Private island swimming pigs & sharks exuma

For over 20 years, Powerboat Adventures has been delighting guests from across the globe with the most amazing Exuma Excursion in The Bahamas.

We were the original pioneers of the Exuma tour, and remain the most popular and well received day trip available. Our blend of excitement, natural beauty and impeccable service is unmatched ,

One key to our amazing day is our island, Ship Channel Cay…

No waiting for 30 other boat tours to leave before you can find space to pull up for 10 minutes with the wildlife.

Having our own private place for our guests allowed us to build out the old cottage on the island to provide our bar, dining areas, and a perfect base to hang out in some shade. Throw in sweeping panoramic views of the most amazing water in the world, and we truly do have it all !

The Swimming Pigs, The Stingrays and our Other Friends

And then there’s our wildlife… long before swimming pigs became a ‘thing’, Ship Channel Cay island was home to wild pigs that settled there many, many years before we were on the cay.

They would regularly come down to the beach and nudge a guest for a treat, or just lounge in the sun before cooling off in the water, unphased by the sharks lazily circling close by, or the stingrays gliding up and down the shallow sands.

Today, the swimming pigs on the island are still as friendly, still as cheeky, and still as cute! Our love and respect for the pigs, sharks and stingrays prompted us to ensure all our crew were fully trained in both handling the wildlife and ensuring our guests are kept safe throughout the day.

So come, join us for the experience of a lifetime – you’re in good hands!

Swimming With Pigs in the Bahamas

Swimming pigs of the Bahamas in the Out Islands of the Exuma

Reels of people frolicking with pigs on a beach in the Caribbean have more than likely surfaced on your TikTok and Instagram feeds at one point or another. After all, millions of people partake in this quintessential Bahamas experience each year, and the attraction is so popular that it's been replicated in other destinations.

If swimming with pigs in the Bahamas is on your bucket list, read on to discover the best tour options as well as what to consider when you visit.

Which Bahamas island has swimming pigs?

Located in the Exumas, Big Major Cay – commonly known as Pig Beach – is the original Bahamas island with swimming pigs. It is accessible from several islands in the Bahamas as well as Florida. Most swimming pig tours include other tourist attractions and experiences, including snorkeling in Thunderball Grotto (a filming location for two James Bond movies) and swimming with nurse sharks at Compass Cay.

How to get to Pig Beach from the Exumas

Staniel Cay: Staniel Cay is the closest inhabited island to Big Major Cay. Guests of Staniel Cay Yacht Club can take a short boat ride to Pig Beach via a local charter. 3N's Vacation Services and Staniel Cay Adventures are both reputable companies that offer such options.

Great Exuma: The largest island in the Exumas, Great Exuma houses some of the best resorts in the Bahamas , including the family-friendly Grand Isle Resort & Residences and the adults-only Sandals Emerald Bay . To get to Pig Beach from Great Exuma, it's best to book directly with your hotel. You'll have the option to take a full-day tour (with a roughly two-hour boat ride to the attractions from Great Exuma) or fly to Staniel Cay and take a short boat ride to Big Major Cay from there.

How to get to Pig Beach from Nassau

Pig Beach is reachable from Nassau via plane and/or boat. Below are some of the top-rated swimming pig tours from the Bahamas' capital city:

How to get to Pig Beach from Florida

There are a few reputable companies that offer Pig Beach tours from Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Below is a well-rated option:

Bahamas Air Tours: Miami to Bahamas Day Trip

Price: From $949 per person Duration: 12 hours

This full-day tour starts with private transportation from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. It also includes in-destination transportation to Pig Beach, Guana Cay, Thunderball Grotto, Compass Cay and the sandbars at Staniel Cay. Both alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages are included in the price as well. Recent travelers rave about this experience, with some noting it's the best tour they've ever taken.

Note that passports are required for this day trip, and that while children are permitted on the tour, it's not ideal for young kids. This excursion is also ill-suited for pregnant women, and the tour operator requires a doctor's clearance for expectant mothers. Tours are limited to nine guests (but require a minimum of five participants); private charters are also available.

Is Pig Beach ethical?

Even though the Bahamas limits the number of tour operators allowed to visit Pig Beach per day, there's some controversy surrounding the island and whether or not it's ethical to visit.

In 2017, several pigs were found dead after an influx of tourists left snacks on the beach, causing the pigs to ingest too much sand. Also, travelers can be aggressive with the pigs, often chasing them, picking them up or even trying to ride them.

In recent years, a number of safety measures have been put in place to protect both the pigs and tourists. Per the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, they include the following:

  • A trough provides a designated feeding place for the pigs.
  • Signage communicates rules to tourists, including what you can and cannot feed to the pigs. The pigs are restricted to a diet of fruits and vegetables, such as carrots, grapes, watermelon, apples and lettuce, and many guides supply these items for tourgoers. Some tour guides will provide bread as well, though processed food is not ideal for these animals.
  • A local taskforce of caretakers is on the ground daily to ensure visitors and tour operators are engaging with the pigs responsibly.

While the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism maintains that the attraction is sustainable, know that there aren't any legal limitations protecting the pigs at this time.

How to be a responsible traveler at Pig Beach

All tour guides are expected to share the following protocols with travelers; whether they do or not, it is important to respect these rules for both the safety of the pigs and you:

  • Remain calm at all times.
  • Do not chase, pick up or ride the pigs.
  • Do not engage with the pigs without supervision.
  • Only use approved food from your tour operator, and do not feed the pigs alcohol.
  • If you do not have feed, hold your hands up to show the pigs you do not have anything.

What to pack for your excursion

Pack a beach bag , dry bag or backpack with the following items:

  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • Beach towel
  • Camera and/or phone
  • Waterproof phone pouch with lanyard
  • Change of clothing
  • Windbreaker or light jacket (in case of rain and because it gets chilly on the water)
  • Cash and/or credit card (for tour guide tip and other purchases)

It's best to wear a swimsuit and a cover-up or T-shirt with sandals for the trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are several theories about the origin of the swimming pigs. The most logical is that when the Exumas gained popularity with the rich and famous in the 1980s and '90s, the resident pigs were too smelly to stay and were hence moved to the uninhabited island of Big Major Cay.

It is generally safe provided you're respectful of the animals. However, you should keep in mind that the pigs are known to bite if they're hungry and think you might have food you're not sharing. Because Big Major Cay is their home, they also defecate on the shoreline and in the water.

Most tour operators do not allow children under age 2 on these excursions, and based on our experience, we don't recommend bringing toddlers and young children in general — even if rates are free or discounted for them. Wait until your kids are a bit older.

Swimming with pigs on Big Major Cay – the original Pig Beach in the Bahamas – will cost you several hundred dollars – in part because Big Major Cay is a remote destination only accessible by boat. Of course, it is also pricey because of its popularity. Copycat experiences like swimming with the pigs on Rose Island are cheaper, but less authentic.

  • June 1, 2024

This detailed guide has everything you need to know about swimming with pigs in the Bahamas! From the best locations to insider tips, costs, and the intriguing history behind this unique experience. Plus recommendations for the best tours for a hassle-free experience.

Set off on an amazing water adventure in the beautiful Bahamas—swimming with pigs! Yes, you read that right! Just imagine sparkling blue waters, sunny beaches, and suddenly, you’re meeting these adorable pigs trotting around. Swimming with pigs in the Bahamas has turned into a must-try for people wanting a different and totally cool experience in the Bahamas.

We’ll explore the best locations, transportation & recommended tours, essential tips, costs, and more. I’ll share everything you need to know, making your trip to swim with the Bahamas’ famous pigs an absolute breeze.

Be sure to also check my post on the best luxury resorts in Bahamas if you haven’t booked your stay yet.

First, let’s start by looking into transportation and recommended tours from the 2 most famous starting locations – Exuma and Nassau.

How to swim with pigs from Nassau, Bahamas

Many people choose Nassau and Paradise Island as the place to stay on their Bahamas holiday. If you are among them and want to see the swimming pigs of the Bahamas, worry not. Although the Exumas are a bit further away, there are still ways to easily get there. Moreover, there’s another island with swimming pigs which is just 30min away.

Go check my post on the best excursions in Nassau, Bahamas for more fun things to do in the city. There I have recommendations for ATV and snorkeling excursions, food & rum tasting tours and more!

Traveling From Nassau to Pig Beach by plane

Traveling from Nassau to Piggy Island is a 30-40min flight to Staniel Cay in Exuma, followed by a 10min boat ride to Pig Beach. Undoubtedly, this option is the fastest one, but also the most expensive. An organized excursion from Nassau usually costs 700-800$. What I love about this option are the marvelous views over Exumas and they alone are worth the money.

The benefit of flying is that you’ll be with the pigs earlier in the day, before all the people who come by boat. This means fewer tourists and greater chance for the pigs to interact with you. You can organize everything by yourself by booking flights and then a boat ride. Easier option is to book this organized excursion:

Pig Beach Excursion + Great Guana Cay & Thunderball Grotto

Swimming with pigs in the Bahamas with pigs in the water in Exuma

This pig beach excursion is organized by Staniel Cay Vacations – the most popular pig beach tour provider in the  Bahamas. The excursion is in small groups of maximum 10-15 people per boat. The highlight of the tour is Pig Beach and swimming with the pigs in Exuma.

But that’s not all – there are 7 stops in the tour. Some of them include meeting iguanas or snorkeling at Thunderball Grotto (where a few famous movies were shot). Visit to Compass Cay for a swim with baby sharks is also included!

Local captains ensure an intimate experience away from crowds. Includes transport (and flights), unlimited drinks, lunch, food for the pigs and more.

Please note that you must bring your passport to board the plane ! Don’t miss this unforgettable swimming with pigs in the Bahamas adventure!

Travelling from Nassau to Pig Beach by speed boat

Traveling from Nassau to Pig Beach by speed boat takes 2-3 hours. Quite often the boats make a few stops at other locations before reaching the swimming pigs of the Bahamas.

What I like about the boat trip is the sensation of sea breeze and fresh air as the boat slices through the water. You also get to talk with the other passengers (if you want to) and may create new friendships. Sometimes the captain may stop the boat to show you stingrays or other marine life that you passes by.

Swimming Pigs – 5 Islands Adventure Boat Tour

Swim with the pigs in Pig Beach

During this excursion you’ll stop at 5 islands, each with something special. Be it feeding iguanas at one, check out Pablo Escobar’s sunken plane , or hanging out with nurse sharks . During the trip the tour guide also shares a lot of interesting facts about the Bahamas and the islands being visited.

