easy reach of the Pasifika Museum with your Bali cruise. Here, you can discover artwork both from renowned local Balinese artists and notable European immigrants, as well as historical artifacts from the greater South Pacific region.
Local Cuisine
Hindu Bali is notable as the only island of an otherwise Muslim Indonesia. That means that pork is served, and Babi Guling — whole roasted pig, Balinese-style — is the traditional preparation. But other great eats aren't far away, either. Try satay, grilled meat skewered and served with an accompanying sauce: Seafood versions like prawns are popular here. Vegetarians can enjoy tofu dishes or sayur mesanten , veggies braised in coconut milk.
Benoa doesn't have a central shopping area, so you'll need to visit the gift shops of local hotels for the best souvenir shopping. Popular choices include Melia Bali and the Goodway Hotel, where you can buy colorful Batik fabric or traditional Balinese incense during your Bali cruise.

Benoa (Denpasar), Bali, Indonesia
Indonesia is made up of more than 13,000 islands, but even with all that competition, Bali manages to stand out. Beautiful temples and shrines of all sizes are spread across the island, tucked down narrow alleyways, hidden within the jungle or serenely presiding over scenic locations, like the dramatic Pura Tanah Lot atop a rock formation just off Bali’s western coast.
Bali is well known for its arts—traditional music and dance, painting, wood and stone carvings, silver jewelry and ikat and batik textiles. The island’s artistic center is the village of Ubud, and its art markets and boutiques carry beautiful Balinese pieces to take home.
When it comes to dining, whether you’re craving a burrito or satay, you can find a restaurant that serves it. Don’t leave the island, however, without sampling Balinese cuisine. Local cooking, which reflects Chinese and Indian influences, uses blends of aromatic spices to season grilled meats (though not beef—Bali is an island of Hindu culture in mostly Muslim Indonesia), fresh seafood, rice and vegetables with delicious results.

Benoa (Denpasar), Bali, Indonesia
Located on the southeastern coast of Bali is the small village of Tanjung Benoa. Still considered a fishing village, Benoa has developed over the past 20 years into a major player in the tourism sector. The calm waters and the beautiful white sand beaches have made Benoa the prime water sport area of Bali. Being a peninsula that is only accessible from one direction, Tanjung Benoa is still relatively quiet with a more relaxed feeling.

In Indonesia eating with your hand (instead of utensils like forks and spoons) is very common. The basic idea is to use four fingers to pack a little ball of rice, which can then be dipped into sauces before you pop it in your mouth by pushing it with your thumb. There's one basic rule of etiquette to observe: Use only your right hand, as the left hand is used to clean yourself in the bathroom. Don't stick either hand into communal serving dishes: instead, use the left hand to serve yourself with utensils and then dig in. Needless to say, it's wise to wash your hands well before and after eating. Eating by hand is frowned on in some "classier" places. If you are provided with cutlery and nobody else around you seems to be doing it, then take the hint.
ATMs are common in any major cities in Indonesia.
Be careful when using credit cards, as cloning and fraud are a major problem in Indonesia. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted, but American Express can be problematic. At smaller operations, surcharges of 2-5% over cash are common.

Tell me about Benoa. Are there beaches or resorts near by? We have 2 days in Bali, docked at Benoa, and for one day I'd just like to go to the beach and/or go snorkeling. Options? What else is in Benoa?