The tour includes complimentary drinks and water. There’s also a traditional Bahamian lunch with refreshing cocktails at Guana Cay. The highlight is swimming with pigs in the Bahamas at Big Major Cay.

Traveling from Nassau to the swimming pigs in Rose Island

Traveling to the swimming pigs in Rose Island from Nassau offers a more convenient and quicker option compared to the longer journey to Exuma. It’s a shorter boat ride, making it perfect for those seeking piggy encounter without spending extensive hours on a boat. The tours are also usually twice cheaper than the ones to Exuma.

Most excursions to the swimming pigs at Rose Island last around 3-4 hours. This makes them the perfect half-day trip, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the rest of the day. My personal favorite is the fact that you get to spend a few hours on the Pig Beach at Rose Island. While with an excursion to the Exumas’ pigs you’ll usually spend 20-30min on shore.

Rose Island tour and swimming pigs

Swimming pig in Nassau on the beach

Get set for a fun trip with the Nassau swimming with pigs tour! The adventure starts with a scenic tour and a bit of singing, then a short 20-minute boat ride to Rose Island . Once there, you can enjoy the calmness and swim in the clear water.

The highlight is hanging out with the pigs! You can feed them, pet them, and enjoy their company. After pig time, there’s a beach bar for drinks and a free meal . You can also relax on beach chairs or play pool.

This tour includes pick-up and drop-off from your hotel, water to drink, and a lot of amazing moments. Remember to bring cash because some places on the island might not take cards.

Swimming with Pigs in Rose Island

swimming with the pigs in Nassau feeding

This 4-hour tour starts with a 30min boat ride to Rose Island. Along the way you’ll see scenic views over many islands like Paradise & Pearl island, Green cay and more. Once you arrive at Rose Island, you’ll be able to chill at a beach chair or in the dining area.

But in my opinion you’ll be going to enjoy the swimming pigs of the Bahamas first. You’ll be able to pet and feed them, play and take lots of photos. Once you get tired, you can grab a drink at the bar. Optional hotel and cruise port pickup is also available.

How to swim with pigs from Exuma, Bahamas

Exuma is a great place to start your pig-swimming adventure in the Bahamas. Here, you can find Pig Beach on Big Major Cay, where those adorable pigs live & swim around. That’s the location of the original swimming pigs in the Bahamas. Meanwhile the other swimming pigs’ locations in the Bahamas were created on purpose after the success of the original ones.

One of the benefits of swimming with pigs from Exuma is that you can get to Pig Beach very quickly. Thus you’d be spending less time traveling around and more time swimming with the pigs. You’ll also be able to go to the pigs early. On top of all that, Exuma boasts stunning islands and unbelievably clear waters.

Tip: Go to Pig Beach early in the morning, when there are fewer tourists and the swimming pigs of Bahamas will interact with you more.

Traveling from Great Exuma to Pig Beach

If you are staying at Great Exuma, fear not. The island is a bit further away from swimming with the pigs – a 2-hour boat ride. But in my experience most organized tours include many other stops along the way. This makes the journey a lot more enjoyable and interesting and the 2 hours pass by rather quickly.

Great Exuma may not be as close to swimming with pigs in the Bahamas experience as Big Major Cay, I would say it’s better. There are more hotels to stay at and restaurants to dine in. And I also like the beaches more at Great Exuma.

You can organize your swimming with the pigs adventure by yourself or just book this tour and not worry about anything:

Exuma: Swimming with the pigs in the Bahamas tour

Swimming pigs in Pig Beach, Big Major Cay

This 8-hour long excursion includes the best Exuma has to offer. The main attraction is, of course, the swimming pigs in Exuma. You’ll also visit Allen’s Cay to see the iguanas and Compass Cay for some nurse sharks . There are a few other stops including a private pristine beach .

On top of that, throughout the excursion you’ll enjoy light breakfast, authentic Bahamian lunch on-board and snacks . If you don’t have your own snorkeling equipment, the organizers will provide you with one. What I really like about this swim with pigs in the Bahamas tour is that they donate part of proceeds to clean up the ocean .

Traveling from Staniel Cay to Pig Beach

Setting off from Staniel Cay for your swimming with the pigs adventure is a smart choice. In my opinion, if you want to enjoy the experience with just a few other people on Pig Beach, Staniel Cay is your best bet. Pig Beach is just 10min boat ride away!

There’s a range of boat tours regularly departing from Staniel Cay, so you have plenty of options to hop on board and join the fun. However, it’s best if you book your tour in advance, as the boats may be fully booked. The 3N’s Vacation Services tour is organized by one of the most famous companies for swimming with pigs in the Bahamas and is a great option.

Other than an entry point to swimming with pigs in the Bahamas, Staniel Cay has a lot more to offer. Nearby you can explore Thunderball Grotto , a famous cave system featured in James Bond movies . Another option that’s often included in the Pig Beach tours is to snorkel with nurse sharks at Compass Cay.

Where to swim with pigs in the Bahamas

Swimming with pigs in the Bahamas has become a sought-after experience. Nowadays there are many places to swim with pigs, just like the famous original spot in Big Major Cay. Locations like Rose Island near Nassau, Meeks Patch Island in Eleuthera, Ship Channel Cay offer a similar experience.

At these spots, you can meet and play with the pigs in the beautiful waters and stunning island settings. Each place gives you the chance to feed and pet these cute animals, making wonderful memories to cherish. The big benefit of having so many locations is that you can pick the closest one to you and not miss out on the experience.

The original swimming pigs live at Pig Beach on Big Major Cay in Exuma. This place is like a dream with clear blue waters and beautiful sandy beaches. When you arrive, these happy pigs come up to say hello, swimming around and being super friendly. They love when visitors feed them and take pictures.

How to get to Pig Beach:

  • 5-10min boat ride from Staniel Cay, Exuma
  • 2-3 hours speedboat ride from Nassau
  • 30-40min flight to Staniel Cay followed by a 10min boat ride. Often swimming with pigs in the Bahamas tour organizers have airport pickup at Staniel Cay

Rose Island near Nassau

Rose island is located 5miles (8km) away from Nassau. It’s home to many swimming pigs that are eager to interact with the tourists and get some food. When traveling to Rose Island from Nassau, you’ll marvel the beauty of islands like Pearl Island, Gilligan Island, and Green Cay.

At the island there are also beach resort and a bar where you can relax, have a drink or grab some food. There are also sunbeds at the beach that you can usually use as part of your swimming with pigs excursion. Many tours also include lunch or snacks at the bar.

How to get to Rose Island:

  • 30min boat ride from Nassau. People usually book an organized swimming with pigs experience that includes transportation.
The water at Rose Island has a beautiful turquoise color and it’s one of the best spots for snorkeling in the Bahamas. So make sure to do some snorkeling after the fun with the swimming pigs of the Bahamas.

Meeks Patch Island in Eleuthera

Map of swimming pigs in Meeks Patch Island

Eleuthera is famous for its beautiful pink beaches and incredibly clear blue waters. It’s also known for a special bridge called the Glass Window Bridge . It shows two different seas meeting, one calm and blue, the other deep and dark.

Meeks Patch Island is a small island in the northern part of Eleuthera. It’s famous for its swimming animals, most notably the pigs. But there are also ducks and a turkey! It’s not as busy as other places in the Bahamas. Here, you can swim with the pigs in the Bahamas without lots of people around .

How to get to Meeks Patch Island:

  • 1-1.5 hour by boat from Nassau. A great option for that is this Full-Day Eleuthera Adventure: Swimming Pigs & Turtles tour from Nassau
  • 5-10min by boat from Spanish Wells

Ship Channel Cay

Map of Ship Channel Cay with swimming pigs

Ship Channel Cay is a small, 3 miles (5km) by 0.3 miles (500m) island. It’s located 30 miles (50km) south-east of Nassau. Other than swimming with the pigs there’s not much to do on the island.

Sure, you can sunbathe on a beach chair or observe the stingrays or iguanas or watch feeding of the sharks but that’s all. There are a few small buildings on the island offering shade, food & refreshments . What I liked is that there are few tourists and it’s very nice and calm.

How to get to Ship Channel Cay:

  • ~1 hour by boat from Nassau.

No Name Cay, Abaco

Map of No Name Cay and swimming pigs beach

No Name Cay is also a very small island – half the length of Ship Channel Cay. It’s part of Abaco islands and is very close to Green Turtle Cay and Treasure Cay.

As you might expect, there are very few tourists and it’s very calm. Of course, you can feed and swim with the pigs. Other than that, there’s a small souvenir shop and a bar offering drinks and some food.

How to get to No Name Cay:

  • 5-10min boat ride from Treasure Cay or Green Turtle Cay. Tours usually cost 50-60$ per person

Dove Cay, Long Island

Map of Swimming pigs in Dove Cay

Source: Google, Imagery ©2024 Airbus, CNES / Airbus, Landsat / Copernicus, Maxar Technologies, U.S. Geological Survey, Map data ©2024

Dove Cay is the smallest of all the islands where you can go swimming with pigs in the Bahamas. It’s just 0.3 miles (500m) long and only a few pigs live there. It’s a privately owned island and usually you can go there only with a booked tour .

The nice thing is that there are no tourists there and you can have the pigs all to yourself (and the few goats on the island). But bear in mind that the island is rocky and there’s only a small beach . There are no places to get drinks or relax or any kind of buildings other than a shade for the pigs.

How to get to Dove Cay:

  • 5-10min by boat from Stella Maris Marina on Long Island, Bahamas. Tours usually cost 170-200$ per person

How much does it cost to go swimming with pigs in the Bahamas?

Swimming with pigs in the Bahamas can cost from $50 to $400 per person . Prices can change depending on the tour, distance and what’s included. Shorter trips cost less, while longer ones or those with extra activities might be pricier.

It’s important to check what’s covered in the cost, like transport, food, and other activities, to pick the best option for your budget. Prices can also change depending on the time of year, so it’s good to compare different tours before choosing one.

Here are some rough price ranges (per person):

Best time to visit swimming pigs in the Bahamas

little piggie swimming in the Bahamas

The best time to visit the swimming pigs in The Bahamas depends on your preferences. Generally, the pigs can be seen throughout the year. Let’s dive into a few different areas and see the pros and cons of each period.

Peak vs off-season

The best time to visit the swimming pigs in The Bahamas is during the off-peak season. This usually falls between mid-April and mid-December. During these months, you’ll find fewer tourists, lower prices, and more availability on tours.

The peak season, from mid-December to mid-April, draws more crowds and might mean higher prices and busier tours. Pig Beach gets even busier during the Christmas period. But the weather is generally more pleasant during the peak season, with warmer temperatures and less chance of rain.

Morning vs afternoon

Mornings are ideal for a visit, especially in the hotter months. The weather tends to be cooler, and the waters calmer, making it a comfortable experience for both you and the pigs. Plus, early mornings (7AM to 9AM) usually have fewer crowds, giving you a more relaxed time with the pigs.

However, afternoons might offer warmer waters and brighter skies, which could be more appealing if you prefer sunnier conditions. But be cautious that pigs may not be so active and willing to swim with you.

My advice is to avoid going around noon, when many boats with tourists come to Pig Beach.

Sunny vs cloudy weather

While sunny weather can enhance the overall experience with clearer waters and bright light, cloudy weather might offer a unique atmosphere. Clouds can provide a dramatic backdrop for your piggy adventure, creating stunning visuals for your memories.

Moreover, on cloudy days, temperatures might be cooler, making it more comfortable for spending extended periods outdoors. And if it’s really cloudy (and stormy), there might be fewer tourists.

If you want fewer people on your swimming with the pigs in the Bahamas experience, aim for off-season, the mornings or cloudy weather.

What to bring to Piggy Beach

Pig swimming in water in the Bahamas

Heading to Piggy Beach is all about being ready with the right stuff for a fantastic time with the swimming pigs of the Bahamas. Bringing everything that you may need will result in less frustration and worry-free time on the beach.

When you look at the list, many items may seem obvious. But believe me, it’s easy to forget about some of those. Or you may not have thought that you may need this or that.

Water Shoes

These are like protective socks for your feet. They shield them from sharp rocks or rough surfaces underwater, letting you explore without worrying about cuts or discomfort.

Food for the swimming pigs

Ensure you bring pig-friendly treats like veggies or fruits to feed the adorable pigs. Remember, their diet doesn’t include just anything, so prepare treats they’ll love! In my experience, pigs will interact with you only if you have food. Usually tour organizers take care of that, but it’s best to ask them beforehand so that you come prepared.

A no-brainer, but essential! You’ll spend a lot of time in the water. Be it swimming with the pigs, exploring Thunderball Grotto or just snorkeling. So… don’t forget your favorite swimsuit.

The Bahamian sun can be intense and the swimming pigs tours can be long. Quite often the tour boats have limited shade. So it’s best to apply a lot of sunscreen before the tour. Also make sure to bring enough to reapply, especially after spending time in the water. My advice – choose a water-resistant one for uninterrupted fun with the pigs.

Insect repellent

Keep those pesky bugs away with some bug spray. It’s your shield against any unwelcome critters. And there are plenty of those! After all, the swimming pigs are wild animals and often live on uninhabited islands where mosquitos may thrive.

Phone or camera

Capturing those cute piggy moments is a must! Bring a camera or your phone, but be careful with electronics near water. It’s best if you have an action camera (e.g. GoPro) or waterproof shielding. My best advice – don’t forget to fully charge it beforehand or bring a power bank!

Waterproof phone case

Protect your phone or camera from water splashes and accidental drops. It’s a smart investment to safeguard your devices. Even though many phones from the last few years are waterproof, you never know what may happen. Moreover, the salt water is corrosive and can damage your phone. Meanwhile waterproof cases or pouches are cheap and do a great job!

Towel & clothes

After your swim, you’ll need something dry to change into. Pack a towel and an extra set of clothes for a comfortable post-swim experience. If you have a waterproof bag (or one that doesn’t absorb water), bring it along and store your items there. During the boat trip there may be a lot of splashes and water drops.

And if the weather forecast is not sunny, get a rain jacket in case you get caught up in a rain. It will also keep you warm if it’s windy.

Cash & Card

Many places and islands that the tours stop at may not accept cards. So make sure you bring cash for any purchases or emergencies. For example, you may have lunch included in your tour, but without the drinks or alcohol. You’ll also need some cash for tipping your tour guide. In my opinion it’s best if you get smaller bills. Usually 50-100$ should be enough.

Enhance your underwater vision with goggles. They’ll allow you to explore the beauty beneath the surface when snorkeling or taking underwater photos.

Usually tour organizers will provide you with snorkeling equipment, but ask beforehand. On the other hand I prefer using my own goggles and snorkel, so I always bring mine.

No expensive jewelry

You’ll be spending half or the whole day on the boat, at the beach and in the water. Thus there’s a high chance for you to lose your jewelry.

My advice is to leave those at the hotel. Not only for your swimming with pigs in the Bahamas adventure, but for any other excursion that involves activities like swimming, snorkeling and bumpy travel.

How to swim with the pigs in the Bahamas

Pig sleeping on beach Bahamas

Embarking on an adventure to swim with the pigs in the Bahamas is an experience like no other, but it’s essential to maintain a respectful and considerate approach. This will guarantee the best experience for you and the pigs. Moreover, if you do these simple things, you’ll reduce the chance of injuries or getting bitten.

My grandparents had a farm with lots of animals – pigs among them. Thus I had a lot of interaction with them and know how to behave around the swimming pigs. But many tourists don’t. So, follow these guidelines for an enjoyable and safe interaction with these fascinating creatures:

Be respectful

Approach the pigs calmly and avoid making sudden movements or loud noises. Let them come to you if they feel comfortable. Don’t chase them or let alone – ride them. Be kind and remember that they are wild animals and may do unpredictable things.

Don’t hold the piggies

Picking up or carrying the pigs isn’t a good idea. They prefer to move around freely on the sand or in the water. And if you pick up a cute little pig, it may squeal. This can draw the moma-pig’s attention and she may try to protect her little one.

If you want to hold a swimming pig in the Bahamas, only do so if the piggie is really friendly and enjoys your company.

Don’t feed the pigs from your hands

Feeding the pigs directly from your hands might seem appealing, but it’s crucial to avoid this. Their eyesight and coordination are not very good. So they may mistake your fingers for food and try to bite them.

The same applies for any other object that you hold in your hands – like a phone. So keep those objects either in your bag or in front and above the pig’s head, where they can see them.

Feed the pigs only in the Water

To maintain the pigs’ natural habitat and cleanliness, feed them while in the water. But more importantly – do it for the pigs’ safety. If you throw food on the beach, they may ingest too much sand. But sand is not good for them. In the past there were cases where some of the swimming pigs in the Bahamas died because of the sand .

It’s best if you throw the food in the water in front of the pigs when they swim towards you.

Feed the pigs with approved foods

Stick to the food provided by the tour guides or locals. Fruits and vegetables are typically safe and enjoyable for the pigs.

Avoid feeding them any inappropriate or harmful items. It goes without saying that they don’t like processed foods. So, please, don’t feed them with chocolate bars, sweets, crackers etc.

Don’t turn your back on the pigs

Always be aware of the pigs’ location. Turning your back might startle them or lead to unexpected encounters. Maintain a watchful eye while enjoying your time in the water.

Take a lot of photos

Capture these incredible moments! Ensure your camera or phone is waterproof and take plenty of photos to preserve the memories of your unique adventure.

What to expect on your swimming with the pigs excursion

When you’re geared up for swimming with the pigs in the Bahamas, here’s what you might encounter during your visit:

Short stay to swim with the pigs in the Bahamas

Many tours for swimming with pigs in the Bahamas say they are 4 or more hours. But don’t expect that you’ll spend most of the time with the pigs. Usually you’ll stay at Pig Beach for 20-40min. It may not seem much, but it’s more than enough for feeding and playing with the pigs. And for photos, of course.

The rest of the excursion time is spent traveling and stopping at other destinations. To be honest, I really loved the whole experience. You spend some time with the pigs, you snorkel at Thunderball Grotto, pet some iguanas. I think that the organized tours are really worth it.

Pigs may not swim during your visit

These charming creatures might not always feel like taking a dip. Don’t be disheartened if they prefer lounging on the shore rather than paddling in the water. They are living beings like us. So they may not always be in the mood. There are higher chances to see the pigs swimming if you go to Pig Beach in the morning.

Many other tourists

Pig Beach is a famous spot, attracting a lot of visitors keen on experiencing this unique adventure. More than 7 million come to the Bahamas every year. Most of them want to see the famous swimming pigs in the Bahamas. Therefore, be prepared for crowds and plenty of other tourists wanting to meet the pigs.

Cute piglets… and large hogs

Get ready to meet adorable piglets and larger pigs, each with its own personality. Some might be more playful, while others enjoy lounging in the sun. Just be prepared that not all pigs are small and cute. Some are enormous hogs that just like sleeping and eating all day.

Poo in the water

It’s essential to be aware that the pigs live on the beach, so there might be feces in the water. This is part of their natural habitat, so don’t be surprised.

Just walk around the poo and try not to swallow the ocean water near pig beach. Also don’t forget to wash your hands or use disinfectant before touching your food.

History of swimming with pigs in the Bahamas

Swimming with pigs in the Bahamas

The captivating history of swimming with pigs in Exuma stretches back decades. It’s said that the pigs arrived on Big Major Cay (Pig Beach) during the late 20th century. The exact origin remains a delightful mystery, with colorful local legends adding to the allure.

Some stories claim that sailors brought the pigs ashore, intending to return and cook them but never did. Others suggest that the pigs were survivors of a shipwreck and found their way to the island. But the most widely believed story behind the swimming pigs in the Bahamas is not so exciting.

In the 1990s two farmers were raising pigs on Staniel Cay. But the unpleasant smell coming from the pigs quickly spread throughout the small island. People were not happy with that. Thus, the farmers had to find a solution quickly.

What they came up with is to move the pigs to Big Major Cay. It’s far enough from Staniel Cay so you can’t smell them. At the same time it’s very close so that they can tend to the piggies. As time passed by, the pigs started associating the incoming boat with food. Thus, they would swim towards it to get food sooner.

Over time, these pigs adapted to their beautiful beach habitat and became friendly with visitors. The phenomenon gained global attention through social media, transforming this humble island into a sought-after destination for those seeking an extraordinary animal encounter.

Where to Swim with Pigs in the Bahamas

1 – pig beach.

Big Major Cay, ‘the original Pig Beach’, is an island inhabited only by pigs located around 82 mi southeast of Nassau, and 50 mi northwest of George Town, Exuma’s capital.

Pig Beach is the best place to see the swimming pigs in the Bahamas. There are about 20 pigs and piglets, of all sizes and colours, roaming freely around this stunning island with powdery white and breathtaking crystal-clear turquoise water.

To get to Pig Beach from Nassau you can either book a full-day Pig Beach Tour by powerboat or with flight included. By powerboat, you will spend US$ 439 if you book this tour , or US$ 467 if you opt for this one . By plane will cost you approximately US$ 783 if you book this one , or US$ 750 if you choose this one .