Benoa is just a tiny cruise port - tender port for most cruise lines.
Yo'll need transportation to get to a beach. My recommendation is to book a driver to get most out of your two days including snorkelling - link to reliable driver - contact the driver by email or WhatsApp and plan your days in advance.
I'll be there in a few weeks, but from what I've read, there isn't really anything much in Benoa and around. We have arranged for a driver (in advance) to take us places we want to go. I think it's better to arrange in advance, using someone who has been recommended, since those drivers are more likely to speak good English and have a good idea of what cruisers/visitors would like. They'll meet you at the port or airport. You do not have to hire them for a day (although their day rates are reasonable!) I don't think there's much around Benoa you can do without transportation, so I think most people do a ship's excursion or hire a driver, even if they just want to go one place for the day.
If you're going to be in Bali SOON, you may find the beaches a little disappointing, as in general in Bali there may be grayer days than usual, with some rain each day, but not torrential downpours! Some of the beaches are apparently a little dirtier than usual, too, due to debris coming up onto the beaches. I have 3 days pre-cruise in Bali before boarding a cruise ship Dec. 21. I'm spending the night in Sanur, a beach area about 30-45 minutes from the airport, and then going north to the town of Ubud for sightseeing the rest of the time. While Ubud is probably not doable on a cruise day, there are plenty of other things to do and see from the port of Benoa.
If nothing else, I saw pictures from someone's cruise ship visit to Bali. Apparently there's a big cultural center not terribly far from the port, and a bird or animal park. Sorry, I didn't save the link, but if you plan a day trip with a driver, he should be able to give you some ideas of what you can reasonably see in a day from the port of Benoa. The boards on Trip Advisor may be helpful too - not too many people post here on Cruise Critic, I'm afraid!
As for the port itself, I hear there is a small terminal (we are scheduled to dock, but not sure how many ships dock and how many tender; ours is fairly small). There are supposed to be some vendors in/outside the terminal, and some things to see inside the terminal.
Enjoy! I'm really excited about Bali.......lots of temples, cultural things, etc. I didn't know a thing about it 9 months ago.....so much interests me now!
- 4 weeks later...
I'm nearing the end of my cruise, which started in Bali. We used the driver mentioned above by Hallasm, and he was wonderful. Hiring a driver was definitely a great idea. This one does definitely take cruise passengers around the island, and told me that the Ubud area is about the farthest he can take cruise ship passengers, and if tendering takes a long time, even that may be out of the question. But I would, nevertheless, hire a driver, and now can highly recommend Dewe Gede . His vehicle was very roomy, air conditioned, and comfortable. He was fabulous - spoke great English, showed me good photography angles or places to stand, offered to carry my camera bag, helped me plan wonderful days, and was just an extremely nice man. He's from Ubud but has been all over the island, so can help you decide what you want to do, whether it's just a day on the beach or a day elsewhere.
As for Bali port, our ship was docked, but many ships tender. There were two vendors in the small port terminal when we were there, selling typical touristy items. There are no prices, and you should bargain. There wasn't anything else in the terminal, so if you really want something to carry on like sodas, wine, whatever, get it before you go to the port. There may have been wifi, but I didn't check for it.
Cruising out was kind of interesting - went through a fairly narrow channel where people were doing watersports, etc Airplanes were going right overhead. Then after a while there was nothing.......and a lot of nothing until we reached Australia and our next port!
I didn't see any evidence of cabs being available right there, but there may have been some; not really sure. However, since Bali drivers pay a fee, for every person in the car, not just the driver, to enter the port, I'm thinking that not every driver in Bali flocks to the port on cruise ship days - not exactly an inexpensive thing to do!
I loved Bali, but the heat and humidity were a little daunting. But the other things we feared before arriving, for example, getting sick from food we weren't accustomed to, or getting sick from drinking non-bottled water, turned out to be non-issues. But we WERE careful, and the driver helped us out by taking us places that he thought were good for visitors, and everything was fine.

Bali’s Benoa Cruise Port Ready by Mid-2023
The State News Agency Antara quotes Boy Robyanto, the PT Pelabuhan Indonesia III CEO, saying that the development of the Bali Port of Benoa as a marine tourism hub will be completed by mid-2023.
In a press release made available on 11 September 2021, Boy confirmed the fifth of a sixteen packet development plan was now in hand.
The dredging of shipping channels and harbor basins was the first phase of the port development and was completed in 2019. “The dredging of channels and the harbor basin has been upgraded from 8-meter low water spring (MLWS) to a new depth of minus 12 MLWS – meaning a cruise ship measuring 350 meters in length can now berth at the pier of the Port of Benoa,” said Robyanto.
Meanwhile, the international passenger terminal has been expanded in size from 1,500 square meters with a capacity for 800 passengers to its new size of 5,600 square meters able to handle 3,000 passengers.
PT Pelabuhan Indonesia is also creating facilities to support visiting yachts.
“Work is currently underway to improve the basic infrastructure at the Port’s public facilities. A shopping area for small and medium-sized enterprises within the passenger terminal is 82 percent complete,” said Robyanto. He continued, explaining that the Benoa Marine Tourism Hub (BMTH) concept is putting local genius to the fore in an environmentally conducive manner using Balinese decorative and architectural elements.
Separately, Bali’s Governor Wayan Koster has praised the ongoing development of the BMTH and its embrace of Bali’s culture and innate creativity. Adding: “Tourists arriving via the Port of Benoa must feel they are truly in Bali from the moment of the ship’s arrival. This is important as Bali has very strong cultural values.”
The Governor emphasized the importance of making sure the Port of Benoa results is a facility beneficial to every level of society, including small and medium-sized entrepreneurs. “The people have a right to obtain a benefit from the Port of Benoa. They must be involved. Prepare a place for them within the Port so that when the pandemic is over, they will also advance together with the return of cruise ships to the Island of Bali,” said the Governor.

Where to Stay?
Bali in Indonesia is one of the most fascinating destinations in the world, and it offers a wide range of sights and activities for everyone, from nature lovers to culture buffs, people looking for peace and tranquility, or on the contrary active vacations.