If time and money aren’t a problem for you, my recommendation is to go to Pig Beach. This was what I did, and I loved it.

Sailing along the crystalline water with different shades of blue of Exuma Cays is an unforgettable experience. Apart from swimming with pigs, you will also get the chance to pet sharks, feed iguanas and snorkel at Thunderball Grotto, where two James Bon movies were filmed.

2 – Pear Island

The closest island to Nassau where you can swim with pigs is Pear Island, also known as Sun Cay.

This a private sun-drenched paradise surrounded by sparkling turquoise water with four bars, an array of lounge chairs and hammocks is located on Nassau’s northern coast, only 4.6 mi from Cruise Port Terminal.

When booking this half-day tour to swim with the pigs on Pear Island, you will interact with the pigs for around 40 minutes, unwinding and lounging in the sun on powdery white-sand beaches and taking a dip in the azure-blue waters.

The tour costs US$ 143 with lunch included. If you want to do water activities and feed iguanas you can pay extra on the day.

If you are an adventurous person, you can book this tour with lunch & kayaking included for US$ 189 or this Jet Ski Tour for US$ 225. And if you are travelling with kids, this Half-Day Guided Cay Cruise, Sea Life Watch & Snorkel for US$ 299 is a great option.

3 – Rose Island

Rose Island is a small, elongated island in the Bahamas that lies approximately 5 km (3 mi) east of New Providence Island (where Nassau is located).

This unmatched private island destination, just a 25-minute boat ride from Nassau, with no roads, infrastructure, and permanent residents, offers daily visitors a dreamy island escape.

To go swimming with pigs on Rose Island, you need to book a tour from Nassau or Paradise Island . The half-day tours cost between US$ 175 and US$ 252.

You will travel by speed boat and explore different islands off the coast of Nassau. You will snorkel among Pear Island’s rich marine life, walk along turquoise beaches and discover the turtles on Green Cay. Not to mention swimming with pigs on Rose Island.

Below are some of the tours that I recommend. They all offer free cancellation, and you can reserve now and pay later.

Eleuthera is a long, thin island in the Bahamas archipelago known for its famous pink sand beaches.

This Bahamian Island is located approximately 230 mi east of the southern tip of Florida and 50 mi east of Nassau. It is another place where to swim with pigs in the Bahamas.

When booking a Full-day Eleuthera Adventure with Swimming Pigs Tours by powerboat from Nassau, you will feed and swim with Eleuthera’s pigs, visit Spanish Wells, a beautiful and quaint fishing village, pet wild-sea turtles, and snorkel on the vivid coral reefs of Rose Island.

The tour costs approximately US$ 350 with snacks, lunch, water and alcoholic beverages included.

5 – Abaco

The Abaco Islands is a 120-mile-long chain of islands in the northern Bahamas, located about 193 miles east of Miami, Florida.

The swimming pigs of Abaco may not be as famous as their long-lost relatives on the Exumas, but they also live in a piece of paradise called No Name Cay (a.k.a. “Piggyville”), a small island just south of Green Turtle Cay.

This isn’t where to swim with pigs if you’re vacationing in Nassau or Paradise Island. However, if you’re planning a trip to the Abaco Islands, it’s a great option.

Brendal’s Dive Center & Water Sports , located on Green Turtle Cay, offers three different swimming pigs group tours. Two half-day tours (one only to No Name Cay for US$ 55 and the other to Mun Jac Cay Lagoon, where you can hand feed the Rays, and No Name Cay for US$ 125). The full-day tour with tree activities costs US$ 165.

6 – Freeport

If you’re wondering where to swim with pigs if you’re in the Grand Bahama Island or Fort Lauderdale, Freeport is the place to go.

The second-largest city in the country and the main city on Grand Bahama, an island in the northwest Bahamas just 80 mi off the Florida coast, is known for the oceanfront Lucaya district, which features developed beaches, resorts, shopping, golf courses and many casinos.

When booking a half-day Freeport Swimming Pigs Experience , you can splash in the Caribbean Sea with wild pigs and soak up the gorgeous scenery of Crystal Beach. You will also travel through Freeport into the old village of West End to enjoy picturesque coral reefs and a turquoise sea filled with tropical marine life.

The tour costs US$ 90. Drinks and lunch are not included.

If you’re in Fort Lauderdale, you can book this 3-hour ferry or this tour . But the reviews aren’t good for both of them though.

7 – Treasure Island

This option is only available to cruise ship passengers because it’s a shore excursion.

If you cruising with Norwegian Cruise Line to Great Stirrup Cay or with Royal Caribbean to Coco Cay, you can book a swimming with pig tours with Bahamas Treasure Island .

The island is located very close to these two private cays and they will pick you up and drop you off at your vessel.

Currently, there are 43 pigs and some of them were brought from a slaughterhouse in Nassau. They have paddock areas located above the beach with fresh water, plenty of shade, a farrowing area and of course food. They happily engage with the tour attendees.

I always recommend that you buy travel insurance! It can literally be your lifeline if something happens to you , or your luggage is lost or stolen.

Everything You Need to Know About the Bahamas' Beach Pigs

Nina Ruggiero is Travel + Leisure's senior editorial director and the co-founder of Be A Travel Writer , an online course for aspiring travel journalists. A New Yorker based in Los Angeles, she has a special interest in beach destinations, outdoor adventures, unique hotels, pet-friendly travel with her golden retriever, @travelswithcali, and all things Italy.

bahamas trip to swim with pigs

Where are the swimming pigs?

How do you get to pig beach, how did the pigs end up at the beach, can you feed the pigs, when is the best time to visit them, how do you get to the exumas, where should you stay, what other animals can you meet.

Step onto the white-sand beaches of the Exumas — a chain of more than 365 tiny Bahamian islands and sleepy cays — and you'll be struck with the feeling that you're the first to discover this remarkable corner of the planet.

Here it's iguana tails, not human footprints, that leave marks in the sand, and stumbling upon a gleaming pink conch shell the size of your head is as common as having a new shade of blue catch your eye each time you survey the surrounding waters.

But as your boat approaches Big Major Cay, you're awoken from this daydream by some rather boorish inhabitants: loud, snorting pigs paddling out to greet you like a jolly bunch of golden retrievers rushing to the door when their owner finally gets home from a long day of work.

The Bahamas' beach pigs are transplants rather than native islanders, just like many of the people you'll meet in the area. And though they've clearly taken to their tropical digs and rising popularity — spurred in part by a dramatic appearance on "The Bachelor" and more than a few well-liked Instagram posts — the rewards of fame (read: free food) have come at a cost.

At least seven pigs were found dead in February, and while many reports speculated booze-wielding tourists did them in, government officials blamed sand ingestion after receiving autopsy results.

Since human visitors have become a fixture on the island, the pigs have mostly abandoned foraging in the forest in favor of eating the food that's thrown to them from boats and on the shore. Swallowing sand amidst the feeding frenzies, coupled with a dry January that depleted their already limited supply of fresh drinking water, was likely the true cause of death, a Humane Society inspector told National Geographic . Healthy pigs have been brought in to replace their fallen comrades, and the friendly sunbathers are still splashing their way onto the bucket lists of animal-loving travelers everywhere.

Here's what we learned on a visit to Pig Beach in the Bahamas , including how to get there, what to expect, where to stay, and, of course, how to responsibly interact with the animals.

The Bahamas' beach pigs live on Big Major Cay, one of the over 365 islands in Exuma, a district of the Bahamas. Also known as Pig Beach (for obvious reasons), the island is about 82 miles southeast of Nassau, and about 50 miles northwest of George Town. It is entirely uninhabited by humans.

The only way to reach Pig Beach is by boat, so you'll either have to charter one or take a guided tour.

A popular tour company in the area is Exuma Water Tours , which offers a full-day tour that includes visiting the pigs, swimming with nurse sharks, meeting iguanas, a sandbar picnic, and snorkeling in the famous Thunderball Grotto (a scenic spot that has been in two James Bond films), for $240 per adult.

If you're willing to venture out on your own, you can rent a boat from exumavacation.com for as little as $275 for a full day (or include a guide for an additional fee).

You may also want to weigh your options with your hotel. At nearby Fowl Cay Resort , daily boat rentals in the price of your stay (as is an orientation for novice skippers).

Even for their neighbors, the swimming pigs are shrouded in mystery. Local legends abound, from a tale about a shipwreck to one about hungry pirates who dropped them off and never made it back for their meal. But a man named Wayde Nixon claims to have brought the first pigs to the island with his business partner, Don Rolle, in hopes of starting up a pig farm in the late 1990s. Nixon told the Today show he was preparing a sustainable food supply in case of the feared Y2K computer meltdown. If his story is true, the pigs may have been even more relieved than we were when screens didn't go dark on New Year's Day 2000.

You can give the Bahamas' beach pigs food for now, though V. Alfred Gray, minister of agriculture and marine resources, told the Nassau Guardian rules would be put in place after tourists were eyed in the pigs' untimely deaths. Nixon and Rolle also said in February that they were working with the government on new regulations.

Meanwhile, the deaths are a solemn reminder to think before you feed. If you do feed the pigs, limit the snacks to pitted fruits and vegetables, and feed them in the water instead of in the sand to avoid more sand ingestion. A good alternative to food would be attempting to feed them fresh water, as their supply on the island is limited.

Another thing to note is that the pigs will chase you if you're carrying food, and some are quite large, so if you scare easily, you might want to roam the beach food-free.

Most tours to the island run between 9 a.m. and sunset, a local guide told Travel + Leisure , so if you're taking your own boat, go early in the morning for the most uninterrupted attention from the pigs. By late afternoon, you'll usually find them tuckered out with full bellies, and they're more likely to lounge in the sand than to paddle through the water with you.

You can visit any time of year, but know that June through November is considered hurricane season , and when a dangerous storm is coming, the pigs are usually taken to shelter by a local water sports company.

If Pig Beach is your destination of choice, you're best off flying into the tiny airports on Staniel Cay, Black Point, or Farmer's Cay.

Maker s Air offers per seat fares starting around $369 one-way with hassle-free, private jet amenities — like skipping security lines, relaxing in a quiet lounge with snacks and beverages pre-flight, and flying in a nine-seat plane — from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport to Staniel Cay. (But yes, you do need a passport .)

You can also take a major U.S. carrier to Nassau and then fly FlamingoAir to any of the above destinations daily, with rates starting around $110 one-way. Daily tours to Pig Beach are offered from Nassau and Great Exuma by boat, but it will take an entire day with a lot of travel time.

For a romantic, secluded getaway or an unforgettable group vacation, Fowl Cay Resort sits on its own private little island minutes from Pig Beach. The resort's waterfront villas offer stunning views and top notch amenities (think seaside rocking chairs, private paths to secluded beaches, and stocked pantries), but the real appeal is the authentically low-key island vibe that encompasses the grounds, from the friendly staff to the regular visitors mingling over cocktails and karaoke. Villas start at $1,657 per night including all meals, drinks, airport transfers by private boat, and daily bicycle and boat rentals. If you can't swing a few nights in a villa, stop by the Hill House restaurant for a sunset cocktail and fresh seafood dishes sourced from local waters.

Nearby Staniel Cay (the most accessible option due to its airport), is also minutes from the pigs. There are a few different accommodation options available, the most popular of which is the Staniel Cay Yacht Club's private bungalows . The colorful retreats are perched above the marina, steps from the yacht club's lively yet relaxed beach bar, one of Jimmy Buffett's favorites. If you'd rather feel like a local (and save some cash), stay at the Isles Inn , located above the Isles General Store, where rates start at $150 a night and come with free use of a golf cart, the island's preferred mode of transportation.

They might be the most famous, but the Bahamas' beach pigs are far from the only animals you can get up close and personal with in the area. Compass Cay is home to nurse sharks just waiting to swim with daring humans, and Bitter Guana Cay is home to the endangered Exuma Island iguanas, though you'll feel like there are plenty of them when they coming running towards you across the sand.

Cocoplum Beach is known for its sand dollars, which often become easy to spot on its sand bars during low tide. You can swim with sea turtles and feed them conch at Farmer's Cay , and snorkel with an array of fish at some world-class spots, including the Thunderball Grotto and The Aquarium .

How to Swim With Pigs in the Bahamas

Getting to Pig Beach and Visiting With the Swine Responsibly

 TripSavvy / Lauren Breedlove

There's a little island in the Exumas, Bahamas , that is home to no humans but more than a dozen pigs and piglets who can be seen swimming around in the crystal-clear seas. Pig Beach has beckoned many a tourist, including some of the cast of "The Bachelor."

Nobody knows exactly how long the little oinkers have inhabited the island (more than a decade, it seems), but they’ve since become the local celebrities. While they seem like friendly company, tourists should visit Pig Beach responsibly so as to preserve these adorable, jovial creatures and keep them healthy.

Getting to Pig Beach

Pig Beach is the southernmost beach on Big Major Cay in the Exuma Cays , a 120-mile archipelago located southeast of Nassau in the Bahamas. With 365 islets, there is literally a cay for every day of the year. The Exuma Cays are among the most pristine Bahamian islands and it’s easy to see why A-listers like Johnny Depp and Richard Branson retreat here.

The only way to get to Pig Beach is by boat, so tourists will either have to charter one themselves or book an excursion. Four C’s Adventures is a popular tour group that has a full-day offering. Whichever company you choose, make sure the tour group is practicing sustainable and ethical values. Tourism in the area has become so popular that the safety and health of the pigs has been compromised by it.

How to Visit Responsibly

Seven of the 20-ish pigs on the island died abruptly in 2017. At first, alcohol was the believed culprit, but an autopsy revealed that the swine died from sand ingestion. Many tours include feedings as part of their excursions—and the pigs rely on these feedings now instead of finding their own food sources—but it's up to tourists to handle these feedings responsibly.

No matter what the tour groups give you to feed them, only feed the pigs pitted fruits and vegetables. Giving them fresh water is an even better idea because water on the island is limited. To prevent them from swallowing too much sand, be sure to feed them while they're in the water, not on the beach.

Where to Stay

There is nowhere to stay on Pig Beach, specifically, but many nearby resorts and hotels offer excursions and boat rentals, themselves. On Great Exuma, the Grand Isle Resort's three-day True Exuma Experience package includes villa accommodations, daily breakfast, and a half-day excursion to Pig Beach. On Staniel Cay, the colorful Staniel Cay Yacht Club can arrange excursions, too.

Similarly, you can charter your own boat from the Fowl Cay Resort, minutes away from Pig Beach, and it's actually included in the price of your stay. A more budget-friendly option is Isles Inn (which gives you access to a golf cart for getting around the island), but you would have to purchase Pig Island excursions in addition to your accommodation.

What to Expect If You Book a Swimming With Pigs Tour in the Bahamas

Unknown-5

Travelers are attracted to the Bahamas for a number of reasons, like the archipelago's electric-blue waters and close proximity to the eastern coast of the US, or the staggering new Baha Mar resort complex in Nassau. For some, though, it's the pigs.

In the Exumas (a region of the Bahamas composed of some 365 islands and cays), there is a stretch of sand known as Big Major Cay, and it's uninhabited save for a population of feral pigs. One of the most popular attractions in the entire Caribbean nation, swimming with these photogenic swine is no simple side trip. Even travelers based in the Exumas need to devote at least one full day to see the Bahamian swimming pigs. And this is just one key thing to know before booking a tour to Big Major Cay.

Getting there

Because I was based at the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar in Nassau, I caught one of the early-morning flights to George Town (GGT), the capital of the Exumas, the day of my tour. It was a 40-minute puddle jump from Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS) on a Bahamasair twin turboprop. My flight left promptly at 8:40am and landed at 9:20am. It was like the tour had already begun, thanks to the stunning views below.

bahamas trip to swim with pigs

More untamed than the expertly manicured island I had been staying on, George Town (on Great Exuma) felt almost primitive when I stepped onto the tarmac. Less than 25 yards away on the other side of a chainlink fence, Jedi (pronounced Jeh-dee), the boat captain from Coastline Adventures , was right where he said he would be, wearing a bright orange shirt. I climbed into his air-conditioned bus along with a handful of other passengers, and we set off to pick up the remaining guests, who were staying at hotels on Great Exuma.

I stepped onto the wooden dock and joined the single-file line to drop my sandals into a bucket while boarding the 35-foot Marlin. I claimed my seat up front, where I had an unobstructed view, slathered on sunscreen and watched as Jedi and his first mate, Liz, revved up the engine and pulled us away from the dock.

Sandbar snack break

We dropped anchor at the stunning Pipe Cay sandbar that looked and felt like a shallow pile of talcum powder. Lemon shark pups swam close to my feet.

Jedi stepped off the boat and pounded a number of conch he'd caught with a mallet, revealing briny, white meat. Liz added the chopped conch to diced peppers, onions and a touch of mango for sweetness, and the group dug into bowls of the resultant conch salad.

Swimming with nurse sharks

It was already well into the afternoon by the time we reached our next stop on the tour, Compass Cay, a busy marina where dozens of nurse sharks swarmed beneath a marina. A mandatory $10 docking fee was required the minute you stepped off the boat, whether you swam or not. It wasn't included in the tour price, and you needed cash.

I found a spot to sit on the edge of the dock and dangled my feet over the edge — as close as I'm ever going to get to full-grown sharks of any kind. Several other travelers jumped in, the first a woman on our tour with a GoPro in her hand. Before she'd even let go of the dock steps, a shark had already snatched the camera from her hand, nipping her finger in the process. Everyone yelped in shock, and Liz quickly wrapped the woman's finger with a bandage. Most of the guests jumped back in the water, and someone found the camera at the bottom of the marina.

Other boats pulled up, and in a matter of minutes there were roughly 25 tourists crowded together in the 4-foot-deep water, bobbing alongside the sharks. Everyone was snapping selfies and feeding the sharks fish scraps handed out on the dock.

One tour member began pulling sharks out of the water for a photo op, and I couldn't help but cringe. There is something about interacting with the sharks in this way — even passively swimming with them — that feels unsettling, like we've commercialized these wild animals in pursuit of a great picture.

bahamas trip to swim with pigs

Part of what struck me was that neither the dockmaster nor the tour guides ever offered visitors guidance on how to behave in the water. Save for a few signs warning guests not to feed the sharks anything but fish scraps, no one seemed to care what anyone did once they were in the water.

I later read a story claiming the marina owner brought them in years ago . Nurse sharks are considered one of the most docile species of shark, so it didn't take long for the unaggressive animals to begin luring travelers. (The sharks are even named.) As daytrippers have become more aggressive, though, the animals, too, seem to be acting out in response.

Playing with pigs

Finally, it was time to swim with the pigs. When we dropped anchor in the shallows of Big Major Cay, it was way past lunchtime, and most of the pigs were passed out under a thatched hut on the beach. One huge male swam toward our boat immediately, though, its round, pink snout rising out of the water like a periscope. He was quickly banging himself against the side of our boat, demanding to be fed.

"Hold out your hands to show them you don't have any food, and they'll retreat," Jedi said.

bahamas trip to swim with pigs

Liz also warned us not to turn our backs on any of them: Some are feisty enough to bite your behind if they think you're not feeding them.

There are a few different legends about how the feral pigs first arrived on this uninhabited island, but most point to human intervention, whether you believe it was pirates, Spaniards or a businessman who dropped them off in the 1990s . It wasn't long before the island earned its reputation as the "authentic" home of Pig Beach and boat tours started coming in droves.

On the day we visited, we barely stayed at Big Major Cay for 15 minutes before it was time to move on. It was disappointing, but, truthfully, once you've taken a round or two of obligatory photographs and fed the swine a few scraps of bread, there's not much else to do. After all, who wants to hang out longer than necessary in the same water where feral pigs are freely pooping and peeing? Let's put it this way: A lot of the marketing materials depict happy children snorkeling with swimming piglets. I can't imagine anyone sticking their face in that cloudy water.

bahamas trip to swim with pigs

During my trip, I saw a grown man straddle a large pig as if to ride him and tourists hold a squealing piglet for photos. I asked Jedi about official guidelines on how to interact with the pigs, but he shrugged and said there were none that he knew of.

Last year, several pigs were found dead at this beach, their bellies filled with sand. Some critics believe the pigs ingest too much sand during feedings with humans, causing them to get sick, but no other deaths have been reported since. The changing climate may also be to blame (it was discovered that their fresh water source had dried up).

According to the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, the number of tour operators that can visit the cay per day is limited, and the pigs are on a "restricted" diet. "Visitors," the ministry explained, "should use their best judgement when interacting with pigs."

After the tour, I spoke with the manager of Coastline Adventures, Glenroy Smith, who told me explicitly that it's not recommended to "handle the animals" and travelers are "[advised to use caution] when touching or picking them up."

Bahamian buffet

Around 3:00pm, we pulled up to a dock for lunch at Black Point Island. A slew of stingrays, nurse sharks and needlefish were swimming underneath. We set out on foot for a few blocks to Deshamon's Restaurant, a colorful wooden cottage where a Bahamian buffet was set out.

We happily filled paper plates with fried grouper, barbecue ribs, yellow rice with diced veggies, and fresh fruit and red velvet cake. For $24, the homemade buffet lunch was a decent deal for the Bahamas, where prices tend to be quite high.

Visiting the rock iguanas

Once we were back in the boat, Jedi pointed out Musha Cay, the luxurious private island owned by magician David Copperfield and frequented by celebs like Johnny Depp and Oprah Winfrey. ( Copperfield's isle rents for a reported $57,000 per night .) Shortly after, we slowed down in front of the island owned by country singers Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.

Our last stop of the tour was Bitter Guana Cay, where rock iguanas lounged like miniature dinosaurs on the beach's rocky shoreline. It felt like a shrunken, toy-sized version of "Jurassic Park." As we slipped off the boat into the lukewarm waters, Jedi handed us lettuce and, once again, we fell into what had clearly become a routine: Offer food, snap pictures, vacillate between delight and fear, take more pictures and leave.

SAMSUNG CSC

When the boat returned to the dock at the end of the day, the waters had begun to take on a golden sunset glow. The breeze was calm, the mercury hovered around 85 degrees and we were surrounded by some of the world's most compelling natural beauty.

It's a shame the animals we encountered on this tour aren't better guarded from tourists who behave badly. Because in many ways, it offers a compelling introduction to the creatures inhabiting the Exumas' many cays — and there's no better way to explore the region than by boat, whether or not you decide to splash around with the swimming swine. But ultimately, this is a widely popular tourist attraction that many travelers will book during a trip to the Bahamas.

If swimming with pigs and nurse sharks — and sunbathing with rock iguanas — has been on your travel bucket list since you got your first passport, just remember to be a responsible, thoughtful traveler. Be conscientious about what the animals can and cannot eat (the ministry, for example, recommends only fruits and vegetables including carrots, lettuce, watermelon and apples for the pigs) and be kind to the animals that call the Bahamas home.

Tour operator : Coastline Adventures , but several other companies run nearly identical tours. Some tour operators do offer half-day tours, but be sure to ask if they visit Big Major Cay — there are, in fact, other "pig beaches" that have popped up in the Exumas, and you will rarely reach the original on a short excursion.

Cost : $210 per person, including transfers to and from the airport or your hotel, snorkel equipment, unlimited Bahama Mamas, soft drinks and conch salad. Other, less expensive tour operators require you to make your own way to the boat launch.

When to go: Tours run all year. If swimming with the pigs is the highlight of your visit, ask for one that goes to Big Major Cay in the morning, when they're more active.

Prep tips : Pack plenty of sunscreen and a towel, and bring cash for the shark encounter, lunch and tips. About $50 should easily cover you for the day. According to the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, these tours are best suited for travelers 12 and up.

Things to know before visiting Pig Beach in the Bahamas

Where exactly in the bahamas is pig beach.

Pig Beach is located in a part of the Bahamian Islands known as The Exumas . The Exumas are an archipelago of 365 cays and islands which begin about 80 miles (130 kilometers) southeast of Nassau. The majority of visitors tends to stay in Nassau, but there are various resorts, hotels and vacation rentals scattered across the Exumas.

The island the pigs live on is called Big Major Cay. Apart from the pigs, the island is uninhabited. The closest inhabited island to Big Mayor Cay is Staniel Cay – a tiny island with a population of around 110 people, but luckily it has an airport. If you want to visit the swimming pigs, you have two options: you can base yourself on Staniel Cay (from where you can get to the pigs in only ten minutes!), or you can take a day trip from Nassau. No matter if you’re visiting from Nassau or from Staniel Cay or another island in the Exumas, the only way to get to Pig Beach is by boat.

The best time to visit Pig Beach

You can visit Pig Beach year-round, but take into consideration that there are more visitors during high season, and that the weather may not be perfect during hurricane season.

Off-season is between September and mid-November – that’s when you can expect to share the piggies with only few other visitors.

Peak season is in December and January – that’s when Pig Beach can get pretty busy (especially during the Christmas Holidays). High season lasts all the way through April.

However: You will have a great time with the pigs no matter what time of the day you’re visiting!

What’s the closest island to Pig Beach in the Bahamas?

Staniel Cay is only a short boat ride from Pig Beach – you can get to Big Mayor Cay in less than ten minutes from Staniel Cay! But even if you’re not staying on Staniel Cay, there are ways to visit the swimming pigs:

How to get to Pig Beach

You have different options to visit Pig Beach in the Bahamas, but unless you travel in your own boat, they are all part of a guided tour:

  • Visit Pig Beach from Staniel Cay (a small island near Big Mayor Cay, the island on which the pigs live) – 10 minutes away by boat
  • Visit Pig Beach from Great Exuma – 2 hours away by boat
  • Visit Pig Beach from Nassau – a 35-min flight to Staniel Cay, or 3-hr speedboat ride
  • Visit Pig Beach on a day trip from Florida (a 1-hr flight to Andros Island, followed by a 45-min flight to Staniel Cay)

All options are usually full-day trips that include other stops in addition to the swimming pigs. You can read a detailed rundown of my Pig Beach Tour here . You can also opt for a private tour vs. a group tour, if you’re willing to pay a premium fee for some private time with the pigs. If you’re visiting Pig Beach from Nassau, you can choose between speedboat and airplane to Staniel Cay.

  • From Nassau by plane
  • From Nassau by speedboat

See below for how much each option costs:

How much does it cost to visit Pig Beach

Note that prices are apprx. – just to give you a rough idea about how much you can expect to spend on your trip to Pig Beach.

  • Pig Beach from Nassau by speedboat: $260 per person
  • Pig Beach from Nassau by plane : $675 per person
  • Pig Beach from Staniel Cay : $300 per person
  • Pig Beach from Staniel Cay private tour: starting at $999 for the smallest boat (up to 4 people)
  • Pig Beach from Florida: There are three companies offering day trips to Pig Beach from Fort Lauderdale’s Executive Airport: Bahama Air Tours and Makers Air . Prices range from around US$849 to US$900 –  depending on time of year and availability. It’s worth checking all companies for special offers.

Children under 2 usually don’t pay anything.

Prices vary slightly, depending on what tour company you book your tour with.

What to expect when visiting Pig Beach

  • Don’t expect to spend all day with the pigs. If you’re on a boat tour from Nassau, you’ll spend only about 15 minutes at Pig Beach. If you’re on a boat tour from Staniel Cay, you get to spend a little bit more time with the pigs, but if you want more than half an hour with the piggies, you’ll have to fork out the money for a private tour. (If you think half an hour with the pigs doesn’t sound like much time: there’s not much else to do on Pig Beach, other than snap a few photos of the pigs, swim with them, and coo over the piglets). The tours all include a number of other stops in addition to Pig Beach – for example swimming with nurse sharks, a sandbar, and a sea cave (stops may vary depending on tour operator and weather conditions).
  • Don’t expect there to be pigs in the water . They do swim, but not always. When I visited Pig Beach in the afternoon, almost all of the pigs were asleep on the beach.
  • Expect to share your experience with other tourists – most days, several boats stop at Pig Beach at the same time. If you want the pigs all to yourself, you’ll have to pay for a private tour.
  • Expect to be in or on the water pretty much all day . If you can’t swim, don’t worry – there are usually life vests on board which you can wear to feel safe in the water. You’ll have to wade through shallow water to get to Pig Beach, the Iguana Beach, and the sandbar, and you will have to swim into Thunderbolt Grotto. If you don’t feel comfortable swimming, you can stay on board during the beach visits / snorkeling excursions.

Pig Beach Visit

Is it unethical to visit Pig Beach?

There have been some incidents in the past that made people wonder if the pigs were treated well and if it was unethical to visit Pig Beach.

The pigs are actually well looked after – by a committee of caretakers. These caretakers maintain the enclosures of the pigs, refill their drinking water, feed them, and deal with any potential issues. A nursery was even built for the piglets, so that they’re protected from rain and wind. There’s also a vet who checks in on the pigs regularly. The pigs are all tagged and registered.

Do’s and Don’ts when visiting Pig Beach

Unfortunately, not all visitors use common sense when visiting Pig Beach, and there have been incidents in the past during which both the pigs and visitors got hurt. I wish that tour operators would make an announcement on “pig beach etiquette” and state some guidelines before descending on the island, especially with larger groups.

  • Be respectful when interacting with the pigs. They don’t like being picked up, and don’t force them into discomfort just because you want to get a cute photo. Even worse: trying to ride a pig.
  • Let the pigs come to you, and don’t chase them down the beach. Remember that these are living creatures and not photo props.
  • If you feed the pigs, don’t feed them processed foods . They’re allowed to eat vegetables, fruits (apples and watermelon) and bread. When feeding the pigs you’ll also have to be careful – they might go for your whole hand! It’s safer to put down the food for them. If you have food on you, they may try to get to it, so be careful what you take with you when you get off the boat.
  • Don’t leave any trash behind when leaving Pig Beach.

Piggies in Big Mayor Cay

What to bring to Pig Beach

Most of these items are obvious, but here’s what I recommend you bring to Pig Beach:

  • Bathing Suit / Bikini
  • Beach Towel / Sarong (it was great being able to cover up when we weren’t in the water – but a beach dress would also work)
  • Camera or phone (fully charged, or with a portable charger )
  • Waterproof case or pouch for your smartphone: While it’s possible to get off the boat and walk through the shallow water to Pig Beach, it’s not possible to get your phone inside Thunderball Grotto without getting it wet. While most iPhones are water resistant these days, remember that it’s still not advisable to get salt water inside the charging port, since salt is highly corrosive and will damage your phone.
  • GoPro / underwater camera if you want to take underwater photos
  • Sunscreen & sunhat (especially if you’re taking a long boat ride from Nassau – the sun is relentless and shade on the boats is very limited)
  • Goggles if you want to snorkel with the pigs & sharks / take underwater photos or videos. Your tour operator will most likely provide them, but double check when booking the tour.
  • Insect repellent (the mosquitos are quite aggressive!) – Amazon has several travel-sized bottles
  • Water and snacks (most of the boat operators have water and snacks on the boat, but if you drink more water than average and you consider yourself a big snacker, I’d recommend packing extra of both)
  • A sweater or a light jacket – it can get breezy on the boat, especially if you’re on a speed boat. We also got caught in a rainstorm, and I wished I had a long-sleeve shirt or a light rain jacket while it was raining.
  • Cash or credit card if you want to buy something on one of the inhabited islands you stop at, and to tip your guide. Our tour included lunch on Staniel Cay, but alcohol wasn’t included. There are no ATM’s on any of the islands you’ll stop at, but credit cards are accepted in some places.

Other things to consider when booking a tour to Pig Beach

Bring everything to be comfortable on an all-day excursion

Remember that these are all-day tours and you’ll be on the boat most of the day. Make sure you have everything you need to be comfortable. Some people may want to listen to an audiobook / podcast on the flight / boat ride to Big Mayor Cay, in that case, add headphones to your list.

Make sure to check the weather before booking a tour to the Bahama’s Pig Beach – tours can get cancelled if the weather is bad, especially the boat tours from Nassau which include several hours in the speedboat (and even if the tour doesn’t get canceled: spending hours in the rain on a boat isn’t all that great). Book your tour for a sunny day to avoid cancellations and disappointment.

The Bahamas are always worth a trip – rain or shine!

My son went on this excursion April 9 off of a carnival cruise. His finger was cut by one of the pigs teeth. Are these pigs registered and given shots? I guess the concern is rabies. Can you give me any insight?

Monday 6th of May 2024

Hi Cindy, Carnival Cruise does NOT visit the original Pig Beach. They visit one of the copy cat "pig beaches" that have popped up around Nassau just as a money maker. The original Pig Beach in Big Mayor Cay has a dedicated caretaker for the pigs. I am not aware of what the situation is like on other beaches.

Can you bring ur pet(dog) to pig island?

I don't think so

Thursday 1st of June 2023

What an excellent, thorough post on visiting the pigs with sensible advice (& on how it seems most day trips to island destinations work). This is the first I’ve heard of Pig Beach & it sounds like a fantastic place to visit. It’s also the first time I’ve encountered your site. When I finally get to go on holidays somewhere, I’ll definitely check to see if you’ve been there & have good tips. Thank you 😊

Hi Dani~ You mentioned being able to rent a boat on our own to get to Pig Island. 🙂 Do you happen to know about how much it costs for the day and if you can stay on Pig Island the whole day? I’m assuming it’s still a 3 hour trip. I’m not really interested in going on a tour to hang with other sea animals. Just looking to regroup with a bunch of swimming pigs while relaxing in a floating beach chair (probably a no go, but one can dream).

Great and straight forward advice and observations so thank you.

We are headed to Sandals Emerald Bay and they have the excursion through resort. Obviously convenient, but heard great things about Exumas watersports. Do you have any recommendations of who you would go with for a 1/2 day trip out of Georgetown?

Friday 5th of May 2023

Hi Dene, unfortunately I am not familiar with any of the tour operators in Georgetown because I didn't go there, I only went to the Exumas :-/

Swim with Bahamian Pigs: A once-in-a-Lifetime Experience

bahamas trip to swim with pigs

Welcome to the stunning turquoise waters of the Exuma Cays in the Bahamas, home to one of the world’s most unique and enchanting attractions Bahamian Pigs at the Pig Beach, also known as Big Major Cay. Located among the picturesque islands of the Exumas, Pig Beach is a paradise where visitors can swim, snorkel, and interact with a colony of friendly and playful Bahamian pigs.

Situated within the Exuma Cays , Pig Beach is a remote island oasis accessible only by boat or plane. Situated about 82 miles southeast of Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, this secluded tropical island is a popular stop for travelers exploring the pristine waters of the Exumas. Legend has it that the pigs were originally brought to Big Major Cay by sailors who intended to return and cook them. However, the sailors never came back, leaving the pigs to fend for themselves on the uninhabited island

With Bahamas Air Tours , you can now fly from Nassau or Florida to Pig Beach on an Exuma Day Trip. With daily departures by plane, it’s just a short flight into Staniel Cay Exuma, from where travelers will be transferred to the Bahamian Pigs at Pig Beach by boat.

The Swimming with Bahamian Pigs Experience

The highlight of any visit to Pig Beach is the opportunity to swim with the island’s famous residents: the Bahamian pigs. These charming and sociable creatures have become local celebrities, known for their friendly demeanor and love of swimming in the crystal-clear waters.

As you approach Pig Beach by boat, you’ll be greeted by the sight of pigs frolicking along the shoreline, eager to greet visitors and enjoy some attention. Whether you’re feeding them treats, posing for photos, or simply watching them paddle in the shallows, the experience is nothing short of magical.

The Origin Stories of the Bahamian Pigs

The origin stories surrounding the Bahamian Pigs at Big Major Cay in the Exumas are as intriguing as they are varied. While the exact truth has a more down to earth reason, three popular legends have emerged to explain how these charming creatures came to inhabit the island:

  • Shipwrecked Sailors: According to this legend, sailors passing through the Exumas centuries ago were shipwrecked near Big Major Cay. In a stroke of luck, they were able to swim ashore, bringing with them a cargo of pigs intended for consumption. When the sailors were rescued, they left the pigs behind, hoping to return for them later. However, the sailors never returned, leaving the pigs to fend for themselves and ultimately adapt to their new aquatic lifestyle.
  • Smuggler’s Escape: Another tale suggests that Big Major Cay was once used by smugglers to hide contraband goods. It’s said that the pigs were brought to the island by these smugglers as a food source. When authorities approached, the smugglers fled, leaving the pigs behind. Over time, the pigs learned to survive on their own, eventually becoming the beloved residents of Pig Beach.
  • Tourist Attraction Story: In a more modern twist, some believe that the swimming pigs were intentionally introduced to Big Major Cay by locals looking to create a unique tourist attraction. Recognizing the appeal of the Bahamas’ natural beauty and wildlife, they released a group of pigs onto the uninhabited island. As word of the swimming pigs spread, tourists flocked to Pig Beach, turning it into the iconic destination it is today.

However the truth of the Bahamian Pigs origin is that local farmers on nearby Staniel Cay kept the pigs on Big Major Cay. After a few years the pigs associated the Farmer’s arrival by boat with food. And not long after these Bahamian pigs began swimming out to greet the farmer’s boat in need of feeding.

Looking after the Bahamas Swimming Pigs

Today, the pigs are cared for by local residents and visitors alike, who ensure that they have plenty of food, water, and shelter. The pigs have become beloved ambassadors for the Exumas, attracting visitors from around the world eager to experience the joy of swimming with these friendly animals.

While the pigs of Pig Beach may seem like carefree beach bums, they are actually well cared for by a team of dedicated locals and volunteers. Regular feeding ensures that the pigs remain healthy and happy, while periodic veterinary check-ups help to monitor their well-being.

Visitors are encouraged to interact with the pigs responsibly, following guidelines to ensure the safety and comfort of both the animals and themselves. Feeding the pigs is allowed, but it’s important to use only approved foods and to avoid overfeeding or disturbing the animals.

Bahamas Exuma Pigs Swimming Together

Swimming Pig Beach in the Bahamas

How The Mysterious Swimming Pigs Scored Their Own Private Island

W hen you first step ashore the sugar sand beaches of the Bahamas , it's clear that the area isn't exactly the most natural place for a pig. Rather than snorting around Old McDonald's farm, Bahamian pigs wade through the aquarium-clear waters along the white sand island chain of the Exuma islands. The pigs themselves range in color from powder pink to jet black. Their flat button noses act as a snorkel as they swim and search for morsels of food brought by intrepid travelers.

The original Swimming Pig Beach in the Bahamas is found on the island of Big Major Cay, affectionately called "Pig" Major Cay by some. The island is uninhabited by humans and governed solely by its pig residents. While it's not precisely clear how or when the pigs first took up residence on this island paradise, locals have settled on a few theories.

Bahamas Exuma Island Beach Shore

One involves a group of sailors who charted their way through the Caribbean and dropped off a handful of pigs on the island. Their goal was to have a steady source of pork upon their return. However, the sailors never came back — supposedly, they fell victim to a pirate attack. Meanwhile, the pigs thrived as scavengers.

Another tale relates the story of a ship carrying pigs which ran aground on a sandbank or reef near Big Major Cay. The quick-thinking swine swam towards land and found a new home on the Bahamian island. To stay alive, they feasted on rubbish and scraps that washed ashore.

Exuma Bahamas Pig Swimming Underwater

The most practical explanation, however, is that locals dropped the pigs off on the island in an attempt to form a makeshift farm, made possible through the island's freshwater source. The locals then returned to collect the pigs for food. A man named Wayde Nixon told the "Today" show that he and his business partner placed some pigs on the island during the late 1990s. Since then, others have followed in his footsteps by starting pig colonies on other islands throughout the Caribbean.

Though the pigs on Big Major Cay have resided there for decades, they didn't steal the limelight from Miss Piggy in mainstream media until recently. Now, though, the pigs have gained celebrity status to the point where they've made a cameo appearance on "The Bachelor," have graced the social media feeds of some of Hollywood's biggest stars and even have their own Instagram account, with over 330,000 followers. Once travelers caught wind of the swimming pigs, Bahamian boat owners began organizing tours.

Today, there are a number of islands within the Bahamas that host communities of resident pigs. To see them for yourself, you can charter a boat or join a shore excursion from Nassau, Bahamas .

What Is Swimming With Pigs In The Caribbean Really Like?

Shark Feeding and Diving in the Bahamas

While you can't expect swimming pigs to have the svelte style of an Olympic swimmer, they are talented piggy-paddlers. Many of the swimming pigs are food-motivated, wading into the water for a cool-down or for a treat in the form of a fruit or vegetable.

Bobby Laurie, travel host of "The Jet Set," says that his experience swimming with pigs off Treasure Cay was unlike any other he's ever had.

He and fellow travelers were given apple slices on a stick to feed to the pigs from a safe distance. When the pigs smelled the apples, they'd run over in excitement, their curly tails wagging and their hooves kicking up a flurry of sand.

Bobby says, "The pigs were friendly. They were so excited for the apples that they made their way as fast as they could from person to person."

Once their burst of energy dwindled, the pigs plopped down for a seaside snooze, sitting next to anyone who was on the beach. Bobby says, "If you're not getting into the water, you can sit on the beach and the pigs will come over to you, sleep next to you, and you can enjoy the same up-close experience."

Since each pig has its own personality, much like a dog or cat, you might find that some are eager to go for a dip while others prefer to take a break on the beach.

Bahamas Pigs Sleeping and Napping on the Beach

While venturing around the Caribbean, Lisa Conant, her husband and their 15-year-old son and 12-year-old-daughter stopped at Big Major Cay in the Bahamas to see the swimming pigs for themselves.

Lisa says, "It was equal parts exhilarating and terrifying! Apparently, pigs are excellent swimmers. The pigs get very excited to get treats and will rush over to you, which can be disconcerting, considering their size and teeth. I grew up raising pigs on our farm, so I knew they would be friendly and fairly passive, but seeing them run towards us all at once was a bit nerve-wracking for us and the kids."

Fortunately, the pigs typically know when to take a hint, Lisa explains.

"When you run out of snacks or if you get nervous, just raise your hands near your face to show the pigs that you don't have any food. The pigs are well-trained to recognize this signal and will immediately leave you alone."

Like Bobby, Lisa found that once the pigs' energy levels dwindle, they're laid-back. Lisa remembers, "The pigs let you walk up to them on the beach and you can see the sleeping piglets, which are so adorable. They're extremely entertaining to watch!"

Bahama Exuma Pig Swimming with Seagull

Briana Beaty, a blogger at The Palm Beach Moms, has visited the swimming pigs with her children multiple times over the years. She says, "Swimming with the pigs is really unique. They are very hungry (but picky) and friendly. The kids really enjoyed it. We went one year and saw little pink babies. On our next visit, the piglets were fully grown."

Like many visitors to the swimming pig beach, Briana didn't realize that the pigs had special aquatic skills. "When our boat pulled up to the island, the pigs came swimming out to greet us," she says. "I had no idea that pigs could swim!"

Tips For First-Timers

Before you venture out into the water with the iconic Caribbean pigs, make sure you're prepared. Bring sunscreen, a bathing suit, a hat, a waterproof camera and a bottle of water. If you have any items that shouldn't get wet or dirty, it's best to tuck them safely into a dry bag or leave them behind.

Bobby also advises travelers not to leave their water shoes behind, since you'll need protection if you accidentally get stepped on. "The pigs are very heavy," he cautions.

At the swimming pig beach, tour guides will typically teach guests how to safely feed and interact with the pigs. If you're bringing your own food, the pigs squeal in delight if they're offered fresh produce like apples, bananas, carrots and swine feed. Clean drinking water is also a great item to bring along if you're venturing to an island where the pigs may lack a fresh water source. Ensure that the morsels aren't covered in sand before you feed them to the pigs, as ingesting too much sand can be harmful to their health. Some swimming pig beaches advise visitors to place the food on the end of a stick, leaving a safe distance between your hand and the pig's mouth. If you don't want pigs to get too close, avoid carrying any food. They'll likely leave you alone and wander elsewhere in search of a more stocked traveler.

Exuma Pig Swimming and Eating a Carrot

Because there are more swimming pig beaches than the original beach of Big Major Cay, it can be a challenge to know which pig-ruled island is worth venturing out to. As a rule, islands where the pigs' and tourists' well-being are kept in mind will have shade, fresh water and food for the pigs. The best islands have guides who can help clean up after the pigs and can gently guide any rambunctious pigs away from guests who prefer to be left alone.

Keep in mind that despite their cute demeanor, the pigs can be unpredictable at times. You'll want to give them plenty of space to roam around and avoid interacting with the ones who seem overeager to get a treat.

Ready To See The Swimming Pigs Of The Caribbean?

Swimming with pigs in the Bahamas is sure to be an unforgettable experience. In addition to the swimming pigs, you'll experience endless sweeping isles, rock-roaming iguanas, hospitable locals and a thriving underwater world that's home to rays, reef sharks, sea turtles and more. Whether you want to spend all day with the water-wading pigs or see them for just an hour or two on a half-day excursion, you're bound to have a memorable time in the Caribbean.

Cheapest Way To Swim With Pigs In The Bahamas

Cheapest way to swim with pigs in the Bahamas - featured image

Swimming with pigs in the Bahamas is at the top of many people’s bucket list however it’s known to be a very expensive excursion costing $500 per person on average.

When I visited the Bahamas recently, I wasn’t prepared to spend that much so I began researching cheaper options. In this guide, I’d love to share my findings with you!

You can easily more than halve the cost by joining this swimming with pigs tour (it’s a lot cheaper as they take you to a closer beach).

You’ll save more than $250 per person and still get the exact same experience. It’s a win-win.

Don’t worry, in the rest of this post I’ll go into more detail on the different pig beaches in the Bahamas, why some beaches are cheaper and how you can save the most money .

Table of Contents

Cheapest Way to Swim with Pigs in the Bahamas

The Bahamas is the only place in the whole world where you can swim with pigs which is why so many people really want to do it when they come here.

I was exactly the same! When I started planning my Bahamas trip, swimming with pigs was right at the top of my list.

Specifically most people go to Big Major Cay which is one of the Exuma islands. The island is referred to as ‘Pig Island’ locally.

There you will find the famous Pig Beach which is filled with cute pigs swimming around in the crystal clear waters and playing on the golden sand.

If you’re staying in Nassau then it will be super expensive to get to Pig Beach as you’ll either have to take a flight to Exuma or take a long boat ride.

If you’re on a budget then the cheapest way to swim with pigs in the Bahamas is to join a tour to Rose Island rather than Pig Beach in Exuma. This is what I did and I loved it!

Rose Island, which also has a population of swimming pigs, sits just off the coast of New Providence island and is super easy to get to from Nassau.

Check out the difference in distance between them on the map below:

Map showing location of Rose Island and Pig Beach in Exuma in relation to Nassau.

As it only takes 15 minutes to get there by boat, this tour is significantly cheaper than tours which go to Exuma.

You’ll save between $250 – $300 per person by booking the tour to Rose Island instead of an Exuma tour and realistically, you won’t even be able to tell the difference.

There’s absolutely no drop in quality (the tour has over 300 5-star reviews). The cheaper price is simply because there’s less travel involved.

My Experience Swimming With Pigs on Rose Island

Swimming with Pigs on Rose Island

To save money on my Bahamas trip, I ended up booking the swim with pigs tour to Rose Island.

I have a friend that did the Exuma swim with pigs experience a few years ago and she said it was super busy and actually difficult to even see the pigs!

I had the complete opposite experience on Rose Island! We were able to get so close to the pigs and even feed them vegetables.

After arriving on the island, I was already mesmerizing by the crystal-clear turquoise water and soft white sand but then, out of nowhere, these adorable little piggies start swimming towards me!

They were so friendly and playful, splashing around like they were having the time of their lives. I couldn’t believe my eyes! I jumped right in and started swimming with them and fed them some lunch.

I really felt like one of those pinch me moments!

The video below shows exactly what you can expect from the pigs at Rose Island:

Not many people know that you can actually see pigs in several locations across the Bahamas, not just in Exuma. This is the best way to save money on your tour.

  • Rose Island Swimming With Pigs Tour (cheapest option)

Exuma vs Rose Island

There’s not much difference at all between Exuma and Rose Island if you’re visiting to swim with pigs. Both have a population of pigs that live on the beach and swim in the ocean.

Both are really beautiful locations with soft white sand and crystal clear waters. They both look like they should be on the front of a postcard.

Here’s a quick comparison:

Difference between Exuma vs Rose Island.

Money Saving Tips

There are 3 easy ways that you can cut costs when booking your swim with pigs tour in the Bahamas:

  • Book online – rates online tend to be cheaper than in person (I’ve included links to cheap tours later in the post).
  • Avoid tours which include a flight – traveling by boat is ALWAYS cheaper than by plane.
  • Don’t take a tour to Pig Island in Exuma – there are other beaches in the Bahamas with pigs where tours tend to be at least half the cost.

I’ve done all the hard work for you and found both the best and cheapest ways to swim with pigs in the Bahamas…

Cheapest Way to Visit Pig Beach In Exuma

If you really have your heart set on visiting the famous Pig Beach in Exuma then this is the cheapest tour available:

  • Cheapest Exuma Pig Beach Tour

It’s over $200 more expensive than the Rose Island tour but if you really wanna visit Exuma then this is the lowest price you’ll find.

This tour includes swimming with the famous Bahamian pigs but you’ll also get the chance to swim around with iguanas and reef sharks too.

The tours to Pig Beach in Exuma are more expensive because they include transport from Nassau to Exuma which is much further away than Rose Island.

The cheaper options always take you to Exuma by powerboat rather than a plane.

Whilst flying to Exuma is really convenient, it’ll add an extra few hundred dollars per person onto the price.

Check out the pigs of Exuma in the video below:

💡 Tip: Bring a waterproof camera like the GoPro Hero 10 to get some memorable photos and videos of you with the pigs.

How Long is the Boat Ride from Nassau to Pig Island?

One major downside to visiting Pig Island in Exuma from Nassau is that the boat trip takes at least an hour each way.

If you choose to take the tour to Rose Island to swim with pigs then it won’t take as long to get there so you’ll get more time with the pigs and less time traveling.

If you enjoy seeing pigs, you may also be interested to know where to see flamingos in the Bahamas .

How Much Does it Cost to Swim with Pigs in the Bahamas?

Average cost to swim with pigs in the Bahamas.

It generally costs between $450 and $570 per person to swim with pigs in the Bahamas. These prices are for the tours to the official Pig Beach in the Exumas.

If you choose to go to Rose Island instead then you can halve the cost. Tours to Rose Island tend to cost between $200 and $250 per person.

I’ve summarized all the best options above.

How Did The Pigs Get There?

It’s unclear exactly how the pigs came to live on the beaches of the Bahamas as they were originally domestic.

The most likely theory is that they were dropped off by sailors who planned to come back to eat them.

Another theory is that they were the survivors of a shipwreck.

Of course, it’s also plausible that the pigs were put there on purpose as a tourist attraction but nobody really knows.

Can You Pet The Pigs?

The pigs that you’ll find in the Bahamas are wild pigs – they’re not pets and they’re not domesticated.

That being said, the pigs are super friendly and are happy for you to swim right up to them, feed them and even give them a gentle stroke.

Of course, you need to ensure you’re treating the pigs with respect and you definitely shouldn’t try to ride them or pet them too hard.

Can You Feed The Pigs?

Feeding of the pigs is allowed but you should definitely think about what you are going to feed them.

If you don’t feed them the right kinds of foods then you could actually be harming them.

If you join one of the tours then the guides will usually bring along some pig-safe food for you anyway.

The Bahamas government has asked that tourists only feed the pigs pitted fruit and vegetables .

They also say you should only feed the pigs in the water (and not on the beach). This is because there is less chance of them ingesting sand by mistake if they’re in the water.

In the past, the pigs have been harmed by ingesting too much sand when they were being fed on the beach.

Recommended foods to feed the pigs:

Can you swim with pigs in Bora Bora too?

Here’s a quick video on this topic too…

And that’s it!

Thanks for reading this post on the cheapest way to swim with pigs in the Bahamas.

Swimming with pigs in the Bahamas is on most people’s bucket list and if you’re traveling to the Bahamas then it’s something you just have to do!

If you’re traveling to the Bahamas on a budget then you can still have this amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience without breaking the bank.
